In a few weeks from now, Goa will witness the onset of the monsoon season. For the people of Goa, the monsoons hold a special place in their hearts. With the rain clouds rolling in, the locals gear up to face the downpours in their own resourceful ways.
Stocking up on essential food items becomes a priority, ensuring that families have an ample supply of groceries to last through the wet months.
Another essential item on the checklist of Goans during monsoons is rain gear. Umbrellas and raincoats become the fashion statements of the season, protecting the denizens from the torrential rains. From vibrant, patterned umbrellas to trendy raincoats, the streets of Goa become a colourful tapestry as people embrace the monsoon showers with a touch of style. It is a heart-warming sight to witness the locals carry on with their daily routines, undeterred by the weather, all thanks to their trusty rain gear.
As the monsoons grace the shores of Goa, there is another buzz of excitement in the air - the beginning of a new academic year. Parents and students eagerly line up for admissions, ready to embark on a new educational journey. The process of enrolling children into schools is not merely a routine task; it is a significant milestone in the lives of both parents and students. The anticipation and hope that surround this time are palpable, as students prepare to step into a new grade and embrace fresh challenges.
Goa's education system is renowned for its quality and holistic approach. The beginning of a new academic year brings forth new opportunities for growth, learning, and exploration. Students in Goa eagerly anticipate reuniting with their friends, meeting new teachers, and diving into the sea of knowledge that awaits them.
As the rain-soaked streets of Goa come alive with the hustle and bustle of monsoon preparations and the excitement of a new academic year, we are reminded once again of the beauty and charm that the monsoons bring, connecting us to our roots and uniting us as a community. Let us revel in the joys and embrace the magic of Goa's monsoons, while also honouring the pursuit of knowledge and growth as another academic year begins.
Happy monsoons, Goa!

Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivals - Carnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals - the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, UK, USA, etc. www.itsgoa.com

Akshay Parvatkar is a talented filmmaker from Goa who has garnered acclaim for his work. Born in the village of Karmali, he spent his formative years in Porvorim. After completing his education in Electronics and Telecommunication at the Goa College of Engineering, Akshay worked at the Museum of Goa in Pilerne under the guidance of Dr. Subodh Kerkar. His time at the museum exposed him to various forms of art and pushed him to pursue filmmaking more seriously.
Seeking to pursue his passion further, Akshay moved to Pune to study screenwriting at the prestigious Film & Television Institute of India (FTII). Following his graduation, he relocated to Mumbai in January 2019 to pursue a full-fledged career in filmmaking. He started his journey in Mumbai by working as a researcher and writer at Bharatbala Pictures, where he had the opportunity to assist acclaimed ad filmmaker and director Bharatbala. During his two-year tenure, Akshay worked on multiple projects, including feature films, web series, and a short docu-d rama called "Grandmother's School" for the series "Virtual Bharat." He also served as an assistant director on another film titled "Ramnami" for Virtual Bharat.
Over the years, Akshay has worked on diverse projects, both for production houses and independently. He has written and directed short films that have been showcased at numerous film festivals worldwide. One of his notable works, "The First Wedding," received critical acclaim and won several accolades, including the prestigious Filmfare award. Currently, Akshay is in the final stages of production for his latest directorial project, "Hanging By A Thread," which will soon embark on its festival run. Additionally, he has contributed as a writer and assistant in various documentaries, exploring topics such as transgender clinics and housing for children seeking cancer treatment in Mumbai.
Reflecting on his journey, Akshay emphasises his desire to do something unconventional and different. Initially drawn to photography, he started an Instagram page called "camera_wala" and eventually found his way into filmmaking when he was asked to shoot a film for an interdepartment competition during his engineering studies. He learned the craft through trial and error, watching YouTube videos, and actively engaging in the process of shooting and editing.
Akshay's exposure to different art forms while working at the Museum of Goa further fuelled his passion for storytelling, leading him to pursue screenwriting at FTII.
Throughout his career, Akshay has been fortunate to collaborate with renowned filmmakers, writers, and producers, including Tigmanshu Dhulia, Bharatbala, Pubali Chowdhury, Tushar Paranjape, Umesh Kulkarni, Shazia Iqbal and Mrunmayee Lagoo. But he believes that the real joy of being a writer-director is in meeting people from different walks of life - the grandmothers of Fangane, the transgender doctors, the resilient young cancer patients and their parents. He also acknowledges the emerging wave of young Goan filmmakers who are making significant contributions to the industry and expressing their artistic vision. Akshay believes that Goa holds a wealth of untold stories, and he aspires to put the state on the world map by sharing narratives about Goan people, culture, history, and traditions. However, he also aims to expand his horizons beyond Goa and delve into diverse subjects and experiences through his films.
Apart from his filmmaking endeavours, Akshay has a strong interest in education. He recognises that Goa can be a conservative society, and he envisions creating a space where young individuals can explore various possibilities for their future. Akshay aims to inspire and guide children by showcasing different avenues and encouraging them to dream big. He believes that the internet has opened up countless opportunities for learning and growth, and he encourages aspiring individuals to stay authentic, true to themselves, and to never settle for mediocrity.
Akshay Parvatkar's journey from Goa to Mumbai as a filmmaker has been characterised by passion, dedication, and a commitment to storytelling. With his unique perspective, he aims to tell compelling stories that resonate with audiences and make a positive impact. He emphasises the importance of perseverance, practical thinking, and creating opportunities for oneself.Akshay's ultimate goal is to take Goan stories to every corner of the world and if possible, inspire and help youngsters in achieving their goals.
