A place to announce all types of news concerning I.T.F. Tragic loss for the I.T.F. Argentina: Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Mario Morena’s wife and two young Children. Mr. Morena lost his life in a call of duty on the 31st October 2009.

He was called upon to deal with a heavily armed suspect which resulted in the tragic loss of his life. He started his 32 year Taekwon-Do career at the age of 12 and had attained the grade of 4th Degree in the INNAE school under the guidance of Rafael Delgado.

Mr. Ung says organization of 2009 World Championships deserves highest appraisal. Upon completion of the XVI ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships ITF President, IOC Member Professor Chang Ung summarized the results of the ITF World Championship in Saint Petersburg.

Leadership behavior that is perceived to be unjust and demeaning is bully behavior. That is what 250 employees from different organizations said in a recent survey conducted by TIGERS Success Series.

But why is it that many management articles deal with how to talk to bullies rather than addressing bully behavior as inappropriate for the workplace?

The effect on a company is high turnover, unrest, low morale and potential dishonesty.

What is a Bully? Webster defines a bully as a person who hurts, frightens, threatens or tyrannizes those who are smaller or weaker. Bullying behavior is that which threatens loudly, browbeats or bulldozes others. Bullies live to win at all costs and will continue to harm others unless corrected.

We know their behaviors through litigation and high workforce turnover. The bottom line is that bullies are an expensive liability to a company when management ignores complaints about them. If you are a manager who receives a complaint against a workplace bully,

Where bullies are normally found is in leadership positions where combative-competitive behavior has been rewarded with promotion and other entitlements. These people do get a job done fast and leave low morale in their wake.

An organization transitioning from an individualistic culture to a collaborative culture that ignores management bullies will not do well in a tight labor market or competitive economy. Word about high turnover, fairness and workplace volatility turns talented employees away.

So what do you do about a bully in a key position?

1. Educate your management team.

Every manager in your organization should be well informed about the company's personnel procedures. These procedures must be followed in both formal and informal settings. Hiding behind an 'Employment at Will' clause will not necessarily indemnify you.

2. Be aware.

Be on the look out for managers who do not follow established personnel procedures.

3. Establish 360 performance reviews.

Managers who are perceived to be helpful, fair, effective, trustworthy and empathetic are generally rated quite high. Bullies are not.

4. Follow up.

Follow up poor performance ratings and complaints with a formal inquiry. Document a course of action and set measurable goals.

5. Hire right.

Hire from your values and not solely based on the resume. Hire for attitude and train for aptitude.

Bullies who refuse to change but who see the writing on the wall will voluntarily leave your organization. Others must be removed through correct procedure and thorough documentation.

The day started at 10am - all candidates had arrived at the L.T.S.I. Head Office bright and early. Vice Chairman Stuart Smith, 4th Degree and Black Belt examination panel member, explained to the candidates what the panel expects of them.

The group of nine was split into two groups,

one with the two 1st Degrees and two 1st Kups and one with five 1st Kups. Onto the floor came the two seniors to demonstrate patterns. Three patterns were executed then the second group would come onto the floor and do the same.

Onto self defence, this section consists of ten basic grabs in no order. The students worked on each attack for a few minutes until all the variations had been shown.

Next up was sparring, where all members had to execute good understanding of hand and foot defence and body movement, including good evading movements.

The panel insisted that the students make each other work and place a bit of contact into each spar as, after all, this was a Degree testing so candidates must spar like potential Black Belts. Miss Snow and Mrs. Blewitt (L.T.S.I. Instructor) tore lumps out of each other, sparring like true warriors and setting the pace that the examiners wanted to see. The execution of true technique was demonstrated by both, who proved there is NO such thing as a weaker sex in Tae Kwon Do, but they finished as good friends.

The next 30 minutes was free sparring, then moving onto two rounds of 2 verse 1. At this point, one of the older candidates asked for a break (he is 50+, so the panel allowed the short break) - Master Harry said “Fitness and age should not be an excuse”, but he would say that as he is super fit!

