HELP SUPPORT IVYBRIDGE LIBRARY A group which supports Ivybridge Library is inviting people who want to help this important community resource to join them. The Friends of Ivybridge Library (FOIL) was established in 2008 when the library moved from Keaton Road to The Watermark. Since then, FOIL has supported the library by fundraising for equipment and helping with events, such as the summer
reading challenge. Recent events have included a successful poetry competition with over 200 entries and a well-attended quiz night that raised nearly £500 for the library. The group is run by a small committee and anyone who would like to help support the library is welcome to join. For more information, please contact Gary Miller on garyjo116@gmail.com

Around 50 residents of Ivybridge who might otherwise have spent the day alone attended a special Christmas Day lunch at The Watermark organised by Ivybridge Town Council. The lunch would not have been possible without the support of generous local businesses, including Gribble’s Butchers, Friary Mill, Cllr Mike Saltern, Ivor Jones & Company Ltd, Endsleigh Garden Centre, Co-operative Foods, Nearly Naked Veg Company, Caterfood, Tamar Fresh, Diamond Disposables, M&D Drinks, Bidfood, Turtley Corn Mill and MJ Baker., plus all the volunteers who assisted on the day.
Ivybridge is to get a windfall of £276,330 from the latest tranche of Section 106 money released by South Hams District Council. The money comes from a legal agreement between local authorities and developers and is part of over £500,000 approved by the council for community projects in areas where developments are taking place. As part of the agreements, the funding will go towards open space, play and sports projects. The latest money is earmarked for improvements at Filham Park, including improving the current access road and enhancing pedestrian access. It will also provide for more sports pitches in accordance with the playing pitch strategy for football, in particular, as well as
improving the additional area for rugby at the park and possibly extra space to accommodate cricket. More funding, for Woodlands Park and some of the smaller play areas on housing estates, will be forthcoming from agreements around the developments on Cornwood Road. In the same round of funding, Modbury received £57,050 and s106 money match-funding an English Cricket Board grant will enable South Brent cricketers to enjoy improved club facilities. “The amounts received through s106 agreements go a long way to supporting communities to come together, through the creation and improvement of play and leisure facilities,” said SHDC’s Cllr Hilary Bastone.

EARLY ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPPING IN AND NEAR IVYBRIDGE People are at liberty to make maps of public areas, and the counties and towns of England have been mapped in varying detail and with varying accuracy over centuries. The profession is called land surveying, being those people who take measurements in the towns and countryside, and they may differ from or may also be cartographers who compile the data into maps. Our national mapping agency, the Ordnance Survey, began its work in south west England in the late 1700s. The principal man in the field was William Mudge (1762-1820), from a Plymouth family; and related to those in Plympton, remembered in the street name Mudge Way. Mudge’s work was to observe directions with a theodolite, deriving angles and triangles to form a network across the country. Mudge chose hilltops for his theodolite work, to be able to see
08-09_TIM_Feb19.indd 8
long distances and to have as few sites as possible in this new network. He chose Butterdon Hill, 3km north from the Ivy Bridge, which point is remembered by a cairn of stones gathered from the moor. It is a kilometre further north from Western Beacon which can be seen from Ivybridge. His choice was good enough that the Ordnance Survey built a concrete pillar nearby in the 1930s. This latter mark is the more famous sign of triangulation, though even these are now redundant. Mudge was on Butterdon Hill in 1795 and observed to various other hilltops (including Bolt Head and Kit Hill), and other points of interest such as the Eddystone Lighthouse (which structure is now on Plymouth Hoe as Smeaton’s Tower). The triangulation was followed by a team from the Interior or Topographical Survey
TOP: A section of the first Ordnance Survey Map of Devon, Sheet XXIV, 1809, and, above, the benchmark at Butterdon Hill
who measured the detail (the roads, the houses) between the triangles established by Mudge. The first Ordnance Survey map of Devon was printed in 1809. Whilst at Butterdon, Mudge also determined its absolute position (ie in latitude and longitude), and the direction of True North. Mudge was principally involved in mapping in plan, ie determining a model of the Earth in the horizontal plane. However, he did take vertical angles too in order
to measure heights across the countryside. His successor, Thomas Colby, concentrated on the task of determining heights and a significant line of levels was undertaken from Bristol, through Wrangaton, Bittaford and Ivybridge to Plymouth (Devonport Dockyard), in about 1848. The evidence of Colby’s work can be found on the north western parapet of the Skew Bridge east of Bittaford, on New Bridge, Ivybridge, and on the moor leading up to Mudge’s mark (which is just north west of the current pillar). The published heights above sea level are 60m at the New Bridge and 365m on the Butterdon Pillar. For more information on land surveying and benchmarking please visit the Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group website

