From 148 countries worldwide, the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitive Index ranks Oman 33 in the world. In 2012, the Sultanate produced more than US$10.66 billion in goods and services and has access to markets exceeding 1.5 billion consumers which continues to grow in size and diversity. Our successful and continuing economic growth has also significantly enhanced the Sultanate’s leisure, housing, industrial and office provisions, strengthening Oman’s ability to attract and retain talent, offering you outstanding market opportunities.

Doing Business Oman offers a business cost advantage over many countries in the region. According to the World Bank, Oman is ranked as one of the most cost-effective countries in the Middle East for doing business in terms of the combined impact of significant business cost components including labour, utilities, facility, transportation, financing costs and taxes.

Sectors Oman’s economy thrives on a combination of mature (oil and gas, manufacturing and agriculture and fisheries) and emerging (tourism, mining, logistics, food and beverage, info-tech, aquaculture, retail and R&D) sectors. International Air Transports Association data for 2012 showed a 8% rise in total arrivals of which tourism arrivals accounted for an estimated 1.8 million passenger movements. In addition, government reforms to Tourist Visas has led to a rise in short-break road touring arrivals from neighbouring countries. The total passenger traffic including transit and transfer passengers through Muscat International Airport has increased by 10% to 2,224,480 passengers at the end of September 2013. The statistics released by the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) pointed out that the number of arrival passengers increased by 9% to 3,145,068 passengers at the end of September 2013 compared to 2,877,033 passengers for the same period of 2012.

Skilled Workforce Oman has a workforce with an outstanding reputation for being highly-skilled, multilingual and diverse and has particular expertise in oil and gas, tourism, manufacturing, ICT, logistics, shipping, mining and agriculture and fisheries. Oman is home to a number of top performing universities - featuring centres of research excellence in sectors such as biomedical science, water desalination, genetics, engineering and tourism - all enjoying strong relationships with domestic and international companies.

Our non-oil exports to the world have risen from US$709 million in 2002 to US$9.33 billion in 2012 registering a Compounded Annual Growth Rate of 29.53%. But there is still great potential for Omani companies to do even better overseas. And we are particularly focused on helping domestic firms penetrate large, vibrant and fast-growing economies, particularly in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Omani products are also penetrating the mature markets of Europe and the US. Indeed, as a result of the US – Oman Free Trade Agreement, non-oil exports to the United States increased by 94.1% between 2011 and 2012.

Providing Help & Support

Trade Up Workshops

Omani companies that are new to exporting often need help getting started. Even companies that are aware of global opportunities often prefer operating within the confines of Oman’s market, where they have successfully grown their businesses.

In response to these challenges, Ithraa’s Export Directorate has created the Trade Up Seminar Program which is designed to help Omani enterprises that are new to overseas trade take the plunge, as well as assist those already trading overseas to increase sales. Through the Trade Up Series, we have tapped into the experiences of seasoned exporters to give businesses ideas and advice on how to avoid the main pitfalls and build a successful book of export business.

Ithraa’s Export Directorate is also taking a proactive approach to supporting Omani businesses’ export efforts, ensuring, for example, that Omani firms are well-represented at important trade events around the world. We understand that Omani companies require assistance expanding into foreign markets due to their own internal constraints and perceived trade barriers. Businesses have suggested that challenges with customs and compliance, distributors, intellectual property protection, financing, marketing, packaging and cultural barriers are some of the biggest barriers to becoming exporters.

In co-operation with other agencies and professionals, the Trade Up Series helps exporters with services and advice on topics that include: • • • •

Basics of the commercial transaction Market research and overseas markets Trade financing Documentation

• • • •

One of the best things Ithraa does is the ‘one-stop-shop’, where a single application by a foreign investor covers all ministries. Arafat Abu Isnaineh Executive Director, Omani Marble Co. LLC