The exam then moved onto breaking.

This one element is the toughest of the L.T.S.I. examination, as they will get a lower mark if they cannot break with the set breaks. Tough I know, but our Senior Examiner feels it vital that all candidates must be able to break to call themselves Black Belts.

There were mixed thoughts, but all agreed that those promoted had indeed made the grade at a reasonable level.

Tae Kwon-Do Association along with Mr. Mohammad Masoud Sharifzada, III Dan 79 Kg Competitor Mr. Nazir Ahmad, II Dan 77 Kg Competitor travelled to Saint Petersburg Russia to participate in the 16th I.T.F. Tae Kwon-Do World Championships.

Departing from Kabul Airport by Pamir Airways, after transfers through Dubai and Moscow by Aeroflot (Russian Airlines) The delegation reached St. Petersburg on Friday afternoon.

At the airport the group were met by a responsible delegate of the Taekwon-do Federation of St. Petersburg who took the delegation to the Moscow Hotel.

The competition started on Wednesday 14th November 2009. In the individual Sparring section Mohammad Masoud Sharifzada 79kg won against the Republic Korea and Malaysia Competitors and finally lost to the Bulgarian Competitor. Mr. Nazir Ahmad won against his Chinese Competitor and lost against Tajikistan Competitor Sayfiddinov Daler who went on to take the title of overall champion, at the end of 16th world I.T.F. championships.

Over all this was a good event, which gave great experience for all our officials and competitors.

The 19th I.T.F. Congress took place at the Inn Hotel, St. Petersburg, Russia on October 13th 2009. The congress was attended by 82 representatives Member countries. Afghanistan was represented by Mr. Hed Mohammad Shirzai, Official Member & Representative I.T.F. for Afghanistan, Mr. Gula Jan Wafa, Mr. Mohammad, Salih Jawahery and Mr. Mohammad Maroof Sharifzada.

After one minute silence in memory of Late Gen. Choi Hong Hi the founder of Tae Kwon-Do, the current I.T.F. President Professor and Dr. Chang Ung addressed the congress. The President praised the efforts of the organizing committee for the success of the 16th world ITF Taekwon-do Championships and talked about the outcome of his meeting with the IOC President Mr. Dr. Jacques Rogge and General Association of International Sports Federation GAISF President Mr. Hein Verbruggen regarding I.T.F. issues.

There was a presentation of awards & Grand Master Degree Certificates to members promoted to 9th Dan. The Secretary General Senior Master Phap Lu made a brief report on his activities since last Congress and treasurer Mr. Kim Chol Gyu presented his report on the financial activities of I.T.F. for 2009.

The Guest of Honor of this Congress was Mrs. Choi Chun Hui, Widow of Gen. Choi Hong Hi. After Congress Prof. Dr. Chang Ung was elected by votes of 82 countries Representatives as the Next I.T.F. President for another six years. Also Asian enlarged Meeting took place at Moscow Hotel Meeting room on 12th October 2009.

Most of the Asian Member Countries were present at the meeting the key issues were discussed. The main topic discuss was regarding the venue and time for the 5th Asian I.T.F. Tae Kwon-Do Championships. It was decided that the venue of the 5th Asian championships will be in Kazakhstan in the month of April 2010. The International Seminar was organized for all umpires and masters conducted by senior grand master Rhee Ki Ha and Senior Grand master Leong Wai Men before the championships.

Three Ways To Reduce Pre-Competition Anxiety

It's common for athletes to feel nervous before a competition. Aside from the obvious discomfort it produces, such anxiety can reduce performance by interfering with concentration, increasing muscle tension, reducing fluidity of movement and even causing tremors in small muscle groups.

Fortunately, there are techniques athletes can use to control pre-competition anxiety. Here are three techniques that can be effective.

Paradoxical Intention is a 20-letter term for a simple technique. Instead of trying to fight or avoid the feelings of anxiety, tell your athletes to increase their symptoms as much as they can.