A HORRIBLE SHOW
14_TIM_Feb19.indd 14
Horrible Histories: Live on Stage comes to Theatre Royal Plymouth this month. This is a chance to catch two hilarious shows, Terrible Tudors and Awful Egyptians, which feature eye-popping 3D special effects. Terrible Tudors takes a trip through the horrible Henries to the end of evil Elizabeth and hear the legend (and the lies!) about the torturing Tudors. Find out the fate of Henry’s headless wives and his punch up with the Pope. Meet Bloody Mary and see Ed fall dead in his bed. Survive the Spanish Armada as it sails into the audience! Awful Egyptians invites you to meet the fascinating Pharaohs, gasp at the power of the pyramids and discover the foul facts of death and decay with the meanest mummies in Egypt. Are you ready to rumble with Ramesses the Great? Dare you enter through the Gates of the Afterlife? It’s the history of Egypt with the nasty bits left in! A special feature of the productions are the amazing 3D effects called Bogglevision! Among an array of 3D illusions the audience will see the Spanish Armada firing cannonballs into
the auditorium or the Mummy reaching out to grab them! These two hilarious historical journeys through the squelchiest and yuckiest moments in British and Egyptian history are perfect entertainment for anyone aged from 5 to 105! Horrible Histories: Live on Stage runs from Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd February. Tickets are priced from £12 and can be booked at www. theatreroyal.com or by calling 01752 267222.
YOU STUPID DARKNESS A new play, set in a call centre for Brightline helpline, which looks at the struggle for optimism and community amid the chaos of a collapsing world comes to the Theatre Royal Plymouth (Thursday 7th - Saturday 23rd February). In a cramped, crumbling office four volunteers spend a few hours every Tuesday night on the phone to strangers telling them everything is going to be OK... Tickets are priced at £15 and can be booked at www.theatreroyal. com or by calling 01752 267222.

STEVE KNIGHTLEY: ROADWORKS
As a long-serving troubadour of the folk and acoustic music scene, master songwriter and storyteller Steve Knightley has spent much of his life on the road, collecting songs, stories, anecdotes and observations – with the odd disaster along the way. Steve once again takes to England’s highways and byways to present ‘Roadworks’ – a show which builds on the success of his sell-out 2018 solo tour ‘Songs and Stories’. This is a stripped-back, one-man show that’s infused with wit, warmth and alchemy, beautifully illustrated by his trenchant songs of history, love and conscience. Sat 2nd Feb.
TOM STADE: I SWEAR TO... Following last year’s smash-hit UK tour, the Canadian comedy legend is back with a new show. Welcome back to ‘I Swear To...’, picking up where he left off as an hour simply wasn’t long enough. Join Tom as he attempts to figure out exactly where he fits into this emerging new world of feelings and FaceTime. Exactly when did he, and all his stuff, become vintage – and why didn’t he see it coming? Armed with his usual swagger and playful sense of mischief, join Tom as he explores these generational conundrums, and a whole lot more. One of the most prolific and
unforgettable show. See it at The Watermark on Friday, 1st March (please note, this is a new date), tickets on sale now.
engaging stand-ups of our time. As seen on Ch4’s Comedy Gala, BBC 1’s Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, The John Bishop Show, Live at the Apollo and now at The Watermark on 27th February!

every child is different, that’s why our nurseries are different... Little Orchard Montessori Nurseries aim to provide a caring, friendly environment where your child is encouraged to follow their own interests, learn at their own pace and have fun whilst doing so. We use the highly-acclaimed Montessori Method to ensure we bring out the very best in every child. Our nurseries are small enough to enable us to deliver a personal and individual approach to your child’s development, but big enough to allow your child to engage with others and learn important social skills. Our nurseries have a variety of outdoor spaces and are in great locations, enabling us to take the children on walks, trips and visits.

All Saints
ART AWARD Sparkwell All Saints Primary School is celebrating receiving the Silver Artsmark Award from the Arts Council in recognition of its broad curriculum that
encourages learning in the arts. The school has also enjoyed an arts week, welcoming some local artists to the school to work with the children.
The children have also had important ‘speak out; stay safe’ talks from the NSPCC. KS2 children soon begin Bikeability sessions.
v Manor
School
REVERSE ADVENT Manor School has thanked “our wonderful families” who supported the school’s Reverse Advent Calendar. Each class collected donations, which the Foundation children then sorted ready for delivery. During a welly walk, the school

GENEROUS DONATION Thanks to a donation from Richardsons Legal Services, the 116 children at The Erme Primary School enjoyed a trip to see Dick Whittington at Plymouth Theatre Royal. David Richardson (pictured far right) said: “We strive to build relationships within the local community. We were
therefore delighted to support The Erme Primary School by bringing a little festive cheer to the pupils and waved them off on the trip.” Kay Winstone of Friends of The Erme Primary School said: “Everybody from The Erme would like to thank Richardsons Legal Services for their generosity.”

