Another Happy Roof! I am the President of our Homeowners Association in Fl. I heard about Hammerhead Softwash through a friend who had contacted them to clean their roofs. After meeting with Joe Marchiselli, and having a demo section of my roof done for no charge, I was thrilled with the outcome and immediately contracted them to do all 20 units in our complex. Needless to say, our residents were thrilled with the job they did. Their staff were extremely polite and helpful. They even moved and put back furniture and plants while doing the work. Our members immediately phoned me and wanted to pay right away and couldn’t believe the price. We had our roofs cleaned 3 years ago by a pressure washing company and weren’t happy with the result. Hammerhead’s job by far excelled our previous cleaning and we are very happy to recommend them to anyone. -John Strong, President Norstar Cove Villas www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Hometown STORY

This is a very sweet story about a very special lady who has made it her life’s work to bring pleasure to others through her delicious chocolate confections, and pay it forward whenever the opportunity arises! Michelle Palisi, owner of Chocolates by Michelle, conquered numerous hardships to arrive where she is today. Having battled undiagnosed dyslexia as an adolescent, Michelle knew deep down that she wanted more out of life than that which being a server offered. When it came to fulfilling her dream of starting a business, Michelle didn’t let a lack of business training, investment capital, or her learning disability stand in her way. “Nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself,” she explained. Michelle and her firefighter husband, Bob, retired to Florida from Mt Vernon, NY, in 1980, after their two children were grown. She could not resist the entrepreneurial spirit within, so she approached the Small Business Administration about opening a specialty chocolate business. After being promptly dismissed due to the riskiness associated with that ype of business, and what they perceived as a “speculative venture” no bank would approve for funding, Michelle decided she would do it on her own. She took the $2600 nest egg she had built after having quit smoking, and she opened a small storefront in New Port Richey in 1985. Her lack of business knowledge and capital left her floundering after only a few weeks, but she continued searching for ways to make it work. “I was so green,” she says. “I had no idea how undercapitalized I was.” Michelle spoke with local media outlets to get the word out about her unique chocolate confections, and the

gamble paid off! Press stories featuring her flair for creating unique molded and hand-dipped confections aroused customers. Her talent for customizing one-ofa-kind creations helped Michelle to thrive in a business known for its high failure rate. In addition to the retail business, Michelle uses her personal collection of over 10,000 molds to create specialties for corporate clients like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Tampa Bay Rays, and GTE. She also provides custom-themed chocolates, and caters her chocolate fountains for parties and special events, including weddings, birthdays, bar mitzvahs, grand openings, and offbeat occasions like divorce decrees! Michelle’s menu consists of everything from logo embossed chocolate coins and chocolate covered strawberries, as well as assorted chocolate delicacies, including mouth-watering fudge. Customizable cocoa creations are always possible, along with personalized ribbon, gift baskets, gift box towers, and party trays. She also teaches classes Michelle is a past winner of West Pasco Chamber of Commerce Small Business Person of the Year, and she actively participates in numerous community organizations and non-profits, creating gift baskets and elaborate dessert tables for fundraisers. “I love a challenge, and coming up with unique ways to present chocolate is a joy for me,” Michelle remarked. “The secret to success is giving back.” Michelle and Bob reside in Hudson, and spend lots of time with their adult children, Danielle and Michael, and grandchildren, Parris and Rachael.

