Introduction

Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivalsCarnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals - the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, The Grape Escapade to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, Germany, UK, USA, UAE, etc.

Ever since independence, women in India have come a long way and have risen to great heights in society through education and hard work. A state which boasts one of the highest literacy rates in the country, Goa too has produced several women achievers who have carved their paths to success through sheer dedication and grit.

One among these many successful women is Akshaya Shivkumar, an international diplomat who currently serves as head of the Institutional Strategy program at the Universal Postal Union (a United Nations agency specialising in the post and logistics sector) in Switzerland. She holds over 13 years of experience in governance and strategy and has served at several esteemed organisations like the World Bank. Through the course of her career, she has collaborated with several high-level leaders, managed strategy development processes, and cultivated a strong network of professional relationships globally. She has garnered acclaim for her contributions in all organisations she has served at and is known for her adeptness in engaging stakeholders, exhibiting leadership amidst ambiguity, and devising inventive approaches to achieve outcomes.

He is also the Founder-Director of the UGC Centre for Latin-American and International Studies. Her mother, Dr. (Mrs.) Kamal Shivkumar is an esteemed academician. She holds a PhD in Indian philosophy and has done a lot of research on the Indian diaspora.

Being individuals deeply rooted in academia, Akshaya's parents had a strong influence on her life and career choices. “My parents are my greatest inspiration, my strongest supporters, and the true reason for my success. My father being in the field of Latin American and International Studies, and my mother being an academician really shaped my worldview and my ambitions,” says Akshaya. “We always had a home environment filled with visits from many ambassadors, diplomats, professors, musicians and artists from different parts of the world, with our living room bustling with discussions on world politics. In 2022, Akshaya received an offer from the Universal Postal Union (UPU) to lead its Institutional Strategy Program, a team she had previously served on as a strategy expert. Things She Misses About Goa While Working Abroad

Akshaya says that while working abroad, she misses almost everything Goa has to offer - the refreshing air, the beautiful sunshine, the swaying coconut palm trees, the delicious food and the Konkani language. More than anything, she misses the kindness and genuine warmth of people in Goa. She considers herself very fortunate to call Goa home and to be Goan. “Wherever I have been to till date, be it at the UN General Assembly or any of the 35 countries I have visited, I have always told people that I am a Goan and I am an Indian, and I am very proud of that”, she says. “And I think that representing India in these kinds of fora is an immense honour for me” she adds.

Words of Advice

Akshaya strongly encourages people, especially young women to join the field of international relations and diplomacy. She advises individuals aspiring to work in organizations like the UN to keep themselves aware of global affairs. She suggests that such individuals should read quality journals and newspapers from both, India and abroad. In addition to awareness, she says that it is important to take tangible steps towards achieving one’s goals. "This can be done by participating in various talks, seminars, and conferences as a first step, and by using social media and the power of the internet to expose oneself to diverse opinions and varying global perspectives,” she says. She also emphasizes the importance of having a strong commitment to societal betterment. She says that there are times when employees at organizations of the UN may have to work for long hours. "This requires a genuine commitment to endure the demands of the role and contribute meaningfully to the organization's mission," says Akshaya.

In the serene coastal state of Goa, known for its picturesque landscapes and cultural tapestry, Sabrina Da Costa has emerged as a beacon of artistic expression. Her canvas is the world, and her medium, a blend of passion, resilience, and vibrancy that reflects the essence of her tropical roots. This is the story of Sabrina, a Goan artist whose journey into art is a narrative of self-discovery, determination, and the relentless pursuit of creative fulfilment.

The Awakening of an Artist

Sabrina's romance with art was not a decision; it was a destiny that unfolded naturally. As a child, creativity was her refuge and expression—a way to release energy and encapsulate her emotions. It was a rough patch at the age of twenty that brought art back into her life, this time with the intent of healing and exploration. With a push from her mother, Sabrina found solace in the discipline and detail that art required, and soon, her hobby flourished into a calling. Posting her work on Instagram as a tentative step led to the sale of her first painting in 2018, marking the beginning of her professional journey as an artist.

The Goan Muse

Goa, with its melange of colours and natural beauty, serves as an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Sabrina. The azure waves and the golden sands are more than just picturesque—they are muses that dance on her canvases. Though portraits and landscapes are part of her repertoire, it is the fluidity and organic nature of waves that resonate with her the most, coming to her as naturally as the tide.

Mediums and Methodologies

Sabrina's artistic odyssey has seen her traverse through various mediums, from acrylics to charcoal and oil paints, but it is mixed media that truly captivates her. Her disdain for rules fuels her love for the unpredictable outcomes of throwing paint and watching the chaos forge its own path of beauty. This rebellion against conformity is evident in her work, a testament to her free-spirited approach to art.

