As one new minibus is delivered to Ivybridge Ring & Ride, there are fears another could explode... under pressure of the balloons set to fill it at a 25th anniversary celebration event at Glanvilles Mill on Sunday, 2nd September. The new bus, awarded by the Department of Transport to help boost the charity’s ability to connect people across the South Hams, has arrived just in time for celebrations that mark 25 years since the charity started its operation. Since then, a small staff supported by a team of dedicated volunteers has provided vital door-to-door and wheelchair-friendly transport to those in the area without access to public transport. The services have helped people to get out and about to enjoy life, keeping their independence and escaping entrapment in their homes. Today’s oldest passenger, so typical of all the passengers, is 95-year-old Vera from South Brent, who said: “When I was recommended the Ring & Ride by a neighbour, using it was

BEST-EVER RESULTS FOR COLLEGE A-LEVEL STUDENTS Ivybridge Community College Year 13 students celebrated excellent A-level results, bettering previous results achieved by the college. Students achieved a 100% pass rate across all subjects, with 51% achieving A*-B grades, of which 8% were A* grades, which included a number of high-performing students who achieved straight A* grades in all subjects.
Many students achieved grades better than the national averages as well as out-performing their target grades, a well-deserved reward for their hard work and determination. Over 140 of the students have accepted their university offers, with 30% going on to Russell Group institutions. Principal Rachel Hutchinson said: “It was a great delight to
watch our students receive some of the best examination results in the country, which demonstrates the sheer hard work and determination by our Year 13 students and the high quality of teaching provided by such committed staff from across the College. “We look forward to hearing about their future career pathways and wish each and every student the very best of luck.”

SPARKWELL SCHOOL OPEN DAYS If you are considering options for your child starting school in September 2019, Sparkwell Primary School is holding two open day sessions this autumn. The first is on Tuesday, 2nd October, at 9.30am (with an option to join the EYFS at a forest school session), the second on Wednesday, 10th October, at 2pm. An Ivybridge group which organises free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of people aged 75 and over who live alone, offering a regular and vital friendship link, is reaching out to the local community for help. Contact the Elderly has a thriving local group who attend a tea party on the third Sunday each month in a volunteer’s home. They are picked up and taken to the venue by volunteer drivers.
It’s as straightforward as that, but it makes a huge difference to the people’s lives and they look forward to it so much. The group is looking for people who can help with transporting an elderly person to and from an address in Ivybridge one Sunday afternoon a month on a voluntary basis? They are also looking for people willing to host a tea party in their home; if you have a downstairs loo and have an easy entrance to your
home, they’d love to hear from you. If you are elderly, living alone and feeling lonely you would be welcome to join our group. Contact the Elderly is the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people through face-to-face contact. i If you would like find out more about how you could help, contact Christine on 01752 892460 or Judith on 01752 894766

STILL TIME TO PUT FORWARD YOUR UNSUNG HEROES Nominations are still open for this year’s David Britton Citizen of the Year and Nick Cummins Community Group of the Year awards. These prestigious awards are for individuals and groups whom Ivybridge Town Council feel have provided an invaluable input into the community and have made a difference through their involvement in the town. There are many unsung heroes
who work, often behind the scenes, making a real impact on the community. The council urges people to think who would be worthy recipients of the Citizens Award and the Community Group of the Year Award. The award can go to people living outside the town although they must have provided a service valued by people within Ivybridge.
Nominations will be considered by the council at October’s full council meeting. i To nominate an individual or
group, write to Ivybridge Town Council, Erme Court, Leonards Road, Ivybridge, PL21 0SZ (or email lindsay lane@ivybridge.gov.uk) giving full details of name/group, address and reasons why they are being put forward. Also include your own name and address.

