New Year’s resolution
H
ands up who has already made a New Year’s resolution? It’s a bit of a hackneyed old cliche, but the underlying idea of assessing your life as the opportunities of a new year approach is a sound one and for all of us who barely last the first week, many are made of sterner stuff and go on to make real changes to their life. If your resolution is, or is likely to be, centred around health, fitness and wellbeing, then living in Ivybridge is a real bonus. The town is blessed with a host of services and activities that can help everyone make a change for the better in their lives, so they can feel good and look good. Our feature on pages 17 and 18 gives details of many of these. It is no different for us here at The Ivybridge magazine. We continually strive to think of new, compelling community content to include in the magazine so that each issue is informative, interesting and contains something new and different. This issue is no exception as we are delighted to start our new series ‘Discover Dartmoor’. We are very fortunate to live in a town bordering one of the country’s greatest national parks, with many of us only a short
Monthly musings from the editor “Looming to the north of Ivybridge are the rounded hills of Dartmoor. The southernmost of these, the Western Beacon, is a landmark of the town and a superb lookout point.” Discover Dartmoor – our new series starts on page 6 walk from being on the Moor. Over the coming months, we will be looking at the Moor’s history, tradition and legend, and the activities which take place there, which will help us get to know and respect the amazing countryside on our doorstep.
While a new year is a source of optimism, for Ivybridge the beginning of 2014 also marks the end of an era. Stowford Paper Mill is now closed (see page 13) and the last link to the town’s mill heritage has gone. Some very exciting plans for the site have been proposed, which we hope will come to fruition. If they do, then the Mill will play as big a role in the town’s future as it has in its past. Community stories in this issue include news that the City of Plymouth Credit Union is opening in the town this month (page 5), SeaMoor Children’s Centre is looking for volunteers to help local families, one of the town’s primary schools has got gold for its sports provision, and St Luke’s Hospice is inviting you to hold a coffee morning and make a difference. We also have a New Year message from the town mayor, our regular columns – Wild About Ivybridge, Pets’ Corner and Take Better Photos – return, plus there’s our What’s On calendar and a guide to the films showing at The Watermark in January. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year and I look forward to continuing to bring you all that is good about Ivybridge in 2014.

To mark the closure of Stowford Paper Mill, which is such an iconic landmark in the town, we have reproduced the cover of our April 2011 issue. While it is a sad end of an era, plans for the site’s redevelopment mean the Mill could play a significant, and exciting, role in the town’s future.

MANOR PRIMARY GETS SCHOOL GAMES KITEMARK GOLD A primary school has been recognised for its commitment to school sport and competition. Manor Primary School was thrilled to receive the School Games Kitemark Gold from the Youth Sport Trust. More than 1,600 schools applied for the kitemark, with Manor being among only four per cent who achieved the coveted Gold status. The kitemark is a government-led initiative and the award is dependent upon meeting a wide range of sporting criteria,
including a high level of children’s involvement in extra-curricular sporting activity, the engagement of children in leading and managing activities, close links with local partners who support the provision
CREDIT UNION OPENING IN IVYBRIDGE The City of Plymouth Credit Union is opening a branch in Ivybridge. It will be open on a weekly basis starting on Thursday, 16 January, 2014, between the hours of 9.30am and 12 noon and will be located in the library. Credit Unions are a real alternative to banks and building societies and aim to help people take control of their money. They encourage saving and only borrowing money that can be repaid. They are essentially a savings and loan co-operative, which means that members pool their savings to lend to
one another to help run the credit union. The funds are only used to run the services and reward the members – there are no outside shareholders. Any excess funds are channelled back to members as a dividend or used to improve the overall service of the credit union. To keep all money safe, credit unions can’t lend out all their members’ savings or plough the remainder into anything that carries too much risk. All the money saved in the credit union has the same government protection as normal bank savings.
CHILDREN CENTRE APPEALING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO HELP LOCAL CHILDREN AND FAMILIES SeaMoor Children’s Centre is appealing to members of the community who may like to volunteer some of their time to help support the local children and their families alongside their staff. There are a variety of volunteer roles within the centre, which is part of the South Hams Children’s Centres group. Roles include supporting the play workers in stay and play sessions, assisting the administration teams, driving the play
bus and fundraising in the local communities. Karen Pearce, the centre lead, said: “Volunteers, are crucial to the services that the centre can provide. They are given comprehensive training and supervision following Action for Children guidelines.” î For more information on the groups and services offered by the South Hams Children’s Centres, call 01752 896356 or visit www.southhams childrenscentres.org.uk