We asked families around our community to describe their holiday memories in three words (p 24). Mine are Family, Joy and Love. I want to dedicate this Christmas to my grandmother, 100 years-young! I have spent almost every Christmas of my life with her, which is quite a gift in and of itself! She loves to sing Christmas songs and tell us about her Christmas celebrations as a child in England. She was grateful to receive an orange in her stocking, from Father Christmas. She certainly has seen the meaning of the holidays change in the span of 100 years, having gained and lost family members and traditions. Thank you Nanny for handing down some of your family traditions, as I now pass them on to my grandchildren. That, too, is a wonderful gift! Speaking of gifts, we have a wonderful last-minute do- ityourself gift idea (p 15), Peppermint Foot Scrub, made with basic items you probably have on hand in your home. However, as great as DIY gifts are, we want to emphasize the importance of supporting our local businesses this holiday season. They have unique gift ideas, gift cards and gift certificates (p 9), perfect for anyone on your list! Shopping local is a great opportunity to help small businesses, support your community, and experience shopping at its best, complete with personalized service and attention! Carrying on the gift of family traditions, make sure to visit the Celebration of Lights, and read the heartwarming story about Dave Parris, his daughter Kara, and this amazing holiday legacy in its first season (p 29). Wishing you and your families a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa and a very Happy New Year!

Life is Precious I feel truly blessed that I am healthy, I am willing and I am able to serve others during challenging times. You see, I have very special friends and family members who are suffering with pain & heartache this holiday season, and I remember each as this is written. Life becomes more interesting, precious and fragile with each passing day… month… year. My best friend is grieving the suicide of her father (four days after her birthday a few years ago), and the loss of her Mom to cancer this past year. In October, she celebrated her husband’s retirement, and he promptly filed for divorce on the anniversary of their second wedding vow renewal. Her life changed in an instant, leaving her devastated and deeply depressed. Then there’s my brother-in-law and his siblings who lost their Mom October 30th. Their holidays – their lives – will never be the same. I had the honor, pleasure and privilege to care for this retired nurse of 42 years, in the last three months of her life. It was an eyeopening experience to watch the digression of such a wonderful, vibrant, intelligent lady, thanks to stage-four lymphoma, dementia and heart issues. Ironically, she was the nurse who helped my

Taylor Made to a Tee By Debra Taylor Tee Mom in the delivery room when I was born; I went through 12 years of school with her youngest daughter; and her youngest son married my little sister after a long courtship. I was there to say goodbye with a kiss on her forehead the day she died, bringing everything full-circle. Another dear friend and brilliant doctor I’ve been honored to assist throughout the last five years in his battle with an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis, is losing use of what was his only functioning hand. He is experiencing difficulty breathing, and his facial muscles are now failing. Like I said from the beginning, I feel very blessed. We all ride this rollercoaster called life, and it’s not always a good time. Sometimes, it’s absolutely nauseating and gut-wrenching. During the holidays, we all remember those wonderful souls we have loved and lost, and the fabulous memories with which we are left. Yet, let us also remember those dealing with debilitating health issues, be it physical, mental and/or emotional. Keep in mind the less fortunate who may not have family, friends, shelter or food. Whenever possible, do unto others, because this rollercoaster called life is nothing but a mystery. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa and a Happy, Healthy, Safe New Year!

Peppermint Foot Scrub Feet are the foundation upon which we stand, step, skip, and play, and they can really take a beating, especially in the intense heat of summer and colder temps of winter. Although, sand is a natural exfoliant to help slough off dead, dry skin from our heels, most residents of Florida don’t spend an exorbitant amount of time on the beach… at least, not as much as non-Floridians believe! Why not opt for a DIY sugar-based exfoliant scrub you can make for yourself or give as gifts this holiday season? Ingredients and preparation are simple, easy on the wallet, and just what tired tootsies need!

Peppermint Foot Scrub 2 – 3 Cups of White Granulated Sugar 1/4 - 1/3 Cup of Olive Oil (Almond Oil or Coconut Oil) Peppermint Oil* Red Food Coloring OR several Frozen Raspberries, Juiced (serves as organic coloring)* Pour the sugar into a bowl and add the olive oil (almond or coconut), but careful not to use too much. Eye-ball consistency until the mixture is soft and moist in texture, but not swimming in oil. Add a few drops (or your desired amount), of peppermint oil for fragrance. Separate the sugar/oil mixture into two separate containers. Leave sugar scrub in one mixing container white. Add food coloring (or raspberry juice) to scrub in second container and mix thoroughly for a pink-red color (depending upon how much color you use). Make a basic paper funnel with an opening large enough to easily transfer the sugar scrub mixtures into a pretty glass jar or container. Layer about a half inch of white sugar scrub first, and use a spoon or other utensil to tap the white layer until it is flat and smooth. Repeat with pink/ red layer. Repeat layering process until jar/container is full. Place a lid on the peppermint sugar scrub container, and print a pretty label from your computer. Voila! This peppermint foot scrub makes the perfect gift for a hard-working Mom, stressed-out sister, or supportive best friend! *This recipe can be adapted to use different scented or flavored oils, such as lavender, and coloring can always be altered, adjusted or eliminated, based on your personal preference.