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS One way to study the history of Devon’s buildings and landscapes is to look at the pictorial record of an area. Whether an artist’s impression, or a photographer’s timely snap, comparing historic and modern images is a great way to identify changes. These images of our local area, along with many thousands taken around the county, are part of the DRA’s growing image bank, which provides an invaluable resource for researchers. If you have any images of Devon’s buildings and landscapes that you would like to add to the collection for others to study and enjoy, then please do get in touch. You do not have to part with the original, our team is on hand to scan your photos and postcards into our system, to preserve them for the future.

NAVVIES IN IVYBRIDGE With the double tracking of the railway line and conversion from broad to standard gauge during the late 19th century, a new viaduct was required at Ivybridge. This was to replace the original granite and timber structure designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the South Devon Railway. Sir James Inglis, the General Manager and Consulting Engineer of the Great Western Railway, led the project. The new viaduct, comprising of rock-faced granite piers (some locally sourced) supporting round arches with granite spandrels and a brick parapet, was completed in 1894. The task of building the viaduct was very labour intensive. The name for workmen constructing the railways was “navvies”. The word is derived from the word ‘navigator’, a description of the men who built the first navigation canals in the 18th century. Using only basic tools such as picks and shovels, it was estimated that around 250,000 navvies
The replacement viaduct with original train station
were employed in Britain at the height of railway construction period of the mid-19th century. As railways were a vital component of the Industrial Revolution, the work of these men was considered crucial. They often lived by the rail line in so-called shanty towns.
By the standards of the time, navvies were well paid, at least compared to factory workers. However, they had to eat well because of the demanding physical work undertaken but it was their reputation for drinking which was more of a concern, with many towns fearing
the arrival of the navvies! The 1891 Ivybridge census recorded a significant number of ‘workmen in temporary residence, engaged in the upgrading and double tracking of the Great Western Railway’. This large number of navvies prompted the local clergy to provide a ‘Navvy Mission Room’ on the site opposite the existing parish church. Due to the very nature of their work these men were regarded as an isolated class so having a meeting place was beneficial. Church services were regularly provided, as well as temperance meetings (which encouraged the consumption of alcohol in moderation or total abstinence) and other activities which focussed on the general welfare of the men and their families. The Mission Room in Ivybridge was later rebuilt as the first church hall in 1905. i More details regarding the viaduct, along with many other topics, can be viewed on the Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group website

An award-winning Ivybridge artist is inviting people to view her new paintings and bookbinding at her studio during this month’s Devon Open Studios. Amanda Pellatt, well known locally for her work on community engagement projects, including the Ivybridge Arts Festival, describes herself as an ecological artist, and is a Dartmoor walking guide. She recently took part in the Moor than Meets the Eye Parishscapes Project, during which she led community art walks and workshops. “My painting practice includes making my own canvas stretchers and creating impressionistic works with luscious oil colours,” explained Amanda. A new direction for Amanda is book art, attending Mary Bartlett’s bookbindery at Dartington making bespoke bound sketchbooks. Her work has been recognised by a panel of judges from The Devon Artist Network, who awarded Amanda an emerging artist bursary and the Joanna Radford Prize. “The awards will help create a
platform to develop my practice and I hope in return that I will be seen as an ambassador for art, something I have always striven to be.” i Amanda’s studio is at 20 Bridge
Park, Ivybridge. Details of opening times can be found on amandapellatt. com or in the open studios guidebook
Other local studios opening include REDPOD ARTS at The Clay Factory, between Ivybridge and Bittaford, which hosts lots of fantastic art including ceramics, painting, mixed media and drawing from its growing community. SUE IFOULD, lively, expressive paintings in various media created

