Brian Anderson, SSGT, USA Pasco County Stand Down The events that took place on September 11, 2001 shaped my future dramatically. I was called to service, not by a draft, but by my own personal convictions. I enlisted in the U.S. Army as a photojournalist and was blessed to get Airborne School in my contract. I was sent to Fort Bragg, NC and I was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. I am so thankful I was raised in the 82nd Abn. Div. because I learned from some of the best conventional leaders the Army has to offer. It was great to understand that structure; however I am an unconventional type of guy so I needed a change. During a deployment to Iraq I had the opportunity to work with a team of Green Berets. After the experience of serving along side these warriors I felt called again, this time to don the Green Beret. This was no easy task, both selection and the qualification course I had to go through to answer my call to service were grueling, but with real service comes real sacrifice and real commitment. After earning my Green Beret I was assigned to 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and was immediately deployed to Afghanistan. I learned a lot during my deployments to Afghanistan, but nothing more important than the value of life. Our motto is “De Oppresso Liber”, to free the oppressed and after a few teammates passed I felt called to serve once again, this time back in the United States. I left the Army in May 2012 and started school at Saint Leo University. I am currently working on my Bachelors in Social Work. Since I moved here I have seen several homeless and at risk of homeless Veterans. I now serve as the task group leader for Pasco County Stand Down, an event of One Community Now, 501c3, which brings not only wrap around services (i.e. medical, dental, behavioral, addiction, employment, showers, clothes, food) but also a community environment that fosters a healthy relationship with our returning Veterans. Our Veterans served us, now we must serve them. We can not allow our returning Veterans to become statistics like our warriors before them; rather, as a community, we must find that personal conviction within us to serve our men and women as they return to the civilian population.

Sgt Michael Constantine, USMC MNB Cleaning Solutions Michael Constantine grew up in Coral Springs, FL, and became homeless before graduating high school. That’s when he made the decision to enlist in the United States Marine Corp, where he earned his Seargent stripes. When he graduated from Parris Island, he knew he was on a path to success! Michael began his eight-year civilian career in the mortgage industry, which led him to Pasco County. He was hired into the banking industry to manage training and recruitment for large local banks, using his Veteran status to introduce other Veterans into the banking industry. Michael opened MNB Cleaning Solutions, a licensed and insured, Disabled Veteran-Owned business, specializing in healthcare cleaning services. However, MNB is not just Veteran-owned, it is Veteran-operated! Michael explains, “In speaking with a lot of Veterans and seeing the struggles they have in transitioning to the corporate world, I decided to open MNB 2

Anthony “Tony”Nalli, TSGT, USAF Life Mobile At one point when Viet Nam was in turmoil and falling, Anthony “Tony” Nalli , was serving in the United States Air Force on a weapons crew that had “de-arm duty” for returning aircraft. Tony recalls, “We had so many planes landing from Viet Nam with full loads of bombs and ammo, but the real work was unloading the people from the cockpit. This was a one-seat aircraft but three or four people would be in there. The day started at 6 AM and ended at 10 PM, nonstop planes and people. Then, when it couldn’t get worse, a fire started in the grass where they were parking them (the planes), so my crew and I grabbed fire extinguishers and started to put the fires out till the fire department got there.” That’s just one day in the life of one USAF Serviceman. Tony entered the Air Force in 1968 fresh out of High School and spent 20 years defending our country until retiring from service in 1988. Now, he serves others in a different way, as an Independent Representative for Life Mobile. Tony added, “My job is not a job. It’s a freedom to be me and not depend on others. We are free to say what we want, do what we want, and go where we want. I’ve been to countries where you can’t go from one city to another without permission, or if you want to live in your own home, the government loans it to you. You cannot own without government permission. “Like many before me and those now and to come, we all love America, and we signed a blank check to all citizens that we would give our all to protect them and our way of life.” Tony is an active member of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus and the West Pasco Business Association. He and his wife of 42 years, Gail, reside in Trinity, and have a son, Darrell, and two granddaughters. Thank you, Tony, for your diligent service to our community and our country!

Cleaning Solutions and put as many Veterans to work as possible.” With many suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or other service-related injuries, MNB offers a wide variety of services that they can perform. MNB Cleaning Solutions provides full service cleaning, carpet/tile/vct steam cleaning, and weekly/monthly contractual janitorial services for all retail, medical, law, educational, and daycare offices in the Tampa area. “As someone who was once homeless at an early stage in my life, I fully understand the power of giving someone a chance to succeed. If I did not have someone who had faith in me and took me under their wing, I would not be where I am today. I want to give that same opportunity to as many Veterans as I can,” Michael added. For more information about MNB Cleaning Services, contact Michael Constantine at 727-415-0922, or email mike@mnbcleaningsolutions.com.

“The Art & Science of Dentistry”

david w. dempsey, d.d.s. the art and science of dentistry

Dr. David W. & Becky Dempsey Create Beautiful Smiles in our Community By Debra Taylor

D

entistry has evolved significantly over the years with the advent of new technologies and expanded services, and Dr. David W. Dempsey, dental surgeon and Trinity resident, is proud to offer the very best of these technologies and services to each patient in his practice. Becky Dempsey, Dr. Dempsey’s wife explains, “We truly believe that our patients are not just patients, but members of our ‘patient family’. David and I, along with our wonderful staff, have tried to develop strong relationships with our patients over the years, just like anyone would with a friend they value and want to keep.” Dr. Dempsey opened his family dental practice in downtown New Port Richey in 1978, and from there, his very successful efforts evolved with the times over the course of a quarter century. After two decades downtown, they relocated their office to Trinity due to the tremendous residential growth in the area. Dr. Dempsey and his expert staff work tirelessly to keep up with advances in dentistry and dental surgery through hours of continuing education. You can certainly receive more than simply a beautiful smile following a visit to Dr. Dempsey’s office! Their modern approach to “The Art and Science of Dentistry” includes spa treatments and procedures that are administered while patients are poised in the dental chair for an extended period of time. Most importantly, Dr. Dempsey and his team demonstrate anti-anxiety techniques so that patients experience a reduced level of fear and stress that many suffer when faced with dental appointments and procedures. A native of Portsmouth, VA, Dr. Dempsey and his family moved to the Washington D.C. area while he was in junior high school. He continued his education in that area, earning his undergraduate degree from University of Maryland-College Park, and his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from University of Maryland-Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. Dr. Dempsey’s skillful and talented staff consists of two dental hygienists, Betsy Pinto and Krystal Miccio; two dental assistants, Deanna Leggio and Ashley Hargitai; and front desk manager, Monica Lim.

