sure sign that autumn is upon us is when the children start going back to school. I am sure all the parents among you still remember vividly the day your child started school – I certainly do! It is a time of many and mixed emotions – apprehension, worry, yes, but also pride as you watch as they file into class, smart and smiling (there are some tears sometimes too!) to embark on their school life. To celebrate what is a special occasion for parents, the children and the staff at our primary schools, this issue carries the first of the Class of 2011 photos (page 20), lovely class photos of some of the boys and girls who have started school for the first time this new academic year. how Ivybridge can benefit more from tourism as a way to boost the town. The town council’s tourism group, which is chaired by deputy mayor Chris Childs, incudes representatives from the council, the Chamber of Commerce and the Ivybridge Regeneration Group. Its inaugural meeting in August highlighted the need for a hotel, or hotels, in the

town, more restaurants and improved signage in the town and at the station. The group was told of exciting new developments at The Watermark, which would allow big screen entertainment more nights, and about discussions which are underway to expand and improve facilities at the leisure centre. The tourism group also set out its goal to increase the number of day visitors, weekenders and walkers coming to Ivybridge. • If you have any comments or expertise to contribute, the group would like to hear from you. Send them to the town council, marked Tourism.

Have your say on town development proposals IVYBRIDGE TOWN COUNCIL and South Hams District Council are preparing a programme of community events for two proposed Ivybridge developments. Working with representatives from the local community and other key groups, the councils are assisting with the progress of the masterplans for the town centre and the area to the east of Ivybridge. Masterplanning workshops and public meetings are due to be held in November.

Library hours are cut AS REPORTED in the August issue of The Ivybridge magazine, the opening hours of the town’s library are being reduced from October. The new times, which come into effect from Monday, 3 October, see the library opening 30 minutes earlier in the mornings, but it will be closed all day on Wednesdays and

will shut an hour earlier on Mondays and Thursdays. The changes, which are part of Devon County Council cost-cutting plans, have been made after a study of when people preferred to use the library. A Christmas invitation from the mayor LAST YEAR, for the first time, the town council hosted a Christmas Day event in The Watermark for elderly people and for those who would otherwise be on their own on this special day. The event was magnificently supported, with over 50 guests treated to entertainment and a mouth-watering festive lunch, and volunteer hosts appointed to each table to ensure that everyone was looked after royally. All the guests had a marvellous time and we were truly touched by the lovely letters and cards of thanks received. Having witnessed the genuine enjoyment of our guests there was no way we could let that event be just a one-off. Therefore, it’s my absolute pleasure to extend the Town Council’s warm invitation to those who are elderly and alone to spend their Christmas Day at The Watermark. We will again, of course, need the help of the wonderful community here in Ivybridge to ensure this year’s event is as special as before – businesses may like to make donations or individuals or groups might like to consider volunteering on the day to help with serving our guests, giving lifts etc. Similarly, if you are a musician or other performer you may wish to give of your time on the day to entertain our guests. If you or someone you know is dreading the thought of a solo Christmas Day then please do get in touch. To book a place contact the Town Hall on (01752) 893815. Happy first birthday for popular shop LIME SQUARE Gallery and Giftware in Glanvilles Mill celebrates its first anniversary this October. To mark its first year of trading, and to thank everyone for their support, they are running a special draw during the month. Customers will get a free draw ticket for every purchase over £10 during October 2011, and on 1 November the draw will be made to see who has won a specially-commissioned piece of fused glass of Ivybridge (or £25 in vouchers). For Mark and Jan, owners of Lime Square, the venture (or even adventure) was a bit of a step into the unknown but they both had a vision of what they wanted to accomplish and believe they are someway to achieving it. “We would never have guessed a year ago we would be celebrating our first year of business but here we are and what a year it has been.” Mark says: “Since the doors opened, there is not a day that goes by when someone doesn’t make a positive, complimentary remark. From the ‘wow, what beautiful and unusual things you have’ to ‘what a bright, uncluttered and airy space’.”

Word has also spread about what Lime Square has to offer and it attracts customers from Plympton, Plymstock and Plymouth, to name a few places. Mark and Jan are constantly looking for new and unusual items and, as regular customers and passersby will know, they frequently change the window display to show off the latest additions. The exhibitions are regularly changed, too, which adds to the constant development and updating of what Lime Square has to offer.

