You Create the Memories;

Seven Springs Golf & Country Club Does the Rest!

W

hen Samuel H. Stephenson and his wife, Elizabeth, settled as early residents in New Port Richey, they were believers in the therapeutic healing qualities of the mineral springs which have since become Seven Springs. Samuel created a pool by installing a well pipe to divert water from the spring. This pool overflowed into the Anclote River, where they built a bath house for guests, and the mineral water was shared with the guests if they wanted it. This was essentially an early “health resort.” This early resort area has since become Seven Springs Golf and Country Club, and it includes even more than the Stephenson’s possibly could have imagined their mineral springs pool becoming. SSGCC has everything you desire and deserve from an elegant, member owned country club: Golf, Dining, Catering, Recreation, and, of course, Membership! SSGCC features two golf courses, practice range, golf shop, two swimming pools, (one Olympic-size for families and one for adults), tennis courts, fitness center, library and clubhouse for parties and dining. Golf Digest has named the Seven Springs Championship Golf Course among Florida’s best and one of the top two golf facilities in Pasco County! Designed by architect, Ron Garl, these semi-private golf courses offer 36-holes to challenge players and provide opportunities for skill enhancement for members and their guests. The Champion course is enhanced with majestic pines, cypress woods and beautiful lakes. The Challenger course has been referred to as a game enhancement course as it requires precision with the golfers short irons. Moms & Dads who want to sharpen their game skills, as well as introduce their children to the art of the game love this course. Children under the age of 16 enjoy playing a complimentary game of golf when teeing off with a green fee paying adult. The courses open at 7:00 AM, and offer competitive rates for Members and their guests. SSGCC is a semi private golf and country club. The public is always welcome. The practice facility includes an ample driving tee area, four target greens, fairway bunkers and a large putting green.

Golf professional, Mark Haluska, a 25-year member of the PGA, offers superior instruction through private lessons. His philosophy is “Keep it simple, learn the fundamentals and don’t take them for granted.” The primary areas on which he focuses include grip, stance, posture, alignment and ball placement. Assistant Golf Pro, Mark Boyko, also teaches private lessons individually and in groups of two or more. When it comes to catering, SSGCC insists, “You create the memories. We will do the rest.” From intimate gatherings of less than 25 people to wedding parties of 200, SSGCC is the perfect venue to serve your needs! The Floridian-style clubhouse features 2 large banquet rooms, complete with dance floors, and a smaller banquet room overlooking the pristine Champion Golf Course and the sparkling pool. Further, the grounds provide a beautiful backdrop for photos and weddings on the country club grounds. The culinary team at SSGCC always provides scrumptious, unique menus with a special touch to meet your needs. A Catering Director is available for consultations at ext. 231. The dining experience is one of excellence with special menus for lunch, Thursdays, Fridays and weekends (find their menus online to view the options available). Expect nothing but the finest when it comes to quality of service at SSGCC! Seven Spring’s staff will help your organization plan a special event or tournament to raise donations for your cause. They have also partnered with our Pasco County Schools and created a program called the “Gift of Giving”. SSGCC gives back 5% cash quarterly to the school of your choice with each purchase of golf, dining and special events. Wendi McAnn, Clubhouse Manager says “You would be surprised how quickly it adds up. We are so happy to support our local schools!” A variety of membership opportunities are available at SSGCC. Become an Equity Golf Member, Associate Golf Member or Social Member and you will have access to all this wonderful facility has to offer! Seven Springs Golf and Country Club is located at 3535 Trophy Blvd., in New Port Richey. Learn more about SSGCC on their website: www.ssgcc.com, or call 727-376-0039. Like them on facebook, their 1,000th fan will win a complimentary membership.

Giving Thanks for 20 Years!

For 20 years, pets in Pasco County have been blessed with top notch veterinary care thanks to Dr. Robert Wehr and Animal Care Center!

Animal Care Center

of Pasco

Dr. Wehr opened the doors of Animal Care Center on November 6, 1992. As a small one-doctor practice, Dr. Wehr set up shop in a small strip mall in New Port Richey. In 1995, Dr. Dave Griffin joined Dr. Wehr, at which time they broke ground for Animal Care Center's own free-standing facility!

These full-service vet hospitals utilize highly specialized diagnostic equipment, a laboratory with hematology & serology equipment, digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, ECG and telemedicine, which the doctors & staff use to determine what best way to treat your furry or feathered love one!

