WONDER-LAND PRODUCTION Local dignitaries, family and friends enjoyed an Alice in Wonderland-themed party at the open day of the Stairways Club. Members of the club for adults with learning difficulties put on a special production of Alice in Wonderland, talked about some of the activities they do at the club and served refreshments to guests including the town’s MP, Gary Street, Mayor Cllr Karen Pringle and district councillors. Every member of the club had at least one role in the production, and they also made the costumes and props during club meetings. Stairways Club, which has been going for nine years, is a free club which meets on Friday mornings between 9.30am and 12.30pm in

the Scout hut off Blachford Road. The activities, which include cookery, drama, art, writing, games and trips, are intended to help members build confidence, help communication, improve social skills and develop new abilities.

Can you help?

Stairways would really like another volunteer to work with members at the Friday morning meetings, as well as another Trustee to help run the charity. They are also on the look out for a tall locking cupboard. If you can help, contact Ann or Barbara. î To find out more, or if you would

Walk this way to better health

Walking is one of the easiest ways to get and stay active, and a scheme in Ivybridge is on hand to provide encouragement and support for those wishing to walk their way to a healthier lifestyle. Ivybridge Walk and Talk offers walks on two days of the week. On Tuesdays, there is an ‘Easy Going Walk’ for those who don’t currently do much physical activity or who have restricted mobility. Starting at 10am from the leisure centre, it can take between 30 and 45 minutes to an hour and covers flat, level, hard surfaced paths. On Thursdays, there is a ‘Moderate Walk’ for those who already do a small amount of activity and would like to increase this, or who have a minor mobility problem but are able to walk at a moderate speed and cope with some hills. This walk starts at 10am as well, also from the leisure centre, and lasts roughly an hour, with some gradients, possibly steps and uneven terrain. For both walks, meet first inside Ivybridge Leisure Centre. www.theivybridgemagazine.co.uk

All sessions are led by trained, friendly walk leaders and are free. All you need are comfortable shoes, loose fitting clothing and waterproofs if wet. NEW WORK CLUB Ivybridge Library has teamed up with learndirect to deliver a new Work Club. Held every Monday between noon and 2pm, the club can help people with searching and applying for work, provide advice on writing a CV and covering letters, and interview help and preparation. There is also expert advice and guidance available on training and qualification opportunities. The club is free and you can just drop in, there is no need to book an appointment. ERME ROAD CLOSURE After a break for the Christmas and New Year holiday, Erme Road will again be closed for improvement work to storm chamber. The work is scheduled to take place between 5th-16th January, 2015. As before, a signed alternative route will be put in place.

DAD’S MEMORY SPURRING TOM ON

An Ivybridge man is set to grow his beard and hair for an entire year to raise money for charity. Tom Ingham signed up for Beating Bowel Cancer’s Decembeard campaign in memory of his dad, also called Tom, who died of the disease in 2004. “I'm making a promise to not shave my beard or cut my hair until the end of December 2015,” said Tom. “When I heard about Beating Bowel Cancer’s Decembeard campaign I signed up immediately and I’d encourage anybody who has been touched by the disease like our family to support the campaign and help us to raise awareness of the symptoms and funds for the charity.” Tom, 28, is no stranger to raising money in memory of his father, having taking part in the ‘Stand Up To Cancer’ campaign which involved him staying on his feet for 24 hours straight. Tom’s father had a long history of bowel cancer. He survived the disease following his first diagnosis, but lost his battle when diagnosed for a second time in 2004 at the age of 75. Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer, and over a hundred people are diagnosed with it every day. Yet over 90% of cases can be treated successfully if caught early. î To support Tom go to

Ivybridge is one of 12 communities across Devon to have been chosen to take part in a pioneering new partnership project to test how they can support their local libraries and expand the services they provide. As a result, the Ivybridge Community Project group has been formed to work closely with the community in order to ensure that the library delivers an enhanced service to residents. Devon County Council will work with the group to help shape the new organisation and try out new ways of involving local people so they can have more say on how their library is run. Ivybridge county councillor Roger Croad, and Devon County Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for the library service, said:

