As consumers, we are urged to ‘shop local’ and support local businesses, and rightly so – after all, thriving businesses contribute to a thriving town. But perhaps businesses themselves should also adopt the ‘shop local’ philosophy more often when they need goods and services, and use local businesses as much as is practical; The Ivybridge magazine certainly does – we are printed by ColourXpress, on Exeter Road, for instance. That is why it is good to hear that the business networking breakfasts, on the third Friday of each month, are starting up again this month at The Watermark (see page 21). The meetings will be a great opportunity to make new contacts, share experiences and meet local suppliers and service providers. Oh, and enjoy a tasty breakfast, too!

Record GCSE results for college students STUDENTS AT Ivybridge Community College are celebrating after recording the best GCSE results in the college’s history. The college saw a huge increase in those attaining five A*-C grades (including English and maths), jumping from 66% in 2012 to an exceptional 77% this year, against a national trend which saw the percentage of those receiving top grades drop.
A-Level pass rate up The college’s sixth form students also recorded exceptional A-Level results, with a 100% pass rate across all subjects, and one-in-five gaining either an A or A* grade. The proportion of students achieving A*-B grades was also an excellent 44%, with the overall pass rate an increase on last year. An impressive 181 students have secured university places. In our August issue, we told Oops! you how you could win a free Christmas magic show for your community group or good cause (pg 9), but, unfortunately, we omitted the email address for entries – sorry! To enter, email trap doorentertainment@hotmail.com before midnight on 15 September, saying, in less than 300 words, why your good cause or community group deserves a free show.

Town’s voice on council could be lowered IVYBRIDGE COULD see its representation on South Hams District Council cut under proposals for new council wards. The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has proposed that Ivybridge should be divided into two wards, using the River Erme as the boundary, each represented by two councillors. This would see the town, the biggest in the South Hams, have one fewer representative than at present and bigger wards. The commission’s draft recommendations also propose that SHDC should have 31 councillors in future, nine fewer than at present. The commission has been looking at the South Hams due to the current relatively high level of electoral inequality, with the aim of ensuring that each disfacebook.com/theivybridgemagazine
trict councillor represents roughly the same number of voters. The commission has launched a consultation process to enable people to comment on the proposals, which runs until 11 November. To find out more about the proposals, go to the dedicated web page for the South Hams electoral review – lgbce.org.uk/allreviews/south-west/devon/south-hamsfer where you can view an interactive map. Hard copies are also available to view at council buildings and libraries. To have your say, write or email by 11 November: The Review Officer (South Hams), Local Government Boundary Commission for England, Layden House, 76-86 Turnmill Street, London, EC1M 5LG, email reviews@lgbce.org.uk

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council
Live and kicking
HYDRO POWER AT IVYBRIDGE The Environment Agency often finds it hard to balance the benefit of power generation against the impact of taking water out of the Erme in Ivybridge and the environmental impact on fish, and it has inevitably resulted in a scheme not being able to be supported. However, in recent years a small scheme adjacent to Stowford Paper Mill had been investigated, but now, with the closure of the site as an operational Mill at the end of 2013, efforts to try and reuse the hydro power infrastructure – much of which is intact – are ongoing, and in conjunction with Hawkins Hydro meetings are being held with the Environment Agency to try and see if a scheme which could make any new development on the Mill site self-sufficient for power. Obviously we will be in the hands of the new owner of the site and it is to be hoped that if Stowford Mill is sold by the end of 2013 that we can have a dialogue to promote the hydro options and use part of the towns heritage and make it relevant for the future. The Town Council is working with Hawkins Hydro with the intention that in due course people in the town will have a financial stake in the project.
TOWN COUNCILLORS Our two newest Councillors – Mike Starks and Sylvia Rutley – joined the Town Council at the end of July following the elections in Filham Ward. However, whilst we gained two, we then lost one of our most experienced Councillors, Mrs Frances Green (nee Reeve). Frances, who completed her second tenure as Mayor in May when she stepped into the breach following the resignation of Trevor Parsons, deferred her planned retirement from January 2013 until now in order to support the Town Council through its transition period. We all wish her well in her retirement and thank her for her dedicated service to the town over the last 10 years. Councillor contact details, agendas and many other documents are published on the council’s website and there is a ‘contact us’ section in case you should have any general questions that you wish to raise. If you wish to know more about what is happening in relation to the Council then please go to www.ivybridge.gov.uk CONTACT THE TOWN COUNCIL

