Compliance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Among the transversal training objectives of IID is raising awareness of the development policies of the United Nations SDGs, promoting a dialogue with students, teachers and project partners on the identification of existing criticalities and possible strategies. Here are some examples of IID’s commitment on this delicate issue.

Best Before

The academic project “Best Before” is a complaint against food waste, which aims to raise awareness of the global problem of hunger in the world. The project by students Francesco Magi and Francesca Fausti, promoter of an ethical franchise in response to this serious trend, was deemed worthy of attention to the point of exhibiting it in pavilion n. 8 “Sala Giulio Regeni” of the Sustainable Fair of Bastia from 12 to 14 October 2018.1

Library and Conference Cycles IID has been committed for years to providing education not only addressed to its students and collaborators, but also open to the public. IID has often organized seminars, workshops, events and initiatives open to the public and has made its resources accessible not only educational but also structural where it has deemed it appropriate. Among the evidences of this there are some provisions of the Library Rules, which allow access to outsiders, following free registration and membership, for the use of wifi, consultation of the library, use of study rooms and other services. The same events that IID organizes independently or in collaboration with other entities are all open to the public and freely accessible without registration or reservations. In fact, IID has been committed for years to providing quality education that was accessible not only to its students and collaborators, in a manner open to the public. (eg. the scientific themed events “Pane, Scienza e Cioccolato”2 3, included in the cultural activities program of the Municipality of Perugia4) or in collaboration with other bodies and associations (eg legal seminars organized with “Unione Nazionale Consumatori”,5 6 “Associazione Legali Italiani”,7 “European Legal Students Association”8) are all open to public and freely accessible without registration or reservations, precisely because of the didactic mission that IID feels outside the hours of the weekly academic lessons. Below is shown a rich schedule of cultural activities promoted free of charge by IID for dissemination purposes and open to the public. 17

Interpretation of the law with mathematical models9 ‘Predictive’ justice and Artificial Intelligence10 The seminar touched on a still nebulous issue by finding, albeit “provisionally”, a definition and an organic placement in the justice system of artificial intelligence models: starting from the literary definition of predictive justice, such as that which predicts the future, a sort of anticipated justice , passing through the meaning assigned in common language, as predictable justice, the speakers finally defined it as a persuasive tool that helps the operators of justice. Precisely by means of mathematical formulas, judicial interpretation could be introduced, in accordance with the need for legal certainty, intended precisely not only as predictability of the applicable law provision, but also as predictability of the judicial outcome.

Projects with schools. Workshop for children and school-work alternation The Institute’s commitment to providing quality education often starts from school, when young minds are still in their full development. Over the years, IID has entered into several strategic partnerships with schools, both for school-work alternation agreements and for professional training projects, workshops and contests. In 2015, IID launched a competition for the award of some scholarships (later awarded to the students of an artistic high school in Macerata17) and planned several workshops and design workshops for children. Also in collaboration with schools, the workshop of a design laboratory for the children of the Sandro Pertini Primary School in Montesano (LE)18 19. During the summer, on the other hand, IID promoted a free project for children and sponsored by the Umbria Region20 called “Design Summer Center: a design workshop for children with the architect Stefano Chiocchini, IID teacher. With reference instead to higher secondary education institutions, the Institute has entered into several strategic partnerships by promoting school-work alternation paths (eg with the Mameli Omnicomprensivo Institute of Deruta and the San Francesco Institute of Perugia). Finally, every year, representatives and teachers of the Institute go to the various high schools in central Italy for the purpose of university orientation activities, presenting to the students of the last classes the educational and professional forms that they can undertake in the Design sector21.

Seminars and Workshops Among the free and open events of great cultural importance was held at the IID campus on November 20, 2015, when the famous reporter and journalist Toni Capuozzo was invited to talk about his book on Italian marines accused of killing Indian fishermen , this event was free and open to all outside the Institute22. The training also passes from actuality, and during this event the IID staff and the external public listened directly to the story contained in his book ‘The secrets of the marines’, the result of the journalistic investigation conducted by Capuozzo around to the story of the two riflemen of the Italian navy, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone. It was a real lesson in investigative journalism, useful for ‘contaminating’ training with cultural elements that go beyond the academic program to open one’s mind and better understand society. “Italy and India - we read on the blog ‘Mezzi Toni’ of Capuozzo - on the question of the marines, they look like two poker players arguing over a detail, the window open because one smokes too many cigarettes, the light that the other would like more dim , avoiding the mother of all problems: the cards that each of the two has in hand”23. On this particular occasion, IID interviewed the well-known reporter who passed “on the other side of the microphone”. Still many free events open to the public organized by IID among which we include, among others: “Made With Love” of 10 March 2018, the professional course in comics on 14 April 201824 and 14 May 201825. Another event open to public is that of 23 May 2018, relating to a project carried out in collaboration with the Municipality of

During the academic year 2019/2020 IID has been officially invited for professional university orientation activities in the following high schools: Liceo Artistico di Arezzo; Giovagnoli Giovagnoli Art School of S. Sepolcro; Art School of Siena; Art School of Empoli; Liceo Artistico Mar-Cones of Foligno; Blaise Pascal Higher Institute of Perugia; IPSIA of Perugia; Aldo Capitini Institute of Perugia; ITIS A. Perugia and the Fccalligraphy Company for the year dedicated by the European Union to Cultural Heritage. The project aimed to discover the heritage contained in the ancient libraries of Perugia (ancient books, ccdd. “Incunabula”) guided by expert calligraphers26. Another seminar held on 6 October 2018 and organized by IID in collaboration with the Umbria Region (administrative division: “Umbria Libri”, editoria@regione.umbria. it) and the Municipality of Perugia. The event, hosted by the Faculty of Agriculture of Perugia27, involved the teachers of the Institute Lorenzo Dogana (Photographer) Daniele Pampanelli (Graphic designer) and Gianluca Sandrone (Designer and Editor), called to illustrate their professional paths by dealing with the difficulties of the trade. This project is also an example of IID collaboration with both institutions and other universities for the purpose of cultural propagation.

