KIDS MAKE THE DARNDEST TOURS!

ords like milkmaid, goat herder and farmer, probably conjure up a certain image, but probably nothing like the reality of meeting Sharon Oamek, owner of Honey Creek Creamery and certified cheese maker. Sharon makes a quality goat’s milk cheese customers clamor for. And yes, she is a goat herder… extraordinaire. “There is nothing like the tang of fresh Iowa goat cheese!” Even more special is the tour she offers to groups from March to November. Sharon says her “Dairy tale existence” began when she acquired two goats back in the 1990s. At that time, she was looking for hiking companions and comic relief. Her life and career with the Federal Reserve took an unusual turn when she and her husband purchased his great grandfather’s farm, established in 1891, and moved to Iowa. Her hiking goats, two boys, moved to the farm, and a whole lot of girl goats were purchased. Then the work started in earnest. Located just ten miles from the Omaha/Council Bluffs border and set in the geological masterpiece called Loess

Hills (pronounced Luss Hills and rhymes with bus), Honey Creek Creamery is the only certified dairy in Iowa west of Des

Moines. The unique landforms of the area are found only here and in China and offer rich, chemical free alfalfa and native plants on which to feed. The result is a fresh, lively cheese with a smooth and creamy finish. You’ll have to bring your group to experience it first hand. Moving into her third year of hosting groups at her century farm, Oamek is as good with her tours as she is with her cheese. There is a large U shaped driveway to accommodate the coach. No backing up required. Tours last about an hour to an hour and a half and can accommodate groups up to 60. “Everybody always likes seeing goats,” says Oamek, “they are so much fun.” So she begins by introducing the goats. Recognizing that people who come to this type of tour are lifelong learners, and generally appreciate experiencing an operational farm, she gives them what they want. There is some fun goat trivia interspersed with opportunities to touch a goat’s soft ears, learn about the different breeds, and interact with the goats in whatever way visitors are comfortable. You can even milk a goat if you like! There is a tour of the milk parlor which is really a 1911 bunkhouse. It’s been nicely renovated of course, but that explains the old fireplace inside. Next, it’s on to the processing center where you will gain an

understanding of the cheese making process. The processor came from the Netherlands, and the bulk tank from Italy.

Did you know goat’s milk is a complete protein and contains every essential amino acid? It’s the closest thing to human milk and more beneficial to health than cows’ milk. With great love and joy, Sharon turns the milk into chevre goat cheese, with its mild flavor derived from Loess Hills vegetation and enhanced by local fresh herbs & seasonings. From mom to cheese, the process takes four days, with something being required from Oamek every day. That means her traveling days are over. But Sharon doesn’t mind. “It’s a pretty nice life” she acknowledges. From the beauty of the Loess Hills tapestry of scenic views; “I see a ski resort off to my left,” to the relationship she has with her animals, to the excitement of getting to meet the very people she would have otherwise sought out back in her traveling days, to the support of a community that shows they want her to succeed, Sharon knows she has something very special. She loves that customers like to share how they are using the cheese and offer their own ideas. She loves that sort of Yes-I-like-it-and-I-wantmore attitude. And she loves that satisfying sense of creating something that comes with each day’s efforts. When groups come to the Honey Creek Creamery Oamek is completely in her element as she shares with them the wonder of this new life she has created. The challenges of the start up are all behind her and “now it’s just the fun part!” The tour is a treat for the senses as you will see as soon as you arrive. View the extraordinary setting; enjoy the smells of the processing room, like fresh bread. Touch the goat’s soft coat or milk one if you dare. Listen to the comforting sounds of the farmstead cheese crop, and taste the creamy chevre cheese, uniquely delicious. Like other members of the Living Loess collaborative, Honey Creek Creamery offers tours the third Saturday of the month from March to November. Naturally for a coach tour you will want to call the Creamery to set up your own private tour. The cost is $5 per person with the driver and escort being free. TAKING YOUR TOURS OUTDOORS

