NEWS SUN SHINES ON BOWLERS

Members of the Ivybridge Bowls Club enjoyed a warm and sunny afternoon for the opening day of the summer season on Saturday, 8th April. The club, whose pristine green

is tucked away on Bridge Park in Ivybridge, has recently extended its clubhouse, greatly enhancing the facilities for members. The club’s men and ladies teams actively compete in local leagues

and members meet on Monday mornings and Wednesday evenings for club games. New members – young, middle and senior – are always welcome on these days to come along and

HANNAHS CELEBRATES 250TH ANNIVERSARY The Dame Hannah Rogers Trust is 250 years old this year. To mark this milestone the charity has launched Hannahs’ Big 250 fundraising campaign, which will run for 250 days. The Trust was founded in 1767 following a £10,000 legacy left by Dame Hannah Rogers, the wife of a Plymouth MP, for “the poor and unfortunate children of Plymouth”. Over two centuries on and the Trust now works from sites in Ivybridge and Seale-Hayne and that relatively small amount of

money in today’s terms has helped hundreds of thousands of children, young people and adults with a range of disabilities over the years. Hannahs’ Big 250 challenges individuals to raise £250, and companies and groups £2,500, by 16th December 2017. Money raised will help provide activities, days out, experiences, training and employment opportunities for even more children, young people and adults with a range of disabilities. To launch the celebrations, the

250th Hannah-versary Exhibition has opened in the gallery at Seale-Hayne (and runs until 21st May). The exhibition features photographs that not only tell the “Hannahs’ Story” but also highlight why the inspirational charity has such an important place in people’s hearts. A timeline explains more about the incredible history of Hannahs. î To pledge your support for the campaign and receive a fundraising pack, contact Hayley Dann at hayley.dann@discoverhannahs.org

SORRY GIRLS

In our article in the April issue about the magnificent seven girls at Woodlands PPS who raised a whopping £237.43 for Cancer Research we left out the names of two of the girls. Our apologies to Ebony and Isabelle, who along with Molly, Ella, Lola, Poppy and Teigan, helped organise the fundraising sale and raise such a fantastic amount of money.

Do you like listening to short stories and poems? If so, Read & Reminisce, a free drop-in group on Wednesday mornings, is for you. Lead by volunteer facilitators Sue and Susie, who have been trained by The Reader Organisation, short stories and poems are read out loud while people enjoy tea, coffee and biscuits. Sometimes the stories and poems bring back memories and people share these if they wish. The group especially welcomes those living with memory loss and dementia and their carers. There is no commitment to attend every week, although many who

come along started by just dropping in and found that they made friends, and liked it so much they come as often as they can. “I really look forward to Wednesday mornings,” said Sheila. “We all enjoy the stories and poems, and have a good laugh as well.” There is something for everyone, and people are welcome to join in as and when they can. Read & Reminisce is on Wednesday mornings, 10.30am to 12noon, in the Beacon room in The Watermark. î For more information, phone Sue on 01752 896444 or Susie on 01752 335294, or speak to a one of the library staff on 01752 893140

ROGER CROAD Conservative Party Roger and his family have lived in Ivybridge for some 36 years. He is married to Diane and their two daughters both attended local schools before going on to university – grandchildren now both attend Stowford Primary. The family are all involved with several charities, especially the superb Children’s Hospice SW. Roger is a former Army Officer and was for 10 years head of Engineering Safety London Underground. He is committed to service with economy and firmly believes that LAUREL LAWFORD Liberal Democrat Laurel is 25 and a former pupil of Kingsbridge Community College. She was a candidate at the last District Elections. Laurel knows how difficult it is for young people to be able to afford to live in the area. She is also disappointed with the poor public transport and dismayed at the recent cuts by the County Council. Laurel wants to see more and better jobs around Ivybridge so that young families will stay. She is opposed to the 100s of TONY REA Labour Party I have lived in Ivybridge since 1999, having moved here to work as a school teacher. My four children went to Ivybridge Community College, where I was a Parent Governor, and I have served Ivybridge in the past as a Town Councillor. I am standing in this election because I believe that I have the knowledge, skills and experience to do a first-class job as a County Councillor and get a better deal for Ivybridge from County Hall. Since November I have been listening to people on the door-

