NEWS Tea party hosts needed

Is this the earliest painting of the Ivy Bridge? The Ivy Bridge, by John Inigo Richards, painted in 1790, is the earliest painting of the town’s iconic bridge that research by the Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group has found. In all, the group has traced over 40 other paintings of the bridge, the last one in 1890.

Richards’ charming landscape (above) shows the old gothic bridge over the River Erme. It was clearly a favourite subject with Richards, who painted it on several occasions, both in oil and watercolour. Richards could be said to have

anticipated its appeal as a picturesque subject, for the rustic Ivy Bridge was later painted by numerous artists, including Paul Sandby in 1779 and most famously, J.M.W. Turner in 1812. The painting was acquired by the Tate in 1967.

IS THE LABOUR PARTY RELEVANT IN THE SOUTH WEST? The South Hams branch of the Labour Party is holding a ‘Question Time’ style event in Ivybridge to give local people the chance to question senior members of the local party about what Labour has to offer people in the South West. Why Labour for the South West and why now? is a public meeting being held on Thursday, 17th March, in The Watermark. Ben Bradshaw, the MP for Exeter, and only Labour MP in the South West, will be speaking for a few minutes on the theme of Why Labour for the South West and will take questions from the public. Ben will be joined by Ivybridge resident Gareth Derrick, a former Royal Navy officer who has been selected to be Labour’s candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner, and Sarah Staples, a

Contact the Elderly is a National charity with a thriving branch in Ivybridge. It’s aim is to alleviate loneliness among elderly isolated people. Monthly tea parties, held on a Sunday afternoon, usually in a volunteer's home in Ivybridge, have become eagerly-awaited and anticipated by guests and are always thoroughly enjoyed. If you would like to host a tea party, they would love to hear from you. You need to live in Ivybridge, have a downstairs loo and no steps to negotiate to your home. They are also looking for volunteer drivers who would be willing to drive people to and from a party. Perhaps you would like to be a guest? NEWS Calling Ivybridge community groups

Staff and nursery children at Stowford School had an exciting time when they became pirates for a day. They learnt how to talk and act like pirates, found a message in a bottle and followed the map to hunt for treasure in the garden. They also enjoyed pirate decorated biscuits, painted parrots and made pirate jewellery, masks and eye patches. They finished their day by making a ship, singing sea shanties and walking the plank!

If you are asking any of these questions, join PL:21 Transition Initiative on Saturday, 19th March, at The Watermark from 10am-1pm at the 2016 Sustainable Energy Fair. There is something for everyone at the Sustainable Energy Fair. Little ones can burn off some energy in a small soft play area, teenagers can whizz up a drink on the Smoothie Bike, and the adults can find out how to reduce their bills, and which renewable energy would work best for their

property. There will also be talks from Citizens Advice, international climate campaigners and qualified energy advisors. There will also be a presentation telling people about the 4.3MW Portworthy Solar Array near Lee Moor, which is now entirely community owned and will generate enough energy for 1,300 typical homes. In January, PL:21 worked with community energy company Bath & West Community Energy to successfully raise £1.68 million, with a bond offer, to purchase the array. The Portworthy Array project should provide an annual Com-

munity Fund in excess of £20,000 to fund projects and initiatives in the parishes closest to the array. The first payment will be received in autumn this year, and they would love to know how you think the money should be spent. The Sustainable Energy Fair is supported by a grant from the RegenSW Community Energy Accelerator Devon County Council Fund. PL:21 will also be at the RegenSW Smart Energy Marketplace on 17th March at Sandy Park, Exeter.

Bowlers support riding charity Ivybridge Short Mat Bowls Club’s annual Charity Day raised £900 for Erme Valley Riding for the Disabled, a local charity which provides riding experience to help children and adults with numerous disabilities. Ivybridge Heritage and Archives Group is hoping to buy an interactive information kiosk to be placed in The Watermark. The kiosk will enable the group to make more of their archives and research available to the community while they await the opening of the Heritage Centre in Stowford Mill. As the memory of the kiosk is quite large, the group thought other community groups might like to have a ‘page’ on which they could publicise forthcoming events, contact information and anything else they wanted to communicate to the local community. There would be a small annual fee, but this would include the ability to update information on a monthly basis. Children’s centre on the move SeaMoor Children’s Centre is on the move at the end of March, when it will become part of South Hams Children’s Centres and be based in Totnes. However, it will continue to run services dedicated to all under 5s and their families in Ivybridge and its outlying areas. A timetable for the summer term is currently being planned, which will be available online at www.southhamschildrens centres.org.uk from the 21st March 2016. The centre is organising a free Easter party on 10th March at The Watermark - see page 10 for details.