Radio Design: the cult web radio of Istituto Italiano Design Radio Design is a web radio born in 2018 from the desire to tell the stories of people who every day, starting from an idea, create a product or a project. Podcasts are regularly posted and distributed free of charge on various web platforms, first of all www. radiodesign.it (domain owned by the Institute). It all starts with the need to communicate how design is a fundamental part of the economy. By declining the schedules in the four main areas of Design (Graphic, Fashion, Industrial and Interior) different themes can be addressed, involving a wide audience. Radio Design mainly deals with themes dedicated to the field of de-

sign, addressing various areas developed in the institute’s three-year study courses. The primary intent is to communicate how everything that is “project” is inherent to the territory, national and international. Among the prominent interviews those with Vito Nesta - Designer with an excellent curriculum, just think that some of his creations have been exhibited at the MOMA and Visiting Professor IID; to Chiara Alessi, curator of the Alessi Museum and granddaughter of Alfonso Bialetti who patented the famous coffee maker which has become an icon of our “Made in Italy”; and again to Giovanna Castiglioni, Toni Capuozzo, Nicoletta Spagnoli, the honorable Lella Golfo and many more.

Didactic mission The didactic mission of this tool is certainly to involve the students of the various courses to give them the right interpersonal and public speaking skills, essential in the world of work especially for a freelancer. The students who join the project are led by IID teacher Nicola Palumbo, radio host with many years of experience to date Digital Marketing Manager of Listone Giordano at national level, a brand for which he supervises the planning and monitoring processes of digital activities. What the project wants to convey through the programs and the voice of the students is the importance of the role of Design not only as “creative thinking” but above all as a scientific, technical and economic activity. In this regard, IID structure, together with the panel of professionals of various kinds with which it constantly surrounds itself, real schedules that, according to the different study areas, will address specific topics, often with that light tone that often characterizes radio activities. Some of the columns that have been carried out during these years concern popular themes treated, however, from the special point of view of the Designer, who looks with the critical eyes of a graphic designer or communication expert.

Conversations on craftsmanship Several schedules concern fashion and design in their most “primitive” expression, that of craftsmanship. It is a precious resource for addressing and perhaps overcoming the ongoing economic crisis that has afflicted our country for some time now. The interviews for the most part revolve around the concept of “know-how”, of “handmade” synonymous with haute coture. The radio also deals with the topic of food, food and wine, with dedicated programs such as, for example, Bang Ale !, developed

by two communication students together with prof. Palumbo, which analyzes beer labels from a semiotic point of view, combining the passion for graphics with that of the drink that is produced by skilled craftsmen with the use of raw materials at km 0. Again Brand Pitt, a program that aims to ‘goal of analyzing iconic national and international brands to tell their evolution not only in history, but also from a graphic and marketing point of view. The creative ferment, curiosity, exploration and enhancement of the Institute’s territory are perfectly reflected in Radio Design, which, precisely for this reason, can only be in constant evolution. Creative minds, if well “informed and trained” can give added value to products and services by becoming strategic for the Italian territory.

GENDER EQUALITY

33

34

The women of the Bellisario foundation and the men of ALI IID promotes gender equality also by collaborating with the Marisa Bellisario Foundation, of which it is a member. The foundation, established pursuant to art. 28 of the law n. 49/87 and legally recognized by the DPCM on 11 June 1996, it is one of the most active at national level in terms of support for strengthening the professionalism of women working in the public and private sectors, promoting the culture of gender equality. IID entitled one of the frescoed rooms inside its headquarters (Palazzo Ranieri di Sorbello) to Marisa Bellisario. IID is sensitive to gender equality even when men are the weakest. For this reason, on 20 December 2019 IID hosted a conference organized in collaboration with the Italian Legal Association and the National Consumers Union, promoted by the Perugia Bar Association, on the delicate subject of the so-called “Invisible violence”. On this occasion, experts from various sectors, from the legal to the socio-psychological, intervened to illustrate the current problems that grip husbands and fathers of families, who are frequently denied their rights in court. On 9 July 2018 IID organized an event in collaboration with the “Marisa Bellisario Foundation”28, of which it is a partner in the persons of the President Anna Maria Russo and the head of the International

