For this new season, we have carefully selected shows, including Broadway, music, dance, and comedy, which resonate with the refined and eclectic tastes of the diverse audiences in our region. Debuting at the Auditorium are Rock of Ages and American Idiot, two new musicals featuring smash hits from famous bands. Dreamgirls, the award-winning musical featuring powerful ballads, also makes its debut appearance. Timeless classics, including Peter Pan and the musical adaptation of the famous children’s story Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas, appeal to both kids and adults alike. We also have some favorites returning to the Auditorium. the groundbreaking BROADWAY m Rocking to a rebellious beat America’s rebellious alternative rock band Green Day brings to life its revolutionary album American Idiot in an award-winning musical that challenges shallow, media-saturated culture and inspires youth to explore life outside of stifling suburbia. Direct from Broadway, the smash-hit musical AMERICAN IDIOT tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of their hometowns. Johnny battles the tensions of loneliness and love when he moves to the big city, Will deals with a rollercoaster of emotions as a result of his girlfriend’s pregnancy, and Tunny faces the bodily horrors of a faraway war when he enlists in the army. Their quest for true meaning in a post September 11 world leads them on an exhilarating theatrical journey. American Idiot reflects Green Day’s musical roots that exploded with the band’s smash-hit album Dookie in 1994. Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning. But it was their landmark 2004 album American Idiot that launched Green Day’s immense popularity. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, earned seven Grammy nominations (winning two), produced two hit singles, and won the band an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Rock Music Artist. In June of 2008, fueled by a passion for the narrative embedded in the album, Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer and Green Day began a collaboration to bring American Idiot to the stage. Berkeley Repertory Theater in San Francisco and subsequent Broadway production at the St. James Theatre in New York City, the musical has won two Tony Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. The musical features the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday,” and the title track from the 2004 American Idiot album. The score also includes several songs from Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning 2009 release 21st Century Breakdown, including “21 Guns” and an unreleased love song, “When It’s Time.” Finally, the beloved hit single, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” befittingly ends the musical. Brilliantly pieced together, the songs unfold the fluid narrative that challenges obstacles facing the 21st century youth and offers hope that there is no one right way to be an American. The New York Times wrote, “Invigorating, moving and thrilling! Performed with galvanizing intensity by a terrific cast, the emotional charge is as memorable as the music. A true rock opera.”

The killer Broadway musical Prepare to be “razzle-dazzled” in October as the Tony Award-winning musical CHICAGO returns to the Auditorium stage. Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, this tale of murderous greed and showbiz satirizes corruption in the justice system and the celebrity status given to notorious criminals. Vaudeville starlet Velma Kelly and spotlight-thirsty Roxanne “Roxie” Hart find themselves in Cook County Jail after they kill their respective lovers. Their burlesque performances, however, do not end under lock and key; in fact, they have only begun as the two tenacious murderesses go head to head to win over Billy Flynn, a lawyer with a perfect track record who makes celebrities of his clients to sway public opinion and win sympathy. The vivacious characters are in for the trials of their lives as they struggle to gain fame and escape death row. The original Broadway version of Chicago was based on Maurine Dallas Watkins’ 1926 play about criminals, and it debuted as a musical in 1975, running for nearly 1,000 performances. Under the direction of John Kander, Fred Ebb, Bob Fosse, and Walter Bobbie, Chicago was revived in 1996 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City for a sizzling and sensuous production that has become Broadway’s longest-running musical revival. In 2002, the musical was made into an Academy Award-winning film starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Queen Latifha, and Richard Gere. The hit movie captured the themes of celebrity, scandal, corruption, and revenge that appear relentlessly throughout the musical.

