HOMETOWN STORY
Continues to Achieve Amazing Balance in Her Life Personally and Professionally She may be wife, mother, businesswoman, and “new empty-nester,” but her email name seems to say it all: Amandaonthego!
A
manda Murphy loves her family, her friends, her community and her profession as the Vice President of Investments at her Raymond James office in Tampa. As a fullservice financial advisor, her position allows her the opportunity to help people. Amanda assists her clients with CDs, Bonds, Annuities, Equities, Life Insurance, as well as other investment products. Moreover, she will be the first to tell you, size doesn’t matter. “I am concerned about all of my clients. Account size should not make one person more important than another. Everyone deserves the same help, and I give that.” If only she had more time with her husband, who travels north every week, and their friends, who they attempt to see most every weekend. It simply means the time they do share together becomes more precious and a priority of great proportion! Aside from helping her clients, there are so many people in the Pasco/Pinellas community Amanda helps. This requires a great deal of time for her volunteer efforts. “I have a hard time saying no. God has blessed me and I feel it is my responsibility to help others who are in need.” And that she does… Amanda is involved in the Trinity Rotary Club, a group that focuses on helping local children. “This group is always looking for ways to help the children throughout West Pasco,” Amanda boasts. She joined the Community Service Council after she had so much fun attending their Bachelor Auction. “When I learned how they give back to so many organizations, give scholarships and feed needy families at Thanksgiving, I had to become a part of such a wonderful group. Now I am Chair of the Bachelor Auction, and can’t wait for this year’s event!
organization work diligently to find ways to assist other non-profits in the area. “I have enjoyed the volunteer opportunities they have given me. They are truly a dynamic group.” The PACE Center for Girls is a group close to her heart. “The work that this organization does to help young women is a huge benefit to our community. PACE changes young lives,” she explains. The Youth & Family Alternatives Runaway Shelter has a fundraising effort each year known as RAP River Run. Over the last five years, a group of volunteers, including Amanda, have grown a 5k race from just over 400 participants, to more than 1000 runners! The money raised goes directly to the Runaway Shelter. Leadership Pasco was a means for Amanda to learn more about Pasco County, and she has! Last, but certainly not least, Amanda has volunteered with the Chasco Fiesta Coronation Planning Committee. “This has given me an opportunity to help raise money for the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind.” All of this, and she carves out time three days a week to work out with a friend at 5:30 AM, at a boot camp known as Hammertime! With the many hats she wears and the juggling of her time, Amanda has achieved amazing balance in her life between family, friends, work and community. She exemplifies what it means to pay it forward and give back. Amanda adds humbly, “I am in good company. Our community works together, and it is wonderful to see so many people who are willing to lend a hand. I am so blessed to know so many wonderful, caring people.”
Although new to the Junior Service League, Amanda’s definitely “having a blast!” The ladies involved in this

eed some ideas on what to get your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day? We’ve got you covered with great gift ideas from some of our favorite businesses, shops and restaurants around town. If every family in the Tampa Bay area spent just $100 of their Valentine’s Day budget at locally-owned, independent businesses, over $74,215,744* would be directly returned to the Tampa Bay community. That means better schools, better roads, more support for police, fire and rescue departments and stronger local economies. *Based on Civic Economics Andersonville Study of Retail Economics: When you spend $100 at an independent business, $68 returns to the local economy versus $43 when spent with a national chain. Based on U.S. Census projection of 115 million households. IT’s YOUR HOME Magazine is the #1 source for local business information in South Pasco and Northern Pinellas Counties. As you flip through the magazine in print and online, you will meet many of the hometown professionals throughout our community.
Follow us on Facebook, Twitter & Google+1. Visit our website to find a business, stay abreast of upcoming events, find information about buying or selling your home or get some great decorating ideas. We have something for everyone! Our magazine is sponsored by the local business owners in the area. Our passion is our true commitment to local business ownership. We believe in the power of local businesses which support our local economy. Michael H. Schuman, author of Going Local, writes, “Going local does not mean walling off the outside world. It means nurturing locally owned businesses, which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs.” Thank a local business owner for supporting our community, we know all of them appreciate your support and they Thank You!