Relations Committee Benedetta Risolo29. On that occasion, IID named a frescoed room after this extraordinary woman on the occasion of a seminar on gender equality: “to the first Italian top manager capable of combining femininity and career, a revolutionary model in the battle against prejudices”. So says the inscription engraved on the plaque during a ceremony which saw the participation of the Hon. Lella Golfo, President of the Foundation, parliamentarian, Commander and Knight of the Republic, has always been committed to defending women’s rights (she is a signatory of the so-called law number 120 of 2011 on ‘pink quotas’). Through this event, IID intended to draw the attention of the political world, institutions and businesses to innovative ideas and projects that promote and support the affirmation of the role of women and promote a strong message of gender equality. The Hon. Lella Golfo, president of the Foundation, who held a seminar open to the public on gender equality, which was attended by some of the main companies in central Italy. Local institutions also took part in the IID event, the Mayor of Perugia Andrea Romizi himself was present at the press conference and the councilors Maria Teresa Severini and Cristiana Casaioli, the first councilor for culture and the second for commerce of the Municipality of Perugia, actively participated in the event. Lella Golfo Foundation communicated it to the General Secretariat of the United Nations with a letter dated 16 April 2019 in which she sent the reporting of the activities promoted in favor of SDG no. 5 - Gender Equality30. The Institute has always actively participated in the initiatives promoted by the Foundation in favor of female entrepreneurship, taking part in annual national events such as “Women Economy and Power”31. Policies in support of the family The Institute expressly recognizes the desire for motherhood as an inalienable and fundamental right in a woman’s life. Therefore IID has always promoted policies that facilitate its staff in the creation of a stable family unit. The same Code of Harassment provides in this regard as follows: “IID provides, in support of its teaching staff, the retention of the job for the period following the compulsory absence required by Italian law.

Laura Biancalana, IID Professor

Serena Logozzo, IID Professor

The working conditions set up by IID ensure and promote the fulfillment of the essential family function and ensure special and adequate protection for the mother and child, the institute guarantees that the job occupied by the teacher who will take advantage of the leave will be kept until the end of motherhood, without any risk of losing your job. IID has always been sensitive to the issue of gender equality, guaranteeing not only compliance with the law but also preserving the rights of pregnant teachers for the period after childbirth up to the first years of the newborn’s life.

33. Event: This assumption can also be demonstrated through various self-certifications made following periods of maternity leave by IID staff.

38

IID guarantees its teaching staff, following a specific request to that effect, the possibility of carrying out a part of their work in teleworking mode during the entire year following the period of absence required by law (maternity leave) when special requests due to the psycho-physical conditions of the teacher make it appropriate. IID has always implemented policies in line with the SDGs of the United Nations and in support of the universally recognized rights of SRH (sexual and reproductive health) as determining factors for an improvement in everyone’s quality of life”. On several occasions the provisions of its code have found acceptance in reality33.

The underrepresented groups The Institute is committed to promoting equal opportunities in a broad sense, providing policies and strategies to attract the admission to its courses of under-represented groups including ethnic minorities, low-income students, non-traditional students, women, LGBT students and students with disabilities. In the previous paragraph some examples of inclusive policies for low-income students (provision of scholarships), women and the disabled were illustrated. IID also promotes active policies in defense of the rights of the categories of people represented, for example LGBT students. Within the Code of Harassment it is possible to read how “sexual harassment” should also be considered “sexual harassment” about the body or sexual orientation - LGBT - offensive and inappropriate “. Raising awareness of the LGBT issue is particularly dear to the Institute, which also promotes it through academic projects34.

Click Lights in Action On 25 February 2017 IID participated in the national contest “Click - Lights in Action” in Tavernelle di Panicale35. The project presented, created for the “Click - Lights in Action” event, is part of the proposals present at national level as part of the M’Illumino di Meno initiative, an event on energy saving promoted by the broadcast of Radio2 Caterpillar36. The initiative was born from the idea of deepening the theme of light in relation to sustainability and energy saving, also trying to explore the interesting concept of darkness as the absence of light and as a search for experiences through the senses other than sight. This is a campaign on the responsible use of electricity which aims primarily to raise awareness of SDG no. 7, but also to SDGs nos. 11, 12, 13. The first project presented by IID is a dynamic Led

The second and third IID projects were instead presented in a covered structure made available by the Betania Village Oratory in Tavernelle to host some screenings. They were in fact two courts entitled “Lux Monstris” and “2000K”37 (students Carla Costanza - Matteo Bevignani - Francesco Capuano - Simone Citti), short stories in which the game between light and dark helps to explore one’s fears and rediscover forgotten emotions and affections. The IID student courts have been awarded in competitions nationwide. The short “2000k” won the “Special Energy Saving Award” of the national competition “Take back the city”38 announced by “AIDI” (“Italian Lighting Association”) and sponsored by Enel, an Italian multinational of electricity and gas. The award ceremony in which IID participated took place inside the Cinema Museum in the Mole Antonelliana in Turin. In the academic year 2019/2020 IID has created a video project to promote and raise awareness against the pollution of the planet called “say NO to Pollution”39.

The Harassment Code

IID has issued the “Harassment Code” in order to ensure that all the activities of IID personnel and of those who come into contact with IID for professional and academic reasons are carried out without engaging in any type of discrimination with reference to gender, disability, ethnicity, religion and more. In order to make these rules even more effective, a Diversity and Equality Officer has been set up to enforce these rules. Financial benefits and the elimination of cognitive barriers The Institute’s commitment to the elimination of economic and social diversity does not stop at theory. Over the years, IID has in fact allocated various scholarships to deserving students who often lack the necessary means to attend their courses42. Some students have issued a self-certification declaration to the Institute certifying that they have been recipients of a scholarship from the Institute in order to attend the desired course43. The fight that the Institute actively promotes against inequalities can also be seen in making training accessible to all regardless of any difficulties in the cognitive sphere44. In addition, on more than one occasion, the Institute has admitted students who had more or less severe difficulties in the cognitive sphere due to pathologies or deficiencies to attend its classes, making their

