A great response
W
ow! What a response to our change to A4. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch to say how much they like the new bigger format. We are very happy with our big change, and it is nice to know that readers are pleased with it, too. We like the new paper as well – it isn’t so glossy that light reflecting off it means you cannot read the print and it feels quite nice in the hand. We are not the only ones delighted with the response to our October issue. Local artist Annie Meakin, who has painted four stunning scenes of Victorian Ivybridge at Christmas to go on Christmas cards which will be sold to raise money for a local charity, has been overwhelmed by the response to our article. Several local businesses are going to use Annie’s cards as their corporate Christmas cards this year and Ivybridge’s Mayor, Cllr Karen Pringle, is going to send them as her official card as well. The cards go on general sale on 1 November – see page five. One of our advertisers also had a fantastic response to their advert in the October issue. Ivybridge Caring advertised for volunteers and had seven enquiries within four days of the magazine being delivered!
Advertising costs money, of course, so we will continue to work hard to make sure every issue of The Ivybridge magazine is a mustread for the residents of the town, so that they see local businesses alongside our great community content. If you are a business which advertises elsewhere, do those publications make the same commitment?
Monthly musings from the editor
“
While people are reading the local news, or what’s been happening at their children’s school, make sure your business is seen by them, too.
I am delighted that the magazine is again supporting the Royal British Legion Remembrance Day Parade and Service by printing the order of service (page 9). Previously it was a centre pull-out, but this year I’ve done something a little different and, if I have got my cuts and folds in the right places, you should have a handy pamphlet which you can take along on the day to follow the service. There is also the latest news from the town’s RBL branch and an update on the projects planned to commemorate next year’s 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War (WWI). We also have the usual community news, school reports, club and group reports, regular columns, sport and comprehensive What’s On – everything you’ve come to expect from Ivybridge’s biggest and best magazine.
”
Call Jean on 07870 727747 or email jean@theivybridgemagazine.co.uk
It’s great to hear about these successes and we think they demonstrate that our unique mix of compelling community content, which is different in every issue, with local advertising alongside, can help local businesses get a better response to their adverts.

STUDENTS SHOW BRITAIN THEY’VE GOT TALENT FACEBOOK YOUTH FESTIVAL OF HOPE Students from Ivybridge Community College wowed the judges at auditions for next year’s series of hit TV talent show Britain’s Got Talent – and now have an anxious wait to find out if they’ve made it through to the televised shows. Seventy-six performers travelled to Cardiff on 20 October to try out for the show. Their routine sees acrobatic gymnasts, dancers and singers come together to perform a spectacular fiveminute showpiece to the Queen song Don’t Stop Me Now. The 76 performers fill the stage, keeping the audience fascinated with dynamic somersaults taking place at area side of the stage, while balances, tumbling, choreography and singing take place in others. The group got the chance to try out for the show after their dazzling performance at the opening of the UK

School Games – it was so good that they were put straight through to perform in front of the show’s producers. With such a huge cast, the performance is expected to be the show’s biggest ever showcase of talent. And the students are hoping that show creator and judge Simon Cowell keeps to his word after he said he wants this year’s show to be “even bigger and better than before” – after all, there has never before been anything bigger on the show.
TOM STANDS UP TO CANCER
‘CUT BUSINESS RATES’ PLEA
NEW RULES FOR DOG OWNERS
An Ivybridge man has stood up to cancer literally. Tom Ingham stayed on his feet for 24 hours from 3am on Friday, 18 October, until 3am Saturday to raise money for Cancer Research UK. He took up the SU2C challenge in memory of his dad, who died from bowel cancer nine years ago, in the hope that a cure can be found so that others do not have to suffer like he did, and like Tom’s family had to in the
Ivybridge Town Council fears that some town traders could go out of business unless business rates are reduced. Councillors were told that many shops in the town centre were struggling to survive and that unless action was taken they could be lost. It was reported that shops in Glanvilles Mill are hardest hit, with many tenants in the scheme paying more in business rates than they do in rent. Local MP Gary Streeter said he was sympathetic to the traders’ situation and would continue to bring the issue to the Chancellor’s attention.
It is now an offence not to clear up after your dog on all open air, public land in Ivybridge. New rules to crackdown on dog fouling, clarify where dogs should be on leads and where they are banned are now in force. The Dog Control Orders also mean dogs are banned from fenced, hedged, or walled child’s play areas. Dogs should also be on leads in all car parks, near shops, in cemeteries, churchyards, fenced pond areas and nature reserves. Dog owners who flout the rules can be issued with an £80 on-the-spot fine with the possibility of a court summons.
wake of his passing. Tom ‘enjoyed’ several interesting situations during the challenge, such as meal times, bed time stories for his children, and a film and takeaway night with friends. One of the biggest contributions came from the Ink Inn Tattoo Studio, who tattooed a meaningful design on Tom’s wrist while he stood up, and donated the full cost of the session to the charity. Tom would like to thank his family and friends for their support and helping him Stand Up To Cancer, as well as to everyone who donated money.
Artist ‘overwhelmed’ by response to paintings The local artist who has painted Victorian Christmas scenes of famous Ivybridge landmarks to go on Christmas cards to raise money for a local charity has been “overwhelmed” by the response to the article in last month’s magazine. Annie Meakin’s paintings will be seen across the world after they were chosen by a number of local companies to be their corporate Christmas cards this year, including, poignantly, the Mill scene above by Arjo Wiggins. The mayor will also be sending Annie’s cards as her official Christmas card. A5 cards of the paintings, which will be on sale for around £2 from 1 November, will be available in Lime Gallery, Ivybridge Fish Company and at The Watermark. Giclee canvases are also available for around £95 each and full-size framed silk prints around £175. Annie has also had a request to have some puzzles made of the paintings.

