DEVON RURAL ARCHIVE

In September’s edition of the imag we introduced you to the DRA’s Image Bank, which contains many thousands of pictures of Devon’s buildings and landscapes, and provides an invaluable visual resource for people studying the changes in their local area. Over the coming months, we want

to share with you some snapshots of the towns and villages covered by the magazine. To start this new feature we have chosen these picture postcards of Ivybridge. How do these compare to the Ivybridge of today? Do you have images you would like to share? Remember, you do

not have to part with your pictures to add them to the DRA Image Bank, we will scan them into our system so you can retain the originals. If you are interested in studying the history of your house, village or town, then visit us at the DRA on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday between 11am and 3pm.

VOLUNTEERS CLEAR RIVER RUBBISH

IVYBRIDGE REMEMBERS A week of commemorative community events takes place this month to commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great War. Organised by Ivybridge Community Arts, local people are encouraged to join in and honour those who took part a hundred years ago. Events include a wartime tea party, guided historical walking tour of the town, music hall entertainment and the performance of a specially-written play set in wartime Ivybridge. i See page 14 for full details

Ten bags of rubbish, along with numerous other items including mobile phones, motorcycle parts, a wooden pallet and two 15m sections of piping, were fished out of the River Erme during a river clean. Over 30 volunteers were able to take advantage of the low water levels for the clean, and access the far bank and recover rubbish which was previously inaccessible. The river clean was organised by Plastic Free Ivybridge (PFI) and Ivybridge Environmental Action Group, who were pleased to report that less rubbish was recovered this year compared with the last clean, a trend they hope will continue.

RECEPTIONIST WANTED Citizens Advice South Hams is looking for a volunteer receptionist to help at its office in the Watermark Centre. If you are a friendly, confident person who enjoys helping others and is available on Monday mornings, they’d like to hear from you. The reception role is key to making sure clients get the help they need. i To find out more email reception@ southhamscab.org.uk

RBL CROWDFUNDING APPEAL Ivybridge Royal British Legion is calling on the local community to be part of something special for Remembrance 2018. They have launched a crowdfunding appeal to raise money for a big screen to show this year’s Remembrance Sunday service, which marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, on a big screen in The Watermark car park. On this important anniversary, Ivybridge RBL wants to ensure that

all who wish to participate can do so. The branch is conscious that as the parade has grown over the years many people have found it increasingly difficult to see, hear and take part.

Therefore, they are calling on local people’s support so that everyone can enjoy the parade in an open and comfortable setting, where they can watch, listen, and see veterans, service personnel, cadets, Scouts, Guides and school children march with pride and lay wreaths at the Memorial and say ‘Thank you’ a hundred years on. i To support the RBL appeal go to

MAYOR EXTENDS CHRISTMAS DAY LUNCH INVITATION The elderly and those living on their own who maybe dreading a lonely Christmas are invited to a special Christmas lunch at The Watermark. The town council’s Christmas Day party, now in its 9th year, includes delicious food, fun and friendship. “It’s my pleasure to once again extend the town council’s warm invitation to those who are elderly and/or alone to spend

their Christmas Day with us at The Watermark,” says Ivybridge mayor, Cllr Anthony Khong. “If you are hesitant about attending, please don’t worry – we can accommodate your transport requirements and any other support you might need. “If you, or someone you know, is dreading the thought of a solo Christmas Day then please do get in touch – to book a place contact the town hall on 01752 893815.

Sue Aust of Ivybridge Caring will also be happy to take names. “And of course we will again need the help of the wonderful community here in Ivybridge to ensure this year’s event continues to be as good as previous years. We absolutely depend on all our generous benefactors to make this event a success. “Do join us on Christmas Day this year and be amongst Ivybridge friends.”

