What a year it has been. Although our 2019–2020 season was cut short due to the pandemic, we were still able to welcome thousands through our doors (and break a couple box office records along the way!) and remain committed to staying connected with our audiences through a variety of virtual engagement opportunities that we continue to build and enhance through this current, and unique, 2020–2021 season. Before the shut-down, we were well on our way to having one of the most successful seasons yet, both through ticket sales as well as through the variety of outreach programs that we were able to facilitate alongside our campus and artist partners. The Book of Mormon and Les Misérables now rank as the first and second-best selling Broadway shows, respectively, in IU Auditorium history. And thanks to our wonderful donors and sponsors, we were able to reach over 5,500 participants through 61 engagement activities this past year. Whether a masterclass, pre-show talk, or artist Q&A for students, we are in constant pursuit of new and exciting ways in which we can positively interact with the community and spread the joys of theatre and the arts.
LETTERS FROM THE DIRECTORS
The staff of IU Auditorium continues to work hard to find new ways to exceed expectations and provide exceptional and unique opportunities to our community. Simply put, we are a team of passionate and dedicated individuals focused on one mission: to create engaging world-class arts and event experiences at IU.
M A R I A TA LB ERT MANAGING DIRECTOR
As we are in the midst of an unprecedented 2020–2021 academic year, we have focused on upholding our high standard of quality in the events that we select, in the services that we provide, and in the interactions that we have with every person. Since we opened our doors in 1941, we have strived to provide all IU and Bloomington community members with a place to enrich their lives through the performing arts. Although it was unfortunately cut short, our 2019–2020 season and IU Bicentennial celebration was one full of world-class entertainment. The season included four Broadway productions, two of which were our two best-selling Broadway shows in the history of IU Auditorium, along with music, dance, comedy, and orchestral performances. Over this past year, IU Auditorium was able to host 64,721 ticketed patrons within our facility and 93,525 total guests were served among all the venues we manage. This past season would not have been possible without the generous support we receive from patrons, sponsors, donors, and the university. Thank you for another fantastic season, and we look forward to seeing you in person soon as we work towards safely providing live arts experiences once again.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
At IU Auditorium, it is our priority to ensure that students have an outstanding college experience. We strive not only to make our venue accessible to students but to facilitate a deeper engagement with and appreciation for the arts. We achieve this through offering steep discounts to IU Bloomington students, as well as through educational programs and mentorships, allowing us to interact with students and provide relevant experiences outside of the programs themselves.
E DUCATIO N A L P RO G RA M M I NG With each act that we bring to IU Auditorium, we aim to provide Indiana University students with relevant educational programming. These programs range from masterclasses and Q&As to wardrobe walkthroughs and backstage production tours. They frequently allow students the chance of a lifetime to meet and learn from visiting artists and professionals that have experience in their field of study. Not only do students find these interactions informative and inspiring, but artists are also often willing to assist aspiring students who show interest in careers in the arts.
MENTORS HIP Several IU Auditorium staff members and departments serve as mentors for students, both graduate and undergraduate. Last November, with the generous support of Jim and Joyce Grandorf, IU Auditorium hosted the inaugural Grandorf Leadership Summit. All student staff and volunteers were invited to attend this one-day conference aimed at cultivating leadership and professional skills in Auditorium students. Also this year, we aided Union Board with logistics and the financial components of their annual Welcome Week Block Party and for An Evening with Antoni Porowski in December.
L EAR N IN G L ABO RATO RY Although learning for the sake of learning has its intrinsic rewards, participation in real-world situations deepens students’ understanding and experience. IU Auditorium creates opportunities for students to experience the live event industry by training them in roles such as volunteer ushers, box office clerks, and guest services personnel. We also employ student interns in our administrative offices, providing them with real-world skills in marketing, development, event management, and educational outreach. These opportunities allow students to explore career paths and build their resume experience while establishing essential connections with potential employers.

ARTIST ENGAGEMENT
With every show that we bring to IU Auditorium and with the generosity of our donors, we strive to offer IU and Bloomington community members the opportunity to have meaningful interactions with the visiting artists and touring professionals. Events such as masterclasses and panel discussions provide students the invaluable chance to learn from professionals in their field. Postshow Q&As, meet and greets, and demonstrations allow community members and students alike to connect to the show on a deeper level and to gain insight into the life of a performer.

