NEWS Panto people wanted The Ivybridge Theatre Company production team is still searching for people over the age of 15 who would like to dance or fill a non-speaking role in the panto, Cinderella. They are also looking for back-stage helpers. Experience is useful but not essential, so anyone interested is asked to get in touch as soon as possible. A local youth football club is feeling top of the league after scoring a winner when they were awarded a grant which has enabled them to buy new goalposts. Ugborough Football Club, a community group run by a small team of volunteers, aims to encourage healthy and active lifestyles in young people through sport, especially football.

The new goalposts have been fully tested by the clubs’ under 8 side. Kay Winstone, a parent of one of the children, Ray, 7, said: “The club is amazing and really focused on development of each child. The new goalposts will really help us continue with this.” The club has teams affiliated to the Devon FA and play in the Pioneer Youth League. Training is

on Saturdays between 9.30-1am, all year, and league games are played on Sunday mornings from September to April. The club also enters tournaments in the summer at Ivybridge CC. It provides FA level 1 & 2 qualified coaches and is a Charter Standard accredited club (the club was regional Charter Standard Club of the Year in 2012).

WINNERS OF COMMUNITY AWARDS REVEALED The nominees for this year’s Community Awards were considered at the October meeting of Ivybridge Town Council, and the council is delighted to announce the winners. Ivybridge has many incredible volunteers, who do fantastic work in the community, and the calibre of entries this year were as high as ever. Nonetheless, the council was delighted to be able to award The Nick Cummins Community

Group of the Year Award jointly to The Bridge Youth Project in recognition of the services provided in the town on Fridays, when the refreshment vehicle is staffed by volunteers, and Ivybridge U3A for its encouragement of meeting the third generation of the town, preventing loneliness and isolation in the over 50s. There are also joint winners of The David Britton Citizen of the Year Award. Ziggy Grewal has been recognised for his contribution

and input towards sport, and in particular the organisation of the Ivybridge Big Event, while Paul Jones shares the award for his stalwart contribution to Ivybridge U3A and the production of the quarterly magazine sent to all members. The continuing, selfless, endeavours of these volunteers and the contribution they make to the town is very much appreciated. The Mayor will formally present the awards at the council meeting on 5th December, 2016.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO IMPROVE OUTDOOR AREA Around 50 members of the Manor Primary School community joined together for an ‘outdoor improvement day’. The staff, parents and children cleared out and tidied extensive overgrown areas, which are now being developed into a ‘Secret Forest’ wildlife and nature area complete with pond, a sensory

garden, vegetable production zone and fire pit. They also created a new space for the school’s chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs, which now live together in ‘Manor Farm’. The hard work was rewarded with a hot-dog lunch and toasting of marshmallows on the bonfire. Refreshments were donated by

Tesco, whose ‘Bags of Help’ scheme is funding the improvements. The school’s aim is to create a wonderful outdoor environment which will support the children’s learning and play each day, as well as increasing their understanding of nature, the environment and the importance of sustainability.

NEWS East of Ivybridge to remain as part of Ugborough after unanimous district council ruling

It was unanimously agreed at a special meeting of South Hams District Council that the area referred to as the East of Ivybridge should remain part of the Parish of Ugborough. After being approached by Ivybridge Town Council requesting a review of boundaries, the district council set up a Community Governance Review. A working group looked at the possibility of transferring the piece of land to the east of Ivybridge from the parish of Ugborough to Ivybridge. The review recommended that the East of Ivybridge remain in Ugborough, and this was unanimously agreed. Two separate public consultation rounds were held, resulting in 14 responses, with a number of

residents saying they did not want to be part of Ivybridge. Ivybridge Town Council had asked for the review as a large number of houses are due to be built in the area, and it is expected that the new residents will look to Ivybridge, rather than Ugborough, for many services, but will make no contribution towards the cost of providing them.

