Your town, your view
I
thought August might see a bit of a lull for the magazine, due to holidays, but not a bit of it! This issue has even more great community news and well-written, unique features, all of which you have come to expect from the town’s real community magazine. More businesses are in the magazine too, so please support them, and all the town’s businesses, as much as you can.
PUBLISHER AND EDITOR Steven Vincent T: 08454 714413 M: 07773 293467 E: info@theivybridge magazine.co.uk www.facebook.com/ theivybridgemagazine TO ADVERTISE T: 08454 714413 E: advertising@the ivybridgemagazine. co.uk
New I am launching a couple of new sections in the magazine this month, which will enable you to get even more involved in the magazine. Firstly, I want your letters! What’s your view about issues facing the town? Does something really get you steamed up? Is there an unsung hero who deserves some recognition? If so, drop me a line – see page nine for details (and the house rules).
It’s about you I know from looking at the noticeboards as I walk around town that there are still clubs and groups not featured in the magazine. I am doing my best to contact them all, but if you are involved in such a group, in any way, please do get in touch. At the very least, if you can let me have a name and number of someone in the group who I can approach then that would be a great help. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I look forward to receiving your letters!

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD friends Eve McLoughlin said they were surprised that no one and Molly Weedon did a sponsored walk with a difference when they walked around Ivybridge in their pyjamas! They set off on a very soggy Saturday morning at the end of July, following a route they had planned themselves to include all parts of Ivybridge, with a short rest stop at Molly’s aunty’s house! The girls were not deterred by the wet weather, but were glad of a hot shower at the end! Molly said it was good fun and not too tiring, while Eve
asked them what they were doing out in their pyjamas! Both girls have just finished their first year at Ivybridge Community College and were keen to support the fundraising effort for the purchase and training of a guide dog in memory of teacher Rosie Goodridge, who tragically died last year. Eve and Molly raised about £130 for Guide Dogs for the Blind and would like to thank everyone who sponsored them.

are many unsung heroes whose work, often behind the scenes, is making an impact on people’s lives, and this is your chance to put them forward for this prestigious award. The winner of the award is the person whom the town council feel has made an invaluable contribution to the community. The criteria includes those who solely volunteer within the community and, as in previous years, the award does cover people living outside the town although they must have provided a service valued by people in Ivybridge.
upgrade the town’s telephone infrastructure ready for the launch of super-fast broadband this autumn. When the service goes live, the town’s 6,000 households and businesses will benefit from initial speeds of up to 40Mb/s, with BT announcing that it is working towards doubling the download speed on fibre broadband to 80Mb/s in 2012. The work is being carried out by Openreach, BT’s local network business, and is a wholesale service, which means you do not have to be a BT customer to benefit from the faster speeds. Super-fast speeds will enable home users to run multiple bandwidth-hungry applications at the same time, and for businesses the new network will underpin the introduction of many new services and applications.
How to nominate your local hero To nominate someone, write to Ivybridge Town Council, Erme Court, Leonards Road, Ivybridge, PL21 0SZ (or email the information to susanhocking@ivybridge.gov.uk) giving the person’s name, address and your reasons for putting them forward, and also include your own name and address. All entries must be received by Friday, 23 September, 2011. The nominations will be considered by the town council in October and the winner will be announced in late autumn.

Residents seek to secure field’s future PEOPLE LIVING near Macandrew’s Field have put together a list of ideas for how the field can be used for the good of the whole town now that the threat of redevelopment has been seen off. Around 40 people attended a public meeting at the field, which was organised by residents Alec Jones and Jo Burgess, where the ideas were aired. Suggestions included an adventure playground, picnic benches, a nature area, a pond and as a venue for events. Another idea proposed was whether the field be used to alleviate the chronic shortage of sports pitches for junior football and rugby teams in the town. 6
RIDERS OF all ages were keen to be the first to take on the challenge of the new dirt jumps at Filham Park when they were officially opened at the beginning of August. As well as the chance to try out the new, professionally-designed, layout, there was also a jam session, food and music. The work on the BMX track has been an ongoing project by local riders, with the help of local fire fighter Leigh Julyan. The new track is suitable for riders of all abilities as it has been designed with three lines, ranging from beginners through to intermediate to advanced. The cost of the work was in the region of £14,500 and was jointly funded by the town council, South Hams District Council and Devon County Council.
Ivybridge Masterplanning Development plans for the town were published by South Hams District Council in February, which identified areas suitable for development. These plans will need to go through a process called Masterplannning, which will give you the chance to have your say on the proposals. Lesley Hughes, the town clerk, explains the process The two key areas identified in the SHDC plan, which can be viewed on the district council website or at the Town Hall, was land around the park-and-ride site on the eastern side of Ivybridge and the central area of town. As the proposals envisage mixed use – housing, employment land, open space and other facilities – in both areas, they will need Masterplanning. To help with this process, the council applied to the Princes Foundation, an organisation given funding by the government to pilot Neighbourhood Planning as envisaged in the Localism Bill, for assistance. We were successful in our bid and the Foundation visited Ivybridge at the end of July to hold a scoping workshop to assess with landowners and representatives of key organisations whether there was enough interest and willingness to engage with this initiative. Fol-