social integration possible. The same projects promoted by IID teaching are geared to denounce discrimination and develop strategies to combat it. These include the one presented to the French multinational leader in the furniture and DIY sector Leroy Merlin “Formula: Design for All”45 46 47 and the one created for AIDP “Abilitiamo la Disabilità”48. Formula is the design of a bathroom that is as functional and safe as possible, without obstacles for the disabled, children, the elderly, large families or mononuclear people. This has led to the creation of modular furniture that can be used “by all” and to the implementation of the environment with home automation that is attentive to energy saving and relaxation. Great attention was also paid to the use of materials with high environmental sustainability. “We are collaborating with IID remembered Brunori, project partner for PEFC Italia - to give a message of an ethical nature. The second is a national initiative promoted by AIDP - Italian Association of Personnel Directors, of which IID is a member (Anna Maria Russo, Founder; Benedetta Risolo, International Relations) together with Accenture, ATM, IBM, NestlĂŠ, Unicredit, Intesa San Paolo , Itaca Project, Gaetano Bertini Malgarini Onlus Foundation, Lexellent Studio Legale, Alstom. Municipality of Milan and ASST Fatebenefratelli Sacco. The initiative intends to promote measures to promote the employment development of people with disabilities in the world of work, experimenting and implementing practical and operational conditions so that their integration is facilitated from all points of view. The initiative is presented in Milan on 3 December 2019 at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart as part of the Disability and work workshop.

Urban redevelopment projects The Institute’s commitment to urban redevelopment projects is articulated and profuse. Listed below are just some of the occasions in which IID has made its contribution in regenerating buildings, neighborhoods, outdoor spaces in collaboration with local authorities, institutions, hospitals and other entities. In the 2017/2020 academic years, several projects related to this theme took place. A first example of this commitment consists in the renovation of the plant site with an adjoining educational park for children for the company Gesenu Spa49, a public-priva-te joint venture founded in 1980 by the Municipality of Peru-gia for the management of environmental hygiene services50.

Another project, which takes the name of “La Casina Rossa”, third place51 in the international contest “Observatory on the House” announced by the French furniture multinational Leroy Merlin52. The contest concerned the recovery and conversion of a disused building, assigned to the La Banda Degli Orsi ONLUS association. The IID students designed rooms for the families of the children admitted to the Giannina Gaslini Institute in Genoa, families who could therefore be accommodated in a place that facilitated sharing and meeting, designed according to the themes that emerged from the research on the “ideal home ”Of the Observatory on the Home: attentive to health, comfortable to live in, saving money and respectful of the environment53. Still on the subject of healthcare, another important project was presented by IID for the redevelopment of the former hospital in Monteluce (now transferred to that of San Sisto) to convert it into residential modules54.

During the 2017/2020 academic years, IID participates in “Officine Fratti”55, a project of urban regeneration and development of youth entrepreneurship promoted by the Municipality of Perugia in collaboration with IID and various bodies (ON Association, Confcooperative Umbria, Regional Youth Forum, SCS ASAD, SCS BorgoRete, SCS Nuova Dimensione and SCS Polis). The initiative is co-financed by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers 58

Department of Youth and the National Civil Service, as part of the public call for the presentation of project proposals for the development of youth creativity for urban regeneration “Young Creative ReGenerations” , and promoted by ANCI, has provided for work grants (of about € 800.00 each)56. It is a space of about 300 square meters where new paths of encounter between the community and new economic actors can be created, capable of generating shared work paths (e.g. artisan, design, ICT, ... etc.)57. IID students, supervised by the professors of lighting and design Walter Risolo and Laura Biancalana, have designed and built the lighting system paying particular attention to sustainability58. In the same academic year, in collaboration with the Municipality of Perugia, the visual concept of the “Nuovo Mercato Coperto”59 was presented: seven projects aimed at implementing territorial marketing actions that improve the image of the city, focused on brand identity proposals and communication strategies60. In the same academic year, IID undertook a further collaboration with the Municipality of Perugia for the study of the internal communication of the Municipal Libraries of Perugia61 with the aim of creating a generative system that allows internal staff to manage all visual communication online and offline in complete autonomy and budget tending to zero62 (with a design tool conceived and designed by an IID student). During the following academic year, IID was actively involved in the “Binario5” initiative (among the promoters: Municipality of

Perugia and Confcooperative), an urban redevelopment which envisages the opening of a new co-working space at the Fontivegge di Perugia station. IID students created seven installations: drawings, photographs, adhesive tapes, post-its, wallpapers and painting for this space.

Metropolitan Market with Andrea Rasca On 29 November 2017, IID had the privilege, thanks to relationships of mutual esteem and collaboration, to host a seminar by the entrepreneur Andrea Rasca87. Rasca is the founder of the Mercato Metropolitano, a street food market hall in South London. Rasca’s intervention strongly oriented the work of students and teachers involved in the project of the new covered market in Perugia, commissioned by the Municipality of Perugia thanks to the memorandum of understanding signed with the Councilor for Territorial Marketing Michele Fioroni. Andrea Rasca shared with IID his experience in building a sustainable city and community. The seminar focused on the redevelopment of urban areas that pay particular attention to the activity of small artisans, thus promoting the cultural and social assistance aspects (concept of “glocalization”). ‘Small is beautiful’ and ‘natural is good’ are the principles of inspiration for his successful project. Thanks to this initiative, the students were able to learn the philosophy behind the Rasca brand, linked not only to food, but which is expressed in va-