Good versus evil has never sounded this good! In 1969, he provided comic relief for a tense IU campus as a result of the Vietnam War by playing the organ for The Phantom of the Opera. instruments for many ensembles in addition to specializing in audio technology at Stanford University and UC Berkeley. From Singapore to Vienna to Salzburg, the compelling organ and the eerie electronic music have fascinated audiences around the world. A critic raved, “I wasn’t sure how I was going to like the electronics, but the score was a mélange of Gounod’s melodies, Bach’s Passacaglia in C minor, and wonderfully eerie SciFi effects. I loved it!” After the silent film The Artist won five Academy Awards—including Best Picture—this past year, Faust is another critically acclaimed production in the genre of silent film that you won’t want to miss! Unprecedented standup comedy Spend an engaging evening with BILL MAHER, one of America’s most provocative comedians and the award-winning satirical host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. As an American stand-up comedian, television host, political commentator, author, and actor, Maher constantly challenges organized institutions and their individuals. His witty rhetoric is aimed at a wide range of topics such as religion, politics, bureaucracies, political correctness, mass media, and the American voter. For the last 18 years, Maher has pushed the boundaries of where funny, political talk can go on American television through late-night talk shows. Maher started hosting Comedy Central’s—and later ABC’s—Politically Incorrect in 1993, which won him numerous awards, including an Emmy Award. Maher graduated from Cornell University and began his career as a stand-up comedian and actor, which landed him appearances on the Johnny Carson and David Letterman shows in the early 1980s. He also acted in several films, including his debut performance in D.C. Cab and his role in the hilarious Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. The quizzical comedian has written five bestsellers as well, including When You Ride Alone, You Ride With Bin Laden and New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer. When a person who has been ranked on Comedy Central’s 100 Greatest Standups of All Time, and has on his panel politicians and celebrities from all across the political spectrum, you know you’re in for an entertaining and thought-provoking evening. The Rolling Stones praises, “Watching Maher on Real Time taking apart conventional wisdom is a thrilling affair. Plus, he’s very funny.” And he’s even more impressive in person!

Fresh and innovative talent Sixteen years ago, a handful of talented IU students came together to form the a cappella sensation STRAIGHT NO CHASER. From songs by the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to the King of Pop Michael Jackson, the talented group performs fresh, unadulterated versions of both popular and lesser-known songs. Since its formation in 1996, Straight No Chaser has produced five albums, including two highly successful holiday albums: Holiday Spirits and Christmas Cheers. In 2008, along with millions of other YouTube viewers, Atlantic Records Chairman and CEO Craig Kallman took notice of the talented a capella group, and Straight No Chaser subsequently signed a five-album record deal with Atlantic. With A Twist marked Straight No Chaser’s first full-length departure from holiday music, and garnered the group’s highest debut on the Billboard 200 to date, at #29. Choosing the members carefully for personality as well as vocal talent, Straight No Chaser sets itself apart from other a cappella groups with its contemporary repertoire and dynamic approach, quickly headlining concerts both in Bloomington and on the road. In the past year, Straight No Chaser performed in Atlantic City, as well as at the New York Opera House and many renowned venues across the U.S. They also performed a ten-concert tour in the United Kingdom.
The harmonious voices belong to Randy Stine, Charlie Mechling, Jerome Collins, David Roberts, and Walter Chase from the original lineup and Michael Luginbill, Don Nottingham, Ryan Ahlwardt, Seggie Isho, and Tyler Trepp, who joined post-graduation. “To think that the ten of us could go our separate ways after college, start professional lives, and then commit to putting Straight No Chaser back together after all these years is nothing short of a minor miracle,” said original member Charlie Mechling. Cheer to all the Whos far and near! After books, songs, and movies, one of the most beloved villain-turned-hero stories comes to life in what The New York Times called “An extraordinary performance! 100 times better than any bedside story!”
The musical, with book and lyrics by Timothy Mason, original score by Mel Marvin, and choreography by John DeLuca, debuted on Broadway in 2006, and was Broadway’s first musical to offer 12 performances a week.
In DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL, the Grinch—with a heart “two sizes too small”—seethes and plots in his lair while the ever cheery Whos scurry around Whoville buying boxes and bags, ribbons and bows, and toys and tools for their most celebrated day of the year: Christmas! But when the hairy green Grinch determines to steal Whoville’s packages and presents, will Christmas be ruined for the Whos?
The Grinch will again capture the hearts of fans with the green grouch’s devilishly clever tricks, zany jealousy, and unsuspecting transformation. Children love seeing their favorite sly monster and exaggeratedly upbeat villagers perform live in dazzling costumes while adults enjoy reliving a classic and comedic childhood story in a colorful new way.
The Grinch’s faithful furry friend, Max, narrates the tale as the Whos’ upbeat and spirit-filled songs “Who Likes Christmas?” and “Welcome, Christmas” drive the Grinch to bitterly sing “I Hate Christmas Eve.” And of course, the musical also features the wily number “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” Based on Dr. Seuss’ popular children’s book How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the tale has materialized through two films: the animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) and the Academy Award-winning feature film How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch and Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who.