LOTTO WINNER An Ivybridge resident was the lucky winner of the first SeaMoor Lotto by matching three numbers to win £25. A further nine people matched two numbers and won three extra tickets to play the lottery, and to celebrate the start of the local lottery, nine people were selected at random and won some fantastic prizes. A total of 730 tickets were sold ahead of the first SeaMoor Lotto draw, which supported more than 60 local charities and good causes across South Hams and West Devon. With ticket sales at this level, SeaMoor Lotto is currently on track to raise nearly £24,000 a year for local good causes. Tickets cost just £1 and each ticket has a 1-in-50 chance of winning a prize every week. This includes a £25,000 jackpot prize for matching all six numbers in the correct order. Sixty per cent of the money raised goes to local good causes, with the remaining 40% going into the prize fund and paying for the running costs. wellbeing PAINFUL TOENAILS Damaged toenails? There are things that can be done to improve appearance, says Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry Do your toenails hurt? There are many reasons why a nail might hurt, but most of them can be helped by a visit to a podiatrist, so don’t suffer, come and see us. The nail could be in-growing and cutting into the skin around the nail, in which case we can treat it conservatively or with a minor
operation to remove the offending portion of the nail. It is important to prevent the nail being injured by pressing on the top of shoes, or if your toes curl down towards the floor they may tap on it, causing damage to the nail. If you damage the growing cells at the base of your nail they will grow a thickened, disfigured nail which you will have for the rest of your life. Prevention is the only way of avoiding this damage. However, if yours are already affected there are several things we can do to improve the appearance, so please do pay us a visit. i Call 01752 426075 or visit abbeyroadpodiatry.com Jackie Thomas BSc (Hons) is a fully qualified HCPC registered podiatrist. SEVEN SIGNS YOU’RE NOT AS HEALTHY AS YOU THINK We can all feel tired and worn down by the trials and tribulations of busy lives, but there are some red flags that could point to something more serious. n Poor sleep pattern: Sleep is about getting all-round rest, and is vital if you’re going to fend of illness. Often if we’re having difficulty nodding off it’s due to the amount of the hormone cortisol in our body, so basically try to destress before bed to combat this. n Apple-shape: One type of overweight is more dangerous than the other – those with apple curves, more fat around their waist and belly, are at a higher risk of heart disease. n Constant exhaustion: If tiredness is becoming chronic then it might be worth checking it out –

from thyroids to burnt out adrenal glands it could be a problem that needs to be addressed. n Dark urine throughout the day: Your urine should really be as clear as possible, particularly later in the day. The darker it is the more dehydrated you are, so start by guzzling water, and if that doesn’t work look into it further. n Snoring: Although snoring is usually benign, it can be the sign of this sleep disorder which could lead to hypertension and heart failure. n Cracked lips and corners of the mouth: Cheilitis, or cracked lips, could mean you have a deficiency in B vitamins, with the lack of B12 a culprit in particular. This is pretty easy to rectify with supplements or a change of diet.

KICK AUTUMN INTO GEAR During the summer we feel motivated, energised and generally full of the sun’s good stuff. Even early mornings can feel hotter than an October afternoon. We spend our days doing things, often outside, and the idea of exercising exposed to the elements no longer sounds like some vision of hell. Therefore, usually we’re healthier in the summertime. On the

whole we eat less stodgy foods, boost our salad intake and remain active for more hours in the average day. Autumn can either be a mean-spirited month, or the beginning of a whole new you. Maybe now is the time to start making the most of that gym membership. There’s a whole new range of food coming into season, which is ready to be explored and experimented on in the kitchen. And this is the perfect time to
take up a new hobby that will keep you active through winterlike yoga, for example. It will certainly help those aches and pains, making it easier to keep up with exercise when perhaps the most appealing option is likely to be staying indoors. Just because that great ball of joy in the sky is beginning to be shrouded in a kind of nimbus pea soup doesn’t mean we have to let everything go and start gorging on all the things we deem to be comfort-based.