The new construction was finished and Animal Care Center re-opened for business in December 1995. Dr's Wehr and Griffin soon discovered the need to add associate veterinarians to their team. Soon, the business had grown to become a full-service, five-doctor practice. Dr. Steven Elliott was one of those new associates who came aboard in May 2000. By January 2003, he partnered with Dr. Wehr and Dr. Griffin as an owner.

They offer services such as laser therapy, soft tissue & orthopedic surgeries, canine rehabilitation, acupuncture, digital dental radiography, behavior consultations, puppy training, grooming, and boarding with webcam access. Animal Care Center of Pasco, also houses a full-service pet pharmacy for recommended prescriptions, heartworm and flea prevention medications. Additionally, a veterinarian and several nurses are on staff to provide excellence in treating exotic pets.

In 2000, Animal Care Center continued expanding by opening Country Oaks Animal Hospital, because a veterinary hospital was not available in that area at the time.

Dog grooming is available by professional stylists at all three locations. To pamper your cat with a grooming, contact Best Care or Country Oaks.

In 2002, further expansions included the acquisition of Best Care Animal Hospital.

When it comes to boarding your pooch, it’s the next best thing to home! Best Care Animal Hospital offers upscale boarding which includes a plush bed, a radio/tv/dvd player, spacious, comfortable, climate controlled indoor runs and a fenced area for exercise. Want to keep in touch with your buddy? Webcam access is available. Plus, your puppy will always receive a bath before it’s time to go home.

Dr. Wehr retired from practice in 2009. However, 20 years later, his once, one-doctor office, is now Animal Care Center of Pasco, Inc., with eight veterinarians in three facilities to serve your precious pet’s healthcare needs. Included are dozens of team members who love your best friends as much as you do! Pets are members of the family. When it comes to their health, they deserve quality attention by people who care. The current owners, Dr. Griffin & Dr. Elliott, have a mission to provide compassionate care for pets, with courteous service to their owners, always fostering the special bond that exists between them. Their goal all along has been to promote happy, healthy pets in order to create long-term client/patient relationships through caring and efficient veterinarians and staff members.

Animal Care Center is located at 4041 Little Rd., New Port Richey. Call 727-376-7600, or visit www.accpasco.com. Country Oaks Animal Hospital, 12030 Moon Lake Rd., New Port Richey. Call 727-857-9977, or visit www.countryoaksah.com. Best Care Animal Hospital, 6041 Trouble Creek Rd., New Port Richey. Call 727-846-8899, or visit www.bestcareah.com.

With three hospitals to serve you & your pet, the focus is always on their overall health. This includes preventative care and owner education programs.

Fall In Love with Starkey Ranch

A Picture is Worth a

Thousand Words!

What a beautiful piece of serenity with a great scenic view right here in our own back yard! As you drive into Starkey Ranch you can feel the history all around you. You will pass a plaque made of weathered gray boards erected by J.B. Starkey Sr. as a tribute to his old friends such as Odis Cowart, Doc Brittle and Ham Beckett. The plaque reads "In appreciation of many former partners and old friends who, in the early days of the ranch, camped, rode and hunted here and whose friendship I will always cherish. A journey back in time when men like J.B. Starkey Sr. homesteaded on the pristine wilderness now bequeathed to future generations of the Starkey family. In the 1930’s Starkey and his ranching partners hopped on horses and drove the herd north from Largo to the grassy expanses of Pasco County turning their cattle loose on 16,000 acres of unfenced pasture and forest cut by the Pithlachascotee and Anclote Rivers. The vast majority of the original ranch, about 13,000 acres, is locked up in nature preserve known as the J.B. Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey. The Longleaf area and other small developments take up about 500 acres leaving the remaining 2,500 acres for planned development. The family requests to build as many as 5,000 homes on the land, keeping about half the acreage in conservation for the enjoyment of future homeowners. It is intended to be a return to the way development was done before World War II when the pedestrian was king. The project is expected to include retail shops, restaurants and more. This way residents can work and play within the Starkey Ranch.