What sets Dr. Dempsey’s dental practice apart from others in West Pasco County, is clear to his many satisfied patients. Becky adds, “Although there are many wonderful dental professionals in our area, we like to think that we give a little bit more to make each patient’s dental experience a positive one.” In terms of family, cosmetic, and “spa” dentistry, the procedures they perform are extensive. In addition to hygiene maintenance (cleanings) and fillings, Dr. Dempsey specializes in complete “smile makeovers”. This can consist of crowns, bridges, veneers, implants & whitening. Dr. Dempsey is experienced in making dentures and partials if that is the only option for a patient. He also performs root canal therapy and certain periodontal therapy, as well. His office utilizes the latest in digital radiographic imaging. Plus, patients may request complimentary hand paraffin treatments with every cleaning. Last but not least, Dr. Dempsey provides his patients with their Botox maintenance treatments! Between them, Dr. Dempsey and his wife Becky have four children and are the proud grandparents of two beautiful grandchildren with one on the way! They love the closeknit feeling that exudes throughout the Trinity community. They strive to give back by being contributors to a number of professional, charitable, and social organizations within Trinity and Pasco County such as Youth and Family Alternatives RAP River Run, The PACE Center for Girls, and the Pasco Education Foundation, just to name a few. Dr. Dempsey also provides complimentary dental care to several athletes on the Special Olympics Team. He is a member of the West Pasco Dental Association, The Florida Dental Association and The American Dental Association. Dr. Dempsey’s practice is located in Trinity Professional Place at 10733 Maple Creek Drive, Suite 102. Their hours of operation are 8:30 AM-5:00 PM, Monday-Thursday. If you are a patient returning to see Betsy or Krystal, early-bird appointments can be scheduled through Monica beginning at 7:30 AM. To contact the office, call 727-372-0550. They welcome you to experience “The Dempsey Difference!”

Grilled Oysters – A Favorite Summertime Recipe Complimented with a glass of refreshing wine, Rose D’Anjou By: Diana Jerome Adding rice to this recipe may help steady the oysters and prevent the flavorful sauce and juices from spilling. Of course, I only used rice because I didn't have any rock salt in the house. You can use either, or if you're able to balance the oysters on the grill grates, go for it!

Ingredients 16 whole live oysters 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon chili pepper flakes (or substitute with dashes of Tabasco) 1/4 teaspoon salt Cracked black pepper to taste 1 tablespoon finely minced parsley Yield: Makes 16 oysters

How to grill oysters

If you can find large, fat oysters, you can place the oysters directly on the grill grates. It's best to wear long, sturdy BBQ gloves so you can handle the oysters by hand instead of using tongs, spoons or spatula. However, if the oysters are small and flat, you'll run the risk of spilling its valuable, flavorful juices as well as the garlic-butter sauce. You can do what I've done, which is to place the oysters on a bed of rock salt or rice in a small pan -- and then placing the entire pan inside the grill or under a broiler. This steadies the oysters and prevents them from wobbling.

If you are a shuckmeister

Shuck the oysters, spoon a little sauce in each oyster. Place oysters on a very hot, preheated grill, cover and cook for 5-6 minutes or until the edges of oysters curl slightly.

Time For Wine - Rose D’Anjou

This crisp, refreshing blush hails from France's best territory for fresh wines, the Loire Valley. This medium/ dry wine, made from the Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir skins for color, hails from the famous Anjou region, where the pears are grown. Filled with fresh berry and fruit notes, this is ideal for warm days on the patio, as well as elegant seafood and poultry dishes. This is a wonderful, berry-tasting, dry light summer wine that goes well with Grilled Oysters, Shellfish, steamed Crab Legs and Shrimp Cocktail. At Time for Wine, we offer you the opportunity to enjoy this lovely Rose, along with many other European and Domestic wines. Contact Diana at 813-664-1430 to order yours today, or visit our website at www.ewinetaste.com.

If you can't shuck

Place the oysters, cup side up on a very hot, preheated grill, cover and cook for 1 minute. The oysters should now be slightly open. Quickly remove the oysters. Hold an oyster with an oven mitt and use a shucking knife (or a clean screwdriver if you don't have one) to pry open the oyster. It should easily open. Spoon sauce into each oyster and return oysters to the grill. Cover and grill 4-5 minutes. www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Daddy’s Girl Always

