LETTERS FROM THE DIRECTORS As we embark on our 2018–2019 season as one of the leading performing arts organizations in South Central Indiana, we continue to uphold our high standard of quality: quality in the shows that we select, quality in the services that we provide, and quality in the interactions that we have with each and every patron of IU Auditorium. This standard has existed since we opened our doors 1941—to provide students and their families, IU faculty and staff, and members of the community a place to interact with, and enrich their lives through, the performing arts. Our 2017–2018 season was one full of diverse, world-class entertainment, including Broadway shows, orchestra performances, comedy, jazz, and fan favorites. From a hilarious conversation with John Cleese moderated by IU President Michael McRobbie, to an improvised fusion of visual art and jazz with the Birdland All-Stars, IU Auditorium hosted 65,616 ticketed patrons within our facility. The past season would not have been possible without the generous support we receive from patrons, sponsors, donors, and the university. With this support, we have had the privilege of providing opportunities to engage with IU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the local community, through a diverse array of entertainment and performance. Thank you for another fantastic season and we look forward to seeing you this season!
Doug Booher Executive Director As a performing arts institution, we strive to not only to present exceptional performances to the IU and Bloomington communities, but also enriching and impactful programs and experiences. Whether in the form of a masterclass, a pre-show talk, or a conversation with students, we are in constant pursuit of new ways in which we can positively impact our community. Thanks to our wonderful donors and sponsors, we had 2,300 participants attend 2017–2018 season engagement activities. We were able to provide opportunities for the students of Fairview Elementary School to engage with the acrobatic dancers of Diavolo and the musicians from the Minnesota Orchestra through in-school visits. Our campus and IU student community had the opportunity to learn from members of various visiting productions throughout the year with activities including stage production tours, wardrobe and fashion design demonstrations, and dance, orchestral, and jazz masterclasses. Over 600 children participated in Kids Night on Broadway last April. And nearly 200 children and their families from various local organizations were able to witness The Wizard of Oz with the Give the Magic ticket program—many experienced the arts live for the very first time! We at IU Auditorium are constantly trying to better ourselves as a staff and exceed the expectations we set forth to provide beneficial opportunities to the community around us. Simply put, we are a team of compassionate individuals dedicated to one mission: to create engaging world-class arts and event experiences at IU. Here’s to a new season of bigger goals and even brighter opportunities.

1 GREAT YEAR! 4
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT At IU Auditorium, it is a priority to ensure that students have an outstanding college experience at Indiana University. One way we do that is by making the IU Auditorium experience affordable to students by offering up to 50 percent off the price of season events. We also offer exceptional educational programming and mentoring.
Educational Programming Our educational programming connects students with visiting artists, giving them opportunities to interact with professionals, and occasionally even the celebrities that grace our stage. These engagements range from masterclasses and panel discussions to open rehearsals, pre-show talks, wardrobe walkthroughs, and backstage production tours. Students not only find these interactions informative and inspiring but also practical in terms of their own career goals and activities.
Mentorship Several IU Auditorium staff members serve as mentors for students, both graduate and undergraduate. This year, we: invited Arts Administration students to aid in the planning and execution of our presentation of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, helped students market and present numerous Union Board lectures and events, and worked alongside Zeta Tau Alpha to present Big Man on Campus as well as the IU Panhellenic Association in bringing Erin Andrews to campus for impactful discussion.
Learning Laboratory Although learning for the sake of learning has its own intrinsic rewards, participation in real-world situations deepens students’ understanding and experience. IU Auditorium creates opportunities for students to experience the live event industry by training them in roles such as volunteer ushers, box office clerks, and guest services personnel. We also employ student interns so they can obtain knowledge and real-world skills in marketing, development, event management, and educational outreach. These opportunities allow students to explore career paths and build their resume experience while establishing essential connections with potential employers.

ARTIST ENGAGEMENT When bringing acts to IU Auditorium we strive to ensure Indiana University student patrons have an opportunity to have meaningful interactions with visiting artists. Events such as masterclasses, side-by-side rehearsals, and stage production walkthroughs offer the chance of a lifetime for students to learn from professionals in their field. Quite often, thanks to the generosity of our visiting artists, we also offer schoolchildren and community members the opportunity to meet and interact with musicians from orchestras, cast and crew from theatre groups, and performers from dance companies. In total, over 2,300 participants attended in our 2017–2018 season engagement activities!

Members of Diavolo conducted a contemporary dance masterclass, classical ballet students participated in a dance masterclass in conjunction with Cinderella, and cast members from Motown led a “Dancing in the Streets” masterclass.
The Minnesota Orchestra led a plethora of instrumental masterclasses including mock musical auditions and orchestral repertoire classes. IU music students from all sections of the orchestra benefitted from these educational classes, including students from the woodwind, brass, string, and percussion departments.
These events consisted of panel discussions, lecture demonstrations, workshops, and school visits. Highlights from last season include a panel discussion with The Knights on arts administration and career development, a demonstration by members of Diavolo at a local Bloomington elementary school, and a pre-show performance and discussion on the music of Motown.
Cast and crew interactions include events like meet and greets, preand post-show Q & A talks, stage and wardrobe talkbacks, and side-byside orchestral rehearsals. Nearly every performance group or guest interacted with us in 2017–2018!