Don’t stop believin’ ROCK OF AGES, nominated for five Tony Awards, is director Kristin Hanggi’s Broadway debut musical that features reprised songs from famous 1980s glam metal bands to frame the musical’s rock n’ roll culture—and all of the troubles that come with it… Rock of Ages takes you back to the times when big bands with big egos play big guitar solos and sport even bigger hair. The musical score, under the supervision of Ethan Popp and David Gibbs, compiles 30 of the era’s best songs, including Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing,” Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” and Europe’s “The Final Countdown.” Set in LA’s infamous Sunset Strip in 1987, Rock of Ages tells the story of Drew, a boy from South Detroit, and small-town girl, Sherrie, both in Los Angeles to chase their dreams of one day rocking the stage like their idol, and music legend, Stacee Jaxx. Their dreams of performing in the big leagues are challenged by Hertz and Franz, who want to demolish the scandalous culture of the alcohol-drinking and drug-using rockers. Drew and Sherrie fight against the enemy’s proposition, but they eventually begin to question whether fame and fortune actually lead to happiness. The musical, written by Chris D’Arienzo, debuted in Los Angeles in the summer of 2005 and opened in the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York City in April 2009. A 2012 movie adaptation stars Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Alec Baldwin rocking theaters across the country, power chords and all.

“Everyone had this music in the background somewhere, at their high school dance or as a soundtrack to their first kiss, and you kind of forget that until you hear it, and then you go, ‘Oh my goodness, I remember that moment of my life,’” Hanggi says. “You don’t even realize how much you know these songs.” The production is a like a music video brought to life, complete with electrifying dancers and blazing guitar licks. The energetic young cast knows how to make audience members feel part of the musical, and whether or not you admit to loving 80s hair-metal, there is a very good chance you’ll catch yourself singing along! Bloomington’s favorite holiday party Lights shimmer and gleam a festive glow in the Grand Foyer. Warm gingerbread cookies wait at concession stands for the chance to treat some taste buds. The orchestra pit showcases wreaths, garland, bows, and suit-clad musicians. These special holiday features can only mean one thing: it’s that time of year for CHIMES OF CHRISTMAS to set the holiday stage. Every year the talented young men and women from IU’s Jacobs School of Music usher in the winter season with nostalgic and playful holiday tunes. From catchy pop songs to beloved classical pieces, the performance showcases immense musical talent. Audience members can enjoy energetic songs such as “Jingle Bells,” beautiful classics including “Borogoditse Devo (Ave María),” and international rhythms like “Betelehemu” (a Nigerian Christmas song) that celebrate holiday traditions from around the world. Chimes of Christmas has provided a beloved holiday tradition in Bloomington since the 1950s. Each year, the IU Wind Ensemble accompanies the Grammy Award-nominated Singing Hoosiers and the evening of music begins before audiences even find their seats with the Trombone Choir welcoming patrons into the festively decorated Grand Foyer.

Harmonious sounds of brilliance The vibrato of the violins, the crescendo of the cellos, the arpeggio of the harps, and the subtly distinguished volumes and tempos of the other finely tuned instruments unify as one harmonious sound at a classical concert performed by the world-class musicians of THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA with special guest JOSHUA BELL. This season’s performance will feature a riveting solo from prodigious violinist Joshua Bell, “classical music superstar” and recipient of the 2011 Paul Newman Award for Services to the Arts and Children. The Bloomington native is no stranger to IU Auditorium, as he has performed on its stage in recent years and also received his degree from the IU Jacobs School of Music. Under the leadership of music director Franz Welser-Möst, The Cleveland Orchestra has become one of the highest-ranked orchestras in the world since its formation in 1918. In addition to playing at Cleveland’s Severance Hall in the winters and at Blossom Festival during the summers, the ensemble has performed in many countries, including Japan and Korea, and has established several residencies in the United States as well as in Europe. The ensemble recently established residency with Indiana University, where the renowned musicians perform and interact with students at IU’s Jacobs School of Music, and during its stay in Bloomington, the professional musicians will conduct several programs that focus on the ambitious students.

