BIRDS IN YOUR GARDEN SURVEY Due to the successful 2014-16 bird survey, and the publication of The Birds of South Brent Parish, more is probably now known about birds in South Brent than in most parishes. This winter, Brent Birders are planning another survey to take a closer look at garden birds in the parish. Anyone is welcome to participate, whether their garden is large or small, in the village or at the back of beyond – and it needn’t take up much time. For further information, email brentbirdsurvey@gmail.com i http://brentbirdsurvey.co.uk

Ivybridge Childminders were invited to the library for an ‘Alfie’ morning. Twenty children, aged 1-4 years, and their childminders, went along to listen to Alfie goes to Nursery school, and then they did some craft work linked to the story. The children then enjoyed another Alfie story followed by singing and using the instru-
ments linked to the second story. The children came away with some more ‘Alfie’ crafts to complete with their childminders or to take home and complete with their families. The childminders would like to say ‘thank you’ to Sarah and Sue at the library for organising and hosting the children.

ENERGY ADVICE SERVICE OPEN The Energy Advice Team from South Dartmoor Community Energy (SDCE) is gearing up for a busy winter helping local residents to reduce their fuel bills and stay warm and well in their homes. The team has organised a series of drop-in sessions across the South Hams, including in Ivybridge Library and The Old School Centre in South Brent. All the advice is free and impartial and includes help to check you’re on the best energy tariff and support with applications for home energy grants and schemes. Residents should bring a recent fuel bill to the sessions to get the best advice or call 0800 112 3044 for more information. Last winter, SDCE provided advice and information to over 1,800 people in the South Hams.
To keep up with demand, SDCE is delighted to welcome new energy advisor Jinni King to the team. Jinni is passionate about home energy issues and has recently completed her energy advisor training. SDCE has also been chosen as one of the organisations up for the public vote in local Tesco stores during November and December. The Tesco Bags of Help scheme could see SDCE win up to £4,000 to keep the advice service going and the team hope residents will support them. i To find out more about where the
advisors are going to be, or to invite them to your group or event, visit southdartmoorcommunityenergy. org email info@southdartmoor communityenergy.org or call Freephone 0800 112 3044

LABOUR LISTENING WARM AND WELL SOUTH BRENT Local members of South Hams Labour Party have been in Ivybridge asking people for their ideas for improvements in the town. Issues raised included restoring the children’s centre, making better use of open spaces and a direct bus service between Ivybridge and Derriford. The ideas generated will be fed into a manifesto working group to plan for the May 2019 South Hams District Council elections. Pictured (l-r) are Tessa Lannin, Tony Rea, Ben Davey, Carol Beeson and Ian Karkeek.

A new project to help residents in South Brent and the surrounding area reduce their fuel bills and stay warm and well in their homes this winter has been launched. ‘Warm and Well South Brent’ offers free and impartial advice on reducing fuel bills and also has some grant funding towards insulation and heating improvements for certain households. Energy advisors from South Dartmoor Community Energy will have a help-desk in the Old School
Community Centre on Wednesdays 14th November and 12th December between 9.30am-12.30pm. If you’d like some advice, pop along with a recent fuel bill or call the team on 0800 112 3044. The team will also attend local coffee mornings, organise a popup advice centre in the village and can conduct home visits to housebound residents. i For help or advice call 0800 112 3044 (free) or email sophie@south dartmoorcommunityenergy.org

News of extreme gallantry also reached south Devon. In late July, Private Theodore Veale from Dartmouth, who was serving with the 8th Devons, risked his own life on a number of occasions as he went out into ‘No Man’s Land’ trying to rescue one of his officers, Lieutenant Eric Savill. Eventually, Veale was successful in bringing the badly wounded officer safely back (a full account of this appears in my book South Devon in the Great War). For these actions Veale was promoted to corporal and awarded the Victoria Cross; one of only two VCs awarded to the Devonshire Regiment during the whole war. No doubt news of his gallantry helped to