REHOME A BOOK

The ivybridge-heritage.org website is receiving increasing numbers of enquiries about ancestors from the town, with people from Australia, Canada and America as well as in the UK contacting the group. One such contact was from a Mr Ford from Argentina and his daughter. Four sons of the Ford family had emigrated to Argentina in 1836, taking with them skills in farming,

blacksmithing and butchery. The ones left behind included Robert Ford, who was a butcher with premises where Lawsons is now. He was born in 1811 and died in 1897. The family lived at Ford Cottages which are now incorporated into Lawsons, but the side of the cottages can be seen through the alleyway between Lawsons and the hairdressers. Alberto and Dolores Ford made the

journey to Ivybridge last month and the heritage group had the pleasure of showing them Ford Cottages and the family graves in the churchyard. They were interested in the background to the village name and knew of J.M.W. Turner’s 1814 painting of the old bridge. Pictured are Dolores Ford, Sheila Hancox (IHAG) and Alberto Ford with the Ford family gravestones.

MEN’S SHED OPENS ITS DOORS A Men’s Shed project has opened to provide a place where local men can get together and have fun while helping others. Yealmpton and Brixton Caring have opened the Men’s Shed at the Grimaud Room in Torr Hill, Yealmpton. The shed contains a purposebuilt and fully equipped workshop, a seating area for a cuppa and a chat, a computer with internet access and facilities to plan and design projects.

Members can get involved in a project or just drop in for a chat – it will be up to members to decide what they become involved with. There will also be the opportunity to learn new skills from fellow members, and from occasional short courses. As well as designing and making new items, anything suitable for renovation can be brought back to life and sold at regular sale events, which will help fund the ongoing cost of running the shed.

Items in need of repair, for both the public and community organisations, can also be fixed by members. For the younger members of the community, there will be an evening a week for under 18s to come and make and repair things with older members on hand to help with their projects. The facilities are also available to ladies, and there will be classes designed to help them learn and develop new skills.

REMEMBRANCE EXHIBITION WILL ‘KEEP THEIR NAMES ALIVE’ An exhibition commemorating The Fallen is being held in Modbury this month. Organised by Modbury Remembers, the weeklong event to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War will ‘keep their names alive’ of those lost fighting for their country. The exhibition will include the stories of the Fallen, Modbury in the 1900s, music and war poetry

04_TIM_Oct18.indd 4

and ‘Beyond the Trench’, an art exhibition of works inspired by the impact of the First World War highlighting the role of women during the war. It will also include the Lost Lives Exhibit – highlighting the true cost of WW1, which has been inspired by ‘Shrouds of the Somme’ artist Rob Heard. Modbury Remembers aims to bring the names of the Modbury

men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the two world wars to life for future generations by researching their family background, where they lived, when they served, where they fell and where they are buried. The exhibition runs from 20th27th October, 10am to 5pm in St George’s Church, Modbury. i modburyremembers.org.uk

People are invited to pop along to the Devon Rural Archive during the first week of October and help them rehome their duplicate and out-of-scope books. The sale will include titles relating to the history of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, as well as books on many other varied subjects. All proceeds will go towards new resources for the DRA library and the on-going care of the archive’s growing collection. If you are a book lover, you will not want to miss this event! There will also be a chance to explore the DRA collection and view current exhibitions. Tea/ coffee and cake will be available to purchase. Rehome a book on Monday 1st, Tuesday 2nd and Thursday 4th October 2018, 11am-3pm. i DRA - Shilstone, Modbury. 01548 830832; office@dra.uk.net www.devonruralarchive.com

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT A breastfeeding support group has been launched in Ivybridge. The NCT Bumps, Babies and Bigs group is on Mondays at Ivybridge Methodist Church between 10-11.30am and is supported by Plymouth Latch On Breastfeeding Peer Supporters. The group of local mums, who have completed specialist peer support training, aim to help and support local parents. The local NCT branch is organising a nearly new sale this month. Savvy parents and parents-to-be can find top quality maternity, baby and toddlers’ clothes, toys and equipment at the sale on Saturday, 27th October, at Eggbuckland Community College between 10.30am and 12.15pm.

BRIDGE REPAIRS Work to replace and repair the Millennium Footbridge in Modbury, which has been closed for an extended period, has started. The existing bridge has been removed and will be replaced with a new bridge built from a galvanised steel frame with a resin-bound anti-slip surface and hand rails made from recycled plastic. It’s hoped that the new bridge will be opening by the end of October.

