Indian Trails Library Celebrates its 60th Anniversary Into the Information Age: 1998-2018

W

ith a newly expanded renovation possible after a successful referendum four years prior, the building increased to 44,900 square feet in 1999. The additional space offered a self-checkout station, a newspaper/magazine area, computer lab, larger dividable programming room and group study room. The next several years saw an expansion in library services including digital resources, adding of Wi-Fi and the library’s first website. Between 2005-2009 the library saw two smaller remodels adding a front room for new materials

and a space for community displays. A new bookmobile was purchased through funds provided by the library’s foundation and other community donations. The larger bookmobile could hold twice as many items and included foreign language materials and DVDs. The library continued to embrace digital trends by replacing print collections with online database subscriptions and offering downloadable e-books. The library also began expanding its programs and services to reflect the diverse population it served, including hosting District 214’s Read to Learn program for ESL students. The Wheeling Garden Club and Youth Services Department launched the Giving Garden to teach children about gardening and giving back to the community. In 2010, the Prospect Heights Branch location opened in a shopping center at Palatine and Milwaukee. Due to high demand, the Branch relocated to its current location at 99 E. Palatine Rd. in 2012. In 2013, a partnership was formed with the Prospect Heights Police Department and the Branch staff to support a series of summer trips for kids to area museums, bike rides and recreational activities.

the way for the 2016-17 renovation and expansion of the location at 355 Schoenbeck Rd., adding almost 15,000 square feet and a complete interior remodel. During the yearlong renovation, the main library relocated to a 14,000 square-foot storefront at 70 W. Dundee Rd., Buffalo Grove. On April 10, 2017 the newly renovated library reopened to rave reviews with many new features including The Launch Pad makerspace, study rooms, middle school area, driveup window and a quiet reading room dedicated to the woman who started it all - Muriel Lischett. On October 7, the library will celebrate its 60th anniversary with special treats for our community. We fondly remember our past and look forward to the future as we continue to build generations of readers.

2000 • Online Book Club emails you 2-3 chapters of a book daily. 2002 • The library’s catalog is accessible online outside the library. 2003 • E-books are available through netLibrary service. • Library hours expanded to 73 a week. 2004-2006 • Library bookmobile expands service to year round. • Downloadable e-books become available for e-reader devices. 2008 • RFID system installed, which allows members' books to be checked in instantaneously. 2009-2011 • Up to three songs per week can be downloaded onto MP3 players. 2017 • Launch Pad and Media Labs open. 2018 • Digital and Maker Services Department formed.