Make the parents pay Dear Editor – In response to the article in September’s issue, “Parents must take responsibility”, I find it shocking and disturbing that children of these young ages were found in this state. Having chatted about this subject with many friends, our observation is that it is more of “those with” than “those without” that cause these problems. Just take a look at the irresponsible and erratic driving that some of the teenage car owners do in the evening. This is not about unemployment or lack of things to do. They are too young to work and they have more on offer today than ever before. Some are just too lazy to take opportunities given at taxpayers’ expense and volunteers’ time. Libraries, youth

clubs, parks, after school clubs, summer clubs, Scouts, 10 Tors, Duke of Edinburgh scheme, Air Cadets, allotments, fishing lake. Or what about the moors or the beach? I have to disagree that the main cause of drinking-related problems are due to cheap alcohol. It is without a doubt that these people will still do what they do, irrespective of cost. Cheap beer? I don’t see why I can’t enjoy a beer or two at a reasonable price without feeling guilt that I’ve somehow contributed to the actions of some reprobate or the collapse of someone’s marriage because they’ve beaten up their family, or that our town has become littered and vandalised. Could we not make the parents pay for the wrongdoing of their children? That would be good. Seeing parents clean up the mess by doing community service in their neighbourhood, in a bright tabard with “my children misbehave” blazened across it. Oh, the very thought... PLANS FOR a new swimming pool in Ivybridge have been abandoned by South Hams District Council (SHDC). The need for better swimming facilities in the town was identified by SHDC’s own district-wide swim study in April 2008, which recommended the provision of a six lane, 25 metre pool. But following the consideration of a report on the leisure centre and swimming pool at a recent meeting, and citing the current financial situation, SHDC has now abandoned the quest for an improved swimming pool. Following its 2008 study, the council had allocated £1million in its capital budget towards the provision of a new pool, but the balance of £1.5 million had to be raised through other avenues. As this additional money could not be raised, the plans never left the drawing board. The meeting did recognise, however, that the leisure centre needed considerable investment to meet the needs of the community. The executive decided to retain the current capital allocation of £1million as a financial contribution to support an alternative proposal to enhance the

It will authorise the development of a new proposal to be formulated in partnership with Tone Leisure and submitted to a future meeting of the executive for approval, and will review other possible opportunities that may emerge following the outcome of the Ivybridge Masterplanning process this autumn. cility is pretty poor and completely inadequate for a town of this size. Perhaps if the council had shown more urgency at the time its own report said the town needed a better pool, they wouldn’t have had the convenience of the current financial situation to drop the plans.” South Hams District Council said that, by committing £1million to improving the overall leisure facility, it clearly has an ongoing commitment to leisure services in Ivybridge.

Winter weather volunteers wanted THE RECENT severe winters have highlighted just how poorly prepared the town was to deal with adverse winter weather. To try and change this, the town council has signed up to a community self-help initiative with Devon County Council (DCC). It is designed to help people work together in preparing for, and coping with, winter weather. A first step has been the appoint-

ment of two snow wardens, Cllr Dave Gray-Taylor and council groundsman Andy Harman-Taylor, who are now keen to recruit a team of volunteers. ids, and kids-at-heart, turned into intrepid explorers when they set off in Longtimber Woods for the PL:21 Forest School. The group braved lashing rain as they started the day with a leaf identification walk, where the youngsters discovered and named a wide range of tree species. Other notable finds were a pigeon egg shell, a badger skull, various fungi and a number of edible plants. On arrival at base camp, a number of temporary shelters were hastily erected, using rope and tarps. The group quickly found shelter and tucked into biscuits and snacks. They also enjoyed reading Stick Man, by Julia Donaldson, under their cosy shelters and talked about the many uses of wood and sticks. They cre-

Due to the success of the Forest School days more are planned for the October half-term. ated their own stick people, which came in many shapes and sizes, by whittling a space for faces and then dressing them with recycled materials, sourced from the Plymouth Play Association. The kids (and grown ups, too) showed great imagination and creativity to create a diverse community of stick people. As the rain steadily got heavier, it was time to warm up. Using the Kelly kettle, they toasted marshmallows, which were described as “delicious, yummy and amazing”. They heated water to make a much-needed hot chocolate and the children hunted for plums that had been hidden in the woods. The group then put their hot chocolate 12

October events: cups to good use by creating magic potions on the return journey to the viaduct. The youngsters found various water sources and explored them as they collected different natural colours and textures for their potions. Names were created for spells and then poured onto the trees with a magic wish for the future... let’s hope some of the wishes come true and that these young people create paths to help us sustain our woodlands for future generations to come.