For example, if their hands are trembling, tell them to magnify the shaking until it feels like their hands will shake right off. Or, if they have butterflies in their stomach, tell them to imagine the butterflies getting so big that the flapping of their wings begins to lift the athlete up into the air.

What often happens is that the athletes begin to laugh at themselves as they observe and imagine these absurd images. Laughter helps relieve the tension, allowing the athletes to stop thinking about the pressure and the outcome of their competition so they can refocus on their game plan.

A similar technique, that has been used with a number of Olympic athletes, is to establish a "nervous time" before a competition. During this part of the pre-competition routine, the athletes attempt to get as nervous as they possibly can.

Realizing how ridiculous this really was helped him to take winning less seriously, which decreased his anxiety.

I.T.F. IN TALKS TO UNIFY membership of Prof. Chang Ung.

When Master Nobilo addressed the Congress he spoke of the long time friendships that many have developed over the years. He said these relationships had in many cases become like family. Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha, the first person promoted to IX Dan by the Founder Gen. Choi Hong Hi and current Senior Vice President often states the ITF also means International Taekwon-Do Family. Master Nobilo closed by saying we must bring our family together again.

The ITF suffered some fragmentation surrounding the passing of the Founder Gen. Choi in 2002. Since that time this unfortunate division has resulted in each group hosting separate World Championships. With the preliminary plans outlined during the initial meeting, the World Championships will again become one event for all. Many of the newer students and those coming of age now deserve this and more. The ITF remains committed to this laudable goal.

While it is understood that complex negotiations take time and can be difficult, these preliminary plans address the need for open and honest dialogue over a period of time, along with a transition period to help the process develop. Like all difficult tasks that Taekwon-Do students often face, adhering to the tenets of Taekwon-Do will empower those tasked with this all important assignment to succeed.

The International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) under the leadership of International Olympic Committee Member Prof. Chang Ung met with representatives of the ITF under the leadership of Grandmaster Tran Trieu Quan to discuss the reunification of the two groups. The meeting took place in Vienna, Austria on September 12, 2009. Those representing Prof. Chang Ung were Master Anto Nobilo, President of the European Taekwon-Do Federation, Mr. Ri Yong Son, Executive Director General and Mr. Kim Chol Gyu, Treasurer. The representatives of Grandmaster Tran were Master Willem Jacob Bos, Secretary General and Master Juan Ferrando, Vice President. The discussions were very productive and afterwards the participants were invited to dinner by Prof. Chang Ung. Master Nobilo, who also is a member of the Merger Committee for talks with the World Taekwondo Federation made a complete report to the Executive Board on October 12, 2009 at the World Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia. The report was well received by the Board. The following night, the information was presented to the Congress which was attended by 82 countries. Master Nobilo expressed his great optimism for the scheduled future talks. He advised the entire Congress that Masters Bos and Ferrando would report to their respective Board and Congress in Argentina at their next scheduled Congress meeting on November 27, 2009 during their upcoming World Championships. Pending approval to move forward by that Body, a subsequent meeting has been tentatively set for the time frame of early December of 2009. This news was warmly embraced by the

It relocated to Toronto Canada in 1972 to escape the political interference of a military dictatorship and to allow a more expansive growth as North America lies between Asia and Europe. In 1985 the headquarters was moved to Vienna Austria, which is located between the Eastern and Western Europe. It is also a politically neutral country allowing access to nations regardless of politically ideology, including those of communist or socialist countries. This helped the founder of Taekwon-Do, Gen. Choi Hong Hi realize his dream of sharing Taekwon-Do to all the people of the world.

The Board of Directors of the ITF is aware of the rumors circulating about a “reunification” plan that would merge the group of Mr. Chang Ung with the ITF and that an unsigned, unattributed announcement was sent to the TKD Times and the Totally TKD magazines who have posted it on their Websites.