low on from this, it was recommended that the Princes Foundation return to the town between 7 and 10 November to hold an ‘enquiry by design’ event looking at the two areas of the town. We are currently seeking advice about the best way to involve everyone in the development proposals. If, in the mean time, it is something you want to ensure you are consulted on, then please contact the town council (see details below) and leave your details so that we can keep your name on a list. It may be that we will need to circulate questionnaires before November and, with the support of The Ivybridge magazine, we will keep you informed. If you have any questions please contact me. Anti-social behaviour by groups of youths hanging around on the streets, or congregating in parks drinking, has been a long-running issue in the town. The Mayor, Cllr Trevor Parsons, joined the police on the beat on a Firday night to witness for himself the current situation
Parents must take responsibility hol on their behalf. “The appalling language used by some of these youths was disgusting, and I can see why people feel intimidated by this type of behaviour. “This is obviously a result of being under the influence of alcohol and I was advised by the police that three quarters of crime every month (assaults, domestic violence and damage) is alcohol-related.” Cllr Parsons stressed that the vast majority of youngsters do not get drunk and cause trouble, but that those who do are having a significant, negative impact on the town. Cllr Parsons had praise for the police. “I was very impressed with the professional way the police dealt with the situations I witnessed. Most of these
youths were known to them and were dealt with accordingly.” The damage to property and the amount of litter also shocked Cllr Parsons. “I was really concerned about the damage to park benches situated in Leonard’s Road and the amount of broken glass in various locations around the town. “I urge the parents of these youths to take responsibility for them and help combat this unacceptable behaviour, and start to instill pride in our town. “If I can be of any help please do not hesitate to contact me via the town hall on (01752) 893815.” Cllr Parsons patrolled with the police on Friday, 29 July, between 8.30pm and 1.30am.

CHILDREN AS young as 11years-old are routinely drinking alcohol on the streets of Ivybridge, and alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour is one of the most common incidents police have to deal with in the town. That was the shock finding of the Mayor, Cllr Trevor Parsons, when he patrolled the town with police on a Friday night in July. “It was certainly an eyeopener,” said Cllr Parsons. “There were a number of youths in the town who were under the influence of alcohol, some of them only about 11-15-years-old. “This is not the result of under-age drinking in pubs, this is clearly a consequence of cheap alcohol being bought in stores, and it would appear that adults are buying the alco-

Health centre site discussed

Market a hit
A MEETING has been held between the town council, the health centre and a landowner to consider whether there could be a site for a new health centre as part of the redevelopment of the eastern side of town (see page 6). A council source says the signs, so far, are promising but stressed that these are early days in the discussions.
New rail timetables RAIL TIMETABLES begin to change from 12 September. See our Facebook page for a downloadable version of the new schedule.
The Saturday morning Erme Court Market, held outside The Watermark, returned in August and has been such a hit, both with shoppers and traders, that it will run every Saturday until the
end of September. The mixed market, which has stalls selling Fairtrade goods, kitchenware, cosmetics and crafts, is on from 9am until 12.30pm.
Help for job seekers IVYBRIDGE TOWN COUNCIL has been approached by two organisations who are interested in providing training courses in Ivybridge, suitable for people both looking for work or who wish to enhance their range of skillsfor-life. Achievement Training are offering a nationally-accredited qualification starting at The Watermark on 20 September for 12 weeks (on Tuesdays and Thursdays) which is free of charge for anyone on Jobseekers Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance. The course includes customer service skills, health and safety in a practical environment, investigating a vocational area of interest and a practical activity which involves a Dragon’s Den-style project! The final two weeks take the form of a work placement. If you are interested, contact your JobCentre Plus Advisor or register with the Information Centre at The Watermark, tel (01752) 892220. 10

