Spring is here and our students are busy getting ready for the last months of the school year. Fifth graders in many schools will soon be camping with their classmates and enjoying a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you are concerned or nervous about your child’s participation in this event, please read “Ten Truths About 5th Grade Camp” on page 19. I hope this article will help you feel better about this special activity.

If the idea of your student entering middle school is another concern and you’re trying to figure out class selections, please see the “Entering Middle School” story on page 13. A Bulgarian mom from the school district shares her opinions and experiences about the transition from elementary to middle school.

And if you are stressed out about the high school prom, read our recommendations on page 21 to make this event unforgettable.

Distrito Escolar de Issaquah

Diversidad e inclusión en nuestro Distrito Escolar de Issaquah Por Pat Sadate-Ngatchou

Somos originarios de Camerún, en África Central, inmigramos a los Estados Unidos para asistir a la universidad y hemos vivido en varias partes del país durante muchos años, por lo que nos consideramos afroamericanos.

Una de nuestras dos hijas ha asistido a tres diferentes primarias y ahora está en una de las secundarias del Distrito Escolar de Issaquah. Su trayecto escolar nos ha llevado del Kínder en Endeavor, a 1° y 2° en Grand Ridge, 3° a 5° en Apollo y 6° en PCMS. A medida que nuestra hija progresa, nos hemos familiarizado con el sistema del Distrito Escolar de Issaquah.

En general, nuestra experiencia ha sido excelente.

Académicamente, nuestra hija ha prosperado y estamos felices de que las escuelas tengan diversidad de orígenes entre sus estudiantes (aproximadamente el 45% de la población estudiantil no es caucásica), sin embargo, hay cosas que nos preocupan.

Es notable que la población estudiantil afroamericana sigue siendo extremadamente baja en el distrito, pero es aún más sorprendente la reducida presencia de maestros y personal administrativo no caucásicos, no hablo solo de personas de origen africano, sino también de origen asiático e hispano. Y aunque estas son buenas ocasiones para enseñar a todos nuestros estudiantes sobre la rica herencia afroamericana, creemos que podemos aspirar a más.

¿Por qué no incluir las contribuciones de los afroamericanos en el currículo de inglés, música, estudios sociales y ciencias de manera que los alumnos conozcan una parte integral de la cultura de EE.UU? Enseñarles continuamente las contribuciones de sus ancestros en la construcción de nuestra sociedad sería una gran forma de empoderar a los estudiantes afroamericanos.

We are originally from Cameroon in Central Africa, immigrated to the USA to attend college and have lived in various parts of the country. We have been in the US for all of our adult lives so we consider ourselves African Americans.

One of our two daughters has attended 3 different elementary schools and is now in a middle school in the Issaquah School District. Her journey has taken us from Kindergarten at Endeavor, to 1st and 2nd grade at Grand Ridge, 3rd to 5th grade at Apollo, and now 6th grade at PCMS. As our daughter progresses, we continuously get acquainted with the Issaquah School District system.

Overall our experience has been great. Academically, our daughter has thrived and we are happy that the schools have a fair amount of diversity (about 45% of the student population are not Caucasian).

Nonetheless, there are several things that concern us.

It is noticeable that the African American student population remains extremely low in our school district. Even more striking is the almost inexistent population of staff and faculty of color. Not just staff from African decent but also from Asian and Hispanic backgrounds. It was somewhat disturbing to realize that our daughter might go through the entire grade school and never encounter a single teacher or staff of her own race.

We are also concerned about the book selection our daughter was given in the past 6 years because it has not included many works from acclaimed African American authors, or other authors from Asian or Hispanic backgrounds.

We could certainly expose our kids to contributions from African Americans by celebrating Martin Luther King Day and Black History Month. Although those are a great start to teach to all our kids about the rich African American heritage, both celebrations are punctual and we can aim for more.

Why not purposefully include contributions from African Americans into the curriculum for language art, music, social study, science, thereby seamlessly including this integral part of the USA culture in our students’ knowledge? In addition, continuously showcasing contributions from their ancestry in building our society will be a great way to empower African American students like our own daughter.

Diversity and Inclusion in our Issaquah School District

As parents, we have taken it upon ourselves to be actively engaged at school so our child and other children of color will notice diversity among the adults around them. We are so fortunate that other parents of diverse origins participate as well and bring diversity into the classrooms and elsewhere in school by volunteering. I hope that together we continue to deliberately bridge that gap, so that the 45% of kids from diverse origin at ISD meet that role model at their school corridor.

We know there is a lot of work to do for the diversity and inclusion of our district, but we are fortunate to have the Equity Advisory Group sponsored by the ISD. This group’s efforts to improve diversity and inclusion is commendable and we especially like their goal to support the district in hiring and retaining staff of diverse origin.

We do appreciate the open-mindedness of officials at the ISD as they have always invited us to share and try innovations that benefit our students, sponsoring forums, share our experiences, find long term solutions to our challenges and build a safe space for cultural exchanges.

Distrito Escolar de Issaquah

Grupo Asesor sobre Equidad El Grupo Asesor sobre Equidad se formó en enero del 2015. Es un grupo de padres, maestros, paraprofesionales, administradores y otros miembros de la comunidad del Distrito Escolar de Issaquah.

¿Qué es equidad?

La equidad aborda las diferencias entre las personas y toma en consideración el hecho de que esta sociedad tiene muchos grupos en ella que no siempre han recibido el mismo trato y/o no han tenido un terreno en común para convivir. (Krause, Traini y Mickey, 2001, Equidad versus Igualdad) La equidad significa prestar especial atención a ciertos grupos, para servir mejor a los que no han sido representados o atendidos lo suficiente. Cuando nos enfocamos en estos grupos, el distrito entero se beneficia (esto es “universalismo focalizado”).

La igualdad dice que tratemos a todos de la misma manera y les proporcionemos los mismos recursos o apoyo. Equidad se enfoca en tratar a cada persona individualmente dándoles los recursos y apoyos que necesitan para tener acceso y tener éxito.