You too can enjoy the solitude of over 1,000 acres of ranch land at the event area of this working cattle ranch. If you are looking for a fun picnic in the country, or an elegant western hoe-down, corporate parties and even weddings, Starkey Ranch is the place you've been looking for! Superior Events can plan your event at the Starkey Ranch. They offer team building events, birthday parties, tour group events, and company picnics. THE REAL DIFFERENCE IN

NERIUMAD’S CLINICAL TRIALS

The results from NeriumAD’s clinical trial are based on hard data output from ST&T’s facial scanning equipment, which measures the actual change in the skin. However, many well-known skincare companies base the results from their clinical studies on participants’ opinions or the visual grading of doctors, rather than the scientific facial scanning method we employ. This means the efficacy of their products are determined by what subjects think or what a doctor observes, instead of what a computer dictates. Using the most advanced facial scanning equipment available, ST&T Research set out to thoroughly test the effects of NeriumAD Age-Defying Treatment. ST&T’s technology, which includes fluorescence spectroscopy and artificial intelligence, allows them to see what is happening on the skin’s surface, as well as what is developing beneath the skin. Although NeriumAD’s results can easily be seen by the naked eye, the percentages from our clinical trials are based solely on unbiased scientific data.

Aquaterra Salon & Spa to Host a Cut-A-Thon to benefit the Volunteer Way Aquaterra Salon & Spa, located at 7813 Mitchell Blvd. is hosting a Cut-A-Thon to benefit The Volunteer Way on Oct. 20th from 3pm to 6 PM. The Volunteer Way and their hunger relief partners assist approximately 20,000 families each month, throughout Florida, with food and personal items to supplement their meager incomes. We are a volunteer charity that serves the hurting people of Florida. They give hungry people a hand up and a kind word when they come to us for assistance. Last year they donated 7,000,000 pounds of food to feed homeless and low income hungry children, seniors and families. Their mission is to unite faith-based and community hunger relief charities to help the vulnerable people in our communities. “We want to make a difference in the community and thought this would be a great charity to donate to this year,” says owner Bob Yesko. “We will have a barrel all week before the event to collect food and on the day of the Cut-A-Thon we will accept a monetary or food donation for the haircuts.” Visit www.AquaterraSalon.com or call 727-727-372-8676 for more information.

3 EASY TIPS TO HELP YOU AVOID HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN! By Melanie Milletics

Fall is a glorious time of year. Family and friends gather together to celebrate holidays, and Sunday football games give everyone an excuse to chill together… and overeat. Holiday parties and game day typically entails a gorge fest of unhealthy food in large portions that will increase your waist size faster than you can say “Happy Holidays!” This is the time of year that people typically gain 8-10 pounds. Unfortunately, the statistics say that those 8-10 pounds you gain, may never be lost. That’s right – the New Year’s Resolutions come and go and the weight hangs on. There is really only one solution, and that is prevention. It’s about setting the resolution NOW that you will be in a SMALLER Little black dress… and not a big black smock! The fall is the perfect time to start healthy new habits centered on healthy eating and exercise. Find something that you enjoy, and work it into your schedule NOW, before life gets overwhelming. If you make it a habit now, you will be far more likely to stick to it when the temptations are high in December. 3 Easy Habits to start now to drop a size by New Years Eve 1. Have a protein shake for breakfast to kick start your metabolism and help you to keep your lean muscle. 2. Eliminate sugar laden drinks like soda and mocha frapa calorie bombs. Instead, turn to water and fresh brewed green tea and watch your body detox, your skin glow… and your fat melt away.

WOMAN The Secret to Looking Young is Already Inside of You What if your own body could turn back the biological clock to a day where your complexion matched your energetic and fun-loving personality? Time travel is a complex idea, but rejuvenating your facial features has become a simple process due to a noted new procedure called fat grafting which can restore the youthful good looks of both men and women. Aging is impossible to stop but the effects it has on the face, like wrinkles, crow’s feet and loose skin, are now fixable using the little extra weight you’ve got in various parts of your body. Unlike operations involving fillers like Collagen, Radiesse, or Restylane, fat grafting involves taking your own unwanted fat and shifting it to another part of your body. This lowers the risk of allergic reaction considerably as well as the time required for the procedure and subsequent upkeep. While a procedure involving filler means being re-injected every 4 to 6 months, fat grafting involves only one procedure that can be done in a relatively short time, allowing for a simple recovery which should only last a few days. The effects are immediately noticeable after this single treatment and can last for 3 to 5 years.

Dr. Cappiello was one of the first to do fat transfer to the face and has been performing this and similar procedures using stem cells and platelet rich plasma for over 8 years. He has performed numerous fat transfer operations to the breasts, buttock, hands and his favorite procedure, fat transfer to the face, lips, and eyebrows. The procedure is done using local anesthesia and conscious sedation at his Florida approved Surgery Center. Do yourself a favor this holiday season, treat yourself or someone else to a cost-efficient and easy way to recapture the beauty that aging took away with an all-natural and easy cosmetic procedure like fat grafting. Also, make sure to opt for an eyebrow lift or lip lift to get the full effect of the youthful you. Let this revolutionary and popular procedure tranform you back into a beautiful you.