SIMON WESTON: MY LIFE, MY STORY
One man’s journey from the front line of war, being on the edge of death, to being a happy and contented father, grandfather and national treasure. Simon Weston OBE was trapped on the burning RFA Sir Galahad after it was bombed during the Falklands War in 1982. He suffered burns to 46% of his body and lost many of his comrades. He is one of the most recognised faces of the conflict and in this show he discusses his experiences with his close friend David FitzGerald. This truly inspirational tale will take you from the most horrific moments of the conflict to his numerous operations, to his slow recovery over the years and to the public recognition he receives today. The highs and lows, the laughter and the memories from the questions that only David can ask with answers only Simon can give. He reflects on the people he has met, which includes members of

Friday, 14th September. She’s a regular on Mock The Week and a much-loved figure on Live At The Apollo, as well as being all over BBC Radio 4, for whom she’s making her very own series in 2018 after extensive stints on ‘The News Quiz’, ‘Just A Minute’, ‘The Now Show’ and plenty more. All this makes it sound like Zoe Lyons has some sort of idea what she’s doing in life. But does she? Or is she the perfect example of an Entry Level Human? Decide for yourself, as this hugely popular comic returns with a fresh crop of ‘quick-fire observational gags, delivered with utter conviction’, not to mention ‘proper laugh-outloud one-liners’. Age 14+.

HELP WITH NEW BENEFITS SYSTEM People in Ivybridge and the surrounding area who are experiencing difficulties with the new Universal Credit (UC) system, especially if they are experiencing problems receiving their benefits, budgeting or if they face a sanction and need to challenge it, are being urged to contact Citizens Advice South Hams. The advice follows the findings of a new report from national Citizens Advice highlighting problems with the application process for UC. The report found that although the benefit is working well for many, a significant number have had problems with the application process. A third of people who’ve been helped by the charity say they struggle to provide the evidence needed to finish off their UC application. The new welfare system – which combines Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit, Hous-
ing Benefit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance and Income-based Employment Support Allowance into a single monthly payment – is due to come into force in the South Hams on 5th September, although parts of Ivybridge are already in receipt of it. A study by National Citizens Advice asked people they had helped with UC how hard they found it to provide proof for extra costs, like housing and childcare. Of those surveyed: • 48% found it difficult to provide evidence for health conditions • 40% found it difficult to provide evidence for housing • 35% found it difficult to provide evidence for childcare The charity also found that people receiving their first full payment late were more likely to get into greater debt. When people didn’t receive their first UC payment on time, their chances of being

THE BENEFITS OF PLANNING AHEAD Almost no one has to: • Pay Inheritance Tax • Pay for Probate on their home after death • Lose their home for any reason. There are always exceptions to the above statement, so let us take each item one at a time. Inheritance Tax In most cases, people whose estate comes into 40% inheritance tax liability have some flexible savings which can be reinvested to reduce or even remove Inheritance Tax over a period of time; although we cannot give advice regarding this, our associate independent financial advisor can, and by re-investing
into certain types of bonds and even a discounted gift trust which gives an income, very often our IFA can mitigate IHT and even annihilate it. Probate Generally speaking, when someone dies owning a property in their sole name the legal procedure of Probate has to be gone through before that property can be distributed according to a Will. Also, banks can insist on Probate being obtained before they will part with the money in the bank account of the deceased, and this usually depends on how much is in that bank account.