El Grupo Asesor sobre Equidad está trabajando actualmente en estas recomendaciones para el año escolar 2017-18: Alianzas familiares

-Desarrollar líderes para padres en las diferentes escuelas que puedan servir como conectores y agentes culturales entre familias.

-Proporcionar capacitación y educación durante todo el año para los padres del sistema escolar.

-Trabajar con el PTA para involucrar a familias de diversas culturas/idiomas.

Contratar y retener personal diverso

-Continuar trabajando con NW University en rutas alternativas a la certificación de paraprofesionales (para apoyar paraprofesionales de color para convertirse en maestros).

-Explorar el flujo de maestros: con el objetivo de que los estudiantes de color de las secundarias del Distrito Escolar de Issaquah se conviertan en maestros del distrito.

The Equity Advisory Group formed in January, 2015. They are a group of parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators and other community members in the ISD.

What is Equity?

Equity addresses differences and takes into consideration the fact that this society has many groups in it who have not always been given equal treatment and/or have not had a level field on which to play. (Krause, Traini & Mickey, 2001, Equity versus Equality.)

Equity means giving special focus to certain groups, to better serve those groups that have been under-represented or under-served.

When we focus on these groups, the whole district benefits (this is “targeted universalism”).

Equality says we treat everyone the same and give them the exact same resources or support. Equity says we treat each person individually and give them the resources and supports they need to get access and succeed.

The Equity Advisory Group is currently working on these recommendations for 2017-18: Family Partnerships

-Develop parent leaders in buildings who can serve as family connectors and cultural brokers with families.

-Provide year-long, district-wide training and education for parents about the school system.

-Work with PTAs to engage families from diverse cultures/languages.

The Equity Advisory Group is open to anyone in our schools or community. Please join them at their next meeting on April 19th at Issaquah Valley Elementary, Portable 5, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Hiring and Retaining Diverse Staf

-Continue working with NW University on alternate routes to certification for EAs (to support EAs of color to become teachers).

-Explore teacher pipeline: ISD high school students of color to become ISD teachers.

-Look at job descriptions and interview questions for other possible ways to attract/hire diverse candidates.

Cultural Competence Professional Development/Training for ISD Staff

-Continue with current professional development for staff – teachers and support staff.

-Continue with current professional development for principals/administrators.

-Consider having mandatory training for all staff.

Los abuelos son buenísimos voluntarios Por Nicole Rich

Todos entendemos el valor que los abuelos agregan a nuestras familias, por lo que es muy importante invitarlos a nuestras comunidades escolares para que enriquezcan la experiencia de los estudiantes en las escuelas. Los voluntarios son importantes en todos los planteles y muchos de ellos necesitan desesperadamente personas que ayuden en los salones, en eventos y con diferentes actividades. El tiempo es a menudo uno de los factores que impide que los padres sean voluntarios, pues muchos trabajan mientras los niños están en la escuela. Sin embargo, dado que la mayoría de los abuelos están jubilados y, en muchos casos, están buscando formas de mantenerse activos y comprometidos con la comunidad, el voluntariado durante el día escolar puede ser una combinación perfecta.

Grand Ridge Elementary tiene la suerte de contar con algunos abuelos que han encontrado su lugar como voluntarios, ya sea en el salón de clases de sus nietos recortando Box Tops, o como mentores del programa VOICE Mentor de Issaquah Schools Foundation.

Alicia Arjona es una abuela que pasa la mitad del año en su país natal, México, y medio año aquí, en Issaquah, con la familia de su hija.

Alicia no habla inglés, pero no ha permitido que esto la detenga para ser voluntaria en la escuela de sus nietos. Ella ofreció a ayudar a los maestros con tareas administrativas que puede hacer fácilmente en su casa o ayudar en la escuela los viernes, cuando se venden palomitas de maíz.

Recientemente, Alicia dio un gran paso fuera de su zona de confort cuando aceptó organizar la recaudación de juguetes de Navidad a beneficio del Banco de Alimentos y Ropa de Issaquah. Alicia trabajó con su nieto, quien la ayudó a escribir en inglés las frases que necesitaba para explicar al personal de la escuela que estaba allí para recoger los juguetes. Este valiente acto de bondad no solo ayudó a Grand Ridge Elementary, también contribuyó a alegrar las fiestas decembrinas de muchas familias de Issaquah.

En enero pasado, Alicia Arjona fue reconocida como Voluntaria del Mes por su dedicación y compromiso con nuestra escuela.

Con su trabajo, nos ha demostrado que todos se benefician cuando los abuelos comparten su tiempo, conocimientos y amor con nuestras comunidades escolares.

Si conoces a un abuelo que podría ser un gran voluntario, anímalo a completar la verificación de antecedentes en línea a través del Distrito Escolar de Issaquah. Elementary Schools

Grandparents Make Grand Volunteers We all understand the value Grandparents add to our families, so it’s important to connect them to our school communities where they can enrich the lives of every student. Volunteers are important in every school yet many of our schools are desperately in need of more volunteers. Time is often one of the factors that prevents parents from being able to volunteer at school. We understand many parents are often working during the school day and therefore not able to spend time in the classroom or at school events. However, since many grandparents are retired and might be looking for ways to stay active and engaged in the community, volunteering during the school day can be the perfect match!

Grand Ridge Elementary is fortunate to have a few grandparents who have found their niche volunteering; they can be found in their grandchild’s classroom, spending time as a VOICE mentor, or clipping Box Tops. Grandparents from other countries also find it rewarding to share their culture with students during Cultural Clubs at recess or the larger Cultural Fair Event.

Language barriers may make some grandparents hesitant to volunteer at school. However, we believe there is always a way to be inclusive and embrace volunteers of all ages and all cultures for the benefit of the grandparent and the school.

Alicia Arjona is a grandparent who spends half of the year in her native country of Mexico and half the year here in Issaquah with her daughter’s family. Alicia does not speak English, but she has not let that deter her from volunteering in her grandchildren’s’ school. She has offered to help teachers with administrative tasks she can easily do at home or help at school during Popcorn Fridays.