good planning and sound financial judgement are essential ingredients for local government. Roger is the present, and first, County Councillor for Ivybridge and has a proven record of community involvement including the promotion of youth sport and activities in the town. When first elected to represent Ivybridge at County Hall, Roger set out three major pledges: 1) A new modern Library – opened 2010; 2) Stop Ivybridge waste going to damaging landfill – achieved 2015; 3) A new modern recycling centre – opened 1st March 2017. A Promise of Action – A Record of Delivery! extra houses that the Government and local council are forcing upon Ivybridge. ‘If you don’t want all these new houses then don’t vote for the status quo.’ Laurel is also very disappointed by the extra cuts to local schools. If elected she would vote to reverse the Conservative cuts by taking money from the £2 million public relations budget and stopping renting meeting rooms outside of County owned properties. Laurel is a supporter of the Green Liberal Democrats.

step, at my public ‘surgeries’ and when visiting sheltered accommodation in town and it is clear that many people never have any contact with their councillors. This has to change! It is a duty of elected representatives to listen to all residents. Devon County Council is currently politically unbalanced and so does not properly represent all views. It is time for change. If elected, I pledge to engage in a more active way with residents, to work hard on their behalf, and to speak out strongly for Ivybridge.

DEVON COUNTY COUNCIL

Election On 4th May you have the chance to vote for the person to represent Ivybridge on Devon County Council. Here, the candidates say why you should send them to County Hall Polling stations – open between 7am and 10pm – are at: Stowford School, Exeter Road; Ivybridge Leisure Centre, Leonards Road; Woodlands Park Primary School, Abbot Road; Bittaford Community Hall.

PHIL PICTON Green Party I am 42, married, a father of one and stepdad to three more. Originally from Blackpool, I’ve lived in Devon for most of my life. I began my working life in computers, then I switched direction and became a chef. I worked in some good kitchens at home and abroad, owned my own restaurant, and an ethical street food business. Now I’m a dad I work part-time as a freelance web developer, giving me the freedom to work from home here in Ivybridge. IAN ROSS UKIP I work locally as a defence industry engineer, after periods in the power, oil and gas sectors and the Royal Navy. I am married and have lived in the Ivybridge area since 1987. • I want to reintroduce genuine, properly-funded care for our most needy and vulnerable and our local schools. • I will always vote against greenfield development, and strongly press the case for affordable housing for local people. • Where decisions have a large

For fun I like walking our dog in our lovely countryside, cross country running, playing the guitar (badly), going to gigs, and most of all spending time with my family. I am an environmentalist and a strong believer in evidence-based policy making and progressive politics. I consider myself a European, and speak German. I’m not a natural politician but if elected I’ll speak up fiercely for all of my community, small businesses and environment. One Green voice can achieve a lot, given a chance. Please check out our manifesto on our website. community impact such as the new build developments, I will fight for local referenda. This way, the real democratic voice of Local People, not just remote elitist Council cabinet committee members, is heard. • UKIP is the only party not employing a party whip system, and I am always encouraged to vote in line with the wishes of local constituents. • I will oppose the current ongoing reduction of central spending to local government. This passes unsustainable escalating costs to local council tax payers. Under Conservative policies we are all paying more and more for less and less.

SUCCESS FOR ERME WI

Erme WI has enjoyed a string of successes in recent weeks. They received top marks at the group meeting when members won the Anstice Cup for their beading work. At the county meeting in Torquay, Pam Ashby won the writing competition with her story, Sunrise to Sunset, which the judges said was “outstanding”. Pam received an attractive silver cup in front of 1,000 fellow WI members. And the quiz team came a creditable 6th in the Devon Federation quiz competition final. Erme WI goes from strength-tostrength and following the AGM, president Sheila Hancox said they were looking forward to another busy year.

“IT’S ALL ABOUT TIME”

Pat Boundy’s demonstration for members of Ivybridge Flower Club at the April meeting was “It’s all about time” – the time of the year; the herb, thyme; holiday time; ancient times; and the second time around. Her designs were varied and the materials used beautifully conditioned and Pat, an area demonstrator from Holsworthy, explained how she decided on her titles and the stories behind them as she constructed her 6

THE TICKING OF TIME Since we first started writing The Clay Factory Diaries we have learnt many things. Just how lucky we are to have such a good relationship with The Ivybridge magazine is one, what high regard the local community has for our historic building is another. But if there is one thing we’ve learnt more than anything else, it is just how quickly time passes.