The Symbol
of Love Love has the power to heal all wounds, love defines our existence, love is a Diamond in a Pearl
When an oyster swallows a grain of sand it feels the discomfort, so it begins to ease the pain by applying a coat of nacre (pearl). It is during this healing process that it creates a beautiful pearl. It is rather ironic to think that something so beautiful can be created out of so much discomfort. This is like life itself. It is easy to love in good times, but it takes courage to love through the discomfort of our lives. The diamond represents the grain of sand and the pearl evokes an aura of courage, love, and healing that is embedded deep within the soul. It is this unique transformation that has given birth to “Diamond in a Pearl “…the symbol of love.
Life is a Gift Today before you think of saying an unkind word Think of someone who can't speak. Before you complain about the taste of your food Think of someone who has nothing to eat. Before you complain about your husband or wife Think of someone who's crying out to God for a companion. Today before you complain about life Think of someone who went too early to heaven. Before you complain about your children Think of someone who desires children but they're barren. Before you argue about who cleans up your dirty house Think of the people who are living in the streets. Before whining about the distance you drive Think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet. And when you are tired and complain about your job Think of the unemployed, the disabled and those who wished they had your job.

A Little Pampering
Paraffin Wax for Hands and Feet
Y
The Elements of Beauty YOU…A Work Of Art WE…The Artists
Together We Create
ou may already be familiar with paraffin wax treatments at our local spas -- it's a luxurious addition to a manicure at your local nail salon, spa or even when you visit your local dentistry spa.
A Masterpiece
Give the gift of love...together Couple Massages only $140.00
When paraffin wax baths are offered as a service at a spa or nail salon, the hands or feet are typically dipped into a tub of warm paraffin wax -- often two or three times -- to create a thick coating that will retain heat for several minutes. As the wax hardens, the paraffin's natural emollient softens skin and the heat opens pores. When the cooled wax is pulled away from the skin, it also removes dead skin cells, leaving skin smoother. Paraffin wax treatments are also beneficial to dry cracked hands and feet. Paraffin is an excellent moisturizer because it forms a light waterproof coating over your skin that helps it retain the oils produced by your body. This "waterproofing" makes paraffin treatments great for soothing and healing dry, cracked skin -- particularly winter-worn hands and feet -because it offers protection from external elements.

There’s a First Time for Everything! A Local Makeover Story
I
have a funny story for you. One day while sitting with a friend I mentioned that I really needed a massage. She replied, “Oh, do those help your back?” I said “Are you kidding, they help everything!” That’s when she said it… “I’ve never had a massage.” I was perplexed. Massages decrease stress, release toxins, and they feel amazing!!

After
Upon further exploration, I discovered that Melissa had never experienced a facial, a pedicure, a manicure, eyebrow wax, or microdermabrasion. Now I know that there are lots of people who have never been blessed to have experienced these luxuries, but I decided that Melissa was going to get a total makeover treat! She is such a worthy recipient: a mother of three teenage boys, tireless worker for a non-profit, and an amazing woman of integrity. I thought she would be the perfect candidate for these amazing treatments. I turned to some local businesses to help me out, and they very generously donated to this pampering makeover. It started with Dr. David Dempsey, the Art and Science of Dentistry, a phenomenal dentist and personal friend. He repaired two cracks in Melissa’s front teeth beautifully to compliment her smile. Then Melissa was off for her very first full set of acrylic nails, a pedicure, and an eyebrow wax. Billy at Trinity Nail Spa applied a French acrylic nail set, performed a spa pedicure with leg scrub and massage, and perfectly shaped her eye brows to frame her rich brown eyes. Next it was off to see Dr. Cara Hacht, owner of A Family Affair Chiropractic Center, a wonderful friend and an amazing chiropractor. There, Melissa received a deep tissue massage and posture screening. Melissa loved her massage and might now be addicted!
Before
A pampering facial was next, with a special microdermabrasion treatment at Carson Aesthetic Care Center & Medi-Spa. Theresa Frazier took care of Melissa every step of the way! She received a customized skin care facial and microdermabrasion treatment to reduce fine lines. The results were fabulous! Finally, hair, fitness, and make-up! Stylez of Trinity gave Melissa a new trendy cut, auburn color to compliment her skin tone, and some fun highlights to match her personality! My dear friend, owner of Stylez, Sherrie Shillingford, also runs a Faith & Fitness program and she generously donated a one-month supply of a meal replacement drink to help kick off Melissa’s fitness goals for the New Year! No make-over is complete without customized make-up to complement bone structure, eye shape, and skin tone. I primed Melissa’s skin, added a perfectly matched foundation, mineral eye/cheek colors, mascara, and a few more fabulous Mary Kay products, which has been my personal brand of choice for 16 years. WOW…what an event for Melissa! I can tell you that she very humbly and graciously thanks david w. dempsey, d.d.s. each and every one of the service providers she met. She feels like a new woman! Thank you to the art and of for dentistry everyone for making this an experience of ascience lifetime Melissa!

