NEWS Lee Mill wood is Trust’s 50th nature reserve

THE MAGNIFICENT 7 Seven girls from Woodlands Park Primary School have raised a whopping £237.43 for Cancer Research. The magnificent seven, Molly, Ella, Lola, Poppy and Teigan, wanted to make a difference and have a positive impact, so they approached headteacher Sarah Rogers to ask if they could organ-

ise their own fundraising event. Over the following weeks, the inspirational girls held regular meetings to organise their efforts, produced posters to publicise the event and began furiously making loom bands, friendship bracelets and baking cakes to sell. At the end of February they held their sale during break-time, attract-

ing long queues and lots of pocket money from the rest of the school. By the end of break they had completely sold out and had raised an impressive amount of money. The staff and children at Woodlands Park are extremely proud of the girls for demonstrating such commitment, organisation, team work and community spirit.

LAST CHANCE TO COMMENT ON LOCAL PLAN People in Ivybridge are being urged to comment on proposals outlined in a Joint Local Plan ahead of it being submitted to a Government inspector. A final consultation is now open (until 26th April) on the plan, which looks at where development, infrastructure and homes could go across the South Hams, Plymouth and West Devon area over the next 18 years. The proposals have been

approved by all three councils recently, but the Planning Inspector is seeking views on whether the plan is sound and meets the tests set out in the National Planning Policy Framework, ie whether: • The three councils have planned for the area’s housing, employment and infrastructure needs • The plan is based on sound evidence • The plan can be delivered by 2034; and

• The plan is consistent with national policy and enables sustainable development. Comments need to relate to the soundness of the plan or to its compliance with legal requirements. î Comment on the plan at http:// plymouth.consult.limehouse.co.uk/ portal/planning/jlp Alternatively, email plymouthplan@plymouth. gov.uk, strategic.planning@swdevon.gov.uk or post your comments

DISCOVER SCENIC LOCAL ROUTES AND TRAILS ON GUIDED BIKE RIDES Two guided bike rides which will allow riders to discover scenic routes and trails near Ivybridge are being held this month. On Sunday, 9 April, join local volunteers, led by Sustrans, for a guided ride to discover one of Devon’s wonderful ridge roads. Starting in Ivybridge or South Brent, the route will follow scenic lanes with stunning views over the South Hams and Dartmoor.

There is a longer, circular ride of 30 miles (which includes a lunch stop in a pub) and a short alternative of 14 miles, but this does not include the ridge road. The ride is of moderate difficulty, with some steep hills. On Wednesday, 19 April, discover The Dartmoor Way on an evening guided ride to Cornwood. The first stage is a six mile ride to Cornwood, where

there will be a stop for light refreshments at the pub, before continuing along little lanes to Smithaleigh and return along a dedicated path. In total, the route is a circular ride of 14 miles. The ride is between 6:30pm8:30pm, starting off from The Watermark in Ivybridge. î For more information on both rides, and to book, go to sustrans. org.uk/events

A woodland near Lee Mill has become Devon Wildlife Trust’s 50th nature reserve. New England Wood, south of Lee Mill, is a 50-acre broad-leaf woodland with the River Yealm flowing through it. The wildlife haven joins a list of some of the county’s most spectacular wild places cared for by the Trust. DWT’s Steve Hussey said: “Our first nature reserve was Lady’s Wood, near Ivybridge. Now we’ve secured our 50th in the shape of New England Wood. “Despite being separated in time by more than five decades, the two nature reserves are, in fact, only a few miles apart.” New England Wood is part of a bigger wildlife-rich landscape between Ivybridge and Plymouth. Peregrine falcons nest nearby, and to the south is further woodland, and fields. Together, these places form a wonderful green space for local people and wildlife.