DEFY Aging

By Barbara Marville-Kelly

The “MASTER SECRETS” To DEFY AGING! Fall is here, and it is time to reset the clock! So is it Spring Forward and Fall back, or Fall Forward, Spring Back? Difficult to remember for setting our tick-tock clocks! Either way, we can turn back our own BIOLOGICAL clock by “Mastering” the “Secrets” to defy aging. This leads the way to resetting, rebooting, regenerating and revealing a healthier, happier “Mind, Body & Spirit!” Why wait for the resolutions of the official New Year, when our individual “New Year” can begin right now? Once we commit to commit to our temple (body) and learn to master the wisdom and secrets of the ages, we can begin the process naturally. Our philosophy to live by is “age is only a number!” We have learned that the “fountain of youth” lies within each of us, just waiting to be tapped into. Aging is a premature, cognitive commitment, where we see others growing old and we think we should grow old as well. It doesn’t have to be that way, nor should it be. As long as we can arm ourselves with the knowledge that gives us power over premature aging to become ageless, healthy individuals for years to come! After 40 years of our own solid research backed by medical studies, science documentation, and applied methods, we’ve discovered when and why we begin to age as we do. Believe it or not, beginning early in life, there is one main contributing factor: the DEATH HORMONE! The death hormone stems from many things including the choices we make as we travel the journey of life. Factors such as lack of proper nutrition, 18

toxicity, bio-sludge, sleep deprivation, depletion of human growth hormone, brain shrinkage, menopause, “manOpause”, and the number one precursor to the death hormone, STRESS, creates the havoc of dis-ease and premature death, in the majority of cases. Very rarely is this discussed. The GOOD news is, all of this can be reversed to some degree simply by taking the first step of the “blueprint formula” that grants access into the “Master Secrets” to defy aging and live a quality life of balance and harmony. Keeping things simple, natural, and authentic are just a few clues of the “blueprint formula”. Living the journey and not the destination of life, is another. The HEART takes center stage and is power-packed with intelligence, even moreso than the brain. MADE IN WEST TAMPA BAY ”I love little baby ducks, old pick-up trucks, slow-moving trains, and rain. I love little, country streams, sleep without dreams, Sunday school in May, and hay. And I love you, too! “I love leaves in the wind, pictures of my friends, birds in the world, and squirrels. I love coffee in a cup, little fuzzy pups, bourbon in a glass, and grass. And I love you, too! “I love honest open smiles, kisses from a child, tomatoes on the vine, and onions. I love winners when they cry, losers when they try, music when it's good, and life. And I love you, too!”

Tom T. Hall, Country Music Singer Songwriter

I have fond memories of listening to this song in the early/mid 70’s, with my parents and siblings. I loved it because Kentucky native, Tom T. Hall mentioned loving “little baby ducks,” and I did, too! I cherish those precious memories with my family. I am thankful for the way they raised me to be appreciative, respectful, and especially loving.

Connecting Local Businesses ...to the residents of our community

books, art, culture Tom T lists many things for which we both share a love. However, I want to add a few of my own. I am not the poet/lyricist Tom T is, but in contemplating this column and the “Fall in Love” theme, I decided to simply share some of my personal loves. I love God, Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit, without whom I would not be the same person my Parents raised. To that end, I love my family, my friends, and my colleagues. I love the man in my life, Mike, truly, madly, deeply. I love and have a true passion for chiropractic and the chiropractors for whom I have had the pleasure and privilege to work. I love the hundreds- maybe thousands- of patients who I have been able to serve over the last 23 years. I love my customers, local business sponsors of IT’s YOUR HOME MAGAZINE. I love IT’s YOUR HOME MAGAZINE, and our publisher, Debbie Dawson (whom I am proud to also call my friend). I love the water. I love cruises. I love swimming. I love seafood. I love red wine. I love good music. I love the smell of fresh cut grass. I love to see the color of leaves as they change in Autumn. I love Thanksgiving food. I love holidays and the fellowship of family and friends.

And I love you, too!

