DIRECTOR'S COLUMN D
ecember marks our eighth month in our new library and the end of a whirlwind year for our library district. This year will long be remembered as an achievement for our library district as we celebrated the opening of our new building and welcomed a record number of visitors from our community. We’ve enjoyed hearing your thoughts about the new building and expanded services as many of you took the time to write reviews, post on social media or fill out comment cards. However, as wonderful as our new library is, we also know it’s time to turn to the future and begin answering the question “what’s next?” In September we began a new strategic planning process, and as part of this work, launched an online community survey in October to assess library usage and member needs. As I write this column we are beginning to analyze the responses we received to help us create the strategic plan that will take us through 2020. One of the interesting things about going through a strategic planning process, is that it challenges us to assess what we do and the way we do things. Often what emerges is the knowledge that we can find a better way to provide a service or in some cases, accept that it is time to sunset a service or program that is no longer needed. Every library has limited resources and it can be a balancing act determining where to put those resources. This is why a strategic plan is so critical to the library–it enables us to determine how to use our resources and where your tax dollars are best utilized. In January of 2018, staff will present the new strategic plan to the library board of trustees for approval. After final approval by the board, the new strategic plan will be posted on the library’s website for your information. Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to our survey; your input is vital to our planning. I look forward to sharing the results of our survey and the new strategic plan in the future. We remain committed to finding ways to build services and provide the resources that will benefit all who call ITPLD their library.