ROTARIANS REFLECT ON FUNDRAISING YEAR Members of the Rotary Club of Ivybridge are gearing up for it’s much anticipated Santa Sleigh tour of Ivybridge (see page 7 for full details). This year’s Christmas collections will raise funds for President Ann Brooks’ chosen charities, Devon Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support, as well as other local causes. The club has enjoyed a magnificent year of fundraising, handing over in excess of £20,000 to local and international good causes, including Jeremiah’s Journey, Devon Air Ambulance and Shel-

terbox. Other charities they have supported include the NSPCC and the Ivybridge & District Community Transport Association. Rotarians have also provided over 230 dictionaries to nine local primary schools. promoting literacy in schools, and hosted fundraising events including the duck race, golf day, stroke awareness and youth competitions with the community college including Youth Speaks, Young Chef, RYLA and Young Musician. Looking ahead to 2017, the club is aiming to provide funding each

month for one local cause. This may be helping towards a mobility issue, helping someone facing a personal set back, or supporting a local organisation trying to raise funds for a specific scheme. It’s been nearly a year since we held our first event in the building we affectionately now call The Clay Factory. We very nervously opened up our doors to the local community to come and see the space on 13th December, 2015, as we held a very successful Christmas market. Fast forward 12 months, and we’ve come a long way, and learned many lessons. One of the most pleasant has been the realisation that people hold the building in just as high a regard as we do, with many of you coming to our events to tell us stories about the building in its heyday. Another has been just how popular our project is with the arts community. For those who don’t know, part of the building has now been transformed into an arts hub called RedPod Arts. Opened by internationally-renowned artist Anthony Garratt in September as part of Plymouth Art Weekender, there are now around 18 artists on site and The Clay Factory is fast becoming known as an exciting, innovative destination for the arts. The festive season is now upon us once again, which brings not only a time of reflection for the last 12 months, but also excitement as we once again open our doors for another festive event. We invite you to join us on 3rd December as The Clay Factory & RedPod Arts host a festive art event showcasing some of the finest artistic talent in Devon. Come and meet the artists for open studios, purchase some bespoke gifts in our Christmas market, take part in an art workshop or join us for a mince pie or two as we once again bring this unique building back to life. CRAFTERS’ CHRISTMAS

Sanctuary one of the highlights of the festive period. Join the donkeys on Wednesday, 14th December. Led by Rev Chris Osborne, it is an evening of carols and songs by candlelight. There will be lots of audience participation, with traditional carols as well as Makaton based songs. The evening has a wonderful atmosphere as the congregation sing along with the children’s choir by candlelight. Refreshments will be on sale. Doors open at 6pm, with the service starting at 6.30pm.

The Ivybridge Crafters will be at the Christmas Tree Festival at St John’s Church on 3rd and 4th December. The theme of their tree is the ‘Secret Garden’. They will also being selling last year’s handmade decorations on the Saturday, a chance to buy a unique Christmas decoration for your tree.

DONKEY’S FAIR Ivybridge Donkey Sanctuary is holding its Christmas Fair on Saturday, 3rd December. You can support your local donkey sanctuary and meet the Ivybridge donkeys on the journey to Santa’s grotto. Local traders will be selling homemade Christmas crafts and goods, there will be games, a raffle, tombola, and lots of festive family fun. Refreshments, including turkey and stuffing rolls, mulled wine and warm mince pies will be on sale, too. The gift shop will be open, where you can adopt a donkey for Christmas, a lovely gift that

Children from Woodlands Park Primary School will be carol singing at The Famous Lee Mill on Wednesday, 7th December. The carols start at 4.30pm, and the store will stay open until 6pm on the evening.

The St John’s Church Christmas Tree Festival will be running over two consecutive weekends this year. It is on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th, and Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th, open from 10.30am until 4pm on all four days. There will also be stalls, a raffle, children’s activities and refreshments. Entry is free. The trees will stay on view until 5th January, 2017

ARTISAN MARKET Ivybridge Artisan Market is holding a two-day Christmas market on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th, December in The Watermark. On both days the market will be open from 9.30am until 12.45pm. CHARITY CONCERTS This Christmas, the annual Charity Christmas Concerts will raise money for CRY (Cardiac

Risk in the Young). Each week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. In 80% of cases of young sudden death, there are no prior symptoms of a heart defect. The concerts are specifically in aid of the Lee Wilson Memorial Fund, as Lee was one of these young people. The Memorial Fund was set up in Lee’s name by his parents, to fund testing for young people in his area, under the auspices of CRY. The concerts are on 20th and 21st December in Ivybridge Methodist Church. See the advert on page 12 for information on ticket sales.