PROBUS CLUB

A small party of members of Ivybridge Probus Club and their wives set sail for a visit to Brittany at the end of March. After a perfect crossing (and completing the formalities of checking in at the hotel) the party went on a sightseeing stroll round Roscoff, which was looking splendid in the early spring sun. The market town of Morlaix and it fabulous fish market was the first visit on the group’s Saturday itinerary. After an open-air lunch, the party then visited the Exotic and Botanical Gardens of Roscoff. On the Sunday and Monday the party explored Carentec and the Bay of Lannion with its beautiful beaches, quaint Brittany houses and cottages and stunning vistas The club’s April meeting was held at The Rose & Crown in Yealmpton. This was the third of the three venues the club was trying out before making a decision on its future ‘home’ for the monthly lunches. After an excellent lunch, it was announced that there would be an email poll of members to decide the new venue. The outcome of the poll is that the meetings will be shared between The Rose & Crown and Wranga-

ton Golf Club, with the bi-monthly speakers coming to The Rose & Crown as it is better suited to presentations. Mike Fletcher announced that the annual race day outing would be to Newton Abbott on 16th June. The next meeting is at The Rose & Crown on Tuesday, 9th May. ¢ Contact secretary Bob Mailing on 01752 892255

I remember sitting typing away as the wind bellowed through the rafters and we very confidently informed you of our plans to launch The Clay Factory in 2017. Before we knew it, the days have rolled by and well... here we are. The building work is nearly done, we’ve had our first art exhibition of the year and all the components are nearly there to enable us to introduce The Clay Factory in its newest guise to the local community. It is a nearly but not quite moment. The plan is still the same, to open the doors in July for a string of open days and events, but we’re still just a whisker away from being able to share our plans with you properly. But fear not, we still have lots going on to take us to July. On 6th May we,re hosting PetFest, which is shaping up to be a brilliant day for adults, children and four-legged friends alike. There will be pet-related stalls, pet workshops, canine massage and dog shows. Time will continue to tick away and in these busy times it can feel like such a bad thing but the plus point is that we’ll be talking with you again very soon, with more exciting news to share about our July events. PetFest is on Saturday, 6th May, 10am-5pm. Any general enquires regarding The Clay Factory can be sent to enquiries@ thecatandthebox.co.uk

Reasons to vote for Tony Rea on 4 May  Tony is local and can properly represent Ivybridge people. He has lived in Ivybridge since 1999 having moved here from Bittaford. In the past Tony served as an Ivybridge Town Councillor and Governor of Ivybridge Community College.  Tony is a family man and if elected will strive to get a better deal for children and families in Ivybridge.  Tony listens to you. He has knocked on doors, held surgeries and visited residents in sheltered accommodation. Tony says: “If elected, I promise I will continue to keep in touch with residents, listen to them and speak out strongly for all of them.”  Tony is a knowledgeable, experienced and determined candidate who will put the people of Ivybridge first.  Only Labour can remove the Conservatives in Ivybridge and so provide a strong voice for the town at County Hall. Labour has consistently been runner up here and is now fielding the strongest candidate. Remember, a protest vote is a wasted vote. Printed by Warners Midlands PLC. Promoted by Sarah Puleston on behalf of Tony Rea, both at the Old Post Office, Bond Street, Cornwood PL21 9QE Tony Rea - Labour May17.indd 1 twitter: @Ivybridgemag \\ facebook: @TheIvybridgemagazine \\ theivybridgemagazine.co.uk \\ 07516 539573 | 01752 426522

After the show the children and staff enjoyed a drink and biscuit with the residents. The children are keen to share their talents, and are looking forward to more live performances planned for the summer term.

