ELECTRIC BLUE AT THE ZOO
Two critically-endangered geckos of a breed facing extremely high risk of extinction have successfully hatched in what’s being called a ‘real achievement’ for Dartmoor Zoo. The electric blue day geckos, described by their keepers as ‘little gems’, are found in the wild only in a 3.1 square mile area of the Kimboza Forest in Tanzania where they are threatened by illegal collection for the international pet trade. Dartmoor Zoo is helping to conserve them as part of an interna-
tional captive breeding program. Senior keeper of reptiles Justin Aird said: “We have been working on perfecting our husbandry techniques with this species and these hatchlings are an excellent reward for our hard work and dedication.” The zoo’s two youngsters are minute and require small food such as micro crickets and springtails along with a special recipe of liquified fruits. They are easily stressed, so are residing in a special reptile breeding room while they mature.

Over 500 yarn angels knitted by members of Ivybridge Methodist Church were placed across the town in the lead up to Christmas in an effort to share God’s love across the community and to bring a reminder of the reason for Christmas. Nicky Rowe, the co-ordinator of the scheme for the church, said: “As a church we simply wanted to bless the community we live in, and bring a touch of seasonal joy into the lives of people across the town.” If you found an angel, you are invited to share your views and where you found it at www. facbook.com/ivybridgemethodist
If you are suffering with issues around mental health, or know a friend or family member who is, a new group starting in Ivybridge is offering its support. Ivybridge Salvation Army’s Women’s Mental Health Support Group is being launched because the church feels strongly that it should support anyone within Ivybridge with this need. The group is not offering professional mental health advice, instead the aim of the group is to provide a safe space for people to come and talk and share how they are feeling; a place for friendship, for the forming of connections and where people can talk freely without fear of any judgements being made about them.
The club has funded the provision of defibrillators and has also promoted the Message in a Bottle Scheme for the safe storage of medical information. Recently, a number of club members helped with Plastic Free Ivybridge’s river clean. Club president Lion John Martin said: “We are delighted that the council have selected our club for the award because it provides some recognition for the many hours of voluntary work put in by our members to help serve the people of Ivybridge and surrounding communities.”
Each session will offer an opportunity to talk and share experiences as a group as a means of mutual support. The sessions will be relaxed and informal, with no pressure to share anything until you feel ready to. There will be activities, video clips and occasional guest speakers that will prompt discussion around all aspects of mental health. Min and Liz will lead the group, which will meet for the first time on Wednesday, 23rd January, between 7-9pm in the town hall and thereafter every third Wednesday; subsequent dates are 13th February and 6th and 27th March. There is no charge and coffee/ tea and cake will be provided! So, if you are suffering from any issues regarding mental health, or if you know someone who is, you are invited to come along in January.