CHRISTMAS IN&AROUND IVYBRIDGE FREE RANGE TURKEYS TO SUIT ALL SIZE FAMILIES The bronze turkeys at Scobbiscombe Turkeys have been making the most of the dry autumnal weather and spending a good deal of time out of their shed browsing around the paddock. They really do like grazing the grass and other plants around their field, and very usefully, stinging nettles are a favourite! Rearing turkeys to full maturity is central to their ethos, both for the benefit to the birds and also the flavour of the end product as marbling of the meat develops later. In the past, this has meant they have struggled to cater for smaller families. This year, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve introduced the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smallest breed of turkey to the flock, the aptly named Tiny, which grows to a mature weight of around 4kg; this is in contrast to the 4kg supermarket alternative, which is killed young whilst still growing quickly. Another first is that Scobbiscombe Turkeys now offer a full delivery service throughout Devon. On the website you can choose between collecting direct from the farm, picking your bird up from the Lee Mill collection point or having it delivered direct to your door.

Deck the Halls ‘cos Christmas cometh Lynn Bance, president of Ivybridge Flower Club, gives tips on how to create a simple flower arrangement for your Christmas dining table If you’ve never done an arrangement, don’t be put off. Follow a few simple steps and some basic rules and you’ll surprise yourself. I have put together a small basic arrangement and added a few seasonal touches to make it a Christmas display. First, you will need a base (it really doesn’t matter what, the foliage will cover most of it), plus a small block or round of Oasis and Oasis adhesive (fix) and a ‘frog’ (this is to secure it in the bowl), inexpensively available from a florist, some candles (not too large for this arrangement), sellotape, cocktail sticks, flowers and foliage (the latter from your garden, or a neighbour’s). To start, fix the Oasis onto your base. First, soak the Oasis block for about a minute to moisten it. Secure the Oasis ‘frog’ to your base using the Oasis fix and place the block onto the ‘frog’. You are now ready to start assembling your arrangement. Cut three candles to slightly different lengths and secure three halves of wooden cocktail sticks to the base of the candles using sellotape. Place the candles into the centre of the Oasis block, ensuring the base of the candles rest on the block – don’t push the candles into the block. The basic rule to follow with most arrangements of this type is one of symmetry. Using a diamond shape as your plan, place the foliage into the block at the

four points on the ‘diamond’. Try to keep the shape and size similar at the opposing ends. Keeping to the symmetrical rule, continue with the foliage, ensuring you build the same on opposite sides, working towards the centre. Try to lift the level of the foliage to create depth as you work toward the centre. When placing the flowers into the arrangement, use the smaller blooms at the points on the diamond and the larger ones towards the middle, keeping to the symmetry rule. The inset photo above is an example of a basic arrangement and the main one shows how you can make it more seasonal with a bit of ‘bling’ and colours that would suit your flowers or Christmas theme. @ THE WATERMARK The Churchfitters’ Christmas Cracker The Churchfitters return to The Watermark with their Christmas Cracker. They are a folk group like no other – a double bass made out of scrap metal, heart-wrenching vocals accompanied by a musical saw, footstomping fiddle mixed with infectious funk-rock rhythms. There will be a selection of favourites from their regular repertoire interlaced with traditional and original festive songs and Christmas carols. A Christmas Carol The Watermark welcomes Chapterhouse Theatre Company for their production of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens adapted by Laura Turner. Year 6 children from The Erme Primary School and Cornwood CoE Primary School took part in a taster walk to find out if the Junior Ten Tors event, taking place next June, was something they

would like to do. The seven mile hike across Dartmoor enabled them to experience first-hand some of the skills they will need to learn to take part in the challenge.

