Returning Teachers

Welcome back Kerith Edwards and Jamie Metzger! Kerith recently returned to Kaua‘i from California, where she was teaching language arts classes at a performing arts high school.

Kerith’s masters degree is in Comparative Literature. She taught language arts classes at Island School from 2005-09. “It’s wonderful to be back at Island School, as I feel very much at home here.” Kerith is teaching high school English. Jamie has a secondary teaching degree in English, but after a stint in the 3rd grade as a teacher’s aide for Lynda Liesse, she found herself enjoying working with elementary aged students. She left, briefly, on maternity leave and returned last spring to kindergarten to cover Miss Shantelle’s maternity leave. As 5th grade teacher this year, she’s looking forward to continuing to build the relationships started two years ago when she taught these students as 3rd graders.

The Duckies Have Arrived!

The gift wrap fundraiser has begun for grades PK-8. The ducks have arrived on campus and the race is on! If you have not already turned in your completed Reach Out booklet, please do so by Friday of this week. Also, when your child sells

three items, fill in a coupon found on the bottom of the pink parent letter and turn it in before school to earn more ducks and a chance to win prizes in random drawings that will be held throughout the sale at Morning Circle and at MS General Meetings. The 2010-2011 yearbooks will be distributed tomorrow (Friday) by members of the Yearbook Staff in the Purdy Courtyard. A limited number are available for purchase for $100, as well as yearbooks from prior years at discounted prices. Look for a table on the front steps with YB Staff members.

The Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI) has a selection of foreign students eager to spend a year in the United States. They come from countries incuding Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Brazil, Spain and Germany. They have good grades, a beginning knowledge of English and a variety of interests. CCI will cover tuition payment and a lunch stipend.

I.S. Chronicles ART– Last spring Penny Nichols’ middle school class made one of the nine panels that make up the mural at the rebuilt Kamalani Pavilion. A dedication of the pavilion was held last Sunday. Organized by the Garden Island Arts Council, students from each of the nine schools who created murals were asked to say a few words about their experience.

Representing Island School were Savannah Tripoli, grade 8, and her mother Denise, pictured above in front of our panel. Savannah spoke with poise and confidence in front of the assembled crowd.

Also at the event was President Obama’s half-sister, Maya Soetero-Ng, pictured above, who read from her children’s book, Ladder to the Moon. Autographed copies of her book were sold, with the proceeds going to GIAC to purchase materials for additional mural panels.

High school Computer Science covers basic through advanced training, including programming, web design, and learning about hardware. The middle School Tech class is a new elective for students in grades 6-8, and covers similar material as the Eve Parker sounds out the high “F” in “giraffe.” school class.

Students in Video Production, another high school class, finished their first project. Each group chose an inanimate object and filmed “a day in the life” of that object. They edited their clips together to create a 1-minute video. One group chose a pen as their object and pieced short clips of their pen at various places around school. Another group used a ball, which was shown rolling on an adventure through campus.

FIRST GRADE – The class began a unit on inquiry skills. They will learn how to conduct an experiment, to use some of the tools of a scientist, and to make a hypothesis. They are also reading, Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too?, and Frog is Hungry.

ISLAND SCHOOL BAND – At Tuesday’s Morning Meeting the band director, Mickey Gautney, and some of his colleagues did a presentation for all 5-8th graders regarding the new IS Band. Mr. Gautney and his friends visited the middle school music class where students got to try their hand at a wide variety of instruments - flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, saxophone, and a range of percussion instruments.

RECYCLE HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES: The County of Kaua‘i is now offering a year round household battery recycling collection program at the Kaua‘i Resource Center in Lihu‘e. The following battery types are accepted under this program: DryCell (Alkaline), Lithium and NiCad. The Kaua‘i Resource Center in Lihu‘e located at 3460 Ahukini Rd. near the airport and is open M-F 7:45 am to 4:15 pm; closed on all holidays and weekends. The collection drums are located inside the main building.

Car batteries and UPS backup batteries will not be accepted, and can be taken to PS&D Tires/Napa Auto Parts.

Seniors Earn Privileges

Part of growing up is assuming more responsibility for your actions. The granting of Senior Privileges is an opportunity for our graduating class to prepare for the world that awaits them; a world of many choices with greater responsibilities and consequences. Last week, leaders from the Class of 2012 met with faculty representatives to discuss their requests and negotiate their privileges for the school year. The results of this negotiation were presented to the high school faculty as a whole on Monday, 22 August, and approved. We thought you’d be interested in learning what they are.

In addition to the above privileges, each senior has pledged to add 10 hours of community service to the 20 hours required by the school each year of high school. These extra hours will be served to benefit Island School, and the class will plan and execute activities to meet this pledge.