“I am really looking forward to working with the pilot group to explore and develop their ideas for local solutions to meet their community’s needs. “Their support is vital to the successful future of our library service. “The ideas we trial, and the knowledge we gain, will benefit every library in Devon, and each community will have a role in shaping a new way of operating and delivering our library service.” Devon Voluntary Action (DeVA) will be working with the council to help support the community groups throughout the pilot project. family-run Ivybridge business, which has one of the most recognisable shop fronts on Fore Street, is set to celebrate a quarter of a century of serving local people in 2015. Swift Dry Cleaners was established at 44 Fore Street, where the business still operates today, by Gil and Carol Edwards in December 1990, and while all around has been changing, the business, built on offering the best cleaning clothes can get with professional service, has stood the test of time to remain a firm favourite with local people. “It is quite a milestone these days to have been established so long,” said Gil. “It is a reflection, I think, of the professional service we pride ourselves on, and which we have offered from the first day we opened. “I could not have started the business without the wonderful support of Carol. She was a big part of the team (son Patrick joined in 1991), handling the accounts behind the scenes, but most importantly she was the smiling, friendly face people saw when they came into the shop.” Carol (pictured in the shop) sadly died in May 2013, leaving a big void not only in the business team but the family too. hrough the year, we have produced a series of informative articles about the moor lying to the north of Ivybridge. Dartmoor is the single largest unbroken area of tranquillity in the south of England and the principal source of drinking water for around 840,000 people. Around 90% of Dartmoor is used for farming, producing 13,000 calves and 76,000 lambs per year. Among other things, Dartmoor has: u The most important Bronze Age archaeology in Western Europe. u The longest stone row in the world (3.4 km long), in the upper Erme valley. u 60% of all stone rows in England. u 2,800 listed buildings. u 4,078 scheduled monuments. u The southernmost blanket bogs in Europe. u The world’s largest land slug, the Ash Black Slug, which can exceed 200 mm, in its woodlands.

Who looks after Dartmoor? Dartmoor is privately owned. As it is mainly used for farming, most of the management is done by farmers, balancing agriculture with conservation to ensure it remains sustainable. The Dartmoor National Park Authority exists to control development and encourage responsible uses of this unique landscape. Where can we go? Walkers, riders and cyclists are permitted on over 730km of rights-of-way and over 46,600 hectares of open access or common land (40% of the National Park). What are the dangers? The biggest danger is the weather. The open moor is high, cold and exposed. Rain and fog can come surprisingly quickly. Never try to cross a flooded river, even if it means walking a mile extra. How do I avoid getting into trouble? Go prepared! Take the right clothing for the cold and wet, wear boots, and carry a map and compass. And then just be sensible about time 10

and distance, so you don’t get caught out. What mustn’t we do? Public rights of access assume that people exercising these rights will do so responsibly. So you must not: • Leave any litter (there are no street sweepers here); • Light fires; • Pollute streams (they are all domestic water supplies); • Damage walls, gates or fences; • Let your dog chase livestock or birds; • Drive cars or motorbikes on the moor.

What should we do to keep it this way? Enjoy it peacefully, pick up litter, challenge irresponsible people and do no harm yourself. In this crowded island of ours, it is not easy to keep a place so wild and full of solace. As Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote: What would the world be, once bereft Of wet and of wilderness? Let them be left, O let them be left, wildness and wet; Long live the weeds and the wilderness yet. Litter on the moor above Ivybridge: why go and spoil such a pristine place so thoughtlessly?

So are we allowed to enjoy it? Yes, of course. It’s a great place for walking, so just go out and see for yourself. The changing lights and colours of the seasons, and the great views over the South Hams and out to sea, are all there waiting to be enjoyed. A mile from Ivybridge and you are into southern England’s biggest open space and some of Europe’s best archaeology. FOODBOXES WITH A FESTIVE FLAVOUR Generous donations from members of the public and a local preschool meant there was a festive flavour to foodboxes provided to needy families by Ivybridge Foodbank this Christmas. ‘Project Advent Calendar’, which was spread on social media, encouraged people to donate Advent calendars, and other festive food items, to help bring a touch of Christmas to families in need. As well as Advent calendars, Christmas puddings, shortbread and sweets were among the goodies donated.

The children from Ivybridge PreSchool visited the Foodbank to personally deliver their donations, which included chocolates, fluffy toys and chocolate coins. Ivybridge Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust, was established in October 2012 and distributed its first foodbox at the end of January 2013. It provides foodboxes, containing a minimum of three days nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food, to people identified as being in crisis by frontline care professionals such as doctors and social workers.