Alicia recently took a big step out of her comfort zone when she agreed to organize our school’s holiday toy drive benefiting the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank. Alicia worked with her grandson who helped her write down the messages she wanted to say in English so she could speak to the staff and explain that she was there to collect and deliver the toys. This brave and selfless act of kindness not only helped our school but more importantly it helped to brighten the holidays for so many Issaquah families who were in need.

This past January, Alicia was recognized as Volunteer of the Month for her dedication and commitment to Grand Ridge Elementary. Alicia Arjona helped to show us that everyone benefits when grandparents share their special gifts of time, knowledge and love with our school communities.

If you know a grandparent who would be a grand volunteer, please encourage them to complete the online background check through the Issaquah School District. Then they can reach out to their grandchild’s classroom teacher, the staff in the main office, or the school’s PTSA volunteer coordinator to find the type of volunteer role that would suit them best.

Primaria

Diez verdades sobre los campamentos de 5° Grado Por Alicia Spinner Durante muchos años, temí el día en que a mi hijo le tocara ir al campamento de 5° Grado y al mismo tiempo, creció su emoción por participar en dicho evento, así que cuando llegó el momento de inscribirlo, me fue imposible decirle que no.

Pero sobreviví y me sorprendí de todo lo que aprendí. Aquí te comparto mis experiencias.

1. Los campamentos son una actividad educativa.

Aunque se conocen como una tradición anual para los estudiantes de 5° Grado, casi un regalo de graduación de primaria, los viajes que muchas escuelas organizan cada año en mayo o junio están alineados con los estándares básicos de aprendizaje del estado. Los estudiantes pasan tres días participando en lecciones prácticas que complementan el currículo de ciencias y estudios sociales. Toman clases con profesionales entrenados y aprenden al aire libre.

2. Ayudan a los niños a prepararse para la secundaria.

En los campamentos se organizan programas de desarrollo y liderazgo. Muchas de las actividades se centran en la cooperación grupal, la construcción de relaciones y la resolución de problemas.

Esto ayuda a los estudiantes a ser un poco más independientes, parte de su preparación para pasar de la primaria a la secundaria.

También es muy bueno para ellos interactuar con todos sus compañeros del mismo grado, no solo con los niños de su clase.

3. ¡Sí, los campamentos también son divertidos!

Es el último año de primaria, y ellos han anticipado este evento durante años. Así es que sí hay actividades recreativas, como bailes divertidos, paseos en canoas, manualidades y tiempo para cantar alrededor de la fogata. Pero los maestros y voluntarios no les obligan a hacer actividades que no quieran.

4. Muchos niños nunca han dormido fuera de casa.

Si esto es cierto para tu familia, lo mejor que puedes hacer es comunicárselo a los organizadores y trabajar en un plan para ayudar a tu hijo. Los consejeros del campamento y los padres voluntarios hacen un gran trabajo para ayudar a los niños a sentirse a gusto.

También puedes ir de voluntario, ya que las escuelas siempre están buscando padres para ayudar, ¡y es realmente divertido!

5. Muchas familias no tienen experiencia acampando.

Aunque acampar es una actividad tradicional en el noroeste de los Estados Unidos, muchos de nuestros estudiantes nunca han ido de campamento, por lo que esta actividad puede ser aterradora.

Si este es el caso de tu familia y deseas que la experiencia de tu hijo sea favorable, considera llevar a toda tu familia a acampar antes.

6. ¡Hace demasiado frío y está mojado!

Los niños rara vez se preocupan por el clima como los adultos.

Sin embargo, las actividades sucederán con lluvia o sol, ¡así que asegúrate de empacar apropiadamente! Envía a tu hijo con ropa abrigada e impermeable, pijamas y con una bolsa de dormir que sea adecuada para las temperaturas exteriores. Los organizadores te darán una lista de todo lo necesario con bastante anticipación, así que no te preocupes, tendrás tiempo para reunir todo.

7. Hay animales salvajes alrededor de los campamentos.

Sí, hay algunos animales salvajes, pero las escuelas no enviarán a los niños a lugares que consideren inseguros. Los niños duermen en literas en cabañas con calefacción y con muchos adultos a su alrededor. En algunas escuelas, maestros, enfermeras y otros miembros del personal de 5° Grado asisten al campamento, mientras que, en otras, los viajes son organizados por el PTSA. En ese caso, enfermeras voluntarias vienen con padres voluntarios.

8. Los campamentos no son baratos.

El costo es normalmente de alrededor de $200, pero las escuelas tienen becas para las familias que lo necesitan. Además, PTSAs y grupos de padres de 5° Grado organizan eventos de recaudación de fondos para ayudar con los costos. Pregúntale a tu escuela qué programas de recaudación u oportunidades de becas ofrecen.

9. Debes planear con anticipación.

Asiste a la noche de información para padres del campamento; todas tus preguntas serán respondidas allí. Se te dará un paquete con información y verás una presentación que te dará una idea clara de cómo es el campamento.

10. Y el broche de oro: ¡sin pantallas!

Dado a que los padres se preocupan todo el tiempo por el exceso de las actividades que incluyen tecnología para niños, es maravilloso que las escuelas organicen estos campamentos donde no hay radios, reproductores de CD, juegos electrónicos, teléfonos celulares o cualquier otro dispositivo electrónico.

Respira profundamente y disfruta de esta oportunidad que se les brinda a nuestros niños en la escuela primaria. ¡Que tengan un muy feliz campamento!

By Alicia Spinner For many years, I dreaded the day that my son was going to go to overnight 5th grade camp without a parent. However, his excitement grew with the passing of the years, and when the time came to sign up, I felt that I could not say no. I survived it, and I was surprised by all the things that I learned. Here’s what I discovered:

1. Camps are an educational activity.

Although they are known as an annual tradition for fifth graders, almost as an elementary graduation present, the camps that the schools organize every year in May or June are aligned with the Common Core State Learning Standards. Students spend three days participating in hands-on lessons that compliment their science and social studies curriculum. They take classes from trained professionals and learn about the outdoors.

