MEET & GREET OUR STAFF

Time flies when you’re having fun. In this issue, we are featuring one of our Launch Pad staff members, Michelle. We recently caught up with her to learn more about her artistry and library journey.

2001

Michelle’s dad reads to her in the Preschool Nook of the Indian Trails Public Library District.

What is your fondest memory of Indian Trails Library?

When I was little, I frequently visited this library. However, my family moved to the East Coast and I didn’t return to the library for about 20 years. When I started working here, I didn’t recognize the place. I only remembered when I found this website printout that a family member had saved from around 2001.

How did you get interested in working at the library?

In college, I loved learning laser cutting, 3D printing, machine embroidery, etc. but couldn’t picture a job using all of them. During a media lab visit, the Launch Pad Manager, Liz, suggested I apply to work here.

You’ve recently been a part of a big project that was just featured in The New Yorker magazine. Can you tell us a little more? My dad was a video game producer in the 90s and 2000s. With video games being such a big part of culture today, there’s a growing need to preserve them and how they were made. The Video Game History Foundation (gamehistory.org) offered to help archive important documents my dad saved. Thanks to the library’s resources, we were able to digitize these insightful artifacts.

2022

Your talent was applauded in a recent anime contest. Where did you learn how to illustrate? I attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where I learned a lot. This enabled me to create a realistic rendering of the diving Pokemon, named Cramorant, for a card art contest. I am honored to have been among the top selected illustrations out of 10,830 entries.

What is your favorite type of project to work on with members in the Launch Pad? It’s always heartwarming to help members create personalized gifts. The Launch Pad makes it easy to learn something new and bring ideas to life.

Start planning your next visit to the Launch Pad at itpld.info/launchpad.

Kick off this year’s One Book, One Community (OBOC) by getting your copy of The Bohemians by Jasmin Darznik. In this novel of the glittering and gritty Jazz Age, a young aspiring photographer named Dorothea Lange arrives in San Francisco in 1918. As a newcomer— and a naïve one at that—Dorothea is grateful for the fast friendship of Caroline Lee, a vivacious, straighttalking Chinese American with a complicated past, who introduces Dorothea to Monkey Block, an artists’ colony and the bohemian heart of the city. Dazzled by Caroline and her friends, Dorothea is catapulted into a heady new world of freedom, art and politics. She also falls in love with the brilliant but troubled painter Maynard Dixon. As Dorothea sheds her innocence, her purpose is awakened and she grows into the artist whose iconic Depression-era “Migrant Mother” photograph broke the hearts and opened the eyes of a nation.

Register for OBOC programs and enjoy music and refreshments. Free copies of the book will be distributed while supplies last. OBOC is a partnership with Cook Memorial Library and Vernon Area Library. NR