In addition to its stellar musical programs with college students, the orchestra’s educational programs, a cornerstone of the orchestra’s original mission, have introduced more than four million Cleveland-area school children to symphonic music since 1921. During the ensemble’s previous visit to Bloomington, first chair violinist, Jeanne Pruecil Rose, visited young musicians from Fairview Elementary School and taught them not only how to play, but also offered them first-hand knowledge about what life is like as a member of a such a distinguished orchestra. “I wanted to thank you for scheduling one of the most magnificent performances that I have seen at the Auditorium,” wrote one audience member after the orchestra’s last appearance at the Auditorium. “To have one of the world’s best symphonies here in Bloomington is truly a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the ultimate in music. Taylor 2 Aesthetic beauty at its finest Breathtaking movement and exquisite precision make for a visually pleasing dance concert. However, the personal stories and risky themes that underlie the beautiful aesthetics of first-class dancers make for an exceptional performance that won’t soon be forgotten. Paul Taylor’s inspiring dance troupe of six members, TAYLOR 2, carries on the excellent modern dance technique that Taylor has been creating and refining for the past six decades. As a recipient of nearly every important honor given to artists in the United States, Paul Taylor is one of the most sought-after choreographers in the world. His innovative, cutting-edge works have been licensed for performance by companies from more than 75 countries. Escape to Neverland! Flying in from the faraway world of Neverland is the beloved boy who refuses to grow up. The classic children’s story PETER PAN will be brought to life on the Auditorium stage in February as Peter and his friends face the challenges of growing up and, of course, defeating the infamous Captain Hook. The musical opens to the Darling household set in London, where Wendy, John, and Michael play make-believe for their caring but strict parents. One night, Nana, the best nurse with four paws, spots a strange boy in the window. He reveals himself as Peter Pan, and with the help of his magical companion, Tinkerbell, he teaches the children how to fly. They embark on the journey of their lives to Neverland, where they meet the musical’s unforgettable characters: the mischievous Lost Boys, Tigerlily and her clan of clever Indians, and Captain Hook and his band of misfit pirates. But will the children stay in Neverland, living adventurous lives without rules, or will they decide to return to London and face adulthood in their parents’ home? Based on James M. The jamming and spamming return... Back by popular demand, the quest for the Holy Grail returns to the IU Auditorium stage in MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT, the hit Broadway musical that lovingly spoofs the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail—and also lampoons celebrated historical figures, world famous events, and overly serious Broadway musicals! This King Arthur tale includes the Knights of the Round Table and plenty of men in tights, but with some notable additions to the classic cult film. First, it doesn’t come in a metal canister—it’s live and full of astonishing comedic drive and energy! Second, it’s packed with up-to-the minute pop culture references, Los Angeles Lakers cheerleaders, and a Killer Rabbit. The musical’s book and lyrics were written by Eric Idle, a member of the original Monty Python team, who co-wrote the music with John Du Prez. One of the musical‘s most memorable songs parodies that token romantic love song found in almost every classic Broadway production: “Once in every show—There comes a song like this—It starts off soft and low—And ends up with a kiss.” In one iconic scene, the clip-clop of horse hooves is heard just before King Arthur and his servant, Patsy, come into view. Transcending cultural boundaries through music Let your imagination soar as world-renowned cellist YO-YO MA performs with THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE in an orchestra concert that takes audience members on a metaphorical journey down the “Silk Road” of cross-cultural music. The Silk Road, a series of trade routes that crisscrossed Eurasia for nearly 2,000 years, inspired musical genius Yo-Yo Ma to form The Silk Road Ensemble in 2000 to promote sharing and learning across cultures, art forms, and disciplines. The ensemble is a collective of musicians and other performing artists from nearly 20 countries around the world. In sharing traditions from various cultures, the ensemble develops and performs new music and multimedia pieces, exploring and expanding contemporary musical crossroads. The artists not only come from different countries, but they also play instruments unique to their nations, making The Silk Road Ensemble a one-of-a-kind orchestra. In addition to traditional classical instruments, the ensemble features distinctive instruments not often found in North American orchestras including the kamancheh, a Persian bowed string instrument; the duduk, an Armenian woodwind instrument; and the shakuhachi, a Japanese end-blown flute. Director Yo-Yo Ma was born to Chinese parents in Paris, where he learned to play the cello at the age of four. His family moved to New York, and Ma went on to study music at the Julliard School and graduated from Harvard University in 1976. His discography is comprised of more than 75 albums, which includes more than 15 Grammy Award winners.

The Silk Road Ensemble is one of the programs in Ma’s Silk Road Project, an artistic and educational nonprofit founded in 1998. The organization engages in cross-cultural exchanges and residencies, leads workshops for students, and partners with prominent cultural institutions to create educational programs and materials. As one of The Silk Road Project’s main features, The Silk Road Ensemble has recorded five albums and performed to critical acclaim throughout Asia, Europe, and North America. The ensemble’s most recent recording, Off the Map, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album in 2011. “We all feel we’re better musicians as a result of the Silk Road Project,” Yo-Yo Ma explains. “We were taken to musical areas we didn’t know well, and have widened our own musical worlds. We have more tools with which to express ourselves. Motown’s beautiful talents dream big The sensational new stage production of DREAMGIRLS showcases powerful vocals, dynamic characters, and a spectacular musical score. Full of onstage joy and backstage drama, Dreamgirls tells the story of an up-andcoming 1960s singing girl group and the triumphs and tribulations that come with fame and fortune. The musical follows the Dreamettes, a trio composed of full-figured lead singer Effie White and best friends Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson, on their topsy-turvy journeys to stardom. Relationships are challenged when the Dreamettes meet the influential Curtis Taylor, Jr. at an amateur talent competition in New York City. Curtis replaces temperamental Effie with slender Deena as lead singer, and then altogether ousts Effie by hiring Michelle Morris, renaming the trio The Dreams. Each character is presented with emotional challenges, and only time will tell if justice wins and the discouraged female performers regain independence and confidence.

