Ivybridge set to get active

A party of young Ivybridge residents, lead by the town’s deputy mayor Anthony Khong, was halted on the Ivy Bridge by Ermington Parish Council chairman John Kerslake during the re-enactment of the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ on Saturday, 20th June, 2015. The ceremony re-creates the ageold ‘Battle’ between Ivybridge and Ermington parishes, when the residents of Ivybridge had to pay a forfeit of a ream of paper, a duck and a red rose to the villagers of Ermington to be allowed to cross the bridge.

Ivybridge residents have the chance to try their hand at a host of new sports and activities this month. Active Ivybridge, on Sunday, 5th July, is a fun, day-long event running from 11am until 5pm in the centre of town where people of all ages will be able to have a go at loads of different sports and activities, including table tennis, zumba, volleyball, tennis, football and running. î Find out more by seeing the advert on page 10 or go to facebook.com/activeivybridge

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? An exhibition of floral paintings, inspired by seasonal plants and flowers grown in local gardens and fields, has opened. Local artist Amanda Pellatt’s work is on show in the Atrium Gallery at The Watermark until 29th August. Amanda’s paintings are described as impressionist and the marks are made by a palette knife on handmade canvas. This series started with a bunch of mixed flowers from Ivybridge WI market. “I love finding unarranged colour in nature. I hope people enjoy viewing the paintings, and are inspired to create their own bouquets.”

Sixty squares, representing 60 church-related activities to celebrate 60 years – that was the challenge Ivybridge Methodist Church goers Joy and Chrissie set themselves as a unique way to mark their 60th birthdays last year. The fruit of their endeavour is a stunning banner (pictured), measuring over three metres tall and nearly two metres wide, which now proudly hangs in the church. Each panel represents an aspect of life at the church, such as services and festivals, the activities held there, and community groups which the church supports. The Reverend, Ralph Ward, is even immortalised with his own panel! The panels were made be volunteers representing each activity and event, which were then returned to Joy and Chrissie who spent several weeks sewing them together and putting the finishing touches to the banner.

Stepping out to beat breast cancer Ivybridge shoe shop Footnote is putting its best foot forward to help raise funds for breast cancer charity Bosombuddiesuk. Proprietors Pat White and Rose Clapcott were delighted to help when the charity put out a request for people to help to sell its trainers, and ‘boob ambassador’ Pauline Giles, founder and breast cancer survivor, visited the shop to launch the range. One-in-8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, so reach-

ing out at a young age, instilling the habit of checking themselves, is vital. Bosombuddiesuk trainers come in sizes 4-8, are extremely comfortable, and cost £24.99. They are available at Footnote Ivybridge in Glanvilles Mill and all profits go towards helping a small charity to save lives.

Could you mentor a young carer?

INDOOR TRIATHLON

Volunteer mentors are urgently needed to support young carers. The Bright Futures Project is looking for enthusiastic people to provide one-to-one support to young carers aged 14-17. Young carers provide practical and emotional support for a relative and often miss out on opportunities that other young people enjoy. Mentoring enables a young carer to take regular breaks from caring, try new activities and have fun. If you are a good listener and can commit to meeting with a young carer for a couple of hours every fortnight, the project would like to hear from you. No specific experience is required, and training and support will be provided. î For further details and an information pack, contact Jessica Lacey on 07494 421036 or email her at jessica@carewise.org.uk

Ivybridge Leisure Centre’s third indoor triathlon in aid of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth is taking place on Sunday, 6th September, 2015. The sprint distance course consists of a 752 metres swim, 20k cycle and a 5k run. It is designed to make full use of the centre’s facilities, utilising the indoor pool, purpose-built spinning studio and treadmills in the gym. There will also be a duathlon for anyone who does not want to get wet but still test their fitness. “We are so excited that the Ivybridge Leisure Centre is holding their successful triathlon again this year,” said community fundraiser at St Luke's Hospice, Plymouth, Rebecca Bristow. “We have always had such great support from the staff and customers at the centre, but we want to encourage even more to take part this year!”