The purpose of this document is to set the record straight: Following an approach by representatives of the group of Mr. Chang Ung, the ITF Board of Directors did agree that Master Juan Ferrando, Vice-President and Chair of the Welcome Committee, and Master Willem Jacob Bos, Secretary-General, could participate in a preliminary meeting in order to discover their intentions.

Last week, Grand Master Trân Triêu Quân, President of the ITF, did authorize our lawyer in Vienna to agree that the court proceedings against the group of Mr. Chang Ung would be suspended temporarily (for a period of three months).

The ITF Board of Directors has not entered into any “reunification” agreement with the group of Mr. Chang Ung. In fact, any such agreement would require approval by the ITF Congress, because it would have serious consequences for the ITF and its members and would necessitate an amendment to the ITF Constitution.

Contrary to popular belief, according to the DSM ADHD cannot be diagnosed until the age of approximately seven years. Any diagnosis before then should be taken with a grain of salt. There are many different means of controlling ADHD, the first and probably more important being discipline. Most children in today's society are not taught discipline, respect, or self-discipline. Remember when you were a kid and you wanted to scream in the restaurant, I bet your mother did not allow you for even a second.

A child that has ADHD has to learn to control the impulses they have, this is called behavioral therapy in the psychology world or self-discipline.

Teaching children this self-control can help them to identify when they are doing something impulsively, if they can learn to identify it they can learn to control it. You have to keep in mind, on the other hand, that self-control and self discipline come with age and maturity. A three year old should not be expected to have the same control as a nine year old. If you expect your three year old to behave perfectly all the time you will set them up for failure. As parents, you have to understand child development and what you should expect from your three year old verses a nine year old. Still never underestimate a child, never think they are to young to learn to scream in the restaurant, a child is never to young to learn self-discipline and a child with ADHD will benefit highly from learning it.

To help teach self-discipline to your child think about enrolling them in a sport that promotes it such as soccer, baseball, any form of martial art, or other outdoor activity. These kinds of activities help teach focus, teamwork, self-control, and will build healthy supportive relationships.

Another important means of controlling ADHD is exercise. Parents tend to believe that their children get enough exercise in PE at school or at recess.

Thus, when their child gets home they allow him/her to sit in front of the TV or play video games. On average children receive very limited exercise in their PE classes at school. For a child to be healthy they need to get between twenty to sixty minutes of exercise a day. To wear a child out they should get double that amount of exercise everyday.

If a child does get to do PE every day of the week (Monday through Friday) then they are probably receiving about forty-five minutes of boring exercises that consist of running and doing pushups.

So what can you do about this? The best means is to turn off the TV, shut off the game, sacrifice a little bit of your time and do an activity with your child or take them to one. Yes, this might cost a little money and yes it will take up your time but the benefit for your child, especially one with ADHD, will be outstanding. An hour in the park, on the tennis courts, at your local YMCA or recreation center, could be just the thing your child needs to get the right amount of exercise. At the same time you can teach your child self-discipline by enrolling them in a sport that teaches it, while exercising. Karate is probably one of the best sports to accomplish this in. Not only does it teach self control but it also gives your child a good workout that is fun at the same time. Other great sports are basketball, baseball, T-ball for young kids, soccer, and football.

There are even skateboarding classes that promote fun exercise and, if your area permits, snowboarding or skiing. You can even look into golfing, bowling, or swimming. The truth if there are lots of things you can enrol your child in and there are several sports that will do child and parent classes so you and your child can stay fit together.

Another important thing to control ADHD is proper diet. A lot of parents in the United States today do not monitor their children's sugar intake like they should and few actually have enough time to donate to cooking home cooked and healthy meals.