ROMANTIC EVENING Romance was in the air at the February meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club when the demonstrator was Lisa Davies, owner of Studio Flowers of Churchstow. She told members how she began her journey into floristry by helping out in a flower shop as a 13 year old, on Saturday mornings and ending up with her own business. Valentine’s Day is obviously one of the busiest days in a florist’s year and one of her biggest bouquets one year consisted of 101 red roses – purchased for a very lucky lady! Lisa made seven differing designs based on her title “Romance”, using beautifully conditioned flowers and plant material, with the addition of hearts in varying forms. The next meeting is on Monday, 14th March, at The Watermark, at 7.30pm, when club member Avril Eaves will lead an in-house workshop based on ‘Transformations’. Visitors are welcome, £6. ISLAND STORY Ivybridge U3A gathers for its March general meeting at The Watermark on Monday, 21st March, starting at 2 pm. The speaker will be Jonathan Parsons, who will talk about offshore islands. Located a few miles off the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast are the stunning sister islands of Skomer and Skokholm. They are known both for their stunning wildlife and interesting human history and have played a big part in groundbreaking scientific research. Ivybridge Theatre Company’s production of ‘The Scatterbrained Scarecrow of Oz’ was successfully performed to over 400 people at The Watermark over the first weekend of the February half term holiday.

Excited children (and adults!) cheered Dorothy and her trusted friends – Toto the mouse, Scarecrow, Lion and Tinman – and booed the Wicked Witch when she captured them all. There were many surprises and twists and turns along the way, but good triumphed over evil in the end and everyone went home happy! All the cast did themselves proud, transporting the audience to the magical land of Oz .There were some exceptional, stand-out performances; wonderful colourful costumes; special lighting and wind effects and ingenious props – including a bubbling, green cauldron and a Wizard sized box! The company is now busy planning its next production, details to be released soon. ITC meet at Chapel Place, Fore Street, every Wednesday at 7.30pm. CLUB GETTING SOCIAL Twenty-five members of Ivybridge Probus Club were joined by two guests for its February lunchtime meeting. President Michael Bailey welcomed the two guests, Bob Hughes, who was the guest of Philip Dredge, and Peter Brooks,

who was the guest of Bob Di’Silva. Members look forward to both joining the club, which would boost the membership to 36, with three new members joining already this year. Members were presented with the club’s financial well-being for 2015 by treasurer Steve Woodcook. Aside from a couple of technical questions, members were satisfied with the comfortable balance sheet and cash surplus. Steve was given a vote of thanks and confidence led by the President Michael Bailey. After a delightful lunch, members were invited to indicate their interest in various club social events, starting with the Jazz Cabaret featuring Louise Parker. Two tables of eight members and wives was an immediate response. A show of hands was asked for on the possibility of a members and wives visit in June to Newton Abbot races, which is now an annual fixture; nine members expressing interest this year. Another possibility floated was a mid-week, three night break at one of the Brand Hotels, Sidmouth. Watch this space! Closer to home was the possibility of an evening at the Devonport Play house to see “Legally Blonde.” Other ideas include a sailing week, golf days and quiz nights. New physio classes South Hams Physio is launching two new groups for people who find it difficult to exercise due to physical or mental health issues. The Accessible Exercise Group is aimed at people who find it difficult to exercise due to a neurological condition, eg stroke, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, etc, or due to age and joint problems, balance or falls. The group will help improve balance, strength and fitness, with exercises to music, standing or sitting. The Hydrotherapy class is for those who find it difficult to exercise due to pain, joint stiffness or gravity, but who are looking for ways to improve their range of movement, strength and fitness in a comfortable, weightless environment. The classes will be led by Chartered Physiotherapists from South Hams Physio.

