Working Hard to Get Our Community Back on Their Feet By Debra Taylor-Tee

“He is not poor who has enough things to use. If it is well with your belly, chest and feet, the wealth of kings can give you nothing more.” Horace 65-8 B.C. Editors LETTER For the Love of Community “In every community, there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. Come up with a secret sign

Be a morning flirt

Light ‘em up

There’s nothing that creates a world-oftwo feeling more than your own private language. Create a secret gesture that means “You are adorable right now,” “I’ve got your back,” or simply, “I love you.” Use at parties, over a family game of Monopoly, or during that boring parent-teacher conference to make a connection without saying a word.

Start the day off right with a flirty gesture. Do it first thing before you go into busy mode and forget. Pinch his bum, kiss him on the lips (morning breath be damned) or just say, “Good morning, handsome.”

Everyone looks better -- and feels a little sexier -- in candlelight. So whip out the candles and share a meal in their soft glow, even if it’s leftovers in front of the TV.

Hold hands Whenever you’re hands-free -- strolling, in the car, sitting on the couch watching Idol -- make a point of holding hands. Innocent and sweet, it will remind you of that time long ago when just that was enough to get your heart racing.

Text it Break up the monotony of logisticscentered texts about what’s for dinner by sending a no-reason, just-because-Ilove-you text. Bonus points if you make it a little naughty.

www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Make a lunch date The planning of date night -- booking the sitter, dealing with teary goodbyes, finding the energy to stay up past dessert -- can be overwhelming. Take the fuss out of the equation by making a plan to meet for lunch instead. If your kids are in school, childcare won’t be a problem -- and if they aren’t, make a plan to swap kid duties with another mom for an hour or two.

Master your L.I.F.E.! Free Your Spirit!

every area of our life experience: Personal Relationships, Business, Health/Wellness, and Spiritual. Anyone at any age can fulfill their dreams of living a healthy, quality life by living these principles through our Master L.I.F.E. ACTION PLAN. The key is commitment.

When we are brought into this world, we are not given a manual on life. There are no instructions for how to love it, how to inspire in it, how to forgive, or even how to become enlightened within it. However, we ARE born with an innate knowledge and intuition that comes straight from the heart! Based on science and studies from the HeartMath Institute, there is a brain in the heart that connects with the brain in our head. This organic decision-making power is present 24/7! We can each tap into it to make more right choices in life. A major choice we all have to make is how to handle STRESS, the #1 cause for dis-ease and premature death. Did you know 5 minutes of anger, resentment, hatred, jealousy - anything negative - deposits 6-8 hours of damaging chemicals in the blood stream. One of these chemicals, Cortisol, considered the death hormone, lowers the immune system. The key is to learn how to “Master” the path for the mind and heart to communicate. When we accomplish this, our lives change forever. We exude peace, harmony, love, and forgiveness, which organically prompts us to pay it forward! After years of research, we, at Defy Aging, Inc., and HeartMath Institute, administered our own pilot studies on wisdom of the ages. Moreover, we have created The 7 Golden Principles and Master Key Codes that open the door to our personal freedom in

ElEgant EyEwEar at Precision Optical

Embarking upon 2014, our first action step is to reduce and eliminate stress! Try a Tai Chi/Chi Kung class and achieve immediate results within the first 5-10 minutes. (Crescent Oaks, Mon: 4-5 pm, open to all). Our mission statement is “Unlock Master Key Codes to life’s mysteries, and turn them into “MASTERIES!” Our mission is to make a difference in the lives of others. If you found yourself “stuck” last year, it is never too late to make better choices. You have nothing to lose but STRESS! Due to the continued success of our program, we are now offering a FREE consultation, a FREE Tai Chi Class, a FREE Seminar, and a FREE Lunch & Learn, as a sample. (Coming soon: a “Wisdom of the Ages” Meet-up). All are our gifts to you! Wishing you a HEALTHY, HAPPY, PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!!! 727-945-9223 · www.dennis-kelly.com · www.barbaramarville.com