“It’s not what you look at that matters. It’s what you see.” Those were the words of 19th-century transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. In July of 1845, Thoreau undertook a two-year odyssey in “simple living” on the shores of Walden Pond. He lived alone in the woods, a mile from the closest neighbor, and recorded his observations in a journal. He wanted to get away to discover himself and to find the time to pen a book. Along the way he also uncovered a world of wonder that spread out beneath the canopy of heaven. Fortunately for you, you don’t have to give up modern conveniences to experience the great wide open. Land, water and air are only a motorcoach tour away, and your destinations don’t have to be limited to secluded cabins in the woods. A fresh air tour gives the tour operator an opportunity to intertwine the exterior with the interior experience. You and your motorcoach group can bump along a country road on a hay wagon, zip line over a forest canopy and pluck apples straight from the orchard. But you can also dip into a fine dining experience on a restaurant terrace, indulge your taste buds at a local vintage wine tasting and explore caves, ranchlands, tall grass prairie and historic sites through guided tours and interactive presentations. And like Thoreau at Walden Pond, you and your group may discover that the wonders of a vibrant, natural world engage not just your desire to look at, but also your capacity to experience the moment through all of your senses.

Under a Sky So Blue The swath that extends up through Central Canada and south through the borderland and America’s corn belt comprises a land of marvels. From Winnipeg, on the fringes of the Canadian Prairies, to Wichita, Kansas, your motorcoach can direct you to some of North America’s most stunning vistas. A step-on guide is a great asset to narrate landmarks and historical trivia, but these noteworthy ports of call speak for themselves. Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre in Stonewall, Manitoba, offers tour operators opportunities to bring nature to groups of all sizes. An experienced interpreter will introduce your group to the internationally significant marshlands through canoe excursions, indoor interactive programs, hiking trails and snowshoe treks. In December, you can help the center count the winter resident bird species in the Christmas Bird Count. One hour north of Winnipeg are the Narcisse Snake Dens, where spring and fall you can watch the native red-sided garter snakes transit to and from their underground dens. Kearney, Nebraska is home to more than 80 percent of the world’s population of sandhill cranes, while Kansas’ Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Refuge is considered the most important shorebird migration point in the western hemisphere. Minnesota’s Itasca

State Park marks the beginning of the Mississippi River. And where better to embrace nature and the outdoors, but in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula at Tahquamenon Falls, the second largest falls east of the Mississippi, on a Twilight Walking Tour learning the history of voyageurs and trappers? Many nature destinations offer year-round and seasonal tours tailor-made to your group.

Tour and Taste Fresh air tours give you an excuse to feel like a kid again. Part of the adventure of being a kid is that “oh my gosh” reaction to experiencing something for the first time. You’ve had syrup on pancakes, but have you ever tramped in the woods and tapped a sugar maple? At the Hartman Reserve Nature Center in Cedar Falls, your group can collect sap and then watch it boil down to syrup in the Sugar Shack. Best yet, you can order a waffle with real maple syrup for lunch. Kids love to forage in the wild: blueberries, raspberries and honeysuckle. You can re-experience the thrill of fresh air foraging with a vineyard trip at North Dakota’s Red Trail Vineyards (check out their Harvest and Grape Stomp Festival) and Iowa’s Ditmars Orchard and Vineyard, where you can top off your orchard romp with fried peach or apple pie and an apple slushie. The

real bonus of sample tours is they curb your group’s snack attack when dinner is still hours away. Milwaukee offers food tours in an urban setting and Nebraska’s Arbor Day Farm invites you back in time to the estate of J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day, to pick heirloom apple varieties no longer available in grocery stores, go creek walking and assist at a commemorative tree planting. And when your group needs its sugar fix, you can take your pick of the Cupcake or Chocolate tour of Chicago.

A New Sense of Self The point of getting away is to appreciate spectacles and activities you can’t find in your own backyard. Through those experiences you realize something new about yourself. To give that self-discovery a nudge, it’s helpful to go beyond seeing to doing. “Do what?” you may be asking. Well, for starters, how about a hot air balloon ride in Stillwater, Minnesota? Or even more adventurous: A zipline trip over the Wolfe Creek Preserve in Branson, Missouri? Ziplining is one of those things you see on TV, but never thought you’d do yourself. But it’s a safe and thrilling activity that can be geared to the group trip. Pick your own gemstone on the Ouimet Canyon and

Amethyst Mine Panorama excursion in Ontario. In Illinois, witness a horse ballet at Tempel Farms, and summon ghosts in Alton. Never thought you’d experience a safari? Check out the Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari in Omaha. Participate in a Green Bay ritual, the tailgate party, at a home game in Lambeau Field and see wild horses roam a sanctuary in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Fresh air destinations will heighten your sense of wonder, while also entertaining, educating and connecting people of all ages. Many sites offer handicapped and limited mobility options, and tour packages are customizable to groups of different sizes and interests. Step-on guides bring the story right to your motorcoach, while immersive activities allow your group to actively participate in the voyage of discovery. Thoreau taught that nature helped you experience the present moment. With a fresh air tour, every present moment offers something new to see, taste, smell, touch and contemplate from a motorcoach window and at every destination between “oh my gosh” and home sweet home.

