MY LIBRARY
1-ON-1
Appointments
FROM THE DIRECTOR
Over the past year, we have continued to make strides in serving our community. A few highlights include:
• Our Summer Library Adventure program saw a 141% increase in program completions.
• Members brightened up our community by
taking on the challenge to draw and share photos during the Summer Community Chalk Project.
• We continue to expand the availability of our
programming to include a hybrid option where participants can select to attend in-person or via Zoom.
• The Foundation provided quality member
experiences by underwriting the Green Lake Park Storywalk, hosting the springtime Drive-In Bingo Event and sponsoring the increasingly popular monthly Pop-Up Book Sales.
Lastly, I want to share that the Foundation is excited to partner with Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove and Buffalo Grove Bank & Trust to fill the new Little Free Library located in Green Lake Park. This unique little library is dedicated to Pat Johannes, a Rotarian who championed literacy.

BOOK COFFEE HAPPY
O
n March 12, 2020, a local resident Jenny Share had last visited the main library. 92 days later, after experiencing the Covid-19 pandemic, Jenny shared her thoughts on her social media channels and in a post on her blog Book Coffee Happy. A self-proclaimed book nerd, Jenny was delighted about the library drive-up window reopening in June 2020. “What a wonderfully convenient and safe way to get books into readers’ hands,” said Jenny. ITPLD was tagged on Facebook and the rest is history. Who was this enthusiastic library cardholder? We wanted to meet her and learn more about blogging, her favorite books, and her love of the library. Over many months, we learned of Jenny’s deep love of reading. Eventually, we asked if she would become a connector to our community. After reopening our main library building to visitors in July of 2020, Jenny posted selfies in our lobby wearing a brightly colored tie-dye mask. Jenny became our “library hero” spokesperson in a campaign to encourage everyone visiting the library to wear a mask.

Growing up in the area, Jenny visited ITPLD often. As a child, she remembers sitting in the reading circle, an architectural structure that no longer exists today. Jenny and her daughter continued the tradition enjoying puppet shows, reading in the stacks and eating lunch in the "blue chairs." After my son was born, we would visit the temporary library location and explore for hours. The renovation project was a big deal, and when it was finished, we were so excited. It was a dramatic change.”
Indian Trails Public Library District | November • December 2021
Jenny started her blog in 2018—quietly at first, building it up, and then she debuted it in September of that year. “With each year, I just love it more and more. I don’t have a writer’s
“
We would go to the library every day. Located deep in the basement of the Cullom-Davis Library at Bradley University. Jenny recently visited her beloved study area when she returned to campus with friends from college. All the memories, books and the silence.
“
We are at that time of year where we can reflect on the events of the past year and look forward to the hope a new year will bring. It’s also a time of thankfulness as we gather with friends and family. Over the past year, our library has weathered many ups and downs as we continue to pivot while the pandemic impacts every aspect of our lives. What has remained true is the tremendous support we receive from our community and for that I am thankful.
MEMBER PROFILE
background, but I was a teacher for 14 years and I’ve always loved creative writing classes. I have been reading blogs for so many years. I follow all kinds of blogs, nutrition blogs and food blogs. I feel like for me, this is something I can share. Reading is amazing and reading is wonderful. Even if you’re not a reader, there’s a book out there for you. It’s my job to find you a book.”
Serene mountains, snowy mountains, stranded on a mountain brought a huge surprise. During a pandemic family road trip to the Smokey Mountains, Jenny shared her experience with her blog readers. She, and her husband and kids enjoyed family time in a mountain cabin for 8 days. Then, a big blizzard barreled through the area and forced them to stay for 9 days. Time to write a blog post titled, I Was Stuck On a Mountain in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. On crafting her blog, Jenny says, “I’ll throw in little tidbits about my life, or I’ll write in the way that I speak.” Following the trip, back home safe and sound, Jenny noticed that she was getting notifications after notification on her cellular
phone. She went to her blog page, and thousands of views were popping up and subscribers on Jenny’s little blog skyrocketed. Google had featured Jenny’s blog post on the their homepage. She received many new followers/subscribers and many new social media followers. Jenny shared a book in that blog post, One by One by Ruth Ware, a title she never ended up reading during the adventure with her family. In Jenny’s words, “It has been fun and definitely a huge highlight of my blogging journey thus far.”
Today, when you make a purchase of a book–you think is this worth the hardcover? Do I want the paperback? Jenny believes that you should never make reading feel like a chore. “When I was a child, my parents used books as rewards. They would take me to a bookstore and tell me that I could choose any book in the entire store. I will never forget that magical feeling of walking into a bookstore and knowing that I could choose any book I wanted! To this day, I still get that magical feeling each time I walk into a bookstore or library.” “When you make a purchase of a book, in the back of your mind you have to think will I like it, is this worth the hardcover? When you walk into the library, there it is! If I don’t like it, I’ll return it. Sometimes, I just walk the stacks. I love the new releases. I walk the aisles and look at book covers and book spines, picking things up, reading the back. There is no I want my blog posts to feel like someone is just talking to me like a friend. pressure. If you don’t like a book after 10 pages, you just bring it back to the library. It’s a huge draw.” Jenny suggests for anybody who considers themselves a nonreader, “Don’t buy the books. Come to your library and explore. If you’re starting from scratch, this is the place to do it. You can ask the librarians to order a book for you.”
What was your favorite book as a child? Teen? Adult? “The Babysitters Club series by Ann M. Martin. I devoured every single book in the series, and my daughter is reading them now. It has been so special for me to watch her connect with these wonderful characters and immerse herself into these storylines like I once did.” There’s just something about the feel of a book in my handsturning the page, the smell of a book. “My favorite projects in high school were assigned readings.“ Jenny created a binder for class to study Catcher in The Rye by J.D. Salinger. I made it just for me. I took the characters, the settings and the plot. I thought about what was going to happen, my predictions in there, and my notes. Nobody collected it as an assignment. It was just for me. I was just so infatuated with the idea of books, characters and stories.” What’s Jenny’s top pick? The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. “It’s such a beautifully written book in every single way.” “Reading is my favorite hobby in the world. It always has been and always will be.” Visit Jenny at: www.bookcoffeehappy.com

But Claude is not like his brothers. When he grows up, Claude says, he wants to be a girl. Rosie and Penn aren’t panicked at first. Kids go through phases, after all, and make-believe is fun. But soon the entire family is keeping Claude’s secret. Frankel’s novel is about revelations, transformations, fairy tales and family. Change is always hard and miraculous and hard again; parenting is always a leap into the unknown with crossed fingers and full hearts; children grow but not always according to plan. Enjoy refreshments and register for OBOC programs. Free copies of the book will be distributed while supplies last. NR