2. Camps help kids get ready for middle school.

There are strong character development programs woven throughout the experience. Many of the activities focus on group cooperation, relationship building and problem solving. This helps students become a little more independent as part of preparing them to move from elementary to middle school. It’s great to see them interacting with all of their fellow 5th graders, and not only with the kids in their classroom.

3. Yes, camps are fun too!

It’s the last year of students’ elementary education, and they have been anticipating this event for years. So yes, there are some recreational activities included in the camp, such as fun dances, canoeing, crafts and campfire songs. But the teachers and volunteers are super careful and don’t push them to do anything they are not comfortable with.

4. Some families have a no sleepovers rule.

If this is true for your family, the best you can do is to communicate it to the organizers and work on a plan to help your child. Camp counselors and volunteer parents do a great job to help kids feel at ease. You could also chaperone, as schools are always looking for volunteers to help, and it is really fun!

5. Many families are not camping kind of people.

Although camping is a Pacific Northwest activity, many of our students have never gone camping so it might be frightening. If this describes your family, and you want to ease their experience, consider taking your whole family camping sometime before 5th grade camp.

6. It’s too cold and wet outside!

Kids rarely care about the weather as much as adults do. However, activities will happen rain or shine, so be sure to pack appropriately!

Send your student with warm and waterproof clothes, pajamas and also with a sleeping bag that is warm enough for outside temperatures. Organizers will give you a list of necessary items well in advance so don’t worry, you will have time to gather everything.

Ten Truths About 5th Grade Camps

7. There are some wild animals living around the camps.

Yes, there are some wild animals but schools won’t send kids to places that they consider unsafe. Kids will be sleeping in bunk beds in heated cabins or lodges with plenty of adults around. At some schools, 5th grade teachers, nurses and other staff members attend the camp while in others, it is organized by the PTA. In that case, volunteer nurses come along with parent volunteers.

Also, the facilities have their own staff to instruct the classes and supervise the various activities.

8. Camps are not cheap.

The cost of the camp is normally around $200, but schools have scholarships for families who need it. Also, PTSAs and groups of 5th grade parents organize fundraising events to help with the cost of the camp. Ask your school what fundraising or scholarship opportunities they offer.

9. You need to plan ahead.

Attend the Camp Parent Information Night; all your questions will be answered there. You’ll be given a packet with information and view a slide show to give you a clear picture of what the camp looks like.

10. The cherry on the top: no screens!

Since parents worry all the time about too many screen activities for kids, it’s amazing that schools arrange these camps where there are no radios, CD players, electronic games, cell phones, or any other electronic devices!

Secundaria

Ingresando a secundaria Por Adriana Stamenova

Soy la mamá de una alumna de secundaria que asiste a Pacific Cascade Middle School. Soy originaria de Bulgaria, pero he vivido en los Estados Unidos durante 25 años, donde he recibido mis títulos de maestría y postgrado, por lo que pensé que el sistema académico aquí sería muy claro para mí, pero tengo que admitir que me fue muy confuso aprender cómo funciona la secundaria en nuestro distrito.

Aunque PCMS hace un gran trabajo durante la Orientación, después de asistir a este evento me sentí muy confundida, principalmente por la diferencia básica entre la educación aquí y en el resto del mundo. Lo que quiero decir con esto es que todos los estudiantes en 6° Grado no siguen el mismo camino. Y ese camino es elaborado por el estudiante o por los padres. Nunca imaginé que algo así existiera.

En Europa, si estuvieras en 5° Grado y pasaras al 6°, simplemente continuarías con alumnos de tu misma edad y grado en todas las asignaturas y aprenderías el material del siguiente nivel. Este no es el caso aquí. Es posible que estés en 6° Grado sentado al lado de estudiantes de 6°, 7° u 8° grados porque decidiste tomar alguna de las materias avanzadas.

Los estudiantes tendrán la opción de seleccionar una clase regular o avanzada para Ciencias, Artes del Lenguaje, Estudios Sociales y Matemáticas (para Matemáticas habrá tres alternativas). Puede ser confuso, por lo que te sugiero que sigas las indicaciones de la escuela (durante la Orientación) sobre cómo tomar decisiones sabiamente.

Ten en cuenta que tomar una “clase avanzada” puede significar aprender material diferente, que el estudiante aprenderá en forma condensada más adelante (por ejemplo, Ciencia), pero también puede significar omitir conceptos (por ejemplo, Matemáticas) y estudiar material didáctico más rigurosamente y tener muchos más deberes (por ejemplo, Artes del Lenguaje y Estudios Sociales).

A fin de tomar la decisión correcta para tu hijo, revisa sus calificaciones y considera de manera realista su desempeño y habilidades académicas; habla con su maestro de 5° Grado para obtener más información, y también platica con padres que tienen hijos mayores y han pasado por este proceso.

Aunque todavía no soy una experta en la escuela secundaria, ahora me siento segura de saber cómo funciona el 6° Grado. Lo más importante es tomar estas decisiones cuidadosamente, teniendo en cuenta la capacidad de tu hijo. No selecciones una clase avanzada si él o ella no está listo. ¿Por qué pedirles que hagan algo que no es para ellos? Nadie ganará una medalla de oro por tomar una clase avanzada. Habrá muchas oportunidades para aprender y desarrollarse en la escuela secundaria.

Por otro lado, no selecciones las clases regulares si a tu hijo le va muy bien académicamente (especialmente si su hijo estaba anteriormente en un programa como SAGE o MERLIN). Es obvio que, en este caso, los cursos avanzados son los correctos, de lo contrario, tu hijo se aburrirá.

Middle Schools

Entering Middle School I am the parent of a middle schooler, who attends Pacific Cascade Middle School (PCMS). I am originally from Bulgaria but I have lived in the United States for 25 years where I have received both my post-graduate and graduate degrees. I thought the academic system here would be crystal clear but, I have to admit that learning about how middle school works was confusing.

While PCMS does a great job during Orientation, I was still confused after attending, mostly because of how different schooling is here versus the rest of the world. What I mean by that is that everyone in 6th grade does not have the same path. And that path is heavily crafted by the student/parent(s). I had never imagined that anything like that exists.