rious fields. There has been talk of craftsmanship and Made in Italy around the world, all with a view to ‘small is beautiful’. An idea of happy island and zero-kilometer production that was well suited to the project of the new covered market in Perugia. “The educational aspect” - commented Rasca - “being a very important part of the Metropolitan Market and we believe it is essential to be able to talk to young people. Our project aims to restore value and power to small agricultural producers, artisans and young people, to recreate a sustainable consumer and retail environment”. On this precious training and awareness-raising opportunity, IID accompanied Rasca, together with the councilor for territorial marketing and urban furniture of the Municipality of Perugia, Michele Fioroni and the mayor, Andrea Romizi, to make an inspection of the structure of the covered market in the redevelopment phase. . “The design” continued Rasca “must not prevail over the content. It must be like a tailored suit made ad hoc on what you find and on the proposal that must be made. It must not ignore the content, as many commercial outlets do today: beautiful places where, however, the product is not so good. We want the opposite ”. The lesson with Andrea Rasca was in total alignment with the objectives of the IID project for the new Covered Market in Perugia: among these there is in fact the introduction of social finance tools capable of guaranteeing access to the market not only for big players but above all for small farmers and traders who can make the most of local supply chains.

Access to places of interest The Ministry Secretary of State for Public Education, in the person of M. Iervolino, having regard to law no. 1089 of 1939 concerning the protection of things of artistic and historical interest, on October 15 1995 considered the headquarters of the Institute, a building owned by Count Ranieri Bourbon del Monte Lodovico fu Ruggero, a “valuable example of civil architecture of the 17th century with beautiful examples of stately rooms inside, decorated in the early 19th century ”. IID, always promoting the dissemination of culture in all its facets, provides free access to the frescoed rooms of its headquarters for the visit of the assets of historical and artistic interest. 61

In particular, the venue consists of a historic garden (Roof Garden) which houses a plane tree over 400 years old and ancient stone amphorae. IID often organizes events on its premises to share a place so mystical and rich in beauty. Among the major events hosted performances by choirs, theatrical and cultural companies. He also promoted performances by the Teatro di Sacco of Perugia and the Tritonus choir directed by Maestro Franco Radicchia, also on occasions such as the folkloristic event “Perugia 1416”64. Over the years, the Institute has also organized events that promote guided tours to places of particular historical interest. Among these we can include some such as the exhibition on “Mustachoc: the history of the mustache”, held within the renowned international “Eurochocolate” event which took place in the historic building of the “Umbrò”65 re-

In January 2021, the Institute was also invited by the Department of Culture at the Municipality of Perugia and by the Cari Perugia Arte Foundation of the Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia, to exhibit the 2019/20 capsule collections of the Triennial Study Course in Design in places of prestige open to the public for the anniversary of the seventh centenary of Dante Alighieri. The IID collection is in fact inspired by the elements that represent the circles of the famous Dante’s Opera: Aria (Paradise), Earth (Purgatory) and Fire (Hell)70.

Access to outdoor exhibition spaces IID undertakes to provide free public access to gardens, museums, exhibition spaces, galleries and works of art and artifacts, as the following initiatives demonstrate. Since 2014 IID has always participated, often ranking among the best, in the national

contest “Ortogiardino” in Pordenone71 - most recently present at the 40th edition in 201972. In 2018, the “Primadonna” project by arch. Stefano Chiocchini73, sponsored by the Institute of which he is still a teacher today, was awarded the first prize of the event74. From 4 to 9 April 2017, the IID students, after taking care of the installation, opened an exhibition space to the public in Via Tortona n. 4 in Milan75. The aim of the project is the redevelopment of the Milan area. The following year, from 8 to 14 April, IID participated in collaboration with ABA Perugia in the organization of the event “Cazzotto 2018: art interventions in the center of Perugia”76, during which numerous artists performed in the areas outdoors and in the premises made available by the promoters77. Still among the outdoor events in which IID participated, the “Perugia Flower Show” festival, held in the park of Frontone in Perugia from 3 to 5 May 201878, deserves a mention. During the event, IID set up an exhibition space with some projects of packaging made by its students and organized free workshops with access to the green areas of the Frontone gardens. Finally, from 2015 to date, IID is a graphic partner at the “Porchettiamo” territory promotion event, sponsored by local institutions such as the Umbria Region and the Municipality of Perugia79.

Preservation of the historical heritage The cultural commitment of the Institute, with reference to the sustainability objective no. 11, also includes the promotion of projects aimed at the registration and preservation of historical heritage. IID, aware of having to carry out any maintenance work on its premises in compliance with the provisions of the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage, has initiated and supervised various practices and investments over the years, aimed at the conservation of its garden and historic building. The sensitivity of IID towards this delicate issue goes beyond the preservation of its headquarters and extends thanks to academic projects aimed at the registration and preservation of historical heritage. For example, an experimental thesis presented in 2018 concerning the registration and preservation of the high artistic heritage of the ancient building of the Hotel Fontebella Palace in Assisi80, with its 1577 years of history81. 66

“Tessere” project and collaboration with the National Gallery of Umbria - MIBACT The project “Period fabrics, today’s clothes” is based on the revitalization of ancient period fabrics in a modern key by extracting current methods of use from ancient paintings and fabrics, eg. clothes, upholstery, tablecloths, curtains etc. The project is mainly divided into the three areas “Interior Design and Furnishing”, “Costume Design” and “Communication Design” and coordinated by the reference teachers. In addition to this first project, the collaboration with the National Gallery of Umbria extends to the part relating to the management of its social channels. Task of the students, coordinated by Prof. Luca Garosi, the elaboration of an editorial proposal regarding the management of the social channels of Facebook, Instagram, Spotify and Pinterest. The first phase therefore concerns the analysis of the data provided by GNU (e.g. insight data) with reference to the aforementioned channels, while the second phase concerns a concrete proposal for an editorial plan that includes GNU opening event scheduled for the summer, 2020.