Butchers Sam and Scott are on hand in the Fore Street shop to provide advice and tips on what to buy, how much you need and how best to cook it
SHOP LOCAL FOR PERSONAL TOUCH Gribble’s make it easier to buy from them… Success in business means “thinking outside the box” says Mark Gribble. And he should know. He started his company 20 years ago when he needed a butcher to process meat from the ostriches he was farming. Then, one day, a customer who had been let down by suppliers needed beef, lamb and pork and Gribble’s Butchers was born. Today, Gribble’s supplies over 70 pubs, restaurants and hotels as well as welcoming customers to shops in Ivybridge, Plympton and at Tordean Farm on the A38, selling meat from local farmers and Westcountry suppliers. The business has grown by listening to customers and finding ways to serve their needs – Gribble’s had click and collect orders before the supermarkets. The Ivybridge shop in Fore Street has been open since 2004 and

is run by two enthusiastic and knowledgeable young butchers, Sam Frankham and Scott Parsons, with support from Paula Hingston, who makes all the pies and pasties on the premises. The team like to build up a personal relationship with their customers. “It’s nice to chat to people because we can give them tips on how much meat they need and how they want it packaged,” says shop manager Sam. “They might want some chicken breasts individually vacuum packed, or they might want a particular beef cut. “TV chefs are very good for us – they might have a recipe using something like ox cheeks and then everyone wants them, although there are only two per animal! “We start with a whole carcass

n Ivybridge Flower Club NATURAL APPROACH Miranda Hackett, a local floral designer, delighted club members with her natural approach to her designs. Miranda moved to Devon two years ago and gains her inspiration from the coast and countryside. She also supports the local economy by sourcing locally-grown British flowers and greenery, therefore appreciating each season, and uses twigs to support the plant material instead of floral foam, which is much kinder to the environment. Miranda’s ‘Wild and Wintry’ arrangement used beech, cornice, magnolia buds, catkins ,forsythia and willow as a framework, with greenery of bay, pittosporum, mimosa, laurel, camellia and ivy, for her chosen flowers, tulips, narcissi agapanthus and roses. It was a stunningly beautiful, natural display. The different textures, shapes and colours were wonderful. Her smaller ‘table’ arrangement used the same natural materials. There is no meeting in February as the club is having its annual club dinner at Turtley Corn Mill on 11th February. The next meeting is on 11th March, at 7.30pm at The Watermark when area demonstrator, Elaine Reynolds will present ‘Cornish delight’. All are welcome to attend. n The Arts Society RAJ ARCHITECTURE The architecture of the British Raj is remarkable, ‘let’s celebrate it’ is Anthony Peers’ call at this month’s talk at the Arts Society. Anthony will talk about colonial architecture in India, the buildings, their history and their future. Focussing initially on the work of George Gilbert Scott in Mumbai, he will branch out to consider the broader historical, cultural and architectural context of the architecture of the British Raj. Arts Society meetings are held in Kingsbridge Methodist Hall on Wednesday evenings at 7pm for 7.30pm, and again on Thursday mornings at 10am for 10.30am. n Ivybridge U3A UKRAINE “Ukrainian update” is the subject of Ian McClure’s talk at this month’s general meeting of Ivybridge U3A on Monday, 18th February, in The Watermark, starting at 2pm. The talk is an update on the one he gave two years ago. So much has happened in the region over the past months that he thought an update would be in order. The talk will briefly cover the history and geography of Ukraine and then move on to recent events, from the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 to the ‘Kerch incident’ last month. Ian served in Ukraine as a military attaché in 1998 and has been
back many times since, as a military interpreter, election observer and even as a tourist.. i 07866 077030 / ivybridge.u3a@ gmail.com / ivybridge-u3a.org.uk
n Probus Club DOWSING The club’s first lunch of 2019, held at Wrangaton Golf Club, was a great success. Following lunch, members were entertained – and educated – by an excellent presentation by George Seager-Berry, a retired surveyor, on the subject of ‘dowsing’. After a brief introduction and historical overview of the subject, which is about 5,000 years old, George took members on a journey from Elizabeth I’s use of German dowsers to track down certain minerals up to current and personal stories of how he has used dowsing to track down lost items or using pendula to determine positive or negative answers to binary questions. The session concluded with a number of experiments involving members trying their hands at some simple experiments. Speaker Secretary, Howard Webster, always concerned at the members’ reaction to speakers, at one point looked across the room to see (as he put it) “several geriatric men wandering around with divining rods and swinging pendula”. means you have cash available to spend how you choose, unlike with some other saving schemes where vouchers or hampers are returned to those who have saved money throughout the year.”
People are being warned to be vigilant for an “unpaid tax” telephone scam. Callers claiming to be from HMRC are demanding money for “unpaid tax”, asking for bank details and threatening arrest or legal action for non-payment of ‘taxes’. Variations on this scam are callers offering a tax rebate, or demanding payment in the form of iTunes gift cards or Google Play cards. HMRC will never contact people in this manner and never ask for bank details over the phone. Ivybridge police advice is to hang up, don’t call back and report the fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk People are asked to talk to older friends and relatives to warn them of the scam. And local stores are being asked to be vigilant if an elderly customers try to buy large numbers of these gift cards .