What is Red-Light Therapy?
R
ed light therapy is a healing strategy that makes use of red tinted light in order to stimulate the body’s natural defense systems and bring relief from various ailments. It’s popularity has boomed with Planet Beach’s Contempo Spa visitors because it produces fast results for people with a variety of skin issues. Planet Beach’s Lumiere facial has been popular since its introduction and now we are adding full-body red-light beds. In some cases, it is even possible to convert UV-therapy beds to red light therapy. Red light therapy uses heat and concentrated light to stimulate circulation, boost collagen production and enhance skin’s natural ability to heal. For Contempo Spa members, it can produce dramatic results in just a few visits. The Lumiere facial and full body red light beds have become the most sought-after services at Planet Beach Contempo Spas as a result. It is non-invasive treatment and does not contain ultraviolet rays. Waves from the infrared spectrum to penetrate skin tissue to a depth of up to 10 millimeters. This extra energy helps skin cells

increase production of new collagen and enhance turnover of collagen and elastin fibers – key components for skin renewal. Red light acne therapy helps teens with skin problems, by helping to clear out clogged pores. Facial red light therapy helps with nervous tics. In the same way natural sunlight helps with mild depression, red light sessions can improve moods and diminish depression in the winter months. If that were not enough, there are even claims that the stimulation of ATP in the body can help with various forms of sexual dysfunction in both men and women. Adding the full-body option the range of health and wellness services already available cements Planet Beach Contempo Spas as an industry leader and innovator. Existing franchise owners can convert UV tanning equipment to red-light therapy, and the benefits of the red light therapy bulbs include reducing fine lines and wrinkles, improving moisture and reducing imperfections. Red-light therapy beds also will be one of eight standard offerings at the new UV Free Contempo Spa, a smaller version of a full Contempo Spa. Both sized spas give members unlimited access to health and wellness treatments for a modest monthly fee. Courtesy of Planet Beach

Strollin’… Strollin’… Strollin’ on the Sponge Docks
T
he sky is crystal clear, as blue as can be with no visible clouds. A light breeze has palm fronds whispering all around. The sun is shining so bright, its warmth so enveloping a nice stroll along the World Famous Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks is in order! The Riverside Venue and rooftop Veranda are preparing to reopen soon. What a lovely location with so much history as the former Pappas Restaurant. The Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center is abuzz with tourists seeking more information about the area. There are several new businesses on the Sponge Docks. Tula has opened Yia Ma’s Martini Bar next to the Sponge Factory, It is beautiful and sophisticated. A new restaurant, Pappas Fish Market, has taken the place of the Blue Fin Café located right across the street from Simone’s Gift Shop. Hmmm…shopping! Claudia and her Mother, Begnner, refer to their shop as “The Happy Store,” and these women are two of the sweetest, kindest people on Earth. The unique gift offerings at Simone’s are suitable for just about anyone on a gift list! For those more macho gift recipients, a trip to Boot Hide Out in the Riverwalk shopping area

is perfect. They have thousands of boots, leather jackets, handbags, purses and accessories. Nice! On the way to Boot Hide Out, there is no possible way to pass up shopping at the many wonderful shops in The Sponge Exchange. Especially Five Fish, a trilogy of shops, featuring Life is Good, Brighton, Vera Bradley, Pandora and so many others. Yet, it would not be a trip to the Sponge Docks without catching a glimpse of the boats cruising on the Anclote River. A fishing vessel, Julie Ann , has just returned to her dock at family-owned, Rusty Bellies Restaurant and Pelican Seafood. The Viking Gulfstar is heading out on a fishing charter with some very happy passengers. Mmmm… fresh seafood! Will it be classic Greek at Mykonos, or “A New Greek Experience” at Dimitri’s? It will be Dimitri’s on the Water. The food is phenomenal, with the freshest seafood caught locally from some of Tarpon Springs’ veteran fishermen. Dimitri buys everything he can find locally. But it’s not just the food, but the mere opportunity to dine on the water that captures the real feeling of living in paradise!