WONDERFUL WACKY WINTER WOOLLIES

Woodlands Park Primary School joined the nation on Friday, 12 December, in a mufti ‘Wear a Christmas Jumper Day’ to raise funds for Save the Children. The children were encouraged to design their own Christmas jumpers and the result was some wonderful wacky winter woollies worn by both children and staff. Festive cakes were baked by the staff and sold at break time. They were obviously enjoyed by every-

FLOWER CLUB MEETING CHANGE There was a good attendance at the December meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club, with over 20 visitors joining members to enjoy a Christmas demonstration by Gretchen White, originally from Southampton but now living in Bishopsteignton. Gretchen’s programme was entitled “Memories of Christmas” and each arrangement was based on one of her childhood memories of the festive season. Candles (the smell of them when they were snuffed), the fire in a stove in the hearth, Christmas food, nuts and finally snow. Each design was well executed and beautifully conditioned materials used to compliment each title. By the end of the evening everyone was well and truly in the mood for Christmas. The club’s next meeting is on Monday, 12th January – this represents a big change for the club, with meetings changing from the second Tuesday of the month to the second Monday of the month – at the Watermark, starting at 7.30pm. A NATIVITY PLAY TO REMEMBER

Audiences of family and friends were treated to a nativity to remember by Manor Primary’s Key Stage 1 children when Lord of the Dance was performed to packed audiences at the Methodist Church.

The annual Christmas Performances by the children at Stowford School once again enchanted families and friends. Key Stage 1 children performed The Hopeless Camel, telling the story of the camel who finally led the Three Wise Men to the stable after a few wrong turns through songs, dances and drama. All the

children from Foundation to Year 2 had a part to play – from the busy town people of Bethlehem to the angels that filled the sky. Key Stage 2 performed their traditional Carol Concert at the Methodist Church, re-telling the Christmas story through a mixture of songs and readings in afternoon and evening shows.

The children of Woodlands Park Primary School entertained parents, family and friends in the lead up to Christmas with an eclectic mix of festive productions. The eldest children performed The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Stage props of 3D shapes, which were designed and built by the children, were moved around to represent different items during the performance Found and Lost at Christmas was the Years 3 and 4 show. The children created this magical Christmas spectacular by writing their own script, using their knowledge of the continents to make sure each lost animal was safely home in time for Christmas.

Years 1 and 2 also wrote their own script for How to Catch a Star. The children of Woodlands Park want a star for Christmas,so Santa needed all the elves and fairies to catch stars for him. After several failed attempts, they succeed in completing Santa’s mission. Once again the Nativity was performed by the new Foundation Classes and, of course, it brought a warm smile to everyone watching. www.theivybridgemagazine.co.uk

Team captains Pip, Amelia and Harry plant their Sycamore House tree

The children at Manor Primary enjoyed a tree planting session to mark the launch of a new House system at the school. Each child is now a member of either ‘Beech’, ‘Oak’, ‘Willow’ or ‘Sycamore’, and the House captains took charge of planting their tree on the school field with their teammates watching and helping out. The children are looking forward to watching their House trees grow and thrive, and in the spring term will be burying time capsules underneath them to be discovered by future generations of Manor children.

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council Celebrating community life