IN HARMONY FOR HOSPICE WORKSHOP WONDERS

Members of Ivybridge Flower Club were asked to bring three tin cans, a bunch of orange or yellow roses and some foliage to June’s meeting, which took the form of an imposed workshop. When they arrived they found that they also had a pack of red and purple midallino sticks, some red and purple hessian and the same coloured wires. They were asked to create an exhibit using some or all of these items and the resulting designs were all very different. Pam Sparks organised the evening and complimented members on their work. The demonstrator at this month’s meeting at The Watermark is Marilyn Prout and her title will be “Would you believe it?”. Meetings begin at 7.30pm and visitors are welcome, £5. SUMMER TIME WHODUNNIT Ivybridge Theatre Company’s next production. Cards on the Table by Agatha Christie will be performed at The Watermark on Friday 14th and 15th August, starting at 7.30pm on both nights. The play is a typical ‘whodunnit’: the scene is set with Mr Shaitana, a rather strange and wealthy collector of objets d’art, hosting a dinner party for six people. A 6

WORK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN After a pleasant lunch at the Smithaleigh Hotel, President of Ivybridge Probus Club Michael Bailey was pleased to announce the recent marriage of Michael Holman to Val Mulchrone. Members offered their congratulations with a round of applause. This was followed with the announcement that a former member’s widow and a retired member were making good progress after hospitalisation. Michael then introduced the guest speaker, Peter Brooks. The subject of his talk was egyptology, or more precisely, the archeology of Egypt in the bronze age, circa 2,500BC. It is widely known that the Egyptians were master builders – the Pyramids and Valley of Kings are probably their best known building legacy – but how were the many statues and obelisks made? Peter took members through the archeological study that has gone in to finding answers to this conundrum, with the consensus now that only gemstones could have been used for cutting the hard igneous rock of which they were made to produce such beauty, smoothness and intricacy of these objects. The club’s next meeting will be on the first Tuesday in July. FIND OUT MORE: Contact secretary Bob Mailing on 01752 892255.

Curlews class at Stowford School were given the opportunity to think more deeply about how and why people raise money for charity when they spent some time with Sam and Richard Lander Stow, parents of a child in the class. Richard Lander Stow has been raising funds for a range of charities close to his heart since his wife Sam was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. He does this by taking part in a range of physical challenges for sponsorship, including running events and triathlons. Richard competes in fancy dress and brought in his costumes to show the children, as well as his medals. Sam also talked to the children about the times when she had been ill, explaining that for one period she was in bed in hospital for six months and the children could only visit her when they were healthy.

The children of Woodlands Park Primary School supported Children’s Hospice South West by participating in a ‘Wacky Wardrobe Day’. The pupils raised funds by dressing as wacky as possible. Cakes provided by the school’s teaching assistants were on sale

Children from Years 3 and 4 at Stowford School had the chance to travel 2,000 years back in time and join the mighty Roman Army in their bid to conquer the primitive Celts. Olly Martin, a soldier from the Roman Exeter Garrison, took the youngsters under command for a day and explained what the life of a Roman Soldier was like and why the Army was such a formidable force at the time. The pupils looked at equipment, rations and tools that soldiers were issued with. They also had the

and the children clearly enjoyed munching these delicious delights. The children were proud to know they were helping other children in their local area. The school raised a fantastic amount for the charity. Mrs Kelly (pictured with some pupils), who has been organising

all the charity events for the school over the past 20 years is leaving Woodlands Park, to explore other avenues. Everybody at the school would like to thank her for all her dedicated hard work in ensuring that numerous charities have benefited from many donations.

The children of Manor Primary have fantastic new sports kit thanks to sponsorship from a local business. The school now has a full set of smart polo shirts and hoodies courtesy of HotSpring Southwest, which means the school’s sports teams now enter competitions and events looking smart and ready to do their best! chance to hone their bow and sling shot skills and get a taste of Roman Army discipline, which included marching. They learnt how to make the famous testudo (tortoise) formation and then put it into practise when they advanced on a group of Celtic rebels (members of staff) who hurled missiles in the form of foam balls. It brought home to the children why the Romans were successful as they worked as a team to force the rebels back until there was no more room to retreat.