Simple Stress Busters 1. Watch for the next instance in which you find yourself becoming
annoyed or angry at something trivial or unimportant. Then practice letting go, making a conscious choice not to become angry or upset. Do not allow yourself to waste thought and energy where it isn't deserved. Effective anger management is a tried-and-true stress reducer.
2. Breathe slowly and deeply. Before reacting to the next stressful
occurrence, take three deep breaths and release them slowly. If you have a few minutes, try out a relaxation technique such Jump-start an effective time management strategy. Choose one simple thing you have been putting off (e.g., returning a phone call, making a doctor's appointment), and do it immediately. Just taking care of one nagging responsibility can be energizing and can improve your attitude.
3. Get outdoors for a brief break. Our grandparents were right about the healing power of fresh air. Don't be deterred by foul weather or a full schedule. Even five minutes on a balcony or terrace can be rejuvenating. Even better, go for a walk!
4. Drink plenty of water and eat small, nutritious snacks. Hunger
and dehydration, even before you're aware of them, can provoke aggressiveness and exacerbate feelings of anxiety and stress.
Your Healthy Weight is 80% NUTRITION and 20% Exercise
You Cannot Out-Train a Bad Diet
M
ost Americans know that a healthy diet and exercise are the ideal combination for weight loss and lowers risk of chronic diseases. Knowledge without action is futile – and America is encountering a major health crisis as a result of our complacency. According to a recent study by the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), only one in seven American adults gets regular physical activity and consumes five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other health problems are at an all-time high because so few of us incorporate both a healthy diet AND exercise into our lifestyles. So why do so few take the action to live a lifestyle that would allow them to live in full VITALITY? Perhaps it’s because they see it as an overwhelming task to change their lifestyle overnight. What is the solution to the overwhelm? Start with small changes, and increase them gradually. You will get the best results by combining a healthy weight loss diet plan with regular, moderate exercise that includes cardio and strength training. You don’t have to become a total health nut or live on salads and Jello. In fact, a very low calorie diet can do
By Melanie Milletics
more harm than good, depleting your muscle and leaving your metabolism worse off than before. Instead, choose a nutrient dense program that fits your lifestyle, and incorporate exercise into your week. Be careful and start slow – no need to be an athlete; walking, biking or gym cardio machines are fine, combined with muscle strengthening activities a couple of days a week. Start slowly and gradually increase to 45 minutes of activity a day, more if you are able. A slimmer, healthy body is the result of a healthy diet and regular exercise – but it can also improve your mood, boost energy, promote better sleep and enhance your sex life. Exercise can also improve mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative moods and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. Dieting alone may provide short-term weight-loss results. Exercising without supporting your body with a healthy diet can lead to health problems. For a winning combination, incorporate a healthy weight loss diet with regular physical activity. Make these two vital components a permanent part of your lifestyle, and watch every aspect of your life improve!

DEFY AGING
The Master Journey & Divine Intelligence of the Heart
A
s we begin a new year, many of us take a look at how to improve ourselves by setting resolutions to live a healthier, happier, and more prosperous life. For Dennis & I, our search continues to be fulfilled with grateful abundance! Our “Master Journey” was conceived, received, and manifested from heartfelt prayer, and was delivered in the form of words, phrases and other phenomena, somewhat clue-like, from “Divine Intelligence,” and through living and loving life! The main thought provoking clue was not unfamiliar, and reinforced the premise we had to live: “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.” Learning the lessons to be learned, we have mastered areas of our life path and experience, moving forward only to keep doing it again, and again.
Many “AHA” moments to be discovered, it was up to us to uncover the divine clues as if we were involved in a scavenger hunt. We had to wait for the clues when they were ready to reveal themselves. These clues would reveal themselves during very unexpected moments over time, until the pieces were coming together for us to share. It’s what we call “The Golden Seven Principles.” These principles are essential to mastering our lives through “Master Key Codes,” creating a master mind in its simplest and easiest to understand form, all stemming from the “Divine Intelligence” of the heart! It was THEN and WHEN our spirits were awakened with these miracles of enlightenment! One of the areas we love to share, that serves as a great reminder to everyone and should be constantly revisited as part of the amazing wisdom of the ages, is “The Seven Virtues,” as defined by Pope Gregory: FAITH HOPE CHARITY FORTITUDE JUSTICE PRUDENCE TEMPERENCE
is believe in the right things (including the virtues) is taking a positive future view that good will prevail is concern for, and active help to others is never giving up. is being fair and equitable with others is care of and moderation with money is moderation of needed things and abstinence from things not needed
When we make the time for self discovery, personal growth, and development, it is pretty amazing what transformations and revelations take place! The “Divine Intelligence” of the heart is the answer and the main “Master Key Code” that allows us to tap into the knowledge, intuitiveness, and knowingness, we are beautiful treasures. Here is how we “master shift” the heart: Take a few slow deep breaths, shift your focus on your heart. Recall a positive fun feeling, a loved one, a special grand time in your life, and ask your heart for the response you need. LISTEN to your heart. It is ALWAYS correct!