The Artistic Process: Chaos to Clarity

Sabrina's process is an alchemy of spontaneity and structure. Her initial forays on the canvas are bold and unrestrained, allowing the paint to set the narrative. As the artwork takes shape, she harnesses her discipline to refine the details, marrying her initial freedom with the meticulous strokes that define her subjects. Her process is a dance between control and abandon, resulting in pieces that are both vibrant and nuanced.

Beyond the Canvas

Sabrina's creative endeavours extend beyond the easel. She is the founder of Beyond Paints, an initiative that organises workshops and 'paint and sip' events, demystifying art and encouraging others to explore their creativity. Her role as an art teacher and her experiences in art therapy reflect her commitment to spreading the joy of art.

The Commerce of Creativity

Sabrina's art is not confined to her studio; it travels across oceans to adorn walls in Australia, the US, and the UK. Her Instagram serves as her gallery, where admirers of her work can commission pieces that range from intimate pet portraits to grand couple paintings.

A Global Canvas

Currently completing her Master's in Lisbon, Sabrina's pursuit of knowledge in the art market is a leap towards understanding the business of art. Her relocation to Italy to work as an assistant curator has opened new doors, allowing her to immerse herself in the grandeur of the European art scene. In her current role, Sabrina is involved in the management of the gallery, including curating and gallery assurance. She is working towards the opening of a new exhibition called the Chianciano Biennale 2024 - 8th edition. Part of her work also includes flying to London to work with Gagliardi gallery. The current museum she is working for is the “Chianciano Art Museum“ and 13 other galleries associated with the same company.

Artistic Community and Exhibitions

Despite not breaking into Goa's art community initially, Sabrina's journey has been punctuated by exhibitions and national recognition. Her scholarship from the Milan Art Institute was a pivotal point that enabled her to grasp the enormity of the art industry.

The Future: A Spectrum of Possibilities Sabrina envisions a future where her art transcends traditional forms. Her interest in audio-visual mediums and aspirations to delve into art direction and dealing promise a dynamic evolution of her artistic identity.

A Message of Hope and Persistence

For those aspiring to carve a niche in the vast world of art, Sabrina offers words of encouragement. Her advice is to trust in one's ability to navigate the journey of creation, to embrace the inevitable stumbles, and to believe in the power of patience and perseverance.

Sabrina Da Costa stands as a testament to the transformative power of art. Her story is not merely about the creation of art but about the art of creation itself. From the vibrant shores of Goa to the historic galleries of Italy, Sabrina's journey is a continuous canvas, eternally unfinished, always waiting for the next stroke of brilliance. Her life—rich in colour, bold in strokes, and detailed in textures—is her masterpiece, and it continues to inspire and captivate those who encounter it.

In the ever-evolving tapestry of digital content creation, few stories resonate as authentically and as powerfully as that of Kimberly Lobo, the digital creator and influencer who has turned the idyllic vistas of Goa into a canvas for storytelling and brand building. It's a tale that began amidst the stillness of lockdown, blooming into a journey that encapsulates both the struggle and splendour of influencing.

The Unintended Beginning

Kimberly's foray into the digital realm was not premeditated but a serendipitous pivot during a time of global uncertainty. The lockdown not only brought life to a standstill but also saw Kimberly lose her job, a setback that inadvertently set her on a new path. With time on her hands and a desire to explore, she began to unearth Goa's hidden jewels— waterfalls, dams, and uncharted locales—and shared these discoveries through her lens on Instagram. Her content struck a chord with both Goans and outsiders, sparking a conversation that transcended geographical boundaries. Her first paid collaboration with Himalaya was a turning point, validating her efforts and catalysing her full-time commitment to digital content creation.

Crafting a Narrative

Kimberly's creative process is a delicate balance of spontaneity and strategy. While her heart lies in creating content for the sheer joy of it, she acknowledges the commercial aspect that fuels her career. Her ability to maintain class and simplicity in her brand-related work sets her apart in an industry often criticised for its excesses. Kimberly's content is devoid of cliches, resonating with brands that value elegance and authenticity.

Pivotal Collaborations

Reflecting on her career, Kimberly regards her collaboration with Reliance as a watershed moment. It not only elevated her profile but also underscored her credibility within the influencer community. This partnership was soon followed by her receiving the Offbeat Influencer Award in the Lifestyle Category in Goa, a milestone that underscored her impact and

reach within the lifestyle sector.