MAYOR OF IVYBRIDGE 2015-16

At the Annual meeting of Ivybridge Town Council Cllr Dave Gray-Taylor was elected as Mayor, with Cllr Anthony Khong as Deputy Mayor. Dave Gray-Taylor joined the Council in 2007, after leaving the local fire service, as he still wanted to be involved and volunteer to help the local community. He has served on various committees, Chaired Parks and Personnel Committees, and been Deputy Mayor since 2013. Dave’s earlier life included time in the Royal Navy and then the Merchant Navy, but having decided to try to settle down to life ashore he and his wife arrived in Ivybridge

for a two week holiday in 1979 from Yorkshire. They liked it so much they decided to stay! Dave found employment in the leisure industry in Plymouth in the first week and found a winter let flat in the second week, followed by a house purchase in Ivybridge soon afterwards. In 1983 he joined the local fire service in Ivybridge as a retained fire fighter and subsequently Fire fighter at Plymouth Airport. After redundancy from Plymouth he was able to transfer to Exeter Airport and still works there as a Station Manager. Dave is happily married to Linda and has two daughters. Lindsay & Dawn, who were born, educated and worked in Ivybridge before getting married and moving away. He and Linda are proud grandparents of 3 grandchildren. Dave commented that “I am delighted to have been chosen by my fellow Councillors to serve as Mayor of Ivybridge, and I intend to work to the best of my abilities for the good of Ivybridge in the coming years. I have enjoyed working with the outgoing Mayor, Cllr Karen Pringle, and value the

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council insight provided during these last two years. I have chosen two Charities to support – the Devon Air Ambulance and the local Ivybridge Branch of the Royal British Legion.”

Councillor surgeries The first Councillor Surgery was held at The Watermark on 6th June and these are continuing on a two weekly basis between 10.30am and 11.30am, with the July dates being 4th and 18th July, followed by 1st August. Cllr Alan Spencer has taken the lead on this initiative and commented: “I am really excited about this idea, as these Surgeries are going to provide the ideal opportunity for those whose voices are not normally heard during Town Council meetings to have

their say, in a friendly and informal way. Having a regular 1-to-1 sessions available with your local Town councillors is going to provide a valuable opportunity for residents to help shape the future of Ivybridge.”

Town Councillors Ivybridge now has 16 Councillors and you can see who represents your ward (West or East Ivybridge) by looking on our noticeboards, telephoning or dropping into the Town Hall in Erme Court (01752 893815). Our website www.ivybridge.gov.uk also has a lot of information about the Town Council. Contact details for Councillors are provided or come along to the Councillor surgeries or our regular Town Council, Planning or Parks meetings where you can have your say on current Ivybridge topics that are important to you.

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

THAMES TREK FOR NSPCC

RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

E

mbroidered postcards from the Great War are generally known as “WWI Silks”. They were first produced in 1914 and declined substantially from 1918 onwards, and there are none after 1923. Unique artefacts, then. The silks were generally hand embroidered on strips of silk mesh with as many as 25 on a strip, mostly produced by French and Belgian women refugees who worked in their homes and refugee camps. Belgian refugees had begun to arrive in south Devon as early as 1914 and one family was taken in by the Orleans of Rutt House, near Ivybridge. More refugees arrived and were billeted at Bantham and Frogmore, amongst other places, and there was a local branch of the Belgian

Refugee Fund. Because of their beauty and uniqueness, the Silks were wildly popular with British servicemen, and the themes for most of the silks are patriotic and feature British, French and American flags, symbols and greetings. The pictured silk is a miniature reproduction, measuring about 5cm x 2cm, of the colours of the Devonshire Regiment – the Bloody Eleventh.