Sibley wrote a monologue with songs called Little Blue Dress, which along with an actor and singers, was performed at a successful evening at Lukesland House. Martin would like to put the show on again, and is looking for two singers, one male and one female, aged from early 20s to early 30s. You must be able to sing across a range of styles (eg 1930s musical, blues, pop, soul etc). It will be an amateur production which Martin hopes to be putting on in the autumn. battle. Was Veale from C Company and, if so, does this help explain his immediate willingness to try to rescue Savill? I would like to think so, but so far no evidence has been found to support this idea. After the war, Theodore Veale became a fireman in Dartmouth – local people say he was always first up the ladder! Eric Savill graduated from Cambridge University, became a surveyor and eventually took the post of Deputy Ranger of the parks at Royal Windsor. He was knighted in 1955. Both men died in 1980 and the Veale-Savill garden in Dartmouth was opened in 2002. Next month, I shall write about some of the Ivybridge soldiers and their role in this battle.

The list contained far more names than one would expect due to the inclusion of men who no longer lived in the village. As early as January 1919, a public meeting was held to discuss the issue of a permanent memorial for all those who had lost their lives during the war. Other suggestions to commemorate the fallen included an arch with a central clock, a public library and public hall (which was strongly supported), alms-houses for the poor, and even a cottage hospital. Three and a half years later on Sunday 24th September 1922, Francis Bingham Mildmay, Lord Mildmay of Flete and Conservative Member of Parliament for Totnes, presided over a special unveiling ceremony of the war memorial in front of a very large crowd which had gathered to witness the occasion. POPPY FESTIVAL
Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen
More than 15 poppy arrangements will be on display at a special Poppy Festival in St Petroc’s Parish Church, South Brent, to mark the centenary of the Armistice which brought the Great War to an end. Themes include personal memories of the families of some of those who served in the war, flags of the Allies, a diorama of the trenches, War and Peace, and banners depicting the events of the war, year by year, sewn by the embroidery group. Children from Messy Church have been busy making ceramic poppies for a special display, while another will highlight the men and women from South Brent who made the ultimate sacrifice. The Poppy Festival is on from Wednesday, 7th, to Wednesday, 14th November, between 10am and 4pm. Light refreshments will be served in the church between 12 noon and 3.30pm on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Proceeds to the Royal British Legion.

RAMBERT RETURNS Britain’s leading contemporary dance company returns to the Theatre Royal Plymouth this month with its first full-length narrative dance work in almost 40 years. Choreographed by two-time Olivier Award-winner Kim Brandstrup in collaboration with legendary filmmakers the Quay Brothers, Rambert’s Life is a Dream is a two-act, modern reimagining of the 17th-century play by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. The production is set in a run-down rehearsal room, where a director is drifting off to sleep. Life is a Dream features sets and projections by legendary filmmakers the Quay Brothers, who will transform the space into a dreamlike world where illusion and reality collide. seems increasingly indifferent to true genius of any kind, let alone Evans’. Endlessly distracted by the trivial, we allow the classical tools of grammar, logic and rhetoric to lie unregarded in the shed of consciousness, rusting to a picturesque hue that would actually look really great on Instagram. But which filter? Hmmm... Simon returns to The Watermark on 17th November, tickets £14/£12.
@ The Watermark WHERE IS MRS CHRISTIE?
Agatha Christie was one of the greatest thriller writers of all time and certainly the most prolific. In 1926, she was at the centre of a mystery as perplexing as any of her fiction, a series of events which sparked one of the biggest and most extensive police hunts in history. Her crashed car was discovered in Surrey and the famous author was missing, presumed dead by many, for 11 days. However, she was eventually found at a luxury hotel in Harrogate. She claimed then, and for the rest of the life, that she was suffering from amnesia and remembered nothing. Neither the press nor the police believed her. On Saturday, 3rd November, actor Liz Grand presents her new one-woman show Where Is Mrs Christie? Did Agatha Christie lie, and if so why? Did she suffer from amnesia? Was it a publicity stunt? Or was there a darker secret involved in this disappearance which was to affect her for the rest of her life? The answer to all these questions will, as in all good thrillers, be revealed!
THE GENIUS RETURNS – SIMON EVANS Ever since he was a small boy, all Evans really wanted was to be recognised by the world as a man of genius. He has, until now, remained thwarted. The world
THE NEW JERSEY BOYS
Back at The Watermark by overwhelming public demand on Saturday, 24th November, The New Jersey Boys return with their highly-acclaimed show featuring the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, plus a tribute to another great rock and roll band Showaddywaddy. The packed two-set programme, featuring the amazing falsetto voice of Einar Vestman and the humour of allround entertainer Gary Gould, is continuing to have an amazing run of sell-out shows across the country. This year there will also be tributes to Freddie Mercury and Elton John. With such a packed programme is it any wonder that ticket sales are high, therefore early booking is recommended.
CHRISTMAS GIFT FAIR The Watermark Christmas Gift Fair is on Saturday, 8th December, 10am-1pm. Entry is free and everyone is welcome to this friendly and festive fair. There will be fantastic Christmas gifts and handmade crafts from a wide range of vendors and local craftspeople.