FOR SYRIANS
A festival to raise money for WARchild to help children in war-torn Syria is being held in Totnes. Amala Fest - or ‘Festival of Hope’ - will include music, dance, live bands and displays by local schools. There will also be workshops for children to make gifts for the children in refugee camps in Turkey and Lebanon. War photographer Paul Conroy, who is from Totnes and was injured in the bomb attack which killed Times correspondent Marie Calvin, will speak at the festival. î Amala Fest, Saturday, 16 November - 10am to midnight. facebook.com/amalafest
IVYBRIDGE ON THE MAP WITH LAUNCH OF DARTMOOR CYCLE WAY A new 95-mile cycle route around Dartmoor which puts Ivybridge on the cycling map has officially opened. The Dartmoor Way circular cycling route around Dartmoor National Park was launched by TV presenter, journalist, author and cyclist Robert Penn, who cut the ribbon to officially declare The Dartmoor Way open. The Dartmoor Way links hamlets, villages and towns in and around Dartmoor and has been newly-signed with brightly-coloured waymarkers (above). The route is expected to attract cycling enthusiasts of all abilities from across the region, as well as tourists and holidaymakers. Mainly on quiet roads or hard ground, no off-road or specialist equipment is required. As well as the main circular route, there is a 27-mile long High Moorland Link trail, which cuts across Dartmoor via Princetown, creating two shorter circular routes or adding an extra challenge for those who wish to cycle the entire trail in a figure of eight. î www.dartmoorway.co.uk
HEAD START FOR FUTURE LEADERS Ivybridge Rotarians gave a local young person the chance to go on a training program for the leaders of the future this summer. Peter Mogridge attended this year’s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, a week-long camp giving young people the chance to improve leadership and communication skills, learn about businesses and institutions, explore career paths, and share ideas and experiences. Whether at secondary school or university, RYLA provides a unique opportunity – contact Adrian D’Cunha on adrian. dcunha@merck.com for further details.
THREAT TO OUTDOOR PLAYGROUP A woodland playgroup is facing closure unless it can find a new site. Bluebells Outdoor Playgroup is losing the use of the woodland where it currently meets and is desperately searching for a new place to call home so that local children can continue to enjoy outdoor fun. Any new location would need to be reasonably close to Ivybridge and offer a degree of security for the equipment the group use for activities. The group is fully insured. î If you can help, contact bluebellsplaygroup@ hotmail.co.uk