We use the highly-acclaimed Montessori Method to ensure we bring out the very best in every child. BACK WITH A BANG Stowford Stars field gun crew returned to school with a bang! They were very pleased and proud to receive an exciting delivery of their second field gun. Money for this was kindly donated by Mr & Mrs Sams and Mr Andi Skelley (relatives of children in the field gun crew). The new gun means the newly-founded club can expand and have two crews, offering more children the chance to try out for next year’s competitions BUSY START The new school year has got off to a busy start as the school celebrates its fifth birthday. There are now 98 children and this year sees the first group of Year 6. The children welcomed a Devon Air Ambulance representative to the school and were pleased to present £500 to them following a recent fundraising initiative. The school will shortly be holding open sessions for those deciding school choices for 2019 – see the Facebook page or call the school if you want to find out more.

FUNDRAISING Recently, Manor School has been raising money for St Luke’s Hospice, Plymouth, writes Anna, Year 5. We set up two fundraising events, the first was a book and bun sale and the second was an icecream sale. We decided to do this as an additional sale as the weather got hotter. There were six of us running the events – Chloe, Grace, Charlotte, Isla, Holly and me (Anna). We raised £154 and we were very pleased with our total. Also we really enjoyed having St Luke’s come in to visit us.

ILLUSTRATED TALK

GEORGE EGG RETURNS WITH DIY CHEF Award winning* comedian George Egg (the ‘anarchist cook’) returns with a brand new show demonstrating more live cooking and laugh-out-loud comedy. In ‘George Egg: DIY Chef’ a health scare sees George banned from the family kitchen, but relocated to the garden shed his imagination and resourcefulness lead him to build an improvised kitchen there instead. During an inspiring and inventive evening of stand-up, live cooking and comedy lecture, George prepares a breakfast, a lunch and a dinner using the most unconventional of methods. It’s funny, inspiring and absurd in equal measure. Expect power tools, gardening equipment and office supplies to be re-purposed and abused. Expect lots of laughs. Expect to learn something new.

An illustrated talk on spectacular South African flora, by Rosemary Le Grand, is being hosted by Lukesland on Wednesday, 17th October, at

7pm. Tickets are £10, and prebooking – from Robert Howell on 01752 896011 – is essential.

CATHEDRAL TALK The Building of Exeter Cathedral (Part 2), an illustrated talk by John Allan, is being hosted by Devon Rural Archive on Thursday, 4th October, at 7pm. Founded in AD 1050, the Cathedral is commonly regarded as Devon’s greatest building. The talk, by the Exeter

Cathedral archaeologist, will describe the structural history of the cathedral as well as discuss new insights in understanding this much-researched church. Tickets are £5, booking is advisable – call 01548 830832 or email abi@dra.uk.net

n Ivybridge Flower Club SIMPLICITY Tina Parkes from the Academy of Floral Art used a combination of textiles and flowers for her contemporary designs during her demonstration at the September meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club. She chose coloured wools to compliment the colour of her flowers in one of her displays and autumnal twigs and berries in another. She inspired members to remember that simple arrangements, using minimal flowers and a variety of foliage and berries, can have a stunning visual impact. The clubs AGM will be held at

In 1980, a project got underway to create a tapestry depicting England’s attempts to colonise Newfoundland, North America, the Guianas and Bermuda between the years 1583 and 1642. The New World Tapestry, comprising of 24 panels and measuring just over 81 metres by 1.2 metres, was designed by Plymouth-born artist Tom Mor. Research for the project involved several historians including Tom Maddock from Ivybridge. Due to the sheer scale of the project, larger in size than the famous Bayeux Tapestry, several centres were established in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset to embroider the separate panels. Among the eight centres was one located in Ivybridge. Members of the Women’s Institute volunteered to participate in this epic project. The panel allocated to Ivybridge depicted the 1586 colonisation of Roanoke Island, on the Atlantic coastline of what is now North Carolina. Whilst the tapestry adopted a cartoon style, it still retained the tradition of Tudor and Jacobean embroidery, using a distinct slanted gobelin style of stitching. The panel included some of the famous people of the time such as Francis Drake, Francis Walsingham, principal secretary to Queen Elizabeth I and strong supporter of exploration and colonisation, Ralph Lane, leader of the second expedition to Roanoke in 1586, and Richard Grenville, Admiral of fleet for this second expedition. The panel was embellished with flowers including scabious, parsley, broad leaved dock, Good King Henry, betony, weld, alkanet, crosswort, columbine, hazel and nonesuch.