The Goan Influence

Despite the challenges of being an influencer in a relatively small state like Goa, with fewer big-brand opportunities compared to metros, Kimberly's content remains deeply intertwined with the state's culture and topography. She navigates these challenges with tenacity and an eye for the unconventional, finding ways to monetise her passion while planning a potential move to Mumbai to further her career.

Challenges Transformed into Opportunities

The influencer industry is rife with the temptation of barter collaborations, but Kimberly has strategically positioned herself to convert these into paid opportunities. Her firm stance on being fairly compensated has not only elevated her brand but has also set a precedent for the industry in Goa, advocating for the value of creative labour.

Alongside content creation, she manages social media for brands, offers public relations expertise, and specialises in selling and leasing real estate, assisting clients in finding their ideal rentals and more. This diversified portfolio is a testament to her business acumen and her belief in the power of financial independence and stability.

The Power of Collaboration

For Kimberly, collaborations are the lifeblood of her work, each one bringing a unique opportunity to showcase her creativity. Her partnership with Reliance remains a highlight, having provided her with a formidable platform to showcase her talent and open doors to new opportunities.

Trends and Timelessness

In a digital era where trends come and go with dizzying speed, Kimberly opts for a timeless approach, engaging with trends that align with her brand’s ethos and rejecting those that don’t resonate with her vision. This selective engagement ensures her content remains authentic and relevant.

Government Onboarding

Kimberly Lobo is at the forefront of an innovative government initiative in Goa, India, the first state to recognise and leverage the power of social media influencers for public good. Empaneled by the government, Kimberly is among the select group tasked with amplifying awareness of various government schemes and programs. This effort, typically hindered by limited reach, is now set to impact a broader audience through Kimberly's significant online presence, with the potential to benefit countless Goans and potentially extend its influence to the broader Indian populace in the future.

She takes great pride in this responsibility and is eager to embark on this path of civic engagement and information dissemination. The government's decision to bring influencers into the fold was officiated by CM Sawant, who handed over contracts and encouraged the creation of content in the local language, Konkani, to foster a deeper connection with the audience. As an empaneled influencer, Kimberly Lobo, along with her peers, is set to navigate this novel intersection of governance and digital influence.

Looking ahead, Kimberly sets her sights on growth and diversification. She aspires to collaborate with major Indian and international brands, broadening her horizon and elevating the quality of her content.

Alyssa Vaz

Alyssa Vaz, a self-taught artist from Cortalim, Goa, creates deeply personal portraits and photographs, sharing her passion through paint parties and aiming to expand her artistic reach globally.

In the lush green backdrop of Cortalim, Goa, Alyssa Vaz, a masterful portrait artist and photographer, is crafting a narrative that goes beyond the canvas. Her journey is a symphony of self-taught brilliance, where every stroke and snapshot tells a tale of passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of art in its purest form.

Artistic Beginnings

Alyssa's tryst with art began in the simplicity of childhood, where pencils and crafts filled the hours where most children her age were glued to cartoon shows. For Alyssa, the likes of M.A.D. and Art Attack were the windows to a world of endless creativity. It was here, in the quiet aftermath of school days and within the freedom of vacations, that her hands began to move in rhythm with her imagination. A moment that stands out in her memory is when she sketched her father's aunt in the tranquillity of an afternoon nap, a first portrait that laid the foundation for her future in artistry.

The Portrait’s Call

Initially, her canvas was graced only with pencil sketches until a friend’s request opened the doors to portrait painting. The challenge turned into a cascade of requests for wedding portraits, family commemorations, and beloved pets, marking her transition from hobbyist to professional.

Influences and Inspirations

Alyssa’s artistic influences are as diverse as they are profound. Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest serve as her modern-day muses, while the hyper-realistic portraits of Marco Grassi ignited the spark to elevate her craft during her biotechnology studies. Self-learning through trial and error has not only honed her skills but also shaped her into a relentless perfectionist, always striving for the next level of excellence.

The Creative Odyssey

The path from conception to completion of a portrait is a sacred ritual for Alyssa. She often takes on the somber task of immortalising those who have passed away, merging photographs to craft a single, cohesive memory. Her dual talent as a photographer aids immensely in this, allowing her to pre-visualise the final outcome, ensuring that the end product is not just seen but felt.

The Soul of Portraiture

For Alyssa, portraiture is an intimate dialogue between the artist and the subject. Her goal is to capture the essence of individuality, focusing on unique features that tell the person’s story. Each portrait carries with it a sentimental value, a moment frozen in time, and a story that lends the artist a sense of purpose.