Skills-for-life Groundwork South West are interested in offering skills-for-life courses. These would be available to anyone aged over 19 and in most cases, if you are on state payments (and this includes benefits and pension), the courses should be free of charge. The council is trying to find out the interest in the community, so no dates have been set yet. These would again be offered at The Watermark and leaflets are available from the Information Centre. If you would like to find out more or sign up, call The Watermark (see number opposite).
Ivybridge Work Club For those looking for work, the Ivybridge Work Club is great source of help and advice. The club meets every Wednesday, from 10am until 12 noon, at The Watermark, and can help you with writing a CV and access to the internet. as well as general support. There are also regular speakers from JobCentre Plus, employment agencies and training providers. On Wednesday, 7 September, Sue Stoddard from Achievement Training will be talking about the qualification mentioned previously. Members of the Work Club are developing a website to advertise the club, plus it will offer links to other sites that people have found useful. One-to-one advice On Tuesdays, Fred Jenkins from Careers SW can offer one-to-one advice sessions (free of charge) to adults aged 19 and above, helping you to make choices about learning and work – again at The Watermark.

Beyond books

here is no doubt that the town has a fantastic library, but there is a group which is working to create a community facility that goes beyond the bounds of a traditional library. The Friends of Ivybridge Library was formed at the same time as the library moved to The Watermark. It is strongly committed to supporting the library and to raising the profile of the library in the community. It also organises a regular programme of literary and cultural events. The group has about 20 members, with a core committee of three-five people. It supports the work of the library with sponsorship and donations, and has in the past funded summer activities for children, bought a bean bag for young adult readers and helped fund Christmas decorations. Currently, members are helping catalogue the local history archive. “We are very proud of what we do, both in terms of supporting the li-
brary and in raising its profile with the events we have organised,” says Kathy Stockwin, chairman of the Friends’ group. “But there is no doubt that our small number does limit what we can achieve. “We are actively seeking additional Friends – people of all ages and backgrounds are welcome and there is no commitment, you can get involved as much or as little as your time allows. “We would very much like some representation on the committee from young people, so if anyone knows a teenager who fits the bill, do suggest to them that they get in touch. “We can offer valuable community service experience and would be happy to liaise with their school/college to document this.” At the moment, Kathy is busy making sure all the arrangements are in place for the group’s big autumn event, An evening with Ann Widdecombe. Cabinet Minister will hold forth in the library on Monday, 10 October, and the evening will include a talk, a question-and-answer session and a book signing. “We are extremely fortunate to have Ann coming,” says Kathy. “She is renowned for her forthright views on a range of subjects and will, I am sure, be an entertaining guest. “Tickets are already selling well, so I would urge people to book quickly to avoid disappointment.” While Ivybridge Library has been spared the worst of the cuts, Kathy warns against complacency. “We must make the maximum use of this super facility because the risk is that the next time an anonymous official is looking to make savings, and there will be a next time, they may think our library isn’t used as much as it should be and cut its funding. “It really is down to that oldest of cliches – if we don’t use it, we may lose it. And that would be tragic.”

showing at Lime Square THE ECLECTIC work of Ivybridge artist Dennis Walling will be on display in Lime Square Gallery during September. Dennis, who has been described as Ivybridge’s answer to Lenkiewicz, produces interesting, creative, inspirational and original pieces of work that are as unique as he is. Dennis became well-known around the town for his drawings and caricatures of ONE-OFF: As well as producfish and was asked by ing the picture, Dennis crafted the frame as well the then landlady of The Bridge Inn to paint the pub sign. This led to an article appearing in the Ivybridge, South Brent & South Hams Gazette (13 November, 1998) and it was here that he was described as “Ivybridge's answer to Lenkiewicz”. Since getting a workshop in 2006, Dennis has been able to let his, as his friends say, weird and and wonderful imagination run riot. The workshop has given him the opportunity to pursue his artistic passion and hone his skills at drawing, painting, sculpting, creating and many other things. In 2008 Dennis met Sarah, who gave him belief in his work and inspired him to take his work a step further by showing it to the public. Dennis's artistic skills encompass various styles, including pencil drawings, oil and acrylic paintings, sculpture, bespoke mirrors and frames, abstract art and probably a few more, too. This is Dennis’ first public display of his work, and will no doubt not be his last. The exhibition runs from 1-30 September in Lime Square Gallery, Glanvilles Mill. A candle holder with a difference