Dartmoor THE AMAZING COUNTRYSIDE ON YOUR DOORSTEP The Erme
Ivybridge and the moor By John Howell
L
ooming to the north of Ivybridge are the rounded hills of Dartmoor. The southernmost of these, the Western Beacon, is a landmark of the town and a superb lookout point. The moor is full of tradition and legend, but also home to many people and businesses. This is the first in a series of articles in The Ivybridge magazine that explain Dartmoor and what goes on there. Dartmoor is formed from a dome-shaped mass of granite. This harder rock is responsible for higher ground in a number of places in Devon and Cornwall. Because the sea is not far away, this high land is exposed to wind, has a lot of rain and is generally wild and barren. Rivers radiate out from it, including the Erme, which cuts out through a steep valley – or cleave – past Ivybridge and into the lowlands of the South Hams. In the ancient past, the climate was warmer and people lived high on the moor. You can see the remains of their huts in some places, and near the head of the Erme there is even an entire Bronze Age village. Some of these people were buried under huge mounds of stone – barrows – a few of which you can see from Ivybridge on the Western Cornish Maidens

Beacon. In later, pre-historic, times and the middle ages, the moor was used for mining and the valleys were heavily disturbed by tin extraction. China clay mining is still a large feature at Lee Moor, though the Redlake works (destination of the ‘Puffing Billy Track’ across the Western Beacon) lasted only 20 years. The moor is also the main water supply area for most of South Devon, and a big military training area. Dartmoor was a Royal Hunting Ground at the time of Domesday, and most of the northern moor is still owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, one of the Royal Estates. But all of the southern moor, for about seven miles north of Ivybridge, is privately owned and has been used mainly for agriculture for Erme Valley from Sharpitor
many centuries. The moor starts as soon as you leave the higher streets of Ivybridge, with the railway, the edge of the granite and the National Park boundary all coinciding. The lower slopes have been enclosed to make fields – inbye land – and this is the area currently inhabited. The higher, open slopes are managed as rough grassland. In the 1950s, Dartmoor was designated a National Park. In Britain, this means a planning and development agency that seeks to maintain a unique landscape and promote a rural way of life, and manage leisure uses. As the years have gone by, there has been an increase in the use of the moor by walkers, riders, hunts, runners and, more recently, mountain bikers. Access to the unenclosed areas of the moor is now formalised for many recreational purposes. But the land is still managed by the farmers and private landowners who earn their livings in this landscape. Over the coming months, we will be providing articles on archaeology, history, farming, moorland and woodland conservation, the National Park Authority, safety of walkers, the Dartmoor Rescue Group (ever wondered about those low-flying helicopters in the middle of the night?) and other moorland activities. Look out for these, and get to know and respect the countryside on your doorstep.

