We’re a passionate bunch! Fiercely determined pioneers made their home here, cutting into the wilderness with independence and hard work. They played with energy and enthusiasm and valued their community. Most early public buildings, schools, halls and churches were raised with volunteer labour and donations. Although governed from Victoria, Islanders seldom looked to the outside for help. In 2012 Salt Spring Island’s elected officials asked the provincial government to support a study to decide if the community was amenable to incorporation. They asserted local government would streamline decision-making. Despite opposition from community members decrying the costs and danger of losing our rural and natural heritage, many others agreed with those who wanted change.

In 2013 sufficient community interest was found to proceed. Thus, in 2015 an incorporation study was launched with provincial funding. The year that followed included public input and reports. The provincial government offered restructure assistance should the community decide to proceed with incorporation and the committee recommended a referendum. The vote is scheduled for September 9, and the final report is available online at: www.ssiincorporationstudy.com/final-report In true Island style locals took their points of view to coffee shops, meetings, social media, print and online publications. Incorporation has become a topic of conversation in any and every venue from board meetings, to grocery store lines. There are thoughtful intelligent people on both sides of the question. Not unlike our local predecessors, strong feelings fuel our debates and discussions. Our Island is well loved but residents hold divergent opinions of how to sustain the best we have... and make it even better.