Fixing Leaking Toilets The working parts of a toilet can start to wear down over time and cause problems. Often this involves running water such as when the toilet handle sticks and it needs a little jiggle or you hear water running when the toilet is not flushed. It may seem like it is not a big issue but a running toilet can waste an incredible amount of water. Often the repair that is needed is quick and inexpensive. Fixing a running toilet should be a regular item on your plumbing maintenance checklist. *source: About.com Plumbing

LIVING A LEADER IN ROOFING EXCELLENCE - ARRY’S ROOFING One of the most important measures in life is having a roof over your head. When that roof has been built and/or repaired by Arry’s Roofing in Tarpon Springs, you can rest beneath it knowing it was constructed with the most solid quality and skillful workmanship. James “Arry” Housh, his wife, Becky, and sons, Stephen and Matthew, have taken their business to the top of the roofing industry, and have succeeded in provided an outstanding product for homes and businesses throughout the Tampa Bay Area for nearly a quarter century. Having earned the MasterElite status among only two percent of contractors in the entire nation, this separates them from other roofing companies in that the entire work force is skillfully trained on an ongoing basis, to construct, repair and replace roofs expertly and efficiently, using only the best materials on the market! This, once small, family-owned business has grown to become a leader in roofing excellence thanks to their dedication to customers and the relationships they have cultivated through their superior work ethic. “When we show up at a job, we don’t look at it as just another job, we look at it as a relationship,” Vice President, Matt Housh, explains. Arry continues, “My goal in business is to promote quality in workmanship and relationships. Once we perform work,

we stay in touch with our referral program. If our customers refer someone to us with a potential need, we compensate them with a gift card and discount any work for the potential customer.” With honesty, integrity and value, the MasterElite team at Arry’s Roofing will meet and exceed their customer’s expectations by installing and servicing any style of roof, be it metal, shingle or tile, and they offer a guarantee of their product under the Golden Pledge Warranty, the most substantive warranty in the roofing industry! Futhermore, each element of the Arry’s Roofing system is backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, which ultimately translates to complete customer loyalty and satisfaction. “We do a job professionally and with integrity, never compromising, protecting our reputation at all costs,” Matt said. “This allows us to stay on top in the business. We do more than just sell a roof. We put a protective and aesthetically pleasing cover on the most valuable asset most of our customers have, and we give them peace of mind, bringing them cleaner, better and safer products.” Arry’s Roofing is located at 770 Grosse Point in Tarpon Springs. Tips for Pricing Your Home •

Consider comparables. What have other homes in your neighborhood sold for recently? How do they compare to yours in terms of size, upkeep, and amenities?

Consider competition. How many other houses are for sale in your area? Are you competing against new homes?

Consider your contingencies. Do you have special concerns that would affect the price you’ll receive? For example, do you want to be able to move in four months?

Get an appraisal. For a few hundred dollars, a qualified appraiser can give you an estimate of your home’s value. Be sure to ask for a market-value appraisal. To locate appraisers in your area, contact The Appraisal Institute (www.appraisalinstitute.org) or ask your REALTOR® for some recommendations.

Ask a lender. Since most buyers will need a mortgage, it’s important that a home’s sale price be in line with a lender’s estimate of its value.

Be accurate. Studies show that homes priced more than 3 percent over the correct price take longer to sell.

Know what you’ll take. It’s critical to know what price you’ll accept before beginning a negotiation with a buyer.

TIPS 2012

BREAKING DOWN THE TAXPAYING POPULATION: WHERE DO YOU FIT IN? By: Todd Unbehagen, MAFM, EA, ATA, ATP, President, Unbehagen Advisors Every quarter, the Statistics of Income Division of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) publishes financial statistics obtained from tax and information returns that have been filed with the federal government. Recent reports reflect data gleaned from 2009 individual federal income tax returns. These reports offer a snapshot of how Americans break down as taxpayers.Sources for data: IRS

Statistics of Income Bulletin, Spring 2012 and Winter 2012, Washington, D.C.; IRS, Data on the 400 Individual Income Tax Returns Reporting the Largest Adjusted Gross Incomes, 2009 Update to Statistics of Income Bulletin, Spring 2003, Washington, D.C.

The big picture

Individuals filed roughly 140 million federal income tax returns for 2009. Of those returns, just under 82 million (approximately 58%) reported federal income tax greater than zero--representing the lowest percentage of taxable federal income tax returns in 24 years. Half of all the individual income tax returns filed showed adjusted gross income of under $32,396. (Adjusted gross income, or AGI, is basically total income less certain adjustments--e.g., deductible contributions to a traditional IRA.) As a whole, this bottom-50% group accounted for just 13.5% of the total AGI reported on all federal income tax returns. Put another way, 86.5% of AGI was concentrated in the top 50% of returns filed.

