We have some news, too. The Ivybridge magazine is now showcasing everything that is good about our town across the South Hams and in Plymouth - see page 10 details. Finally, there is a good chance that in the very near future I will be bringing a little friend with me to events and functions. We have just got a Hearing Dog puppy - called Lenny - who we have to train and socialise and I think bringing him along to the great range of events in the town will be a great experience for him.

here are a number of consultations taking place in Ivybridge this month (page 5), and it’s vital that we take these opportunities to make sure our voices are heard on what is being proposed. The future of Ivybridge Library is currently under review by Devon County Council, who are holding a drop-in session in the Library on 12 June for people to meet senior managers and find out more about what is proposed. Two housing developments will also be consulted on this month. Hannick Homes will be presenting revised plans for the development on the east side of the town (13-20 June), while Persimmon Homes wants to build around 65 dwellings on land north of Woodlands Road, off Cornwood Road (25 June). A development which will have a big impact on the town is the £20 million regeneration of the Stowford Mill site. As we report, the site has been acquired by heritage property specialists Burrington Estates in a joint venture with Pillar Land Securities. The developers are keen to engage with the local community and have invited The Ivybridge magazine to meet them and put your questions to them – see page 5 for details.

PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT OF LAND AT EAST IVYBRIDGE PUBLIC EXHIBITION – 13 - 20 JUNE 2014

Hannick Homes control land immediately to the east of Ivybridge which is zoned for development in South Hams District Council's document ‘Ivybridge Site Allocations’. The land lies in the vicinity of the Park & Ride car park and extends to the south of Exeter Road to include a triangular site to the north east of the Rugby Club.

In November 2012, Hannick Homes held a public exhibition at The Watermark Centre at which proposals for the sites were displayed for public comment. Since that time, further consideration has been given to the design of a viable scheme for the land and the company’s advisors have drawn up a revised plan which it is intended will form the basis of a planning application to be submitted to SHDC. The scheme proposed will include residential (including affordable homes),

employment, a health centre (for the relocation of the existing GP practice), public open space, a small neighbourhood retail centre and an assisted living/care facility. The principal access to the scheme would be via a new roundabout on Exeter Road.

An exhibition of material showing the proposed scheme and explaining the factors taken into account by its designers will be displayed in Ivybridge library from 13 - 20 June. Representatives of Hannick Homes and the company’s design team will be available at the exhibition from 12 noon until 9pm on Friday, 13 June, in order to explain the proposals and to answer questions. You are cordially invited to attend the exhibition and to submit any comments you wish to make.

The girls, who have been friends since they were both Brownies in Ivybridge, are raising money to go towards research to find a cure for these diseases. Devon County Council is looking at ways to reduce the running costs of its medium and large libraries. It is proposing that Ivybridge Library adopts the community hub, Devon Centre approach. Alongside the library, Devon Centres offer a range of other community-based services – such as adult learning, services for adults with learning disabilities, work hubs, and services from the community and voluntary sector – which reflect the needs of that community. The drop-in session on 12 June is your chance to meet senior managers from Devon Libraries and find out more about the proposed changes. î Full details of the proposals can be viewed at http://new.devon.gov.uk/libraryreview/ The consultation runs until 17 July, 2014.

IVYBRIDGE STREET NAMES – THE STORY BEHIND THEM

This road was reference to the legend of John Trinnaman. He was a butler at Stowford House in the 14th or 15th century and met his death in a deep pool in Longtimber Woods. COMMUNITY RALLIES FOR SCOUTS AND GUIDES’ APPEAL The community has sprung into action to support the town’s Scouts and Guides’ appeal to raise £55,000 for essential repairs and maintenance to the Victoria Hall. The Rotary Club of Ivybridge will be donating all proceeds from their annual duck race on Saturday, 21 June (see page 21), to the appeal. Ducks cost just £1 and the Scouts and Guides will be around town in the weeks leading up to the race selling them. SKYDIVING SYLVIA’S CASH FOR SAFER STREETS

Sylvia presents a cheque for £300 to the Street Pastors

A daredevil town councillor has plunged 15,000ft to raise money for Ivybridge Street Pastors. Sylvia Rutley made the “petrifying yet thrilling” skydive to support the group, which has been credited with helping reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour in the town centre at the weekend.

“It’s a fantastic addition to our funding,” said David Bithell, treasurer of the Street Pastors. “We don’t have a regular income, so donations really help us. “We are very grateful to Sylvia for her courageous act, and the money raised will help us continue with the work we do for the benefit of the community.”