ROTARY CLUB’S RAPID REACTION TO TYPHOON DISASTER SOUTH HAMS NEWSPAPERS
Following the devastation in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Haiyan, the Rotary Club of Ivybridge reacted immediately to support the relief efforts. Thanks to the flexibility of Tescos Lee Mill, volunteers were able to collect at the store for two days, raising, thanks to the generosity of the shoppers, an incredible £1,539. Heather Hanrott, head teacher at Woodlands Park Primary School, also contacted the Rotarians to pledge the school’s support for the fundrais-
ing efforts. The school welcomed donations from the community and the staff donated their Secret Santa money, raising an amazing £349. The combined donations
meant the Rotary Club of Ivybridge were able to buy four Shelterboxes, which provide temporary shelter and essential life-saving supplies to displaced families in the Philippines.
FRIENDS GET THE GO AHEAD The Friends of MacAndrews Field ended 2013 on a high when phase one proposals were accepted. This means the play area should be installed in the near future, along with the community orchard. It is also anticipated that the memorial bench for The Bedford Boys should be in place in time for The Big Lunch, which is planned to have a WWII theme in recognition of the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. The past year has seen a lot achieved, with a wonderful job having been done on the northern boundary following clearance and planting days.
letter SIR – Following an article in your December issue from Ivybridge Town Council, I felt it important to clarify some of the facts. The article implied that South Hams District Council may cut its council tax support grant to the Town Council by “over £30,000”. The situation is that SHDC is proposing to reduce the level of council tax support grant which is paid to towns and parishes by 13.54% in 2014/15. For Ivybridge Town Council, a

13.54% reduction means that the council tax support grant allocation from the district council would reduce from £31,637 to £27,353 – a reduction of £4,284. The reason that SHDC is proposing a reduction is due to the fact that the council itself is forecasting that its government grant funding will reduce by 13.54%. We expect to hear further on this when the Government announces its grant allocation due in mid-December (2013). The Government has made it clear that funding for
scheme, called Council Tax Reduction, taking its place. Current proposals are that working age claimants pay a minimum of 20% towards their council tax bill. Pensioners would be protected from receiving any reduction to their current entitlement and second homeowners would lose the 10% council tax discount, meaning they now pay 100% of the council tax bill. I hope that this helps to clarify the situation. Lisa Buckle, Head of Finance, South Hams District Council

council tax support will no longer be a separate amount within the council’s overall government grant that it will receive. From 2014/15 onwards, the government will simply wrap this funding up in an all encompassing sum. The Government has recently stated that it is entirely for local councils to decide how much they are prepared to spend on council tax support, which is why allocations for future years will not be separately identified. SHDC is merely passing on the government cut in funding.

No formal decision has been taken on this yet, although the district council has consulted with all towns and parishes to ask them to prepare for such a decision which will be taken in February 2014 as part of the overall budget proposals. The article also mentioned communities with second homes and pensioner households not being affected by this situation. This refers to an entirely different scheme. The government abolished council tax benefit from April 2013, with a new local

