MY LIBRARY
THREE GENERATIONS
Discover The Launch Pad
THREE GENERATIONS
DISCOVER THE LAUNCH PAD When Kennedy Gerber was in kindergarten she told her grandmother, Pam Dorband, she wanted to make a model of the solar system. Off to the library they went to check out books on how to make the solar system before heading back to Grandma and Grandpa Dorband’s house for quality craft time. Eight years later Kennedy and her grandmother are still coming to the library, and bringing along Kennedy’s mom, Deann Gerber. They aren’t creating models of the solar system, but are indulging their creativity in the library’s new makerspace, The Launch Pad. It was Kennedy who introduced her mother and grandmother to The Launch Pad after they saw the etched glasses she made for friends. “I love working in The Launch Pad,” Kennedy said, “I want to try the embroidery machine and 3D printer next.” Deann, a longtime scrapbooker, is looking forward to learning about the archiving station in the Digital Media Lab. Recently, Kennedy and Deann were working with the Silhouette cutter to make gifts for Kennedy’s classmates at St. Mary’s School, while Pam sat nearby. “The best part of being here is watching my daughter and granddaughter,” she said proudly, smiling at Kennedy. Although Pam says she is the least crafty of the three - who knows, with a little help from her granddaughter, she might be making her own gifts soon! The Foundation for the Indian Trails Library is excited to be raising funds to start a Tech Collection of makerspace equipment that could be checked out by members to use at home. Please consider making a donation to this new venture online at www.itpld.org and click Donate or by check, payable to the Indian Trails Library Foundation. Gifts of $100 and more are recognized as Founders of the collection. 2

FOUNDATION
MEET OUR NEWEST FOUNDATION DIRECTORS! The Foundation is thrilled to welcome Kalsoom Saleem and Christine Melone to its Board of Directors. Both Kalsoom and Christine come with a wealth of experience and a passion to give back to the community.
Kalsoom Saleem 1. Why I joined the foundation I’m an avid reader, and all my life I have made use of any library I had access to. I brought my three sons to this library, not only to share the magic of books but also to participate in programming the library has offered. Our library is a wonderful place for our children and community to visit (not only for books) but also to get to know each other. I joined the foundation to further the role our library can play bringing forth original and educational programs and promoting more interaction within the community. 2. The book I think everyone should read Blindness by Jose Saramago really stood out for me. The book not only explores how ordinary people can stoop to unethical and immoral levels when assured of going unnoticed, but also talks of the struggle of resisting temptation. It is a book that forces one to think and question oneself too.
Christine Melone 1. Why I joined the foundation I love the library and want to advocate for the needs of the library that will benefit the community. The library is the “heart” of the community and I want to be part of its constant growth and impact. It will be exciting to be part of the opportunities and resources for all community members. 2. The book I think everyone should read Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle is a compelling exploration of the human spirit and thought-provoking scenarios that make you examine your own values, perceptions, assumptions and integrity. The book draws you into many issues of humanity to consider and ponder. 3. My favorite quote “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.” - Helen Keller
3. My favorite quote Being from the medical background, my favorite quote is by Jonas Salk: "I have had dreams and I have had nightmares, but I have conquered my nightmares because of my dreams."
BE A PART OF US! Do you love your library and want a great cause to volunteer for? Consider joining the Foundation for the Indian Trails Public Library District Board of Directors. We seek energetic people with ideas and a can-do attitude to join our fun group. Contact Susan Dennison, sdennison@itpld.org or 847.279.2222 to learn more.