SCHOOLS Pupils at Stowford School have a new way to develop and challenge their reading skills, thanks to the Stowford Book Track. Designed by Year 2 teacher Lucy Burrows and TA Jenny Medland, who runs the school library, the scheme challenges pupils to read 50 books to complete the award. While children can choose the majority of books along the way, every fifth book has to be picked from a specially selected range of books written for an audience of their age. The aim is to encourage children to experience different authors and genres and broaden their literary taste and appreciation. Once they have read a challenge book, the children will have the opportunity to discuss it with one of the librarians before being awarded a stamp in their tracking books.

Children from Manor Primary school were invited to participate alongside pupils from schools across Devon in the ‘Winter Ability Games ‘at the Life Centre in Plymouth at the end of January. The children were allowed to take part in a wide variety of fantastic activities which included

laser pistol shooting, archery, tennis ,new age curling , contemporary dance, bouldering and finally climbing. The children were really enthusiastic and tried as many sports as they could, returning to school with medals and certificates to commemorate the day.

Year 4 children from The Erme Primary were visited by artists Alex, Sophie and Bee Bee. In the morning, the children took part in a number of musical activities, including learning new songs. Other activities included drawing and creating stories. In the afternoon, the children

Foundation classes at Stowford School were teaming with well known and well-loved characters from nursery rhymes, as they celebrated a “Once Upon a Rhyme” day. During the day all the children could earn a special certificate if they could recite a nursery

shared their work with the residents of Ivydene Care Home. They talked to them about their drawings, with the residents sharing their drawings with the children in return. The afternoon was rounded off with the children and residents singing songs together.

There was plenty of baking, too, as the children had the opportunity to make story themed biscuits and some of the Queen of Heart’s jam tarts. Foundation teaching assistant Karen Freeland said: “The children had a fantastic time and, thanks to parent volunteers, they were able to do an amazing range of activities. The children, and staff, really enjoyed themselves - it isn’t often you have the chance to make tarts with the gingerbread man and the big bad wolf!” The Ivybridge magazine

t was estimated that a wounded soldier needed on average 20 dressing changes and that 50 million dressings per year would be needed by the army. Cotton dressings became expensive and in short supply, but Sphagnum moss had been used since ancient times as a dressing as it was found to have both absorbent and antiseptic properties. Two ounces of dry moss could absorb two pounds of liquid. It was approved as a dressing in 1916 by the War Office. Sphagnum moss grows in waterlogged conditions like those found on Dartmoor behind Ivybridge. Women set to work collecting it. Princetown became the headquarters, with Totnes and

Dartmouth local processing centres. Women travelled to Dartmoor using trains from Totnes station to Buckfastleigh, Ivybridge or South Brent. The volume of dressings produced by the ladies of Totnes was enormous. Over 27,000 dressings made from Dartmoor moss were sent to Exeter in two years. The antiseptic was later identified as iodine, naturally occurring in the moss. It is a pleasure for me to write these short, monthly accounts of 100 years ago. Wildlife crime is an

ever-present problem in the countryside and rural communities. To tackle it, the police rely heavily on information from the community and without your help the battle against poaching will be an uphill struggle. It is sometimes thought that poaching is in some way a victimless crime, going on in the countryside for hundreds of years. This could not be further from the truth. Poachers are largely in it just to make money; locally, we’ve seen that there are links between poaching and other types of crime.

Poachers normally operate with complete disregard for notions of land ownership or property, often causing extensive damage to fencing and gates. Animals are often subjected to cruelty and unnecessary suffering, be this the dogs used to catch wildlife or the wildlife itself. Poaching also supplies an illicit trade in meat, which does not conform with environmental health standards, presenting a risk to public safety. We urge anyone with any information about this activity to come forward, either via the police control room on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Budget Ivybridge Town Council considered its budget in January 2016 and approved a small increase of £3.24 per year per household for a Band D property. In addition to raising money from the Council Tax, this Council tries to ensure that its services are run efficiently to cover their costs, but in the case of the parks that is not the case as open spaces offer free access, with no car parking charges. Investment in the parks areas is being accessed via funds like the South Hams District Council Greenspaces fund, which is supported by the Langage Energy fund, and areas like Victoria Park, MacAndrews Field, Harrys Patch and along the riverside near the underpass are being targeted for tree and shrub planting to enhance our environment. 106 agreements, where new development puts pressure on our current facilities, are also being discussed to improve our sporting and recreation opportunities. An ambitious project in Longtimber Woods to reinstate a pedestrian bridge over the River Erme is being investigated in conjunction with the Ivybridge Heritage Group and it is hoped that a bid to a regional funding scheme 18

