Introduction

Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivalsCarnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals - the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, The Grape Escapade to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, Germany, UK, USA, UAE, etc.

Article by: Team ItsGoa Images by: Milroy Goes

filmmaker

From a childhood fascination with films to achieving recognition on global platforms, Milroy Goes has emerged as an accomplished filmmaker with a unique approach to storytelling. With 16 years of experience, Milroy's journey is a testament to determination, creativity, and resilience. Each film he directs reflects his meticulous attention to detail and passion for impactful narratives, leaving a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.

The Early Inspiration: From DVDs to Filmmaking Milroy's journey began during his school holidays when he would binge-watch movies at his aunt’s home. However, it was his best friend Ashley’s DVD collection that opened a new world for him. Each DVD set included behind-the-scenes footage, which

Milroy watched with great interest after finishing the movie. These clips gave him an early glimpse into filmmaking processes and ignited his curiosity about what happens off-camera.

Later, the introduction of IFFI (International Film Festival of India) in Goa further fueled his passion. Attending filmmaking workshops led by industry experts expanded his knowledge and strengthened his resolve to pursue a career in film direction. For Milroy, these experiences were stepping stones that shaped his understanding of cinema and storytelling.

Cinematic Influences: A World Beyond Boundaries

While many filmmakers have a particular mentor or industry that shapes their style, Milroy Goes takes a different approach. He intentionally avoids following any specific filmmaker to prevent unintentional imitation. Instead, his inspiration comes from world cinema. IFFI introduced him to films from diverse cultures, languages, and styles—a practice he continues to embrace. By exploring films beyond Bollywood and Hollywood, Milroy broadens his horizons, allowing him to develop a storytelling approach that is uniquely his own.

A Journey Across Genres: Versatile and DetailOriented

Milroy embarked on his filmmaking journey in 2008, and over the past 16 years, he has directed films across multiple genres. His first short film, an Action Crime Thriller, marked the beginning of his exploration into diverse storytelling styles. Since then, he has directed feature films in Drama, Horror, and Crime Thriller genres, showcasing his ability to adapt and excel in each.

Currently, Milroy is preparing for an exciting new project—a Romantic Comedy set in the UK. Drawing inspiration from his personal experiences and time spent with family and mentors, this script is a reflection of his thoughtful approach to character creation and storytelling. His directorial style focuses on precise lighting, well-composed scenes, and close collaboration with the cinematographer and actors to bring authenticity to every frame.

Filmography and Achievements: Welcome Millions

Among Milroy’s notable works, his feature film "Welcome Millions" stands out as a defining achievement. Inspired by a real-life scam artist he personally encountered, the story resonated with a British producer who funded the project. The film gained international recognition, first premiering in the USA before making its way to Amazon Prime, Airtel Xstream/Tata Play/VI Movies/Watcho.

A major milestone in Milroy’s career was when "Welcome Millions" qualified for the 91st Academy Awards. While it did not secure an Oscar nomination, the film garnered immense attention and earned Milroy widespread acclaim. In addition to this achievement, he has received several recognition awards for his contributions to the film industry.Welcome Millions” original sound track was done by Michael Learns to Rock. The song “It’s Gonna Make Sense”. And the end credit track by famous Bollywood Indian-Canadian singer Shashaa Tirupati.

The Creative Process: From Script to Screen

Milroy’s creative process is deeply rooted in personal connections and experiences. He often finds inspiration in the stories he hears or the moments he witnesses. For instance, the concept for his upcoming Romantic Comedy emerged during a visit to the UK. Spending time with his sister and mentor, Anthony Coombs-Humphreys, Milroy drew on their humorous personalities and unforgettable adventures in Brighton. Combined with a thoughtprovoking sermon he heard in Los Angeles about misunderstandings, the story took shape, blending humor, relatability, and heartfelt moments.

To ensure authenticity in his films, Milroy creates comprehensive character bibles. He outlines every detail of his characters, from their birth year to their zodiac signs. Although these elements may not appear in the script, they provide actors with the foundation for method acting. This meticulous approach helps actors deliver performances that resonate deeply with the audience.