SUPERMARKET PLAN PARKED BY COUNCIL Discussions about plans to build a new “budget” supermarket on a car park in the heart of Ivybridge have been deferred by district councillors after concerns were raised about its impact on parking in the town. South Hams council was due to approve the concept of moving forward with discussions for a new store to be built on the site of the Leonard’s Road car park, land owned by the council, at a meeting in December. But the decision was put off until the next executive meeting to allow further discussions on parking in the town, with the fear building on the car park would only add to existing problems. No operator for the budget supermarket has officially been named, but councillors in the meeting said that they would welcome an “Aldi”, before quickly correcting themselves and mentioning other chains. The report to the executive said that there were no other sites in
04-05_TIM_Jan19.indd 5
the centre of Ivybridge suitable for such development and if an out-of-town development came forward, it would likely have a negative impact on central Ivybridge footfall and commerce. The meeting heard that a new store would create 30-35 new jobs and generate around 1,000 trips a day into the centre of Ivybridge. Ivybridge district councillor Michael Saltern said that if a supermarket was built on the car park site, no-one would be able to use it. He said: “We are talking about increasing footfall, but they would literally have to be on foot, as there would be nowhere close for them to park. “The proposal will require a change in car parking strategy at the site, as both the store and the leisure centre will require sufficient parking for their needs.” The executive agreed to defer any decision until its February meeting to allow further discussions on car parking provision in the town.
Three local good causes are celebrating after being awarded more than £7,000 by the Co-op’s Local Community Fund. They were chosen to be the causes supported by Ivybridge Co-op – Glanvilles Mill Co-op, Abbots Court Co-op and Ivybridge Coop Funeralcare – to raise funds and awareness from late 2017 to November 2018. Stowford School’s Thrive Programme, Ivybridge Bowls Club and Friends and Families of Special Children each received money raised when customers bought Co-op own-brand products in store plus money from charging for carrier bags. Stowford headteacher Mrs Williams said: “Our Thrive Programme is so important as it
CAN YOU HELP GIVE SOME TLC? Ivybridge Library is launching Tea, Laughter and Company (TLC) sessions this month to reach out to people in the area who are isolated and lonely and do not always have family or friends available for a chat, or who are simply new to the area. The first TLC get-together is in the afternoon on Monday, 21st January, with Adam Hart-Davis bringing his wit and wisdom to the gathering. There will be a free cuppa and some cheery company. supports children with different emotional needs and children who may be having a hard time. This will support our children in a fantastic way”. Friends and Families of Special Children, which supports families who have children with disabilities and additional needs received £7,594.37 which will enable it to continue to put on lots of fun and interactive activities for the families it helps. Hannah Whiting, lead fundraiser for the charity, said: “We are so grateful for the incredible amount raised by the Ivybridge Co-ops for local causes.” A new round of the scheme is now live and collecting for Moorvision and Ivybridge Youth for Christ Bridge Project. To enable it to give TLC a go in Ivybridge, the library is asking for some help. Are you able to sponsor one of the monthly sessions by either donating refreshments or making a donation towards the cost? Could you or someone you know come along and talk to the group or share a skill? If you can help, contact the library on 01752 89140 and ask for Trudy or Lynn.

features ARE YOU A BUDDING HOUSE DETECTIVE?
Title deeds can reveal a huge amount about the building and its past inhabitants

re you looking for something new to do in 2019? Well, how about becoming a house detective with the Devon Rural Archive? Have you ever wondered about the history of your home: its age; how it was built; and who might have lived there? Whether you live in a Tudor cottage or a modern block of flats, there is no better place to begin your research than the Devon Rural Archive, so pop in and begin unlocking the secrets of your home. In the meantime, these handy hints will help you kick-start your project. 1. Create a timeline of the history you know Record the information you already know about the history of your house. This may have been passed down from generation to generation, or perhaps mentioned by previous owners or occupiers. This information will give you a good basis for furthering your research in the DRA library. 2. Check your deeds You may have, or be able to access, the Title deeds. This bundle of documents could tell you when the building was constructed, by and for whom, it may reveal the original layout, and even provide details of changes to the structure and tenancy. After 1840, maps were often included too. The DRA has a growing col-

lection of historic documents relating to the ownership of land in Devon, as well as a glossary of the legal terminology they contain. 3. Chat with neighbours If you are new to the house, or area, then ask local people what they know about the property and its past inhabitants. The results will be unlike the written record, and will bring a very different dimension to your project. In some cases, your neighbours may even be able to provide you with old photographs of your house. Whether inside or outside they will show your home at different stages of its life. You can also try searching the DRA Image Bank for photos too. 4. Trace past inhabitants Use the Census Returns, Parish Registers and Directories here at the DRA to create a timeline of people connected with your home. Through this you may be able to identify who was responsible for creating, or altering, parts of the building, at different times. 5. Study the structure The house and its outbuildings will hold many clues to help you understand the history of your home. Make a note of the layout, the building materials, fixtures and fittings and how they relate to one another. Are there any visible scars in the masonry where changes may have occurred? Do the fittings and fixtures match?
STOWFORD MILL’S STAMP OF APPROVAL In April 1964, the General Post Office issued a set of stamps commemorating the quatercentenary of William Shakespeare’s birth. It comprised of a set of five denominations depicting scenes from some of his famous plays. Postage stamp paper at that time incorporated small watermarks of the royal cypher and had been manufactured at Stowford Mill in Ivybridge for decades. For this special issue, enough paper to provide a print run of
166.5 million assorted stamps was requested. However, so great was the demand for these stamps by philatelists and Bardolaters, that the GPO had to make a special request to the paper mill to provide another batch of base paper at very short notice. With its reputation for flexibility, Stowford Mill duly obliged, enabling a further 17.2 million stamps to be printed. The Post Office was extremely grateful as the potential disrup-