CORNWOOD CHURCH CONCERT Cornwood Church launches it fundraising events for 2016, to raise much-needed money to mend the church’s roof, which needs urgent attention, with a concert this month. The Sir Joshua Reynolds Choir will

be in concert at the church on Saturday, 19th March, with a set that will include John Rutter’s Requiem. The concert begins at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7.50, to include a glass of wine and nibbles, and are available by calling 01752 837441 or 893950.

RANGERS Spring is here Sheep and lambs are common on the moor at this time of year, says DNPA Ranger Andrea Roberts, so dog owners are reminded to keep their animals under control At this time of the year the local farmers are very busy with lambing, often staying up through the night to help deliver the lambs in their sheds/barns. Normally, not long after the lambs are born, they are often turned out into the nearby fields and up onto the moorland. These lambs are not only vital to the farmers’ business profits, but many will also mature into sheep and become “eco lawnmowers” – helping to manage the vegetation on the open moorland. They play a vital role in ensuring the vegetation balance needed on the moor to encourage other animals to live and thrive here, including birds such as the Wheatear, the Meadow pipit and the rare Ring Ouzel. Surveys have shown that Dartmoor is a stronghold for species that have declined elsewhere in the UK, such as the Snipe and the Skylark. With all this in mind, it is heartbreaking to come across sheep and lambs on the moor which have been savaged and attacked by dogs, often not killed, but left with terrible injuries. That is why over the course of the next couple of months you will see our notices being put up across the moor asking dog owners to please keep their dogs under close control. If you do happen to come across an injured sheep, pony or cow on Dartmoor, please call the livestock protection officer on 07873 587561 with a good location (including Grid Reference if possible) and any markings on the animal. Most importantly, if you do come across a lamb which may appear to be on its own, please DO NOT PICK IT UP. Normally the mother isn’t too far away and will return, but again if you have any concerns call the number above.

How to arrange flowers using a small vase FLOWER ARRANGING WITH IVYBRIDGE FLOWER CLUB

You will need: • A vase of your choice • A block of oasis and pot tape • Bunch of small flowers e.g Roses or Lisianthus • Bunch of gypsophila • A variety of foliage with small leaves, eg pittosporum/tree ivy etc

How to arrange your flowers: 1. Soak the oasis in water by letting it sink into the water -do not press it down under the water . 2. Cut the oasis to fit into the top of your vase - secure it in place with pot tape.

3. Place the foliage into the oasis creating the shape of your design - place shorter stems at the top and longer stems at the sides as shown in the photo. 4. Place the roses to create a semi - circular shape. You will need to cut the stems quite short on the flowers at the top and leave them longer on the ones down the sides. 5. Place the remaining roses on both sides of your design. 6. Add the gypsophila throughout the arrangement. See page 6 for the latest news from Ivybridge Flower Club.

At this time of the year Rangers are normally finishing off all of their contracts works, path surveys and erosion surveys ready for the new financial year. However, the wet weather over the winter has put back a lot of these works, so we are all working hard to get as much done as we can. The amount of water which has fallen on the moor has not only eroded several paths and tracks, but the wet ground has made it very difficult to enable access for our vehicles and machinery in a lot of areas. Leaks such as this are known as ‘stress incontinence’. They occur when the pressure within our abdomen (intra-abdominal pressure) exceeds the strength of our pelvic floor muscles. They are not a sign that you should stop exercising (which would otherwise be great for your health in many other ways) but that you should adapt your exercise routine appropriately while training your pelvic floor muscles to cope with the activities you want to do. A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust the power to act for you in financial and health and welfare matters should you lose mental capacity. It could be, for instance, that you have had a fall and are unconscious in hospital or have the onset of dementia. The person or persons you appoint are known as your attorneys and can include your spouse, your adult children or trusted friends. Strictly speaking, everyone needs one because of the terrible problems that can occur if you lost mental capacity without one, but the over 60s are particularly

vulnerable and everyone over 60 should have one. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, loss of mental capacity can result in banks freezing joint accounts, and the lack of legal power of anyone, even a spouse to fight those battles for you on health and welfare issue. This could, for instance, be that the local council have sent you to an inferior care home. These are just some of the problems that can occur.