Leadership on Set: Calm Amid Challenges

For Milroy, the role of a director extends far beyond storytelling—it is about leading a team with calm and clarity. Directing a film often involves dealing with sensitive situations, unexpected conflicts, and logistical hurdles. Milroy’s calm demeanour and problem-solving mindset allow him to navigate these challenges with grace. He believes that staying focused on the end goal—completing the film—is key to overcoming setbacks.

On the set of "Welcome Millions", Milroy faced significant challenges, including conflicts with an actor and the tragic passing of Bollywood veteran Razak Khan. Despite these hurdles, Milroy’s leadership and the collective support of the cast and crew ensured that the project reached completion. These experiences taught him the importance of resilience, adaptability, and maintaining a clear vision.

After a quick walk around Beverly Hills

Milroy believes that every film carries its own message. Whether exploring themes of greed, relationships, or cultural experiences, his stories are designed to leave the audience with a sense of satisfaction and purpose. In "Welcome Millions", for instance, he delves into the consequences of greed and the allure of quick riches, creating a subjectdriven narrative that resonates with viewers.

For Milroy, impactful storytelling is about creating films that not only entertain but also provoke thought and inspire change.

A Vision for the Future: Hollywood Dreams and Beyond

Milroy’s ambitions are as inspiring as his achievements. After overcoming challenges with being overweight, losing the excess weight, and staying fit, he set clear goals and began turning his dreams into reality. Now based in Los Angeles, Milroy has worked alongside Hollywood actors and filmmakers, directed ad films, and contributed to TV productions under Cpics.TV as the Head of Studio Operations. His prestigious membership as a Voting Member of the Television Academy for the Emmys

While these dreams are ambitious, his track record of perseverance and passion suggests they are well within reach. He even envisions working with iconic actors like Rowan Atkinson, a dream that underscores his belief that “written words come true.”

Conclusion: A Never-Ending Journey of Creativity

Milroy Goes’s journey is a remarkable blend of inspiration, creativity, and resilience. From watching behind-the-scenes DVDs as a child to directing films recognised on international platforms, he has carved a unique path in the world of cinema. As he strives to bring his visions to life—whether through Romantic Comedies, TV series, or Hollywood collaborations—Milroy remains grounded in his belief that hard work, faith, and determination can achieve anything. For this visionary filmmaker, the journey is just beginning, and the best is yet to come.

The Journey to Modelling: From the Corporate World to Fashion

Although Yonella’s career in modeling was never part of her initial plans, life has a way of leading us toward unexpected opportunities. After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Saraswat Vidyalaya's Sridora Caculo College of Commerce and Management Studies, Yonella initially aimed to delve into the corporate world. However, as fate would have it, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic marked a turning point in her life.

In 2019, Yonella faced personal struggles, including mental health challenges and discouraging words from someone who doubted her abilities. These difficulties served as a catalyst for change, pushing her to find a creative outlet. It wasn’t long before she began pursuing modelling, a decision sparked by a friend of her mother’s sharing a post from Ninoshka India. What started as a simple application soon turned into a flourishing career that would change her life.

A Rising Star in the Fashion Industry

Yonella’s modelling career quickly gained momentum. She shot to fame when she reached the top 7 in Femina Miss India Goa, a moment she will always treasure. As a woman of colour, Yonella faced unique challenges, especially in balancing two cultures. Yet, it was the support and love she received from her community that propelled her forward, giving her the strength to embrace her identity.

In addition to her beauty pageant success, Yonella has graced advertisements for prestigious brands such as Bacardi, Tuborg, Tira Beauty, Tailor and Circus, and John Jacobs. These opportunities have allowed her to work alongside renowned personalities in the fashion and advertising industries. As if that wasn’t enough, she has walked in shows like India Beach Fashion Week, Urvashi Kaur with COMO, and Triumph Lingerie, leaving her mark on the industry with every stride.

Personal Style: A Blend of Comfort and Chic

While Yonella’s rise in the fashion world is a testament to her beauty and dedication, her personal style stands out as an extension of her multifaceted identity. Drawing inspiration from her love of comfort and chic simplicity, her style includes relaxed crop tops, baggy tees, and denim. Muted tones like beige, black, and brown dominate her wardrobe, with slip dresses and mini dresses as her go-to choices.