When it’s Time to Have

“The Talk”

with Your Aging Parent Tarponspringshomecare.com

Sensitive life topics often make conversations difficult for families. Just as you can’t imagine needing a caregiver, your parent can’t imagine needing help with everyday life. The earlier you can have conversations with parents about aging, the easier it will be for both of you to accept help when the time is right. If you’re in your 40’s, chances are you have a parent that is still active and able to make life decisions. It’s also the best time to start talking about their future well-being. This conversation won’t be easy for either of you and there will likely be resistance. Approaching the subject with patience and tact will be key. Ask Questions: If you’ve observed something that’s troubling you, ask about it. Allow them to open up about what they think may be causing the issue. It’s important to speak with them as you would anyone else. Don’t communicate in a disrespectful manner or try to parent them. This only creates tension and could end the conversation immediately. Even though we mention taking talking to your parent when you’re in your 40’s, the sooner you have this conversation, the better. The main objective is to be proactive and open the lines of communication before a crisis happens. If you feel your loved one could benefit from the services provided by Home Helpers, contact us today for a FREE in-home care assessment. Be Kind to One Another “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails.” Corinthians 13: 4-8a When Mike & I were participating in pre-marital pastoral counseling, those were the verses I specifically requested as the liturgy for the ceremony. It clearly defines what love is, and what love is not. Of course, this explanation of love is one of many, it just happens to be my favorite. Being a newlywed, everything involves or revolves around love! However, I must confess, we are actively practicing the arts of compromise and communication, and thankfully, I raised a puppy named “Patience” for more than ten years! I’m kidding…kind of...

according to the scripture, love requires patience first. Love is not easy. I have neighbors that are not easy to love, but they are my neighbors, and we look out for each other. Therein lies the next meaning of love: kindness. If you have ever watched The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she always wraps up with the phrase, “Be kind to one another.” I love that. It is important to be kind to each other, be it in your home, at Publix, on the street corner, even when you are having a rotten day. A smile, a kind word, or simple act of kindness, are usually welcomed by the recipient. In my opinion, there’s really no better way to demonstrate love than by exercising kindness and patience on a regular basis. Try it. Worst case scenario, your stress levels decrease and you experience greater joy in life!

Patience is important in any relationship. Maybe that’s why,

PANTONE’S COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2014 By Wendy Donahue, Tribune Newspapers

Radiant Orchid The color purple would like to thank the global color authority Pantone for crowning it the color of the year for 2014. But it’s a color — Pantone 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, to be precise — so it can’t exactly talk. This blend of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones does, however, speak in murmurs of exoticism and enigma. “While the 2013 color of the year, Pantone 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to

intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute in a news release Thursday. “Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.” Pantone’s annual color coronation is one part cultural indicator and one part marketing forecast. The choice is influenced by movies in production, fashion runways, traveling exhibitions, new artists, technology, travel hot spots, sports and other socio-economic conditions. Pantone also minds a vast color library, including a Pantone Universe Paint Collection available at Lowe’s stores, to which it is adding Radiant Orchid. Pantone collaborates with various manufacturers to create formulas for use in

their products. Fashion brands including Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan, Juicy Couture and Yoana Baraschi already are incorporating Radiant Orchid into their spring 2014 collections, Pantone said, adding that the color’s rosy tones can flatter a number of skin tones. Look for the hue to carry deeper into fashion and beauty items, including nail and lip color, and to infiltrate home furnishings and paint. Radiant orchid is complementary to olive and deeper hunter greens, Pantone said, as well as turquoise, teal and light yellows. Its vibrance also enlivens neutrals such as gray, beige and taupe, Pantone said, serving to energize without overpowering — a quality we might all do well to emulate in 2014. wdonahue@tribune.com

Behind the Color Purple By Jeannie Matteucci | HGTV.com

Regal and eccentric, purple lends a layer of mystery to your design A Complex Color

It’s an unusual color used by unique people, says architectural color consultant Bonnie Krims.

Purple has a moody, enchanting, spiritual and mystical quality.