During 2014, the Town Council columns have dealt with a range of topics, from the perennial dog fouling issue to the future planning for our town to 2031. Everyone is aware of the cuts to public sector services yet local councils – Town and Parish Councils – are endeavouring to work with community representatives to retain those services which are considered to be important and to see how they can be adapted to operate on a smaller budget, which undoubtedly is going to depend on volunteers coming forward. Every year, Ivybridge Town Council has its Citizen of the Year award which celebrates volunteers who have given an extraordinary amount of their time and skills for the community, but this doesn’t mean that those people who give an hour or two each week aren’t similarly valued. The town will increasingly depend on people giving a little of their time on a regular basis if we are to keep services like Ivybridge Caring, Youth Services, support groups and emergency assistance (eg Foodbanks and snow wardens). It is likely that whatever your skills, there is an opportunity for you to help. We already know from the generous response to being part of the Christmas Day party at The Watermark – both in volunteer time and financial donations – that people of Ivybridge do care and will try and help whenever they can. In 2015 we will be working with the churches, police, Leisure centre and youth workers to try and offer a new style of youth service. To start with we want to ask the young people what they want as it might not be what we think they want, and to that end we will be going out and about to speak with young people in Ivybridge. Like adults they will not all want the same but it would be great to have a range of activities and informal chilling out areas; but what do we know! The Library service in Ivybridge is not under threat of being closed, but the Friends Group have opted with the Library staff to find different ways of running the service, with the aim of making the Library more accessible with extended hours of opening, trying out some innovative ideas and generally aiming to better meet the needs of residents. If you have any thoughts about extending access or new services at no greater cost then please contact the Library staff. Ideas are welcomed. IMAG, (Ivybridge Mill Archives Group) our local history group, born out of the closure of Stowford paper Mill, are broadening their wings and a new website will be developed in the Spring called “Ivybridge Uncovered”, but focusing still on “A Mill Town Heritage”. If you can offer any memories or memorabilia to contribute to the archive then please contact the Town Hall or look for their facebook page. Finally, we will want you to think about the future and by 2031 what Ivybridge could look like. It is clear that there will be more older people in the town, so health facilities, access to local services and suitable housing will be important, but equally we want to become known for our healthy lifestyles, building on the excellence that is regularly demonstrated by our sports groups. The Vision of the Neighbourhood Plan is: “Ivybridge, a Friendly Mill Town, offering the opportunity for healthy and sustainable lifestyles with a future which embraces its edge of Moor, bridge and riverside location.” Do help us to build on those attributes for 2015 and let’s make Ivybridge a welcoming and inclusive place to live, now and for the future. Eighty per cent of resolutions won't last until Valentines Day, because “will power” alone is simply not enough. Most of what you do is controlled by your powerful, habit-forming subconscious mind. The more you do something, the stronger the habit becomes. When we decide to change a ‘bad’ habit, it takes the efforts of the conscious brain. When we do something new enough times it becomes a subconscious habit. This process takes around six weeks. Unfortunately, it’s not so simple, and not always successful. Metaphorically speaking, if an elephant (the subconscious mind) is happy, then without too much persuasion from its rider (the conscious mind) it will do something new. However, if the elephant is sad or anxious it will take greater and more sustained effort from the rider. The rider soon wears out and the elephant slips back to the old, comfortable habit. The rider then often gets cross with the elephant, who becomes more anxious, and more stuck in the old habit! There are things we can do to improve our odds: • Tackle one issue at a time. • Plan before you start (decide what you are going to do, and organise the help you are going to get). • Be gentle on yourself if you slip back - never stop trying! • Measure your success each week and reward yourself as you reach each small goal. If you find you still struggle to maintain your success, hypnotherapy can help work with your subconscious mind, to get all of you on board, reduce anxiety and make it easy to form that new habit. Tai Chi is an exercise system that almost anyone can partake in. It does not require any special clothing or equipment and, with a little time, patience and practice, can lead to great improvements in health and vitality.

How does Tai Chi improve health?

Tai Chi places emphasis on the quality of movement and improving the posture, which serves to reduce physical tension thereby improving circulation, allowing breathing to be deeper, taking the pressure off overstressed joints and improving the strength and elasticity of ligaments and tendons.

‘Meditation in movement’

Tai Chi is as much a mental discipline as a physical one. Many people find that when they try to focus on one thing their attention is soon drawn to another. The mind, like the body, can be trained to improve its ability to concentrate. When this concentration is applied to the exercises we are performing, their effectiveness is enhanced. This has its own benefit as it tends to stop mental chatter or circling thought.

Is Tai Chi difficult to learn?

No. All of the exercises can be modified to suit the person doing them, making Tai Chi approachable by people of all

ages and abilities. Anyone with the desire to improve their health can, with a reasonable commitment to practice, expect to feel benefits within two months and sometimes sooner.

Why are Tai Chi exercises done slowly?

The majority of movements are done slowly to begin with for two main reasons. The first is that moving this way gives you time to explore each movement in great detail and provides the opportunity to relax while you are exercising. The second is that it makes exercising (in particular stretching) very safe, as you can feel what effect a particular exercise is having on you and gauge when it is just right for your body.

How to meditate BY STEPHEN HARDING

Would you like to calm your mind? Would you like to relax your body? Have you thought about learning to meditate?