An Ivybridge childminder is getting set to tackle the Thames Path Challenge walk – a 62 mile walk in 24 hours – in September to raise money for the NSPCC and she would like your support. Sadie Warnes is taking on the challenge after hearing some not very nice stories of child abuse while undertaking the required child protection train-

ing for childminders. She knows that there are a lot of children for whom there is no one to turn, but Childline, which is run by the NSPCC. Other valuable work the charity does includes ante-natal programmes to help vulnerable parents to cope with the pressures of having a new baby, counselling to help children move on after abuse, and it works with vulnerable family’s to prevent neglect. Money raised by Sadie will help support this vital work. If you would like to support Sadie, she has sponsor forms at Woodlands Park Primary School and at Ivybridge Leisure Centre or you can donate online at www.justgiving. com/sadie-warnes Alternatively, you can donate up to £10 by texting sadi75 plus the amount to 70070 (ie sadi75 £7.50 to 70070 would donate £7.50). î The Thames Path Challenge takes place on 12-13 September - thamespathchallenge.com/ the-challenge

Sustainable, local fresh fish can be delivered direct to your door

We’ll bring sole to your plaice A unique new service which delivers the best quality locally caught fish direct to your door has been started in Ivybridge. Caught On-line is the new “virtual” venture for Kev Pace and Tasha Lodge, who reluctantly had to give up the popular Ivybridge Fish Company in Glanvilles Mill after realising they were fighting a losing battle against the ever-increasing cost of maintaining a shop in the town centre. Caught On-line offers the same great personal service for which Kev and Tasha were renowned, but ordering is done by email or text (a website is currently under development). Deliveries are on Wednesday and Friday and you can specify any special instructions regarding time so that your fish arrives at a time convenient for you. Fish available and a price list is available on request, and then all you have do is give Kev and Tasha as much detail as possible about

what you’d like – eg two portions of cod (big appetite), or two portions of cod, no more than £8. Orders need to be emailed or texted before 6pm on Tuesdays for a Wednesday delivery, and 6pm Thursdays for a Friday delivery. The fish, which comes sealed in foil and is labelled, is filleted and boned unless instructed otherwise, with any other preferences, such as skin off or whole fish, needing to be stated at the time of ordering. Delivery is free for orders over £15, and for all orders less than this the charge is just £1. Land some fresh, sustainable, local fish and shellfish, prepared to the highest standard, today by having in Caught On-line and delivered straight to your door. î To order, email what you would like to ivycaughtonline@ yahoo.co.uk or text 07792 719398 or 07792 719169. Anyone for tennis? BY NIKKI SMITH, MCSP South Hams Physio

Wimbledon is upon us, which is a time when budding Djokovics and Murrays get ‘motivated’ to pick up a racket... A condition synonymous with tennis is tennis elbow, which causes pain around the outside of the elbow. Clinically known as lateral epicondylitis, it affects the common extensor muscles of the forearm on the outside of the elbow joint. It often occurs after strenuous and repetitive overuse of the muscles and tendons that straighten your wrist, which develop tiny tears and inflammation. You may notice pain on the outside of your upper forearm, just below the bend of your elbow, when lifting or bending your arm, when gripping small objects, or when twisting your forearm. You may also find it difficult to fully extend your arm. It can be caused by playing tennis, but it can also occur with other racket sports and tasks that require overuse of Sour grip and wrist.

Tips for treatment: >>Holding a cold compress against your elbow for a few minutes several times a day can help ease the pain. >>Painkillers may help reduce mild pain. Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs can help reduce inflammation. >>Physiotherapy to massage may help relieve the pain and stiffness, and improve movement in your arm. >>Acupuncture to help reduce pain and inflammation. >>Use of orthotics such as an epi-clasp… to reduce the strain in the common extensor muscles of the forearm. >>Surgery, as a last resort, to remove the damaged part of the tendon. Most cases of tennis elbow last between six months and two years. However, in about nine out of 10 cases, a full recovery is made within a year. Secrets to a good night’s sleep As we can find ourselves constantly juggling work, finances and family life, which seems to be the ‘norm’ in these modern times, it can be easy to find ourselves feeling too stressed to sleep, or waking up in the night worrying. If that sounds like you, then you might want to consider visiting Tiffany Armitage, who is an experienced Solution Focused Hypnotherapist. Her training and skills can help you to relax, with the aim of helping you to sleep better at night. We all live increasingly busy and hectic lifestyles, and modern living can see our stress levels quickly build up. Once we are asleep, our brains normally reduce our stress levels by using something called Rapid Eye Movement sleep, so we wake up in the morning feeling happy and motivated.