A look at the top What did it take in AGI to make the top 5% of all individual filers? Probably not as much as you think. If your return showed AGI of $154,643 or more, you would have been one of the almost 6.9 million filers comprising the top

5%. This group reported about $2.5 trillion in AGI--31.7% of the total AGI reported--and was responsible for 58.7% of the total income tax for the year. The roughly 1.3 million returns showing AGI of at least $343,927 made up the top 1% of all filers. This group reported 16.9% of total AGI; in other words, over $1.3 trillion of the $7.8 trillion in AGI reported was reported by the top 1% of filers. This group was responsible for 36.73% of the total income tax for the year. There were just under 138,000 tax returns with AGI exceeding $1.4 million. These returns, making up the top 0.1% of all filers (that’s the top one-tenth of one percent), accounted for approximately $610 billion in AGI (about 7.8% of all AGI), and paid just over 17% of the total income tax.

Not all high-income returns showed tax

There were just over 3.9 million returns filed with AGI of $200,000 or more. Of these returns, 20,752 (0.529%) showed no U.S. income tax liability. Why did these returns show no income tax? The IRS report that provided the data noted that high-income returns generally show no income tax as a result of a combination of factors, including deductions for charitable contributions, deductions for medical and dental expenses, and partnership and S corporation net losses.

Average tax rates

Simply dividing total income tax paid by total amount of AGI results in the following average federal income tax rates: •

Top 0.1%--Average federal income tax rate of 24.28%

Top 1%--Average federal income tax rate of 24.01%

Top 5%--Average federal income tax rate of 20.46%

Top 10%--Average federal income tax rate of 18.05%

Top 50%--Average federal income tax rate of 12.5%

1) With a 20% down payment, a 15-year fixed-rate loan for $100,000 with a rate of 4.50%(4.669% APR) would be repaid in 180 payments (principal and interest) of $765 each. 2) With a 20% down payment, a 3/3 adjustable rate mortgage for $100,000 with an introductory rate of 4.00% would be repaid for the first 36 months in payments (principal and interest) of $478 each. (APR after the 36 month introductory period will be variable and may be subject to increase). Variable APRs shown are the best available for the initial fixed rate period of 3 or 5 years only. After the initial fixed-rate period, your variable APR will be based on the movement of the Treasury Security Index for a comparable maturity as the ARM program selected plus a margin determined by your credit qualification. Your qualifying margin over the index is determined at the time you lock-in your final rate. The variable rate and APR may adjust up or down with a CAP limitation not to exceed 2% for any one change. The maximum increase or decrease in percentage points for the term of the loan is 6%. However, the rate on your loan will never decrease lower than the margin. A change cannot occur more than once every 36 months for the 3/3 ARM and once every 60 months for the 5/5 ARM. An increase in rate would represent an increase of your monthly payments. Property insurance is required.

events Public Safety…Not Politics Everyone has a story showing the unique challenges and victories helping to shape and define a person’s character. From early beginnings to defining moments, we see the essence and substance of an individual in their personal journey. In my life, I have found inspiration and kindness in the lives of others who have contributed to who I have become as a son, brother, father, husband, grandfather and law enforcement professional. As a son who grew up in a single-parent home with five siblings, I understand challenges of having to shoulder early responsibility. I know the struggles my mother faced and have a special compassion for those rising to the challenge of raising children on limited resources. As a young man, I was grateful to the individuals who, at just the right time, were the help and encouragement I needed. There were individuals like Mr. Bidleman, my high school principal, who did not give up on me and believed that I could succeed regardless of my home life. I remember Good Samaritans like the heart surgeon who gave me a few dollars to fix my car so I could begin a new chapter in my life. It is because of individuals like Dr. L.G. Baker, my pastor, that I could envision myself as one who could serve my fellow man with honor and integrity. And I’ll never forget men like my Uncle Paul, a career Tampa Police Officer, whose life and service inspired me to pursue a career in law enforcement.

The Roaring Rotary 20's Gala presented by The Rotary Club of Trinity

The “Roaring Rotary 20’s” event captivated guests by taking them back to the era of prosperity and speakeasies. Wearing the best flapper dresses or pin-striped suits and fedora, guests spent the evening dining and dancing the Charleston and other steps as they enjoyed the wide repertoire of jazz and modern music performed by Hologram. The Rotary Club of Trinity’s mission is to make a positive difference in the health, education, and welfare of the lives of children in our community first and then beyond our region. The proceeds will be used to support children’s organizations, such as Pace Center for Girls, Pasco Kids First, and Youth and Family Alternatives in Pasco County.