Purple, the color of royalty and creativity, is a combination of calm blue and exciting red. The color can add exotic flair to different rooms in your home. Purple can be dramatic or quiet, depending on the tone or shade. The

regal color can add richness to a space or drama to an architecturally simple room. Purple colors range from light lavenders to solid plums, and a few strategically placed purple accents may be all you need to create a whole new vibe for your surroundings. Use deep purple to create a stunning front entry. Light lavender-gray walls can add softness to a formal living room, while purple pastels mixed with modern art can make a teen’s bedroom feel hip and young.

Want to make a statement? Try neonpurple walls with gray stripes for a brave, edgy dining space. Make a room lively by pairing mid-tone purple with mustard yellows. A very light lavender with crisp white trim on cottage-style beadboard walls gives a touch of unexpected color to a room. If you want something more lush and sophisticated, use eggplant purple for the walls paired with high-gloss white trim. Purples combined with soft blues or greens create a very tranquil color scheme.

Exterior Options Purple can be used for the exterior of your home. A mid-tone purple with a dose of black can highlight the period details of Victorian architecture. Or try purple shutters, doors and window boxes to add cuteness and highlight details on a Cape Cod. Muted mulberry with white trim offers a colorful alternative to more mundane selections. But be aware that deeper purple colors absorb light and will fade and require repainting more frequently than other color selections, says architectural color consultant Bonnie Krims.

More Ways to Create a Mood With Purple • A claret color that combines raspberry with black can add richness to a room. • A dark, rich purple can provide a lovely backdrop to show off fine crystal and antique silver. • Use purple accessories to brighten up and add depth to a neutral color scheme. • To make a space feel happy, pair lavender with aqua or chartreuse. • Warm purples (like African violet) can make a dining room feel cozy. www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Plumb Smart Boost Your Automatic Dish Detergent If you’ve got especially dirty dishes and hard water, don’t add in extra detergent. It may undermine your efforts and leave a filmy residue behind. Instead, add a teaspoon of baking soda. It will naturally soften the water and improve how your detergent functions.

Beauty in Nature. Beauty in Local. In a world filled with “selfies” and Instagram, many people consider themselves photographers. I disagree vehemently with them. Simply owning a camera and fiddling with the flash does not give anyone the patience, attentiveness, or skill that professional photographers have. That being said, it is always possible to hone those skills by going out and practicing. I think there is something wonderful about photographing the environment around you. Not just the urban environment, but the natural one. Local photographer Steve Hyatt, sent us some photographs he took at some local parks. The quality and composure of the images is simply refreshing. The subject matter is even more wonderful. It can be easy to forget to go outside and celebrate the wonderful gifts nature has provided for us. When looking at Hyatt’s photos, I can feel the warmth of that afternoon sun and smell the clean air. So I implore potential photographers to stop taking photos of their lunches and their faces and focus on subject matter that has depth and life to it. Take the time to capture the perfect light or to wait for a dragonfly to land on a flower. There will be nothing more satisfying that capturing that perfect photograph. Well, maybe having it printed, framed, and hung in your house. After all, we cannot always go outside to nature, but capturing that moment in time can bring it into your home.

here are two emotions...you are either walking in the direction of love or the direction of fear…..choose.

The Butterfly Network is a place for you to ask questions and leave a comment at www.rdbusinesslifecoach. com. Valentines’ Day, a day to celebrate love. My older daughter calls it a “fake” holiday. Cards, candy, flowers & gifts are sent. Has it become yet but another consensus of being a part of it rather than a celebration of the love ? Are you feeling pressured to be a part of it, have a relationship, date, Valentine or you will be left out? What about all the love that is right there in front of you. A friend, a neighbor, a co -worker, the teller at the bank, a local business you frequent, a relative, and even a pet. I am in love with love, a hopeless romantic! Yet, it would be sad to wait for a day, a specific someone, to celebrate love. Every day in so many ways we give, receive, and express love. I wish for you this V-day that you feel loved and share love in all the moments of your life! - Coach Rose