Concert and supper evening One of Britain’s leading violinists will be giving a recital of works by Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelssohn and Smetena at a special evening at Lukesland House, Harford, Ivybridge. Curtain goes up for Impressive imposed theatre company’s demonstration next act IVYBRIDGE THEATRE Company (ITC) returned to normal activities in September after a two-week break with play reading, social events and a get-together with members new and ‘old’ (in the best possible sense!) and all the cast of the forthcoming pantomime. Rehearsals for Snow White get underway this month so members are turning their attention to line learning; performances take place from 16-18 February 2012, at The Watermark. Black Ivy Mysteries are once again performing at the splendid Glazebrook Country House Hotel, South Brent. AT THEIR first meeting following the summer break, members of Ivybridge Flower Club were treated to a demonstration with a difference. Fiona Hammond, area demonstrator from Cornwall, did an imposed demo – that is, members of the club committee provide a large selection of different containers and accessories, together with a selection of fruits, flowers and foliage. Fiona arrived an hour and a half before the start of the meeting and created a fantastic display of traditional and contemporary exhibits from the items presented for her use. To arrange five or six designs, using plant materials and containers which you provide is hard enough, but to arrive at a destination, not knowing the type of materials or even how much has been provided for your use is more than somewhat daunting. • Details were confirmed for the forthcoming visit to the NAFS National Exhibition at the Riviera Centre, Torquay, on 23 September. • Next month’s meeting will be the AGM. Aegean qualifies for Worlds

Sir Francis Drake sails into Stowford THE ELIZABETHAN ERA and culture was sat down to eat! brought to life at Stowford School when Sir Francis and Lady Drake visited Year 5 pupils. In full costume and with some authentic Tudor artefacts, they took the children back in time at the start of their new project. Sir Francis showed the children a variety of items from Tudor times, including a French sword of the kind used to dispatch Anne Boleyn, for specific use only on those with royal blood, some armour and a variety of battle swords. He explained how his dagger served not only as a weapon but also as his cutlery, although he did stress that it should be thoroughly cleaned after use in battle before you

The fascinated children then got the opportunity to handle some of the weapons and try on the armour, as well as learning some unusual facts, such as Tudor ladies wore no underwear. Sir Francis explained that we know this because a Spanish Ambassador in Elizabethan times wrote a letter home explaining how, during energetic court dances, the ladies bottoms were briefly on display. Year 5 teacher Joe Baxter said: “At the start of our new project, it provided an opportunity to allow the children to experience the Tudor period “firsthand” and they were really engaged throughout the visit. It was a fantastic way to start our topic.”

A YEAR 5 pupil from Stowford Primary School is set to represent Great Britain in the Biathle World Championships in Bulgaria at the end of September. Aegean Bramley qualified for the GB squad after finishing sixth at the National Biathle Championships, held in Manchester in August. Biathle is a combined discipline sport. For Aegean’s age group, the event starts with a 500m run, followed by a 50m swim, which can be in a swimming pool or open water, before running another 500m to the finish. Aegean took part in the National Biathle Championships along with her older brother, Travis, and her dad, who also qualified for inclusion in the GB team, so the family will travel to Sofia, Bulgaria, to compete in the World Championships on 25 September. Aegean’s dad, Mark, said: “With three of the family set to represent Great Britain, Aegean’s mum is now under severe pressure to take up the sport, although she is at present content with a managerial and supportive role!” October 2011 THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE

Advice service extends help

Methodists have new music-loving minister A SPECIAL musical service, including an orchestra performance from the various musicians within the church, welcomed the new minister to Ivybridge Methodist Church. The Rev Ralph Ward conducted his first service on Sunday, 4 September, and was officially welcomed to the church with an evening service the following Wednesday. Ralph entered the church in 1993 and has been a minister for 15 years, firstly in Lancashire and latterly for 10 years at the Methodist church in Verwood, near Wimbourne, Dorset. Before joining the church he was a professional musician, and after getting involved in Christian music he worked to promote faith and music to young people and children. Since moving to Ivybridge in August, Ralph, 51, and his wife Adele have been heartened by the extremely warm welcome they have received from the community as a whole. As well as music, Ralph’s other interests include walking, swimming and mountain biking, and he is delighted that his new surroundings will give him so many opportunities to pursue his leisure interests, especially with the moor so easily accessible.