Joanna DeLuca’s Finest Jewel! Seaman First Class, Michael Peter Jordan, United States Navy The words clearly written on a plain piece of paper recant the most vivid memories of Seaman First Class, Michael Peter Jordan, US Navy, who served for 13 years as both active and reserve: “The whole experience was memorable. We boarded the ship, USS Hermitage, (AP54), at 2:30 AM, and sailed the same day out of New York Harbor to Marsaille, France and brought back 5800 troops. We (returned and) sailed up the Hudson River with bands playing and people cheering and boats spraying water hoses in the air as we passed the Statue of Liberty. “Next we went down through the Panama Canal on to Pearl Harbor and then to Nagoya, Japan, where we brought 6000 troops to Seattle, WA. Next to San Francisco and Guam and Saipon with 6000 more troops. Then, two more trips to Guam with troops coming from all over the Pacific Islands.” This series of events can be referenced in the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, provided by ibiblio.org. It is written in history, and Michael Peter Jordan was a participant! The USS Hermitage I (AP-54), originally sailed as an Italian luxury cruise ship hosting the rich and famous as passengers, with its initial launch in 1925. When Italy declared war on the United States, the vessel was converted to a transport ship by Cramp Shipbuilding Company in Philadelphia, to transfer troops, POW’s and refugees from foreign soil to the United States. The USS Hermitage I (AP-54), was commissioned by the US Navy August 25, 1942, with Captain Donald F. Patterson in command. Daughter, Joanna and Son-in-law, Larry DeLuca, owners of DeLuca’s Fine Jewelry and Style Makers, are extremely proud of their Father and the role he played in the United States Navy, and the role he played as a Dad. Joanna explains, “My Mother and Father raised three girls on very little, but we had everything! They taught us right from wrong, and instilled in us morals and values that have stayed with us all our lives.” Michael Peter Jordan just turned 86 years-young! He is still active with the US Coast Guard Auxillary, bowls in a senior bowling league, and works out regularly at the gym. Thank you, Seaman First Class Michael Peter Jordan, for your service! We all salute you!!

Sassy, Sultry Summer Styles with Ken Pavés | http://www.oprah.com/style/Sassy-Sultry-Summer-Styles

Sassy, Sultry Summer Hair

Fun-filled summer days are not necessarily a day at the beach for your tresses. In fact, the very things you love most about summertime may wreak major havoc on your lovely locks. Give yourself and your fragile follicles a much-needed break. Pack up your blow dryers and hot irons and go with the flow of the season's hottest hair trends.

Summer Trends—Go Natural

Do your own "mane" thing. Let your hair's born-with-it-textures gloriously emerge. Stylish tresses, from ravishing ringlets, bouncy waves and chunky layers, to tousled and flippy ends, are all the current rage. "Minimalist Chic" is in. Dump harsh, rigid, studied styles that are definitely no longer happening. Start with a fun and fabulous cut that works with your hair's natural texture and type. Opt for styles that effortlessly compliment your vacation time plans. Select hairstyles that flow easily from a day lying by the pool, to a languid moonlight dinner under the stars. Intentionally windswept, surf-infused tousled mops are fabulous for any length or type of hair and will turn heads everywhere.

How to Look Good in Photos

Always look your best in photos with these pointers.

Strike a flattering pose • • • •

If you're being photographed next to another person, angle your torso to face them slightly, creating a slimmer profile. Standing up? Cross one of your legs in front of the other. This will give the illusion of longer legs and a leaner silhouette. The famous "skinny arm" trick may be overused, but it works! Not only does putting a hand on your hip lengthen your arm, but it also forces you to stand up a little straighter. Do you have long hair? Before the flash goes off, pull it forward from the base of your neck to the front of your shoulders -- it will look fuller and more voluminous.

And smile! • • • •

14

Turn your head slightly to camouflage asymmetry and capture a more flattering angle. Tilt your face downwards, “chin down,” not up. For a genuine smile that doesn’t look forced, make yourself laugh by thinking of a funny story. As the photographer counts aloud to three, close your eyes, opening them on three as the photo is snapped. For a more natural expression, gaze at a spot slightly above the camera lens instead of directly into it.

Tampa Bay Residents Allen and Melanie Milletics Named Body By Vi™ Challenge Champions Couple wins celebrity style Ultimate Transformation Vacation for achieving health goals. "We would never have thought that we would run a 5k race together. The Challenge was completely amazing and life transformational. " Tampa Bay,Florida (PRWEB) Allen and Melanie Milletics won the Body by Vi™ Challenge and were named the Active Couple Champions. ViSalus, the lifestyle transformation company that champions people’s weight loss and fitness goals through the Body by Vi™ Challenge, announced 21 new Body by Vi™ Champions before a crowd of nearly 10,000 at its annual National Success Training event in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 23, 2013. Winners are chosen based on results achieved during their personal challenge (50%), personal story of their transformation (25%) and a community vote (25%). Allen and Melanie’s compelling story helped them win the Champion title. “We would never have thought that we would run a 5k race together. This was completely amazing and life transformational. We trained for months. Allen was working out with a personal trainer working to build up muscle mass. He had started at virtually zero because he has herniated discs and an ankle that has always given him trouble. The morning of the race was surreal and fantastic. I'm 38, and Allen is 45. The Gasparilla Distance Classic was our first 5k race. We had our two beautiful kids ages 8 and 12 in the back as we drove over to compete in a race. I was so proud that they were going to watch their parents run and that they were seeing us as these healthy, vital people. My goal was to run it - completely - and to finish my first race ever in less than 35 minutes. His goal was to complete the 5K, even if it meant walking part of the way to avoid injuring his ankle. As the starting gun went off and I took off, saying ‘see you at the finish love’, I cannot tell you how much my heart soared! I ran ahead and finished in 32:43 and Allen crossed the finish line about 10 minutes later - having jogged the whole way! He was elated! Our Challenge was fueled by the Vi-Shape Shake® and other ViSalus Products such as GO®, PRO®, and NEURO®,” said Melanie. “We’re so proud of the discipline and hard work our Champions put into the Challenge to achieve their personal goals,” said Ryan Blair, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of ViSalus. “It’s beyond rewarding to see so many people taking the Challenge and sharing their achievements with others. We hope these newest Champions inspire even more people to go for their personal best in life.”