Open meeting The June general meeting of Ivybridge U3A will be held in The Watermark on Monday, 16 June, at 2pm. The meeting is a special Open Meeting, with members invited to bring along a friend who might wish to learn more about U3A and perhaps join one or more of the group activities available. There will be a short talk by Michael Bailey entitled 'A Brief History of a Sporting Adventure', which will be followed by a chance to chat to many of the group leaders and other members and discover what is available.

Making use of bits and pieces The successful distribution of floral sprays on National Flower Arranging Day ( 3 May), which helped to publicise the club, was reported on by club chairman, Janet Weston, when she welcomed members and visitors to the May meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club. Over 100 sprays were given to members of the public and the initiative was reported on in the local press. New area demonstrator Christine Harrington, from Rilla Mill, Cornwall, delighted members with her arrangements, entitled “What can we do with that?”, using containers made from bits and pieces people usually throw away. Her designs made use of a hessian covered cardboard box, trellis made from bits of string covered bamboo, wool covered wire, a block of insulation material covered in material to represent a gift box and a hanging basket encircled with dried copper beech buds. Christine’s expertise and imagination ensured that it was a most entertaining evening for all concerned. This month’s meeting, on 11 June, is an inhouse workshop – details from Janet Weston (01752 894643). Tickets will also be on sale for the garden meeting on 24 June at Lower Tor Mill, Kingston, the home of the club president. Ivybridge Flower Club meets at The Watermark at 7.30pm on the second Tuesday of the month. Visitors are very welcome. FIND OUT MORE: Details available from Janet Weston – 01752 894643

New President Howard Webster (left) with Philip Mann

May’s meeting of Ivybridge Probus Club saw the inauguration of Howard Webster as the club’s new president, who received the ribbon of office from outgoing president Philip Mann. Howard will be the first fixed term President, with one year in office to relish. This is a new approach adopted by the club to encourage more members to step forward for the club’s six offices. It was also announced that Michael Bailey will fill the vacancy of deputy president. The scheduled speaker, who was due to talk on the ‘Humorous Side Of Undertaking’, could not, due to an important and unexpected family event in Scotland, attend, but all being well he will speak at this month’s meeting. Howard outlined his intentions for his year in office. After consultations with members, the emphasis will be on events rather than visits or short breaks as in past Presidencies.

The nine-hole golf tournament at Wrangaton at the beginning of April attracted 10 members, and another event is planned for autumn. Other attractions announced were: The annual sailing week is scheduled for one of the last two weeks in June, weather depending. Arrangements were confirmed for the Newton Abbot Races on 14 July. The president has, by popular request, ‘volunteered’ to organise a quiz evening some time in June or July. He also put forward the idea of an evening at the theatre. Devonport Playhouse was mentioned to which a show of hands indicated it could be a success. FIND OUT MORE: Contact Bob Mailing - 01752 892255

Master chef opens curriculum kitchen

MASTERCHEF WINNER Anton Piotrowski has opened the new curriculum kitchen at Woodlands Park Primary School. Anton cut the ribbon to officially unveil the new facility on Monday, 12 May. Children from Years 3 & 4 were excited to meet a 'real chef' and had written questions to ask Anton about how he had become a

famous chef and how he felt about school. The children found out that he loves banoffee pie, he doesn’t ever cook at home and enjoyed sport at school. They also discovered that Anton now uses purple carrots at his restaurant. The children were inspired by his responses and Anton has said that he will come back to do a demonstration lesson.

DRAMA DAY

Roxy and Chelsea

KEY STAGE 1 children at Manor Primary marked the start of the summer term with a trip to Wembury Beach. They took part in a wide range of activities, including rock pool rambles, scavenger hunts and creating sand sculptures. The experience supported their current topic, ‘Ships Ahoy’, and the children returned to school full of inspiration for their work ahead!

YEARS 4 AND 5 from Stowford School had an amazing time at a drama day at Ivybridge Community College run by Devon SCITT trainee teachers. The trainees led the day and during the morning they helped the children explore the Spanish conquest of the Incas through drama, music, spanish, science and maths. The experience was a mix of short drama performances, followed by ‘hands-on’ activities. The children learnt songs and drama techniques, explored the properties of various metals, learnt some Spanish words and took part in a short performance to the rest of the group.

Tremendous Tudors at Buckland Abbey Report by Willow and Jacob in Year 4 PUPILS FROM Years 3 and 4 at Manor Primary School had a tremendous Tudor trip to Buckland Abbey as part of their history topic about this fascinating period of British history. After watching an educational video about the life and adventures of Sir Francis Drake, who came from Devon

and lived at the Abbey, they then had the opportunity to explore the old house and its colourful garden, including the stone well. They also created brass rubbings of various Tudor designs. Being amongst Tudor artefacts and walking where Drake once walked really brought the children’s history topic to life and everyone enjoyed their day!

