We can exclusively reveal...
T
he Ivybridge magazine has not one but two hot-off-the-press Christmas exclusives for you this month! We can reveal that Santa is set to make his most spectacular arrival yet to the town’s Christmas Festival by... turn to page 21 and all will be revealed! Plus, leading up to his big visit, we have secured an exclusive article from Father Christmas telling us why, when he has the whole world to choose from, he is going to be doing his Christmas shopping in Ivybridge this year – turn to page 16 for the full story. The Ivybridge magazine is pleased to support the Christmas Festival by publicising the programme (page 21) and producing the posters and leaflets. Since we’ve lived here, it has always been a very good evening, and brilliantly supported by the town. I am sure that this will be case this year – and it should be, there is so much going on. Christmas is, of course, a very important time for our local retailers, even more so considering the prevailing economic situation. We’ve chosen the theme ‘A Happy Christmas is a local Christmas’ for our 10page guide to Christmas in Ivybridge because Ivybridge has so much to offer that you have
It is not all Christmas this month, though. You will still find the usual great range of compelling community content – news, what’s on, sport, club and group reports – you’ve come to expect. In local news, Ivybridge Community College has achieved a FIFTH consecutive Outstanding rating from Ofsted – and joins a very elite band of schools in the country which can claim this honour (page 6). The Ivybridge Citizen of the Year has been announced as Caroline Hodgson (page 5). I sit on the Town Team with Caroline and can vouch that she is a worthy winner. Ivybridge swimming sensation Megan Bowen is preparing for one of her biggest tests when she competes in the World School Games in Brazil (page 38). Megan, 16, will face the best in the world in her age group and the games will be a good gauge of her progress as she sets her sights on potentially competing at the 2016 Olympics. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of the magazine. We will be out and about in the town in the lead up to Christmas and will hopefully see many of you, too. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas.

STREET PASTORS TO MARK FIRST YEAR Ivybridge Street Pastors are holding their AGM on Wednesday, 27 November, at 7pm at the Methodist Church and would very much like people to attend and see what they do. The initiative has been running for a year and they will be sharing how it has gone – and looking ahead to the next year. The meeting will also include a talk about changes to housing and benefits to help the pastors understand better some of the pressures people are dealing with. There will also be coffee and cake!

The 2nd Ivybridge Brownies recently went on their annual mission to clean up Ivybridge, writes Young Leader Rosie Cantin. Armed with bin bags and gloves, they walked around the town centre, collecting any rubbish they could find and bringing it back to their Brownie meeting place so it could be disposed of properly. The girls set off at around 6pm and in just under an hour collected bags and bags of rubbish. They
were all shocked both by the amount of rubbish they collected from such a small area, and what it could mean for local wildlife around Ivybridge, and the kind of things they found – takeaway cartons, cans, cigarette ends, lottery tickets,

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED TO HELP COMBAT LONELINESS AMONG IVYBRIDGE’S OLD PEOPLE
WANTED: ENERGY CHAMPIONS
A Silent Auction to raise funds for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan is set to be held in the Watermark early in December. Local artists, writers, crafters, private individuals and businesses are being asked to donate something to be auctioned. The exact dates are to be confirmed, but the sheer scale of the disaster will mean relief aid will be needed for some time. Full details, including auction items and how to bid, will be advertised as soon as possible. If you have anything to offer for the auction, please call The Watermark on (01752) 892220 or contact Ann on (01752) 691648.
A charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people is urgently appealing for volunteers in Ivybridge to spare a few hours each month to help with the running of local tea parties for the elderly – and enjoy a cuppa and a cake themselves! Contact the Elderly aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within the town – providing a regular
and vital friendship link every month. Each guest would be collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and is taken to a volunteer host’s home where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. The charity is hoping to set up a new group in Ivybridge, however, it is currently struggling to recruit volunteer hosts to welcome the group into their homes for tea once or twice a year, and volunteer drivers who are able to pick up the older guests from their homes
Local Transition Initiative PL:21 is currently looking for local people willing to become Community Energy Champions. The group want to form a team of local residents to offer advice to people on how to save energy and money in their homes and are looking for people interested in attending a free one-day workshop on basic efficiency advice within the community on 9th and 10th December in Newton Abbot. IVYBRIDGE’S CITIZEN OF THE YEAR WINNER ANNOUNCED
HAVE YOU SIGNED? Ivybridge is keen to promote the wonderful walking available from and to the town and would like to be part of the national Walkers are Welcome initiative to help boost the local economy. To join the scheme, 600 local people need to show they support the idea, so why not take a minute to add your name to the petition at www.ipetitions. com/petition/ivybridgejoining-walkers-arewelcome-towns
Ivybridge people are being encouraged to have their say on the future of health services in their community. Local residents are invited to an engagement meeting being held by the new Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group on Tuesday, 26 November, at Ivybridge Methodist Church between 2-4 pm. The CCG wants to hear from stakeholders ideas on how community healthcare services should be provided in the future.