Bienvenidos Amigos to Carmelita’s Mexican Restaurant: Excellente! Having taken the reigns from the Lopez family who opened their first Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant in Pinellas County in 1983, current owners of Carmelita’s Mexican Restaurant, Jose Salazar, Jr., and Karla Salazar, are still just as committed to serving only the finest & freshest Mexican & TexMex food Pasco County has to offer! With more than 20 years experience in the hospitality & restaurant industries, Jose still takes great pride and pleasure in the reactions of his satisfied customers, many of whom are regulars to Carmelita’s! Their menu is filled with an array of authentic dishes including customer favorites: the Chicken Enchiladas and the Del Rey Burrito. However, Jose’s favorite, and what he considers the best dish he’s ever created remains his Chile Rellenos. His idea of the ultimate feast is the Carne Asada combination platter which includes Chile Rellenos, Spinach Enchiladas, Grilled Skirt Steak and two sides. Carmelita’s other crowd pleasers include a wide variety of combo platters, so you can experience an array of flavors from the Southwest! Of course, all of your Mexican/Tex-Mex classics are available on the menu: tacos, burritos, tamales, carnitas and more! Additionally, a trip to Carmelita’s should always include their celebrated chips & salsa, which always leave you wanting more, coupled with a magnificent margarita or homemade sangria to wash it down! Each and every day, Carmelita’s prepares each dish with only the freshest ingredients. “I have full control of the vendors we buy from, meaning I can buy from chain companies or local businesses to keep up with freshness and quality,” Jose explains. The suppliers Jose works with on a regular basis must maintain a good reputation for quality and freshness, with competitive pricing. He always tries to buy produce, dairy, poultry and meat from local businesses in the community.

Furthermore, the Salazar’s support not only local grocers, but local churches, schools, non-profit organizations and charitable events as a means of giving back to those who have supported their family and their restaurant! Jose consistently delivers Carmelita’s customers with a fun, friendly ambiance, excellent customer service, and delicious Mexican cuisine served in appetizing presentations. The Salazar’s and staff of Carmelita’s believe in their product and are dedicated to doing their very best to satisfy their many customers through quality food and outstanding service! Carmelita’s is located at 8526 Old CR 54 in New Port Richey, with hours Sunday-Thursday from 11:00 AM-9:30 PM, Fridays & Saturdays, 11:00 AM-10:00 PM. Visit their website at www. Carmelitas.net or call 727-376-4800, for more information.

Prime Time Post Apocalypse Continues With

REVOLUTION NBC ‘s latest offering premiered twice this week, on both Monday and Wednesday, to make sure viewers don’t miss it. With hundreds of other channels competing for your attention it is not a bad move. I missed Monday night’s show, caught most of it last night and picked up what I missed on the internet. For anyone who has trouble programming a DVR, shows on the internet and crisp and nearly commercial free. Revolution is the latest in a trend of post apocalyptic scenarios that have started to dominate the landscape of prime time scripted drama. The world without electricity fifteen years after the lights go out becomes a bleak existence where cars are transformed back into horse drawn buggies, bad men are at every turn and militia groups rule with leather fists. For all the violence and slaughter there is surprisingly little blood and killings are taken with nonchalance as the typical routine of daily life. Jon Favreau directs action sequences to pack substance into a few moments. Since his debut with Swingers he has grown into the Hollywood heavyweight who helmed Cowboys and Aliens and the Iron Man features. On TV he is obviously weighted by NBC practice and standards which delivers a softer view of the world portrayed. If this were HBO or Showtime, even AMC, it would be much dirtier and realistic.

The plot surrounds a girl who chases after her brother who is captured by militia men and employs her uncle, a weary badass bartender who doesn’t want to get involved but mechanically kills 20 men to protect himself and his niece. Based in Chicago, the production uses every worn out backlot set to create a vision of decay. This is the best thing about the show. But most intriguing is the woman with a key that turns on a light bulb and an arcane computer that lets her text with somebody. A key that an ex-Google millionaire carries with him, unaware of its power. JJ Abrams Bad Robot is the production house behind this series and as with Lost and Fringe, they leave you with damaging cliff-hangers that force you to come back for more. Six shows have been programmed but this one is going to have to get to the point quicker if they want to maintain an audience. Another calamity driven show, ABCs Flash Forward, did nothing but compound questions without enough exposition and viewers switched off. This is another show that is going to try and be the next LOST and it is not going to happen. The long term sustainability of this show has to rely on strong performances not just a bunch of what-ifs? Producers would be wise to introduce shows like this as mini-series with the sleeved ace of being able to expand on it if the audience

