MY LIBRARY
DIRECTOR’S COLUMN THE LONGEST TABLE GOING FINE-FREE
O
n October 22, Indian Trails Library officially became a fine-free library, which means overdue material will no longer accrue fines. We made the decision to go fine-free for several reasons: 1 Fines create a barrier to providing equitable service to all our members. 2 Even a small fine can be burdensome for someone facing financial challenges. 3 Our move to a new catalog within a consortium (CCS) was the perfect time to initiate our fine-free policy. 4 Removing fines can increase circulation of material. Historically, libraries charged fines for overdue materials to insure materials came back on time. The primary reason for this was when library collections were small, it was important to get books back so they were available for others. Over time the use of fines shifted to providing revenue streams for the institutions.

Two questions libraries get when they go fine-free are (1) Are there still due dates? and (2) Don’t fines teach everyone about responsibility? To question one, yes, there are still due dates and studies have shown that most people understand and honor due dates. As for question two - the mission of a public library is to encourage literacy, exploration of ideas and knowledge and we want to remove the barriers that get in the way of making this happen. By eliminating overdue fines, our greatest hope is that more people will discover all the incredible opportunities at Indian Trails Library. ONE BOOK ONE COMMUNITY ABOUT THE BOOK
All programs held in the Lake or Cook Rooms. Ages vary.
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a peculiar child with few of the usual demigod gifts. Despised by her parents and sisters, she turns to the world of mortals for companionship and discovers she possesses the power of witchcraft — able to transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.
2020
Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island. Over the centuries she hones her craft and crosses paths with many famous mythic figures, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus. But there are dangers for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from or the mortals she has come to love. Circe is short-listed for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and is currently being adapted for a series with HBO Max.