Unfortunately, this might be the most important thing any parent can do for their child whether he/she has ADHD or not. Studies show that a high sugar diet can lead to over energized or hyper children. When a child has ADHD this can be amplified. Therefore, carefully monitoring a child's sugar intake can help control and possibly prevent ADHD symptoms from showing in a child. At the same time a healthy diet is vital. Children who do not get enough vegetables, fruits (a natural but good sugar), protein, or fiber can have a bad reaction in their digestive system. This imbalanced diet can cause many children to act out because of a lack of nutrients in the body or can even cause headaches, stomach aces, and other ill health symptoms. If a child feels bad he/she is liable to act bad just as many adults do. Therefore, a simple change in diet can help control, prevent, and keep healthy a child with or without ADHD. So, remember ADD is a thing of the past and ADHD is something that can be easily controlled without using risky drugs. It all comes down to diet, exercise, and learning discipline of the self and of the parent.

Funnily enough, these are all things we have been told for years. If we could just get back to the old ways, then perhaps, no one will have to worry about it anymore.

The International Taekwon-Do Federation (I.T.F.) wishes to announce the 9th Junior and 4th Veterans World Championships will be held jointly in Minsk, the capital city of Belarus in September of 2010. The Junior World Championships were first held by the I.T.F. in Moscow, Russia back in July of 1993. This was 3 full years before the World TaeKwon-Do Federation (WTF) held their first Junior Championships.

The players, both boys and girls, must be between the ages of 14 and 17. They can compete in patterns, sparring, power (breaking) test, special techniques (flying breaking) and pre-arranged self defence routines.

There will be both team and individual categories.

IX VETERAN I.T.F. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010 The Veterans are for both male and female competitors.

They compete in the same categories and are further separated by ages 40 to 50, 50 to 60 and above 60 years of age. This is the 4th time Veterans world championships have been held. They were first held in Malaysia in 2004, followed by Bulgaria in 2006 and Tashkent last year. The W.T.F. still has not held this type of world championship tournament.

Competitors must qualify through their respective National Governing Body (NGB). Those interested should contact their NGB or visit the I.T.F. website www.itftkd.org for more details as they become available. I was on ‘Original-ITF’s website recently (if you don’t know the address, it’s www.original-itf.co.uk - check out their weekly news) when up popped a news article on the recent Unification meeting held between I.T.F. Vienna and I.T.F. Korea. Being an avid I.T.F. person which resides in one of the above, I chose to click on the link which took me to ‘Tae Kwon Do Times’, another great magazine.

I read and digested the article before I decided to write in and put my thoughts forward about this move. I think this is one of the best movements that could happen to our I.T.F. - unfortunately, I don’t see this being of interest to Master Choi’s I.T.F. as they are moving in another Direction. Good good luck to them, as they seem committed to the CSIM merger but, that aside, if the two I.T.F.’s can unite Master Choi’s I.T.F. will still exist but will be the smaller of the two - perhaps in time they too will choose to unite back into one body.

According to some, this is a move that had to happen.

Rumours are circulating amongst the junior grade Instructors from both sides I have met that this is for future World and Europeans Championships (now confirmed on page 16). According to some, Master Trans group has dropped the court case against I.T.F. Korea - this is a very good sign in my opinion, as we may now see light at the end of the tunnel. Whoever made the first move needs to be congratulated on trying to get the I.T.F.’s back as one body.

One final note to the seniors out there - the first step was taken by our leaders (a positive move), so now let’s see if we, as coaches and students of the art, can build bridges between local area clubs. I think this is an amazing step forward - finally, the seniors are listening.

I was so pleased to hear recently that your editor of this magazine (Chris) and his group the U.K.-L.T.S.I. made the final decision to leave the I.T.F. group they were part of in October. I have been saying since August that the situation he was in was wrong, why did he just not leave them? The action against him was, in my opinion sorry to say, unconstitutional and wrong - however, I also think that the whole situation was unhealthy, not just for the two parties but also for the I.T.F. in question in general.

I visited both their sites shortly after and found a posting for their members only which, again, made me think “Let it go”. I visited the U.K.-L.T.S.I.’s site on the same day and saw that the group had made a decision and dropped all on-line stuff regarding the whole matter. It’s not a good practice that groups throw mud at each other, warranted or not.