As a true 90s kid with a touch of Gen Z, Yonella’s style is a unique fusion of nostalgia and modernity. Fashion icons like Rihanna and Hailey Bieber, along with her mother’s influence, shape her wardrobe, but Yonella has always emphasised that comfort is key to her personal fashion philosophy. After all, as she says, "What's the point of dressing well if you're not comfortable?"

Cultural Identity and Embracing Diversity

Coming from two distinct cultural backgrounds— Indian and African—has profoundly shaped Yonella’s perspective on life and modelling. Raised in India, Yonella was instilled with a mindset that embraces imperfections and differences. On the other hand, her African heritage has blessed her with the beauty and strength of two worlds. She believes that her dual identity has equipped her with a unique outlook, allowing her to navigate challenges with confidence and pride.

Fashion Trends and Evolving Style

As someone who is constantly evolving her style, Yonella is particularly excited about the return of plaids and stripes, as well as the trend of wearing dresses over pants. Another style she’s looking

forward to experimenting with is utility jackets paired with modern glamour. For Yonella, fashion is not just about looking good—it’s about expressing herself through clothing while staying true to her comfort-driven philosophy.

Social media, particularly platforms like Instagram, has played a major role in shaping her career. By following the right pages and engaging with her audience, Yonella has been able to build her brand and connect with a wider audience. Through her social media presence, she continues to share her journey, both personal and professional, and inspire others to embrace their uniqueness.

Overcoming Challenges in the Modelling Industry

Like many others in the modelling industry, Yonella has encountered challenges along the way. From the long hours and sleepless nights to the pressure of maintaining physical standards, the modelling world is undeniably demanding. Yet, Yonella remains grounded by her family, friends, and her home in Goa. Spending time by the sea, swimming, hiking, or simply relaxing with loved ones helps her recharge and stay focused on her goals.

Mental health has always been a priority for Yonella. She maintains a journal to reflect on her experiences, and when things get tough, she turns to the gym or the sea to reset. Her resilience is evident in how she handles the industry’s pressures while remaining true to herself.

Memorable Moments and Milestones

One of Yonella’s most memorable shoots was with Aakash Bhatia for Bacardi. Shot overnight in Goa, this was one of her biggest gigs. What made the experience truly special was the creative freedom that Aakash Bhatia allowed his team, giving Yonella the opportunity to bring her true personality to the screen.

The camaraderie of the cast and crew made it an unforgettable experience, further cementing her belief that modelling is more than just posing for the camera—it’s about telling a story and making genuine connections.

A Dream for the Future: Opening an Animal Shelter

While her modelling career continues to soar, Yonella harbours a deep passion for animal welfare. Her dream is to open an animal shelter that provides a safe haven for stray and neglected animals. For now, she and her mother feed local dogs every night, but Yonella hopes that one day, she will be able to turn this dream into a reality.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for Ten Years

"Poems on the Move" at SAF 2024 transformed festival shuttle rides into poetic journeys, featuring Goan poets creating intimate moments of

Poets read out poetry in near-guerilla-like fashion in festival shuttles, and regaled co-passengers as part of ‘Poems on the Move’ at the recently concluded Serendipity Arts Festival 2024.

Poetry hitched a ride along at the recently concluded Serendipity Arts Festival 2024, with young poets armed with poetry, who stepped onboard festival shuttles travelling between festival venues and regaled passengers with quick, unexpected bursts of poems.

Conceived as part of the festival's special programming under the 'Poems on the Move' project, curated by Goa-based writer, poet Salil Chaturvedi and Delhi-based artist duo Jiten Thukral & Sumir Tagra, the special guerilla-styled poetry project, was aimed at creating unique, transient spaces where individuals come together in unexpected moments of wonder, reshaping how we perceive both poetry and the urban journey, while also driving home the significance of a pause in fastpaced urban environments.

"Poetry brings a pause. Even if it's bad poetry, it brings a (sense of) pause. Because you need to be in a certain mood or stop and engage with it. As you can see in the hustle and bustle, you do need to stop and reflect," said Chaturvedi, an acclaimed poet himself.