bottles and wrappers are just some of the many things they collected. Everyone involved really enjoyed doing the litter pick, but also enjoyed learning what the litter could mean for local wildlife and people living in Ivybridge.
The recipient of this year’s David Britton Citizen of the Year Award, which recognises a person who has made an invaluable contribution to the town community, is Caroline Hodgson. Caroline plays a prominent role in many organisations in the town, and her whole ethos is to encourage communication and partnership. Among her many voluntary projects are the Ivybridge Food Bank, championing the Street Pastors in the town, and, as part of the Methodist Church,

and accompany them to the gathering. Contact the Elderly’s development officer, Janey Comber, said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but our hopes of extending this lifeline to older people in Ivybridge are currently fading due to a real shortage of volunteers in the area. î If you would like to volunteer, contact Janey Comber on 01840 230186 or email janey.comber@ contact-the-elderly.org.uk
initiatives such as the Open House café. Caroline not only gets actively involved in delivering initiatives, she also engages with groups working to make a difference, like the Town Team. She epitomises the essence of team working, but her ability to identify services which are needed in the town and to be proactive in making them happen, in addition to her work with Dame Hannahs in the speech and language department, mean that she is a truly worthy winner.
FREE PARKING Shoppers can park for free in Ivybridge in the lead up to Christmas. In a repeat of the initiative that provided a valuable boost to businesses last year, Tesco 106 funds to cover the lost revenue to the council. Leonards Road and Glanvilles Mill car parks will offer free parking for up to two hours from November 25 to Christmas Eve. î See ‘Christmas in Ivybridge’ for more details
Mayor Cllr Karen Pringle said: “I am honoured to be able to give this award which reflects Caroline’s incredible dedication to Ivybridge. As the Street Pastors are my charity for the year, I am well aware of the enormous efforts that Caroline Hodgson makes, so it gives me great personal pleasure that others share my view of the excellent service she gives to our town.” The Mayor will formally present Caroline with the award at the full council meeting on Monday, 2 December, 2013.

