As I sit down to write this column, we have been open at our newly renovated library for a little over two weeks. The renovation project was the result of years of planning, the approval of a referendum in 2011, more planning and a year of construction that required a move to a temporary location. Literally thousands of hours went into the planning and execution of this project with our ultimate goal of creating a space that would serve our community both now and into the future. So how did we do? As a library we have many statistical measures we track to see how our current usage compares to past experience. While it has only been a short period of time, the early indications are exciting. In the two weeks we have been open:
Well worth the wait! It is a wonderful adventure to use and explore the new library. It truly is a place for people of all ages to come together and to continue their lifelong learning of new and old things. Thank you for the vision and courage to renovate. -Cheri
• Over 21,000 visitors came through our doors, which represents a 50% increase in overall attendance at the library.

• Over 27,000 items were checked out from the library averaging more than 200 items/hour.
It is so beautiful it took my breath away! The new additional zone spaces give every age group their own space to work or read in. I have watched the library grow since 1963, and I think this is best yet! Job well done! - Bruce
• 450 new library cards were given out, which is higher than any single month. But statistical measures don’t tell the full story of our community’s reaction to the new library. We asked for feedback and here is a sampling of what we heard from you: It was spectacular! It was spacious and calm upstairs and full energy downstairs! I loved it and so did my kids! - Sofia
And this is only the beginning. In June, we kick off our annual Summer Reading Program themed “Reading By Design” that fits perfectly with all of the services your new library has to offer. Looking ahead, we’ll be rolling out new services and ramping up our programs again so watch future newsletters for details. Our desire is to continue to find ways to inspire individuals, engage our communities and enrich the lives of all who call ITPLD their library.
I absolutely LOVE the renovation! Not only has the library modernized in appearance but also the library has expanded the services it offers to patrons. Even though it felt like the library had been closed forever, the investment was definitely worth it! - Gurleen

Sing, Sing a Song With Laura Doherty 11 am-12 pm Most appropriate for children ages 2-8 with a caregiver. Drop in for Minecraft gaming in the Middle Ground. The two gaming stations will be reserved for Minecraft play and members with their own login can play on the Mac computers. Mr. Freeze Cryogenics Show 1-2 pm Grades K-8. Your summer is about to get super cool! Mr. Freeze uses liquid nitrogen to create spectacular and surprising effects. I Will Always Write Back by Martin Ganda and Caitlin Alifirenka* Tuesday, August 22, 1-2 pm It started as an assignment. Everyone in Caitlin's class wrote to an unknown student somewhere in a distant place. Martin was lucky to even receive a pen-pal letter. There were only ten letters, and fifty kids in his class. But he was the top student, so he got the first one. If you have teaching or tutoring experience or would be interested in assisting students in our ESL Lab, please apply. Practice Your English–Speaking Skills With a Tutor July 10-August 25, times and days vary Get one-on-one help with your English in this 7-week tutoring session. Staff will pair ESL students and tutors, and set the tutoring days and times. All tutoring will take place in the library. Registration begins June 15 at the Adult Desk.