Among other congratulatory gifts, all Champions are rewarded with an “Ultimate Transformation Vacation”- including head-to-toe spa makeovers at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, a stay at the W Hollywood Hotel, a $5,000 shopping spree with a personal celebrity stylist from Haute Street, Body by Vi™ Challenge Champion shoots with celebrity photographers, tickets to a Lakers game and more, for the complete Body By Vi Active Couple's Champions, Allen and Melanie Milletics V.I.P. red carpet experience. The Body by Vi™ Challenge starts with a simple personal goal set by each individual to improve their health, whether by shedding pounds, achieving their optimum physique or accomplish an athletic activity. The Challenge is built on five unique Challenge Kits to assist in these goals – Balance Kit, Shape Kit, Core Kit, Transformation Kit, and Fit Kit. Products in each kit are scientifically designed to help each person meet and exceed their own personal goals. ViSalus encourages everyone to join the Challenge online and document their results along the way with the use of their social media application - The Challenge Trainer. At the end of each person’s 90-day Challenge, they submit their results for a chance to share in $47 million in free products, prizes and vacations each year. Winners are crowned in three platforms (Weight-Loss, Active and Fitness) and three categories per platform: Male, Female, and Couple. In addition, ViSalus also crowns a Team, Family and a Random Drawing Champion. Winners in each category are called Champions and are announced and crowned three times a year at ViSalus National Events. Your Surgical Specialist: Keith Chisholm, M.D., F.A.C.S.

When surgery is the only option, turn to Dr. Keith Chisholm of Surgical Specialists of Trinity for the highest quality care available! Dr. Chisholm is credited for performing some of the first robotic surgeries in Pasco and North Pinellas counties, including the first robotic-assisted, single-incision gallbladder surgeries. Currently, Dr. Chisholm performs surgery at Medical Center of Trinity and Florida Hospital North (Helen Ellis Memorial) in Tarpon Springs. Minimally invasive surgery is the preferred method to correct problems with gall bladders, hernias, colons, appendixes, and more. Robotic surgery has become an acceptable option for minimally invasive procedures. “I guess laparoscopic colon surgery would be my favorite,” Dr. Chisholm confesses, “because it is technically challenging and the benefit goes far beyond the cosmetic. It provides for a better cancer operation than open procedures in many cases.” Aside from decreased pain, studies have shown numerous advantages to robotic and laparoscopic surgeries including faster recovery times and decreased disruption to the anatomy, which is especially beneficial to cancer patients. To schedule a consultation, contact Office Manager Jennifer Bryant at 727-372-0400. Dr. Jordan Young & Dr. Robert Smith Joining Forces for a Healthier Community!

Native Pasco County resident, Jordan Young, M.D., aspired to be like his Father, a well respected doctor in his community. He attended Florida State University after graduating from Ridgewood High School in Port Richey, where he majored in Nutrition & Fitness. From there, he continued on to medical school in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and completed his residency in Greenville, North Carolina. When he returned to the Florida in July 2012, Dr. Jordan Young joined his father, Dr. Robert Young, in his Bayonet Point practice, both specializing in Internal Medicine. “I wanted to work with my Dad, so I chose his area of expertise. Like father, like son,” Dr. Young explains. “We work mostly with patients suffering from complex maladies such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease, just to name a few.” However, Dr. Young’s contemporary style and desire to expand his practice along with his expertise and training in procedures such as application of Botox and Juvederm® fillers, has led him in a new direction, straight to Trinity! “I wanted to expand my practice in Trinity. There’s a wonderful growing population who are making their homes here,” he explained. “I want to live closer to the community which I serve, being available for my patients is important to me.” Dr. Jordan Young has been married to his wife, Maria, for six years. They have two children, Alex, 18, and Sophia, 3.

Coming Soon to Trinity!

While seeking to find and share office space in Trinity, Dr. Jordan Young met Dr. Robert L. Smith, Jr., a Gynecologist/ Obstetrician practicing at Women’s Care Center. Dr. Smith grew up in the Buffalo, NY, area and completed his undergraduate degree in Rochester. He continued on to Chicago Medical School, where he earned his medical degree and served his residency. Dr. Smith relocated to Florida in 1997, because “even growing up in Buffalo, I hated the winters and cold weather,” he confessed.”When I was trapped at the hospital in Chicago following foul weather, I decided that was it.” A New Port Richey resident for more than fifteen years now, Dr. Smith serves his patients primarily at Medical Center of Trinity. He also has privileges at Morton Plant Northbay, and Mease Countryside Hospitals. “This is a great place to practice, Dr. Smith said. “Patients are genuinely nice here.” Dr. Smith and his wife of ten years, Lori, reside in New Port Richey, where they are raising their 3 year-old son, Trey. Dr. Jordan Young and Dr. Robert L, Smith, Jr., joined forces to open their practice in Trinity: 9332 State Road 54, Suite 202, in the Medical Arts Building on the campus of Medical Center of Trinity. They will host the grand opening of their new location in August. To schedule an appointment please call, Dr. Young at 727-862-5478 or Dr. Smith at 727-849-1659.

DEFY Aging

MASTER WARRIOR GOLF One Year Anniversary Master Warrior Golf, by Grand Master Dennis Kelly, celebrates the ONE YEAR Anniversary of its first “official” pilot study done at Crescent Oaks Golf &Country Club, featuring General Manager and Golf Pro, Jerry Couzynse. Grand Master Dennis Kelly, five-time World Martial Arts Champion, and author of The Six Steps to the Fountain of Youth, has proven that the secrets to his success in one sport, can and will affect his success in other sports. He introduced his Master Warrior Golf Peak Performance Program in 2012, as a pilot study consisting of a group of golfers at Crescent Oaks, who all achieved a 100 % success rate. This special “niche” program created by Kelly through his company, Defy Aging, Inc., centered around his observations of the students who were regularly attending his Tai Chi classes, who were also showing improvements in their golf scores at various golf courses. Knocking strokes off their games, driving balls further, and winning first place trophies, were caveats, and the only difference between his students and other handicapped golfers was their regular participation in his Tai Chi/Chi Kung classes. In an effort to understand how this worked, Kelly took a break-down approach to his class. He decided to put together a program designed specifically for golfers, which would include miraculous side benefits to their golf game and their game of life! Targeting golfers, “Master Warrior Golf” was born, using specific exercises geared for the golfer. Specialized breathing, guided imagery, and his newly-created “dynamic fusion,” helped build strength and lean muscle, while increasing metabolism for fatburning, all of which encouraged weight loss. “One of the things that really helps golfers through my system, is instruction about avoiding injuries through improved balance, focus and concentration,