The panel also carried a small depiction of the Ivy Bridge in recognition of its embroiderers. Work on the panel began in May 1986 with volunteers of the local WI using a rented room at the Methodist Church, kindly sponsored by Wiggins Teape, owners of Stowford Paper Mill. Members of the public were able to come and watch the women at work. The panel was completed in 1990, which appropriately coincided with the Institute’s 70th anniversary. To mark the occasion, members held a special service at the Methodist Church followed by a tea party to which members of other WIs and tapestry centres in Devon and Cornwall were invited. A plaque recording the creation of the 1586 panel of the New World Tapestry exists outside the Methodist Church. The overall project was completed in 2000, 20 years after the first stitch was made. The final number of tapissiers working on the various panels in all the locations amounted to 256. All of them were unpaid volunteers, whilst funding for the canvas, wool and frames came via sponsorship and public donations. Around 35,000 members of the public each paid £1 to add their own stitches. The last stitch (of a total of over 39 million) was made by HRH The Prince of Wales on 3rd March, 2000, in the Orchard Room of his home at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire. With his interest in history and a keen gardener himself, the Prince put his golden wool stitch in the date of the 1642 Great Gardeners and Herbalists’ Panel. Since 2008 the tapestry has been in storage at Bristol City Museum. Many other interesting topics of historical interest can be viewed on the Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group website

BLISTERS Have you got painful blisters? New shoes rubbed your feet? Running in the wet? Prevention is better then cure, says Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry The best way to deal with blisters is to prevent them!. Blisters are caused by friction, particularly on an area that is moist. Cotton socks absorb moisture and stay wet for quite a long time so are best avoided. Wool blend socks feel dry for much longer, so are better at preventing blisters. If you are running, a synthetic pair will wick the moisture away before it can cause a problem. Break in your new shoes gradually so the leather or fabric has a chance to soften and mould to your foot shape.

If you are unfortunate enough to get a blister, then it is important to keep it clean and sterile. While the unbroken skin is covering the blister, it is sterile – it is best to keep it that way as long as possible. Padding around the blister with chiropody felt and a sterile plaster will keep the pressure off it while it heals. If it’s in a position where it is likely to burst, then it is better to drain it with a sterile needle or scalpel and then apply a sterile dressing. You can sterilise the needle by boiling it for 10 minutes, wiping it with rubbing alcohol or passing it through a flame. Pierce the blister at the edge and gently squeeze the fluid out. Keep it covered with a sterile dressing. If you need help treating your blister, then please book an appointment. It is particularly important if there are any signs of infection – heat, redness, or swelling round the blister – to seek assistance. i Call 01752 426075 or visit

KEY IS A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP Is poor sleep affecting your day, asks Tiffany Armitage Most people would agree, a good night’s sleep is the answer to a difficult day, to fight off a cold, and to help us make rational and creative decisions. Its also crucial for maintaining good mental and physical health, cognitive skills (such as communication and memory) and flexibility of thought. In fact, we spend up to a third of our lives asleep – if poor sleep becomes the norm, the cumulative effect can be significant. Whatever the reason for getting less than the recommended 7-9 hours, if it happens on a regular basis, then common problems occur such as low mood, greater risk taking and poor perfor-

mance at work. Creating good “sleep hygiene” can help you create the ideal conditions for a good night’s sleep. We are all different, but this includes having a regular bedtime routine, and regular bed time. Also avoiding caffeine, alcohol and heavy meals late at night. And importantly, steer clear of screens the hour before you sleep (the blue light suppresses melatonin, the body’s chemical that induces sleep). If you find you can still not get out of the sleep deprived spiral, hypnotherapy can help enormously. Over the years I have helped many people get a good night’s sleep, every night. It makes such a difference to people’s ability to cope in the day – it is often the difference that makes the difference! If you would like to find out more, you can contact me by phone, email or through my website (see below). I have a practice in Ivybridge and I’ve recently expanded into Totnes. i Call 01752 710 277, email tiff@

n RICHARDSONS LEGAL SERVICES By Monica Salvioni Reeder – Operations & Client Services at Richardsons Legal Services