WORK AT THE TOWN COUNCIL All Town Councillors and staff continue to strive to provide a good public service to the community of Ivybridge. Many projects continue to be undertaken and much time is given by everyone to provide the best possible facilities in our town. Caroline has given many voluntary hours to these vital services. On behalf of the Council I am honoured to be able to give this award which reflects the magnificent dedication of this individual. It’s an incredible achievement as she has made a demonstrable difference to countless numbers of people and I thank her on behalf of Ivybridge. Caroline was presented with her Award at the December Town Council meeting and I hope to raise as much funds as possible for my Charity this year – Street Pastors, Ivybridge. EVENTS REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY The Remembrance Sunday held in Ivybridge, with several thousand wonderful people attending to remember those who had paid the ultimate sacrifice for their Country made me enormously proud of the people of this town. As Town Mayor I was particularly pleased to see a number of serving members of the Armed Forces in attendance, many of whom have recently returned from tours of duty. The presence of so many young people representing groups and organisations, such as Guides, Scouts, and Cadets, along with our local schools was truly remarkable and emphasised the importance that residents of all ages attach to this occasion. Credit must be given to the Ivybridge Branch of the Royal British Legion who organised this magnificent event. CHRISTMAS DAY EVENT The regular Christmas Day event for those who would either be on their own or a couple who may find the planning for Christmas Day too overwhelming continued in The Watermark . The day’s proceedings included a wonderful lunch and entertainment. Grateful thanks must be given to all those who kindly made donations, whether time, money or other contributions, to ensure the day’s success. POLICING MATTERS We would like to welcome our new Police Inspector for the town, Inspector Neil Ralph and the Council will continue to work with him and the team to address some of the anti social behaviour issues in the town. END OF AN ERA
The Mill site
I
vybridge’s proud mill town heritage has come to an end with the cessation of paper making at Stowford Paper Mill. The last reel of paper – to be used in high end desk diaries – came off the machines on 21 November, 2013, and the site is currently undergoing decommissioning before redevelopment work can begin. Paper making started at Stowford Mill 226 years ago, in 1787, on the same site as a corn mill, both using water from the River Erme as a source of power. Initially, paper was produced by hand, one sheet at a time from locally collected cotton rags and supplied to local customers. Half a century later, in 1837, the first paper making machine was installed to meet increasing demand for printing and writing papers. The arrival of the railway in Ivybridge in 1848 no doubt influenced Victorian entrepreneur John Allen’s decision to purchase the Mill the following year. He set about rebuilding and expanding the Mill and by the mid-1860s two larger paper machines had been installed. Over 300 people were employed, a significant percentage of the population of Ivybridge at that time. John Allen’s influence on Ivybridge extended beyond the paper mill, including building the Methodist Church, houses for employees and the gas works. His descendents sold the Mill in 1910, a few years be-
Saving seniors money ‘Saving Money on Utility Bills’ is the subject of this month’s meeting of Devon Senior Voice – Ivybridge Branch on Wednesday, 15 January. The branch’s monthly meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month between 10am and 12 noon in The Sportsman’s Inn.
Celebration year Erme WI is celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2014 and are looking forward to a special party in March to mark the occasion The group is going from strength to strength, with members having visited many places of interest in the area recently, in addition to monthly meetings which offer both education and entertainment for members. To extend the group of friends, they have twinned with a WI in another area and have already enjoyed events with them and are looking forward to more in

fore the First World War, and, unfortunately, business declined until the Receiver took over in 1923. The fortunes of the Mill were transformed the following year when it became part of Portals, a larger papermaking company, which the current owners, Arjowiggins, can trace links to. “The Mill flourished again, and as a result of specialising in the production of security and other watermarked papers, it continued to operate long after many other similar mills closed, with several generations of the same families working there,” said Mill manager Clive Wilson.
the future. The WI organisation is growing fast and new members are very welcome to join for inspiration and friendship. FIND OUT MORE: Phone Sheila on 895875
Paper production peaked both at Stowford Mill and in the UK in 2000 and has been in continued decline since, mainly as a result of changes in communications technology. During 2013, it was announced that production would be transferred to a larger paper mill in the Arjowiggins group in Scotland as part of consolidation plans to utilise excess capacity at that site and as a result, Stowford Mill has closed. “My hopes for the future of the site are that the historic buildings will remain and find a new use that will secure their future,” said Clive. “I also hope that the Mill archives of documents, photos and artefacts will be accessible to anyone interested in the history, and most important, some of the people who worked at the Mill will continue to be employed on the site.” Ambitious plans for a mixture of uses for the Mill site have been proposed and it is to be hoped that these are realised so that the Mill will play as major role in the town’s future as it has in its past.

New venue, new time Gardeners’ AGM
Starting with the January general meeting, U3A monthly meetings will now be held in The Watermark on the third Monday of the month. The speaker for the January meeting, on the 20th at 2pm, will be Barbara Harry, who will talk about the work of the Royal National Institute for the Blind. The Christmas social meeting was a great success, attended by a record number of members. The entertainment provided by the U3A Choir was warmly received and the afternoon was ably compered by Jim Whyte, who kept everyone on their toes with a quiz and a witty monologue on the adventures of a new member of U3A as he tried out some of the many groups available.