The veg plot was an area of much discussion
A GUIDED walk around a diverse moorland farm was the main focus of PL:21’s second Local Food Forum visit. Members went to West Peek Farm, on the edge of Dartmoor, where Dave Cole gave a fascinating tour of his farm and explained how all the livestock – goats, sheep, horses, pigs and chickens, and the dogs – play a part to help this moorland farm survive in these challenging times. Many aspects of growing were discussed in the vegetable garden area. IWC members on the Templer Way walk
Afterwards, Jane Pickard, of Home Grown – Community Owned (HogCo), spoke about the support available for community growing projects, which was of particular interest as a key aim of the forum is to create opportunities to increase the capacity and market for food grown locally. Jan Taylor, from the Greengrocers in Ivybridge, surprised many by stating she, too, welcomes small quantities of fruit and vegetables from local gardeners into her store. The next food forum is yet to be confirmed but will coincide with British Food Fortnight, which runs from 17 September – 2 October. Young Farmer hosts Estonians AN IVYBRIDGE Young Farmer has led an exchange between Devon Young Farmers and their Estonian counterparts. Nine Estonians were welcomed to Devon this summer, following a visit to Estonia by 16 Devon Young Farmers last July. The visitors learnt about the Young Farmers’ movement, British agriculture and got the opportunity to practise their language skills. They were also introduced to traditional YFC activities such as a tug-of-war competition, a barn dance and a visit to the Mid-Devon Show. Jen Rowland, of Ivybridge YFC, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for the Estonians to visit England, and the Devon members learnt a lot about their own area too!” 18

Mid-summer get together for twinners IVYBRIDGE TWINNING Association held its annual barbecue in July, when they welcomed four new members and started to look forward to next spring’s trip to St Pierre-sur-Dives. Despite the morning being under ‘Dartmoor cloud’, the weather cleared by the afternoon and members enjoyed Gribbles kebabs, sausages and burgers,
washed down with cool Pimms and a fine selection of other liquids. Next year’s 40th anniversary visit will celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Twinning Charter between the two towns, and the association is hoping that the Mayor, who is their permanent president, will travel with the group to help mark this special occasion.

The cast of Prescription for Murder
JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED
WAS IVYBRIDGE Theatre Company’s stag- on 12 and 13 August at The Watermark. ing of Prescription for Murder just what the doctor ordered? Well, it was not quite so predictable, as the strange occurrences and identity of the mysterious visitor to the sleepy North Devon village kept the audience in suspense right up to the very final twist of this thriller. ITC staged the Norman Robbins play
The play was directed by Lesley Thurley and assistant Katherine HowardDavis and produced by Teresa Davis. The actors fully enjoyed their roles, which was evident in some sparkling performances, with newcomers Trudy White and Justin Avery blending in seamlessly with their ‘acting’ peers.

FOLLOWING ITS very successful Honey Day in August, Ivybridge Country Market is holding another special market on 23 September, this time devoted to apples. When the autumn season begins to turn the leaves, apples are ready to be harvested. This versatile fruit can be used in all sorts of dishes, from salads to main courses, desserts and cakes, as well as a fresh, raw snack. Doug Palmer is a well-known local grower and has been a producer at the market of a number of years, and he supplies a number of eating and cooking variety of apples at this time of year. Varieties of apple for sale on the day will include Efremont Russet, Margil, Charles Ross, Cox’s and Ashmeads Kernel.

We try our very best to make sure the details in the magazine are correct, but in the August issue we got in a bit of a muddle with the date of the special honey day at Ivybridge Country Market. On the What’s On page and in the calendar we got it right – 12 August – but in the report, ‘The place to bee’ (page 8), we put 14 August! Sorry for any confusion and inconvenience caused.

IVYBRIDGE FISH COMPANY
Reel in great tasting fish HAVE YOU been ‘hooked’ by the Ivybridge Fish Company yet? A lot of people have and as Tasha says: “We already have lots of lovely regulars and locals supporting us and it is the excitement and great feedback we receive that ensures our business will continue. “This in itself has generated an awareness of other local businesses, which can only strengthen the loyalty towards Ivybridge town shopping. A huge thanks for all the local support.” With a loyalty card, telephone orders, cooking suggestions and special request orders, to name just a few of the services on offer, the shop in Glanville’s Mill is well worth a visit. Why not order in a lobster or some oysters for a special dinner party – a day’s notice is all that is required.