Cadet scheme to fire youngsters imaginations A FREE SCHEME aimed at youngsters aged 13-17 years who wish to learn about the role of a fire fighter in the community and to join a uniformed youth organisation to develop themselves has started in Ivybridge. Fire Cadets is based on the job of a fire fighter and includes using fire hoses, climbing ladders, operating fire pumps, first aid and dealing with mock emergencies. Youngsters are issued with a polo shirt and black trousers (to keep) and a replica fire fighting uniform on loan for use during training activities. THE CITIZENS Advice Bureau (CAB) has expanded its indemand drop-in service at The Watermark after receiving funding from the town council’s localism budget. Every Monday morning CAB will now be offering a two-hour drop-in service between 10am to 12 noon, as well as appointments by arrangement throughout the afternoon. The drop-in service has the flexibility to be increased to three hours if demand requires it. A drop-in session provides an initial 10 minute assessment, allowing CAB to diagnose your problem and arrange for the appropriate follow up with an experienced adviser when needed. Take BETTER PHOTOS More tips on how to improve the images you take using your digital camera from David Rayner of Ivybridge & District Camera Club

CAPTURING TIME is one good way of describing what photography does. Every picture we take captures a slice of time, but even so, we don’t always have the skill to make best use of the wonderful ability our camera has to depict movement, passage of time, time of day or even the seasons. Action shots are frequently how we see time represented in our photographs; the footballer’s foot on the ball, or the splash of the diver for example. Scene modes for action shots found on many cameras optimise the settings so as to keep the shutter speed high to freeze the action. Clever cameras on scene mode also monitor subject movement and readjust the shutter speed slightly lower, in order to capture a small blur so that the subject does not look 24

like a cut-out. Many cameras have an S (or Tv) setting allowing you to decide the shutter speed, and it’s easy to experiment to find an interesting photo. But however we set the camera, for action shots the skill is frequently in pressing the shutter button at the right moment. Frustratingly, many compact cameras have an appreciable time lag between pressing the shutter and actually taking the picture, so the ‘action’ is missed! Clearly, one tip is to anticipate the action. Another tip is to pre-focus on the place the action is going to happen. Most of the shutter ‘lag’ is in achieving focus; so if you have the shutter button half pressed down already, that part of the photo-taking is already done. When you complete

the press of the shutter there will be minimal delay. Finally, if we want high shutter speeds we should ideally be looking for welllit subjects and a bright day, but if you are adventurous you may increase your ISO setting. One of the pleasing types of ‘time’ photography is when the camera records and suggests events we can’t see with our eyes. The photo above could easily be called the Mists of Time, as although the camera has recorded a point in time on a foggy Dartmoor afternoon; it has also recorded the flow of water over the rocks in a rather pleasant way that we can’t see with our eyes. The old clapper bridge also suggests an era in the mists of time when this was a pathway over the river. Slowing down time in a

photo requires a slow shutter speed; so slow that the camera must be rested on a tripod or a rock or something equally solid. You might not have a scene mode for this but ‘fireworks’ should do. Otherwise you should opt for the lowest ISO and the highest aperture number on the A (aperture priority) setting. Finally, turn off your flash – or cover it up. A bonus is that the lower the light levels the better, so foggy days (or nights) are ideal. Waterfalls are often under tree cover and that helps reduce the light level too. Autumn is with us already and misty days and earlier dusk can be wonderful times to get creative with your cameras, so don’t let me hear you say the weather is too bad to take photos, especially in this wonderful part of Devon!

Harriers duo rise to challenge ERME VALLEY HARRIERS’ annual Beacon Challenge Race on 11 September set competitors a very challenging course covering around 7.5 miles of woodland and moorland paths, including the ascent of Western Beacon. The dry and windy conditions were much better than had been anticipated, with the forecast rain thankfully holding off. The race was won by Arran Tocknell, of Torbay AC, in a time of 53.56. The Harriers’ duo of Ben Trigg and Matt Brown ran well. Trigg was 3rd in a time of 56.57 and Brown 8th in 59.10. A 1.5 mile family fun-run through Longtimber Woods took place alongside the main race, the proceeds of which will go to St Lukes Hospice. Next The Harriers now expect a large contingent to compete in the ‘6 Moor Miles’ in readiness for the forthcoming cross-country season. A group of athletes have also entered the New Forest Half and Full Marathons.

Internationally-recognised rockers Reef kicked off the 2011 Ivylive music festival at Filham Park with a entertaining headline set on the Friday night. Festival goers were in high spirits throughout the weekend as crowds up to 2,000 strong enjoyed a host of music, entertainment and activities. As well as the other headline acts The King Blues and Sandi Thom, local talent was showcased on a variety of stages. Groups performing included Mad Dog McCrea, The Computers, Cosmo Jarvis and The Skints. The festival attracted people of all ages, who not only enjoyed the bands but also a range of activities; the silent disco proved a very popular attraction, enabling the party to go on much later than in previous years.