Happy New Year N
ow Christmas is over, I would like to thank all our Ivybridge clients for putting their trust in me during 2013. Although my office is at Langage Plymouth, I am in fact an Ivybridge man and offer home calls in Ivybridge to take instructions and to give free consultations, always without obligation. I am pleased to have served Ivybridge residents for several years now with Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Home Protection Trusts and other associated services. Being over 60 myself, I have many over 60s by David clients and can understand their needs and concerns. Richardson of For the over 60s the three important things to Richardsons Legal Services consider are a well drafted Will, a Lasting Power of Attorney and if you own your own home a Home Protection Trust. Most people of my age need these three things in order to ensure that their beneficiaries, who are in most cases their children, do in fact inherit, and not the government. A Home Protection Trust not only protects the family home from unexpected circumstances. It also means that probate will not be needed for the family home in the future, saving cost and making it easier and less stressful for the people who are to inherit in the future. Recently, there have been cases where banks have frozen joint accounts when one of the account holders has lost mental capacity, and other cases where family have not been allowed to look after elderly relatives because they did not have the legal authority which a Lasting Power of Attorney gives. A Lasting Power of Attorney really is a must, particularly if you are over 60. I wish all our clients, new and old, a happy and worry free 2014. A monthly guide to the wonderful wildlife you may see in Ivybridge
ABOUT IVYBRIDGE
Wild
BY MARGERY EVANS AND CELIA RALPH
IN YEARS gone by, many Ivybridge farms and large houses had their own ponds and lakes. During the winter, leats brought water from the Moor to encourage the growth of lush grass in the water meadows. Now, most of these have been drained and developed for housing and other uses with the resulting loss of wildlife. Several ponds have been created. notably the fishing lake at Filham and the wildlife pond in Woodlands Park. We can all create small wildlife havens within our own gardens by making our own pond or wet area. You need to decide whether you want a fish pond or wildlife one as they tend to be incompatible – the fish eat the other residents! Ponds can either be pre-formed or you can use a liner. Make them about 18 inches deep in the middle so that frogs do not freeze in icy spells, but make a shelf at the edge so that there is shallow water for them to lay their frogspawn. Always provide a ramp so that visiting hedgehogs can get out – many get drowned in garden ponds. Once you have allowed your pond to fill up with rain water, put in a few plants, being careful to avoid the invaders, and then leave it for wildlife to appear – you will soon find that you have newts, frogs, toads, dragon fly larvae, pond skaters, diving beetles – and possibly a visiting heron - unlike fish these come for free! Obviously, if you have toddlers you probably will not want a pond, but you could still have a sink or raised water feature. When children are a bit older they will be fascinated by pond dipping, especially when they find newts and dragonfly larvae or watch the drama of frogs mating! Once you have a well-balanced pond you should not have to clean it out much. Frogs and newts often leave the pond so don’t be too tidy – a living garden is far more interesting than a tidy, sterile one. Pond Conservation is asking us to create a million ponds in the UK. It would be good if we in Ivybridge could do our bit towards achieving this. HELP TO BUY
By Jane Hitchings BVSc MRCVS – veterinary surgeon
Pets’corner PET ADVICE FROM WOODLANDS VETERINARY GROUP
You have to be prepared to deal with anything when you are on call... Dartmoor Zoo had a collapsed female lynx and couldn’t get hold of their normal vet, so called us for help. Having first raided the surgery for its supplies of ketamine, medetomidine and diazapam, all powerful sedatives, I added the gauntlets and a stack of large towels for good measure and headed out. I advised the zoo owner that I was not experienced at zoo work, but that I’d do my best to help. I asked how heavy the lynx was and the keeper replied that he thought that she was 30-40kg, with teeth and an ability to leap five metres into the air from a standstill. So, just an over-sized moggie then, I thought to calm myself! Ben, zoo owner of television and film fame, was charming and thanked me for turning out. I grabbed my stuff and followed the men to the lynx enclosure, where, sure enough, the female lynx was lying half in and half out of her enclosure with glazed, expressionless eyes and a fearsome set of canines and nails. I poked her through the wire mesh with a branch to assess