I have been watching your NEW website and what a fantastic site it is. The designers have added forums, video submissions, chat rooms and loads of other stuff.

The access is FREE to all I.T.F. practitioners and takes around 10 seconds to sign up.

The site is a social network / website for I.T.F. people only who can share their memories and news - if it’s good, it will also go to the magazine for publication, which is what we all needed. Have a look at the videos and galleries they have some fabulous content in them already.

The site is not in favour of any I.T.F. group what so ever, but being a practitioner of 30 years this really does deliver the goods that I wanted. It’s easy to navigate around, you can use the shout box on the front page to get videos added to the video of the week, use the micro blogger system to leave comments and do so much more.

Look at me, I am buzzing! Their last announcement on line said they are getting just under 700 visits a day, so that alone should tell you how good it is (shame the sign ups are few). Go check it out, it’s worth the little time it takes to set up.

In light of the recent announcement of the merger with ITF-C and the CISM (www.cism-milsport.org) and now I.T.F. V and I.T.F. N.K. making the move to reform as one, what are the real benefits of these mergers? Well, we all know in the case of G.M. Choi’s I.T.F. that this means I.T.F. C will function from South Korea where he will return to live in 2010. The merger is South Koreas armed forces aligning itself with G.M. Choi (or is it the other way round?). Well, many are claiming this is a good move. G.M. Choi will return back to South Korea, which in its own right is a major move.

The I.T.F.’s under both Mr. Ung and G.M. Tran are allegedly also in talks regarding joining forces - for many, this is also a great move. Master Tran’s I.T.F. has moved forward leaps and bounds and Mr. Ung’s has established itself also as a market winner, however the W.T.F. lead seems to be plagued with problems according to recent comments made by Mr. Ung, but that’s another issue that is ongoing.

Many feel that if these two merge, there will be many changes on both sides but, to be honest, these will be for the best. It has been said that should the re-unification go ahead, it will be for major international events like the Worlds or Europeans (not before time, we say).

So what will happen to the I.T.F.? Many are now saying we will be left with the two main players becoming the real I.T.F. and Master Choi’s I.T.F. becoming more of a private organisation which, over time, may be forced to change its name to the I.T.F./CISM. Both mergers have very positive results membership wise for both I.T.F. Groups. There is also a growing belief amongst the I.T.F. membership of both parties that, one day, all of the I.T.F.’s will come back together as one again, but this may be wishful thinking.

At the very least, what we may see in the future is all the I.T.F.’s agreeing to work together for international events, but we are still left with the problem of our seniors - will they forgive and forget, as many still hold onto the K.C.I.A. involvement in I.T.F. in days gone by, which may place unwarranted obstacles even nowadays.

We still hear the usual propaganda from some of the seniors making claims that I.T.F. N.K. send money back to North Korea, which is just another ploy to stop us uniting as one again. Where are all the original Grand Masters? In the one I.T.F. that has remained true to the alleged wishes of our founder, that’s where.

The membership counts here, not the seniors, as those treading the grounds many of us have done for years now are either in the middle of our careers or at the end - what we do today will affect those new students coming in now and those new Instructors making the steps up the ladder to a bright future.

War is a bad thing in any shape or form. Bitterness is like a cancer once it sets, it will eat away at the goodness and leave nothing but ill feeling. We can all make a difference by embracing new friendships with all the I.T.F. families. In essence, both the mergers have very positive outlooks for both I.T.F.’S, but the real work starts now. A wise man once said ‘The best achievements come from the smallest steps made’.

His legacy continues into the future.

If you experience a burning sensation along the spine, its quite possible you are suffering from sciatica. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, which runs from the spinal cord, through the buttocks and down the back of each leg.

Usually, sciatica is experienced by people with a prolapsed or slipped disc. A slipped disc is actually not a disc that has slipped, but has herniated allowing the softer internal material to come through to aggravate the roots of the sciatic nerve along the spinal cord. In some cases sciatica can be experienced by women during pregnancy or child-birth, and also through incorrect lifting of heavy objects, or through stress.