From the Narnia Festival to the Salone del Mobile for non-honey bees With regard to the promotion of objective no. 12 IID has been particularly active in its sub-paragraphs 12.4 - environmentally friendly management of waste throughout its life cycle and significantly reduce its release into air, water and soil, in order to minimize its negative effects on human health and the environment - and 12.5 - substantially reduce waste production through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse. For this purpose, the “Don’t eat me” project is mentioned, which denounces our pollution in the dish: it was born from the idea of creating apparently tasty and gourmet dishes but which in reality turn out to be toxic and inedible. The “recipes” were devised following an in-depth research into the disposal and processing processes of some polluting materials, culminating in a physico-chemical analysis of the environmental impact of these substances. The same polluting materials were then used as ingredients for the very original recipes, a combination of culinary verve and toxicity. The goal is clearly to raise awareness of the current situation of waste management. The project, with a strong social impact, was exhibited during the Narnia Festival81 82, ed. 2018.

With reference instead to the sustainability objective no. 15 IID’s commitment manifests itself in various projects. The goal aims to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of the terrestrial ecosystem, manage forests sustainably, promote the sustainable management of all types of forests, stop deforestation and increase reforestation globally. With reference to the fourth paragraph of objective 12 - ensure the conservation of ecosystems including biodiversity, in order to improve their ability to provide services that are essential for sustainable development; stop the loss of biological diversity - IID is the promoter of a recent initiative aimed at the preservation of biodiversity: Bee House. For this project, IID has signed an agreement with the Monti del Tezio cultural promotion association, and continues its long-term collaboration with the well-known leader of parquet Listone Giordano. The Bee House project concerns the construction of houses for non-honey bees, at risk of extinction, and is divided into three phases. The first phase consisted in the organization of a cycle of in-depth seminars on the topic of “Digital Wood Design” by the project partner Margaritelli S.p.A., owner of the “Listone Giordano” brand with the student body and teaching staff of IID. During this learning phase, the company illustrated how the woody raw material used derives only from “certified” forests, ie managed in a sustainable way, with a specific focus on that of Città della Pieve. During this phase, a seminar was held for IID students by Prof. Tiziano Gardi, ento-

mologist and holder of the chair of Beekeeping at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Perugia. The second concerns the design, and subsequent construction, of small “houses” for homeless non-honey bees, in order to guarantee them a refuge in the forests and favor their reproduction. Finally, the project will be communicated through the identification of common channels and, once completed (by Margaritelli Spa with the use of PEFC certified wood), installed in the wooded area of Monte Tezio. The public promotion of the initiative, of great impor-

tance in the protection of biodiversity, was planned within the exhibition space of the Fuori Salone di Margaritelli Spa during the international Salone del Mobile in Milan83. The prototypes of the project were made for its presentation on 27 September 2020 at the F.A.I. at Villa del Cardinale, in collaboration with the Umbrian Museum System (MIBACT)84. The project is also presented in Rome on November 9, 2020 on the occasion of the scientific meeting on the world of pollinators promoted by the “Red de Científicos Argentinos en Italia” (RCAI) through the III Commission of Biological and Health Sciences, at the Casa Argentina (Argentine Embassy). Also present at the meeting were the Argentine Ambassador to the United Nations in Rome Carlos Cherniak and representatives of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA).

83. The promotion was postponed due to the postponement of the 2020 edition of the “Salone del Mobile” for reasons related to the Covid-19 pandemic. 84. Promoting sustainable use of the terrestrial ecosystem, managing forests: Forests 4 Fashion (3F) “3F: Forests 4 Fashion”85 is a project promoted by IID which has as its object the research of innovations in technologies and materials for sustainable design86, paying particular attention to the world of forests. The project was conceived by the Institute and developed in collaboration with PEFC87, a non-governmental organization and certification body for eco-sustainable forests based in Geneva, Switzerland (certification program, “Endorsement of Forest Certification”). The first phase conducted by the IID students was an accurate search for materials of forest origin such as cypress yarns, mushroom leather, cellulose fabrics of eucalyptus and beech (lyocell, modal and viscose), wood veneer fabrics and cork fabrics. In fact, with this project we tried not only to make design an instrument for enhancing the forest-wood supply chain but also to create a valid alternative in the choice of raw materials used in the fashion sector, one of the most polluting in the world. The choice to communicate sustainability through the fashion design channel derives from recent data that show the high environmental and social impact of this sector, responsible for a high waste of water resources (due to the massive use of cotton and synthetic fibers). With the growing concern about the misuse of limited water resources, the abuse of pesticides and the problems associated

with the use of fossil fuels, the use of fibers derived from the wood of certified forests managed in a sustainable way is excellent opportunity not to negatively affect the environment. Innovative materials such as those used by the students, object of the research - viscose, modal and lyocell - have less impact both in terms of use of resources and in the use of non-polluting chemical reagents. The garments and accessories designed were work uniforms made with materials derived from cork, cypress, beech and eucalyptus yarns, which offer greater softness than silk and cotton and, at the same time, are more breathable. IID intended to promote the potential of certified forest-based materials in design by creating a totally sustainable collection of clothes and accessories. For this project IID collaborated with partners who support the same goal: Alceste shoes (Italy) shoes and objects in wood and cork, ArtigianMobili (Italy) wooden objects, A. Sampaio & Filhos (Portugal) clothes and fabrics, Dolpi (Italy ) producer of wooden eyewear, Granorte (Portugal) producer of cork, Lenzing (Austria) producer of certified cellulose fibers. The student authors of the collection are: Marco Rossi, Valerio Mercurii, Maria Rosaria Franco, Roberta Pezzotti, Alessandra Perna88. This project therefore supports sustainable forest management and ethical fashion to meet the 17 sustainability goals that the United Nations has set for 2030. The collection of clothes and accessories created from forest products was presented in Perugia on 23 June 2017 in a fashion show in the prestigious headquarters of the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria89, and was then the subject of several National TV services (RAI1 - Linea Verde90, RAI391).