The children set off from Cadover Bridge and the route took them up tors and through numerous bogs, and was a chance for them to learn some basic navigation skills.

Pupils in years 5 and 6 at Woodlands Park Primary School wrote and conducted a special assembly in front of the school and their parents for Armistice Day. The children wrote their own poems, with some read out during the service, and children learned and performed a poem called ‘Black Saturday’ by Len Smith. At 11 o’clock, the Last Post was played by Mailie AllenWaldron on her trumpet, and this was followed by a two minute silence.

A science exhibition to showcase what had been learnt during a whole school project called ‘Let There Be Light’ was held by children at The Erme Primary School at the beginning of November.

The children excitedly shared and discussed their work, which included experiment write-ups, periscopes, shadow puppets and photos of investigations. The exhibition was a fantastic opportunity for the children to discuss their learning with their parents and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

SCHOOLS Manor Primary School choir made lots of new friends when they visited Ivydene Care Home to perform for residents. Staff and residents enjoyed a musical medley including songs celebrating harvest, Halloween and Remembrance. After a fantastic sing-along the children were treated to drinks and biscuits. The children and residents both really enjoyed having a chat and getting to know each other. The Young Shakespeare Company, a travelling group of young actors, visited Woodlands Park Primary School to perform ‘Macbeth’. The interactive performance gave the children the opportunity to play different roles in the play.

Pupils from Woodlands Park Primary School enjoyed a visit to South Devon Railway. The children dressed as wartime evacuees as part of their topic on World War II. Activities included dig for victory, learning about transport and a ride on a steam train. They also met a lady who had been a wartime evacuee, who shared her memories of the experience with the children.

It’s Christmas time, which means mulled wine, mince pies, turkey leftovers, chocolate, alcohol, plus time off work – it’s a bad combination for our waistlines and our motivation, AND it’s cold outside too!! People often go way overboard with their eating habits at Christmas, eating chocolate for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and these bad habits make us lethargic and can set us back months in our fitness goals. So, how can we survive the season without piling on extra pounds that take weeks to get rid of? We’ve come up with our Top 10 ways to enjoy a healthy and happy Christmas:

1) Ditch the Sweets Swap sugary sweets for fruit – cranberries are great at this time ofT year with only 25 calories in half a cup.

2) Family walks Walking the dog or just going for a walk together is a great way for everyone to burn calories and enjoy the winter scenery.

CHRISTMAS TAT ‘This, that and a little bit of Christmas tat’ was the subject of the demonstration at November’s meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club. Members were entertained by Charlotte Dawe, who hails from Port Isaac and is a florist working in Launceston. Her programme was extremely inspirational as the festive season approaches. The demonstrations included a number of varied designs using different mediums, from a boat design which would compliment a window position with light shining through, to using an old picture frame with flowers and greenery as an inset. Charlotte’s final arrangement was superb, using a heart design which was brought to life with a plethora of colour and of course sparkle. The evening was very well attended, with some very welcome new faces joining members. The next club meeting is on Monday, 12th December, starting at 7.30pm at The Watermark. The demonstrator will be National Demonstrator Angela Turner, and her theme is “All is Calm, All is Bright”. Visitors are welcome, £10. BUSY TIME It has been a busy time for members of Ivybridge Probus Club. Peter Brooks led a party on a visit to the Cornwall at War museum just outside Boscastle. The museum is an amazing place, which was started on an old WWII airfield by a pair of ‘collectomaniacs’ called Steve and Sheila Percy. Housed in the old Nissan huts on the edge of the airfield, it is an eclectic mixture of memorabilia including guns, vehicles and even a plane in its own hanger. For many, the highlight was a beautifully staged ‘Officer’s Mess Dinner’. The visit was enhanced by lovely weather and an excellent lunch at the Boscastle Farm Shop on the

clifftop overlooking the harbour. A large gathering enjoyed the new venue of Wrangaton Golf Club for the much-awaited quiz night. Quiz master was once again Malcolm Anderson, the leader of Ivybridge U3A Quiz Group, who was thanked for organising a delightful evening which has become a great club favourite. At the club’s November meeting, the speaker was Roger Hamilton, from Torquay Probus Club, with a talk entitled ‘how did the elephant get its trunk?’. This was a fascination talk about the evolution of the elephant, which covered many different continents and millions of years. The talk was very well received and elicited a long ‘question time’. In closing the meeting, the President reminded members that there would be no meeting in December as the scheduled date is the day before the annual Christmas Ladies’ Lunch.