all necessary to become a “winning warrior” at golf,” Kelly explains. “Not only do these elements help in the game of golf, but with the game of life!” The “Master Warrior Golf” pilot study was a 100 % success with each of the participants, and is now being implemented as an additional certification for a “Professional Master Warrior Instructor,” perfect for the committed golf pro to add to their skill sets. “These experiences taught me to relax more on the course and to better visualize my golf shots. The bottom line is my golf game is improving and my handicap is going down!” Joan U “I continue to practice the lessons of “dynamic fusion” as well as the brain exercises. It has improved my focus and ability to maintain a positive attitude, and it has given me strength to hit the ball further. My handicap dropped dramatically and remains!” Kay T

ANYONE can become a “winning warrior” in all areas of the life experience by following the tried & true methods of doing the same process consistently, with passion and purpose, combining the mind, body & spirit! Undefeated swordsman, Miyomoto Musashi, once said, “You must become one with the sword.” “In golf, you must become one with the golf club!” states Grand Master Kelly. Sinkhole Concerns? Global Ground Solutions is Just a Call Away When the ground opened up in Seffner and swallowed a man whole and alive as he had just retired to bed, people in Tampa Bay, in Florida, across America and the World were awakened to a tragic reality that sinkholes are dangerous and fatal possibilities that exist right here in our own communities. Families and homeowners quickly became acutely aware of the devastation sinkholes can cause when Jeff Busch died that fateful night. However, Brian Lipsey, President of Global Ground Solutions, wakes up every morning knowing his company is saving people’s most valuable assets: their homes, and quite possibly, their lives. “This is something I have done most of my life, feel very passionate about, and take a lot of pride in doing,” Brian explained. “By upholding our high quality of workmanship and providing the best consumer service to our clients, their families will once again feel safe and secure in the one place they should: their homes.” Global Ground Solutions is an innovative ground modification and sinkhole repair company that specializes in residential and commercial projects throughout Florida. The company’s profile clearly states that their team is “dedicated to using only the highest quality personnel, equipment and repair programs in the ground modification industry.” This means everything when protecting your home and your family. The Smith family wrote, “Our home was number eleven with a sinkhole issue on our street. We watched several of the homes being repaired. It wasn’t until your company contracted with our next-door neighbor that we realized there was one company, Global Ground Solutions that was far superior to the others.”

the area further, they use plastic, 4ml thick, under the concrete trucks and pump to protect roads from oil, fuel, or concrete spills. The Global Ground Solutions advanced equipment is second to none. They are the only company offering two-laser transmits to monitor structure and ground movement from three to four sides. This offers two different perspectives on ground movement, thereby providing the most comprehensive ground movement examination available. The hydraulics, the grout injectors and the in-line gauges were all designed to operate effectively and efficiently so projects are completed right on schedule, and at, or under, the proposed budget! Brian admits, “When I worked for other companies, the decisions were based on profits. Now, as owner and President of Global Ground Solutions, I am able to base my decisions on doing the very best job, which sometimes cuts into our profits.” His passion stems from the experience he’s cultivated over the last 15 years. Brian has completed more than 1000 residential jobs including single and multi-story homes, pools, garages and additions. He has completed over 100 commercial projects, some quite familiar to Tampa Bay residents: Howard Franklin Bridge, Lowes, Target, Live Oak City Hall, University of South Florida and Timber Pines Golf Course. Brian has worked on at least 40 Department of Transportation roadway projects on US 19, US 41, Veterans Expressway, as well as Interstates -4, -75 and -275.

Additional testimonials boast the same about Brian’s company and the professionalism and high quality workmanship demonstrated by the Global Ground Solutions team. With more than 34-years combined experience, these contractors know what they’re doing and pride themselves on doing the job right the first time, with little or no aesthetic damage to the property!

Brian started as a laborer in 1998, after 3 months he was promoted to foreman and within one year he worked his way up to lead foreman. By 2006, he served as Director of Operations, the highest position within the company, responsible for maintaining operations of the company from top to bottom. With his wealth of knowledge and experience, and his commitment to quality workmanship and overall excellence, with compassion, Brian oversees every aspect of Global Ground Solutions, and resolves to be the most respected leader in the ground modification industry!

Their services include pressure grouting, compaction grouting, chemical grouting, slurry grouting, underpinning, micro piles, auger case piles and grade beams.

“Global Ground Solutions has grown into something I am very proud to be a part of, and I feel blessed to call myself the owner,” Brian said.