With sushi now seen as a healthy alternative to more regular snacks, they are offering homemade sushi for sale every alternate Friday and Saturday in September. Take BETTER PHOTOS More tips on how to improve the images you take using your digital camera from David Rayner of Ivybridge & District Camera Club
WHILE GIVING a short talk recently, I’d wanted to explain the photographic term ‘depth of field’ and decided to use a photo to illustrate the small part of an image that can be in focus. There was indeed a murmur of discovery in the audience when I projected the image, but it was only during questions that I realised that for some, the ‘discovery’ was not for the aspect I wanted to illustrate! I’d accidentally scored a double and also clarified a deeper misconception – an incorrect idea that ‘depth of field’ referred to the distance from the camera to the focus point. When, every day, we take acceptably sharp images with our cameras it is difficult to appreciate that every lens has only one point that is in focus. But it is true; just one spot in the image is exactly in focus. However, while only one point or distance away from the camera is truly in focus, other parts are often acceptably sharp. Sometimes we may think that all parts are acceptably sharp, and if it is a landscape, perhaps that is what we’ll strive to achieve. Other times we may desire part of the image to be out of focus. For example, in a head and shoulders portrait of a bride we’ll probably agree that the eyes should be at the sweetspot of exact focus, but it might be nice if her head-dress was soft, and we would certainly want distractions from the background to be out of focus. We’d like to take control of this in our photographs, so let’s investigate further: In the photo above you will see a zone of acceptable sharpness centred at the flower and extending a cm or two beyond and in front. This zone is called the depth of field (DoF). There are ways to calculate 24
THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE September 2011
the size of the DoF and also where the precise focus point is, but we just need to know it happens. Note the ruler is there to illustrate the DoF zone, not the focal distance. The camera is 100cm away from the flower and on 3x zoom. A zone of acceptable sharpness occurs with every photo you take but the extent of the zone will differ from image to image. With a little care, we can tailor the depth of field and so make more of the photo appear in focus or alternatively make our subject stand out from the image. Unfortunately, there are a number of factors to consider and so I sometimes recommend using ‘scene’ modes if your camera has them. A major factor in DoF is the size of the lens or aperture. Small lenses or small apertures have deep depth of fields so much more of the image will be in focus. These days, cameras automatically adjust exposure, so on a bright day the aperture is likely to
be smaller than on a dull day and so the depth of field larger. Setting the camera to landscape mode also reduces the aperture, increasing the DoF. You don’t need a landscape to use the landscape mode, so here are two ways of having more things in focus in your photo. Shoot on a bright day and use landscape mode. If you want to be a little more technical and set or view your apertures remember they are like UK knitting needle sizes – the bigger the ‘f’ number, the smaller the aperture. DoF also increases as the focal point increases, so focussing further into a scene will make more of the photo appear sharp. However, you can waste your depth of field by focussing unnecessarily deep into a scene, particularly as the zone of acceptability extends further behind the focal point than in front. For a landscape where maximum depth of field is desired, try to focus about a third into the scene. Conversely, the DoF is very short when the subject is close to the camera, as the photo above illustrates. Make good use of this effect to blur out distracting backgrounds by simply moving closer to your subject. For maximum blurring of backgrounds (and foregrounds) open the aperture as large as possible. This tends to happen automatically on dull days, but you can ensure it happens all the time by selecting head and shoulders portrait or sports action modes. Using zoom also reduces DoF, particularly with smaller subjects like flowers. Wide angle shots make unflattering portraits and a modicum of zoom is often used to flatten perspective as well as reduce the depth of field.

Cricket season moves into the final overs THE SEASON may be starting to draw to a Cup between the winners of the top four close for Ivybridge cricketers, but there is still plenty to occupy players and supporters over the Bank Holiday and into September. There is a double-header of matches at Filham Park on Sunday, 28 August. In the morning, the club’s best under-19 players take on a touring youth side from Knowle in Bristol, while in the afternoon a club XI will play against an Ivybridge Old Boys team. Former second team regular James Willacy is organising the Old Boys team, and there will be a barbecue after the match. The club’s Sunday side is currently top of Division Two of the South Devon Cricket League. With a couple of games remaining they have a great chance of promotion to the top flight for the first time. If they are successful in their remaining games and win the division they will go into the end-of-season League 26

Therefore, if you are involved in a team, please do send in reports and results. Send reports, photos and results to sport@theivybridge magazine.co.uk