Growing up in Europe, if you were in 5th grade and going into 6th grade, you just continue with the same age/ grade kids for all subjects and learn “the next level material.” Here, this is not the case. You may be in 6th grade sitting next to a 6th, 7th or 8th grader because you select some of your subjects and that subject has different levels for you to choose from.

Students will be given the option to select a regular or an advanced class for Science, Language Arts/Social Studies, and Math (for Math - there will be three alternatives). It can be confusing but all that I can suggest is that you follow the school’s guidance (during Orientation) on how to make that choice wisely. Be aware that advanced classes can mean learning different material that your student will cover in a condensed form later on (e.g., Science). But it can also mean skipping concepts (e.g., Math) and learning material more rigorously while doing a lot more homework (e.g., Language Arts/Social Studies).

To make the right decision for your child, look at his/her test scores and consider realistically his/her academic performance and ability. Talk to your child’s 5th grade teacher for further input. And finally, talk to other parents who have older kids and have gone through this process.

While I’m still no expert at middle school, I now feel pretty good about how 6th grade works. What you ultimately should know is, make the choice carefully with full consideration of your kid’s ability. Don’t select an advanced class if your child is not ready. Why make them struggle and be miserable? Nobody will earn a gold medal for that. There will be plenty of opportunities for advanced course work in high school.

On the flip side, don’t select the regular classes if your kid is very strong academically (esp. if your child was previously in a Gifted Program like SAGE or MERLIN). It’s a no brainer that in this case, advanced courses are the right ones. Otherwise, your child will be bored. Overall, choosing middle school courses can be hard but if you talk to others, and consider all of the choices, you will make the right decision. Good luck!

Cuando mi hijo tenía solo cinco años, me contó emocionado que acababa de conocer a un nuevo amigo en su teléfono. Yo me aterré, no dije mucho y esperé a que su papá estuviera en casa. Cyber Safety It is important to ask your kids the right questions and to establish an open line of communication so they are comfortable turning to you in times of crisis.

When my son was just five years old, he told me how excited he was about his new friend he had just met on his phone. I was terrified; I did not say much and waited until his dad was home. Then, over dinner I asked him about it, and to my surprise he said that the name of his new online friend was Siri!

Oh, I wish things were that simple now, but the reality is that technology changes faster than we can understand. Especially since most of us have less interest than our kids in using technology, it has become very important to constantly ask our children about it.

But, be smart about when and how you approach them. Mornings are not the best time of the day for many teenagers. The best opportunities are sometimes car rides, hikes, and in some cases, over dinner.

Do you ever argue or post hurtful updates on your Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or any other social media site? Why?

Preparatoria

Cómo tener una buena noche de baile de promoción o Prom Los bailes de las preparatorias han cambiado a través de los años, pero siguen siendo bailes formales que se consideran la más importante ocasión social del año para los estudiantes. Aquí compartiremos algunas recomendaciones contigo, pero realmente el mejor consejo que podemos darte es PREPÁRATE CON TIEMPO. -Incluso si un muchacho le pide a una muchacha que vayan en pareja, los estudiantes normalmente van a este evento con un grupo de amigos. Esta es una gran idea; van a pasarlo bien, pero sin la presión y la expectativa de tener una noche romántica.

-Ellas todavía usan ramilletes en la muñeca y ellos, flores en la solapa del traje. Si van en pareja, usualmente es el varón quien compra las flores. Si van con amigos, cada quien compra su propio arreglo.

-Todos los salones de belleza estarán ocupados ese día, así que si quieres que arreglen a tu hija, haz cita por lo menos con un mes de anticipación. Algunas chicas prefieren reunirse con amigas y se ayudan mutuamente con el maquillaje, las uñas y el peinado.

The high school prom has changed through the years, but it is still a formal dance that is considered the grand social occasion of the year for students. Here we will share some recommendations with you, but really the best advice that we can give you is to PLAN AHEAD.

-Despite the fact that more teens are involved in fatal traffic accidents during prom season, the majority of high school aged students don’t seem to recognize how dangerous this is. This is why you need to plan ahead who will drive them from one place to the other.

-Students normally go to to this event with a group of friends, even if a boy asks a girl to go as a couple. This is a great idea; they go to have a good time, but without the pressure and expectation of a romantic night.

-After-prom parties are typically low-key events and are held in houses. Kids get together and watch a movie, eat snacks and talk about the party. We recommend plan ahead about where they will ejoy this part of their special night. Most of the dangers take place after midnight when they are tired and their guard is down.

It’s great to have a plan for them during these vulnerable hours.

You don’t want to be pacing the floors of your house while they are dancing the night away.

-Girls still wear corsages and boys boutonnieres to go with their outfits. If they are going as a couple, the boy normally buys the flowers.If they are going with a group of friends, they get their own flowers.

-All the hair salons will be busy that day. If you want to make an appointment, do it at least a month in advance. Some girls get together with friends and help each other with make up, nails and hair styling.

-Students like to go out fot dinner before the Prom, and you need to make reservations even for very informal places like Red Robin.

-Many teen girls are not used to wearing high heels, but they do it for these events, so having matching flats is a good idea if possible!

-When it comes to the cost, prom night can put a decent pinch on your wallet. Plan how much your family will be able to spend and try to find ways to economize.

Prom nights are long but if you plan ahead, they can be fun, unforgettable and safe events for your children.

High School dances can be very stressful for some students, since the cost of formal dresses is very high. For most girls, going to prom is all about the dress. This is why the Ruby Room organization helps teenagers in the state of Washington by offering party clothes for school dances. Ruby Room has a selection of formal dresses in all colors and in all sizes. They also have accessories including shoes and jewelry. And, everything is free!

To qualify for this service, teens must: -Be currently enrolled in high school and present a valid school ID. -Be eligible for the free or reduced lunch program, or be referred by a school or community service leader such as a teacher, counselor or social worker.