Local Author Writes Children’s Books Helena Trangata

I met Brenda Darnley Martin at a Charity for Chics event in Pasco County. She quickly struck me as a woman who makes her presence known. She has written several children’s books: “The Treasure-Hunt Three and Judge Mia’s Decree” written for elementary age children emphasizes the inappropriateness of bullying behavior and the importance of getting help in a bullying situation It was dedicated to two Tampa Police officers who were killed in the line of duty the same week the art work was finished. These books are set in old Tampa Bay: “Freddie, Hector and Tish: The Treasure-Hunt Fish” (2008) “The Treasure-Hunt Fish and Miss Bernadette’s Wish” (2009). She volunteered for many years and certainly seems familiar with the needs of children! She is indeed a woman who cares and her work shows that! You may read some of her books pages at: http://brenmarcommunications.com/photo_gallery.html Brenda is a Speech & Communications graduate of St. Mary’s College and holds a Masters in Marketing and Management from the University of Notre Dame, both in South Bend, Indiana.

Eric Anderson, President of TBA Humorous, Musical, Sincere Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Synergy Ad Specialties, Inc., Eric Anderson serves as President of Trinity Business Association. of President of Leadership Pasco, which simply continues her efforts to achieve success on numerous levels! “I believe in the statement, ‘It takes a village.’ I see all the great potential and unique characteristics that make Pasco County great. In our world, relationships make the difference between successful community-building and community stagnation. I believe that Leadership Pasco is a most beneficial organization when it comes to encouraging leaders to make great things happen. Our board of directors works very hard to ensure that meaningful learning and networking occurs for all new leaders that join,” Heather assures.

But that’s not all. Tina is actively involved in fundraising and public relations efforts for Good Samaritan Health Clinic and New Port Richey’s Relay for Life. “I believe our community needs our help more than ever. With the economic changes we are facing today, the funding for nonprofits that serve those in need is constantly changing as the need for services increases. Fundraising and volunteering is very important to these organizations. I feel that if I have the time and resources to try and make a difference, then I need to help,” Tina humbly attests. Although her love of community is apparent, she happily shared, “I truly believe that our community is special! Even though it continues to grow, it still has a “small town” feel to me. Our community rallies together if there are people in need – we see that frequently at the many events and fundraisers held throughout the year. We live in a very giving community, and that’s what I really love about it!”

It is difficult to image anyone busier serving their community than Tina Shelton! Her list of active involvement in local organizations is extensive and clearly demonstrates her valuable contributions to the incredible people and businesses that make up Pasco County. Here goes… Tina is Vice President of Trinity Rotary Club and Public Relations Chair for Rotary District 6950; West Pasco Chamber of Commerce Chip Wichmanowski, President Board Secretary; Chairperson for of West Pasco Chamber of WPCC Young Professionals Group; Commerce Program Co-Chair and Immediate Dedicated, Creative, Personable Past Board President of Leadership www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

As current President of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, Chip Wichmanowski is working tirelessly to bring the Chamber together with the community, to build flourishing relationships and a vibrant economy! Chip has witnessed a business community that truly cares about their constituents. Regardless of the business size, the support for each other and the common good is what drives successful relationships and builds economies. His community service does not end with WPCC. Chip is also involved with St. James the Apostle Catholic Church, West Central Officials Association (FHSAA), Richey Suncoast Theatre, Longleaf Elementary Relay for Life, Longleaf Elementary Autism Walk, and he volunteers for the Council for Exceptional Children - Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities, and Suncoast Arts Festival. “West Pasco is a wonderful place to work, live and raise a family. It’s more than the outstanding yearround weather and the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities both on land and water. It’s more than the exemplary schools, churches, parks, and businesses that make this community great! To me, it’s the people!

West Pasco and the people that make up our community have a bond like none other I have seen in my 60 years of life. Our community is diverse yet similar. Lifetime residents and transplants from “up north” work, live and play together to produce an environment that I am proud to call home,” Chip boasts.