Experience a Judgment Free Zone at Planet Fitness Do you hesitate to go to the gym because you feel the eyes of judgment upon from the moment you arrive? Do you feel pressured to adhere to strict contracts most facilities require with membership? Those days are over thanks to Planet Fitness in Holiday, owners Bonita & Paul Mancia and their “No Judgment” philosophy, which also serves as their policy. Bonita explains, “Here at Planet Fitness, we are a Judgment Free Zone. We don’t cater to bodybuilders or power lifters. We are geared towards general fitness. Most of our members are first-time gym users, so we create a comfortable, non-intimidating atmosphere.” Open and staffed 24 hours/day, seven days a week, Planet Fitness offers plenty of cardio equipment without time limits or sign-up sheets. To make your cardio workout more pleasurable, watch your favorite television programs on your device’s receiver connected to one of their 55” flat screen TV’s. The resistance equipment is easy to operate making it incredibly user-friendly. All machines contain a diagram with instructions for operation, as well as the specific muscle group the machine works. “Another thing that sets Planet Fitness apart from other gyms is we offer unlimited group fitness training (PE@PF) with a certified instructor. Plus, if you have never worked out before, we have a Design Your Own Program class. In this class, a certified instructor develops an individual workout specifically for you. This includes designated equipment usage to achieve desired results, recommendations for frequency of use, and the appropriate amount of cardio that is best for you,” Bonita added.

If the thought of being a contracted member is unappealing, their “No Commitment” membership is only $10/month, and can be cancelled at any time without charge or penalty. The second option is their “Black Card” membership for $19.99/month. This membership includes unlimited guest privileges at the Holiday facility, as well as at 850 Planet Fitness locations nationwide; unlimited use of the hydro-massage beds, level four tanning beds and massage chairs; and half-price cooler drinks. To emphasize the importance of their clients, “Customer Appreciation” is recognized with a pizza night on the first Monday of each month, and bagels and coffee the second Tuesday of each month. Bonita added, “We love building relationships with the members and seeing them having fun while getting in shape! When we see members outside of the gym at the grocery store or the mall, it’s rewarding when they talk to us in front of their friends and families about fitness goals they accomplished at our gym.” Planet Fitness is located at 4637 Sunray Drive, Holiday. Holiday Traditions

The Friedlander Family Warmth · Fun · Excitement

Paul Friedlander, Membership Director of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, loved the lights that adorned the exterior of his boyhood home during the holidays and the big Christmas tree they decorated with “an awesome train set going around the bottom.” Today, Paul’s holidays still include decorating their home, but the process now includes a beautiful baby granddaughter, a daughter-in-law, and additional in-laws, making the occasion especially joyful!

“We decorate a tree and inside the house and invite a lot of friends and family to participate in Thanksgiving and Christmas events,” Paul said. On Christmas Day, Paul spends invaluable time with his family, eating wonderful food and watching his favorite football match-ups. However, the most important tradition he hopes to extend through the generations is that of “being thankful for what you have and helping those who can use a hand-up!”

The Glewen Family Family ·Food ·Laughter

Candace Bell Glewen, Vice President of Commercial Lending at Mid Florida Bank and 2014 Queen Chasco, reminisces about love of family fellowship, food, fun and laughter when she thinks about the holidays. She fondly remembers Santa arriving at her childhood home on Christmas Eve, and now, takes extreme pleasure in sitting around the fireplace with family Christmas morning and enjoying time together. When it comes to the food, traditional turkey is out. “Our holiday meal consists of prime rib served with baked spaghetti, sautéed mushrooms, green beans and cole slaw,” Candace explains.