n unlicensed contractor is someone who does repairs or makes improvements to your home without the appropriate license to do business in your state. Typically, unlicensed contractors work for less than licensed contractors because they avoid worker's compensation and liability insurance requirements. According to Florida Statute 455.228, if you hire an unlicensed contractor, the Department of Professional Regulations (D.P.R.) may issue a cease and desist order and also may take you to Circuit Court, which has the authority to impose a civil penalty of up to $5,000 for aiding and assisting unlicensed activity. You could also be liable for court cost. • If you pull a permit for an unlicensed contractor, you are held responsible for the work, not the contractor. • If you hire an unlicensed contractor, you may actually pay more for the job, than if you hired a licensed contractor. Especially, if the work is done incorrectly or never finished, you may have to pay twice or more for the same job to be corrected or finished. • If the unlicensed contractor fails to pay his sub-contractors or suppliers, you may be required to pay them, even though you have already paid the contractor.
TIP OF THE MONTH
Watch out for unlicensed contractors. Unlicensed contractors cost homeowners thousands of dollars in unnecessary repairs. Go with a contractor you can trust. Call McWilliams to get the job done right the first time.

Duct Cleaning Can Be a Waste of Money

lthough there are certain occasions where cleaning your duct system can be beneficial, more times than not, it can even be counterproductive. Consider, if your ducts really are dirty, what caused it in the first place. If you don’t remove the cause, the problem will present itself over and over again.

Instead, have a product installed called the Air Oasis that is installed in your AC system that continuously cleans and sanitizes your air conditioning & duct system and your home when the AC fan is running. For about the same cost as getting your ducts cleaned properly, you can have the Air Oasis installed and always have cleaner air and a better indoor environment. The science is easy to understand, the cost is extremely reasonable and it comes with a money back guarantee. Call Best Services A/C for more information at 727-773-0151. Chicken Piccata Pasta
Creamy and lemony, this dish is a fresh take on piccata and is made in a fraction of the time!
Ingredients 1¼ 2 1½ 3
lbs (625 g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts tbsp (30 mL) olive oil, divided tbsp (22 mL) Lemon Pepper Rub cans (14.5 oz each) 33% reduced-sodium chicken broth (about 6 cups/1.5 L) ½ medium onion 12 oz (350 g) uncooked angel hair pasta
1 2 1
lemon oz (60 g) cream cheese, softened can (14 oz or 398 mL) quartered artichoke hearts in water, drained ¼ cup (50 mL) capers, drained and rinsed Chopped fresh parsley and grated fresh Parmesan cheese (optional)
1. Cut chicken into 1-in. (2.5-cm) pieces on Cutting Board. Combine chicken, 1 tbsp (15 mL) of the oil and rub in Stainless (4-qt./4-L) Mixing Bowl; toss to coat. Heat remaining oil in (12-in./30-cm) Skillet over medium-high heat 1–3 minutes or until shimmering. Add chicken to Skillet; cook and stir 10 minutes or until chicken is golden brown and centers are no longer pink. Remove chicken from Skillet; set aside. 2. Meanwhile, pour broth into Large Micro-Cooker®; microwave, covered, on HIGH 8–10 minutes or until broth comes to a boil. On clean cutting board, chop onion using Food Chopper. Add onion to Skillet; cook 10–20 seconds or until onion is fragrant. Carefully add broth and pasta to Skillet; cook, uncovered, 7–8 minutes or until pasta is tender, stirring occasionally. 3. Zest lemon with Microplane® Adjustable Grater to measure 1 tbsp (15 mL). Juice lemon with Juicer to measure 2 tbsp (30 mL). Add zest, juice and cream cheese to Skillet; stir until cream cheese is fully incorporated. Add chicken and artichokes to Skillet. Cook, covered, 1–2 minutes or until heated through. A New Greek Experience, “Only the love of food can lead you here.”
Chef Demetrios Salivaras
of
Dimitri’s
on the water
By Debra Taylor
H
is trademark: “Only the love of food can lead you here.” His vision: “To give my guests an experience or journey through food and atmosphere.”
Demetrios Salivaras, of Dimitri’s on the Water, located on the World Famous Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, is all about making his guests feel at home. He is all about family, flavorful food and fabulous ambience! Dimitri has had a fascinating life as a Chef, beginning as an intern in Hawaii and moving to California to learn how to harvest and cultivate grapes for the “crushing season” of the West Coast wine industry in 2005. It was there he learned the process of winemaking and obtained an extensive education, thanks to the Culinary Institute of America, from which he earned his degree. Dimitri was adamant about coupling wines and food. “It’s not just about pairing wines with food, but bridging them. For example, for roasted pork or beef, you might choose to cook with a certain wine you would drink like a Merlot. That’s actually the bridge to the wine chosen to pair with the dish itself.” Dimitri was very excited about his new wine list coming out in a few weeks, which he will be pairing and bridging! His father, Andreas, and his late Mother, Renee, taught him to work hard and work smart, respectively. His father came to America as an immigrant without even knowing the English language. However, he worked very hard as a Greek Chef to make a living for his family. Meanwhile, his Mom kept charge of the children and the books. It was his mother, Renee, who encouraged him to purchase his restaurant. It was her dream for him that kept his dream alive! There is never a moment when family is not a part of Dimitri’s daily operations. It’s all about family & home!
Dimitri wants nothing more than his guests to be satisfied and excited about their experience. “I want to emulate the feel of home. I want people to feel like they’re at their home away from home. We strive to be on a first name basis with our guests, and will always work hard to exceed their expectations with cleanliness, quality, consistency and value. We are on stage here for our guests, and we want to present an excellent performance every night so our guests want to return again and again.” Dimitri’s favorite dish to prepare is braised lamb or any kind of seafood. However, he is not a fan of heavy spices when it comes to any dish. “Less is more. You can season a fish until you don’t even know what the fish tastes like. I could give you a spoon full of spices for the same effect. You should have a savory seafood experience without overpowering with heavy spices, which is how we prepare our fish,” Dimitri explains. This Executive Chef is all about buying local, too. Dimitri purchases all of his food products locally: fruits, vegetables, and seafood. “If we can find it produced locally, we buy local. It’s important that we sustain the local farmers and fish mongers to keep monies in our own communities, which, in turn, keeps our locals in business. I will not buy special from Peru or Chile, because we don’t have it here. I will purchase what is in season here. Moreover, ”If You Hook It, We’ll Cook It!”…now that’s fresh! ”I love this community because of the Greek culture that exists. I love that everyone knows everyone. We truly do live in paradise here in Tarpon Springs,” he said. Dimitri’s on the water is located at 690 Dodecanese Blvd. in the World Famous Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. You can also dock your boat and dine waterside. To make reservations for any size party, or for catering information, please call 727-945-9400.