ON A MISSION

Happiness is something we all strive for in our lives says Claire Morgan-Hughes We all want to feel fulfilled and happy with our lives, whether it’s family, fitness, body or emotions. Yet sometimes the way we feel gets in the way of our happiness. The way we feel in our clothes. The way we feel when we go to work, when we go out or even with our partners. It can bring you down and that’s when we often resort to the foods and habits we know won’t help. Many of us would like to make positive changes in our life so that we can feel happier, but it can be difficult to do it alone. This is just one of the reasons why Devon Fit Camp isn’t your ordinary fitness classes. At DFC, there’s no judgement – just support by the bucket load on all aspects of your health, fitness and mindset. It can be tough to start on a journey to be a better, happier you, but rest assured making that decision and then taking the first step is the hardest bit! If you would like to take control

wellness ARE YOUR FEET READY FOR SUMMER? Are your feet embarrassing? Do you have dry, cracked heels? If so, read on says Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry Dry, cracked heels are a fact of life for some people, but they needn’t be. Every summer when the sandals come out your feet start to dry out and split. Every step you take becomes painful as the crack deepens and bleeds, but it doesn’t have to be this way... It’s all about the physics really. The skin needs to be soft, supple and stretch sufficiently when you step on it to avoid cracking. In the winter, enclosed shoes will help retain some of the natural water in the skin, however sandals will do the opposite and allow them to dry out. Also, the enclosed heel of a winter shoe will help to contain the spread of the fatty pad under your heel and prevent it from stretching too far and splitting. Risk factors for cracked heels include diabetes, excess weight, harsh soaps, long hot baths, dry

skin, dehydration and scrubbing feet dry. It is important to treat the cracked skin, because infections can develop in the wound and they will be painful. So what can we do about it? First, it’s important to regularly remove any hard skin to reveal the new soft flexible skin underneath. If you can reach comfortably, you can use a manual foot file or diamond deb nail file to gently sand away the hard skin – this is best done when the skin is dry. Alternatively, visit me at Abbey Road Podiatry and I can painlessly remove it for you. Keeping the skin hydrated is important, too. I can supply specialist foot creams not available on the high street at very competitive rates and also teach you how to use them effectively. So, take care of your feet and enjoy your summer. THE PAIN OF LOSS IS UNIMAGINABLE By Yvonne and Diane of Ivy Counselling / Brighter Futures

Grieving is natural Princes William and Harry have recently shared how difficult it has been, and still is, to come to terms with the loss of their mother. We welcomed this, as all too often when someone has lost a loved one after a few months it seems people forget, expecting the griever to get on with life and move on. The truth is, life will never be the same. There are many stages of grief, and it’s not unusual to move from

one to another and revert back several times. Grieving is natural and it is something that needs to be experienced in order to come to the stage of acceptance. Difficulties arise when grief is suppressed. The fact is, it doesn’t go away. As Prince Harry admitted, it can manifest and lead to unrecognised behaviours as a means of distraction. How long someone grieves is different for all. It’s not about getting over a loss but learning to live without that person. Engaging in grief counselling can be emotionally painful but a relief at the same time. It can help you to come to terms with the reality of the loss, be an opportunity to celebrate the person’s life and shed a light on the future. If you have experienced a loss and are feeling isolated as it appears everyone else is moving on Ivy Counselling are here to help.

Schools – facts and funding I thought I would start this month by sharing some facts on Devon’s schools and the way they are funded. There are 366 primary and secondary schools in Devon – 250 local authority maintained schools, 7 free schools and 109 academies – with just over 91,000 children. School funding comes from the Dedicated Schools Grant direct to DCC from central Government – in 2016/17 it was £462million, rising to about £477million in 2017/18. The money is pass-ported through DCC and out to the schools. The funding is made up of three main blocks – Early Years, the Main Block and High Needs Block. The HNB is under constant, extreme pressure because of the rise in children with Special Edu-

COUNTYMATTERS By Ivybridge’s County Councillor Roger Croad cational Needs (SEN). It is worth noting that over 50% of children in the High Needs Block attend mainstream schools and the vast majority of the remainder attend Devon special schools. Central Government is currently consulting on fair funding for schools. The current proposal would mean that 129 of our schools would lose money, mainly secondary schools, affecting 6 in 10 children. Despite intense lobbying by DCC, resulting in an additional £16million in 2015/16, we are still £290 per child lower than the national average! You are invited to join Devon County

