FOUNDATION DIRECTOR SPOTLIGHT

C

athy Burns and Rose Johnson spent over 20 years working for Youth Services at the Indian Trails Library. After retiring in 2014, they decided to join the Foundation to continue their passion for books. With a background in teaching 4th and 5th grade, Cathy related well to the students who needed homework help at the library. She recalls working in the dedicated children’s area in the original building and working with the library’s earliest computers. Cathy is an avid reader; she crochets and grows vegetables. Prior to the pandemic, she visited a local classroom once a week and talked with students about reading. “I feel a bond with the library,” she says, “the people, the books, everything.” Rose worked in special education prior to working at the library. She and her husband are very involved in the Wheeling community. Her house is described as the Kool-Aid House - the neighborhood “hub” for children. During the pandemic, she and her husband instituted a jigsaw puzzle exchange outside her house that grew from 12 to 50 puzzles. Rose, who says she joined the Foundation to keep in touch with members, is in charge of the Foundation book sales.

Cathy Burns

Cathy and Rose worked together on the reference desk Monday and Tuesday nights for years. They did book talks and assemblies for the summer reading program. They would adapt stories and insert jokes and riddles into them. The kids loved it. Both Cathy and Rose love the relationship they have had with students, now grown, who remember their story times and come up to them to share their memories.
