College Night 2012

Recommended for all sophomores, juniors and their parents. Thursday, November 8, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the Main Hall. Joan Shaw, our college counselor will explain how our college counseling program is

with the year’s first pep rally. As the final day of Spirit Week, students may dress in red, white and blue in honor of the upcoming elections. We will invoke our newly created Assembly Schedule, which creates a 60 minute assembly period at the end of the day by taking 15 minutes from each block. The results of the high school’s mock presidential election will be announced at the rally.

Fifth graders are selling car wash tickets to raise money for their Big Island trip. Tickets are $10 & $12 (for cars and SUVS, trucks and vans). The car wash is at Kukui Grove on Sunday, November 4, from 9:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m.

Hawai‘i College & Career Fair

Fourth graders learn about Polynesian voyaging canoes.

MIDDLE SCHOOL – The Middle School Student Council is organizing a dance in the Main Hall on Friday, November 9, from 6:30-9:00 p.m. This social event is open to Island School middle school students and one additional middle school guest per student. Attendance requires each student to bring in a donation of two canned goods and $5 (or $10 with no donated cans). Parent permission forms were sent out last week, and must be signed and returned to homeroom teachers by Monday. For more information, contact Eric Devlin. BIOLOGY – Last week Ms. Mink’s Biology and Honors Biology classes did labs in which they extracted DNA from their own cells, and examined each other’s eyes with magnifying glasses. They observed that many eyes have several different colors in them, the result of several different genes.

SPANISH CLUB – Middle School Spanish Club for is having an excursion to Mariachi’s Mexican Restaurant in Nawiliwili on Friday, Nov. 16 from 4-7 p.m. Transportation to and from Island School is available. Kupu’s Hawai‘i Youth Conservation Corps is now accepting applications for their 2013 summer Gateway Program. Positions include team member, for youth ages 17 to 20, and team leader, for those age 21 and over. The summer Gateway Program is a seven-week program where participants take part in hands-on service learning and conservation work. Participants will gain work experience and knowledge about the environment while working in the some of the most beautiful ecosystems Hawaii has to offer. Positions are available on the islands of O’ahu, Kaua’i, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Hawai’i Island, and Maui. Members and leaders receive an educational award of $1,175 and leaders receive a living allowance of up to $4,000. Participants may also be eligible to apply for college credits.