A campaign to put Ivybridge on the national walking map has been launched. An application to the Walkers Are Welcome initiative is underway, but organisers need your help to make sure Ivybridge is successful. The town must demonstrate community support, so a petition has been launched to collect 600 signatures. Organisers have put paper copies of the petition in Trail Outdoor, The Watermark, Bridge Inn and The Sportsmans Inn, and also started an online petition – www.ipetitions.com/
petition/ivybridge-joiningwalkers-are-welcome-towns/ As well as promoting walking, Walkers Are Welcome campaign for better facilities for walkers, the continued maintenance of public footpaths, the development of way marked trails and better access to the town by public transport. Organisers believe the award will bring useful benefits to local residents and the business community. Ivybridge already fulfils many of the WAW criteria, and this is your chance to show you support – sign up now!
GOLDEN TIME FOR FLOWER CLUB Ivybridge Flower Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month! To mark this special occasion, members will enjoy a demonstration by National Demonstrator Jacqui Arnold to be held at The Watermark, followed by a toast to the club’s future with cake and a celebratory drink. The club began in November 1963 with an inaugural meeting at Garden Cottage. The first official club meeting was held the following month in the London Hotel. Subscriptions were a mere 10/- a year! It was affiliated to NAFAS early in 1965. Founder member Maureen Blair still attends the club and is a fount of flower arranging experience, as is Hilary Newcombe who joined very soon afterwards. As well as holding its own annual show for many years, the club regularly takes part in many local church flower festivals and has often provided arrangements for civic dinners and local events. The club also won a Gold

The club has had several different ‘homes’ down the years, including the community college and the Town Hall. Its current ‘home’ is The Watermark, where it meets every second Tuesday of the month. With a lively programme of demonstrations by national and area demonstrators and florists, and some in-house workshops, a regular membership of almost 50 enjoys entertaining and instructive evenings. NEW FACE CO-OPTED ON TO COUNCIL
THE ERME SCHOOL GREAT MINI BAKE OFF
Residents living in Filham Ward have a new representative on the town council. Cllr Graham Punchard was been co-opted on to the council at its October meeting as a replacement for former mayor Frances Green, who stepped down in September. Cllr Punchard said he was thankful to be co-opted and looking forward to serving Ivybridge. He said his aim is to listen to the concerns of all residents and reflect these at council meetings, and that he was looking forward to representing the residents of Filham.
The Erme Primary School is holding it’s very own Mini Bake Off event. The competition is open to any adults and children, who should bring along their home-baked creations to the free event on Saturday, 7 December, between 24.30pm, at the school. Local cubs were told to tidy their rooms – all to raise money for their pack. 1st Ivybridge Cubs’ fundraiser with a difference over the summer holidays raised over £300. The youngsters were asked to sort out their clothes and throw out any they didn’t need. The discarded items were collected by Bag2school, who paid money for the bags of clothes and shoes. The collection resulted in over 200 bags, ‘bagging’ over £300 for the pack. One Cub remarked: “We must have millions of clothes in here!”

IVYBRIDGE REMEMBERS 1914-2014 Our Flanders Field Memorial Garden (Harry’s Patch), by the roundabout at the top of Marjory Kelly Way, was donated for our use by the county council. A temporary sign tells members of the public what is happening. Bulbs will be planted late autumn to give spring colour to the area, and in February the branch will install a sign made by local companies as a donation to the project, a bench which has been donated by the local garden centre and some symbolic stones. In late March, the area will then be sown with wild flowers, heavily populated with poppies, including poppy seeds collected on a visit to France from the site of the front line at the start of the battle of the Somme on 1 June, 1916. A dedication of the site will be held next spring and part of this will include laying into the sign pennies from 1914-1918, and bullets picked up at the site of the dressing station that John McCrae wrote “in Flanders Fields”. We are trying to trace descendants of our war dead to attend this dedication and also to try to get a copy of old family photos. We are working with the college to provide a presentation of our war dead, and where