Raising awareness against violence against children with “Save the Children” Among the projects aimed at this specific sustainability objective, the one delivered on the occasion of the “Socially Correct” competition of “Save the Children”, for which a promotional campaign to raise awareness on the delicate issue of violence against children was delivered. Socially Correct represents an opportunity for art and communication students to create campaigns on important social issues, but it also has a real chance for the winners to start their careers in the prestigious Saatchi & Saatchi. IID participated in the 10th edition of the competition on the theme of violence against children under the age of three. The winning campaign was conceived by IID students Antonio Penco, Art Director and Luigi Mameli, Copywriter and presented by Lorenzo Terragna, Senior Copywriter of Saatchi & Saatchi. The set goal was to raise awareness of physical and emotional abuse that leads to immediate and potential damage to the child’s health, development potential and dignity with a clear message: violence against children exists and we must fight it every day. The image proposed by the students, entitled “Certain wounds remain open”, is of great impact in its simplicity: a teddy bear with a torn arm101. Giorgio Ferrara, Artistic Director of the Festival dei Due Mondi and Filippo Ungaro of Save the Children Italy participated in the awards event together with Anna Maria Russo - IID president102 103.

MADY IN ITALY PROMOTION

IID project "Design in Fermento" exhibited during EXPO in Milan (Italian Pavillon)

Promotion of Made in Italy, of the Territory and preservation of craftsmanship. Participation in national events and fairs In the years, IID has always been active with initiatives that promote Made in Italy in the world and preserve the precious local craftsmanship. Among the various projects, one in particular deserves to be mentioned the one exhibited at EXPO-2015104: Design in Fermento105. Design in ferment is an initiative created in 2015 by the Institute in collaboration with the Deruta School of Ceramic Art and seven Umbrian breweries. The project was deemed worthy of particular attention by the institutions, in particular by the Centro Estero Umbria, for its desire to combine the enterprising spirit of the new generation of Umbrian breweries. The idea was born of designing a bottle that, through shape, color and aesthetic identity, would immediately represent the values of contemporaneity and bond with the territory, of which beer today is still an interpreter within the Umbria system. The design phase was coordinated by Monica Pioggia and Marta Toni (teachers of the Institute) with the participation of the students Gabriele Santocchi, Jean Paul Mod Affari, Gianraffaele Ciannavei, Matteo Stucchi, Alla Korolkova, Francesco Capuano, Riccardo Angeletti, Damiano Disperati and Carla Costanza. Nine proposals were presented by IID for the lo-

cal beers participating in the project [Birra Perugia, Birra S. Biagio, Birra Flea, Birra del Mulino dei Bianchi, Birrificio Tuderte, Birrificio dei Perugini and Birrificio Artigianale Fortebraccio]. The three bottles chosen were made together with the Deruta Ceramic Art School, in porcelain stoneware, which has characteristics similar to glass but enhanced by the ability to maintain the optimal temperature for beer constant. The students created the bottles and developed a coordinated communication that for their visual identity: image, cartouches and three-dimensional packaging then created by a local paper converting company. The bottles were made in a limited edition of 300 pieces and presented on 24 September at EXPO Milan106 (ADI Food Design Lab in Via Bramante n.42) presenting beer and design under the common star of the Umbrian identity. Design in turmoil has been included by Centro Estero Umbria in projects with a high innovative coefficient which, through the Casa Umbria format, testify to the Umbrian value and excellence in the world. The project was also included within the Umbria Food Cluster, a network of professionals and ADI training centers. In addition to this project, IID has promoted over the years numerous projects

The first, ALI, brings together numerous professionals, of different professional backgrounds, linked by a common purpose, that of promoting and updating the juridical and legal culture, as well as enhancing the Free Professions. The second, UNC, deals with disseminating the rights of defense of the person and promoting the development of communications aimed at exercising the profession and is the first consumer association in Italy independent of political parties and trade unions with the exclusive purpose of protecting and representing consumers through assistance, information, education and guidance for citizens. UNC, a member of the CNCU at the Ministry of Economic Development, has social promotion purposes approved by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies. The convention that IID currently has in place with these associations is as follows: • joint participation in European projects; • organization of seminars and conferences; • organization of workshops with companies; • organization of lessons in collaboration with any training bodies or associations; • scientific research and consultancy activity. The contact person of IID for the activities in collaboration with these legal / legal associations is the partner and contact person for both the Legal Department and the International Relations Committee Avv. Benedetta Risolo121, who actively participates as a lawyer in the initiatives122 of UNC Umbria123. Since the conclusion of the agreement, the parties have collaborated in or-

ganizing cycles of free conferences open to the public on legal issues of great interest to citizens. The conferences organized are sponsored by local government authorities and included by the Order of Lawyers, Accountants and Labor Consultants among the events that give the right to the recognition of professional training credits. These series of conferences are part of IID’s general objective of promulgating all forms of culture, not just that of design and planning, free of charge and open to the public to create an aware awareness of their rights even in designers. Here are some of the most important conferences organized more recently, where IID contributed both in terms of organization and research conducted by the IID and UNC contact person Avv. Benedetta Risolo.