Sciatic symptoms can vary from mild to very painful, with a common description being that of experiencing shooting pains running down the spine, buttocks and legs. Some people also experience pins and needles, or numbness in their feet and legs, along with a general feeling of weakness.

In some cases, sciatica can be a temporary condition that eases with time, or in the case of pregnancy related sciatica, can disappear once the woman has given birth, and her body has returned to normal.

Some relief can be gained by laying on your back on the floor for 20 minutes, with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor, with your head propped up by a couple of pillows or a telephone directory.

Aromatherapy massage using lavender and chamomile essential oils can also help relieve the discomfort.

As with other back problems, a warm bath with lavender oil can be most beneficial to the sufferer, as can some old fashioned remedies such as rubbing half a lemon over the affected area, or drinking celery tea, or elderberry wine.

Keeping your bones and nerves healthy is very important if you want to prevent further bouts of sciatica. Fish bones are a great source of natural calcium. Try to choose fresh or tinned fish where you can eat up the bones too.

Magnesium may be beneficial in preventing the progression of bone loss. Try taking a supplement, adding brewers yeast, or eating foods rich in magnesium such as nuts and soyabeans.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, so you will be getting extra by eating oily fish such as mackerel, sardines and salmon, which you are eating to get the calcium from the bones as mentioned above. Vitamin D is not called the sunshine vitamin for nothing, and by far the best way of getting a dose is by taking a walk in the sunshine. Vitamin D is produced in the skin as a natural reaction to sunlight, and the body gets most of its Vitamin D in this way.

Increasing your intake of boron is beneficial. Boron is a trace mineral, which can be found in plants. Recent research has indicated that post-menopausal women who increase their intake of boron can prevent calcium loss in bones, so tucking into extra serving of organically grow fruit and root vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots, beetroot, turnips and parsnips can help keep your bones healthy. (Good quality soil is rich in boron, so make sure you buy organic wherever possible).

Sponsor a New Student in Your School FREE SPIRIT ARTICLE Taekwon-Do schools have changed substantially over the last two decades.

Differences range from class syllabus to training benefits to an expanded student age base. But what hasnʼt changed is whatʼs at the core of the martial arts experience: the teacher- student relationship. While you may be thinking about the relationship with your instructor, I am actually referring to the cycle that you as the student will undergo when you become a martial arts student.

Despite the fact that you may never open your own school or even teach professionally, the student always in some way becomes a teacher. It is this special transition that has carried the martial arts from generation to generation and millennium to millennium. Hereʼs a basic explanation...

Each new martial artist begins as a novice until he or she has extracted enough knowledge to be considered an intermediate skilled student. At the same time, and without the studentʼs awareness, each has also become a novice teacher.

You are not going to receive recognition for this title and no one may ever point it out, but you will begin to find yourself in situations where you are offering your expertise to a beginner student or a group of students. It is inevitable that a beginner student will eventually ask you for help. Not only is this flattering but it is a wonderful experience to pass along your martial arts knowledge. It is for this reason that I encourage you to sponsor a new student into the martial arts and your school. Sponsoring a new student means that you seek out one individual who you feel would benefit from the martial arts training you have received. It also means that you will take personal responsibility for that new student in two very important ways. The first is to be available if that student ever needs help with any techniques learned in class. In essence, you are taking this student under your wing. The second way is that you “oversee” their training. You do this by paying attention to training progress and class attendance. When necessary, you can be a motivational force that can help the student get back on target towards the goal of black belt.

It is always a rewarding experience to help someone with training. There is a special feeling each time that student progresses through each rank knowing that you are partly responsible for the results. This feeling that you will share is what drives us as instructors, and is why we have this school for you. I hope you will consider sponsoring a new martial artist because, in the end, we are all students who teach the martial arts.