ONLINE SAFETY ISSUES FOR CHILDREN CYBERBULLYING! SANDRA TESTO-MICHAUD
W
hat is Cyberbullying????? “Cyberbullying” is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones.
Sandra@ForTheLocalBusiness.com
Believe it or not….. Cyberbullying is a problem that affects almost half of all American teens. Whether you’ve been a victim of cyberbullying, know someone who has been cyberbullied, or have even cyberbullied yourself. Children have killed each other and committed suicide after having been involved in a cyberbullying incident.
www.KatelynFoundation.org In honor of her daughter Katelyn, The Katelyn Foundation is a non-profit organization providing swim lessons to children throughout Tampa Bay. “Learning how to swim is a necessity, not a luxury!”
Check out the following resources to learn more about preventing cyberbullying:
www.ncpc.org www.stopcyberbullying.org www.stopbullyingnow.com And Remember…..BE SAFE! BE SMART! HAVE FUN ONLINE!
Cyberbullying is usually not a one time communication, unless it involves a death threat or a credible threat of serious bodily harm. Kids usually know it when they see it, while parents may be more worried about the lewd language used by the kids than the hurtful effect of rude and embarrassing posts. Like most teenagers, they spend a lot of time on a cell phone or instant messenger chatting with friends and uploading photos, videos, and music to websites. They may have online friends whom you’ve never met in person, with whom they play games and exchange messages. Teens’ lives exist in a variety of places such as school hallways, part-time jobs, and friends’ houses. Now many teens also have lives on the Internet. And bullying has followed teens online.
There are steps PARENTS, CHILDREN and THEIR FRIENDS can take to stop cyberbullying and stay cyber-safe. Below are a few ways a teen is cyberbullied by another teen: • Pretend they are other people online to trick others • Spread lies and rumors about victims • Trick people into revealing personal information • Send or forward mean text messages • Post pictures of victims without their consent According to the National Crime Prevention Council teens are fighting back, below are a few ways teens and parents can stop the cyberbullying: • Refuse to pass along cyberbullying messages • Tell friends to stop cyberbullying • Block communication with cyberbullies • Report cyberbullying to a trusted adult • Parents should always monitor their teen online. NEVER forget that even though you can’t see a cyberbully or the bully’s victim, cyberbullying causes real problems. If you wouldn’t say it in person, don’t say it online. Delete cyberbullying. Don’t write it. Don’t forward it. www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Love Your Pet!
P
By Gail Armstrong
ets are part of our families. They add extra love to our homes and joy to our lives. We all want to reward our pets for their devotion to us but we don’t always realize what a reward can be. Most of us know that petting and treats are rewards, but there are many other things your pet enjoys. You can use all of these “rewards” to help your pet show appreciation for the great life you give them. After all, your pet needs to have good manners too! In addition to treats and petting, your pet values things like car rides, food bowls being put down, putting on a leash to go for a walk, opening doors to go outside, praise and interactive play with toys. Help your pet learn good manners by having them ask nicely for these “goodies”. Have your pet sit before opening a door or putting on a leash. Ask for a down, roll over or give paw before petting or toy play. By doing these things you help reinforce good manners and practice training at the same time. A win for you and your pet. Other ways you can show your pet you love them? Have them spayed or neutered, keep their vaccinations current and microchip them!