CHRISTMAS SOCIAL The Christmas social of Ivybridge U3A is being held on Monday, 19th December, in the Watermark, starting ta 2pm. Open to U3A members only, attendees will enjoy mince pies, a raffle and a quiz. Normal monthly meetings resume in January. Well, Ivybridge Theatre Company has the answer – tickets for its family pantomime next February, an ideal gift for the young and old alike. COMMUNITY FOCUS Erme Valley Senior Section

Guiding builds girls’ confidence, raises their aspirations and gives them the chance to discover their full potential. It encourages them to be a powerful force for good; it also gives them a space to have fun. e are members of Erme Valley Senior Section, which is for young woman aged between 14-25 and this year we have been celebrating the 100th year anniversary of Senior Section. It is an extremely significant and important event for Girlguiding UK, and has presented us with the opportunity to complete a ‘Mission Spectacular’ badge. To achieve the badge, we must undertake particular activities that are fun, but also educate us on the importance of girlguiding. For one of the activities we completed a charity evening in which we discussed what charities are important to our society currently and debated the difference of volunteering time and giving money. This article is also part of our celebration. All the girls in Rangers discussed what makes the Senior Section important to them. We thank you for taking the time to celebrate with us by learning about our organisation and its history.

GIRLGUIDES ARE THE REAL WAGGGS The World Association of Girlguides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is the largest voluntary movement for girls and young women around the world. It works across 146 countries to help its 10 million members to learn about themselves and their world, develop leadership skills, change their communities for the better and form lifelong friendships. As well as empowering girls, WAGGGS works on an even bigger scale to improve the lives of girls around the world. In September

The History of Senior Section The Senior Section has seen many changes since its birth in 1916. The section was formed for girls who had completed their Baden Powell award but were too old for Guides. A lot of the girls who joined at this point were also working in WWI munitions factories. In 1918, the scheme for Senior Guides was published in the Girl Guides Gazette, which was mainly focused on relaxation and girls were encouraged to use the time for games, singing and dancing. The first national conference was held in Hindhead in 1922 where Rangers from all over England and Wales came together. In 1939, Rangers also helped in the Second World War effort by helping with the evacuation of children, food production and volunteering in hospitals or at air raid posts. During WW2, Rangers were enrolled in a course that gave them quick and intensive

Despite the fact that two groups would meet together, they would still be led by leaders of the same sex. In 1994, a ‘look wider’ programme was launched, which encouraged girls to explore the world they inhabit, preparing themselves for an independent future. A Ranger meeting

Rangers meet weekly, but no two evenings are the same! Some are spent working towards a badge or award, others involve learning crucial life skills such as CV writing, interview skills and budgeting. There are social evenings, too, such as a summer barbecue... Food is a common theme in all meetings! At the start of each term we have a planning meeting, so we can discuss and choose exactly what variety of fun and interesting activities we want to do. Socialising and food is one side of Rangers, but the education we receive about the world we live in and the struggles girls around the globe face make us more aware of how we can help those in need, and we feel so lucky to have an accepting group of friends and leaders to meet with each week.