Mutual support at carers’ group Meet other carers who look after family or friends for mutual support at the Ivybridge Carers’ Group. It meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Ivybridge Library between 11am and 12.30pm. The April meeting is on Wednesday 5th. î For more details call Sarah Tuhill on 03456 434 435 or visit devoncarers.org.uk

NEWS Local London Marathon runners

Dentist tackling marathon for family charity

Swimmers at Stowford School have smart new gear to wear when representing the school thanks to sponsorship from a local business. Ivybridge Accountants has donated

swimming caps and t-shirts with the school’s logo on for the children to wear at swimming events. Simon Jilks and Lisa Lines, directors at Ivybridge Accountants, comment-

ed: “We are proud to sponsor a local school and help promote health and fitness amongst young people in the community. We wish Stowford the very best of luck in upcoming galas.”

NEW SWIMMING POOL PART OF LEISURE CENTRE’S MULTI-MILLION POUND UPGRADE The new operator of Ivybridge Leisure Centre has announced a £6million refurbishment of the facility, which will include a long-awaited new swimming pool. A 25-metre pool, possibly with a retractable roof, will be built where the outdoor pool used to be, and gym and fitness facilities will also be upgraded as part of the plans unveiled by Fusion Lifestyle.

REGISTER TO VOTE Devon County Council elections take place on 4th May, 2017. To be able to vote in the election, you must be registered to vote. The deadline for registering to vote in the upcoming elections is 13th April, 2017. Register online at gov.uk or contact South Hams District Council. As the largest independent charity operating community sports, fitness and leisure centres in the country, Fusion, which has added six Devon centres to the 93 facilities it operates across the UK, is renowned for investing in the facilities it operates. Peter Kay, Fusion Lifestyle’s CEO, said: “We have made a commitment to nurture these

sports and leisure facilities and make a serious investment in their improvement and upkeep. “It will be our role to ensure they serve the community for many more years to come. “We invest heavily in restoring and transforming local facilities and believe the communities in Devon will really benefit from what we are bringing to the area.”

EAT, DRINK AND RAISE MONEY

A coffee and crepes morning organised by Ivybridge Trefoil Guild raised £436 for the Alzheimer’s Society. As well as good food, entertainment from the Modbury Ukulele Group made the event special. The Guild would like to thank all those who came and supported the event at the end of February.

An Ivybridge dentist is running the London Marathon to raise money for a charity that supports women overcoming addictions, while enabling them to keep their children and babies. Trevi House in Plymouth is a unique rehabilitation centre, and Peter is supporting its work after seeing the valuable work it does. Peter said: “I am proud to be running for Trevi House and hope to raise lots of money for this valuable service. “I visited Trevi and it was clear to see the passion the staff have to help the mothers turn their lives around for the better.” This will be Peter’s first marathon and the Ivybridge dentist and the dad of two – to Ben(8) and Alice (5) – has been training hard to ensure he completes the race. î Sponsor Peter at uk.virgin moneygiving.com/PeterReville To find out more about Trevi House go to treviproject.org Claire Morgan-Hughes of Devon Fit Camp is set to tackle the marathon for a fourth time - see p22

PERFUME AND COLOURS Stowford Hall at The Watermark gradually filled with the perfume and colours of beautiful spring flowers at the March meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club. Catherine Gardener, a florist from Callington, showed members modern ways of getting the best from narcissus, tulips, ranunculus and hybrid sweet Williams, all locally grown in the Tamar Valley. Her designs used the bare minimum of oasis (floral foam) and depended on natural foliage and twigs for mechanics. Also at the meeting, members were given the new date for the quiz – 3rd April – and reminded of the next class and about the annual dinner, which is at The White Hart, Modbury. The next club meeting is on 10th April at The Watermark at 7.30pm, when the demonstrator will be Pat Boundy. Visitors are welcome, £6. ¢ Contact club chairman Hilary Newcombe on 01752 892647

SAD LOSS OF DEAR MAN

Members of Ivybridge Crafters are mourning the loss of a popular crafter and dear man. David Stock has been part of the crafters for four years, an extremely helpful man which included being chauffeur to various workshops. David also loved decorating the group’s community Christmas tree and was always happy to help other crafters. He enjoyed coming along to the felt workshops and always had a laugh with the ladies! The crafters are all truly devastated by the sudden loss. Hazel, his wife and the group’s social secretary for many years, will be well looked after by the amazing 6