The Town Team, made up of traders, councillors, volunteers and stakeholders, has been working since last autumn to identify areas for improvement to help boost the town’s economy. cadet groups and other local organisations laid wreathes at the town’s War Memorial. The parade was once again led by the Plymouth Pipe Band and the huge crowd was treated to a flypast from a replica WW1 bi-plane. Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council LOOKING AHEAD TO 2014 AT THIS TIME of year, budgets for all local authorities are being examined closely to see what services are needed for the future and where savings can be made. Ivybridge Town Council is no different and over the year it has become clear how much people value many of the open spaces and activities that are offered, whether dog walking or football in Filham Park; using the Citizens Advice Service in The Watermark; seeking advice on bus timetables and local walks or enjoying the events like Christmas celebrations. All these can only happen because of the Town Council staff and inevitably for local Councils this is their biggest resource and cost, so over the two years staff numbers have been cut back and a review undertaken to enable the Council to perform as efficiently as it can, invariably with less money. Regrettably, because of a change in the way the Government collects Council Tax it has meant that Town Council finances have been affected, so that some of our money depends on South Hams District Council passing it on. Next year, they have decided to retain some of the money raised directly from Ivybridge council taxpayers, which is hugely disappointing and probably means that a small increase in Ivybridge Council Tax is inevitable. In 2015, the District Council may decide to pass none of it onto us and that could reduce the Council Tax we receive by over £30,000 (around 10%) and Councillors will be looking hard at how this problem can be addressed. It is a complicated picture, but the communities with second homes and generally pensioner households will not be affected by this situation – it is family towns with affordable housing that are most affected as people might be on benefits and already having to pay a contribution to Council Tax. This approach is very divisive for the District and could, in the long-term, influence whether Ivybridge can “afford” to have new social housing built if it means that householders here are going to be penalised with higher Council Tax so that District Councillors are able to decide how to use money, which should have come to Ivybridge, in the rest of the District. 2014 will be a year of change for the town. After centuries of papermaking Stowford Mill will be in new ownership and the plans for the site will emerge, but employment must still be at the heart of that development, ideally creating a mixed use site which will attract more people to our town, supporting the shops and building on the attractive environment and facilities which so many people already enjoy in Ivybridge. The Town Team and Ivybridge Town Council will continue to work closely together to create a deliverable vision for the town, and we welcome your continued feedback and comments either directly to the Town Council, via our website www.ivybridge.gov.uk or to one of the Town Councillors for your ward. Local history lesson The “Wise and Wonderful” fellowship of Ivybridge Methodist Church enjoyed a visit from Tony Barber, local historian and author of several books, at the beginning of November. He showed members some of his extensive collection of illustrations, postcards and maps, tracing the growth of the town from its beginnings as just a cluster of cottages and an inn beside the old bridge over the Erme. It was fascinating to see how much has changed – and how much hasn’t! The “Wise and Wonderful” fellowship group meets fortnightly in term time on a Friday afternoon, and enjoys a varied programme of speakers, activities and an occasional trip out. Details are posted on the Methodist Church notice board, and new members are most welcome.
Christmas social This month’s meeting of Ivybridge U3A is its annual Christmas Special Social featuring a quiz, raffle and mince pies and entertainment. The meeting is on Thursday, 5 December, in the Methodist Church, Fore Street and starts at 2pm. From January 2014, the U3A’s monthly general meetings will be held in The Watermark on the third Monday of the month.
Classic Christmas Local thespians will be bringing Christmas cheer to one and all when they perform Dickens’ classic tale A Christmas Carol at various local venues. Ivybridge Theatre Company is putting on a short version of Dickens’ classic ghost story, based on an adaptation by Keith & Ann Laity. It will be portrayed with narrative, scenes and against a simple minimalist set. The first performance is at The Watermark on Saturday, 30 November, at 8pm. To add to the festive feel, from 7pm the Yealmpton Gospel Singers will be singing a selection of Christmas songs, so be sure to arrive early! On Sunday, 1 December, the show ‘goes on the road’ to South Brent Village Hall, at 7.45pm. The last performance is on Saturday, 7 December, at 7.45pm at