Other world end dramas soon to return are AMCs The Walking Dead, a fine adaptation of the graphic novellas and TNTs Falling Skies, where aliens are filthier and more sinister than those in ABCs V. Walking Dead’s ongoing drama and stress of zombies is more realistic than any aliens I see on TV. Of all the what-if scenarios, this is the one to watch. Mike Rembis is an avid TV watcher and the Director of Tampa Bay International Film Festival. TampaBayFilmFest.com

begs for it. The last really great miniseries were all Stephen King adaptations; Golden Years, The Langoliers, Tommyknockers and The Stand. Not all TV writers are Stephen King of course, but every know and then a bit of brilliance bubbles to the surface. Awake went to sleep after 13 episodes last year and will not be revived. It was a brilliant program about a man in a coma/nightmare he couldn’t wake up from. The series ended with his true awakening and provided closure for all viewers. While this was a wise move to cap the series, more viewers would have jumped on if touted as a mini-series instead of a new series. If a new series doesn’t grab somebody right from the start, the idea is that one night, they’ll pick it up eventually.

5th Annual Barktoberfest will be a Tail-Waggin Good Time! Looking for something fun to do this October with your fur-kids? Paw Wash Plus will host their 5th Annual Barktoberfest Pet Charity Event on Sunday, October 28 at Harley Davidson of New Port Richey to benefit SPCA Suncoast. Visitors, both two-and four-legged, are invited to join in the festivities starting at 11 a.m. and the fun will be nonstop from start to spectacular finish. Kim Crane and Diane Clokey, owners of Paw Wash Plus, really know how to throw a pet-friendly bash! “Four years ago this event started out as a small fundraiser in the parking lot of our shop. We just thought it would give our costumers a pet friendly event to come to while raising a little money for charity.” Says Kim. “After the 3rd annual Barktoberfest we knew it was too big to have at our location any longer and we began looking for a bigger venue”. That’s where Harley Davidson stepped in; they have been

big supporters of SPCA Suncoast and offered to let Paw Wash Plus use their location for future Barktoberfest events. “The more we can spread the word about these wonderful rescue groups and all they do for these animals, the easier it will be for them to accomplish their goals of getting forever-homes for animals in need. These volunteers put so much time and effort into the causes that they believe in and we are just honored and proud to be a part of that community,” explains Kim. Vendors will be plentiful and will offer everything from beauty products to pet accessories. The Treble Hooks will be bringing their brand of Florida Soul Shine to Barktoberfest this year! That's right.... this year for the first time Barktoberfest will have a live band playing eclectic covers in the

traditional style of blues, folk, country, and rock with a southern soulful boogie woogie sound. The height of entertainment, though, will be the fur-filled costume contest that grows bigger and bigger each year. Paw Wash Plus has seven different costume categories to enter your pooch in: Best Biker Dog, Cutest Dog, Diva Dog, Most Original, Spookiest Dog, Pet/Owner Look Alike & Best Overall. Last year there were a record number of 59 dressed up pooches entered into the contest and each winner was awarded a trophy and winners bag with gifts worth about $50. This year they offered local businesses the opportunity to sponsor the contests and have their business names engraved on the trophies. . There will be food, games, music, photography, a bouncy house for the kids and let’s not forget the dogs…a tail-waggin good time for all!

Fall Safety Tips for Dogs

Fall has finally arrived, and we bet you can’t wait to get out and enjoy the crisp air and crunchy leaves with your fluffy companion! There are plenty of fun activities to partake in with your pup, but before you do, it’s time for some quick fall safety tips for dogs. Heed these warnings to avoid doggy discomfort and a stressful season. • Check for fleas and ticks! When outdoor playtime is over, inspect your dog thoroughly for fleas and ticks. Also, follow your vet’s advice regarding flea, tick, and heartworm preventives. • Be aware of allergies! While this time of the year offers a comfortable climate for dogs, it also brings uncomfortable allergic reactions for some. Ragweed and mold spores lurk in leaf piles, so be sure to rake and dispose of leaves. If your dog can’t stop scratching, you may need to get an oral antihistamine or medicated shampoo from the vet.

• Hike with caution! Hiking is a wonderful opportunity for you and your dog to enjoy nature’s beauty and spend some quality time together. It is important, however, to take note of any harmful plants, like poison ivy, and potentially dangerous animals, like snakes. In addition, wash any cuts with warm water and apply Nov 10 11am -7pm antibiotic ointment. If the cut is deep, visit the vet. 5th Annual Dogtoberfest