JOIN A COMMUNITY BIKE RIDE Following on from its recent successful community cycle events, sustainability group PL:21 has joined with Sustrans and neighbouring Sustainable South Brent for a series of guided bike rides over the next couple of months. The first of these is on Sunday, 14th May, and will visit Hannahs

in Ivybridge. Ride leader Graham Wilson said: “We are hoping for fine weather as Hannah residents hope to meet the cyclists and have a picnic together. Although the ride

Energy from Waste (EfW) I took great pleasure in opening the Energy from Waste facility in Plymouth last year, so bringing to an end landfill for Ivybridge waste; the facility takes in the town’s entire household grey bin contents. After the first full year in operation, the facility is now generating around 190,000 megawatt hours of electricity, much of which is exported to the National Grid, and

starts in South Brent, we encourage Ivybridge people to join us too.” The guided ride on Sunday, 4th June, is a challenge ride of 50 miles, and climbs over 5,000ft. At an easy pace, it will discover some of Dartmoor’s finest scenery, ranging from hidden river valleys, ancient woodlands, and will cross the high moors. There is a choice of starts: The Watermark, Ivybridge, at 9am or The

the heat generated is delivered to HM Naval Base Devonport by form of steam, mainly for heating purposes. This has replaced two gas-based boilers, thereby cutting CO2 emissions by around 77,000 tonnes per annum. Landfill of household waste has been in operation across the country for many years and has proved to be extremely damaging to the environment as well as becoming very expensive – these sites will be producing Methane gas and leachate into water courses for many years to come and require constant maintenance and supervision. Another major plus for the EfW facility is the saving of £13.4 million to date.

PROBATE. WHY IS IT NEEDED? WHEN IS IT NEEDED? By Monica Salvioni Reeder – Operations & Client Services at Richardsons Legal Services

Although Probate is not a legal requirement, in practice, when the time comes, it has to be obtained in the majority of cases to allow the executors to distribute the estate according to the Will. Where there is a property, either singly owned, or owned jointly as Tenancy in Common, or where there is a Trust within the Will, Probate is essential before the estate can be distributed. The amounts banks are willing to release without Probate varies, generally between £20-30,000. Accounts with balances more than this, held in the deceased’s sole name, are frozen and locked until Probate is obtained. A joint account doesn’t necessarily mean that Probate is not needed. If it was only set up for convenience – so that a spouse/child could pay the bills – and if one of the parties doesn’t pay money into, or take

money out of, the account it will be considered a sole account, frozen and Probate will be needed before the money is released. Probate will also involve income tax and inheritance tax returns, and being able to possibly take advantage of a transferable nil rate band inheritance tax allowance. This means that when a person passes away, providing that person has left everything to his/her spouse, there will be no inheritance tax to be paid on first death, but, when the surviving spouse passes away, there will be inheritance tax to pay if the estate amounts to more than £650,000. Failing to complete Probate paperwork correctly could be very expensive in the future, as the transferable allowance could be lost if not done properly. Interestingly, if you put property, such as your home, or cash savings or shares in a trust no probate is needed. For further information contact Richardsons Legal Services on 0800 0148031. RLS are fully qualified, insured and regulated.

MONEY MATTERS with Ivybridge Accountants Ltd Do company cars still work? Simon Jilks investigates

With the recent changes in how new cars are taxed, perhaps it’s time to consider if your company car still works for you. It hugely depends on how much private use you have. If you have very little, then it is more likely the tax on a company car outweighs the benefit. By the way, driving a car to work constitutes private use, so even if you don’t use it outside of this, then you are still caught by the rules unfortunately. So, which cars work? The system is currently favourable towards low CO2 rated cars, so lower the better. Of course, fully electric cars are the best option. For example, a Nissan Leaf with a list price of £31,335 could equate to only £564 tax charge for an entire year (2017/18 rates). Furthermore, for the company itself all

of the cost of the car can attract tax relief, so potentially saving around £6,000 off the company’s tax bill. Hybrids are also a very viable option, such as a Mitsubishi Outlander, with a list price of £34,250, it is still only £617 a year in tax. I would express caution, however, as the government is increasing the amount of tax on company cars over the next three years. I would not dismiss the use of vans, including double cab pick-ups, as these, too, can prove quite tax efficient; a Nissan Navara, for instance, can be a good alternative for an SUV-type vehicle, currently attracting annual tax of £646 a year. As a commercial vehicle, corporation tax relief can be gained by the company and the VAT is reclaimable. However, do ensure these vehicles do qualify as a van if you are considering this route. In short, yes, company cars can still work, but for how long...