He told the children that many also buildings, Year 4 pupils from Stowford School found the art, be it in the form of paintings, visited St John’s Church to discover what made carvings, windows or flower arrangements, it a great place to meditate and reflect. enhanced their reflection. Rev Chris Osborne welcomed the children The children had the chance to look in more and talked to them about why the church was detail at the art and objects in the church and built in the way it was, for instance its immense sketch things that they felt would help them to size was to remind people of their small part in meditate. At the end of the visit, Chris showed a huge world, with God overseeing everything, them a painting of an icon of St Mark that and that lots of people came to the church for visitors like to look at during reflection times. facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council Town Mayor

After a first year in office, I was delighted to have been duly elected as Mayor to serve for a second year at the Council meeting in May. I have very much enjoyed my first year and hope that the town will continue to work together and move forward. Following my re-election, I was very happy to present to my Charity from last year – Ivybridge Street Pastors – a cheque for £1091.45 from funds raised during the previous year (pictured). I have announced my Charity for this forthcoming year which will be the 1st and 3rd Ivybridge Scouts groups. I am pleased to hear that we have around 500 youngsters in the town who are involved in scouting and guiding. The Town Council was honoured to have the Scouts junk band entertain them at the recent Council meeting. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone for their support during my previous year and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible throughout the coming year. I have said before, that we are extremely fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the county in clean, comparatively safe and distinctive surroundings which in turn reflects the efforts and rewards of partnership working between central government, the three tiers of local government and diverse local organisations. My Deputy Mayor from last year has also been re-elected, Councillor Dave Gray-Taylor and many of you will meet him when he accompanies me to various events. Our town is unique and a very special place for us all to live and work and I hope for its future that we can all continue to strive to ensure that it remains that way. Please feel free to contact me via the Town Council if you have any matters you wish to raise. Councillor Mrs Karen Pringle

Community Action Plan

I want to advise you all that there is now a working group for a Community Action Plan for the town which will look to the future to see what services and facilities Ivybridge needs, but as importantly what can be delivered. The previous plan from 2004 had a number of priorities and the new working group will explore services, but also work on the Neighbourhood Plan and Town Team ideas to see what land needs to be allocated for the community to evolve and be more sustainable. As Town Mayor I will be chairing the group. Ivybridge has also been a forward looking town and the town crest has the epithet Bridge to the Future – so we hope that you will take the chance to respond to the consultation events and be part of making Ivybridge a place of possibilities and enlightenment, not just for now but setting the framework for future generations.

inventive performers around. He has made appearances on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Russell Howard’s Good News and Dave’s One Night Stand as well as his own show in Canada. On 28th June, Richard Digance, a BAFTA nominated entertainer, appears. He is also a Gold Award

recipient from The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters and is listed in the Virgin Anthology of Music as an influential writer of comedic songs. After a very successful previous appearance at the venue, he makes a welcome return to Ivybridge for a night of musical comedy.

Lions’ Funday

On a final note, please come along and see us at the Lions event on 5th July at Ivybridge Rugby Club, where we will have a family arts workshop. We hope that this will provide all residents with the opportunity to speak to us about the future developments and services in the town. May I wish you all an enjoyable summer. Dartmoor THE AMAZING COUNTRYSIDE ON YOUR DOORSTEP The stunningly professional services of the helicopter crews mean that if you do have a problem, the chances of a swift and happy outcome are higher than ever

Moorland safety By John Babb, a local member of Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team Plymouth

Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team Plymouth is a self-funded group of highly-trained volunteers who provide safety cover throughout South West Devon. They were called out to over 40 incidents in 2013, and while true moorland calls represented a low proportion of the total, there are some easy ways of avoiding becoming another statistic. have a confession. Like many others, I too have walked the dog along the edge of the moor, at dusk, in the mist, only to find after half an hour that Ivybridge is not where I thought it should be! Most get away without having an epic adventure, but for a very small minority the consequences can be a lot more significant. I joined the team 10 years ago, and have been involved in a wide range of callouts and incidents. We’ve helped unblock Haldon Hill during blizzards, searched flooded homes, and been tasked to look for many different people regarded by the police as vulnerable. With the exception of the rescue cover we provide for the Ten Tors Event, most of this work is now off Dartmoor. Why? In the last 20 years there have been huge improvements in outdoor safety. Goretex, fleece, GPS and mobile phones have meant that if properly prepared you are much less likely to become cold or lost, even if accidentally injured. The stunningly professional services of the helicopter crews of the Devon Air Ambulance, National Police Air Service and the RN/RAF mean that if you do have a problem, and as long as the weather is good enough to fly, the chances of a swift and happy outcome are higher than ever. Do not, though, be blasé about your surroundings. You wouldn’t go to the beach and have a swim without being careful, and the same applies to the Moor; the key is being properly prepared. It might sound like overkill if you are only going to take a stroll up to the Western Beacon (by the way, it’s a great place