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON GETTING STARTED 1) Where: Choose somewhere relatively quiet where you will not be disturbed for at least 10 minutes. 2) When: The best time is in the morning before breakfast or late afternoon before dinner. Find a time that suits you preferably before eating. 3) How long: Decide how much time you would like to spend meditating. Ten minutes is a good starting point, you could increase this as you feel more comfortable with the practice. Use an alarm to measure the time spent. 4) Body Position: Any relaxed sitting position that allows you to sit comfortably, quietly and awake for the duration of your practice. You can sit on a chair, sofa, on the floor... What is most important is that you are comfortable, that you can hold the pose easily, and that you are able to stay awake. The best position for meditation sessions that are longer than about 20 minutes is one of the traditional postures for sitting on the floor. You could even lay down, although you may feel as if you are going to sleep.

Happy New Year

At the end of 2014, Ella and I hosted a couple of really good volunteering days at Glasscombe Corner (above South Brent) to clear vegetation from this unique archaeological site - it’s the only place on Dartmoor which has seven parallel stone rows. It was identified by DNPA and English Heritage as being at risk of being lost because of vegetation overgrowth, so a bunch of volunteers spent two days clearing back the gorse and heather to make the features more prominent in the landscape, There is still plenty of work to be done on the site, so please contact myself or Ella if you are interested in helping out. Work has finally finished on the footpath under the viaduct beside the Erme to try and repair the eroded path, but also to install a better drainage system to cope with future wet weather. Hopefully this will now hold for several years to come. Unfortunately, not such great news for the Kings Leat Gutter path higher above the river. I was hoping to dig out some of the bank and install a “buddle” hole to let the water drain off the path, but when on site it soon became apparent that spades and shovels were not up to the task. I now need to organise a small digger to visit the site to dig out the (rather large) bank; this path is becoming my nemesis – I will not be defeated! Over the next couple of months Ella and I will be continuing our path surveys and erosion surveys around the area and assisting landowners and commoners with any swaling (moorland burning) which may be required. Swaling is permitted from November to the end of March and is a controlled way to clear large areas of vegetation. We will also be arranging some more dates for volunteering on the Glasscombe Corner site.

RANGER RALPH CLUB

A DNPA Ranger’s role is often varied, and always a challenge, writes Ella. One of our great successes is the Ranger Ralph Club. Set up over 10 years ago, the club is aimed at 5-12 year olds and their families, with Ranger-led activities run throughout the year all over Dartmoor – all for free once you are a member. Members get a welcome pack with a card, stickers, badge, ruler and pencil, colouring book and folder to keep it in, followed by quarterly newsletters with seasonal news, competitions, things to make and do, and also information about up and coming activities. We programme in a whole variety of Dartmoor experiences, building on mainly environmental themes, ideal for the young nature enthusiast. As a Ranger, it is always good fun organising and running these monthly sessions, which have included bird box making, pond dipping, orienteering, building coracles, World Ranger Day and worm charming! It gives members the opportunity to learn something a little bit different about Dartmoor, and often gives us the opportunity to team up with local enthusiasts too. A REMINDER OF THE RULES The town’s dog warden is wishing all dog owners the very best for 2015, and has thanked those supporting her work in the town, particularly the Town Council. Tracey Weaver is keen, however, that dog owners fully understand both their responsibilities to their pet and the Dog Control Orders in pace in the area. “A dog is for life,” says Tracey. “So please, before deciding to get a puppy, no matter what time of the year it is, make sure you fully understand the responsibilities which they come with: • Time consuming training (essential); ▪ Routine (essential) and perhaps, emergency visits to the vet, which can be costly; ▪ Walkies twice a day, regardless of the weather!; ▪ Proper shelter, food and water; ▪ Careful consideration of what happens to him/her when you are on holiday; ▪ A life of picking up and correctly disposing of dog poo, whether an adult walks the dog, or whether this is delegated to a younger family member “The reward is a lifetime of playful interaction, a lot of fun, and the best friend ever!”

CHRISTMAS FARE

Parents, relatives and friends, and pupils past and present made for a busy Stowford School Christmas Fair as they stocked up on Christmas presents and visited Father Christmas. The fair was opened by the school choir, who have also visited Abbeyfield House and the Donkey Sanctuary to spread the Christmas spirit, with a selection of favourite festive tunes. The ever-popular Secret Room gave the children a chance to buy and wrap presents for mums and dads and there was a huge range of stalls run by pupils offering games, beauty treatments and homemade gifts and goodies. The event, organised by Stowford Friends, raised £1,684, which will go towards the school’s ongoing project to ensure that playtimes are more creative and enrich the children’s learning experiences during their time at the school.

