LETTERS FROM THE DIRECTORS Each and every year we strive to present exceptional performances and impact the IU and Bloomington communities with enriching programs and experiences. Thanks to our wonderful donors and sponsors, we had over 5,500 participants for our engagement activities this past year. Whether a masterclass, pre-show talk, or interaction with students, we are in constant pursuit of new ways in which we can positively influence the community and share the magic of the performing arts. Our campus and IU student community had dozens of opportunities to learn from members of visiting productions throughout the year, with activities including backstage tours, a panel discussion on the music business, as well as contemporary dance, orchestral, jazz, and artist masterclasses. Our biggest single engagement activity in the last 20 years happened this past season when we hosted nearly 2,000 seventh and eighth graders from Monroe County Community School Corporation for a daytime performance from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. We also facilitated interactions with the performers from ELF The Musical and The Cleveland Orchestra for Fairview Elementary School students, and Mariachi Los Camperos spent a morning with the K–12 students and parents of La Escuelita Para Todos. The staff of IU Auditorium continue to work hard to find new ways to exceed expectations and provide exceptional and unique opportunities to our community. Simply put, we are a team of compassionate and dedicated individuals focused on one mission: to create engaging worldclass arts and event experiences at IU. Here’s to a new season of bigger goals and even brighter opportunities as we celebrate IU’s Bicentennial!
Maria Talbert Managing Director As we enter the Bicentennial year for Indiana University, we have a unique opportunity to reflect on our place as one of the leading performing arts organizations in South Central Indiana. We continue to uphold our high standards of quality: in the shows that we select, the services that we provide, and the interactions we have with each and every patron. Since we opened our doors 1941, we have strived to provide IU students, faculty, staff, and members of our surrounding communities a place to enrich their lives through the performing arts. Our 2018–2019 season was one full of diverse, world-class entertainment. From a stunning performance from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to the comic musings of Monty Python’s Spamalot, IU Auditorium hosted 51,993 ticketed patrons within our facility. The past season would not have been possible without the generous support we receive from patrons, sponsors, donors, and the university. Thank you for another fantastic season and we look forward to seeing you this season as we celebrate Indiana University’s Bicentennial!

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT At IU Auditorium, it is our priority to ensure that students have an outstanding college experience at Indiana University. One way we do that is by making the IU Auditorium experience accessible to students by offering up to 50 percent off the price of season events. We also offer exceptional educational programming and mentoring.
Educational Programming Our educational programming connects students with visiting artists, giving them opportunities to interact with professionals, and occasionally even the celebrities that grace our stage. These engagements range from masterclasses and panel discussions to open rehearsals, pre-show talks, wardrobe walkthroughs, and backstage production tours. Students not only find these interactions informative and inspiring but also practical in terms of their own career goals and activities.
Mentorship Several IU Auditorium staff members and departments serve as mentors for students, both graduate and undergraduate. This year, we aided Union Board with logistics and the financial components of their annual Welcome Week Block Party and also helped the students from TEDxIndianaUniversity in hosting their annual event. Also, this season the IU Auditorium Alumni Association kicked off its very own mentorship program, working to connect current IU Auditorium students with IU Auditorium alumni from around the country for career, education, and professional advice.
Learning Laboratory Although learning for the sake of learning has its own intrinsic rewards, participation in real-world situations deepens students’ understanding and experience. IU Auditorium creates opportunities for students to experience the live event industry by training them in roles such as volunteer ushers, box office clerks, and guest services personnel. We also employ student interns so they can obtain knowledge and real-world skills in marketing, development, event management, and educational outreach. These opportunities allow students to explore career paths and build their resume experience while establishing essential connections with potential employers.

ARTIST ENGAGEMENT When bringing acts to IU Auditorium we strive to ensure Indiana University student patrons have an opportunity to have meaningful interactions with visiting artists. Events such as masterclasses, side-by-side rehearsals, and stage production walkthroughs offer the chance of a lifetime for students to learn from professionals in their field. Quite often, thanks to the generosity of our visiting artists, we also offer schoolchildren and community members the opportunity to meet and interact with musicians from orchestras, cast and crew from theatre groups, and performers from dance companies. In total, over 5,500 participants attended our 2018–2019 season engagement activities!