A 20-foot, self-contained trailer was designed for Global Ground Solutions to house everything necessary to complete their projects and the drilling process. This means there is no need to unload heavy equipment onto a customer’s yard. To protect

Soften water to reduce stress on plumbing

If your water has a high mineral content—known as hard water—it can shorten the lifespan of your home’s pipes, resulting in plumbing leaks. Those naturally occurring minerals, usually magnesium or calcium, build up inside pipes and restrict flow, increasing the pressure. Plus, they can corrode joints and fittings. A white buildup on shower heads and faucets is a telltale sign of hard water. Or, if your house receives municipal water service, you can easily find out how hard it is. By law, every municipality must file an annual water quality report with the Environmental Protection Agency. source: www.houselogic.com

LIVING

Tornado Hits Close to Home: My Sister, My Hero

According to a recent report in USA Today, the two category EF5 tornadoes that struck Oklahoma in late May were rare, unusually large and powerful. On the 0-to-5 Enhanced Fujita Scale of Tornado Intensity, an EF5 tornado’s projected wind speed exceeds 200 mph. Unfortunately, the sister of local businessman, Bill Place, owner of Crescent Oaks and Wentworth Golf Clubs, witnessed the destruction and the aftermath of the massive EF5 tornado that tore through Moore, OK, and destroyed the school where she served as librarian. Here is a chilling excerpt from Pi Johnston’s email to Bill: “My school is totaled; it is completely gone except for one or two brick walls. Plaza Towers Elementary was built in the 60's, with the library added-on in 1998. A new building in back of the main building was built five or six years ago, and that is where the children were killed 2nd and 3rd graders. The boiler exploded, flooding the halls, and the walls collapsed, pinning them down in the water. We are still doing a head count. I survived with everyone in the main building by cramming into the bathrooms. Afterwards, I helped get children out and over the rubble. Then we had to try and calm them down enough to tell us whether they were hurt.”

Pi suffered some bruising and torn shoulder ligaments after lifting children from the rubble. She visited with President Obama, where she commended fellow teachers and administrators. “My hero is my sister Pi Johnston,” Bill commented. “Instead of leaving the school at first notice of the tornado, Pi stayed to help the kids and get them out of the demolished school. Pi has always given her best to her school kids; this time she helped save their lives.” Charities providing relief to residents of tornado-ravaged neighborhoods in Moore and Oklahoma City are seeing an influx of donations from around the country. Most local efforts have shifted from requesting goods to requesting monetary donations to help the Sooner State. Donations can be made to the following: •

American Red Cross: Text “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 donation; call (800)733-2767, or visit www.redcross.org.

The Salvation Army: Send checks or money orders to P.O. Box 2785, Lubbock, TX 79408; or to Oklahoma Tornado Relief, P.O. Box 12600, Oklahoma City, OK 73157.

Text “storm” to 80888 to make a $10 donation.

4 Classy Kitchen Cabinet Updates for Under $100 You don’t have to spend a lot to give your tired cabinets a lift. These 5 inexpensive cabinet updates will brighten the mood of your entire kitchen. KraftMaid/Masco Retail Cabinet Group

If you’re going to dive into this DIY project, keep these tips in mind: • Lighter-colored paints will make your kitchen seem bigger. • Don’t skip on prep. Thoroughly clean cabinet doors and boxes to remove grease and dried-on gunk; fill holes or nicks with wood putty, then sand. • Sand each coat of paint so your final coat will look perfect. • Lay doors flat to paint, and wait until each side is completely dry before painting the other side. It will take more time, but you’ll avoid ugly drip marks.

In this before-and-after shot, the home owner added molding to cabinet doors to update the look. Image: Brandi@ bet1975. blogspot.com www.houselogic.com 1. HANDSOME HARDWARE Knobs and pulls are kitchen jewelry that can dress cabinets up. To save time and money, replace 1-hole hardware with 1-hole upgrades; 2-hole with 2-hole. That way, you won’t need to drill or patch.

3. MOULDING MIRACLES Crown molding adds a touch of class to the tops of tired cabinets for less than you’d expect. Three-inch, primed composite crown molding with a dentil design costs as little as $20 for 8 ft. 4. FANCY GLASS Change the glass insert in a cabinet door, and you change the look and feel of your kitchen. “Decorative glass takes stock cabinets and gives them a custom look,” says Anthony Longo, who sells glass panels. Types of glass inserts are limitless — contemporary, bubbles, raindrops on water & antique.

2. PRETTY IN PAINT Nothing updates old cabinets as quickly as fresh coat of paint. Painting cabinets yourself is cost-effective — a few gallons of paint, sandpaper, cleaner — but the process is time-intensive. You can paint most cabinet surfaces, but proper prep is key to success. For laminate and melamine finishes, be sure to rough up the surface with 150-grit sandpaper, and apply a good bonding primer before topping it off with the color of your choice.

IN WEST

Proud to be an American By Debra Taylor

TAMPA BAY

Memorial Day and Fourth of July celebrations accentuate our summers with backyard barbeques, cornhole games, swimming, boating, fireworks, and fun fellowship with family and friends! However, it is important not to forget the reasons behind these most special of occasions.

2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence.

As the unofficial kick-off to the summer season, Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, is annually observed on the last Monday of May, to remember the many men and women, past and present, who have courageously fought for our freedom and security through military service. We honor them by visiting gravesites, decorating headstones, and participating in numerous patriotic celebrations. Having originated in the years following the Civil War, Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1971.

I have an enormous level of respect and gratitude for the hundreds of thousands of men, women, and families, who have sacrificed their lives to protect our American freedoms. It’s rather overwhelming to consider how long America has been defending itself against enemies, “both foreign and domestic,” to protect the rights and freedoms our forefathers set forth in the United States Constitution more than two centuries ago.