This informative guide is perfectly partnered by the new website for the town supported by Ivybridge Town Council – ivybridge-devon.co.uk If you have friends or family coming to stay over the Christmas holidays, or if you would like to entice them to come and visit, the town guide is full of useful, up-todate information, including places to stay, where to eat, drink and be merry and suggestions for things to do in the area.
There are a number of reasons why ingrown toenails happen: poor nail cutting, nail curved round at the sides, nail too wide for the toe. Fixing them does not always involve surgery. Many times, spikes of nail can be removed from the edge, giving instant relief from pain, then the nail needs to grow the nail beyond the end of the flesh, so it can’t cut in. There are several techniques to assist with this. Sometimes the nail is so curved that it pinches the skin underneath, or the nail is too wide for the toe, in which case a minor operation to remove the sides will give a permanent solution to the problem. This would be done under local anaesthetic. A chemical called Phenol is used to prevent the portion of nail removed from re-growing. Please don’t suffer in silence. Life is so much more fun if you are not in pain. Please contact us for an appointment.

THE CORNWOOD OF YESTERYEAR Cornwood is the focus of our pictorial feature this month, and these scenes have been selected from our image bank. They show the buildings and landscapes of the village, but also capture some of the social occasions that surround them, such as the village show and the local hunt, as well as local characters from a bygone era. If you have any information about the places or people depicted in the images, please do get in touch. Do you have images you would like to share? You do not have to part with your pictures to add them to the DRA Image Bank, we will scan them so you can retain the originals. If you are interested in studying the history of your house, village or town, then visit us at the DRA on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday between 11am and 3pm. every child is different, that’s why our nurseries are different... Little Orchard Montessori Nurseries aim to provide a caring, friendly environment where your child is encouraged to follow their own interests, learn at their own pace and have fun whilst doing so. We use the highly-acclaimed Montessori Method to ensure we bring out the very best in every child. Our nurseries are small enough to enable us to deliver a personal and individual approach to your child’s development, but big enough to allow your child to engage with others and learn important social skills. Our nurseries have a variety of outdoor spaces and are in great locations, enabling us to take the children on walks, trips and visits.

ST LUKE’S Five Year 6 girls from Woodlands Park (above) organised their own fundraising event for St Luke’s Hospice. They baked their own delicious cakes, flapjacks, brownies and cookies to sell, along with some crafty items such as loom bands, pompom animals, book marks and painted rocks. The girls were very pleased to raise £170.56. St Luke’s came to the school’s celebration assembly to thank them personally for supporting the charity by organising this event.

FARDEL VISIT Children from Cornwood School were welcomed to Fardel (above) by Father Benedict who showed them around his Russian Orthodox Chapel. It was full of interesting artefacts that the pupils were allowed to hold and look at while he explained their history. He also explained some
of the traditions and compared them with the Church of England. Afterwards he conducted a tour of the lovely gardens. At the school, the children are split into houses named after the big houses around Cornwood – Blachford, Slade, Delamore and Fardel – so this visit was an opportunity for the children in Fardel to see the house they are named after.