Scientific-themed cultural dissemination: cycles of scientific-themed conferences of “Pane Scienza e Cioccolata”

106

This initiative promotes a series of scientific themed conferences designed for the “non-experts” (for example for professionals in the world of Art and Design). The idea came from Eng. Walter Risolo, Director of the Institute who has always been passionate about astronomy and natural sciences, and by Arch. Stefano Chiocchini, IID teacher of interior design since 2010. The manifesto proposed by the initiative, sponsored by the StarLight Association, is very rich and full of interesting topics. The series of lectures is held by academic and non-academic experts to involve and interest a varied audience that is not necessarily “experts”. Recurring speakers and / or moderators Eng. Walter Risolo, Arch. Stefano Chiocchini and Dr. Simonetta Ercoli for the StarLight Association. At their side a varied panel made up of special guests including university professors, representatives of associations, organizations and national and international research bodies. To name a few, prof. Roberto Nesci of the National Institute of Astrophysics, INAF Institute for Space Astrophysics and Planetology IAPS, Dr. Eleonora Passeri, MSBSc, PhD Member of the Pan-European MINDDS Cost Action Network, Dr. Alberto Villa, President of the Alta Caldera Astrofili Association, and composer Khalid Shomali. The conferences are designed “two-way” with a feedback phase, or questions from

the audience, adequately extended. The initiative’s mission is to deal with even highly complex topics by explaining them in an understandable way, disseminated in the inspiring lines and deprived if necessary of unnecessary technical or mathematical complications. At the end of the conferences, an inevitable convivial phase in front of slices of bread and Nutella, an extra moment to discuss with the speaker and make a group among the participants, united by passion and curiosity. The meetings are usually held once a month according to a shared and publicized program, they concern large extemporaneous themes as contingent themes. The events, sponsored by the Municipality of Perugia, are free and open to the public and are held monthly in the great hall of the Italian Design Institute in Via Alessi n. 1 (Palazzo Ranieri di Sorbello)124. The initiative has recently received a special mention (“Certificate of Participation”) by the I.A.U. - International Astronomical Union of Paris “International Astronomical Union - IAU”), a body that unites the astronomical societies of the world, member of the International Council for Science. The certificate enhances the commitment of this initiative in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the moon landing and is signed by Bethany Downer, Jorge Rivero and by IAU president Ewine Van Dishoeck himself.

Observatory on students: partner companies, job placement and recognition of the academic career The quality of the training provided by the Institute is demonstrated indirectly by the Student Observatory, which continues to follow their academic and professional profile even after completing their studies in IID. A first figure can be found in the very high percentage of job placement of former IID students, most of whom manage to find a first job within two months of finishing their studies, often without the usual internship phase. The reason must be found in the very strong network of business contacts that IID has always cultivated, both locally and internationally. Below is a non-exhaustive review of some companies in the IID network that have collaborated with the Institute for experimental academic projects, curricular / extracurricular internships or who have contacted the Job Placement office to assign professional assignments or hire designers: Primigi, ISA Spa, Margaritelli Spa (Listone Giordano), Lamborghini Azienda Agricola, Lamborghini, Patrizia Pepe, Balmain Paris, Sterne International S.p.a. (Lorena Antoniazzi), Marilina (brand followed by: Stella McCartney), Dulcinea Perugia, Eurochocolate, Paola Mela Cashmere, Aboca, Leroy Merlin, Fabiana Filippi, Berna Italy, AST Acciai Speciali Terni Spa, Concetti Spa, Fantauzzi Arredamenti, Legnomagia, Twinkle Creations L.td, Kuche7 L.td, Wonderchef Inc., Sabatini, Grigi, Oksun, Bioservice Italia group and Global network solution Gpt127, Fara Srl, Fararicami India L.td, Gesenu Spa, Idee Partner, Showmates, Vermobil, Italproject, Due Erre Arredamenti, Salis, Stylarredo, Maglificio Dual Band, Maglificio Lattanzi, Ciam, Fisadorelli, Reschio Castle, Santoni, Hotel Fontebella Palace in Assisi, Perugia Beer. Other partners for the implementation of projects and the joint organization of seminars and cultural activities include: Umbria Region, Municipality of Umbria, National Gallery of Umbria, AIDP Italian Association of Personnel Management, Marisa Bellisario Foundation, Narnia Festival, PEFC , Il Sigaro di Freud Social Promotion Association, Italian Legal Association, National Consumers Union, Teatro di Sacco, Tritonus Choreutic Group, Umbrian Ceramics School. Observatory on students: Continuation of studies and recognition of the academic path The quality of the training provided by the Institute is demonstrated, once again indirectly, also by the acceptance of former IID students who intend to continue their post-graduate studies by engaging in first level Masters and Specialization Courses. Often the former students of the Institute have been admitted to attend courses offered by other renowned institutions, public and private, at a national level - eg. IED, Marangoni - and international - eg. Central Saint Martins, University of Arts in London. In some cases, former students have also obtained scholarships (eg. Domus Academy) and recognition of previous training credits from IID (University for Foreigners of Perugia). Finally, many former students were also admitted to attend, following a close selection, the prestigious Brunello Cucinelli’s Scuola dei Mestieri - in some cases receiving a real job offer.