The three main purposes for using historic maps are: • To provide a basic outline of the structure at different stages of its history. • To reveal how your property has developed over a period of time. • To identify the relationship be-

tion to the supply chain was avoided. The popularity of the Shakespeare stamps had caught everyone by surprise. The high value 2s 6d variant, normally attracting only very limited sales, sold more than eight million on this occasion. Apart from the demand for stamp paper, the mill was also requested to manufacture an order of Airmail paper for a special issue of commemorative Shakespeare-illustrated Air Letters. Regular orders for stamp base and associated paper products provided valuable business for Stowford Mill, so much so that a full-time security officer was employed on site to ensure every piece of watermarked stamp paper was accounted for. This included all the paper rejected for quality reasons which was
subsequently re-pulped, an effective method of destruction. Sadly, only four years later, the whole stamp business was to disappear overnight. The issue of stamps depicting British paintings in 1968 was the first to be printed on unwatermarked paper. With this step change from the Post Office came the decision to move production of what was now more of a commodity grade to another, larger, mill within the Wiggins Teape Group, the owners of Stowford Mill. More information regarding the manufacture of stamp paper at Stowford Paper Mill, along with many other interesting topics can be viewed on the Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group website:

Against a beautiful Christmas Story backdrop depicting a stable, stars and a twinkly tree, the children sang traditional and well-known carols including ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘Little Donkey’ accompanied by a small percussion band.

All the children had parts, some speaking, and they all looked the part in shepherd, wise men, camel and sheep costumes. A really exciting part of the performance was the arrival of two donkeys from the Donkey Sanctuary. Assistant head Mrs Ocean said “It was a lovely experience for our younger children especially with the treat of having the donkeys as our special guests!”
ABBEY VISIT Class 1 at Cornwood Primary School started their Christmas preparations with a day out at Buckfast Abbey for a Nativity day. They listened to

Ms Kee, Stowford PE teacher and Ivybridge Learning Community outreach P.E teacher, said: “I am immensely proud of the children and what they have achieved. “There will be lots more events next term which we are looking forward to.”

FAIRYTALE FOR SOUTH BRENT South Brent Amateur Dramatic Society presents its pantomime ‘The Firebird’, specially adapted from the Russian fairytale and written by two SBADS’ members, this month. ‘The Firebird’ marks a bold departure from traditional panto fare. The story has been adapted for the village, from the traditional Russian fairy tale, and written by South Brent Amateur Dramatic Society members chairman Tim McGill and Rob Kidney. The result is a show which is full of Kings and Queens and Princes, a Princess, of course, fairies, a wolf, maybe a giant or two,
plus creatures of the woodland, singing and dancing trees, a horse or two and at least one Firebird. ‘The Firebird’ runs in South Brent Village Hall from Wednesday 16th to Saturday 19th January, at 7.30pm each evening, with a matinee performance on the Saturday starting at 2.30pm. Tickets, priced £8 for adults and £5 for under 16s, go on sale from 7th January and are available at the Mare and Foal charity shop in the village between 10am and 12.30pm, online at SBADS’ website – http://sbads.show – or by telephoning 07812 414916.

