Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create. Roy T. Bennett, author
WISHING YOU HEALTH & RESILIENCE
O
ur staff were preparing for our summer library adventure, excited about this year’s theme Dig Deeper: Read, Discover, Investigate. Then, Covid-19 appeared. The library closed to the public on March 14, and our staff went home to work remotely based on the recommendation of officials to increase social distancing. To slow the spread of the virus, a mandate requiring everyone to stay-at-home and for the closure of nonessential businesses went into effect March 21. As I write this, the order will continue through May 31. While we can’t control what has happened, we can direct our energy and creativity to find ways to adapt to the new reality. For the library, it means finding different ways to connect with you, our members, to provide outstanding library services.
Since March, staff have expanded virtual library services, including current electronic resources, such as e-books, e-audiobooks, streaming services and databases. In addition we added a Live Chat feature to our website, one-on-one appointments via phone and online registration to our popular youth reading programs. This is a time of uncertainty. We hear the thoughts that you share with us on our social media channels and appreciate your input. We are witness to moments of great hope as we see our communities rally to help others. It is also a time of opportunity as we explore different and unique ways to bring services and programs to you. Challenge ultimately builds a path to strength and this makes us who we are. Warmest regards, Brian D. Shepard, Executive Director

MEMBER STORY
GEORGIA SAMPRAS SEWS MEMORIES
L
ast Christmas Georgia Sampras wanted to do something unique for daughters Dina and Jenny. It was twenty years since Georgia’s husband Chris (and the girls’ father) passed away. For years, the girls kept the blanket he used as a way of remembering their father. The blanket was now threadbare and ripped but Georgia had an idea. Why not make two pillows from the blanket for the girls? The first thing Georgia had to do though, was learn to sew. She signed up for the sewing certification in the Launch Pad and then brought her material in for ideas. “I was so frustrated,” she admits. “My mother, who used to sew my clothing, is probably laughing at me right now.” Launch Pad staff helped Georgia figure out how to make the pillows, although they “didn’t hover over me. They were willing to help and advise, but they wouldn’t do it for me. This helped me learn,” she says. Along the way, Georgia documented the entire project, taking photos of her process. She purchased fabric with Disney characters to complete the pillows because Chris often watched

Disney movies with Dina and Jenny. On Christmas morning she filmed her daughters opening their gifts. “Dina cried and Jenny gave me a huge hug,” Georgia says, “They remember their dad and these pillows were a way for them to keep a piece of him in their hearts.” “The library has so much to offer,” Georgia says. She is a fan of the Launch Pad where she can explore her creativity. Who knows what she’ll make next?