Un día en la vida de

… Una maestra de ELL (Estudiante del Idioma Inglés) Cultural Bridges (CB): Cuéntanos un poco sobre tu puesto de trabajo y lo que haces a diario.

Mandeep Bains Chowdhary (MBC): Soy muy afortunada de ser maestra de ELL para Grand Ridge Elementary y Maple Hills Elementary. El privilegio de trabajar con personal de apoyo, con la Asociación de Padres y Maestros (PTA) que siempre está apoyándonos y un increíble grupo de estudiantes hacen que venir a trabajar sea un gran placer. My day-to-day activities consist of getting to know the students, collaborating with teachers to understand and support the needs of our students, communicating with parents, and continually enhancing my English Language Development (ELD) instruction.

CB: Can you tell us more about the Issaquah School District’s English Language Development program?

MBC: Our objective is to reduce the students’ affective filter, so they can focus on accessing grade level learning.

I focus on building academic language and increasing vocabulary development, while meeting our students where they are on their learning journey. In the case that some of our students are new to the country, I offer support in learning about the American culture and customs.

CB: What advice would you give to a parent who has a child in the ELL program?

MBC: Every Child has their own pace of learning. Parents can help by encouraging the use of their native language and by being patient in understanding that language development is a process that takes time. The stronger their academic skills are in the primary language, the greater the chances of those skills transferring to the second language. Self-confidence increases as comprehension skills and background knowledge become strong in the primary language allowing the natural building of their schema.

CB: Tell us a little bit about yourself outside your work.

MBC: My family arrived like most immigrants seeking more opportunity and education for their children. I come from a determined, loving mom and encouraging father. Born in India, raised in California since the age of six, I learned, first hand, the importance of helping our students to be proud of their heritage and their native language, as they become active members of their community.

Like my students, I know that there is still more I want to learn. Beyond being a life-long learner, I am an avid runner who enjoys reading and hiking.

Localice señales de comportamiento de riesgo 16 de abril, 6:30 p.m. ¿Crees que verías los signos de que tu hijo o hija está consumiendo alcohol o drogas? Las apariencias pueden ser muy engañosas, especialmente si no sabes qué buscar.

La iniciativa “Escondido a Plena Vista” ayuda a los padres a detectar signos de conductas de riesgo a través de una pantalla interactiva que muestra la habitación de un adolescente.

Hidden in Plain Sight Spot signs of at-risk behaviors April 16, 6:30 p.m.

Would you see the signs of youth alcohol or drug use in your home? Looks can be very deceiving especially if you don’t know what to look for. The “Hidden In Plain Sight” initiative helps parents spot signs of atrisk behaviors using an interactive display of a teenager’s bedroom. After walking through the display, participants will learn more about adolescent development and common signs of substance use provided by professionals in law enforcement, treatment, substance abuse prevention and other experts and parents.

This presentation is for adults only. Open house 6:30-8:30 p.m., with a debriefing by experts at 8 p.m.

Tercer Triatlón Anual Nada, Pedalea y Corre para Llegar al Final Dirígete hasta la línea de salida, salta a la alberca Julius Boehm para hacer la primera etapa del evento. 3rd Annual swim, bike and run your way to the finish line!

Jump in the Julius Boehm Pool for the first leg of the course.

Then, hop on your bike for the Rainier Trail Loop where you’ll wrap up the event with a run around the Community Center front lawn. Rain or shine! This is an untimed, ‘just for fun!’ race to give kids a taste of what a triathlon is all about.

Pre-registration only. Youth volunteers are needed!

Un café para adolescentes Los líderes de la comunidad están trabajando con jóvenes locales para crear un Teen Café en Issaquah. Diseñado para ser un lugar frecuentado por los estudiantes de preparatoria, su objetivo es proporcionar un lugar seguro fuera de la escuela, donde los adolescentes puedan reunirse con amigos y acceder a eventos y servicios que requieran.

Community leaders are working with local teenagers to create a Teen Café in Issaquah. Designed to be a hangout spot for high school students, the goal is to provide a safe, drop-in place outside of school where teens can meet friends and access programming and services as needed.

In an effort to create a place where students are not only valued for their differences but cherished for their unique history, beliefs, traditions and perspective, planners are actively working to connect to all populations so that all voices can be heard and appreciated. They know that respecting our differences and celebrating our diversity only serves to make us stronger as a community.

All programming will be developed by a student steering committee, Teens 4 Teens, with representatives from all four high schools. Youth want a place where they can gather with their friends, have a quiet place to study, participate in creative endeavors such as art, poetry, and music, and have access to social services. They want to provide an opportunity for youth to express themselves and find community around their passions, creating a sense of identity.

The Teen Café’s fiscal sponsor is Friends of Youth and they are partnering with the City of Issaquah and Issaquah Coffee Company. They expect to open spring of 2018.

Do You Have Grandparents at Home?

Issaquah and Renton have Senior Centers. Membership is not required and everybody is welcome to visit and spend time in the facility. They offer classes, programs and many opportunities for citizens age 50 and over. Even field trips to casinos and museums!

Now, the North Bellevue Community Center offers activities in different languages. A group of Latino seniors get together on Mondays and Fridays; on Wednesdays they host a Chinese Chorus, and on Saturdays they offer Tai Chi classes. Centro de aprendizaje Tavon Por Therese Vafaeezadeh

Como madre de una mujer con discapacidad, sé que los padres a menudo sienten pánico al pensar que su hijo con discapacidad cumplirá los 21 años y deberá abandonar el sistema escolar. Para nosotros, parecía que no había opciones para nuestra hija después de la preparatoria, pero decidimos no quedarnos con los brazos cruzados.

La historia del centro de aprendizaje Tavon comenzó hace 34 años, cuando nuestra hija Sabah nació con una discapacidad significativa. Ciertamente no esperábamos tener que aprender a ser padres de un niño con discapacidad, pero a medida que Sabah creció, nos atrevimos a tener las mismas esperanzas y sueños que todos los padres tienen para sus hijos: buena salud, felicidad, amigos y comunidad.