Cultural and Community Associations At Rangers we are participating in activities to gain the Commonwealth badge. We hosted evenings based around particular Commonwealth countries such as Barbados, India, Australia and Zambia. During these evening we listen to a presentation, taste traditional food and participate in cultural activities based around the Rangers chosen country. Senior Section also focuses on events closer to home. Many of our young and adult leaders give up their time to support Rainbow, Brownies and Guide units. Every two years, the Girlguiding units in Erme Valley meet for a special Christmas service, which Rangers are proudly organising. They have planned craft making, singing and stories, as well as involving some of the older guiders in readings and award presentations. POPPY PAINTING AT IVYDENE Ivydene – Painting Poppies By Abby and Jess Oldaport class at the Erme Primary School visited Ivydene to paint some clay poppies with some of the residents. It was lovely to chat to them while we painted the poppies. After we had finished painting the poppies, we had some juice and a choice of cookies. Then we went into the lounge and sat with the residents. We were particularly fond off Margaret, who chatted with us. After having about 10 minutes of laughter with Margaret it was B sadly time to leave.

RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

he third Christmas of the Great War found men from Ivybridge scattered far and wide. Reggie Hawker, the wine merchant from Chantry House, spent most of 1916 patrolling the Western Desert with the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry, a cavalry regiment. In November, orders were received by the regiment to “adopt infantry drill” and on 26th December the Royal 1st Devons combined with the Royal North Devon Hussars to form the 16th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. The 2nd, 8th and 9th Devons had fought in the Somme Battle and were now worn out. The 2nd Devons spent December at rest near Vergies (France) where 10 officers and 277 men V joined them. The 8th and 9th received reinforcements from the TA Cyclist battalion.

The 4th Devons, including Private Rupert Downing (of Cadleigh), and the 6th Devons, including Private Alfred Couch (2 Charlton Terrace), were fighting the Turks in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq). Sapper Arthur Manley, whose family had the shop on Fore Street, was with Royal Engineers in Belgium; William Barter (Torr Hill Cottage) was in Greece with the Army Service Corps. Albert Henry Prout was a coal trimmer (and the cook) aboard His Majesty’s Trawler St Ives, which had been converted to a minesweeper. Albert and 10 others were killed when a mine exploded off Falmouth on 21st December. He was the son of Mary Prout (Ivybridge) and left a widow, Mary Jane Prout (Falmouth).

RANGERS The challenges set by the Moor’s weather Community Champion at Tesco Lee Mill Extra Kim TaylorLewis reports on how Tesco has been supporting the local community recently. Although we are busy at Tesco getting ready for the festive season, we have still found time to launch two really exciting schemes:

Monthly Bags of Help Bags of Help is changing and will be running monthly from the 1st December. The results of the current round are being counted and will be released in store soon.

Community Food Connection

We believe that no food that could be eaten should go to waste – not on farms or factories, not in our shops and not in our customers’ homes. That’s why we are committed to doing everything we can to make sure that when we have good quality surplus food, it is supplied to charities and community groups that help to feed those in need. Our Community Food Connection programme, which is delivered in partnership with FareShare FoodCloud, will link our stores to local charities and community groups, working together to ensure that no good food goes to waste. So far, we have donated enough food to provide over one million meals to over 2,500 charities and community groups across the UK. These include homeless shelters, substance abuse rehabilitation services, after-school clubs, foodbanks and domestic violence hostels. And we hope to work with an

Our Christmas calendar As Christmas approaches, our store calendar is filling up fast! We kick off December with a nation-wide food collection. Between 1st-3rd December we will be collecting long-life foods to supply the local food bank and help those in need this Christmas. On Sunday, 4th December, get into the Christmas spirit with Saltash Town Brass Band, who will be playing in store between 10am and 12noon. On Saturday, 10th, again between 10am and noon, we are proud to have the Military Wives Choir singing in store and helping Tesco raise money for our national charity partnership, the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK. There will also be carol singing by local schools during December. The Lions Club will be in store Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th. Last but no means least, Ivybridge Rotary Club’s Santa sleigh will be dropping by to see us from the 19th until 22nd. On behalf of all of us at Tesco Lee Mill Extra, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