We all know the reason behind the Fourth of July, right? Here is the synopsis according to History.com:

July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (177583). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies, then fighting in the revolutionary struggle, weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July

My father, my brother, my uncles and great-uncles chose to give back through their service in the Army, Air Force and National Guard branches. Most served tours of duty around the world during such conflicts as the Korean War, World War II and Vietnam, and some during peacetime occupations in Japan, Korea and Thailand. I am extremely proud to be an American and to have a family history of service. As I raise my wine glass to toast this Fourth of July, I do not hesitate to recognize and remember why!

money matters

YOU HAVE A 26% CHANCE OF LOSING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS Tracy Robinson, Director of Insurance Unbehagen Insurance, Inc., a division of Unbehagen Advisors www.UnbehagenAdvisors/Insurance 727-934-7759 Your home has a 26% chance of being damaged by a flood over the life of a 30 year mortgage. Floods are the #1 natural disaster in the United States. Your homeowner’s policy does not cover damage to your home and property due to floods. You can live miles away from water and still be a victim of flooding. On average, 25-30% of flood insurance claims come from low-to-moderate risk areas. That’s partly because it doesn’t take a major body of water, or even a major storm, to cause a flood. Anything from a broken sewer line to a slow moving rainstorm can cause flooding. Just a few inches of water from a flood can cause thousands of dollars in damage. If you are in a Special Flood Hazard Area, the law requires flood insurance in an amount equal to the outstanding principal balance of the loan on your home, the value of the building, or the maximum coverage available, whichever is less. Flood insurance must also be maintained for the life of the loan.

Although it is only required for the coverage to be in the amount of the loan balance, you should seriously consider protecting your equity and fully insure the home and its contents in case of a flood. Flood insurance protects your largest asset, your home. For a modest annual premium, you can have peace of mind that you will be covered for your eligible losses. Flood insurance is just one of many policies that our insurance division provides. Since Unbehagen Insurance, Inc. is independent, we can compare prices, of all possible insurances, among many well-known and established insurance companies! Once you are a client, we continue to do this yearly at no additional fee – FOR YOU! Ten (10) minutes is all it takes for a quote! Simply call me today. I’m Tracy, the director of Unbehagen Insurance, Inc. I love to save clients their hard-earned money!

Every day this summer, Ace Golf is offering kids ages 5 to 15 a free small bucket of balls to hit on the golf range at any one of their 5 locations.

Located within extravagant, gated communities, these semiprivate golf clubs welcome the public to participate in rounds of golf, shop the pro shops, dine in beautiful restaurants, and host incredible banquets, receptions, meetings and events. After millions of dollars in upgrades, these golf courses are in impeccable condition to enhance the whole golf & country club experience! Crescent Oaks and Wentworth Golf & Country Club have been touted by members and guests as two of the friendliest golf courses in West Tampa Bay! Membership in one club means benefits at all three of the courses owned by Place: Crescent Oaks, Wentworth and Pebble Creek.

Both courses are open to the public seven days/week. For more information about Crescent Oaks, located at 3300 Crescent Oaks Blvd., call 813-6954285 or visit www.crescentoaksgolf.com. Wentworth Golf & Country Club is located at 2990 Wentworth Way, and can be reached at 727-439-0454, or www.wentworthgolfclub.org. 36

Just stop by and pick up a punch card now through August. Kids age 5-15 can play golf for free any day this summer with a paying adult. Ace Golf also offers Summer Junior Golf Camps, Adult Golf Schools, Summer Golf Round Package Discounts, and “Everyday Heroes” golf discounts for active duty police and first responders. “Golf is a mainstream sport that anyone of any ability can play at just about any age”, says Ace Golf Owner Bill Place. “Anyone may take advantage of our lesson programs, dine in our restaurants, and play at our courses. We also offer additional privileges and events with membership.” Wentworth Golf Club | 2990 Wentworth Way, Tarpon Springs | 727-942-4760 www.wentworthgolfclub.org Crescent Oaks Country Club | 3300 Crescent Oaks Boulevard, Tarpon Springs 727- 937-4653 | www.crescentoaksgolf.com

In restaurants, for example, a server should be rewarded with a gratuity of 15-20%, of the check TOTAL, BEFORE coupons or discounts are applied. In a buffet-style restaurant where service is limited to beverages and clean-up, 10% is standard. Often times, people base tips on the final bill total after discounts, which short-changes and ultimately penalizes the service professional who has performed well. Sommeliers, or wine stewards, may share the server’s gratuity. However, if you choose to tip separately, 10-20% of the wine cost is appropriate. Coat-Checkers generally receive $1/coat.

Here are some additional tips on tipping: • Salon Stylists, Manicurists, Massage Therapists: 15-20% • If more than one person attends to you, (Shampooers, Colorists, etc), they share 15-20% • Taxi, Limo Drivers, 15-20% • Bellhops, Porters, $2/bag

• Valet Attendants, $2 • Hotel Housekeepers, $2/day • Concierge, $5-$25, if they secure dinner reservations or exclusive theater tickets • Doormen, $1, if they hail your taxi or deliver your car

MysteryPAR Diner FOUR With amazing real estate, great shopping, world-class golf courses, Trinity offers families some of the best living in the North Tampa area of Florida. I find that to be very true! I’ve been dining in this area for the last 7 years, and have seen many restaurants come and go, but one that has been around and stayed the course since my family and I moved to Trinity is Windows on the Green at Fox Hollow Golf Club. Our table had a fantastic view of the 18th green, #10 tee and the beautiful 10-acre lake. Accentuated by the beauty of a stunning Florida afternoon, we were dining in an atmosphere of peacefulness and tranquility. The restaurant is located at 10050 Robert Trent Jones Parkway, which is nestled between the distinctive luxury homes of Champion’s Club and the scenic, picturesque Fox Hollow villages. The décor reflects a love for the game of golf, and you are immediately drawn in by the casual and welcoming ambience. We decided on eating lunch here, and arrived around the noon hour. We seated ourselves, and were immediately greeted by our wonderful server, who promptly brought our drink order to us. Even though there was only one server in the tavern, she was able to take care of all the patrons who were there for the same reasons we were: to enjoy a delicious meal, surrounded by premier golf course views. After placing our order for 3 sandwiches, we were entertained by golfers putting and chipping their way onto the 18th green. Within 15 minutes of placing our order, our food arrived. The Ybor Cuban consisted of Smoked Ham, Genoa Salami, Mojo Pork, Big Eye Swiss, Pickle Chips and Grain Mustard Aioli on Authentic Cuban Bread. Served warm, this delectable sandwich had a satisfying crunch to it, and was chock full of flavor. The second sandwich was a Grilled Chicken Caesar Wrap, which included Grilled Chicken Breast, Crisp Romaine Hearts, Diced Vine Ripe Tomatoes, Shaved Parmesan and Creamy Parmesan Dressing. The chicken was served warm, and was complimented by the creamy dressing. The Romaine Hearts gave the wrap a nice snap, crackle and pop and added another element of flavor to this dish. We also were able to experience the Trinity Tuna Melt. Served warm on a Toasted Brioche Roll, this mouthwatering entrée included Grilled Albacore Tuna, Crisp Lettuce, Vine Ripe