Unfortunately, REM is limited to 20% of our sleep pattern, so, if there is a lot of perceived stress in your life, then you quickly use up that 20% of REM. As a result, you may find that you wake up and struggle to return to sleep. Tiffany uses Solution Focused Hypnotherapy to help people focus on positive aspects of life and then encourages clients to find solutions to certain issues before a session continues by using safe hypnotic techniques to further reduce stress. It may take a number of sessions for the effect of therapy to be felt, but its effects can be very beneficial, not just for aiding sleep – the techniques can also be useful for helping with stress and anger management issues. Effective for tennis elbow

well

BY FIONA MATTHEWS Acupuncture South Devon

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is a painful condition caused by repetitive strain on the forearm extension muscle origins. The pain occurs on the outside of the elbow and can radiate up or down the arm. The most common age group to be affected is between 34-54 and tends to be more prevalent in men. While athletes and tennis players are certainly at risk, the causes are often associated with every-day living, and can be linked with using a computer, gardening, general DIY or even driving. These activities often intensify over the weekend or evenings, leading to problems. Acupuncture encourages a smooth flow of energy through the joint to release pain, reduce inflammation and promote the body’s own healing ability. The World Health Organisation acknowledges that acupuncture is an effective treatment

for tennis elbow. Acupuncture is a very safe form of treatment when practiced by a qualified practitioner, and has fewer side effects than medication. If you would like more information or to find out if traditional acupuncture could help you, contact Fiona Matthews at Acupuncture South Devon, your local practitioner from the British Acupuncture Council with clinics in Cornwood Road, Ivybridge, the Plymouth Nuffield Hospital and Exeter’s Southernhay Clinic. A local Slimming World consultant has struck gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 100 people to lose weight at her local groups every week. Leanne Tancock has been awarded GOLD status by the national slimming club because of her success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight and the super service she provides to those members. The accolade is given to consultants who consistently have 100 or more members in their group, and when the service they provide is so good that members come back week after week because they are successfully losing weight and wouldn’t miss their weekly group for anything. The award represents the highest level of service in slimming and places Ivybridge in the top 5% of the organisation’s 3,500 Sconsultants meaning Ivybridge

is home to some of the best slimming support in the UK. “I’m delighted to have received the gold award,” said Leanne. “I absolutely love my job, and am passionate about helping people to transform their lives by losing weight. “Seeing members succeed is reward enough, but being given this recognition for the whole group really is the icing on the cake. “This award belongs to the amazing Ivybridge members. They are the ones who make our groups a success, with their fabulous commitment, the wonderful support they give to each other every week and obviously their impressive weight losses while following the slimming world food optimising eating plan.” Slimming World Ivybridge Groups held every Monday and Tuesday at Chapel Place. Get back in the driving seat

{|

“What is stopping you?”

Many people, following a road traffic accident, however minor, gain a fear of getting into a car and travelling as either a driver or a passenger. This can have a profound effect on life in general, both mentally and physically. For some, the thought of approaching the car, putting the key into the ignition, holding the steering wheel, feeling the car move or even sitting in the seat as a passenger, can lead to not only thoughts racing but debilitating physical symptoms of panic which often prevents people from “sitting back in the driving seat”. Does this sound familiar? The loss of driving can mean different things to different people – getting to work, relying on public transport, taxi-