After having something of an Indian summer, the Dartmoor weather has returned to “normal” – cold and wet – bringing with it its own problems and challenges, says Andrea Roberts Well where has this year gone? I say it every year, but it just seems to go by quicker and quicker each time. The amount of water run-off from the moors, if not managed properly, can do serious damage to our footpaths, bridlepaths and tracks. So we are intending to run a “Drop-in ditch dig” on Saturday, 10th December, along the bottom end of the Two Moors Way (Stowford Lane Bridlepath). From 10am to 12pm Ella and I will be along this lane clearing out the ditches and cross drains which helps to take the water off this heavily used route and minimise water erosion. We spent several thousand pounds there about five years ago having new cross drains created and resurfacing the route, but we need to maintain them. If you are free and could give a couple of minutes (or more) of your time and would like to help put something back into the community please feel free to come and join us. Gloves and tools will be provided. Oh, and chocolates/biscuits too! Recently, myself and a few other rangers have been teaming up with the local police from Ivybridge to try and stop the scramble bikers illegally using the moors around the Cadover Bridge, Shaugh Moor and Cornwood areas. Working in partnership with Sebelco and Imerys, we have been undertaking joint patrols to try and catch the bikers and “educate” them about responsible use of our protected landscape. Everybody likes to enjoy their recreation time in different ways, whether it’s to walk, horse ride, letterboxing or motor biking, but all activities must be done in a suitable area with respect and responsibility towards other recreational users and the landowners. Dartmoor, a vast wilderness, may seem an ideal place (remote, lack of houses etc) to scramble around on motorbikes, but it isn’t. So far, we have had quite a bit of success, but we will continue for as long as needed. It’s that time of the year where Swaling may now take place (November through to end of March). This is where large areas of Moorland will be burnt in a controlled manner by the farmers and landowners to manage the scrub and promote new fresh growth. This is done in conjunction with Natural England and can form part of a farmers subsidies. So if you do see the moors on fire, don’t panic, it will probably be a swale. If you are unsure, or are worried about the fire in any way, do not hesitate to call the fire and rescue service on 999. Finally, if you do over indulge over the Christmas period, don’t forget Dartmoor is a great place to walk and burn off those calories. Whether it’s an easy stroll by the Erme through Longtimber Woods, or a more energetic ramble up to Ugborough Beacon, enjoy what’s on your doorstep, for free!

Harriers’ busy time l athletics Athletes from Erme Valley Harriers continue to travel far, and not so far, in the pursuit of success during a very busy season. Three Harriers’ athletes took part in the Tavi 7, with Kate Medlicott 3rd fv45 (54.70). Dave Church ran 55.22 and Dave Hawke (70.07) was 2nd mv70. Mike Woodland made the trip to Portsmouth for the Great South Run (10 miles) and was rewarded with a time of 1.22.05. Jean Baptiste-Rouvelin (3.48.48) and Don Rigby (4.15.04) put in fantastic runs in the very tough Snowdonia Marathon. In the Dartmoor Vale races, run in the Newton Abbot/Teignbridge area, Tom Packer was 11th and 2nd senior man in the marathon with a time of 3.27.49. InWthe Half Marathon, Ken Summers was 1st mv65 in 1.48.50.

The Harriers were most impressive in the 10K, with many outstanding performances. Alison McEwing was 9th (38.08) and first lady, whilst Alison Thorn was 13th (39.05) and 1st fv40. There were also impressive performances from Paddy Trinder (10th in 38.12) and Mike Miners (11th in 38.16). The weather was ideal for the ‘off road’ Templer Ten, at Stover

School and Country Park. The Harriers were one of the best attended clubs with 15 athletes. Mike Hansen was 2nd mv55 and Kate Medlicott 1st fv45. The ladies did brilliantly with Jo Edwards, Kate Medlicott, Linda Bracher and Carol Hansen winning the ladies’ team prize. Young Sam Yearling won the one mile fun run in a time of 5.28.

Unfortunately, the Drogo 10 clashed with the Templer this year and as a result Andy Newcombe was the only Harrier who took part. Nevertheless, he had a good run to finish 90th in a time of 1.25.53. Finally, Jo Edwards set a new club fv50 record with a time of 3.29.28 at the Dublin Marathon. î ermevalleyharriers.co.uk