The Joy of Paint Parties

Extending her art to the community, Alyssa’s paint parties are events where creativity flows as freely as the paints. These gatherings, which began with family and friends, are her way of demystifying the process of painting, revealing to every participant their own hidden potential.

Navigating Artistic Challenges

The life of a full-time artist is one of both beauty and struggle. Managing the business end while staying true to the creative process can be daunting. Deadlines, social media engagement, and the pursuit of perfection often lead to burnout. Alyssa’s remedy is to seek solace in nature, family, and occasional getaways that rejuvenate her spirit.

Expanding Horizons

Alyssa’s reach as an artist has transcended the Goan shores, courtesy of social media. Instagram became her global gallery, attracting clients from across continents and paving the way for her international presence. Her advice to fellow artists dreaming of global recognition is to stay authentic and embrace the unique.

The Artistic Entrepreneur

Balancing the scales between art and commerce, Alyssa has fine-tuned her approach to the business of art. She found her niche in portrait paintings, leveraging social media to attract clientele while also engaging with the community through events like pop-up bazaars and art competitions.

Future Endeavours and Aspirations

Looking ahead, Alyssa is keen to explore the burgeoning trend of live painting at weddings, inspired by artists like Maggie Smith Kuhn. She also envisions hosting workshops and paint parties to foster a love for art in others.

A Message to Aspiring Artists

Alyssa’s journey is a testament to the belief that following one’s dreams, regardless of the path, can lead to fulfilment. Her encouragement to aspiring artists is to remain steadfast, find one’s niche, and commit wholeheartedly to the craft.

A Personal Tapestry

At 26, Alyssa’s life is a rich mosaic of experiences. With a Master’s Degree in Biotechnology, her artistic and photographic endeavours are reflections of her introspective nature. The lockdown period became an unexpected catalyst for her art, transforming her life and career in ways she never imagined. Through her journey, Alyssa has learned to embrace the unpredictable nature of life, finding solace in the belief that everything happens for a reason.

Tiny Acts, Big Impact: Unveiling the Power of Small Actions

Clive Coutinho highlights how small actions, from simple gestures to eco-friendly choices, can significantly impact personal growth, community improvement, and global change, emphasising the importance of intention and action.

LIFESTYLE article

Introduction

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to overlook the significance of the seemingly trivial moments in our daily lives. Yet, it is often these small actions that hold the power to spark profound change, both within ourselves and in the world around us. Let’s dive into the essence of "small actions" and uncover the remarkable impact they can have when we choose to acknowledge and nurture them.

What are Small Actions?

Small actions are the seemingly insignificant gestures, decisions, or behaviours we undertake in our everyday lives. They can range from a simple smile exchanged with a stranger to the conscious choice to recycle or reduce our carbon footprint. While individually they may appear inconsequential, collectively they form the fabric of our interactions and contributions to society.

Acknowledging Their Impact

Acknowledging the impact of small actions is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it allows us to recognise the value inherent in every moment and decision we make, regardless of its scale. By understanding that even the smallest of gestures can have a ripple effect, we empower ourselves to make intentional choices that align with our values and aspirations. In a world where many issues can appear overwhelming, recognising the significance of small actions offers a source of hope and motivation.

Understanding Small Actions

Examples of Small Actions

Small actions permeate our daily lives, often going unnoticed or uncelebrated. Yet, they hold the potential to brighten someone's day, alleviate a burden, or contribute to a larger cause. Here are a couple of few examples of small actions that can make a big difference:

Smiling at a Stranger: A simple smile can be a beacon of warmth in an otherwise mundane or stressful day. It has the power to lift spirits, foster connection, and remind us of our shared humanity

Holding the Door Open: This small gesture of courtesy and consideration may go unnoticed in the rush of everyday life, but it reflects a willingness to extend kindness to others and create a more inclusive and respectful environment.

These examples represent just a fraction of the myriad of small actions we encounter and engage in daily. While individually they may seem trivial, collectively they contribute to shaping the fabric of our society and influencing the world around us.

Contrast Between Small and Large Actions

It's essential to recognise the distinction between small and large actions, as they each serve distinct purposes and carry different implications.

Large actions often garner more attention and recognition due to their scale and visibility. They may involve significant investments of time, resources, or effort and have the potential to generate profound and immediate impacts. Examples of large actions include organising a fundraising event for a charitable cause, leading a grassroots campaign for social change, or spearheading a community development project.

In contrast, small actions are characterised by their simplicity, accessibility, and ease of implementation. While they may not command the same level of attention or resources as large actions, they are no less meaningful or impactful. Small actions are the building blocks of larger initiatives, serving as the foundation upon which positive change is built. They are the everyday expressions of our values, intentions, and commitments to ourselves and others.