This is a strippedback, one-man show that’s infused with wit, warmth and alchemy, beautifully illustrated by his

■ RICHARDSONS LEGAL SERVICES
SPECIAL OFFER TIME By Monica Salvioni Reeder – Operations & Client Services at Richardsons Legal Services The beginning of the year is the right moment to put all our affairs in order. Shall we start by making a Will? You would be surprised to hear how many people still haven’t got a Will in England. Round about 60%! Amazing... and quite worrying. To help those people come to the decision to make a Will, and to avoid them going either online or to the nearest supermarket to buy a ready-made one, Richardsons is offering a Will for £98 including VAT during January 2019. People should make a Will and there are compelling reasons why they should do so through a Will writer: • A Will needs to be drafted by a specialist. I had a case of a lady who was very ill. Her granddaughter downloaded a
Will online, filled it out and it was signed the day before she died. It was deemed that the Will was made and signed under undue influence and therefore it wasn’t considered valid. This probably led to her estate being distributed according to intestacy rules and not necessarily the way that lady would have liked; • A Will writer takes many aspects into consideration while taking your instructions: first and foremost, has the Testator got mental capacity? Is the Testator under undue influence? What is in the estate? Are there any third parties that could make a claim under the Inheritance Act 1975 (ex-spouses who haven’t remarried and excluded disgruntled children being the most common examples)? Would it be advisa-
ble to create a Home Protection Trust to protect those assets as well as a Will? Is there an Inheritance Tax liability that could be mitigated? Has the Testator got children for whom guardians need to be appointed? These are examples of the questions a Will writer would ask before starting to draft a Will; • A Will must be executed properly to be valid: the Testator must sign it and date it front of two witnesses, who must sign it in front of all parties. There are rules as to who the witnesses can be: for instance, a witness must be over 18 and must not be a beneficiary or married to a beneficiary. A wrong execution might invalid the whole of your Will. A Will writer will be present when you sign your Will and be one of your witnesses. Therefore, you don’t need just ANY Will. You need a Will that is both properly drafted and executed, which will give you peace of mind. By talking to you, a Will writer can find the best solution and give you that peace of mind.
Give yourself the gift of happiness in 2019 says Tiffany Armitage Research shows that: • 50% of happiness is determined by your genes. • 10% of happiness is determined by the circumstances in which you live. • 40% of happiness is determined by your actions, your attitude or optimism, and the way you handle situations. It really is not the things that happen to us, how much money we earn, or our work status that creates the feelings of happiness and wellbeing in our lives. I think this is great news,

LEAVE A LEGACY OF YOUR CHOOSING We place so much importance on our family’s wishes over Christmas, yet over half of UK adults do not have a Will. Making a Will could not be easier. It starts with a friendly conversation about who you want to be involved. You choose your Executors (the people who will deal with your Estate) and you choose your Beneficiaries and what they will receive through your Will. It is as simple as that. Wills are not just for the wealthy. Having a Will makes it much easier for your family to manage your assets when you pass away and you may be surprised by how much you have to give. They aren’t just for the elderly, either. No one can predict the future, though many try. And despite our hopes and best wishes, no one can guarantee the future either. While your Will is just for the end of your life, we can never be certain of when exactly that will be.
Without a Will, Intestacy laws in England and Wales dictate who receives a share of the Estate and these laws may not divide your belongings the way you would like. As an extreme example, a man owns his house in his sole name. He lives with his partner and his step-children but they never marry and he doesn’t make a Will. Under UK Intestacy laws, his partner and the step-children would not be entitled to inherit anything and wouldn’t be allowed to remain in his property without obtaining a beneficial interest through the courts. If he had no surviving blood relatives, his entire Estate would be inherited by the Crown. However, if the man had made a Will, he can ensure his partner will receive his property and his step-children will receive specific gifts he wants them to have. In situations that are much less