How do I get the IU Bloomington student discount?
Yes. There are two ways in which you can place this type of order. You can simply order all tickets on a single order form with one method of payment. Alternatively, if you are a Gold Subscriber (see page 31 for subscriber benefits) you may submit up to four order forms together with separate methods of payment. EACH order is charged an additional $10 service fee. All orders to be combined must be submitted to the box office at the same time, either in person or mailed together in the same envelope. Orders are filled according to the newest subscriber’s priority number.
Each IU Bloomington student with a current, valid CampusAccess student ID may redeem a maximum of one student-priced ticket per event for personal use at the listed IUB student price. You must show your valid student ID at the performance to use a student-price ticket. Yes. The minimum order for IU payroll deduction is $100. The deadline for payroll deduction is August 24, 2012.
What is the $2.50 Facility Fee that is included in each ticket price?
IU Auditorium collects $2.50 from each ticket sale for any event held at IU Auditorium and places it into a special account. Funds in this account are used for facility capital purchases and improvements. The funds are also used to pay for repairs and maintenance. This means of financial support helps ensure IU Auditorium will continue to be a source of community pride for many years to come.

Free Park and Ride Avoid traffic congestion and the quest to find a parking spot on show nights. We offer FREE PARK AND RIDE, courtesy of IU Campus Bus, on performance nights from the Atwater and Poplars Garages to IU Auditorium and back after the show. Bus stops are marked with an “X� on the map. Please assemble at these pick-up points, which are also marked by signage. Auditorium staff will be present to assist you. The buses run one hour prior to the curtain time and provide frequent pickups. No departures are available until after the curtain goes down at the end of the event. Atwater Garage is at the corner of Atwater and Faculty Avenues; Poplars Garage is located on Sixth and Dunn Streets.
Self parking available at two nearby locations
While parking at IU Auditorium is limited, you may park at Jordan Avenue Garage, located just east of IU Auditorium on Jordan Avenue between Third and Seventh Streets. American Idiot – September 4 & 5 Jam to the rebellious music of Green Day, a band of world-famous rockers, in a new Tony Award-winning musical that challenges a media-saturated America and explores life outside of complacent suburbia.
Chicago – October 16 & 17 Two strong-willed women straight from Vaudeville take stardom to a scandalous new level in one of Broadway’s most sizzling musicals when they murder their lovers and fight for the spotlight—in jail—in order to win fame and escape death row.
Dennis James Hosts Halloween – October 26 Master organist and IU Alumnus Dennis James celebrates Halloween by accompanying one of the silent film genre’s most spooky and captivating productions: F.W. Murnau’s Faust. But, in a never-before-seen performance at IU, Mark Goldstein supplements James’ talent on the Auditorium organ and the duo utilizes unique instruments to enhance the film’s eeriness.
Bill Maher – October 28 As one of America’s most provocative comedians and the host of late-night talk show Real Time with Bill Maher, this standup routine will have you laughing throughout the entire evening as he wittily jabs at media icons and cultural institutions.
The Cleveland Orchestra with Joshua Bell – January 23 Sparks will fly as the United States’ best classical musicians unite on stage to perform perfectly harmonious renditions of world-famous masterpieces. The musicians are no strangers to Bloomington as they recently established residency with Indiana University.
Taylor 2 – February 1 Witness the ingenuity of Paul Taylor, one of the most sought-after choreographers in the world, as his modern dance troupe performs aesthetically beautiful movements, underscored by relevant themes and unique music choice.

Rock of Ages – December 1 Eighties hair metal meets Broadway in a spectacularly heartfelt musical where two young Midwesterners move to LA to pursue dreams of acting and singing, as they fight against greed, scandal, and society’s disapproval of the rock n’ roll culture.
Chimes of Christmas – December 5 As one of Bloomington’s most anticipated annual holiday traditions, this is a must-attend party filled with beautiful Christmas tunes performed by IU Jacobs School of Music’s talented Singing Hoosiers, Wind Ensemble, and Trombone Choir.