IMPROVEMENT The sun shone for the Friends of Manor Primary who gathered recently for a day of outdoor improvement work. Almost 30 parents and lots of children carried out a range of jobs, including painting, gardening and general tidying up, as well as preparing
the ground for a new all-weather play zone. With a break in the middle of the day for hot dogs and bacon sandwiches, it was a lovely, and very productive, occasion for the school community. Fundraising will now focus on providing play equipment, shelters and benches for this area.
v Sparkwell

BAKE OFF A busy first half of term has flown past. A Poppy Day ‘bake off’ raised money for the Poppy Day Appeal – one of the winning cakes is pictured above. The church in Sparkwell was full for Harvest Festival, with a large number of donations for the Shekinah Mission, and the school also held a mufti day in aid of the Indonesian disaster appeal. Links with the local Little Orchard Nursery continue to grow, with their older children joining our Foundation Stage children for a weekly forest school session. There was also a day of drumming and children are enjoying dance lessons with Miss Kee from Ivybridge CC.

Do you have only one customer? This may not apply to many people, I understand, but if this is you, then changes are coming that will impact the amount of money in your pocket. For several years now we’ve had a bit of legislation with the very catchy name of IR35. This applies to you if you work through your own limited company, but you only work for one person. This started as quite a small piece of legislation only targeting certain sectors. It then extended it’s net to include public sector workers and, from April 2019, it will more than likely be applied to the private sector, too. But what does this actually mean for you? As a company you enjoy certain tax breaks, paying tax at a lower rate and no National Insurance contributions (NIC), to name a couple. Well, if IR35 applies to you, then your company is

assessed for tax and NIC as if it were a person, so immediately there will be an additional NIC cost. There will be literally no tax advantage of having a company. You will still have the limited liability a company gives you, but my advice to people in this situation is to consider carefully if the company route still remains the best option. Who is likely to be effected? If you are, say, an IFA working through your company for one firm, or a building sub-contractor doing the same, or an IT service provider, really anyone who operates through a company. While it is yet to be confirmed this will be applied to the private sector from April 2019, I think we will find many people are effected by this. There have already been some high-profile cases in the public sector not ending well for the tax payer, BBC presenter Christa Ackroyd being one.

The first Westward League cross country fixture was held on a very sunny day and a dry course at Central Park, Plymouth, with a good turnout of athletes from Erme Valley Harriers. There was a particularly impressive turnout from the youngsters. There were some good age group results with April Oakshott finishing 2nd U17 women, Emma Lake was 2nd fv40, Linda McFadzen 2nd fv50 and Alison Engledew 1st fv60. David Engledew was 2nd mv55 and Ken Summers 2nd mv65. Earlier in the day, several athletes had completed the Plymouth 10K with Chris Prall the first Harrier home in 30th place in a time of 38.12. Ray Male, Mark Livermore, Rebecca Lee and David Lloyd were all close together. Liz Cane, Emily Faircloth, Ruth Terry, Clare Smith, Sharon Terry and Tamsyn Dingley all did well. Liam Hallows ran in the 5K and finished 3rd. Mike Hoskin wasted no time in moving on from completing his 100th marathon – a week later he took on the tough ‘Crafty Fox’ marathon, which is hilly and mainly ‘off road’ in Dorset. Hoskin was 27th in a time of 5.11.50. The re-arranged 6 Moor Miles race finally took place after it was cancelled in July due to high wind and rain. The numbers were down, with only 255 finishers. Alison Engledew and Kay Mogridge had particularly good runs, with Engledew 1st fv60 and Mogridge 1st fv55.
15/12/2017 20:27:56
Meanwhile, at the Plymouth Coasters, Cleo Perry had a good run and was 1st lady in 31.44 and 6th overall. Perry also did well at the Newton Abbot Ladies 10K, winning the race in a time of 39.37 and breaking her own fv45 club age record, which she only recently set in Cardiff. Alison Engledew has also been running well and was 2nd fv60 in 48.28. Perry returned to Cardiff and continued her fantastic form to finish 3rd in the fv45 category in the half marathon in a time of 1.24.14. This was a personal best time and broke her own club age record. Craig MacLellan finished the race in a time of 1.28.21, while Martin Perry achieved a personal best time of 2.02.48. Ian Crossley was the Harriers only representative in the Burnham Half Marathon coming home 125th in 1.48.01. Andrew Reed was 14th in the Saffron Fast Five in 31.24, while Andy Trigg represented the England Master Team in the Chester Marathon and finished 266th in 3.03.20.
