In other news, Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant last month, highlighted his government's commitment to nurturing a thriving startup ecosystem in the state. Speaking at the Goa Innovation and Startup Times (GIST), an event held at the BITSPilani campus at Vasco, Dr. Sawant emphasised the goal of turning ideas into high-growth startups. He also outlined plans to leverage Goa's strengths in industries, tourism, and sustainability. With a focus on mentorship, infrastructure, and market access, the state government aims to empower the next generation of job creators.
Switching gears to the much-anticipated festive season, Goa is gearing up for a surge in tourist footfalls, particularly from December 15 onwards. As restaurants and hotels prepare for night-long parties around Christmas and New Year, the state is set to welcome domestic arrivals with open arms. Despite uncertainties in international travel due to global events, tourism stakeholders in Goa remain optimistic about chartered flights and tourists arriving by regular flights.

Introduction
Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palm-fringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivals - Carnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, UK, USA, etc.

Mr. Kerkar, who is a secondgeneration businessman, founded Liquid Gold, a reputable beverage company in 1994 which is currently a successful partnership firm. He also serves as a Director at Somy Resorts Pvt Limited and is a partner in Lambana Resorts. Beyond business, he is an active member of the Rotary Club and has held various positions, including Chairman, at the Saraswat Education Society. He has also contributed 15 years to SKAL International Goa, showcasing his commitment to the tourism industry.

Q: What is SKAL International Goa’s vision for the tourism industry in the state?
Kerkar: SKAL International Goa is dedicated to working cohesively for progress and collaboration within the tourism sector. We coordinate daily meetings with all tourism stakeholders, focusing on promotions and ensuring the industry functions smoothly. Addressing various challenges encountered by the tourism industry is also a key part of our responsibilities. SKAL International Goa has 134 members, including 91 hoteliers and 42 Young SKAL members.
Q: What are the key challenges before the tourism sector in Goa?

Insufficient accessible footpaths and roads lead to traffic issues. The industry urgently needs a skilled, trained workforce. Efforts are essential to enhance communication skills for interacting with diverse cultures. Goa also needs to improve its public infrastructure, including roads, footpaths and signages, to enhance and improve the tourist experience. It is crucial to address these challenges to maintain Goa's appeal as a popular, tourist-friendly destination.
How have Goa's tourism strengths improved over the last two decades?
Kerkar: Goans, by nature, are very friendly and cooperative. That is where our strength comes from. It is one of the biggest factors behind the sharp increase in tourism in Goa. Goa has a plethora of beautiful beaches, shacks and cuisine which are major points of attraction. Wellness tourism, hinterland tourism, eco-friendly tourism align with our culture. There is also water-sports tourism, which is a major attraction.
Q: Goa has hosted a series of sports and adventure sports events, including the highprofile IRONMAN 70.3 India and mega events like the National Games. How is Goa poised to attract the sports and adventure tourism markets in this light?
Kerkar: I believe the sports infrastructure in Goa has seen a lot of investment and renovation by the state government, especially for the National Games. Sports holds a tremendous potential as a tourist attraction, especially when it comes to adventure and water sports. We are currently developing proposals in this regard.

Hailing from Saligao, Connie holds a degree in Business Management and an Advanced Diploma in Travel and Tourism studies. Her professional journey began as a Customer Service executive with the Taj group of Hotels, followed by a role as an Executive Secretary to the Chairman of an Oil Company in the Middle East. However, her life took a drastic turn in June 2011 when a tragic accident left her with a spinal injury, changing her life irreversibly.