PEACE OF MIND Before I started working in this field, legal services were completely unknown to me, despite my 12 years’ experience in Italy. Now, having worked with David Richardson for five years, I realise that legal services are synonymous with “peace of mind”. Here’s why. In England, it is paramount to have a Will. A Will is the first bastion of defence in estate planning and it allows individuals to determine what happens to their estate distributed when they pass away. It is even more important for parents with young children because they can appoint guardians for their young ones and avoid them going into care. Peace of mind. Is a Will enough? Unfortunately, a Will can be vulnerable. In fact, under the Inheritance Act 1975 there are categories of people entitled to an inheritance – some are the obvious ones (children, spouses) but some you might not know about (for instance, an exspouse who has not remarried, even though you may have been divorced for decades). Also, are you aware that assets

passed on under a Will could need a Grant of Probate? What, then, can you do? Although we still need a Will, there is a tool available to us to make sure that our children will benefit from our inheritance – a Home and Asset Protection Trust. There can be no claims under the Inheritance Act 1975 for assets in a Trust. If you dis-inherit your child(ren), who, for instance, you haven’t been in contact with for years, they have no claims on assets in Trust. Your ex-spouse who hasn’t remarried has no claims. No Probate is needed for the assets in Trust, therefore no probate costs and no wait for your beneficiaries. A Home Protection Trust protects you against all unforeseen circumstances whatever they might be in your life. Peace of mind. The moment you have both a Will and a Home Protection Trust, you will enjoy that peace of mind. For a FREE consultation telephone RLS on 0800 014 8031. RLS are fully regulated, insured and approved by trading standards under their “Buy with confidence” scheme

If you, or someone you know, is over 65, has care needs or is vulnerable and doesn’t already receive a disability payment, they may be entitled to Attendance Allowance. Lots of older people who struggle with day-to-day care aren’t claiming Attendance Allowance, which could help them stay independent in their own homes longer, because they think they aren’t entitled to it. Attendance Allowance is a tax free weekly payment of £57.30 or £85.60 depending on the need. It’s not means tested or dependant on savings, it won’t affect your state pension and is exempt from the benefits cap. It can be spent on anything that makes life easier for you, such as someone to help with personal care, taxis to go shopping or to visit family and friends, bills, a stair lift, a cleaner/ gardener or just ensuring you stay safe. If you have had difficulties for six months or longer you can apply for Attendance Allowance, if you are in hospital you can apply, but you won’t receive anything until you come out. If you live in a private care home and pay your own costs you can also apply. If you are terminally ill you can apply straight away and your application will be speeded up. To find out more, visit southhamscab.org.uk and type Attendance Allowance into the “How can we help” search box. To ring the DWP helpline or to ask for an application form, ring 0800 731 0122. If you need help filling in the application form, call Citizens Advice South Hams on 03 444 111 444.

WHO TO TRUST TO PROTECT ASSETS?

LIMITED COMPANY OR SOLE TRADER?

With increasing media attention being given to ‘horror stories’ about Inheritance Tax, paying for care in later life and nursing home fees, it is no wonder that Brits are becoming increasingly concerned about the possibility of losing assets they’ve worked hard for all their lives. Transferring your property to your children, placing the property in trust or creating a family or home protection trust can sometimes be helpful. However, in many cases you could still be landed with a large Capital Gains Tax and/or Inheritance Tax bill. It is also important to remember that you lose all control over the property, as you will no longer own your home. You may, for example, transfer your property to a child only to find that they become bankrupt or divorced. If

this happens your home may be sold as part of the bankruptcy or divorce proceedings. The regulations regarding nursing home fees are very broad. If your intention is to avoid nursing home fees, a local authority has the power to ignore the transfer or trust you have created. Given the above, and the fact the cost of setting up a trust(s) can run into thousands of pounds, not to mention the later potential tax implications you may have to deal with because of it, it’s vital that you take advice from a solicitor or accountant before entering into these schemes; and beware of marketing ploys. Please contact Katherine Millman (a solicitor specialising in Wills, Probate and Powers of Attorney) at Howard & Over solicitors for further details.