• Take a map and compass and know how to use them (Could you get back to the car park if the mist came down?). • Consider taking a first aid kit, torch, whistle and survival bag. • Take with you any personal medication you may need. • A charged mobile phone can save time in an emergency, but don’t assume you will always get a signal. in the summer to see the sunset), but a little preparation can go a very long way towards staying safe.

Before you go

• Check the weather forecast. Be prepared to turn back if the weather changes. • Plan your route according to your groups ability, experience, navigation skills and knowledge of the area. • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

Clothing and footwear

• Warm, breathable clothing is essential (Not jeans or cotton shirts). • Take some spare clothing. • The most common injury is to the ankle or lower leg if you slip. This is less likely if you wear walking boots.

• Take plenty of fluids. • Simple high energy food such as dried fruit or chocolate are good.

• Protect plants and animals, and take your litter home. • Leave gates and property as you find them. • Keep dogs under control. HOW TO GAIN PEACE OF MIND OVER 50... by SELENA AYLETT, LLB Senior Wills & Trusts Consultant 42% of us in Ivybridge know a close friend or relative with dementia. My grandmother has it and I know two local people who had bad accidents last month. How will you take care of yourself or your family if you get seriously ill? Dartmoor ‘Duchess of Delight’ Elizabeth Chudleigh: Countess of Bristol: 1720-1788

rom the small village of Harford just north of Ivybridge have issued several interesting characters including Thomas Williams, Speaker of the House of Commons under Elizabeth I; John Prideaux, who walked to Oxford looking for work and ended up as Bishop of Worcester; and Elizabeth Chudleigh, who had her origins at Hall Farm. ‘Duchess of Delight’ as she became known, was tried for bigamy and had the reputation for being an outrageous character. Elizabeth spent her childhood at Hall Farm and always looked back with pleasure at this happy and innocent time of her life. It was all to change. At the age of 17, having been introduced to Court, it wasn’t long before she was planning to marry a lieutenant in the Navy, Augustus Hervey. It was imperative, however, that she keep this a secret or she’d lose her position as maid of honour to the Princess of Wales. They were married at midnight in a tiny parish church with only three witnesses, the cloak and dagger atmosphere intensified by the flickering taper part hidden under a hat for greater secrecy. A few days later the groom sailed for the West Indies and Elizabeth, putting her marriage on the back burner, lived life to the full. She did not hide her light under a bushel! In 1749, at a masked banquet at which George II was guest, she made an appearance as Iphegenia, ‘naked except for a wreath of flowers around the zone of Venus’ – her ‘dress or undress was remarkable’! Maids of honour were offended, but not so the King who was delighted and rumours arose that she became his mistress. In 1756 she gained the inheritance of Hall on the death of her mother, but unsurprisingly continued life at Court. At the age of 42 she became the mistress of the immensely wealthy Duke of Kingston and when he proposed marriage she was inclined to accept, but she had a problem in her previous union. Both Elizabeth and her then husband wished to remarry so had to work out a strategy. She decided to admit all to the Duke, who advised her to pursue the case in the ecclesiastical court and, stressing her extreme youth among other things she won; the marriage was apparently dissolved and Elizabeth and the Duke were married. Now she lived in wealth and respectability, holding balls and concerts and hunting, shooting and fishing. On one of these excursions she revisited Hall, her ‘fairyland farm’. When the Duke died in 1773, Elizabeth inherited his vast wealth, but in doing so set in motion her own downfall. A disappointed nephew challenged the Will on the grounds of an illegal marriage and Eliz-

abeth was indicted for bigamy. This was the trial of the century. Peers dressed up in their ermine, crowds lined the streets and tickets cost a fortune. Elizabeth appeared dressed in deep mourning with black gloves and a black hood on her head. She was confident in a positive outcome, but a key witness for the prosecution had been found and her story changed everything. The evidence showed that while Elizabeth was still at the Court, Hervey’s father had become ill. Scenting the perfume of an inheritance if the old man died, Elizabeth had pushed to complete a written register of her first marriage and the legal record had been duly completed. The ecclesiastical courts had not legally dissolved this marriage and so having remarried she was, unavoidably, guilty of bigamy, although, as one person remarked, ‘not intentionally’. One of the penalties for bigamy was branding on the hand, but, ever resourceful, Elizabeth claimed the privilege of peers and argued that she should not be burnt as she was a peer whichever marriage was found to be legal! Escaping to Europe, she travelled extensively, indulged in Madeira, her favourite tipple, and consorted with royalty including Tsarina Catherine. She bought an estate in Russia where she established a brandy distillery and is reported to have died on a Paris dance floor after having imbibed one too many glasses of Madeira. She died in Paris in 1788, but her apparent wish to be buried in Devon was ignored.