A simple savings challenge could help people save nearly £700 in a year. The ‘1p per day’ savings challenge sees people start by putting away a single penny to begin with, then add 1p to the amount they save each day throughout the year; on day one you save 1p, on day two 2p, on day three 3p... on day 100 save £1, on day 101 save £1.01... on day 200 save £2 and so on. Anyone starting on 1st January and sticking with the plan will, by the end of the year, have accumulated £667.95. The challenge is supported by Westcountry Savings and Loans, the largest local credit union providing financial services to communities across the region and offering a truly local alternative to traditional banking and credit institutions.

■ RICHARDSONS LEGAL SERVICES
ESTATE PLANNING By Monica Salvioni Reeder – Operations & Client Services at Richardsons Legal Services During the course of our life, we seem to plan for almost everything, from the house we will be buying to the cake we will be bake at the weekend. However, there is something that we do not seem very keen on planning – what is going to happen when we die? Though it’s not exactly pleasant, I admit, it is the only certainty in our life – it’s going to happen whether we plan for it or not. If we think about it a bit deeper, it will certainly occur to us that, OK, we are not going to be there, but our family will be. Do you really want them to struggle with you dying intestate (that is, with no Will)? Do you want them to go through Probate, paying Probate fees? Worse still, do you want them to struggle with a third party claiming
on the estate? Do you want them to have to painfully choose your funeral and struggle to pay for it? The answer I suspect is no. However unpleasant the thought of passing away, the thought of leaving your children to deal with an unplanned estate is even more distressing. Estate planning practitioners can help you reach a peace of mind by helping you create: • A Will, the first line of defence in estate planning, makes sure that at least you will not die intestate and that your estate will be distributed according to your wishes; providing there are no claims by third parties under the Inheritance Act 1975; • Lasting Power of Attorney, which ensures that people you trust are able to speak on your

behalf and protect you when you are no longer able to deal with your property, financial, health and welfare matters; • A Home Protection Trust, which can protect you against unforeseen eventualities, against any claims by third parties under the Inheritance Act 1975 and, last but not least, your assets will pass seamlessly to your children without applying for a Grant of Probate and paying Probate fees; • A Funeral Plan, detailing your wishes and, crucially, paid for at today’s prices. All these legal tools are as important as each other. An estate planning practitioner will listen to you, will find out what your personal and financial circumstances are, and find the best solution to put all your affairs in order. WELL-FITTING SHOES?
By Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry Winter is here? Your feet are enclosed in shoes most of the time, so if they don’t fit well, you could get corns and callus forming at friction and pressure points. I always promote well-fitting shoes. They must have enough room for your feet and not slop around. If you have a strap, laces or Velcro fastening at the ankle your foot will stay secure at the back and not slip into the

HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY SELL YOUR HOME Now that the frenetic Christmas and New Year holiday period is behind us and the days are starting to get longer, many of us are thinking about plans for the coming year. The success (or otherwise!) of New Year resolutions aside, this time of year is often one when we make other major decisions, such as searching for a new home. Traditionally, it has been considered that the best time of year to put your property on the market is early- to mid-spring, when the better weather and longer days can provide a great opportunity to showcase your home at its very best. However, a successful sale is dependent on many other factors and as with most things in life, preparation is the key.
Most people appreciate that additional costs associated with preparing their home by giving it this. TAX RETURN FACTS By Simon Jilks Apologies for not supplying an article last month. We have been very busy with 2018 tax returns, but now the filing deadline of 31st January has passed we are able to breathe again. Hopefully, by now, you have submitted your 2018 tax return and you are looking forward to preparing 2019! I would encourage anyone who needs to prepare a tax return to think about it as soon as the tax year is over. That way, you can plan for any tax liabilities in advance, as tax isn’t due any sooner if you submit your return sooner. In fact, if you are due a refund, then that will be issued once the return is submitted. Doing things earlier also saves stress for your accountant. If you are unsure if you should be preparing a tax return, then drop me a line and we can chat about your situation.
26-27_TIM_Feb19.indd 27
Doing things earlier also saves stress for your accountant HMRC have issued some statistics I found interesting (perhaps it’s just me?). At 31st December 2018, only 52% of people who needed to submit a tax return had done so, meaning approximately 5.5 million tax returns would have been filed in January. If you still haven’t quite found the time to look at your 2018 tax return, you will now unfortunately, have a £100 automatic penalty, which can be appealed on genuine grounds (“my dog ate it” doesn’t count, sorry). After three months daily penalties are levied at £10, which soon add up. Also, if any tax was due for 2017/18 that too should have been paid by 31st January 2019, which will also attract a penalty if paid late.

narrow part of the toe area. This is why I don’t recommend slip-ons. They need to be made tighter so that they don’t fall off therefore they often pinch or rub your foot. You need to look for a shoe with a squarish toe box that is both wide enough and deep enough for your toes. You should have at least a finger’s width extra length beyond the longest toe. It is particularly important if you have diabetes to check your feet regularly especially if you buy new shoes. Neuropathy or nerve damage may mean that you can’t feel them rubbing. Why not invest in a mirror and fit it near a chair, so you can lift your foot up and look at the sole without having to bend over? If you do have some hard skin, why not come and see me and get it professionally treated. i Call 01752 426075, email feet@

icc SISTERS ARE SUPADANCERS
Lucy (left) and Chloe at the National Supadance Finals
Two Ivybridge Community College students, sisters Lucy (Year 10), and Chloe (Year 8) Barnfield competed in the National Supadance Finals in Blackpool in December. The girls competed in both Open Competitions (individual couples), as well as in a team event (four couples) in a relay-type dance off. The girls achieved fourth place in the team event, an amazing achievement which made the long journey up and back all the more worthwhile. The girls compete in the Supadance League (southern leg), regularly travelling to Reading on Sunday mornings to put their skills to the test. After careful consideration, the two sisters have decided to split with their current dance partners and will be joining forces to take on the competition head-on as a partnership. Chloe has been competing in the under 12s, and has happily sat in the top 10 throughout most of the southern leg competitions this year, however she will now move up to the under 16s, which is a much tougher category. The girls’ mum commented: “When they asked to start dancing lessons, I had no idea how long it would last and wondered if they may eventually tire of it. “But I was wrong, they love it and their passion is constantly growing. They have both shown a natural propensity for dance and I swell with pride to watch their abilities develop.”

Cleo Perry with the two gold medals she won at the SW Cross Country Championships and, right, the Harriers’ ladies team at the Westward League Cross Country race
Over the Christmas period there were relatively few races for athletes of Erme Valley Harriers to compete, but they did have a good turnout at the Cockington Caper where nine athletes completed the country course. Russ Mogridge was 1st mv55,
Emma Lake was 1st fv40 and Ken Summers was 1st mv65. Andy Newcombe, Dave Church, Kate Medlicott, Katy Mogridge, Richard and Lindsay Lane also ran. An unusual race took place on
the Flete Estate at Mothecome. The event, known as ‘Race the Light’ started at dusk and finished in the dark for some. The distance of the multi-terrain course of some 8.5 miles. Faith Taylor had a particularly good run and was 1st lady and 7th overall. Ewan Lake, Anna King, Hannah Walters, Donncha Scollard and Sophie Weeks also successfully completed the event.
Newcombe (45.35), Alison Engledew (50.56) and Phil Adderley (50.59). Meanwhile, Cleo Perry competed in the South West Cross Country Championships at Yeovil. Perry was in great form finishing 13th overall and winning the vet 45 title. Perry was also part of the winning Devon Ladies team. Perry ran the 5,280m in a time of 21.41 on a very hilly course.
In the first road race of 2019, four 18-Nov-16 6:07 PM Page 37 37_TIM_Dec16_The_Ivybridge_magazine Harriers completed the January Jaunt 10K at Plympton, with Dave Engledew (42.25) the first Harrier home. He was followed by Andy