Your home Your home could be lost by the time you die through no fault of your own. It could of course be that you have to go into care and your home has to be sold to pay for this; or it could be that a slate falls off your roof and kills someone and there is a claim against you with no insurance to cover it. It could also be that someone makes a claim against your estate after your death, such as a
child left out of your Will or an exspouse who has not remarried. Both these classes of people can make a successful claim under the 1975 Inheritance Act. However, property in Trust is generally safe from all these things provided you have taken the Trust out for at least one of the many good reasons that benefits you, and none of these reasons constitutes deliberate deprivation of assets. What would happen if you suffered a severe stroke or suffer from dementia? People often don’t tend to realise the importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) until they see a loved one losing the ability to understand information and lose the ability to make decisions for themselves. LPA are documents that allow a person, chosen by you, to make decisions on your behalf when you are unable to do so yourself. In other words, your chosen ‘attorneys’ can assist you in handling your paperwork and decision making when you may be unable to deal with it. This can be either decisions relating to your property and financial affairs, enabling them, for example, to pay bills and collect your pension on your behalf, or alternatively, to make decisions on your health and welfare such as which care home is most suitable for you. If you do not have a LPA in place and you lose your mental capacity, someone will need to make an application to the Court of Pro-
However, if that property or that bank account is in a Trust such as a Home Protection or Asset Protection Trust, Probate does not have to be obtained, saving a lot of money and a lot of stress.
tection for a Deputyship Order. This is likely to be very costly and can take many months. In the meantime, nothing can be done in relation to your finances. I always recommend that my clients consider making a LPA. The document may never need to be used, however, if anything should happen to them, they have the peace of mind of knowing that they have chosen someone they trust to assist them, without any delay or expense. If you would like to find out more about Lasting Powers of Attorney, please contact Katherine Millman (a partner/solicitor specialising in Wills, Probate and Powers of Attorney) at Howard & Over Solicitors.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL IS (FINALLY) COMING “Making Tax Digital” has been talked about for some time now, but as usual when a huge change is rolled out, it has mutated over the consultation period and experienced delays. It would, however, appear we are now on the brink of a substantial change to how VAT returns are submitted to HMRC, so if your turnover is above the registration limit, currently £85,000, and you’re registered for VAT, then please read on. (If you are above this level and not registered for VAT, then call me now!). From April 2019, which is only a few months away, you will need to keep your records digitally. The understanding is that the current system of submitting VAT returns via the HMRC website will be no longer available. VAT returns will need to be submitted through cloud-based software, such as Quickbooks or Xero, or using some form of bridging software and spread-
sheets. I would quickly state at this point that I’m not an IT expert, but the long and short of it is that if you’re not already using software that has the function to digitally connect with HMRC then you will need to change how you do things before April 2019. We can provide access to, and training in, a variety of software including Quickbooks, Xero and FreeAgent, all slightly different in appearance, ability and price. A change may seem quite daunting, but once you are familiar with your new software, it can actually provide really useful information and speed up your record keeping. Another added advantage is that your accountant can be given access to your system, who can then simply log-in to your records and extract information for management or annual accounts without the need for you to physically take all of your invoices etc to their office, so a trip(s) saved too!

COMMUNITY RANGERS
SUNSHINE ON A RAINY DAY…
INDIVIDUAL &DISTINCTIVE
FITTED KITCHENS, BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS
It is now easier to report any problems on the near 500 miles of bridlepaths and footpaths across the Moor, as Ranger Andrea Roberts explains INNOVATIVELY DESIGNED. BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED.
Well, what a mixed bag of weather we’ve experienced this summer on Dartmoor, from scorching temperatures resulting in dry reservoirs and high fire risks to flash flooding in localised spots – there was never a dull moment. The high temperatures saw a lot of people choose to visit our wonderful South West beaches which meant we didn’t experience quite the same high volume of people as a “normal” summer on Dartmoor, but hopefully local businesses including bed and breakfast, cafes and ice cream vans still did well. As a ranger department, one of our responsibilities on Dartmoor is to look after and maintain the Public Rights of Way network. This includes nearly 500 miles of bridlepaths and footpaths across the National Park. A new computer system has just been launched within the authority to make it much easier for us to record all of our work on these paths, and for members of the public to report any problems they may come across on the paths. By visiting our main website – www.dartmoor.gov.uk – and searching for ‘report a path problem’ people can now give exact details of any problem they come across, and track the progress being made to resolve the problem. You do have to create an account and log-on to do so – it can’t be done anonymously – but this is a really quick and easy process. You can search the path/problem
31_TIM_Sep18.indd 31
via any of the following criteria: town/village; route code; parish; and grid reference. A detailed OS map will then come on the screen with the path identified on it, on which you can mark very accurately where the problem is and what it is, ie fallen tree or broken stile tread. This will then generate a report which is sent to our recreation department, who will assign it to the correct ranger for that area. This will hopefully make it easier for people to report problems directly to the correct department, rather than trying to find a correct phone number or the right person to deal with it. On the weekend of Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th September we will be running a volunteering weekend based at Shipley Bridge car park near South Brent. We aim to try and uncover/clear the vegetation around the old Napther buildings at the back of the car park. We will also be undertaking a litter pick of the area, a general tidy up and some path maintenance. We will be joined by our archaeologists who will be leading free walks for those that have volunteered looking at some of the antiquities and archaeology in the area. All tools and equipment will be provided. No need to book, it will be on between 10am-3pm each day. For any further information please email Ella Briens on ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk or Andrea Roberts on aroberts@ dartmoor.gov.uk