Con el paso del tiempo, descubrimos que para ayudar a Sabah a realizar sus sueños teníamos que vencer más desafíos que la mayoría de las familias. As the mother of a woman with a disability, I know the panic parents often feel as their son or daughter with a disability turns 21 and has to leave the school system. For us, it seemed as if there were no options for our daughter beyond high school and that was not acceptable to us.

The story of Tavon Learning Center began 34 years ago when our daughter Sabah was born with a significant disability. We certainly weren’t expecting to have to learn to parent a child with a disability. As Sabah got older, we dared to have the same hopes and dreams that every parent has for their child - good health, happiness, friends and community.

As time went on, we found that we had a few more challenges than most families in helping Sabah realize her dreams.

When Sabah was ready to leave high school, we realized she was losing a big part of her community. She was not heading off to college or into a vocation yet we knew she needed a place where she could continue to work on new skills and remain engaged with the community.

We reached out to friends and family to help us create Tavon Learning Center a place where Sabah could have friends, find happiness, and continue to develop life skills that would make her as independent as possible. The Tavon Learning Center program is now almost ten years old. In this time, we have gone from serving three members to serving 80, and the need continues to grow.

Tavon Learning Center provides active learning programs that are focused in three areas – social development, independent living, and community connections. The programs are designed for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to discover, learn and apply skills in real-life settings.

We use our unique combination of outdoor gardens, community building, real-life practice and peer coaching to help people acquire home and community skills for living better.

Today as I walk in the garden, I see Sabah working with the staff and her friends, and I know that the program at Tavon works. Sabah has friends, community and a sense of purpose. This realization fills me with hope and optimism for my daughter’s future.

¿Alguna vez has escuchado el término “comer limpio”?

Primero que nada debes saber que “comer limpio” no es lo mismo que hacer una dieta, ya que esta palabra muchas veces se refiere a comer cantidades pequeñas o solo ciertos alimentos durante algún tiempo con el objetivo de perder peso.

A grandes rasgos, “comer limpio” consiste en comer casi siempre de manera saludable, evitar alimentos procesados o refinados, es un cambio en el estilo de vida, que supone mejorar tus hábitos alimenticios y así iniciar una nueva relación a largo plazo con la comida.

Piensa en consumir alimentos que no pasaron por muchos procesos o por una fábrica antes de llegar a tu mesa, cocina más, usa productos frescos, más verduras y frutas.

A la hora de escoger alimentos procesados fíjate en los ingredientes, si hay alguno que ni siquiera puedes pronunciar, investiga qué es. Si, por ejemplo, ves una caja de cereal con más de cinco ingredientes, trata de encontrar otro con menos sustancias.

Comer limpio NO debe ser una tortura alimenticia, sino buscar alternativas más sanas. Por supuesto que aún podrás comer ese pedacito de chocolate o papas fritas. Si después de un buen día de ejercicio, se te antoja un pedazo de pastel, ¡comételo!

En una taza mezcla el aceite con el jugo de limón. Añade la mezcla a la ensalada, sazona con sal. ¡Que la disfrutes!

First of all, you should know that clean eating is not a diet since the word “diet” often means limiting yourself to eating small amounts or specific foods during a specific period of time with the goal of losing weight.

Broadly speaking, clean eating means eating a diet that avoids processed or refined foods. It can also mean a change in lifestyle by improving your eating habits and creating a long-term, healthier relationship with food.

Have you Ever Heard of Clean Eating?

Consider consuming food that is less processed and did not go through many steps in a factory to get to your table. Clean eating is simply cooking more at home, using fresh vegetables, fruits and the least processed ingredients.

If choosing processed food, look closely at the ingredient list. If you can’t pronounce something, investigate what it is. If there are more than 5 ingredients listed on a cereal package, maybe you could find one that is less complicated.

Clean eating should NOT be food torture, rather it is to seek healthier alternatives and introduce more fresh fruit and vegetables into your daily diet. Of course, you can still eat that piece of chocolate or a few French fries. If, after a good day of exercise, you crave a piece of cake, eat it! But remember, always in moderation.

Quinoa Cilantro Salad 2 cups of cooked quinoa (cooked in 4 cups of water) 1 bunch of chopped cilantro 1 cup of feta cheese (optional, but if using this don’t add extra salt) 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil juice of 1 lime 1/4-cup pine nuts (or any other nut) When the quinoa is cooked, let it cool. Combine the cilantro and feta (if using) with the cooked quinoa.

In a cup, mix the oil and the lime juice and add it to the salad. Taste for salt, sprinkle with pine nuts and serve.

De Europa del Este a América

Crecí en el campo, en un pintoresco lugar cercano a una ciudad provinciana en la República de Bielorrusia. Emigré a Los Ángeles cuando tenía 16 años. Mi primer año en este nuevo país estuvo lleno de misiones desconocidas, desafiantes y reveladoras. Poco después de que llegamos, comencé la escuela preparatoria.

Era un sistema muy diferente al sistema escolar de mi país. La parte más difícil fue familiarizarme con todos los requisitos y reglas que debía cumplir para poder graduarme de la escuela preparatoria, recibir mi diploma y ser aceptada en la universidad. Tuve mucha suerte porque mi escuela tenía muchos estudiantes de diversas partes del mundo. Además, tenía un excelente departamento de ESL (Inglés como Segundo Idioma), donde hablaban muchos idiomas y ayudaban a los profesores a comunicarse con los estudiantes.

Ahora, como madre de dos estudiantes en el Distrito Escolar de Issaquah, me doy cuenta de lo importante que es familiarizarse con la información básica de cada escuela e incluso de todas las clases. Independientemente del idioma que hablemos en el hogar, nuestros hijos deben sentir que, como padres, podremos ayudarlos a encontrar información, aprovecharla para su beneficio y usar toda la ayuda educativa disponible.

I grew up in the picturesque countryside of a provincial city in the Republic of Belarus and immigrated to the United States of America to Los Angeles when I was 16 years old. My first year in a new country was full of unfamiliar, challenging, and eye-opening quests. Soon after we arrived, I started high school.