The Hannaford Boys possible to add the photos we get from members of the public. As part of the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the start of the First World War, we feel it is important the men of Ivybridge and its surrounding district who paid the ultimate price in this conflict are remembered. Another “Ivybridge Remembers” event will see every school child in the area get poppy seeds for them to plant next year. This is not the end of what we are doing for next year, just the beginning as new ideas are being explored all the time . Ray Wilson - Ivybridge RBL
Chairman of the Ivybridge Branch of the RBL, David Davis, reports on the latest news from the branch. The Branch is of course busy with the current Poppy Appeal. Last year, we raised an amazing £21,684.50, and although we know times are hard for everyone, we will strive to raise even more this year. The end of this year will see some changes at the Branch. Our Padre, the lovely Cyril Short, will, after many years of service, be stepping down after this year’s Remembrance Service. Cyril has been a wonderful Branch Padre, and we will all miss him greatly. After nine years as chairman, I have decided it’s time for a younger person to take over, so I am pleased to report that Dermot Roberts, a former Submariner Warrant Officer Coxswain, is to replace me in December. We will also have a new Vice Chairman, another ex Submariner, Richard Registered Charity No. 219279.
Lane, and I know that the branch will be in safe hands; both have some great ideas for fundraising events. Happily, we are retaining all of our other Branch officers and committee members, including two new lady members, Mo Andrews and Emily Handley. It has been proposed that I take over the vacant position of President of the Branch, which I will gladly accept. Next year sees the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War (WWI). Ray Wilson is doing a great job leading this project and a progress update is on the back of this pamphlet. Our AGM is at the Conservative Club on Wednesday, 11 December, at 8pm. If you would like to attend, please, for catering purposes, advise me. Finally, we will be holding a short service at 1045 on Monday, 11 November, at the War Memorial to mark Armistice Day. AS PART OF their study of World War II, Year 5 and 6 children at Manor Primary visited Slapton Sands, where the US military trained for the D-Day Landings. The children heard about the important role that Slapton played in this vital wartime mission and visited the Sherman Tank which stands as a memorial to those who died in Operation Tiger. They then scrambled the beaches in a re-make of the D-Day Landings.

Harvest help HARVEST FESTIVAL HAMPERS have been donated to Ivybridge Foodbank by the children of Woodlands Park Primary School. The school and invited guests celebrated Harvest Festival with a whole school assembly, where the children proudly showed off their singing voices. The children gave generously of tins and dried packets of food, which were made up into wonderful hampers.
ROYAL THANKS
Back to the Dark Ages Plymouth Museum’s “Museum in Transit” paid a visit to Stowford School’s Year 4 to support their work on Saxons and Vikings. Roland Sloggett, from the Museum, showed them a range of replicas and one very rare original Viking artefact and talked to them in general about the Dark Age period. From domestic life to war supremacy, he challenged the children to think about what the artefacts he gave them might have been used for and who might have used them. He also explained that the battle of Edington in 878 AD was a real turning point in British history – without King Alfred’s victory, he told them, we would all be speaking Danish today!
Ben (7), Milly (8) and Heather (10) with the hampers
THERE WAS A right Royal thank you waiting for Stowford School’s Hawks Year 6 class when they received a thank you card from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for a card the children sent to mark the arrival of Prince George last summer. The children sent the card, which they all signed, and wrote an accompanying letter to express their congratulations and good wishes on the exciting news. The reply card from Kensington Palace had a photo of the family and contained a message to the children. James, Olivia, Beth, Ethan and Jack are pictured with the card from Prince William and Katherine
STOWFORD’S YEAR 4 classes having been thinking of the qualities found in the people that inspire them and then doing some research in the New Testament to look for evidence about the qualities Jesus had. As part of their RE work, they invited Ivybridge Methodist Minister, Ralph Ward, into the class to talk about the qualities that Jesus had that inspired him. Ralph talked to them about a variety of incidents that happened during Jesus’ life time that mean he is still an inspiring figure to Christians today. From his ability to inspire loyalty and commitment amongst his chosen friends, to his ability to stand up for what was right and recognise the importance and value of every single person, Ralph demonstrated why Jesus still motivates people today.

Good design is good business
BUSINESS ASSETS W
hen we first start a business it is an exciting time and all we can really think about is surviving at first, and gradually building a good by David business to provide for our Richardson of families in the future. Richardsons As the business grows and Legal Services becomes a valuable asset, the owners frequently forget to take steps to protect those assets and provide for the continuance of the business should they lose mental capacity due to an illness such as dementia, or an accident, and consideration should also be given to the continuance of the business in the event of sudden death. In the case of a partnership, is there a Partnership Agreement? This is important for many reasons, just one of which is that without a partnership agreement a partnership will dissolve automatically on the death of any partner, no matter how many partners there are. Is there a Cross option Agreement, if appropriate, for a deceased partners share to be bought by the remaining partners should a partner die? In most cases, this is backed up by a life insurance policy to provide the cash to do this. Is your business eligible for full Business Property Relief? If it is eligible, the business assets including goodwill will be exempt from Inheritance tax. Not every business is eligible, but
Lily Design IVYBRIDGE DESIGN company Lily Design, publishers of The Ivybridge magazine, believes every impression your business makes is as important as the first. most trading business are, provided everything is set up correctly with this in mind. Business owners should consider taking out a Lasting Power of Attorney with a section geared specifically to giving someone they trust who is business competent, the power to make decisions in their interest should they lose mental capacity. Equally important can be a Business Will, which can name business executors and other special clauses regarding the continuance and eventual distribution of the business assets. If your combined personal assets including the value of the business are above the Inheritance Tax threshold you should be looking at what can be done to reduce this liability on your estate. It is surprising what can be done by introducing Discretionary Trusts for assets, ensuring Business Property Relief is maximised, looking at Discounted Gift Trusts, and using annual allowances to benefit sons and daughters.