The Delgardo Family Humbled · Blessed · Joyous

As a child, Alice Delgardo, Vice President of Community Impact for United Way of Pasco County, would join her Mom in baking holiday pound cakes their family to deliver as gifts to friends and neighbors, singing Christmas carols along the way. The memories are as sweet as the succulent smells of Christmas wafting throughout their home. Alice recalls, “It was always cold living in Boston, so we would bundle up and venture out to make our deliveries. Even though it was cold outside, I would always become warmed by seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces when receiving the cake. It’s amazing how such a small gift can bring so much joy!” She also remembers her mother extending the love by making an extra dish and purchasing additional gifts to share with a family experiencing hardship. Through the years, Alice and her family have continued the holiday tradition of giving fresh-baked pound cakes to friends and neighbors, and they now include local businesses they frequently use. Additionally, Alice takes great pleasure in purchasing extra gifts for those in need, and is proud her children and grandchildren have embraced these precious holiday traditions. “Our entire family has been greatly blessed to serve others during the holidays,” Alice said.

The Lucas Family God · Family · Friends

“My fondest memory as a child was spending time with my Dad on Friday nights during the month of December and visiting my Mom at her Jewelry store, as she worked late during the holiday rush. My Dad and I would go to eat and shop for my Mom.” Jeff Lucas, a successful attorney and partner of Lucas, Green & Magazine, husband and father eagerly anticipates the fellowship with his family, along with the typical holiday trimmings, including ham, turkey, and Italian Lasagna, followed by a variety of pies, cookies, Oreo balls and brownies. On Christmas Eve each child receives a new pair of comfy pajamas, in which to sleep well prior to an exciting Christmas morn! The culmination of a fabulous Lucas family holiday begins the day after Christmas, with a trip to the Caymen Islands, complete with scuba diving!

This Chamber Means Business! By Paul Friedlander COLLABORATION vs. COMPETITION Can’t we all just get along? Competition is healthy. For the most part. In business, healthy competition pushes you to do your best, whether you’re competing with others or yourself. Competition, however, can get ugly really, fast. It’s important to judge yourself against your own strengths and responsibilities, so you that you aren’t constantly comparing yourself to others. It seems counterintuitive sometimes, asking for help and collaborating instead of competing when it can actually be the best way to go. It pays to be nice. It is important to realize that everyone has a different skill set, so how could working with others not be the key to success? It is reaching out and forming a partnership or a think tank that really makes you a success. It might even make you a friend. First Annual

Celebration of Lights

A Family Tradition That Shines Bright

Start a new family tradition at one of the most beautiful spectacles of the holiday season, found just up the road in Spring Hill.

along to holiday music in your car, and plan to Surf with Santa at the North Pole Beach Party!

Celebration of Lights was the long-term vision of Dave Parris, a West Pasco community leader who passed away in August following a long battle with esophageal cancer. He worked tirelessly over the last five years to develop plans for what he dreamed would, one day, be a cherished holiday tradition for families along the Suncoast, while concurrently raising funds for charities.

However, the fun doesn’t stop there! In the middle of the drive, visit Jingle Bell Junction, home of Feather the Elf. Smell the delicious aromas of holiday goodies and take a stroll among 14 beautifully decorated buildings featuring entertainment for the whole family.

Dave went as far as to contact administrators in Altoona, PA, where an impressive light show is presented each Christmas, and he modeled plans for Celebration of Lights by the Pennsylvania display. Since Dave’s passing, his family has stepped up to make the Celebration of Lights the spectacular display their husband & father dreamed it would be. It has not been without challenges and disappointments. Midwest Lights backed out of doing the set-up due to illness within their ranks. However, Kara, D ve’s daughter and Executive Director of the Celebration of Lights, recruited the help of her husband and her brother, who traveled from Wyoming to pitch in, and insists the show will go on! Furthermore, they will follow through with their Dad’s goal to donate proceeds to benefit Angelus House, Good Samaritan Clinic, Haley House Fund, Metropolitan Ministries and Safety Town.