It was a very different system compared to the school in my native country. The hardest part of my education was to acquaint myself with all the requirements and rules in order to be able to graduate high school, receive my diploma and be accepted to college. I was very lucky because my school had many students from various parts of the world. Also, it had a great ESL (English as a Second Language) department where assistants could help with many languages to communicate between the teachers and the students.

Cultural Connections

From Eastern Europe to America

Now, as a mother of two students in Issaquah School District, I realize how important it is to familiarize yourself with basic information for every school and even every class. Regardless of the language we speak at home, our children need to feel that as parents we will be able to help with finding information, leveraging it to our kids’ advantage and following through with educational help that is available.

If you asked me for a single piece of advice, I would say: search for information, devour information, be neither afraid nor shy to ask for explanations of any uncertain or foreign concepts. Most likely someone who speaks the same language has been through a similar situation as you are going through now and is willing to help you. Today the information is literally at your fingertips. The Internet is a modern wonder, and you can use it to its full potential. Find forums, channels, blogs, Facebook pages that are maintained by people with deep interest in the subject. Oftentimes, there are online resources frequented by people who speak your language and who have lived here for a long time. They are more than likely to help newcomers and provide unique perspective on how to solve issues pertaining to your cultural and ethnic background. It can be as simple as an education credentials translation service that is deeply familiar with subjects in your country and can translate them most appropriately into subjects recognized by educational authorities.

On a related note, the subject of mathematics in our family is very important, and so is art. My husband and I thought that our children could have supplemental knowledge in both subjects. That is why we have found Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) in Bellevue and take our children to the after-school classes there. Also, for the art enrichment our daughter attended camps at the MuseoArt in Issaquah. There are literally hundreds of choices, and most of them are pretty good around here.

I want to leave you with parting words that welcome you to this thriving multi-ethnic community. Good luck and be sure to take advantage of all the cultural and educational opportunities around here.

Niños con Tres Culturas (o “TCK” en inglés, para abreviar) es un término que se usa para describir a los niños que han pasado una parte importante de sus años de desarrollo fuera de la cultura de sus padres. Debido a que no se relacionan por completo con su cultura nativa, ni con la cultura de sus países de acogida, crean una “tercera” cultura con sus amigos y su familia inmediata. Los niños TCK a menudo viven en varios países y hablan varios idiomas. Son ciudadanos del mundo a los que se les suele describir como “nómadas globales”.

Cuando tenía 12 años, mi familia se mudó de los Estados Unidos a Hong Kong y más tarde a Singapur.

Fui a escuelas internacionales y tuve amigos y maestros de todo el mundo. Para mí, los deportes fueron mi gran unificador. Jugué al rugby con los niños ingleses, australianos y neozelandeses, adoptando algunas de sus coloridas frases coloquiales. Jugué al béisbol con niños japoneses, muchos de los cuales no hablaban inglés. Jugué a baloncesto con niños chinos, entre pollos que corrían por la cancha y ancianos apostando en juegos de azar mientras limpiaban ruidosamente sus gargantas.

Los deportes me proporcionaron un lugar para aprender sobre diferentes culturas e idiomas en un ambiente divertido e informal.

Para cualquier niño que llegue a un país nuevo, si estuviera interesado en los deportes, le recomendaría que se inscriba en un equipo. Es una excelente manera de conocer a otros niños, practicar un nuevo idioma, aprender una nueva cultura, hacer ejercicio y divertirse. Yo pude viajar a varios países de Asia como miembro de mi equipo de rugby de la preparatoria. Observé los paisajes, los sonidos y los gustos de cada país que visité. Cada vez que llegábamos a un nuevo país, mis ojos se abrían y aprendían sobre las diferentes personas que encontraba. Con los deportes, la presión académica desaparece y los niños pueden relajarse y divertirse, mientras aprenden inconscientemente sobre su nuevo país y cultura.

Ser un niño TCK viene con sus propias dificultades y desafíos, sobre todo en el hecho de tener que hacer nuevos amigos constantemente e intentar encajar en la comunidad. Los niños TCK generalmente son renuentes a adquirir lazos personales cercanos o relaciones profundas debido a esto. Sin embargo, en mi experiencia, la vida emocionante de un nómada mundial supera con mucho cualquiera de los aspectos negativos. ¡Si pudiera cambiar algo de mi infancia, no cambiaría nada!

Third Culture Kids (or “TCK’s” for short) is a term used to describe children who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside their parents’ culture. Because they don’t fully relate to their own native culture, nor the culture of their host countries, they create a unique “third” culture with their friends and immediate family. TCK’s often live in multiple countries and speak multiple languages. They are citizens of the world often described as “Global Nomads.”

Many Cultures, the Same Sports!

When I was 12, my family moved from the United States to Hong Kong and later to Singapore. I went to International Schools and had friends and teachers from all over the world. For me, sports were the great unifier. I played rugby with British, Aussie and Kiwi kids, adopting some of their colorful colloquialisms. I played baseball with Japanese kids, many of whom didn’t speak English. I played basketball with Chinese kids in the heart of the city, with live chickens running across the court and old Chinese men betting on the games and loudly clearing their throats. Sports provided a venue for learning about different cultures and languages in a fun, casual environment.

For any young people arriving in a new country, if they were interested in sports, I would strongly recommend that they sign up for a team. It’s a great way to meet other kids, practice a new language, learn a new culture, get some exercise, and have some fun. I was able to travel to multiple countries in Asia as a member of my high school rugby team. I took in the sights, sounds and tastes of each country I visited. Each time we visit a new country, my eyes were opened and I learned anew from the different people I encountered. With sports, the academic pressure is off and young people can let loose and enjoy themselves, while unconsciously learning about their new country and culture at the same time.

Being a TCK comes with its own difficulties and challenges, mostly in the form of constantly having to make new friends and trying to fit in. Third Culture Kids are usually averse to having close personal ties or deep relationships because of this. Nevertheless, in my experience, the exciting life of a global nomad far outweighs any of the negatives. If I could change anything about my childhood, I wouldn’t change a thing!