AND WHEN YOU GO…

Successful Ag Tours Start Here . . . Ag tours can be a great attraction for your group, and a very memorable experience. They are often concentrated in three major areas: farm and ag industry tours related to crop and/or livestock products; agricultural-related attractions; and festivals or fairs with agricultural themes. Travel planners need to take into special consideration a number of items beyond the “usual” tourism attraction.

An agri-tourism experience can be fun and educational for a tour group. However, be prepared:

✔ Are tour groups welcome? Ask about any ag attraction’s receptivity and ability to handle tour groups. As you know, it takes special considerations for a venue to be “group friendly.” Is there room for the coach to maneuver and park? Is there a step-on guide or someone at the facility to provide assistance and answer curious questions?

✔ We’re going where?

FARM AND FARM INDUSTRY TOURS When you’re visiting a farm, you should consider the type of farm tour. They can range from an Amish farm tour, to crops (including fruits and vegetables, such as apple orchards, etc.) to diverse types of livestock (dairy, bison, sheep, etc), and the season of the year (is it planting time?) The farm tour itself may be an important part of the agricultural enterprise or may merely be an occasional activity provided on a special-request basis. Planners can usually expect direct “hands on” experiences from their farm tours. For example, watching cows being milked, picking fresh strawberries, watching a sheep being sheared, or standing in the middle of a bison herd can make the experience come alive! Farm tours can go hand in hand with agricultural processing tours, which should continue to tell the story of how food and fiber move from the farm to the table. Both of these types of tours, when available, will most likely require a reserved time for the visit and may require tour groups to meet certain criteria (i.e. safety, security, etc.). Most importantly, drop-ins are never welcome.

SPECIAL AG TOUR STOPS Agricultural related attractions include working farms, living history farms, ethnic or cultural facilities, ag museums, and even zoos. These facilities strive to interpret different aspects of agriculture in a variety of time periods and different types of production methods, and welcome tour groups.

FESTIVALS, FAIRS, AND EVENTS WITH AGRICULTURAL THEMES You’ll find a great variety of annual and seasonal fairs and festivals of all sizes with agricultural and food themes all across the states. As a planner, you are well aware of the details and considerations that go into preparing your group for a visit – no matter the venue. We want to encourage you that visiting an ag or food industry attraction can be fun, educational and help create fond memories of their tour. And give them insights into…“so, where DOES our food come from?”

Have a good idea of what type of agri-tourism attraction you are visiting. There are many different definitions of what a “farm” is and what it offers.

✔ Get specific directions, and maybe even meet your Guide in Town. Have a good idea of the specific location of the agri-tourism attraction. Address numbers have replaced fire numbers for rural locations, but tour destinations on rural roads can be hard to find if you’re not prepared.

✔ Get advice and suggestions. Have a good idea of who to turn to for help. Local tourism officials, such as the Convention and Visitors Bureau or Chamber should know the area.

✔ Watch your step! Have a good idea of what to expect, facility-wise and weather-wise. Ag tour activities, whether on a farm, county fair or museum, require special considerations. Natural hazards, such as a sudden dip in the terrain, could cause a fall. A recent rainstorm could turn the barnyard into a mess. And all animals, tame or not, should definitely be treated with respect.

✔ Leave the germs on the farm! Have a good idea of bathroom and hand washing availability. Not all agri-tourism facilities have public restrooms.

✔ I’ll take two of those, please! Since tour group members often want to shop, have a good idea if there are products for purchases. Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Refuge | GREAT BEND Cheyenne Bottoms is the largest marsh in the interior of the United States, designated a Wetland of International Importance in 1988. Bring your groups to this complex of marshy basins in a 41,000-acre lowland – the richest wetland feeding grounds in the central flyway. The area is considered the most important shorebird migration point in the western hemisphere. Approximately 45 percent of the North American shorebird population stops at the Bottoms during spring migration. Some 320 species of birds frequent Cheyenne Bottoms, including the Bald Eagle, Whooping Crane, Peregrine Falcon, Least Tern and Piping Plover.