Cast members from Chicago conducted a female roles masterclass, IU student comedy groups participated in a comedy masterclass with cast from Monty Python’s Spamalot, and company members from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater led a contemporary dance masterclass for IU contemporary dance students.
The Cleveland Orchestra led a plethora of instrumental masterclasses. IU music students from all sections of the orchestra benefitted from these educational classes, including students from woodwind, brass, string, and percussion departments.
These events consisted of panel discussions, lecture demonstrations, workshops, and school visits. Highlights from last season include ELF The Musical cast members leading a music class at a local Bloomington elementary school, Straight No Chaser taking part in a music business panel discussion with Kelley School of Business students and faculty, and numerous topical pre-show discussions by IU faculty members.
Cast and crew interactions include events like pre- and post-show Q&A talks, stage and wardrobe talkbacks, and side-by-side orchestral rehearsals. Nearly every performance group or guest artist interacted with us in 2018–2019!

IU PRIDE While our beautiful historic facility on the Fine Arts Plaza and our welcoming staff are the face of IU to thousands of patrons, IU Auditorium is also highly respected and regarded for how it supports many other IU entities. We have a proud history of being of service to student organizations, and we also serve as a platform to help promote distinguished faculty and their contributions to society. Our staff members possess specialized skills in event presentation and we regularly extend this expertise beyond our four walls. The flawless execution of large-scale ceremonies, athletic events, and musical concerts—and your enjoyment of these—is our reward!
IU Auditorium Student Scholarship During the 2018–2019 season, IU Auditorium continued its tradition of serving as an educational and professional resource for students. In addition to offering opportunities for hands-on venue management, we provide academic scholarships to five qualified students each year. The IU Auditorium Student Scholarship honors the legacy of retired IU Auditorium and Indiana Memorial Union Executive Director, Winston Shindell. A fierce advocate for students, Shindell created a professional environment that enabled students to gain practical knowledge by working directly with IU Auditorium staff. Congratulations to our 2018–2019 recipients, each a sterling example of the students IU Auditorium has had the honor of working with: Lexie Borja Mallory Carnes Rachel Parks Arielle Parre Lydia Stern
IU Auditorium +1 Scholarship Established in 2014, the IU Auditorium Alumni Association (IUAAA) celebrates a shared connection between Hoosiers of all ages that formed through participation with the IU Auditorium as student managers, ushers, box office clerks, and more. The IUAAA works to pay forward all that they learned during their common experiences as students working at IU Auditorium through the formation of the +1 Scholarship. The +1 Scholarship was created in honor of IU Auditorium Executive Director, Doug Booher, and his +1 customer service philosophy. This year’s +1 scholarship was awarded at our 2019 Spring Banquet and was presented to Mary Lyon who exemplified the extraordinary customer service efforts that keep the Auditorium in such high regard.

Interdepartmental Support And Collaboration Did you know that IU Auditorium provides critical support services for and works alongside many other IU entities? For example, our box office supports the ticketing needs for the IU Cinema and Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance, as well as regional IU campuses; our department of IU Events Services provides world-class guest service and staffing for all IU Athletics and many other university events; staff in marketing and event management work alongside Union Board and the African American Arts Institute to present events; and we collaborate with departments like the IU Jacobs School of Music to design residencies that connect artists with IU students.

COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT IU Auditorium directly connects the residents of South Central Indiana and Indiana University. We are proud to be the face of IU to the thousands of community members who enter our doors each season. But we don’t do it alone—through cooperative relationships with touring artists and by joining forces with local non-profit organizations, we give back to the community that has given us so much support since our founding in 1941. It is important to us that we enhance the lives of those that live in our community and make South Central Indiana a great place to call home.

For nearly every season performance, we provide supplemental programming such as school visits, lecture demonstrations, and pre- and post-show talks. These popular activities enhance our audience members’ understanding and appreciation for the worldclass entertainment presented by IU Auditorium.
A program which began in 2013, Give the Magic continues to improve accessibility for underserved members of our community to the Auditorium and its programming. This season, we shared 101 tickets with children and their caregivers from six local social service agencies to enjoy the acrobatic feats of Reversible in April.
In 2018–2019, IU Auditorium was again a presenting partner with the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival to help bring global music artists to Bloomington. We also partnered with community organizations to collect donations for the needy, including a toy collection in partnership with Toys for Tots in conjunction with our holiday presentations of ELF the Musical, Chimes of Christmas, and Straight No Chaser.