Psychological Perspective

Cognitive Dissonance and Behaviour Change

Cognitive dissonance, introduced in the 1950s, refers to the discomfort experienced when individuals hold conflicting beliefs, attitudes, or values. When faced with cognitive dissonance, people are motivated to alleviate the discomfort by aligning their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Small actions, however, can play a crucial role in this process of behaviour change. Consider, for example, someone who holds a belief in the importance of environmental conservation but rarely takes action to reduce their carbon footprint. The inconsistency between belief and behaviour triggers cognitive dissonance, compelling the individual to find a means to harmonise the contradiction.

By starting with small, manageable actions such as recycling, using reusable products, or conserving energy, individuals can gradually align their behaviours with their environmental values, reducing cognitive dissonance in the process.

Personal Well-Being and Happiness

The influence of small actions extends beyond their external impact on the world; they also play a significant role in shaping our internal experiences of well-being and happiness. Research in positive psychology has highlighted the importance of engaging in small, everyday activities that promote positive emotions, enhance resilience, and foster a sense of fulfilment.

Acts of kindness, gratitude, and mindfulness are just a few examples of small actions that have been shown to enhance well-being and happiness. Whether it is engaging in acts like expressing gratitude to a loved one, enjoying serene moments in nature, or performing random acts of kindness for strangers all play a role in fostering a more positive perspective on life and increasing overall satisfaction.

Overcoming Inaction

Addressing Common Barriers

Despite recognising the importance and potential impact of small actions, many individuals find themselves paralysed by inertia, uncertainty, or selfdoubt. Let’s look at a few barriers below:

Fear of Fa lur

The fear of failure often prevents individuals from taking action, as they worry about making mistakes or falling short of expectations. However, it's essential to reframe failure as a natural part of the learning process rather than a reflection of one's worth or abilities. Embrace failure as an opportunity for growth and resilience, and recognise that every small action taken, regardless of the outcome, brings you closer to your goals.

Perfectio s

Perfectionism can be a significant barrier to taking small actions, as individuals may feel compelled to wait for the "perfect" time or conditions before acting. However, perfection is an elusive and unrealistic standard that can hinder progress and perpetuate procrastination. Instead, embrace the concept of "good enough" and focus on taking imperfect action, knowing that incremental progress is better than waiting for an unattainable ideal.

Overwhelm a d I dec s o

The magnitude of various challenges we all face daily can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of helplessness and paralysis. Break through this inertia by focusing on small, actionable steps that are within your control. By narrowing your focus and identifying specific areas where you can make a difference, you can mitigate overwhelm and build momentum towards larger goals.

www.itsgoa.com

Lack of Time or Re ource

Many individuals cite a lack of time or resources as barriers to taking action. While it's true that our lives are often busy and resources may be limited, it's essential to recognise that small actions need not require significant investments of time or money. Look for opportunities to integrate small actions into your existing routines and leverage your strengths and resources to maximise impact.

Cultivating a Mindset of Action and Contribution

Cultivating a mindset of action and contribution is essential for overcoming inaction and embracing the power of small actions. Here are some strategies to help you adopt this mindset:

Set Clear Goal a d I te o

Define specific, achievable goals that align with your values and aspirations. Break these goals down into smaller, manageable steps that you can take consistently over time.

Prac ce Self-Compa io

Show kindness and compassion towards yourself, particularly during times of adversity or setbacks Recognise that taking small actions, no matter how modest, is an accomplishment worthy of celebration.

Create Accou tability

Share your goals and intentions with friends, family, or community members who can provide support and accountability. Consider oining forces with others to work towards common goals and hold each other accountable for taking action.

Celebrate Progre

Celebrate your progress and achievements along the way, no matter how small. Acknowledge the positive impact of your actions on yourself and

others, and use these victories as fuel to sustain your momentum.

Stay Flexible a d Adap

Be willing to adapt and ad ust your approach as needed based on feedback and changing circumstances. Stay open to new opportunities and ideas, and be willing to course-correct if your initial plans don't yield the desired results.

Conclusion

From the myriad of gestures, decisions, and behaviours we undertake in our everyday lives, small actions have the power to create ripple effects that extend far beyond their initial occurrence.

Small actions matter because they embody our values, intentions, and commitments to ourselves and others. They serve as the building blocks of positive change, fostering connections, promoting empathy, and inspiring collective action. While individually they may seem modest or inconsequential, their cumulative impact is undeniable, shaping the social fabric of communities and contributing to the well-being of individuals and the planet.