A familiar four-legged friend will be missing from around Ivybridge following the death of Golden Retriever Oliver. During his 16-and-a-half years living in the town, Oliver became known to many people and was a regular visitor to shops on Fore Street in search of biscuits. In that time he made many friends, especially in Swift Dry Cleaners where he visited the late Carol Edwards, Gill and Patrick. Oliver made his final visit to vet Steve Grills, at Filham Park Vets, on 3rd December and owner Sue Binns would like to thank Steve for his compassionate and kind treatment of Oliver on that visit.

Ivybridge football New team set for prodigy selected for league debut England U17s squad

A NEW IVYBRIDGE netball team is set to make its debut in a local league this month. Ivybridge Ladies Netball was started in September following a great response from local ladies to a social network post. Many of those attending hadn’t played netball since school, but the enthusiasm has been so great that the group has quickly grown, with regular attendees able to form two teams playing games every week alongside training. The group meets at Ivybridge Community College Sports Hall and as of 4 January will be meeting every Sunday morning 9.30-10.30am. The group has joined the Plymouth & District Netball League and will be starting playing Division 5 matches from January through to May 2015. Active Devon has been very supportive in providing funding and advice with regards to training and coaching opportunities, and Manning & Co Financial Advisers is sponsoring the team’s kit. All are welcome to get involved, whether it’s with the intention of playing in the team or just for the social and fitness aspect. The cost is £2 per session. î ivyladiesnetball@yahoo.co.uk

IVYBRIDGE COMMUNITY College football prodigy Jessie Jones has set her sights on helping England qualify for the Under 17 European Championships after being selected for the National Squad. Jessie, who had already captained and scored for England Schools’ Under 15 team, has taken the step up despite still being just 15 years old. She was in the Under 17 side that played Germany on 10 November and later this month she hopes to join the rest of the squad at a training camp at St George’s Park, the home of the National Football Centre. As part of an intense training regime, Jessie trains up to 20 hours per week, including sessions with the Devon, Plymouth Argyle and Ivybridge CC girls’ teams, as well as additional fitness sessions. Mark Gammon, director of Devon Girls’ Football, which is based at Ivybridge CC, who has been a coach at Plymouth Argyle for more than a decade and has a UEFA ‘A’ coaching licence, believes she has the talent and determination to play professionally. “Jessie’s standard of play has risen so much that we train her with the boys in our Ivybridge Football Academy. “I truly believe that she can go all the way, representing England at Under 19, 21, 23 and ultimately at Senior Level.” Jessie’s selection for the squad follows an extremely successful year for the Ivybridge student, who played several times for the England Under 15 and Under 16 teams earlier in the year. In addition to her footballing success, all-rounder Jessie also has an England Under 15 cap in cricket. Jessie said: “I love both cricket and football, but football is my number one priority. Not many girls get to make it big in football, but my ambition is to

play for Arsenal Ladies and the full England team.” She now hopes to perform well in training camps and be chosen for the second stage of the Euro Qualifiers against the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland and Hungary. The matches will be held in the Republic of Ireland from 9 -14 April and the finals will take place in Iceland in June. “It is a great opportunity for me. I love playing and I love meeting up with the other girls on the team, as the atmosphere is excellent and everyone gets behind each other. I can’t wait to get out there and play for my country again.”

ERME VALLEY HARRIER athlete Will Battershill (right) continued his fine form by winning the Under 17 Men’s Title at the Devon Cross Country Championships held at Exeter. In the same race, Owen Parkin finished 7th, but unfortunately Nathan Brown had to drop out through injury and deprived the Harriers of the team award. Cleo Andrews finished top Devon vet 40 lady and was rewarded with selection for Devon. The Harriers turned out in force at the demanding Drogo 10, a multi-terrain event starting and finishing at Castle Drogo. There were many fine performances. Neil Holmes was the first Harrier home in 11th place 38

overall and 2nd . Tom Packer (59th), Sarah Hirons (80th) and Mike Hoskins (81st) all made the top 100 in a race which had 496 finishers. Meanwhile, Andy Norris and Mark Livermore represented the club at the Cornish Marathon. Norris had a great run and was 9th overall in a time of 2.58.31. Norris was also 2nd mv40. Livermore found it hard going after 18 miles and finished in 249th place in a time of 4.47.13.

At the Gosport Half Marathon, Alison McEwing had a superb run and finished in a time of 1.22.59. Closer too home at the Bicton Blister, Mike Hoskin and Sarah Hirons did well on a tough course.