How does it work? First, we go through the various options with you, helping you to decide who your attorneys should be, and finding out your wishes, such as: do you wish to give your attorneys the power to give or refuse consent for life sustaining treatment? Do you want your attorneys to be able to

act for you in financial matters straight away, or only if you have lost mental capacity? Once all this is recorded on an instruction sheet, our office staff then create the pack of documents which include the Powers of Attorney, known as the instrument, the application to The Office of The Public Guardian (OPG) to register it, and paperwork for any exemption or remission of OPG charges that you may be entitled to. We then see you again to go through the paperwork, which is quite substantial, get your signatures and apply to the OPG to have it registered. The whole procedure takes on average about four months. CHARITY LEADS EASTER CYCLE PL21 Transition Town and environmental charity Sustrans have teamed up for the second year to provide lead cycle rides from Ivybridge. The first event, on Easter Monday, 28th March, is a lead bike ride through the foothills of Dartmoor. Starting at Ivybridge, the ride follows little lanes on the National Cycle Network, discovering ancient river valleys, leafy woodlands, wildflower meadows and remote farms. The journey goes through South Brent, Shipley Bridge and Skerraton to the South Devon Steam Railway at Buckfastleigh, where there will be a break for coffee and cake. The total distance of the ride will be 24 miles. In places, the route is hilly, but there will be plenty of time and a back-up car will be provided. For the 28th year Erme Valley Harriers is proud to present the 2016 Ivybridge 10K Road Race. This year’s edition of the race is on Saturday, 7th May, 2016, starting at 6.30pm. The entry limit remains at 775 and athletes are advised to enter early as last year’s event was full well before race day. Minimum age is 15 years old. This spectacularly scenic race starts in Ivybridge Station car park and finishes at Ivybridge Rugby Club. There is again an extensive prize list. Most categories will receive a sports voucher for 1st and 2nd. There is also a £100 cash prize if a new male or female course record is set. All finishers will get the usual unique high quality race memento T-shirt. The entry fee has been held for the third year at £13, or £11 for those with an England Athletics Competition License. Pre and post race sports massage will be available at race HQ (Ivybridge Rugby Club), where there is changing, showers, refreshments and a licensed bar. Erme Valley Harriers’ athletes were in tremendous form at the First Chance 10K in Exeter, the first major road race of the year which was run in ‘near perfect’ conditions; it was dry, there was no wind, a good temperature and a ‘flat course’. Andy Norris was the first Harrier home in 7th place and 1st mv40, whilst Allister Bristow was 14th and 2nd mv40. The Harriers’ ladies did brilliantly as Alison McEwing was 2nd female lady and broke her own ladies club record with a time of 37.19. Alison Thorn was 1st fv40 and set a new club vet 40 record with a time of 37.47. Cleo Perry was 2nd fv40, whilst Jo Edwards was 2nd fv50. Nineteen Harriers’ ran, with eight athletes getting under 40 minutes. McEwing continued her good form at the Braunton 10, where she came home as first lady in a time of 66.40. Cleo Perry ran well at the Fulfords 5 and was 1st fv40. McEwing and Thorn returned to Exeter for the Half Marathon with McEwing 1st lady in a time of 1.22.18 and Thorn 3rd lady and 1st fv40 in a time of 1.24.27. Emma Lake was 2nd fv40. Brown claimed his second victory in the Armada Athletics Winter 3K Series in Central Park, Plymouth, and was 2nd u17 boy at the Frank Elford Sports Westward Cross Country League, held at a very muddy Stover School. Cleo Perry was also impressive at Stover School, coming home as 3rd lady and first over 40, and pushing Cornwall AC’s veteran international Emma Stepto hard all the way. Also on the cross country scene Will Battershill, the Great Britain youth international won the senior boys’ category at the South West Schools’ Cross Country Championship in Cheltenham. Battershill represented Devon.