Chris Snow, Senior Editor of our magazine, is an avid I.T.F. practitioner who holds a 5th Degree issued from Master Choi’s I.T.F. and resides in another I.T.F. Group now. He is also the senior coach of the U.K.-L.T.S.I. Those of us that already know him will know he can be very hot headed and a man that is not scared to stand up against those in senior positions, but it is a hard pill to swallow when we hear people slating him for the fact he and his group have left groups since going independent in 2001.

Those of us close to him know of his past and understand why he is so outspoken, so we asked him to allow us to print this so you can too.

Chris was born in St. Albans in a family of 5 he has four sisters Angie, Mandy, Christine and Theresa. His childhood was one that many would call a rough one, as the family unit was split at a young age when his parents were going through difficult times.

Chris spent most of his early childhood in monthly boarding schools and foster care homes, instilling a sense of not being able to trust anyone and only knowing one way to Survive, which was to stand up and be counted. Aged 9, he was sent to live in a three weekly boarding school, which was very tough and extremely disciplined according to some of the things he has told close friends.

Punishments dished out at his wing were severe to say the least, as he would board in a wing run by an ex army officer - in Chris’ words, he was an animal, as he would mentally and physically bully kids in his care (this school was later closed down due to child abuse charges).

A year later, Chris would take up Tae Kwon Do but he was not serious about it.

In 1986, he was a very tall, skinny kid so was often a target. He still recalls being a handful then and fighting whoever whenever - he says he was beaten up a few times from 11 to 15, but this did not stop him.

Unbeknown to him, things were soon to spiral out of control when, at 14, his dad would be diagnosed with cancer. He turned to Tae Kwon Do much more seriously, training harder, punishing himself (the more pain, the better). Aged 16, his dad would be given months to live which sent him over the edge, resulting in him being removed from school (which was classified as a school for troubled children) after a violent clash with another student.

In 1989, his dad passed away from the cancer, leaving him to be the only man of the family. The next 2 years would lead to violent street confrontations and getting involved in older gangs and drugs - Chris calls this his life learning period, as it was possibly his worst time.

I have known him 15 years now and, looking at the bigger picture, not many get close to him as he has this mechanism where if you do get close to him, he will push you away. He has trust issues due to being pushed from pillar to post as a kid. He has also witnessed things many would not believe which are private but disturbing to hear - forget counselling, as he would not take it.

Many that train under him will clarify he is a real task master in the schools, but he wears his heart on his sleeve. There is no hidden agenda. His approach is Aged 11, Chris recalls leaving the school from lead as you want others to follow, so seeing him on the floor training hard is a hell, which was a good day - unbeknown to common practice at his schools as he is a working coach. him, his second school would be no walk in the

park. He quickly learnt this within his first week where he would have a tough fight with a 15 year pupil, leaving him bruised and nearly expelled after throwing the lad down a flight of stairs! It was then Chris was told by a friend he must take up some kind of martial art up as he was carrying a lot of anger around due to the turbulent family life and the school was going to prove the weak had no place. The school was very disciplined, but fights were normal almost a daily occurrence. Under the surface though, there were things going on in the school which meant the kids were harder than most, as they dealt with problems with their hands and even the teachers were not off bounds.

Chris is a leader that tells the troop what is going on and hides nothing. He likes routine and discipline. His coaches always get the right to vote if things are not working out and we have been forced over the years to leave groups, as the majority has voted that situations are not what they want, yet he seems to be the person a few people like to mouth off about. In a democratically run group like the U.K.-L.T.S.I., it is the coaches that make decisions, not him.

Why is he so outspoken? Look at the history - he came up in a past of hard knocks, he will commit to seniors and be loyal but, if they cross him just once, that is the only chance they get as he will argue back.

He will have loyal followers and he has those against him, but few do not understand or see what those close to him see. As a coach, he has dedicated his life to Tae Kwon Do as, when his father passed away, the art became the one thing he could actually come alive in and relate too. There are seniors that have tried to suck him in over the years and take control of what he has been doing, only to have the breaks slammed on and be told to get lost so, yes, we back him as we know what we see is what we get.