Innovative treatment
An innovative new treatment for neurological injury, such as stoke, brain injury and spinal cord injury, is available in Ivybridge. A muscle stimulating bike may sound like something from the future or out of science fiction, but South Hams Physio, based in The Watermark, has the new Functional Electrical Stimulation bike, that aids fitness and recovery following neurological injury, and the results speak for themselves. The bike works by stimulating weak or paralysed muscles to work and peddle a seated bike. The theory is that the stimulation aids recovery of the nervous system. “The stimulation can really help with activating weak or paralysed muscles,” says South Hams Physio founder and clinical lead Nikki Smith. “We have had good results using muscle stimulation (FES) with clients, and many also report an improvement in cardiovascular fitness and circulation.” “Modern technology in healthcare seems to be the way forward for aiding recovery and good health, and we are very lucky at South Hams Physio to have such a bike, as the next nearest available bike for use in the community is Cardiff.” î See the South Hams Physio advert on page 18

CONTEMPLATING THE FUTURE and making plans in case the worst happens does not come easily to many people, but a new business in Ivybridge now offers an easy-tounderstand, caring service providing trusted advice to put you in control of your estate in the future. The importance of planning for your family’s future was brought into focus for Selena Aylett (pictured) with the birth of her first child. She comes from a large family herself and realised that as well as taking care of her assets, she had to plan for who would care for her children if she couldn’t do it herself. She discovered the importance of making guardianship arrangements financial trusts for her children. Making these arrangements highlighted to her the importance of having your wishes properly set out and led to an unexpected career change. Selena, who moved to Ivybridge with her family 18 months ago, originally trained as a barrister and solicitor and worked in private practice for 13 years. She recently decided to stop practising to set up S.E.A Will Writing to provide specialist legal services to local people at a reasonable cost. Frank Words – Protected Disclosures in the Workplace n 29th July, 2013, Section 111A(3) of the Employment Rights Act 1996 now enables employers to have frank but fair discussions with employees as to their performance with a view to a settlement and lawful termination of contract. There is no statutory right to have a companion or trade union representative present but the accompanying Code of Practice on Settlement Agreements recommends it. However, it only renders inadmissible the discussion in respect of unfair dismissal claims. Any claims relating to discrimination or grounds for automatic unfair dismissal (such as whistleblowing) are not protected. Also, you must avoid “improper behaviour”, i.e. stating that the employee will be dismissed if they do not sign the settlement agreement or giving an unreasonable period of time to consider the offer (a minimum period of 10 calendar days is a safe bet). Take legal advice before having such a discussion with an employee or, if an employee, review the offer with a solicitor.

What’s Up Doc? Reasonable Adjustments – Paying for Medical Treatment he Employment Appeal Tribunal upheld the finding that it could be a reasonable adjustment for an employer to pay for medical treatment in the case of Croft Vets v Butcher. In this case, the employee was suffering from depression. The employer referred her to a consultant psychiatrist who recommended 6 psychiatric sessions. Although the chances of successful treatment were 50%, the consultant was of the view that it would certainly lead to a significant improvement in the employee’s condition. Also, the treatment was limited to specifically providing support “to enable the Claimant to return to work and cope with the difficulties she had been experiencing at work”. If either facing a problem of this nature as an employer, or needing assistance as a disabled employee, seek legal advice early on.

