HISTORY OF LIBRARY 1978-1998
Indian Trails Library Celebrates its 60th Anniversary The Growing Years: 1978-1998 The years between 1978-1998 were ones of growth as the library adapted to changing technology needs, two library expansions and a population increase as the world entered the age of the internet. Having outgrown the space at 850 Jenkins Ct., the library acquired land at 355 Schoenbeck Rd., to build a 30,000 square foot building. The new library opened February 23, 1981 and was immediately followed by a 30 percent increase in items checked out. In 1978, the Foundation for the Indian Trails Library was created to raise funds for the library. The 1980s saw other changes in library services, when Indian Trails Library, working with two other libraries and Roosevelt University, began broadcasting 20 hours of

programs each week on cable television. With federal grant funds, a 12 interview series with Illinois authors was added, that included Gene Wolfe, Sara Paretsky and Jack Fuller. The Friends of the Library celebrated their 10th anniversary in 1986, having grown from 12 to 50 volunteers. Through their used book sales they purchased a typewriter, printing press, display case, cataloging records computer, puppet theatre and the library’s first personal computer. In 1989 the library joined 29 other libraries to provide Night Owl Service, which was a free reference phone service to answer questions to members after library hours.

In 1991, members could dial into the library’s card catalog from home computers. Three years later the library joined the web and added two public computers. As the library entered the last decade of the 20th century, there was a need again for expansion as the library found itself short on space for both its collection and the ever-changing service needs of the community. The collection had grown by 138% and the demand for more technology and programming space lead the library to a referendum that passed in 1995, paving the way for a 14,500 square foot addition. The expansion saw a new computer lab, a larger dividable programming area and rooms for group study and silent reading. 1988 first in-library use personal computer