her level of response and she snarled and lifted her head. That was the end of my conscious examination – she was going to have to be sedated. The zoo staff, who care deeply for their charges, were well equipped with a spring-loaded pole syringe, which means that animal could be injected from four feet away. My calculated dose was administered into her thigh muscle and the lynx then careened off her platform and into her run and settled in the least accessible place under a fallen tree. After having gingerly poked her to assess if it was safe to approach, I crept under the log and threw a heavy towel over the now, snoring, lynx’s head. I then grabbed a double handful of scruff, keeping her teeth pointing away from me and we lugged her inert form into the back of her house corridor, where there was good lighting. The anaesthetic cocktail gave me enough time to examine the lynx thoroughly, noting that she was in good bodily condition, with excellent teeth. I took blood samples, ran intravenous fluids and gave her antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and multivitamins. It was not clear on clinical examination what was making her so ill, but I thought that she probably had a neurological condition, as I noticed before she succumbed to the drugs that she had a head tilt. I hoped that the blood results might throw some light on the cause later. Having warned the staff to be on their guard as the sedatives may wear off quickly, the lynx started growling, which was a sign to quickly remove the IV catheter and get the heck out! We left her in a safe recovery position within her own compartment and I gingerly administered the reversal agent into her thigh muscle. Within a minute, the lynx was fully conscious. The zoo staff were very grateful and eager to get the blood results that I would run when I got back to base. On being asked if I would like to wash my hands in the restaurant before leaving, I replied, “Hell no! I want to see if my colleagues get the lynx effect! The scheme is available against both new-build and existing homes with a value not exceeding £600,000. The Guarantee covers cases of repossession occurring within seven years of the date of the mortgage and compensation is payable to the lender only if the sale proceeds achieved on repossession are less than 80% of the original purchase price. TAKE BETTER
Photos
BY DAVID RAYNER OF IVYBRIDGE AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB
More tips on how to improve the images you take using your digital camera DO YOU STOP taking photos in poor weather? So long as you can keep the camera and lens dry, then some wonderfully atmospheric images can be made and it’s well worth trying. We’ll look at this idea by explaining how I took the photo below, and then, as a little diversion from our normal in-cameraonly subjects, I’ll explain how I turned it into the ‘creative’ image on the right. The biggest tip for many photographs is to set out with an idea already in mind. I had previously seen a modern tapestry with a man and boy walking away down a dark alley, which roused some emotions and questions. I thought it was intriguing and was determined
to use the idea myself one day. So when my son and grandson visited on a bleak weekend recently, I suggested that the wet weather was no bar to a little fun at the seaside. I had already thought I would mystify the image creatively and knew that a bit of drama in the sky would help. A tip I use for keeping the camera dry during drizzly weather is to get the camera ready in the car, then fit a shower cap over the camera and lens. Shower caps are readily available when you stay in some hotels! Mostly I use Aperture priority mode, and I’m not afraid of setting the ISO higher on dull days. The reduction in quality and increase of signal noise won’t be seen unless you are printing a poster, so don’t be scared to try higher ISO settings. These settings may be set at home or in a shelter from the rain. It’s even possible to use the camera with the shower cap over to roughly compose your image. As it was, when we got to the sea the rain had almost stopped.
Seeing a large puddle, I asked my subjects to walk out into the area where the reflections in the sand were greatest and took about a dozen pictures as they walked out to where I’d suggested. I knew that only one or two would have the best separation of the two subjects and relationship to the day marker and groyne. Just as we finished, the rain started again with a vengeance, so we beat a quick retreat to a café for lunch and a quick wipe down of the camera with a microfibre cloth. Job done as far as the photo was concerned. Later, on the computer, I balanced the lightness between the sky and beach, muted the colours a little and then applied a little vertical blur to mystify the scene. A final tidying of the rubbish from the beach and moving the post on the edge of the frame completed the image.