MAST E RC L ASS ES The Book of Mormon company managers led a discussion with IU Musical Theatre students, Edgewood Junior High Show Choir visited the Auditorium for a panel discussion by members of Straight No Chaser, and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company members conducted four different contemporary dance masterclasses, including one on choreography.
ORCHEST RA L RE P E RTO I R E C LASS ES During their visit to Bloomington, the Minnesota Orchestra led an evening full of instrumental masterclasses and mock auditions for Jacobs School of Music students from the strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion departments. Additionally, Juho Pohjonen taught a piano masterclass, and students in the orchestral conducting department had the opportunity to work with Minnesota Orchestra’s conductor Osmo Vänskä.
E DUCAT I O N A L TA LKS
These events consisted of panel discussions, lecturedemonstrations, workshops, and school visits. The season included an insightful lecture-demonstration by Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussain, a plethora of pre-show talks given by IU faculty members, and a panel discussion on non-profit management led by Minnesota Orchestra administrators. Additionally, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company members met with students enrolled in the “Memory, Trauma, and Healing in the African Diaspora” course to discuss how dance and movement can play a vital role in both remembering and healing.
CAST A N D C R EW IN TE RACT I O N S Cast and crew interactions include events like pre- and postshow Q&A talks, stage and wardrobe talkbacks, and side-byside orchestral rehearsals. Nearly every performance group or guest artist interacted with us in 2019–2020 through masterclasses, educational talks, and others activities.
IU PRIDE
While our beautiful historic facility on the Fine Arts Plaza and our welcoming staff are the face of IU to thousands of patrons, IU Auditorium is also highly respected and regarded for how it supports many other IU entities. We have a proud history of being of service to student organizations, and we also serve as a platform to help promote distinguished faculty and their contributions to society. Our staff members possess specialized skills in event presentation, and we regularly extend this expertise beyond our four walls. The flawless execution of largescale ceremonies, athletic events, and musical concerts—and your enjoyment of these—is our reward!
IU AUD ITORIU M STUDE N T SCH O LA RS H I P Through the generosity of our Circle of Friends, the IU Auditorium Student Scholarship honors the legacy of retired IU Auditorium and Indiana Memorial Union Executive Director Winston Shindell. In addition to offering opportunities for hands-on venue management, we provide academic scholarships to five qualified students each year. The IU Auditorium Student Scholarship honors the legacy of retired IU Auditorium and Indiana Memorial Union Executive Director Winston Shindell. A fierce advocate for students, Shindell created a professional environment that enabled students to gain practical knowledge by working directly with IU Auditorium staff. Congratulations to our 2019–2020 recipients, each a sterling example of the students IU Auditorium has had the honor of working with: MALLORY CARNES OLIVIA CARRIER RHEA CHHOKAR ARIELLE PARE RACHEL PARKS
IU AU D ITO RIU M +1 SCHO L A RS H I P Established in 2014, the IU Auditorium Alumni Association (IUAAA) celebrates a shared connection between Hoosiers of all ages that formed through participation with IU Auditorium as student managers, ushers, box office clerks, and more. The IUAAA works to pay forward all that they learned during their common experiences as students working at IU Auditorium through the formation of the +1 Scholarship. The +1 Scholarship was created in honor of IU Auditorium Executive Director, Doug Booher, and his +1 customer service philosophy. This year’s +1 scholarship was awarded at our 2020 Virtual Spring Banquet and was presented to Sheila Raghavendran who exemplified the extraordinary customer service efforts that keep the Auditorium in such high regard. ST RA IG H T N O C H AS E R B IC E N T E N N A L M E DA L P RES E N TAT IO N During their annual visit to IU Auditorium in December 2019, Indiana University surprised Straight No Chaser with Bicentennial Medals during their performance. The medals were presented to SNC by Karen Adams, Chief of Staff to IU President Michael A. McRobbie, and Fred Cate, Vice President for Research. Bicentennial Medals were awarded to organizations and individuals who, through their personal, professional, artistic, or philanthropic efforts, broadened the reach of Indiana University around the state, nation, and world. The medals themselves are unique, made from materials salvaged from the old bells which hung in the Student Building on the IU Bloomington campus, giving recipients a lasting piece of IU history.
INTERDEPARTMENTAL SUPPORT
Ever since we opened our doors we have strived to be of benefit to the university community. We are able to accomplish this every year by working closely alongside and providing critical support services for other IU entities. For example, we regularly collaborate with the Jacobs School of Music to plan residences that connect visiting artists with their students. We also work alongside departments such as the African American Arts Institute to present events, and we support the ticketing needs for the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance, as well as regional IU campuses. (Additionally, for the 2020–2021 academic year, our Event Services team has been running COVID-19 arrival and mitigation testing for all of IU Bloomington.)

COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT
While being located in the heart of campus, IU Auditorium strives to serve not only Indiana University students, faculty, and staff, but the whole of South Central Indiana. Since our founding in 1941, our mission has been to act as a gathering place for the entire community. We are proud that we have been able to represent IU to the thousands of community members who enter our doors each season. However, we don’t do it alone. It is only through building relationships, the generosity of IU Auditorium donors, and working closely with touring artists, local non-profit organizations, and other IU departments that we can properly give back to the community and make South Central Indiana a great place to call home.
E DUCATION A L P RO G RA M M I N G For nearly every season performance, we provide supplemental programming such as school visits, lecture demonstrations, and pre- and post-show talks. These popular programs provide access and enhance our audience members’ understanding and appreciation for the worldclass entertainment presented by IU Auditorium.
GI V E T HE MAG I C A program which began in 2013, Give the Magic continues to improve accessibility for underserved members of our community to the Auditorium and its programming. This season, we shared a record 351 tickets with community members from eight local social service agencies to enjoy STOMP in November.
IU AUD ITORIU M G I V ES IU Auditorium was again a presenting partner with the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival to help bring global music artists to Bloomington. We also partnered with community organizations to collect donations for Teacher’s Wearhouse during our presentation of Dennis James Hosts Halloween.
AUDI TO RIUM K I DS O N CA M PUS A momentous highlight from the 2019–2020 season was when we hosted nearly 2,000 seventh and eighth grade students from Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) for a daytime performance by Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company on February 21, 2020. All three MCCSC middle schools—Batchelor, Jackson Creek, and Tri-North—and a group of students from Eastern Greene High School attended this special performance inside our theatre. This school performance marked the second major event for our Auditorium Kids on Campus initiative. This program aims to provide annual K–12 programming for local students to experience the arts and to interact with world-renowned artists to enhance their academic and personal development. We are excited to continue to grow this event in the coming years with the support of Smithville Foundation, Southern Indiana Physicians Riley Physicians Pediatrics, Arts Midwest Touring Fund, IU Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council, and IU Auditorium Circle of Friends.

CAMPUS ENRICHMENT ESKENA Z I PART NE RS H I P This past season, one of our neighbors, the Eskenazi Museum of Art, reopened and we collaborated with them to offer patrons the opportunity to enjoy unique experiences at the museum followed by a show at the Auditorium. For Les Misérables, patrons were offered live music, a French Impressionism tour, a wellness experience about symbols of strength, and, of course, some French cuisine.
OUTDO OR EV E NTS IU Auditorium was proud to launch Open Air Venues for the 2020–2021 school year. These outdoor spaces have allowed us to provide opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to enjoy live performances and even present their own events in safe and socially distant outdoor environments. During the fall semester, we hosted more than 300 events of all types and sizes for more than 12,000 student, staff, and faculty attendees.
GROU P SA L ES Prior to the 2019–2020 season being cut short, we welcomed 25 groups through our doors as part of our group sales efforts and we were on pace to outperform our total amount of groups from the previous year (28). Despite the shortened season, we did generate nearly $11,000 more in revenue from group sales in 2019– 2020 and if the pace continued with two major Broadway titles remaining on the schedule, we would have had our best group sales total in Auditorium history.

“This was so cool! I loved getting to hear from the artists before they performed and hearing their unique opinions about their instruments and their music making styles.” – INDIANA UNIVERSITY STUDENT AFTER ATTENDING THE FLECK, MEYER, HUSSAIN LECTURE DEMONSTRATION
“I really enjoy it when the dance majors have opportunities to work with outside dancers and teachers. They can bring an insight to the profession that our regular professors do not have, and it can give great networking opportunities as well, which are essential to a future career.” – INDIANA UNIVERSITY CONTEMPORARY DANCE STUDENT AFTER AFTER ATTENDING A MASTERCLASS WITH BILL T. JONES/ARNIE ZANE COMPANY
VENUE MANAGEMENT
Beyond IU Auditorium, we oversee and staff other venues on campus, including Presidents Hall, Conrad Prebys Amphitheater, and Woodburn Hall. These additional campus venues hosted over 12,000 guests in 2019–2020 for lectures, weddings, receptions, university ceremonies, and more.
P RESID E N TS H A LL
CO N RA D P REBYS WOODBU RN A M P I T H E AT ER HALL
Presidents Hall is located inside historic Franklin Hall. We welcomed over 8,000 guests at events inside Presidents Hall last year. Events were highlighted by several notable speakers including Ruth Carter, Bill Whitaker, and Dolores Huerta. Presidents Hall also hosted in partnership with The Media School a taping of We Need to Talk, a CBS Sports talk show featuring 12 rotating female hosts. It also hosted a special IU Bicentennial Luncheon that featured the unveiling of “Lux et Veritas,” a painting commissioned for IU’s 200th anniversary by professor Bonnie Sklarski.
Conrad Prebys Amphitheater is nestled between Bryan House and the Jordan River, just steps away from the front door of IU Auditorium. The amphitheater featured numerous Jacobs School of Music jazz concerts and hosted another beautiful wedding ceremony. (Currently, the Amphitheater is being used as one of the primary sites for Open Air Venues on campus, and it has hosted events ranging from movie nights to chamber orchestra concerts to IU football watch parties.)
This space hosted a handful of events in 2019–2020 including a lecture from Alice M. Greenwald and a CultureFest screening.