IU PRIDE While our beautiful historic facility on the Fine Arts Plaza and our welcoming staff are the face of IU to thousands of patrons, IU Auditorium is also highly respected and regarded for how it supports many other IU entities. We have a proud history of being of service to student organizations, and we also serve as a platform to help promote distinguished faculty and their contributions to society. Our staff members possess specialized skills in event presentation and we regularly extend this expertise beyond our four walls. The flawless execution of large-scale ceremonies, athletic events, and musical concerts—and your enjoyment of these—is our reward!
IU Auditorium Student Scholarship Throughout the 2017–2018 season, IU Auditorium continued its tradition of serving as an educational and professional resource for students. In addition to offering opportunities for handson venue management, we provide academic scholarships to five qualified students each year. The IU Auditorium Student Scholarship honors the legacy of retired IU Auditorium and Indiana Memorial Union Executive Director, Winston Shindell. A fierce advocate for students, Shindell worked to formalize the IU Auditorium experience for students to gain practical knowledge by working with IU Auditorium staff. Congratulations to our 2017–2018 recipients, each a sterling example of the IU Auditorium student experience: Esmeralda Acevedo Lexie Borja Aaliyah Darling Juan Orrego Dakota Suomela
IU Auditorium +1 Scholarship Established in 2014, the IU Auditorium Alumni Association (IUAAA) celebrates a shared connection between Hoosiers of all ages formed through participation with the IU Auditorium as student managers, ushers, box office clerks, and more. The IUAAA works to pass on all that they learned during their shared experiences as student workers at IU Auditorium through the granting of the +1 Scholarship. Supported by the generous gifts of Auditorium alumni, the +1 Scholarship was created in honor of IU Auditorium Executive Director, Doug Booher, and his +1 customer service philosophy. The inaugural +1 scholarship was awarded at our 2018 Spring Banquet and was presented to Ryan Maddox who exemplified the extraordinary customer service efforts that keep the Auditorium in such high regard.

Interdepartmental Support And Collaboration Did you know that IU Auditorium provides support services for and works alongside many other IU entities? For example, box office services are used to support ticketing needs for the IU Cinema and Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance, as well as regional IU campuses; our department of IU Events Services provides guest service and staffing for all IU Athletics and other University events; staff in marketing and event management work alongside Union Board to present events; and we collaborate with departments like the IU Jacobs School of Music to design residencies that connect artists with IU students.

COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT IU Auditorium provides a direct connection between the residents of South Central Indiana and Indiana University. We are proud to be the face of IU to the thousands of community members who enter our doors each season. But we don’t do it alone—through cooperative relationships with touring artists and by joining forces with local non-profit organizations, we enhance individuals’ lives and learning at no cost to them.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING
GIVE THE MAGIC
IU AUDITORIUM GIVES
For nearly every season performance, we provide supplemental programming such as school visits, lecture demonstrations, and pre- and post-show talks. These popular activities deepen the audience’s understanding and appreciation of the art form and subject matter of season events, which translates into a positive connection with IU Auditorium as well as the university.
A program which began in 2013, Give the Magic continued to provide underserved members of our community access to the Auditorium and its programming. This season, we shared 182 tickets with children and their caregivers from six local social service agencies to enjoy The Wizard of Oz.
In 2017–2018, IU Auditorium was again a presenting partner with Lotus Festival to help bring global music artists to Bloomington. We also partnered with community organizations to collect donations for the needy, including a toy collection in partnership with Christmas for the Kids, Inc. in conjunction with our holiday season event Chimes of Christmas.
Kids Night on Broadway was held prior to The Wizard of Oz showing.

“The IU Auditorium has always provided me with amazing, enjoyable experiences as both a student and an employee. My job with Educational Outreach has allowed me to become much more involved in the Bloomington community, and I have learned so much about arts marketing in the process. The friendly and supportive environment of the IU Auditorium continually fosters my growth as an educator while providing me with lifelong experiences and friendships along the way.” - Molly Smit, IU Jacobs School of Music student and IU Auditorium Educational Outreach Intern IU students participate in a wardrobe demonstration with Kinky Boots.
“I’d like to share that it really was a special experience for fashion design students to be put in touch with Diavolo because it provided insight into different career opportunities for designers that we may not otherwise be aware of it. Our students were very excited to hear about the show and see a bit of costuming!” –Sierra Mack-Erb, IU Fashion Design student Minnesota Orchestra members led masterclasses with Jacobs School of Music students.