Today the orchard boasts 25 acres of apples and 12 acres of peach trees. They also produce cherries, plums, pears, blackberries, pumpkins, asparagus and other vegetables. The country store sells fresh apple cider and wine from its own apples. 10 – 11:30 am Witness the wonders of more than 150 species of prairie and wetland plants at the Sand Prairie Wildlife Management Area. Sand Prairie features trails, a marsh boardwalk and an elevated deck with a striking view of the wetlands. During spring, watch migrating birds on their way, in the summer marvel at the monarch butterflies busy siphoning nectar from wild flowers and when autumn happens, observe the fascinating fall migration of birds. Take a short walk or don your hiking shoes to make the one-mile trek across the prairie, and onto the boardwalk to the observation deck that overlooks the wetlands. Uncommon species include the red-shouldered hawk, and yellow rail. You’ll also see wood ducks, blue heron, robins, finches and a host of other species, including the occasional sighting of Sandhill Cranes. 11:30 – 12:30 pm The restaurant at Territory Golf Club is Coyote Moon Grille and features distinctive Minnesota lodge-style architecture. Preserve. The park currently boasts 643 acres of scenic woodlands, prairie and wetlands that include 20 old granite quarries. More than 68 species of birds and an impressive 275 varieties of trees, plants, and wildflowers have been identified at the park including cactus (yes, cactus in Minnesota). Visit one or both unique nature preserves, and be sure to wear good walking shoes, bring your binoculars, camera and field guide. 2:30 – 3:30 pm Get to know how to attract the right birds to your yard with bird products from Wild Birds Unlimited. They don’t just sell bird feeders, bird houses, bird baths and bird food. They pride themselves on providing the most accurate information and knowledge about your local birds, including hummingbirds. Backyard bird feeding is the most relaxing, fulfilling, educational and exciting hobby that anyone, young or old, can enjoy. 3:30 – 5:30 pm A visit to St. Cloud would not be complete without a visit to Munsinger / Clemens Gardens. Visitors are invited to stroll the winding paths and brick pathways as they experience this dazzling St. Cloud treasure. Immerse yourself in a truly unique botanical experience and delight in the natural beauty. Located along the Mississippi River, Munsinger’s

winding flower-bordered paths sit under tall pines, and date from 1915 when the city purchased the former site of a sawmill as a park. A true love story accompanies the Clemens Garden. Mrs. Clemens suffered from multiple sclerosis. Unable to travel because of the disease, she was able to enjoy the beauty of the gardens from her window. While most men give their wives flowers, Mr. Clemens gave his wife and the St. Cloud community the gift of this glorious public garden. Created in the tradition of the great gardens of Europe, Clemens Gardens is a spectacular display of colors, scents, sights, and sounds. There are as many as 1,100 roses and over 70 varieties bloom from June through September. The “Jenny Crane” fountain was chosen by Mrs. Clemens and was the first fountain in the Gardens. “Paint the Town Pink” 2013 n a drive through Austin, MN in February, you will see pink flags lining the streets, pink storefronts, lights, and decorations. But this isn’t just an early Valentine’s Day celebration; the city of Austin is extending breast cancer awareness into February for the second annual Paint the Town Pink. In 2012, over $62,500 in donations was raised for The Hormel Institute’s breast cancer research. Pink events include Paint the Gym Pink girls’ basketball game on February 1st, Fishing for a Cure on February 2nd, Pink Pancakes and SPAM™ breakfast at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on February 3rd, and Plunging for Pink on February 9th. February 2nd is also Paint the Rink Pink at Riverside Arena. The

Austin Bruins hockey team will be taking on the Brookings Blizzard that evening. Paint the Rink Pink started in 2011, and raised over $22,000 for the Institute’s breast cancer research that year. The community saw the great success of Paint the Rink Pink, and extended it to include the whole town to raise donations. 100% of the funds raised during Paint the Town Pink goes to The Hormel Institute, and supports their research to make progress against breast cancer. The Hormel Institute is a world-renowned medical research center that focuses on cancer prevention and control. A special effort is put forth with this event to raise money for breast cancer research. Spreading awareness and prevention is equally important with this citywide fundraiser. The whole community embraces the fundraiser, and businesses all over town participate by holding contests, raffles, having special discounts, and in some cases, serving pink food! At the end of the week there will be a Gala concert at the Historic Paramount Theatre, where the amount raised will be publicly announced. Today, it offers a “hands on” look at St. Joe’s colorful history. Stroll down Old Main Street, climb aboard a steam engine and visit the little house where Jesse James was shot and killed. The museum is currently working on fossils ranging in age from 28 to 73 million years old. Tour participants will be allowed time for some supervised collecting at certain sites during the tour, but since all sites are current scientific studies, no personal collecting is allowed. All collections belong to the museum and will be used to further the scientific studies being completed there.