‘OUR PLAN’ FOR THE FUTURE Residents of Ivybridge are being urged to get involved with creating a new plan that will shape local communities for the future. Our Plan is a SHDC initiative to get everyone thinking about local requirements, aspirations and long-term priorities. It will encompass a wide range of important areas including homes, jobs and resources, and will become the dis-

trict council’s single strategic plan. Local councils are required by law to produce a plan for their area and changes to the planning system have widened the scope of Local Plans. The council has also made the decision to create a single vision stretching until 2031. The first phase of the consultation will gather information to ensure decisions reflect the needs and aspirations of the community.

SMEs - Employment Law pitfalls

T

he Forum of Private Business recently warned businesses of the risk of ignoring employment law issues. Small to medium sized businesses (SME) face the following problems on a regular basis • How to deal with employees who are not performing • How to deal with employees on long term sick leave • How to restructure the workforce by way of redundancy What are the current issues facing SMEs? (1) Flexible working & shared leave – Flexible working has progressed from requesting flexible leave from women returning from maternity leave to a formal right to request flexible working for working parents and carers. This will be further extended to cover all employees (effective from 30th June 2014). Shared parental leave will take effect in April 2015, allowing parents to share up to 52 weeks leave between them when a child is born or adopted.

Employment law is procedurally driven and demands a paper trail. Always keep records and seek legal advice before taking action. (2) Mental Health & Disability – SMEs have difficulty in dealing with the following issues – • How can affected employees be assisted? • What is the business expected to do? • What level of tolerance is needed if behaviour or absence is below the acceptable standard? Again, procedures need to be followed and contemporaneous records should be kept. (3) Tribunals – The government have introduced tribunal fees for litigants which have resulted in an initial drop in claims of 79%. Undoubtedly this will level out. There has been in an increase in the qualifying service to bring an unfair dismissal claim from one to two years. There is also now a cap on the maximum claim for compensation for unfair dismissal, which is either the lower of one year’s basic pay or the statutory maximum of £76,574.

by Dominic Tucker, of Howard & Over Solicitors

So, how can SMEs deal with their employees effectively? SMEs should seek good value legal advice to arm them with the basic tools in relation to: • Disciplinary & grievance hearings • Contracts and staff handbooks • Employee training What should SMEs do to ensure that they are compliant? SMEs should: Review policies and procedures; Address training need in respect of flexible working rights and other areas for managers; Review how to armour the business against claims from leavers.

CUT DOWN FOOD WASTE SAYS COUNCIL Ivybridge residents are being urged to help reduce landfill and save money by ceasing to put food waste in their grey bins. According to research by South Hams District Council, more than 24% of the grey bin refuse collected from households is made up of food waste, which ultimately costs council taxpayers money and contributes to climate change. Residents are being asked to either cut down on food waste or put it into the brown bin. Food waste collections in the South Hams are composted using ‘in-vessel’ composting, producing a soil conditioner which is used on local farms. The method allows all kinds of food waste, including raw meat, fish and bones, to be composted. SHDC is also working with Love Food Hate Waste to help people cut down on the amount of food they waste. The average family with children wastes around £60 worth of food every month. î Go to lovefoodhatewaste.com for tips on reducing food waste For information on household collections visit southhams.gov.uk or call 01803 861234

Enduring terrible weather conditions, five teams of students from Ivybridge Community College braved the elements and completed this year’s Ten Tors expedition. The College had a team taking part in the 35-mile expedition and one in the 45-mile expedition, while three teams of college students represented the Erme and Yealm Valley Hillwalking club, with one team on each of the 35, 45 and 55-mile challenges. The Erme and Yealm 45-mile team were the first to arrive back at Okehampton, at 11:27, and first facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine

home on their route. Three teams then all finished quite close together – the ICC 35-mile team came home at 13:04, the Erme and Yealm team completed at 13:15, and the Erme and Yealm 45-mile team finished at 13:32. There was then an anxious wait for the 55-mile team to see if they would best the 5pm deadline, having had more distance than usual left on the second day because of the route changes this year. They duly arrived with 15 minutes to spare, one of only eight teams who completed their route.