The term ‘championing’ is used a lot these days. When someone is ‘championing’ an event it implies that someone special is the star attraction and indeed, is the headline. So how would it be if you were the champion of your event, your life? What would it feel like to be happy and in control, knowing that you are that special someone in your life? At Side By Side Counselling I believe that by working through those difficult thoughts and feelings that are causing you pain, in a safe, confidential space, you can take back control. I can give you the space to collect and make sense of your thoughts and feelings in a safe, confidential space. I offer one hour free of charge so that we can meet and you get an idea of how counselling may work for you. I work with all ages, including children and young adults, involving a wide range of issues

ing the children, friends and family, the inconvenience and frustration of having a car parked outside but unable to overcome the dread or fear of using it. Ivy Counselling offer a stepby-step approach to understanding the individual level of anxiety and from this we create a bespoke package of treatment which has been tried and tested with positive results. Those who have undertaken our unique package are now “sat back in the driving seat” and feel they have regained control. For full details of the package and how you can access our service, please visit www.ivycounselling.co.uk and go to the ‘Back in the Driving Seat’ page. Helping you navigate the mortgage maze When my clients initially come to see me regarding mortgages, they have a range of questions and concerns, writes Joslyn MontgomeryPeters. However, most of the queries are the same regardless of whether they are a first time buyer (FTB) or home mover. Their main concern is whether they qualify for a mortgage. Clients who already have mortgages may also have that thought as they have heard about the changes in mortgage criteria in the news or may have had a change in their financial circumstances. They are also unsure to which mortgage type is best suited to them as they are not aware of how any potential rise in the base rate could effect their monthly repayment depending on the type of mortgage chosen. There are several types of mortgage an adviser could recommend depending on the client’s specific circumstances. The main types are: A discount mortgage is linked to the lender’s standard variable rate (SVR) and it will be reduced by a specific amount for an agreed time. During the set term, if the lender changes the SVR, the payment will also alter - if the SVR increases your payments will rise, if it decreases the payments will fall. The interest rate you are charged will always be reduced by the exact discount rate agreed at the outset. A tracker mortgage is a variable rate mortgage that will track either the Bank of England base rate or LIBOR (Libor mortgages track the London Inter Bank Offered Rate, the rate at which banks lend money to each other in the money markets. Most LIBOR mortgages track three month LIBOR) The rate is either a set amount above or below the base rate or Libor rate for a fixed period. During the agreed ‘tracker’ period the monthly payment will vary in line with any changes in either the base rate or Libor rate. Again, if the base rate or Libor rate increases your payments will rise. If they fall your payments will fall by the relevant amount. A fixed rate mortgage gives you peace of mind as your mortgage interest rate and mortgage payment is fixed for an agreed period, decided at the outset. Therefore, your monthly mortgage payment will not change for a fixed term ensuring you do not have to worry about potential interest rate rises. However, if during your fixed period the interest rates rise significantly, when your fixed term finishes you could potentially see an increase in your future monthly payments. A capped mortgage is a mixture of both tracker and fixed rate mortgages. The ‘cap’ guarantees the rate will not increase above a certain level for an agreed term. This means if the interest rate rises your payment will stay the same (once the cap is reached), however if the interest rate falls your payments will be reduced. The same applies to the interest rate rise at maturity of the term, as with the fixed mortgage. Whilst we all want the lowest rate available, often lenders will have two rates, one with a fee and one slightly higher rate with no fee. It would be down to the adviser to compare the rates, monthly mortgage repayment amount and fees involved to justify which mortage deal would be most cost effective. It may be that the lowest interest rate may not be the best option with regards to the fees involved. I hope this has been informative and should you require advice tailored to your specific needs please do not hesitate to contact me. • Next month, I will cover buy-to-let mortgages and second charges.