the Methodist Church. Complimentary tea/coffee and biscuits are included in the price and tickets will also be sold on-the-door. Tickets for all performances cost £3 and are available from The Watermark box office. For an evening’s entertainment with a difference, why not go along to the group’s next Murder Mystery evening, ‘A Date with Death’, on Friday, 13 December, at Endsleigh Garden Centre. Enjoy a three course dinner in the Terrace Room and watch the events unfold. Advance booking only. £25 per person. To book call 01752 898906 or online at www.g-l.co.uk ITC meets on Wednesday evenings at Chapel Place, Fore Street, from 7.30pm onwards. Rock ‘n’ roll at Probus A delightful trip down Memory Lane was enjoyed by members of Ivybridge Probus Club at their latest meeting. During a fascinating talk on the diversity of music in the 1950s, guest speaker Richard Lumsden delighted those present by playing many classics from the era. Richard inherited scores of 78rpm shellac records from the 1940s and 50s after they were found in a relative’s attic. The gem of the collection is a 7”, 78rpm, shellac recording from 1902 of God Save The King. On the flip side is Reveille played on a bugle. It is believed the recording
was to mark the accession of King Edward VII. The disc is believed to be worth over £200. Members marveled at the resonance and outstanding quality of the recording of Vera Lynn’s 1940s hit Now is the Hour. Richard has done extensive research into many of the records and artists in the collection, and explained how it charts more than merely musical history. Johnny Ray’s big hit, Just Walking In The Rain, may not have moved Probus members to tears, but the record, and Johnny Ray himself, are now considered as one of the transition records between the crooners and the rockers. Enter the Blackboard Jungle, Bill Haley and Rock Around The Clock and rest is musical, indeed cultural, history as driven by the new creature known as Teenager. In 1950s USA, many towns had small independent recording studios where people could walk-in and make a recording as a gift or keepsake. One such young man walked into Sun Recording Studios in Memphis and recorded That’s All Right and Blue Moon as a present for his mother. Popular music was changed ever. As record sales soared, the BBC initiated a table of record sales on a weekly basis, based on sales from record shops in major cities. The recording industry soon cottoned on and began buying their artists’ recordings to push them ‘up the charts’. In mood of bravado, the BBC introduced a Rock and Roll show on Saturday evening called Six Five Special in 1957. FIND OUT MORE: Contact secretary Bob Mailing on 01752 892255

A Happy Christmas is a local Christmas
Why I’m shopping in Ivybridge this Christmas By Father Christmas
L
ike many of you, I have tended in the past to do my Christmas shopping in the bigger towns and cities, thinking that they are the only place to go to ensure you can find presents for everyone. After looking into it a bit more, though, I’m not sure this is the case, which is why I intend to do my shopping for presents this year in the delightful town of Ivybridge, on the edge of Dartmoor. Ivybridge has so much to offer this Christmas – great shopping, fabulous festive events and a lovely Christmassy atmosphere – and I am really looking forward to visiting. I will be making a spectacular entrance on my first visit on Friday, 29 November, when I will steam into town aboard the Santa Express at 7pm with my GirlGuide elf helpers. I’m looking forward to saying hello to many boys and girls as I make my way to my ‘Winter Wonderland’ Grotto in Glanvilles Mill, which is free to visit and will be open every Saturday morning in the lead up to Christmas. My other visits to Ivybridge will not be quite so dramatic, as I have to keep things low-key as I have an awful lot of shopping to do. Luckily, Ivybridge has some wonderful independent retailers, all within easy walking distance in Fore Street and Glanvilles Mill. It’s a bonus that there is free parking for up to two hours in the town in the lead up to Christmas. This will be a nice saving when I have to park up the sleigh and reindeer. My present list is already pretty long, and will get bigger still as children send me their lovely Christmas letters, but already I

Ivybridge has received a boost this Christmas with news that Father Christmas will be doing his present shopping in the town. Here, he explains why a Happy Christmas is a local Christmas have a good idea of where I can get some great gifts. For the children, my first stop will be Whoopee Toys, Puzzles and Games. They have an amazing range of toys, games and puzzles, from the latest crazes to the timeless and traditional, so I am sure I’ll be able to find something for everyone. They also have lots for the bigger kids on my list, too! The Ermeporium will also be a must visit, with their gadgets, games and collectables sure to be on many wish-lists. The ladies on my list are in for a real treat this Christmas. I am spoilt for choice – will it be fabulous fashion from Diana Boutique, some shabby chic for the home from Jaz Interiors, or some natural beauty products from Nature’s Larder? They may be thinking of getting a new look for the new year, so a voucher from Revelations or Spellbound would be ideal. Everyone likes to open something that glistens on Christmas morning, so I will definitely be popping into the Gallery, and saying hello to new owner Michelle.
Illuminated River Erme From Friday, 29 November, experience the magnificence of the River Erme running through the town centre, enhanced in beautiful architectural lighting for the Christmas period.