Forbidden Chocolate Seasoned pet lovers know the potentially life-threatening dangers of chocolate, including bakers, semi sweet, milk and dark. In darker chocolates, methylxanthines—caffeinelike stimulants that affect gastrointestinal, neurologic and cardiac function—can cause vomiting/diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures and an abnormally elevated heart rate. The high-fat content in lighter chocolates can potentially lead to a life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas. Go ahead and indulge, but don’t leave chocolate out for chowhounds to find.

Which Credit Cards Offer Warranties?
ne of the key choices shoppers must make when purchasing most electronic products and appliances is whether or not they want to pay extra money for an extended warranty. What many of us don’t realize is that we already have one. The benefit of having a credit card with its own warranty protection is that it eliminates some of the need to buy additional coverage with each product you buy. Visa and MasterCard both offer complimentary extended warranty and purchase protection with many of their cards, while American Express provides coverage for all cardholders. (Discover cards offer warranty protection as well, though only for a fee that varies based on the product and the card.) While the plans differ slightly, each card can automatically extend the manufacturer warranty for upward of a year or more, and the plan insures the product against loss or damage in the first 90 days after purchase as long as the customer used the card to buy the product. Still, many cardholders are unaware of their own coverage.
Many consumers do not take advantage of this coverage. Did you know that if a product breaks or shuts down and the manufacturer’s warranty has expired, you may have coverage if you used your Visa card to make the purchase? In fact, www.CardHub.com estimates that less than 5% of cardholders actually make use of the warranty benefits that come with their card. The coverage is automatically included on the cards that have it – with the exception of Discover cards – meaning it might fly under the radar for those cardholders who aren’t looking for it. Cardholders will need to have a copy of all receipts and the written warranty on hand to make use of the coverage, with the exception of Visa cards, which allow customers to register their purchases in the company’s warranty management system. Credit networks still offer different amounts of protection for different categories of cards and don’t offer it for everyone. Call each of your credit card companies to determine what each of your cards cover and the amount of coverage and of course, keep a record.

TECH TALK
Is your website working FOR you or AGAINST you?
I
n our last article, we asked you if you were presenting the right image to your customers. In this issue, we will discuss how to get your visitors to become customers. Here are several items for you to check and see if your website is up to snuff. If it isn’t, then contact us at Websitedzyn and we will make your site POP!
1. Make your site easy All of your web pages should be easy to use for your visitor. The navigation should be clear and precise and your pages need to load quickly. Don’t make your visitors search for what they are looking for. Easy to find equals a higher conversion of visitors to customers for you.
2. What makes you better than your competition? Let your visitors know why you are the best. Tell them about your guarantees, your exceptional customer service or your bottom line pricing. Testimonials confirming you are the best and community or business sector awards will also reinforce why your visitor should become your customer.
3. Make your website trustworthy Is the content in your site clear and unambiguous? Are your visitors getting the correct impression about the product or
service you are selling. Ask a person with no vested interest in your business to review your site and have them tell you if they would buy from you based on your site’s content. Make sure that your site has an easy way for your visitors to contact you. Let them know where you are located and that you want them to contact you with questions or concerns. Make sure you include information from the community or other business organizations that show you are an ethical and honest business to work with.
4. Have a clear “call-to-action” Does your website make it clear what you would like the visitor to do? Do you want them to visit your on-line store and make a purchase, should they contact you or perhaps click your facebook Like button? Your site will “work better for you” when your visitors are presented with an easily understood call-to-action.
5. Complicated forms create negative impressions You want your visitors to become customers. Don’t make them fill out unnecessary information for them to proceed with a purchase or to make contact with you. The less you ask for will translate into more from your potential customers.