FOREST ADVENTURE

REPORTS

Stowford School’s Year 4 children were blessed with good weather when they headed off to the Raleigh Estate near Dartmouth for a night in the woods. For many of the youngsters it was their first night away from home. Their time started with a hike into camp; although some found this challenging, there were some amazing views

over the Dart Estuary to compensate. Once they had arrived in camp they were kept busy, undertaking a range of new experiences from constructing porches for their tents and carving toasting forks, to building and lighting fires and cooking their own tea. After a night under canvas, they all had the opportunity to try out the camp’s zip wire, be-

fore hiking out and catching the bus home. “It was a fantastic time and all of the children made the most of the experience,” said Year 4 TA, Juliet Dean. “All of them tried something new and different and, for many of them, it was a real challenge. “Above all, we had fun learning, something that cannot be overrated!”

Freeze frame of the Iceni battle

When Candice Van der Walt, parent of a Stowford child who is moving away, offered to come in to run a drama session for the Year 4 children to thank them for all they had done for her daughter, the teachers seized the chance to help them “set up their next topic. Candice focused the session on Boudica, the

Iceni Queen who very nearly brought the Romans to their knees. Through drama, the children explored the daily lives of the Iceni warriors, who were farmers and hunters, and then the lives of the Roman soldiers, who were trained professionals. This helped them understand how the Roman army, although

lesser in number, were eventually able to overcome the Iceni hoards. They then looked at the final battle, taking on first the role of the Romans and then the role of the Celts, before creating a freeze frame (above) to show what a photograph might have looked like had it been possible to take one at the time.

inthegarden Slug proof bedding plants Q: This year’s summer bedding turned into a slug-fest! Please could you recommend some summer bedding plants that slugs don’t really like? A: This is such a common problem for gardeners! Do not worry though, there are so many slug proof bedding plants out there and even if your favourites aren’t slug-proof there are numerous ways to organically tackle slug problems. Slugs don’t tend to like chewing too much so love young plants with tender leaves but will avoid plants with tough stems and leaves. They also hate plants with waxy or hairy leaves as this is uncomfortable for them to travel across. For these reasons, begonias, hardy geraniums and fuchsia plants are amongst the bedding plants seen as slug-proof. One of the keys to protecting your summer bedding plants is to water them early in the morning rather than in the evening when slugs are on the prowl. If you want to prevent slugs from feasting on some of your more tender bedding plants, why not try co-planting some strong smelling herbs. Herbs like rosemary and lavender are a great choice as they give off fantastic essential oils that slugs can’t stomach.

Water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Remember, though, that containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in very dry periods - pay particular attention to camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas which will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Mulch around the roots when moist to help avoid this. Keep your pond topped up with fresh water - a build up of algae in warm weather can be toxic, if not fatal, for animals.

Pests Pests love warm weather, so be on your guard! Caterpillar and aphid infestations can be dealt with by hand if caught early enough, but should the situation career out of control you will have to resort to insecticides or grin and bear it! Greenfly and blackfly especially love the heat

Sow salads and leaves TOP T IP 'little and often' in short runs - every fortnight should give you a continuous supply. For a quicker harvest, plant semigrown teenage salads and serve drizzled with olive oil, rich balsamic vinegar and snipped chives and mint.

and don’t forget aphids and other sap-sucking insects can transmit viruses so don’t give in to the sympathy vote. Try to attract beneficial insects by growing a wide variety of plants - ladybirds and their larvae are consummate aphid predators, as are lacewings and even wasps.

Birds As summer wears on and the ground hardens, it becomes more difficult for birds to forage for food. So do please put out food to supplement their diet and help build reserves for winter.

Lawns Keep mowing but raise the height of your blades if the weather remains hot. Feed established lawns if you haven’t already done so with a summer lawn feed. If your lawn is mossy or full of weeds, use a feed with mosskiller or weedkiller. If you have the lot, use combined feed, weed and mosskiller!

Add your grass clippings to the compost heap in shallow layers. A huge dollop will only turn slimy and spoil your compost. Don’t let newly laid lawns dry out in hot weather – water in the evenings and if there is a heat wave, consider leaving the lawn longer than usual just to help it through the hot weather. If you are planning to seed a new lawn in the autumn, start preparing the area to allow the earth time to settle.