Dan Sullivan, Executive Director of Trinity /Odessa Chamber of Commerce Dad, Passionate, Learning

His father taught him many lessons in life, but when Dan Sullivan got the opportunity to work side-by-side with his Dad before he passed away, one lesson stood out. His father told him “Some people give of their money, some give of their time, but as a small business owner it is hard to give either of those, so those people should give of their talents.” That’s what Dan believes he has done. He has generously given of his talent for event-planning and marketing to help many organizations over the course of 25 years. Some of these organizations include The Angelus House, Center for Independence, Cotee River Bike Fest, Chasco Fiesta, Holiday Street Parade, Rooters Club, American Cancer Society, Pasco Music Festival, Metropolitan Ministries Pasco, and Alzheimer’s Tampa.

Currently, Dan serves as Executive Director of the newly established Trinity-Odessa Chamber of Commerce. His passion for serving and supporting local businesses and organizations, coupled with the growth and revived commercial and residential interests in the Trinity & Odessa communities, prompted him to take this support to a higher level with the incorporation of a Chamber of Commerce as a voice for the area, complete with progress updates and community events! “Residents and businesses that live and work in the Trinity-Odessa area are very proud of their community and it shows. The support for our schools and nonprofits is unmatched in other communities I have visited. I have already experienced collaboration from many organizations that want to partner with the Chamber of Commerce to improve the economy and quality of life for local businesses and residents,” Dan clarified. As parents, Dan and his wife, Jan, are also teaching some lessons. They are instilling a sense of community pride in their two boys, who are now old enough to learn what means to give back and pay it forward!

Barry Horvath, PA Financial Advisor of Horvath and Miller Advisors Group Leader, Giver, Compassionate As a financial advisor with Horvath and Miller Advisors Group, P.A., Barry Horvath has his finger on the economic pulse of the Pasco community! As a community leader, Barry founded West Pasco Business Association with the intention of establishing a support system of sorts between many local businesses, as a means of building the local economy. WPBA is different than other professional organizations of the kind in that there is no cost to join or remain a member! This can be especially important for businesses that do not have a budget for dues and fees required by some networking groups. Barry explains, “I understand during these hard economic times, many cannot afford fees associated with some business groups that are for profit. WPBA has no fees. It gives us the ability to put many local people

together to support each other right here in our own town, keeping money in our own local economy. By doing so, this offers them the opportunity to be charitable in supporting local fundraising events, such as the Grinch Event, for example.” Barry continued, “The people in the Trinity area are givers and seem to care about their clients right here in our home town. Why would anyone want to live anywhere else when we have it all right here? Why would anyone shop anywhere else and send their dollars to another economy when we truly have every service, store, vendor and provider right here in Trinity?”

We are a tight knit community of people who remained in town and care about our town, the businesses here and their owners. As Publisher of IT’s YOUR HOME Magazine, she has bridged a gap between local businesses and their potential customers by creating a beautiful periodical that provides affordable advertising for small, local businesses, while sharing informative content about life in West Pasco, as well as entertaining features to keep readers engaged. With a little help from some friends, Debbie founded the CASH MOB, a monthly event offering economic support to local small businesses. People gather on the designated Saturday morning each month armed with $10 to purchase something at the business being “Mobbed”. This has proven to be an enormous success, lifting spirits and boosting bottom-line profits for struggling business owners. Debbie explains, “Local businesses are the heartbeat of America. They employ the majority of our community and are the ones that support our local economy and give back to those in need. If we find a small business that needs a little boost, we all ban together to help keep them in business. This is what feeds their family and pumps dollars back into our community. I have a passion for marketing our small businesses and doing all I can to see them succeed.”

Dining & ENTERTAINMENT New Wedding & Events Centers Open to All Have your event with picturesque views and golf club prestige; membership not required. The Banquet and Events Centers at Wentworth Golf Club and the Crescent Oaks Country Club are open to all for wedding receptions & ceremonies, rehearsal dinners, quinceaneras, corporate meetings, reunions, anniversaries, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs and other events. You don’t have to be a golf club member, and the cost compares favorably with hotel and restaurant venues. Previously closed to only their private members, Wentworth and Crescent Oaks Golf Clubs now happily offer their polished services and upscale facilities to all, from simple meetings and parties to lavish wedding receptions and ceremonies. Events Director Sandy Isenhart coordinates your event with a well-trained catering staff, offering special menus and two distinct event venues. Wentworth Golf Club is a stately English-manor with an upscale, “Downtown Abbey” feel to it, yet is very hospitable and friendly. The tastefully decorated dining room overlooks the golf course with a 2-story cathedral window and French doors opening to a covered Veranda that is perfect for an