42

Tomatoes, Avocado Applewood Smoked Bacon and Big Eye Swiss. The bacon was prepared to perfection, adding just the right amount of smoky essence to the meal. When ordering, we had opted for a side of coleslaw, instead of the French fries (upcharge of $1.00) or onion rings (upcharge of $2.00). The coleslaw was a hit, as it packed a crispy crunch and was not overpowering in its flavor. All three meals were pleasing to look at, as well as pleasing to the palate. Generous portions made the meals quite filling and most enjoyable. It’s always wonderful to experience the combination of enjoying a meal that tastes as good as it looks! The restaurant itself was spotless. From the tables to the carpeting, everything was pristine. The bar area also offers a healthy selection of options. The cocktail list showcases new interpretations of classics, as well as modern mixologist inspired originals. There is also an abundant selection of wine by the glass and/or bottle, and a beer list that is sure to satisfy all. The service we received was very good as well. Our server kept a keen eye on our soda’s and brought refills without being asked. Would I recommend Windows on the Green to my friends? Most definitely! In fact, I would even share this wonderful experience with my family as well. Now that’s saying something!! Overall rating: 1 being the worst – 5 being the best, I’d give this restaurant 4 houses out of 5.

Old McMicky’s Farm is Open Again! A young boy confined to a wheelchair is grinning ear to ear as he carefully pets a small piglet. Everyone around him is smiling, taking photos, and capturing the wonder of this heartfelt moment. It’s farm life at its best at Old McMicky’s Farm in Odessa! A section of the famous Camp Keystone, “Florida’s oldest continuously inhabited camp,” Old McMicky’s Farm provides visitors young & old the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of life on an American farm, complete with up-close interactions with barnyard animals, including pigs, ponies, cows, chickens, sheep, rabbits and more! Old McMicky’s Farm is not simply a petting zoo. Ever milked a cow? Test your milking skills at this fully operational farm. Children and adults always appreciate a visit to the Baby Barn where the young animals are nurtured. Plus, children especially love the barn maze and the hayrides! Originally opened to the public in 1991, Old McMicky’s Farm quickly became a favorite field trip destination for thousands of kids, parents, and seniors right here in Tampa Bay and from around the country. After years of neglect, the “Old Florida” landscape was purchased by Ralph Zuckerman of Palm Harbor, who chose to revitalize and re-open this most popular slice of Americana. The owner shared, "Today is such a fast-paced society, I wanted to create something where families can come and have a great time in more of an old-fashioned way.” As part of the Farm’s commitment to giving back to the community, Old McMicky’s Farm hosts a program known

as “1000 Kids,” as an outreach to children with disabilities and those facing other challenges. The program allows these children to visit the farm as a guest at no charge, so they receive an educational experience about farm life, and one that will empower them to continue gaining new life experiences. Old McMicky’s Farm’s 1000 Kids Program has the goal of welcoming 1,000 kids a year in the Tampa Bay area who are facing challenges to come out for a great day at their Farm and enjoy amazing moments with animals and activities in an atmosphere filled with love and fun. If you are a charitable organization serving children and are interested in visiting the Farm as part of the 1000 Kids program, you can contact Old McMicky"s for further details. Not only can visitors tour and explore Old McMicky’s, and picnic under the mighty oak trees, it is an amazing venue for private parties and corporate picnics, beautiful barn weddings, reunions and other events, offering a truly unique experience for everyone involved! The Farm is also a favorite for great children’s birthday parties. Old McMicky’s Farm is nestled comfortably next to Crescent Lake at 9612 Crescent Dr., Odessa. To schedule tours, events and parties, or to obtain further information, please call 813-9201948, or visit their website at www.oldmcmickys.com. Cool Treats for Hot Dogs Chilled Dog Treat Ideas and Recipes for Summer By Jenna Stregowski, RVT, About.com Guide

When temperatures rise outside, your dog can easily get overheated. Heatstroke is just one of the many summer hazards that can affect our dogs. There are many ways you can help keep your dog cool in the hot weather. Chilled or frozen dog treats are a great surprise for your dog. Not only will they help cool her off, they can also help relieve boredom when she is cooped up inside. Here are some ideas for healthy, cold treats your dog will love:

Doggie "Ice Cream" Real ice cream is not healthy for dogs. The excess dairy can cause GI upset, plus there is too much sugar. "Lick-a-lots" and "Frosty Paws" are two types of healthy dog "ice cream" that dogs love. But, if you want to save money, or would rather not run out to the store, you can make a version of them yourself at home. Here's how:

You will need: • 1 ripe banana • 8 ounces of plain yogurt (lowfat or non-fat, greek yogurt is ideal) • 1 tablespoon of peanut butter (creamy is best) Mix ingredients together in a blender or food processor. Pour mixture into three or four different small plastic containers and freeze overnight. You can adjust the amounts of each ingredient to get the taste and texture your dog likes best. Leave the treats in the container and serve one to your dog, but be sure to supervise (so he doesn't eat the container). These treats will last longer if you don't pop them out of their containers. Experiment with mix-ins like finely diced carrots, apples, or lean meat.