Jingle Bell Junction is also the venue for a variety of stores for a truly unique holiday shopping experience. Some of your favorite concessions will also be available for your enjoyment. Remember your camera for a photo with Santa! The Celebration of Lights is found in Safety Town at the Rotary Pavilion at the Concourse, 15325 Alric Pottberg Rd., Spring Hill. The event began November 27, and continues December 4, 5 & 6, and December 11 – January 3; Weekdays, Dusk – 9:00 PM; Fridays & Saturdays, Dusk - 11:00 PM. Prices are $20/carload; $40/14 passenger van, and includes the mile drive-thru and entry to Jingle Bell Junction.

The first annual Celebration of Lights captivates boys and girls of all ages with dazzling lights and twinkling animation. Play “Where’s Rudolph?” as you drive through this amazing display! See the full “Twelve Days of Christmas” while singing

BY DIANA JEROME Vouvray is the most famous and most respected wine of the Loire Valley’s Touraine district. The title covers white wines of various styles (sweet, dry, still and sparkling), from eight villages around the medieval town of Vouvray, on the northern banks of the Loire. Vouvray is the flagship wine of the Chenin Blanc grape (or Pineau de la Loire as it is known there), followed ever-closer by Savennieres and the sweet whites of Anjou. Few wine regions in the world use Chenin to the same extent, and none highlights the variety’s organoleptic qualities with such focus and impressive diversity.

What is the Feast of the Seven Fishes? It’s what Italians do when they say they’re fasting. More precisely, the Feast is a meal served in Italian households on La Vigilia (Christmas Eve). In many parts of Italy, the night is traditionally a partial fast, during which no meat should be served. But in true Italian style, this prescription has morphed into something very unfastlike indeed: course after course of luxurious seafood dishes, often as many as 7, 10, or even 13. Some families do seven for the sacraments. Some do ten for the stations of the cross. And some even do 13 for the 12 apostles plus Jesus. Regardless of the religious symbolism, for most people the main point of the meal is to gather family and friends and enjoy delicious food and wine. To accompany this feast, we recommend our lovely French Vouvray. Some options for this fabulous event could include: • Clams with Oregano and Bread Crumbs (Vongole Origanate) • Marinated Fresh Anchovies (Alici Marinati) • Linguine with Clams (Linguine con le Vongole) • Spaghetti with Mussels (Spaghetti con le Cozze) • Salt Cod with Tomatoes and Capers (Baccalà alla Vesuviana) • Jumbo Shrimp Marsala House-wife Style (Gamberoni Casalinga Siciliana) • Eel with Olives, Chiles, and Capers (Anguilla Livernese) • Broccoli Sautéed in Wine and Garlic • Chocolate Chip–Orange Cannoli (Cannoli di Ricotta) • Christmas Honey Fritters (Struffoli)

Although Vouvray town is situated on a plateau, a number of nearby streams interrupt the flow of land, creating shallow valleys with sheltered south-facing slopes. It is on these slopes, around the northern side of the town, that the most prized vineyard sites are located. This diverse and dynamic wine make it a pure pleasure to enjoy. The rewards of a mature, good-quality Vouvray are well worth waiting for.

Things You Can Learn From a Dog

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride. Allow the experience of fresh air & the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience. Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory. Take naps & stretch before rising. Run, romp & play daily. Eat with gusto & enthusiasm. Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you’re not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by & nuzzle them gently. Thrive on attention & let people touch you. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. On hot days, drink lots of water & lay under a shady tree. When you’re happy, dance around & wag your entire body. No matter how often you’re scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing & pout... run right back & make friends. Bond with your pack. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com