istory comes to life at historic Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park. Take a trip back to 1875 and the home of General George and Libbie Custer on Cavalry Square, where their staff still entertains guests with stories of Libbie, the General, and the time they spent in Dakota Territory. The hills above Fort Abraham Lincoln provide a great view of the Missouri River Valley with blockhouses standing guard over both the fort and an ancient Mandan Village. On-A-Slant Village, dating back to the 1500s, features six rebuilt earthlodges with exhibits and guided tours. The park’s Visitor Center houses the nation’s best display of Mandan artifacts and history, along with items of interest on Lewis and Clark and General Custer. (While your group is in the area, they could take a ride on the beautiful Missouri River aboard the Lewis and Clark Riverboat to round out the day).

North Dakota: Legendary

The new Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site actually consists of two sites telling the story of the Cold War years in North Dakota. The Oscar-Zero Missile Alert Facility and the November-33 Launch Facility are the last remnants of the 321st Missile Wing spread over a 6,500-squaremile area around the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Visitors to Oscar-Zero will be given a guided tour of topside facilities and will learn how the facility managers, security forces, maintenance teams, and cooks lived their daily lives at the MAF.

Bonanzaville | FARGO Groups love to stroll the streets of Pioneer Village within Bonanzaville, the region’s largest historical attraction; located on 12 acres of land with 43 buildings, more than 400,000 artifacts and millions of memories. Groups have an option to take a tram tour, which includes a 20-minute trip around the village with a costumed docent who will give information about each building and additional background information about area history. It’s a great way to start your visit to Bonanzaville! Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery | RIVERDALE A visitor center at the hatchery complete with five 400 gallon aquariums will give you the pleasure of viewing the fishes of North Dakota in their environment. With over 10,000 visitors annually, the dedicated staff and volunteers at the hatchery are happy to answer any questions while you enjoy a hatchery tour. The visitor center is open Memorial Day through Labor Day from 8:00 a.m to 3:30 p.m. The hatchery is open year around and admission is free. Group tours are available with prior reservations and are handicapped accessible.

tour south dakota outdoors… Garden of Eden Cave Tour | HOT SPRINGS Wind Cave National Park is the fourth longest cave in the world and one of the oldest national parks. Choose from a variety of tours for your group. The Garden of Eden Tour is their least strenuous tour. It is a wonderful sample of Wind Cave. Small amounts of all of the beautiful cave formations – boxwork, cave popcorn, and flowstone – are seen along this ¼-mile trail, designed for people with limited time or abilities. It enters and leaves the cave by elevator with 150 steps along the tour route. Above ground are 28,295 acres of prairie and ponderosa pine forest with plentiful displays of bison, elk, antelope, mule, prairie dogs and other wildlife.

Wild Horse Sanctuary | HOT SPRINGS Visit the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary. It’s like nothing else you’ve toured before. Come see large herds of wild horses running free across 11,000 acres. See the Crazy Horse movie set (replica of Fort Robinson) and learn about Native American and pioneer history. All private tours are in special Sanctuary vehicles and available by reservation only, hosted by an experienced tour professional and provides guests with the ultimate wild horse viewing experience. National Grasslands Visitor Center

The only visitor center for the 20 National Grasslands in the United States. The NGVC also represents Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie south of Chicago. Visitors to the NGVC can receive a free passport stamp and poster, watch the 25-minute “America’s National Grasslands” video, and browse the Exhibit Room and sales area. Additionally, upon completion of the Junior Ranger program (for any age) visitors receive a free National Grasslands pin. Forest Service staff is available to answer your group’s questions on various topics: from the Dust Bowl to current recovery efforts of the highly endangered black-footed ferret. The NGVC offers tour groups an opportunity to explore a relatively unknown aspect of our Nation’s history from the Homesteading Act of 1862 to present-day conservation of the multiple-use, natural resources of the National Grasslands.