Calan

Fiddles, guitar, accordion, bagpipes and step dancing explode into life when CALAN, the energetic young folk band from Wales, take to the stage at The Watermark on Friday, 12 May. They breathe fire into the old traditions with their infectious rhythms and high voltage routines before melting into some of the most beautiful and haunting songs as they explore the legends of Wales’ very own fairy realm with tales of magic, myth and mischief. Calan will be supported by Dan Wilde, who has been performing his own brand of richly observant folk both in the UK and around the world for the past five years. In that time, he’s developed a growing fan base and a reputation among those who know as “a fantastic song-writing talent who without doubt will deserve and demand your attention” (Eclectically Challenged). Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council SOCIAL PRESCRIBING

It is a good time now, too, with the warmer weather producing some cracking displays of bluebells out on the moor, like the one near Dendles below.

Community RANGERS

We have now finished GPS mapping the winter burns (swales) which are available to Natural England, and help provide a picture of the moorland vegetation management. Properly carried out, swaling promotes the growth of young heather and is important for maintaining moorland habitats. We are also carrying out random path surveys to look at the percentage of paths that can be classified as ‘easy to use’. This gives us the chance to visit other areas of the park and look at public rights of way with fresh eyes and record the condition of the routes. Random path surveys are carried out in May and also in November. All 500 miles of public rights of way on Dartmoor are surveyed bi-annually (as a minimum), and we are normally assisted with this task by volunteers. Do come and join us for a ‘two minute litter pick’ on Sunday, 14th May. We will be starting at 10.30am in Shipley Bridge car park and walking up the bridleway. The board and litter-pickers are available in the car park for anyone to do their ‘two minutes’. Don’t be part of the problem – be part of the solution! Now that the weather should be improving it is a perfect time to explore the great outdoors. If you plan to camp on Dartmoor, please strongly consider using a recognised camp site. If you are intending to camp out on the moor, please take time to look at our information and advice, including our bye-laws, and be well prepared. Check our website for information or contact one of our visitor centres. Have fun in the sun! Ella and Andrea

In our January 2017 newsletter we mentioned that we were working with the health and voluntary sector to deliver a new role to Ivybridge, that of social prescriber. We are delighted that Karen Highfield (pictured) will be our first social prescriber. Based at Ivybridge Health Centre, she starts on Monday, 15th May, and you could find yourself being referred to her by your GP if you need help with matters other than treatment for your medical condition. Karen will be able to offer information on local groups who can help with your situation, and signpost you to people with the knowledge to give you support. Karen will be attending the Health and Lifestyle Fayre on 13th May at The Watermark, so please introduce yourself to her. Equally, if you run a local group which offers advice and support linked to health and well-being, then please let us have your details so we can ensure that those who can benefit from the assistance within Ivybridge are able to access it.

YOUTH SERVICES We are at the early stages of investigating whether a youth café, operating with the churches as part of the Redeeming our Community (ROC) organisation, could open in the Ivybridge Youth Venue one evening a week. To make this succeed we will need volunteers to come forward who want to offer this opportunity to young people, and potentially be willing to take youth service training if needed and undergo CRB checks. COMRADESHIP REMEMBRANCE WELFARE The Ivybridge branch of The Royal British Legion has had a relatively quiet period, focusing mainly on providing the standard for funerals and memorial events. This included for a Russian sailor who died in Plymouth during WWI and the dedication of a headstone for the grave of a young sailor who served in the first and died in the 2nd World War. Members have also been working at Harry’s Patch, smartening it up ready for spring. In the background, welfare visits to veterans have continued. The Ivybridge branch meet on the second Wednesday of each month in The Sportsman’s Inn. Forthcoming events are discussed, followed by a short social, the occasional raffle and usually some inter-service banter. RBL members participate in a wide range of events, including commemoration events, the Lions Fun Day and many social events. Upcoming events include: Wednesday, 10th May – Branch meeting, The Sportman’s Inn, 7.30pm. Wednesday, 14th June – Falklands 35 commemoration event