For art lovers, Lime Square and Leading Edge Gallery showcase the work of many local artists, as well as offering loads of other great gift ideas. Many people have favourite photos on their digital camera, which they would really like printed and framed. This year, I will be taking some of these along to Photocare, where they produce high-quality prints, and they have a good selection of frames as well. Ivybridge’s enviable position on the edge of Dartmoor means a lot of you like walking and outdoor activities, so thankfully there is Trail Outdoor, where I can go to get all the right gear and great advice from Mark and Nigel. I get asked to leave presents for people’s pooches and pussies, too, so I will be heading for Pawmark Pet Supplies. No matter how big or small your pet, they’ve got something for them all. I like my food, and shopping does make me hungry, so before I leave Ivybridge I will certainly be paying a visit to awardwinning butchers Gribble’s to pick up some quality meat for dinner with Mother Christmas. I am a real novice when it comes to cooking fish, but I know Mother Christmas really enjoys it on Boxing Day, so I will also call in to the Ivybridge Fish Company, where I have been told Kev offers the best advice on exactly the right type to buy AND how to cook it. Aside from the shopping, I am looking forward to seeing the

lovely River Erme, which I have been told is a jewel in the heart of the town, enhanced by beautiful architectural lighting for the Christmas period. I hope to have time to visit some of the many events in the town, such as one of the schools’ Christmas Fairs, maybe catch a festive film at The Watermark or book a ticket for the theatre company’s production of A Christmas Carol. I will, of course, also be going to many of the churches’ Christmas services. I am looking forward to seeing many of you in the town when I visit (although of course you won’t be able to see me!). Sometimes locals are the last to realise just how good their local town is, but I am sure that is not the case with residents of Ivybridge and I will see the shops doing good business this Christmas as local people support the great retailers and businesses in the town.

An Aladdin’s Cave of toys, puzzles and games “THIS IS THE BEST toy shop ever, daddy,” said a young girl as she left after a happy visit to Ivybridge’s new toy shop. Give a Ruff and Tumble adventure this Christmas AS FATHER TO three young children and knowing the importance of reading to achievement, local author Royston Wood now wants to inspire the next generation to read. Ruff and Tumble is a delightful story about two adventurous dogs that captivates the reader from the first page. Ruff is convinced the Pack Lands is under attack by goblins, but Tumble does not believe him. Despite her best efforts to be sensible, she soon gets caught up in Ruff’s enthusiasm and their mad cap adventure begins. In book two, amidst the ice and
snow, Ruff and Tumble have to fight off an Invasion of Dog Eating Yetis. Classed as “easy readers” both books have short chapters, cartoon fonts and illustrations to enthral exploring minds. Suitable from five years up to, well, adults really. Both books are available from books-4-children.com where you can also learn more about the author, read sample chapters, enter competitions or book a free school visit. Royston will add a personal sketch to every copy ordered before Christmas, making a unique gift.

Are you a Parent who worries about your children’s future? D o you have that nagging feeling that you should have a Will? Perhaps you don’t have much money to leave and you don’t think you need one? We all try to avoid these issues, but it is very important for us to make arrangements to safeguard our children. We never know when they are going to need it.
If you are expecting a child (or intend to have more) then congratulations! We can include all future children in your Will. However, if you are a little further along in life’s journey then you may have different concerns. Next month, we look at the issues you might want to consider including Lasting Powers of Attorney.
Consider this …. “I give MY money to my husband’s NEW wife to be shared amongst HER family....” This wouldn’t happen to you would it? It could, because if you don’t have a Will then all your money could be inherited by your spouse. If, after a few years, your spouse remarries then their new partner could inherit all your money. Your estate will have by-passed your own children and grandchildren.
26
Without a Will your children will only inherit from your estate if it is over £250k and even then they may not have access to it all for many years. Can you imagine your children ending up in the UK care system? It doesn’t bear thinking about. It is really important that you name