TAYLOR MADE IN WEST TAMPA BAY
Ned Johnson AKA Mark Twain
M
y beloved friend of more than 30 years, Ned Johnson, is probably the most popular English professor at St Petersburg College. His curriculum at the Tarpon Springs Campus includes Composition I & II, Creative Writing, Journalism, Poetry & Fiction Workshops, and American Literature. He has single-handedly won the respect and love from his students thanks to his creativity in teaching and his love of the profession! Ned & I embarked on a new level of our relationship in January 2007, when he invited me to a show he was performing at East Carolina State University in North Carolina. The show consisted of his transformation into literary favorite, Mark Twain. He looked like Twain. He sounded like Twain. He became Mark Twain in the 21st Century! A bonus of “An Evening with Mark Twain,” was my portrayal of Livy Clemens, Samuel Clemens’ wife. Ned knew of my love for the dramatic arts, so he asked me if I wanted to play the part. I embraced it and have since played Livy on at least a half dozen occasions! The “Twain Show” began when a professor in Ned’s graduate studies at Western Kentucky University overheard him practicing an imitation of Twain in his office. Subsequently, Ned’s professor offered to waive the final exam for the entire class if Ned would do an impromptu performance as Mark Twain for more than an hour. Ned complied with the request and has continued performing as Twain since that day in 1991. Besides the performance in North Carolina, Ned has performed his “Twain Show” at numerous venues throughout Tampa Bay and the Southeastern United States, including SPC; St. Catharine College in Springfield, KY; Central Florida Community College; The Liberty Literary Arts Festival; The Port Charlotte Historical Society; The Lutheran Church of Punta Gorda, The World Famous Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, and many others. The proceeds of Ned’s “Twain Shows” are directly channeled to the Karen Pelz Memorial Writing Contest, which he established when his friend and academic mentor, Karen Pelz, died of esophageal cancer and left him $500 in her will. This contest has been a stepping stone for many individuals to expand their horizons in writing and life! The contest continues to grow each year. Anyone is eligible to compete for an award in the following categories: Poetry, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Literary Criticism, Media, and Special Projects (which includes videography). From the proceeds of the Twain shows, Ned offers cash prizes, trophies and certificates for the winners. In 2011, an anonymous donor began offering a $1000 scholarship to the overall winner. Ned’s next scheduled “Twain Show” is at 6:00 pm, February 29h at the Mid-County Regional Library, Port Charlotte. Tickets are $5, and will be available through the library beginning February 22nd. The Karen Pelz Memorial Writing Contest is accepting entries through March 31st, with the awards ceremony to be held in April. For more information about scheduling “An Evening with Mark Twain” for your next event, participating in the Karen Pelz Memorial Writing Contest, or making donations to the contest, please contact Ned directly via the Karen Pelz Contest Facebook page, or through his email: nedtwain@yahoo.com.

Networking for a Cause
Toni & Craig Weidman from RE/MAX Sunset Realty
A Story from the Heart -- People for Haiti Mission Trip “When I first met and talked with Guiga Vieira, President of People for Haiti, I fell in love with the story of Hope that they were giving the Haitian people. She told me that they are a not-for-Profit Organization dedicated to providing long-term support for the people devastated by the Haitian earthquake of 2010. They have helped thousands of Haitian citizens get medical care, brought thousands of doses of medicine to the ground, raised thousands of dollars for supplies, raised the funds needed to buy a water filtration system that provides clean and safe drinking water for an entire community and Organized 13 medical mission trips where over 100 volunteers have spent more than 100 days total on the ground helping local citizens. I have always wanted to go on some type of Mission Trip and instantly knew that I wanted to do what I could with People for Haiti. My mind kept wandering on when I could go and how I could also help spread the word about this wonderful organization. As an Ambassador of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, I network often with my Ambassador friends Craig and Toni Weidman with Remax Sunset Realty. They recently formed a Networking for a Cause West Pasco Florida group that helps a Cause several times a year. I approached them on helping me raise enough money for my expenses to go on a Mission Trip in August but more importantly to help raise money and more awareness for People for Haiti. They graciously moved the Fundraiser up to Friday, February 3rd at Ali Gators in Trinity. I am blessed that many have already given their support for my trip but I am more excited that I am helping raise more needed expenses and more awareness for People for Haiti.
The August Medical Mission trip feels like a lifetime away but I know it will come quickly. I am so humbled to be able to join the many Volunteers for People for Haiti and I know I will have a whirlwind of emotions and feelings and my life will be forever changed by being able to experience this trip. I hear the children wrap themselves around you and don't want to let you go. I can't wait to give them and the People OF Haiti my love and give them some Hope! I can't wait to start this journey” ~Maria Johnson Please join Maria on Friday, February 3rd, 5:30 pm at Ali Gators, 3523 Little Road in Trinity to help raise funds for People for Haiti to continue their ongoing HOPE to the Haitian people. There will be Raffle Baskets and a 50/50 Chance Drawing that evening. Ali Gators will also donate 10% back to People for Haiti for any food purchased. Donations will also be collected for many needed items that go to Haiti on these Mission Trips: Infant Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, Adult Tylenol, Kids Vitamins (chewables-no gummies), Adult Vitamins, Pre-Natal Vitamins, Neosporin and Reading glasses.