VENUE MANAGEMENT Other Venues Beyond IU Auditorium, we oversee and staff other venues on campus including Presidents Hall, Conrad Prebys Amphitheatre, and Woodburn Hall. These additional campus venues hosted over 17,000 guests in 2017–2018 for events including lectures, weddings, receptions, university ceremonies, and more.
Presidents Hall Presidents Hall is located inside historic Franklin Hall. We welcomed over 11,000 guests at events inside Presidents Hall last year. Events were highlighted by lectures from two Pulitzer Prize winners including author Viet Thanh Nguyen and journalist David Finkel as well as a conversation between Whoopi Goldberg and Glenn Close as part of U Bring Change 2 Mind.
Conrad Prebys Amphitheatre Conrad Prebys Amphitheatre is nestled between Bryan House and the Jordan River just steps away from the front door of IU Auditorium. Approximately 4,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members witnessed the 2017 solar eclipse as part of ‘CelestFest’ on the first day of classes. The amphitheater also featured concerts from musicians from the Jacobs School of Music and a film series hosted by the Indiana Memorial Union Board.
Woodburn Hall
Conrad Prebys Ampitheatre
Our newest space, we began hosting university-related events inside Woodburn Hall 100 in February. The space hosted a handful of events in 2017–2018 including Mary-Claire King, recipient of the Hermann J. Muller Award for genetics; William D. “Bro” Adams, the former chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities; and a leadership summit for the Hudson & Holland program.
IU Auditorium Represented Globally by Booher Our Executive Director, Doug Booher, served as the chair of the Board of Directors for the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) in 2017–2018 representing Indiana University on a global scale. Representing public assembly venues from around the globe, IAVM’s active members include managers and senior executives from auditorium, arenas, convention centers, exhibit halls, stadiums, performing arts centers, university complexes, and amphitheaters.

AIN’T TOO PROUD PREMIERE Ain’t Too Proud Starting in May and culminating on June 6, 2018 with the Midwest premiere performance, IU Auditorium had the unique opportunity to host the pre-Broadway production of Berkley Repertory Theatre’s Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations. Our patrons were able to experience a rare pre-Broadway debut performance live on our stage. Preparation for the production’s arrival began in early May before the show’s crew arrived to begin loading in equipment to build the stage for rehearsals. The show’s production elements arrived on 11 semi-trailers, each 53 feet long. Once the load-in of physical components, scenery, lighting, audio, video, wardrobe, automation, and all aspects of the production were installed, dry tech rehearsals began. Dry tech rehearsals signaled the entrance of stage management and the creative team of the show. They oversaw the process of running technical cues (lighting, audio effects, scene changes, etc.) that made up the performance without any cast on stage. The Ain’t Too Proud cast then arrived in Bloomington on May 29 to begin officially rehearsing the show in full. With it being a new production, the cast had to orient themselves with the updated scenery and their interaction with the mechanized elements of the production for the first time on our stage. Rehearsals then progressed with music and choreography as each scene was worked through in great detail with the production’s creative team on site. The three weeks of preparation behind closed doors ended with the Midwest debut performance of Ain’t Too Proud right here at IU Auditorium to a delighted audience. From here, the production opened at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. before stops in Los Angeles and Toronto and will open on Broadway in the Spring of 2019.

THANK YOU DONORS Thank You Donors! Thank you for sharing your passion for the performing arts. This season offered a variety of impactful programming, and we thank you for making it all possible. From moments of high artistry on stage, to educational opportunities behind the scenes and in classrooms, your support has affected the lives of our students and community. Thank you for making the 2017–2018 IU Auditorium season a success.
Meaningful Impact Because of the generosity of more than 570 IU Auditorium individual and corporate supporters, Give the Magic shared 182 tickets to see The Wizard of Oz with children and their caregivers from six local social service organizations, and 2,300 students and community members were inspired by 48 educational programs lead by world-renowned artists. Our endowment support grew this season with the establishment of the Joyce and Jim Grandorf Friends of IU Auditorium Fund and the Fred and Beth Cate Auditorium Fund, both intended to support the programming and legacy of IU Auditorium. The Martha Novak and Marilyn Goerner Theater Experience Fund was also established with a mission to provide first-generation IU students with tickets to the IU Auditorium season so that they experience, first-hand, the transformative power of the performing arts.
Goals Reached To our donors and corporate partners, we thank you for your integral role in achieving IU Auditorium’s vision for the 2017–2018 season. Your support exceeded our expectations as we not only met, but surpassed our fundraising goals for the year. Your gifts connected K–12 and university students to the performing arts, provided student scholarships and professional development opportunities, and inspired community members through our performances. Thank you for making it all possible!

“Every single person that you come in contact with from the person meeting you at the bus, the bus driver, the ushers etc. are nothing but the best. They make you feel so important. I can’t really think of anything that you could do to make the whole experience any better than what it already is. Thank you for making such great entertainment.” — IU Auditorium Patron