SEASIDE ART Children at Manor Primary welcomed Jackie Gale, the South Devon textile artist, to the school during Primary School Arts Week. Jackie presented her huge variety of artwork to the whole school before sharing her secrets with individual year groups, showing how she creates her pictures from fabric, nut shells and even old fishing nets. Inspired by her artwork, the children set about creating their own seaside-inspired textile art. At the end of the week the Year 3 and 4 children
created an exhibition of their work and invited Jackie to see their finished pictures. STORYTELLING FESTIVAL Year 1 and 2 children were invited to a storytelling festival at Buckfast Abbey as part of its millennium celebrations. The children enjoyed visiting different storytellers from all over the country, who used different props and instruments as they told their stories. The children enjoyed sharing their experience with children from other schools.

SILVER LINING FOR ALYSSA Ivybridge underwater hockey player Alyssa Oates is celebrating after returning home from the 2018 World Underwater Hockey Championships in Quebec, Canada, with a silver medal. Alyssa played centre forward for the Great Britain elite ladies team, and was picked as vice-captain for the game against Argentina. GB finished third in the group stages, losing matches to South Africa and Columbia, but that was good enough for them to progress to the knockout stage. The team found its form in the knockout rounds, winning all their matches, including a 3-0 revenge win against Columbia in the semi-final. The final against New Zealand proved to be the match of the tournament. The score was 2-2 at fulltime and 4-4 after extra time. The teams were only separated when New Zealand scored 15 minutes into golden goal time. Alyssa is taking a short break from competitive action before starting training for next year’s European Championships and World Age Group Championships.

HARRIERS SUCCESSFUL AT THE HAYTOR HELLER Athletes from Erme Valley Harriers had a fantastic turnout and many fine performances at the Haytor Heller on Dartmoor. This extremely tough race, which covers around six miles, starts below Haytor Rock and takes in many steep ascents and descents. Chris Prall (47.24) was the first Harrier home while Russ Mogridge (51.08) was 1st mv55, Emma Lake (53.08) was 1st fv40, Alison Engledew (66.00) was 1st fv55 and Sarah Hirons (55.08) was 2nd female 35. Lake was also 2nd lady. Other Harriers who completed the demanding course were Craig MacAlpine (54.56), David Engledew (66.00), Kevin Paull (62.52), Ken Summers (62.53), Katy Mogridge (68.27) Richard Lane (69.11) and Linda Bracher

(73.35). Richard Lander-Stow, meanwhile, continued his fine form to finish 15th at the Frome Half Marathon in a time of 1.31.25 on what was a very hot day. Six Harriers completed the ‘Muddy Duck’ at Plymstock, an ‘off-road’ race of around six miles. Allister Bristow, Russ and Katy Mogridge, Liz Bowden, Emma Lake and Linda Bracher all successfully completed the course. Four athletes ran the tough ‘Magnificent 7’ at Saltash. First Harrier home was Simon Swift (56th in 50.36) followed by Dave Church (106th in 54.56), Andy Newcombe (115th in 55.14) and Dave Lloyd (183rd in 61.07).