outdoor cocktail reception or just a nice place to relax with guests. With gold chandeliers, rich paneling, high ceilings, a fireplace, an inlaid dance floor and comfortable decorator chairs, the banquet room is impressive yet intimate. Director Jean Paul Jurilli and Cordon Bleu trained Chef Jeff Northrop and their staff make delicious appetizers, meals, and desserts to your taste. The facility and food will exceed your expectations, not your budget. Crescent Oaks Country Club is a larger, more modern, Mediterranean style clubhouse with an impressive 2-story entry foyer, an elegant banquet room, beautiful covered porch, and a new covered outdoor event pavilion. Guests pull up to the circular drive, view the lush landscaping, and enter the foyer with its chandeliers, fireplace, and cocktail reception setting. A mahogany “hideaway” bar with hi-top tables and padded booths is adjacent, a perfect spot to grab a drink with a guest. The long banquet room has full-length windows that give every guest a view of the golf course and spectacular night-lit landscaping. Nelson Blasco, Food and Beverage Director, choreographs exquisite meals and celebrations with Chef Derrick Roese. The facilities are beautiful, the food is great, and the staff will really make your guests happy and catered to. Wentworth and Crescent Oaks are family owned and operated by Ace Golf. The clubs are open to the public and offer golf, social and seasonal memberships. Everyone is invited to stop in and play golf, enjoy a meal or bring a client in to enjoy their restaurants. The Girls with a Heart

The PACE Center for Girls offers girls ages 11-17 who are struggling at home, at school or in the community a safe, supportive environment where they can focus on their academics and personal goals. Some girls have problems at school, others have family instability and conflict, and still others have been victims of abuse or neglect. All our girls come to us for different reasons, but they all had the same needPACE. The PACE Center works closely with the Pasco County School System to provide a strong academic program w i t h s m a l l c l a s s sizes,

individual academic goals, and weekly academic advising. It also offers strong social services support that includes individual counseling goals and sessions, mandatory monthly parent meetings, and referrals to community resources. Working together, our academic and counseling staff gives our girls the opportunity to make positive, lasting changes. A “Wheely” Great Organization Wheelchairs 4 Kids Jack’s Mom can now bathe him in a bathtub, not with a hose in the backyard. Angelica can now go to the mall with her friends, now that the lift for her wheelchair has been repaired. Wayne’s Grandmother can safely transport him into and out of the house, thanks to the 30-ft ramp that was constructed. These success stories and so many more are the driving force of Madeline Robinson and her nonprofit organization, Wheelchairs 4 Kids. Madeline recognized the dire needs of disabled children and teens she was helping through other organizations in West Tampa Bay. “I saw so many children in wheelchairs that were too small for them and patched up with duct tape,” she said. “I wondered why no one was doing anything to help them.” So she did. With the support of her husband, Lonnie, Madeline set up an office in their home, and Wheelchairs 4 Kids was born!

campuses, residential and vehicular modifications for safer transitioning, or therapeutic equipment for strengthening and rehabilitation. In 2012, Wheelchairs 4 Kids was instrumental in changing the lives of 30 young people.”My lofty goal is to help every child with a disability,” said Madeline, “but realistically, I would like to help 50 children a year.” She and her organization are well on their way! Wheelchairs 4 Kids is located at 1976 S Pinellas Ave. in Tarpon Springs. For information on Wheelchairs 4 Kids or to make a donation, call (727) 946-0963, or visit www. wheelchairs4kids.org.

The goal & mission of Wheelchairs 4 Kids is “to give every child with mobility challenges the best opportunity to live life to its fullest.” Thanks to generous donations and manufacturers discounts obtained by the organization, their goal is being met and exceeded! Children & teens are provided the assistance they need, be it a motorized wheelchair for navigating school