A monthly guide to the wonderful wildlife you may see in Ivybridge
ABOUT IVYBRIDGE
Wild
BY MARGERY EVANS AND CELIA RALPH
WE DO NOT need to go to a distant arboretum to see some glorious autumn colours. This acer, in the centre of Ivybridge near the Ivy Bridge, must surely take some beating. We call it the burning bush as it seems to be on fire. If you haven’t noticed it, go into the London car park and you will be amazed at its beauty. Usually it retains its leaves well into November but then one day they will all be gone. There are other stunning bushes and trees in the same area thanks to some inspired planting presumably by the town council. Other parts of Ivybridge have wonderful autumn colours, too – Woodlands Park, Filham Park and of course Longtimber Woods. Like a beautiful sunset, autumn colours are transient and perhaps
it is this that makes many of us appreciate them so much. As always, nature has clever and intricate ways of coping with seasonal changes. Deciduous trees usually have large leaves to collect as much sunlight as possible to make the huge amounts of green chlorophyll needed to feed the tree. As the days shorten, they stop
facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine
twitter.com/ivybridgemag
making this and store any remaining nutrients in the trunk and branches. The leaves then become redundant and hormones set off a process called abscission which causes them to be sealed and cut off. The tree is then far less vulnerable to harsh winter storms and heavy snowfall. It is always sad to see the last of the leaves, but children – and some adults – enjoy walking through them or trying to catch the last of them and, of course, fungi acting on leaf litter is nature’s way of recycling, producing great compost. The skeletal shapes of many of our winter trees are often very beautiful, shapes not seen when the trees are in full leaf, so keep that camera handy. Winter is also a good time to see views that are otherwise obscured by trees, and
birds which would otherwise be hidden. And in this part of the world, it will not be long before the trees are bursting into leaf again with all the fresh greens and yellows of spring and the cycle begins all over again.
Next DWT event The next DWT event is an illustrated talk given by Andrew Cooper, the TV presenter and wildlife photographer, on Friday, 1 November, in the Old School at South Brent, starting at 7.30pm. Harriers’ athletes at the Plymouth Armada Half Marathon
HARRIERS IN GOOD FORM ERME VALLEY HARRIERS turned out in force at the Plymouth Armada Half Marathon and were rewarded with many fine performances. Alison McEwing was 2nd Senior Lady and also formed part of the successful winning ladies team, which included Emma Lake and Sarah Hirons. Lake was also 1st female vet 35. Neil Holmes was 2nd male vet 45, with Andrew Perry 3rd in the same category. Pride of place, though, goes to Ken Summers, who had a fantastic run (1.36.17) to be 1st male vet 60. Summers also broke his own club male vet 60 record of 1.37.09, set in Birmingham in 2010. Mike Lee also set a club male vet 70 record. Meanwhile, Simon Powell’s liking for Somerset continued at the Burnham Half Marathon, his improved time (1.28.45) bettering that set at Bridgwater. Sarah Hirons also had a good run, as she was 3rd lady and 34th overall in a time of 1.32.59. In Cornwall, Matt Brown did well at the Newquay 10k, finishing 41st overall (out of 475 finishers) in a time of 38.24. Further afield, Carol Hansen completed her first marathon at Bournemouth in a time of 4.55.26, whilst husband Mike ran in the half and was 21st overall in a time of 1.26.00. The first cross country event took place at Redruth with particularly good performances from Allister Bristow (6th in the Senior Men’s race) and Will Battershill, who won the Under 17 age category. Nik Sheppard and son Jobie made their club debuts at Redruth. î FIND OUT MORE: www.ermevalleyharriers.co.uk

Cup heartache
Swimmers’ gala glory
It's been cup heartache for the town's Sunday league team in October. After making the second round of the Devon Supplementary Cup with a tight 5-4 first round win against Activate for the first time in the club's history, FC Bridge Inn conceded deep into injury time to lose their second round tie 3-2 at home to Melbourne Inn. There was more late drama against Wembury Rovers in the Barry Williams Cup. FC Bridge Inn came from three goals down to lead 4-3 after 65 minutes, but ran out of steam, losing 8-4. The club are in more cup action on 20 October, when they face Barnes United in the Geoff Dawkins Cup, before league fixtures resume on 27 October with a home game against Activate. î November fixtures: 3rd: v Navy Inn res (A); 10th: v Hyde Park AFC (A); 24th: Kings Tamerton CA 'B' (A)
DINNATON SC swimmers came away from three days intense competition at the Plymouth Cities gala with an impressive haul of medals and achievements. A 21-strong team, aged 9 to 13 years old, represented the club, competing in 33 events. In total, the team won 42 medals – 9 gold, 15 silver and 18 bronze – and achieved 106 Personal Bests. The prolific Jones brothers earned 20 medals between them – Quinn three gold, one silver and six bronze, Reid one gold, five silver and four bronze. Emily Morgan-Hughes, at nine one of the squad’s youngest competitors and competing in her first competition, won two golds and a silver.