According to Thukral, through 'Poems on the Move' "we wanted the most mundane journey of sitting in

a cab to be the most memorable, in a way that these 5 minutes of your life can be seen as slowing down."

Goan-origin poets, namely Asavari Gurav, Deepali Sutar, Mamata Verlekar, and Rochelle D'Silva joined forces with Rochelle Potkar, Anamika Joshi and Darshan Singh Grewal, for the special project.

And the reaction from their audiences, copassengers in festival shuttles, was enjoyable for both the poet and the passengers.

"People thoroughly enjoyed listening to the poems and appreciated the intimate nature of the conversation. Some even shared their poems with me, making this exchange a truly special and memorable experience," Verlekar said.

"There have been instances where someone has sat in (the shuttle) and didn’t want to listen to poetry. But, then at the end of it, they didn't want to leave. So, I've had people who have taken that journey to Nagalli and come back to Old GMC Complex with me to listen to more poetry," said D'Silva.

'Poems on the Move' presented an intimate and experimental poetic encounter that turned a quintessentially mundane urban experience—a cab ride—into a journey of poetic discovery and the presence of local Goan poets who knew the lay of the land helped, says co-curator Tagra.

"Most of our poets are local; they know Goa; they know how to navigate," he concluded

From Family Albums to Future Archives: A Goan Odyssey at SAF 2024

The "Archive of Potential (Goan) Futures" at SAF 2024 explored Goa’s cultural heritage and future through storytelling, photography, and community collaborations, blending preservation with contemporary dialogue.

The future is always rooted in the present.

The Archive of Potential (Goan) Futures, an exhibition featured under the curated segment, ‘Goa Familia’, as part of the recently concluded 9th edition of the Serendipity Arts Festival (SAF) 2024, did just that.

The latest edition of the ‘Goa Familia’ project aimed to document the present state of Goa in archive format for posterity.

Curated by Lina Vincent and Akshay Mahajan, the project took inspiration from Jacques Derrida's ‘Archive Fever’, balancing the act of preserving Goa’s cultural fabric while fostering public dialogue to envision possible futures, making a case for instance, through two contrasting photography exhibitions, one which focused on heritage homes and the other which humorously critiqued the rise in the trend of ‘second homes’ in Goa.

“We wanted to focus on creating ‘archives of now’, and more than 20 individuals and collectives came together as a part of ‘Archive of Potential (Goan) Futures’, creating a variegated compilation of stories and images from across Goa. Someone will look back 10 years from now at this wonderful body of material that came together. We have shifted our focus, looking at a very contemporary space,” said Vincent.

Complementing their curatorial effort is a collaboration with the Museum of Christian Art (MoCA) for a special exhibition during the XVIII Exposition of the Sacred Relics of St Francis Xavier. “In true ‘Goa Familia’ style, we gathered personal stories, objects and memories from the community. The sub-exhibition at MoCA at the Church of Santa Monica, Old Goa, open for public viewing from November 21, 2024, to January 9, 2025, has already sparked deep connections and we're thrilled to have extended Serendipity Arts Festival 2024 to a new location at MoCA,” Vincent said.  www.itsgoa.com

According to Mahajan, the 2024 edition of ‘Goa Familia’ explored various aspects, like ace photographer Ulka Chauhan’s book ‘The Memory Keepers and Future Seekers’, which documents heritage homes in Goa, focusing on the people who inhabit them and not just the architecture.

Chauhan’s exhibition was juxtaposed with Niharika Chauhan’s ‘Second Home’, which critiques the phenomenon of second homes in Goa, highlighting how the state has become a hotspot for investment properties and holiday homes.

“We’ve created an immersive space where the past, present, and future intersect—through innovative displays, storytelling, and interactive elements. It’s a

celebration of Goa’s living archive—an exploration of where we’ve been, who we are, and where we might go,” said Mahajan.

In its earlier editions, ‘Goa Familia’ collaborated with SAF to document Goa’s history through family archives and oral stories, leading to a series of exhibitions. The first, in 2019, was titled ‘Goa Familia’.

After a pandemic break, the curation focused on the stories of Panaji, ‘Families Are Like Rivers,’ in 2022. The exhibition, ‘Let The Sound Linger’ (2023), explored music and theatre as core elements of Goan identity.