Kitchen garden Water regularly in dry weather and keep picking! Keep greenhouses shaded on hot days to prevent their turning into furnaces. Spray the floor with water in the morning to create a humid atmosphere ideal for greenhouse plants. Do not do this at night as the humidity and lower temperatures can encourage pests and disease. from dvice ing a rts at n e d Gar he expe t

ENDURANCE RUNNERS IN TOP FORM

NETBALL LADIES ARE CHAMPIONS IN FIRST SEASON l netball Newly-formed Ivy Ladies netball team have been crowned Division 5 champions in their inaugural season in the Plymouth & District Netball League. The team stormed to the league title, losing just two league fixtures during the season, and have been promoted to division four for next season. The side confirmed their champions status with thumping victories in their last couple of fixtures of the season, winning 28-8 against Paul Inch Pumas and 238 versus Fay Pedler Misfits. The team’s success has been based on a great spirit throughout the squad and a fast, skillful style which saw them win 13 out of 15 games. Club captain Claire Plumb said: “Through the love of netball we were all determined to be the best to win.” While the title was secured with a match left to play, the team have to wait until the league presentation before they get their hands on the league trophy. 38

“The club would like to thank Manning’s Financial Advisors, Devon Fit Camp and Lewis Marine for their support and publicity during the side’s first season,” said club secretary and treasurer, Emma Tayler . The team do not intend to rest on their league-winning laurels, though. Training will continue throughout the summer on Sunday mornings at the Ivybridge Community College, 9.3010.30am. It is a turn-up-and-play club, with each training session costing £2.50. The club has enjoyed success off the court, too, attracting a good number of players to training sessions. As a result, it will be entering a second team, Ivy Ladies Too, next season, and if numbers and attendance warrant it, they would consider starting a 3rd team running as well.

Cricketers make solid start to season The senior teams of Ivybridge Cricket Club have made steady starts to the season. They all sit comfortably in mid table in their respective leagues – the 1st XI in the Devon League B Division, the seconds in B Division (west) and the Sunday X1 in the South Devon Cricket League (SDCL) – with plenty still to play for in the second half of the season. New players at all levels are always welcome. Adult training is on Tuesdays at 6pm. Colts (7 years and upwards) training is held on Fridays at 6pm. Cricket @ Filham Park in July 4th: 1st XI v. Three hardy athletes from Erme Valley Harriers are always up for a challenge and 32 miles across Dartmoor fits that category. In preparation for the Dartmoor Discovery Ultra Marathon, Craig MacAlpine, Don Rigby and Jean Baptiste Rouvelin had completed the Yorkshire Peaks of Pen-yGhent, Whernside and Ingleborough – a distance of 24 miles. Rigby and Baptiste Rouvelin then completed the St Austell Trail Marathon, with Rigby running 4.01.04 and Baptiste Rouvelin 4.03.53. MacAlpine in the meantime made his way to the Lake District to compete in the Duddon Fell Race. This 18 mile race around the head of the Duddon Valley has 6,000ft of climbing. This year was a championship fell race, with the top fell runners from across the UK. McAlpine came 186th out of 299 runners in a time of 4 hours and 11 minutes. The intrepid trio (pictured) all did extremely well in the Dartmoor Discovery Ultra Marathon. MacAlpine was 21st (4.32.25), Baptiste Rouvelin 45th (5.05.30) and Rigby 64th (5.17.24). There were 194 finishers. Some athletes completed in the much shorter ‘Muskies Madness’, a tough multi-terrain race over 5.5 miles. There was a good Harriers turnout, with Andy Trigg 2nd mv50 and Russ Mogridge 3rd mv50. The Harriers are now preparing for their popular relays. These take place on Friday, 3rd July, at 7pm, starting and finishing at Ivybridge Rugby Club. Four athletes all run 2.5 miles over a single lap course. There are prizes, for each team member, in various different categories, including juniors (under 18s), seniors, veterans and non-running club. î For more information go to www.ermevallyharriers.co.uk