your children’s guardians in your Will. If you have an ex-partner and you are afraid that they will try to take the inheritance from your children, then we can help you to protect them and your money. You can even leave guidance about your children’s welfare and upbringing.
Wouldn’t it be great to get rid of that nagging feeling? Take our number and call us today, you don’t need to put it off. You can have an appointment at a time to suit you in the relaxed atmosphere of your own home. At the free consultation we listen to you and advise on the best way to protect your family, assets and money. Our advice is straightforward and free! REPORTS
BOOKS AND BEYOND
Pyjamas for Pudsey CHILDREN AND STAFF at Woodlands Park Primary School came to school in their pyjamas to raise money for Children in Need. The school also held a cake sale at break time and before the start of the school day the orchestra busked outside reception with a picture of Pudsey and Blush, collecting loose change. Everyone enjoyed a happy, funfilled fundraising day to raise money for children less fortunate than them and raised in the region of £260 in the process.
TV scientist inspires children THE CHILDREN OF Manor Primary School recently celebrated a book fortnight, with a variety of reading related activities. They enjoyed a visit from local author David Lawrence Jones, who inspired them to write using his tales of Bradley Baker. A production of Michael Morpugo’s ‘I Believe in Unicorns’ by touring theatre group Theatre Alibi was enjoyed by all, and a reading carousel enabled staff members to share some of their favourite stories with pupils. Visits to the local library, competitions run by staff and a book fair were just some of the other exciting activities that took place. The fortnight was wrapped up with a book character dressing up day, when children came to school dressed in a fabulous array of wonderful costumes!
CHILDREN IN YEAR 4 at Stowford School got fired up for science when local scientist and broadcaster Adam Hart-Davis dropped into school. The visit got their topic, “Inspired by Science”, off to a flying start. Adam started his presentation by explaining to the children why he considered the flushing toilet to be the most important invention ever and justified this by showing them pictures of sanitary options from less developed countries, and explained the impact these conditions had on mortality rates, particularly for children. It was a sobering thought for the children to think that, without sanitation, many of them would not have made it to school age! He went on to talk about some key inventions and scientists from
Sadie, Bethan and Grace
Adam Hart Davis with Ben, Molly, Fletcher, Eva, Sam and Katie
history, including Galileo, Erasmus Darwin, Budding and Faraday. Not only did he explain why their ideas changed our perception of the world, he also showed the children some simple experiments that illustrated his points. “It was an amazing introduction to our new topic,” said Year 4 teacher,
Matthew Medd. “Although the experiments were simple, they definitely had the ‘wow’ factor. What was fantastic was that Adam encouraged the children to explain what was happening and developed the explanations they gave with scientific facts and understanding.”
County call-up for girls THREE GIRLS FROM Stowford School have been selected to play for this year’s Devon FA U11 team. Following trials last summer, Sadie, Bethan and Grace have been training regularly at Ivybridge Community College since September and have played a series of matches playing for the Devon team. Although the team has yet to secure their first victory, they have put up some hard fought battles against teams such as Aston Villa, Oxford United and Bristol. Last weekend saw the team travel to the Chelsea training complex to take on the club's girls’ U11 team. The girls said: “It has been the best part of the season so far, travelling up to play Chelsea. Even though the girls on their team were much taller than us and we didn’t win, the facilities there are amazing – every blade of grass is perfect! It was really exciting to play on a ground where the Chelsea team actually train.”