DIGITAL CONTENT
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be some time before we can welcome all of our patrons through our doors again. Despite this, we remain steadfastly committed to fulfilling our mission of creating engaging world-class arts and event experiences. Although we are unable to offer our typical programming in the 2020–2021 season, we have been able to do this by shifting our focus towards both virtual and outdoor events. Shortly after we had to close our doors in March, we began providing real-time, engaging content to our website and social media channels, and curated weekly emails to our patrons with ways to stay in touch with the arts both locally and around the globe. Some of the created content including the IU Auditorium Vault (weekly content looking back on past performers and events on our stage), Musical Madness (a 32-event bracket voted on by patrons to determine the best event ever to take place at IU Auditorium), and Livestream Q&A events (see more below).
V I RT UAL EV EN TS Not long after we had to shut our doors, we began hosting Livestream Q&A events with notable IU alumni that work in the performing arts. These events have allowed us to continue creating opportunities for our community to engage with the arts. Our first Livestream Q&A guest, Brian Eads, was the musical director for the U.S. tour of Les MisĂŠrables, which had been on our stage just two months prior. Although Brian had been able to work with IU orchestral conducting students while in Bloomington, the virtual event allowed him, and us, to engage with a much larger and more diverse audience. Through the eight Q&As we have hosted so far, we have provided tens of thousands with the opportunity to talk with and learn from Broadway actresses, award-winning producers, musicians, and more. Virtual events and opportunities will continue to grow in size and scope as we move towards 2021.

THANK YOU DONORS!
We are so deeply thankful for your dedication to the performing arts. This season featured quality performances that allowed us to touch the lives of so many. Your support has had an immeasurable impact in the lives of our students and community. Without your help we could not have, among other things, acquired our new Steinway piano or offered so many different educational opportunities. Thank you for making the 2019–2020 IU Auditorium season a success.
MEAN IN G F U L I M PACT Because of the generosity of more than 623 IU Auditorium individual and corporate supporters, Give the Magic shared 351 tickets to see STOMP with eight local social service organizations, and 5,520 students and community members were inspired by 61 educational programs led by world-renowned artists and community experts. Thank you for your growing support of IU Auditorium and these initiatives!
GOALS RE ACH E D To our donors and corporate partners, we thank you for your critical role in achieving IU Auditorium’s vision for the 2019–2020 season. Although our season was cut short, your support exceeded our expectations. Your gifts connected K–12 and university students to the performing arts, provided student scholarships and professional development opportunities, and inspired community members through our performances. Thank you for making it all possible!
OU R N EW STEIN WAY In the winter of the 2019–2020, IU Auditorium welcomed a brand-new Steinway D Concert Grand Piano to Bloomington! The purchase of this beautiful new piano was a critical financial investment for the Auditorium, replacing the old piano purchased in 1968. The arrival of the new piano marked a culmination of more than two years of planning and work by our Auditorium Board of Advisors, staff, and numerous friends and colleagues. Our new Steinway will continue IU Auditorium’s mission to create engaging world-class arts and event experiences at IU by attracting artists and performances of the highest caliber. In addition, our new Steinway will help to provide academic enrichment opportunities for collaboration among Indiana University students, local community members, and K–12 students, creating an environment in which these experiences can grow. Thank you to our numerous friends who have allowed us to bring this remarkable instrument to our stage. A special thanks goes out to all the donors, as well as the IU Auditorium Board of Advisors, and Linda Hunt and Tim Morrison, for their leadership and participation throughout the entire campaign.