Through our Give the Magic program, 101 children and caregivers had the chance to experience the acrobatic feats of Reversible.
“I just want to say that the visit from The Cleveland Orchestra was wonderful for the kids. It was a very rich experience and (the musicians) prepared so much for them. Their feedback to the students was extremely helpful and thoughtful. Thank you for this rich opportunity.” – Sarah Maggie Olivo, Fairview Elementary Music and Arts Coordinator

“I didn’t have a favorite part. I loved all of it! The dancing and dancers were very inspiring and it was so cool. If I didn’t see it myself I wouldn’t have thought it was real. The dancers were so talented. Thank you for letting us visit!” – Bloomington Middle School student after witnessing Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Families attend Kids Night on Broadway at ELF The Musical.

VENUE MANAGEMENT Other Venues Beyond IU Auditorium, we oversee and staff other venues on campus including Presidents Hall, Conrad Prebys Amphitheater, and Woodburn Hall. These additional campus venues hosted over 13,000 guests in 2018–2019 for events including lectures, weddings, receptions, university ceremonies, and more.
Presidents Hall Presidents Hall is located inside historic Franklin Hall. We welcomed over 10,000 guests at events inside Presidents Hall last year. Events were highlighted by a Patten Lecture featuring pioneering biologist Gene Robinson and journalist/media personality and IU alum Catt Sadler speaking on women in leadership.
Conrad Prebys Ampitheatre
Conrad Prebys Amphitheatre Conrad Prebys Amphitheater is nestled between Bryan House and the Jordan River just steps away from the front door of IU Auditorium. The amphitheater featured the Jacobs School of Music and WFIU’s annual Jazz in July events, a film series hosted by the Indiana Memorial Union Board, and Big Red Eats Green, a sustainable food festival.
Woodburn Hall This space hosted a handful of events in 2018–2019 including the Vietnamese Interacting as One Conference and the Hudson and Holland Summit—this year marked the first year at IU for both events.
Weddings were one of many events hosted by these additional campus venues.

AUDITORIUM KIDS ON CAMPUS AUDITORIUM KIDS ON CAMPUS A momentous highlight from the 2018–2019 season was when we hosted nearly 2,000 seventh and eighth grade students from Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) for a daytime performance by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater on March 20, 2019. This event was by far the single largest educational outreach event hosted by IU Auditorium in the last 20 years. All three MCCSC middles schools, including Batchelor, Jackson Creek, and Tri-North, attended this special performance inside our theatre. The students who witnessed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s daytime program were treated to three performance pieces from the company, including Alvin Ailey’s most celebrated work, Revelations. The students also participated in a call and response dance led by a member of the company. This school performance marked the first event for our Auditorium Kids on Campus initiative. This program aims to provide annual K–12 programming for local students to experience the arts and the opportunity to interact with world-renowned artists to enhance their academic and personal development. We are excited to grow this event in the coming years with the support of Smithville Foundation, Southern Indiana Physicians Riley Physicians Pediatrics, and IU Auditorium Circle of Friends.

THANK YOU DONORS Thank You Donors! Thank you for your dedication to the performing arts. This season featured quality performances that allowed us to touch the lives of so many. We are so deeply thankful for your support of our mission. From moments of high artistry on stage to educational opportunities behind the scenes and in classrooms, your support has had an immeasurable impact in the lives of our students and community. Thank you for making the 2018–2019 IU Auditorium season a success.
Meaningful Impact Because of the generosity of more than 623 IU Auditorium individual and corporate supporters, Give the Magic shared 101 tickets to see Reversible with children and their caregivers from six local social service organizations, and 5,520 students and community members were inspired by 68 educational programs led by world-renowned artists and community experts. In the spring of 2019, IU Auditorium brought seventh and eighth grade students and the artists of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater together for a school-day performance on the Auditorium stage. In total, nearly 2,000 students from three Monroe County middle schools attended this stunning, interactive performance. Thank you for your growing support of IU Auditorium and these initiatives!
Goals Reached To our donors and corporate partners, we thank you for your critical role in achieving IU Auditorium’s vision for the 2018–2019 season. Your support exceeded our expectations as we not only met, but surpassed our fundraising goals for the year. Your gifts connected K–12 and university students to the performing arts, provided student scholarships and professional development opportunities, and inspired community members through our performances. Thank you for making it all possible!