it means we can work with the 40% within the life we already have to be calm and content. extreme, a Will still ensures you have control over who receives what. It prevents a difficult situation from becoming more difficult and stops family members arguing over your belongings. When a loved one passes away, it is normal to feel overwhelmed and confused. We provide you with a copy of your signed Will in an envelope with our details on it. This means your family has a starting point, a friendly voice on the end of the phone who can advise them on the next steps. Wills can also be used to reduce Inheritance Tax liabilities, protect your home if you need to go into a care home and appoint guardians for your children. They are an invaluable document that your family will be grateful you made. When making your Will, we advise you use a solicitor. We provide a quality, friendly service and we are certain our fees are competitive. So why not make it your New Year’s resolution to ensure your legacy is the one you wish to leave behind, not one dictated by law. Please contact Howard & Over Solicitors on 01752 690123 for a chat about your options.

RENT-TO-OWN CAP VICTORY FOR STRUGGLING FAMILIES
By Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry It’s winter now and most of you will have your feet in enclosed shoes. That creates a warm moist environment which the athlete’s foot fungus loves. It is important to wash and dry well between your toes so that the fungus can’t get established. Most people have got the fungus on their skin at a subclinical level, but it is when it proliferates that it causes a problem. If it is not treated promptly it will eventually infect the nails. Once in the nails it is much more difficult to treat. The nails become discoloured with orange or cream streaks and they thicken and crumble. They can be successfully treated, but it is usually a long process. Please don’t delay treating them, because the more advanced the infection, the more difficult it is to treat. There is also another type of fungus that lives on the nails. It looks white and powdery and can be caused by nail polish trapping the fungal spores between the nail and the polish. Dr’s Remedy nail polish, which is available at Abbey Road Podiatry, has an antifungal agent in it. It is also free from any damaging chemicals, so it won’t harm your nails. If you have a problem with your feet or nails, why not book an appointment with Jackie Thomas at Abbey Road Podiatry to get them treated. i Call 01752 426075 or visit

Thirty-six members and 19 visitors were joined by VIP guests, president of Devon and Cornwall Area National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies, Gill Casey, past president of the club, and a founder member, Maureen Blair. A beautiful green and white iced celebration cake, made by treasurer, Janet Weston was cut prior to the start of the flower demonstration. ‘A Christmas Wish’ was the title for national demonstrator Lorena Dyer’s evening. She produced 11 exquisite designs using a wide range of flowers, colours and foliage with some Christmas ‘sparkle’ in unusual containers, finishing with an ‘emerald’ arrangement. She also entertained us with her humorous stories throughout her demonstration. Lucky raffle winners were able to take her designs to enjoy at home. The evening culminated with a

Athletes of Erme Valley Harriers have spent most of their time in recent weeks running mainly ‘off road’. The Harriers had a good turnout of athletes in the Westward League cross country races at Newquay and Exeter. It was fine and dry at Newquay while at Exeter, which incorporated the Devon County Championships, the conditions were muddy. At Exeter, the ladies did well taking the silver medal in both the ladies and vet ladies categories. They also took five category medals with Jaine Swift taking gold. Twelve senior men took part, achieving one silver and two bronze medals in age categories. In the juniors, April Oakshott had another good run in a high quality U17 women’s field, as did Bella May in the U13 girls. Seven athletes took part in the tough but scenic Drogo 10. Ken
Summers again did well in his age category and was 1st mv65. First Harrier home was David Engledew. Other Harriers who completed the race were Alison Engledew, Dave Church, Craig MacAlpine, Kate Medlicott and Richard Lander Stow. In the Lopwell Loop, a new hill race over a 12km course near Tamerton, six athletes represented the club, with Dan Marks first Harrier home. Other Harriers were Mark Livermore, Richard Lane, Dave Lloyd, Rose Bralsford and Lindsay Lane. A small contingent of Harriers tackled the tough Bicton Blister, with Mike Hoskin leading the group, which also included Dan Marks and Lindsay and Richard Lane. Meanwhile, Russ and Katy Mogridge ran in the Tamar Trails Tavistock. This is a five-anda-half mile woodland race that lived up to its name!
