Creative Arts Academy Student Successes We have had an excellent cohort of creative students who have come to Itchen and we look to build on our students’ successes with the launch of our Creative Arts Academy. Here is collection of some of our most outstanding creative students, what they achieved during their time at Itchen and their destinations upon leaving the college. Eliza Reynolds Graphics and Photography Eliza achieved fantastic A grades in her Graphics A2 and Photography A2 and is going on to take a gap year to work in the creative industries as a Photography Assistant. Brooke Simons Performing Arts After studying at Itchen for three years, Brooke achieved two Distinction *s and a Distinction in her Performing Arts subjects. Brooke intends to follow her passion by studying at Drama school. Eddie Falvey Creative Writing Eddie found his passion for the subject at Itchen, choosing to create a poetry anthology for his Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Since leaving Itchen he has published articles and poetry and was selected during his PhD as one of twentyfour Library of Congress fellows in Washington DC.

Art & Design Fashion Shoot Textiles and Photography students combined forces in May as students took part in Itchen’s annual Art & Design Fashion Shoot. Photography teacher Tim Riggs and Textiles teacher Annabelle Shaw were on hand to co-ordinate the shoot, which featured designs made by the Textiles students throughout the year. There was a bubbly atmosphere in the Art & Design block as students prepared for their shoot. Music played in the background as models were fitted into their outfits, with make-up applied and hair styled perfectly. Downstairs in the Photography class, the room had been set up professionally with lighting, a white backdrop, and plenty of cameras. Here the Photography students got involved, taking pictures of the models whilst the designers helped to co-ordinate their models’ look. They would later import the images onto Adobe Photoshop, where the digital mastery would begin. Speaking to the students about their designs, many were thrilled with the results of their hard work. The students’ talent also caught the eye of local newspaper, The Daily Echo, who featured the Art & Design shoot in print and online. Furthermore, the shoot is an excellent opportunity for Textile and Photography students to add to their personal portfolios, which they can take to future employers or university interviews to display their work. We look forward to seeing even more collaborative opportunities arise following the launch of the Creative Arts Academy!

Zany Zebras Marwell Zoo has launched a brand new project called Zany Zebras and Itchen Sixth Form College are one of the many businesses and institutions which have rushed to join the ‘stampede’, as Marwell has dubbed the organisations. Our Life Skills students will get the chance to design and paint a zebra scuplture in a unique and creative way. Once completed, the zebras of all the organisations taking part will be scattered around Southampton city centre throughout the summer of 2016 for members of the public to enjoy.

comes to Itchen!

Rose Fudio, one of the co-ordinators of Itchen’s Zany Zebra, said, ‘participating in Marwell’s Zany Zebras project is a great opportunity for the art students as it will provide them with a well-deserved sense of pride and achievement for themselves and for Itchen College’. To begin preparing for the project, our students started work on their own small wooden zebras, on which they would plan their designs. The students also visited Marwell Zoo, where they had the chance to see Gilbert, Marwell’s own Zany Zebra. We look forward to welcoming our Zany Zebra to Itchen, and seeing the incredible work our students will put into designing and painting the sculpture.

ITCHEN OS

Celebrating the hero

Students and staff from Creative Writing, Media & Communication and Performing Arts put on their fanciest outfits to attend the annual Itchen Oscars event. The event, now in its thirteenth year, had the theme of superheroes. As a testament to this theme, not only did some students dress up as superhero characters, but the teaching staff made a short video showing them transforming into superheroes, which set the audience roaring with laughter. Along with the awards throughout the night, there were also performances by staff and student bands, as well as an introductory speech from Principal, Barry Hicks, in which he credited the outstanding work of students and the hard work of staff throughout the year.

SCARS 2015

oes of Itchen College Staff members introduced their award categories, emphasising throughout the evening how proud they were of their students’ achievements. Students too had the opportunity to give a speech following their award, with many sincere thanks given to friends, parents and staff and even one dedication to Kanye West! The night was a great success and continues to be an excellent way to recognise our students as well as, in Barry Hicks’ words, our teaching ‘superheroes’.

NEW CREATIVE ARTS FACILITIES

The Performing Arts block has been in development for over a year and the time has finally come for students to begin working in the state of the art, £1.7 million, new build. The block is yet another addition to Itchen’s facilities, with over £3.8 million being spent on redevelopment of the college facilities since 2010.

The development of the block also comes at a time when Itchen are looking to expand their creativity with the launch of the new Creative Arts Academy. The block will mainly be used by students taking Performing Arts subjects, however it has the potential to be used by students across the college and by members of the public too. The building features: • A theatre • A dance studio with sprung floor and lighting • Two Apple Mac suites running industry standard software • Two professionally equipped recording studios • A live performance music studio • Soundproof music rooms • Rehearsal rooms The launch of the Creative Arts Academy is taking place between Monday 2 November to Wednesday 4 November.