Items for sale in Ivybridge A FACEBOOK PAGE started by a local mum is helping Ivybridge people buy and sell unwanted clothes, household items and much more. ‘Items for sale in the Ivybridge area’ was started by Kathy Harvey after she saw a similar site on the popular social network and the page now has over 2,500 members who are trading items between themselves. “I thought this would be great for Ivybridge, so one evening I decided to set it up,” explained Kathy. “I am really surprised by how well it has taken off, but it is great to see so many people recycling and selling items to other local people. “It is a friendly site, set up to help people, so it’s important members use the site in the spirit in which it has been started and respect one another. “I have sold lots of stuff on the page – and bought a fair amount, too! – and I think leading up to Christmas it will be a great place to find presents at bargain prices.” To join, search for ‘Items for sale in the Ivybridge area’ on Facebook and request to join. There are a few simple rules for the page – which Kathy stresses are important to keep to for the good running of the page – but once accepted as a member, it is very easy to list your items for sale and start buying, too.

DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS – make sure you consider the financial implications hen you consider commencing divorce proceedings you also need to consider the financial implications of the divorce. The main assets that are central to most cases are that of the former matrimonial home, the family business, the parties’ savings and pensions. A pension can be the second most valuable asset and is sometimes forgotten. When parties enter the financial process it is intended that they will provide each other with the necessary required financial disclosure which will be exchanged usually between the parties’ solicitors on a voluntary basis. It is always better to attempt to negotiate and deal with financial matters on a voluntary basis and without an Order being imposed by the Court. However, a large proportion of cases will proceed to Court to be heard in respect of financial assets of a husband and wife or civil partnership. If a case does proceed to court then the court will consider legislative provision under Section 25 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 and a set of factors to assist in its decision making. In particular, the court must have regard to all the circumstances of the case, in particular the welfare and housing needs of any children. The court will also consider the income and

End of an era One of Ivybridge Fore Street’s most long-established retailers will see the end of an era at the beginning of December. Daphne Bryant is retiring from Gallery Fine Gifts & Jewellery after 32 years, having sold the business to a new owner. TAKE BETTER
Photos
BY DAVID RAYNER OF IVYBRIDGE AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB
More tips on how to improve the images you take using your digital camera ONE LITTLE-USED feature of digital cameras is the Bracket function. This is surprising as it is a very useful function, particularly in ‘difficult’ lighting situations. It also has other uses and most modern digital cameras have this function available, so this month we’ll take a look at bracketing your images. With bracketing mode enabled, one long press of the camera button will result in several photographs being taken in quick succession, each with a different exposure. This can be very useful afterwards, as sometimes the camera will have not made the best decision about the exposure and you can then choose a different exposure to have printed. Of course, you will have used up three spaces on your memory card instead of one, but with memory cards being so inexpensive these days, this is usually not an issue. In the days of film cameras, bracketing your images was very popular as it was impossible to determine how well the camera settings had been matched to the light levels and film in use until the negatives came back from processing. At least these days one may view the LCD screen and the histogram while taking the photograph. The three images shown were taken using the bracket setting and with a 1EV (one stop) difference between photographs. The middle is the one the camera decided was correct for the scene and I agree with it on this occasion. However, consider a portrait under the same lighting when it would be entirely possible that the face would be too bright (or too dark if the subject faced the other way), and an option of two extra exposures to choose from would be very useful. It is entirely possible to adjust the camera quickly for subsequent shot using the Exposure Compensation mode or even full manual control. This is also called bracketing, but most cameras have an auto bracketing mode available in the menus. On many cameras it is simply called Auto Bracketing or just Bracketing in the menu. The advantage of auto bracketing is that you don’t need to worry about setting it for each photograph. The disadvantage of this setting is that it does not work too well for moving subjects. Usually in this scenario
“Some cameras also have the bracketing feature available on other parameters...”
only one image has the subject in the best position in the frame. Whilst the term bracketing usually refers to exposure bracketing, some cameras also have the bracketing feature available on other parameters such as white balance, contrast, colour saturation or even the aspect ratio of the image. Only one parameter can be used for the bracketing at a time and so when adjusting the menu you may have to select first the type of bracketing then the amount of change for each bracket. There is often the option of selecting the number of shots in each bracket - 3, 5 or 7 shots. Finally, once you have the bracketed series of images back on the computer there is more one can do with them than simply selecting the best image. Most image manipulating programs allow the blending of two or more images together, taking the best parts of one image and mixing it with the best parts of another. Here I have taken the sky of the darker image and blended it with the middle exposure image.