CARE HOME FEES eople sometimes say to me “I want to give my home away to my son or daughter so that I don’t lose it to pay for care fees”. My answer is; “Don’t do it.” This path is fraught with risks and dangers. You lose control of your home, and you could lose your home altogether if your son or daughter gets into financial difficulty one day, or is involved in a divorce settlement. And, if your son or daughter should pre-decease you, your property will be distributed according to their will. On top of all this, should you need long-term care within seven years of giving your property away, the local council will probably see this gift as deliberate deprivation of assets due to the seven year rule, and the property can still be lost and have to be sold to pay for care fees. A trust WILL, however, protect against all unforeseen eventualities whatever they may be, provided the trust was not taken out with deliberate deprivation in
to the cost of the home you are protecting. Free consultations are available to discuss the suitability of your case. Cash savings and other assets can also be put into your trust, and in some cases discretionary trusts can be used to reduce or remove inheritance tax liability from your estate.

by David Richardson of Richardsons Legal Services mind. Unforeseen eventualities can be debt, bankruptcy, divorce settlements, care fees, or anything else. A home protection trust has many more advantages, such as removing the need for probate after death, and making things simpler for your beneficiaries who do not have to wait months for probate to deal with your property. And the savings on probate costs alone can often be more than the cost of the trust in the first place. The way to protect your property fully and instantly is by creating a family trust. The cost is only a small amount compared

Dealing with Probate yourself n tough economic times, it comes as no surprise that people are costcutting at every possible opportunity. This can, however, come at a large cost. When a loved one dies, you may be left with the responsibility of dealing with their estate, whether through a Will or through the Laws of Intestacy. The role as a personal representative/ executor is an important one, it is, however, one that should not be undertaken lightly. It is a common misconception that debts die with the deceased. If the estate is able to make payment of the debts, then you are under a duty to ensure that the debt is paid. You are not, however, personally responsible for the payment of debts owed by the estate if it is unable to pay it, unless

by Katherine Millman of Howard & Over Solicitors you have made a mistake in the distribution. If you take on the role of an executor you may be personally responsible for: ● Reduced value of estate assets (if you could have reasonably avoided it). E.g. if you accepted a below-market price for the sale of a property. ● Fines/interest imposed by the Revenue. ● Expenditure which is normally

reclaimable out of the estate (e.g. estate agents fees) where there is not sufficient money. ● Overpayments to beneficiaries. ● Further monies to be paid to a trustee in bankruptcy if you have distributed to a bankrupt beneficiary. Executors also have a duty to use an appropriate degree of care and skill, which includes ensuring that assets are distributed in a timely manner, as well as making sure that assets are secure/insured. If you are given the responsibility of administering someone’s estate, seek legal advice as soon as possible to ensure you’re not out of pocket. Please contact Katherine Millman (a solicitor specialising in Wills, Probate and Lasting Powers of Attorney) at Howard & Over for further details.

A sponsored walk raised £700 for two local causes, the 1st Ivybridge Scouts and the Friends of Beaconville Nursing Home. The walk gave Morag Rowse, activities organiser at Beaconville, the chance to dress up in her favourite role, the Pink Cowboy Fairy with Attitude. “We got some very strange looks,” said Morag. “But it certainly got people’s attention!”.

A FLEDGLING TABLE tennis club is getting set for the cut and thrust of competitive action after entering a local league. Ivybridge TTC, formed little over six months ago, has entered four teams into the Plymouth League, which starts this month. The club started as a joint venture with Chaddlewood TTC to coach juniors, but soon expanded to meet the need for an adult practise session in Ivybridge. Fifty players have attended at various times, most attending regularly to take their table tennis to a higher level. The club meets every Wednesday (see centre pages). Call club secretary Alan Spencer on 07712 896185 or search for Ivybridge Table Tennis Club on Facebook.

RUGBY FOR GIRLS A NEW INITIATIVE to provide rugby opportunities for girls in Ivybridge has been launched. Ivybridge Rugby Club, with the support of the RFU and Ivybridge Community College, is starting a girls team and to give girls a flavour of what rugby has to offer the club held a ‘taster session’ to encourage them to join. The club has high hopes that it can offer girls a much better opportunity to play rugby locally than before. Girls interested in playing should contact the girls’ team manager Karen Pringle on pringlefish@btinternet.com