FESTIVE END TO BUSY SEASON
MEGAN’S WORLD CHALLENGE
● golf
● swimming
THE SPECTACULAR Turkey Trot on Thursday, 5 December, will mark the end of a frantically busy year for Wrangaton Vets, writes Vets’ captain Len Simpson.. The annual festive fun competition will be followed by a lavish Christmas dinner to get everybody into the mood for the AGM, at which Mike Roberts will take over the captaincy from me. While results during the season have, in general, been a little disappointing, the real success has been that 44 different players have represented the club in 25 matches. The Vets won eight, lost 15, and halved two and Mike, an ex-Royal Navy dentist, is already making plans to improve things next year by introducing a strict fitness regime! In competitions, fortunes have fluctuated as frequently as the changing weather. Inspired by brilliant competitions secretary, Maurice Mercy, each week has featured at least one opportunity to pit members against one another, and even the occasional roll-ups have been well-supported and fiercely competitive. It’s great to see so many different winners, all of varying standards and age; at Wrangaton, you can join the vets aged 55 and above – and there are at least 14 regular players who are now over 75. Roger Cockings is the latest winner when, in taxing conditions at the beginning of November, and playing off his current 18 handicap, he won the Individual Medford. During the year, our three top golfers – Pete Newman, Tony Dardis, and Keith Bailet – have maintained their single figure handicaps, a superb achievement when you consider all the competitions they play in. Many others have worked hard to reduce theirs. John Fox, Michael Hannaford, Julian Mitchell, and even I have achieved significant reductions, but the main man this year is Steve Webber, who started the year on 26 and is currently down to 19, a thoroughly deserved achievement when you know just how hard he works at his game.
AN IVYBRIDGE STUDENT and potential future Olympic swimming star is preparing for her biggest honour to date when she jets out to Brasil to represent her school and country at this year’s International Swimming Federation’s (ISF) World School Games. Sixteen-year-old Megan Bowen is competing in the 200 and 400 metres freestyle events, where she will face the best in her age group from across the world and it will be an ideal opportunity for Megan to assess her progress. “Many of those who I will be competing against will be preparing for the 2016 Olympics, which is my dream, too,” said Megan. “It will be a chance to gauge my progress, see how the competition is performing and hopefully set some personal best times as well.”

Megan in action in the pool
Megan started swimming at Dinnaton, initially showing little interest in sport. But, when, aged 10, she competed in her first Dinnaton swimming gala, things soon changed. Dinnaton coach John Wright immediately recognised Megan’s potential and told her that she owed it to herself to take swimming more seriously and make the most of her natural talent. Within a few weeks John had taken Megan under his wing, fast-tracked her into the club’s A squad, and started her on a competitive training programme. Megan competed in regional finals at the age of 11 and won the 1500m freestyle bronze in the following year’s national
championships, aged 12. By the age of 13 Megan’s performances stepped up another notch, becoming one of the only home-grown Devon swimmers ever to win triple gold at national finals – in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle events – and also taking silver in the 100m freestyle. Megan, a member of Plymouth Leander Swimming Club – which has had eight swimmers chosen for the event – combines a minimum of 25 hours training a week with her studies at Ivybridge Community College. She flies out to Brasilia at the end of November and the ISF World Games run from 27 November to 4 December.

WEEKLY TRAINING SESSIONS for girls interested in rugby have been started by Ivybridge Rugby Club. The Sunday afternoon training is run by experienced player Trudie Grieveson, club chairman Jim Burns and a range of other experienced coaches, including the club’s director of rugby, Paul Setter. IRC is keen to give girls the opportunity to continue to be involved with rugby locally beyond the U12s level, when mixed rugby is no longer allowed.