APRIL WALKS

AMUSING ANECDOTES

As Ivybridge Probus Club continues its search for a new home, its March monthly lunch was held at Wellbeck Manor, the second venue to be trialled as a permanent venue for its meetings. Having enjoyed an excellent meal, president Michael Greaves went through club business before Howard Webster introduced the speaker, past president Michael Bailey, appearing in appropriate attire, to talk about his incredible experiences when working in Pakistan. The talk was an amusing recollection of anecdotes recalling the amazing hospitality of his then client, the National Bank of Pakistan. It seemed that they were more concerned that Michael should be well looked after than spend too much time working! The non-work distractions included attending a pro-am golf tournament on his first day in Karachi, playing cricket in Lahore and the extraordinary experience of the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The best came when he got to Peshawar. On arrival at his hotel. he was faced with a notice asking that all guns and ammunition be checked in at reception! The bank’s vice president there took Michael under his wing and he

went to dinner and engagement parties, tours through the Khyber Pass and firing Kalashnikovs into the mountain valleys. These trips were interspersed with walks around the old town and its market and its snake charmers. This month’s meeting is being held at The Rose and Crown at Yealmpton on Tuesday, 4th April. ¢ Contact secretary Bob Mailing on 01752 892255

BEST PANTO OF ALL

‘As the clock struck 12 and she ran from the ball, was Cinderella the best pantomime of them all?’ Ivybridge Theatre Company drew record crowds for their hugely entertaining production of Cinderella. Staged over four days, with five performances, during the February half term week, the pantomime attracted just short of 800 people – a box office record for the company. Excited children – and adults – cheered Cinderella and Prince Charming and booed the nasty stepmother, the Baroness Hardupp and her dreadful daughters, Stella and Chardonnay. There were laughs galore as well as some good, old-fashioned, panto audience participation. The whole cast did themselves proud, with some exceptional stand-out performances. There were wonderfully colourful costumes, pacey dancing and songs, special effects and a confetti-filled finale sent everyone home smiling. ITC is now well advanced preparing for its next production, Bedroom Farce by Alan Ayckbourn, to be staged at The Watermark on 6-8th July. This play – the early Ayckbourn at its best – revolves around four couples, all of who know each other. It is a typical Ayckbourn study of people and their characters, and the darker underside of one of his characters. Remember to put the dates in your diary or phone! ITC meet at Chapel Place, Fore Street, every Wednesday at 7.30pm. If you have any interest or experience in performing arts or helping back-stage, the company would love to hear from you; annual membership is £15 for over 16s. ¢ Contact Ron Davis on 01752 893308 or visit ivybridgetheatre company.co.uk

The Clay Factory Diaries THE GREAT GET TOGETHER We all remember the tragic news on 16th June, 2016, when popular Leeds MP Jo Cox was murdered. The country was in the grip of a political debate that would shape our future and ultimately would lead us to leaving the EU. What happened to Jo Cox was hard to fathom and despite differences of political opinion the incident shook the British public to the core. Fast-forward 10 months and the political debates have changed slightly (as have some political leaders), but one shining light has been the way the family of Jo Cox have responded to those tragic events. To mark the anniversary of her death in June, the family are calling for street parties to be held across the UK to bring communities together, uniting us in a climate that has been turbulent to say the least. This is something we’re passionate about at The Clay Factory and we want to offer our space to the community on the weekend of 17-18th June to take part in The Great Get Together. We have oodles of space, both indoor and out, lots happening on-site, and we are very open to working with members of the community to make this happen. Come on Ivybridge, let’s get together! On another note, we have our first art event of the year this month. Breaking Surface is an exhibition of four abstract artists who are inspired by an emotional connection to landscape. The event is being run by students at Plymouth College of Art and is free. So, put the event in your diary and come and see the wonderful art on display. If you wish to discuss The Great Get Together contact us at enquiries@ thecatandthebox.co.uk or visit The Clay Factory on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram. Breaking Surface is on 8-9th April, 11am-4pm.

BEST OF TOWN ON SHOW AT SPRING FÊTE The second Ivybridge Spring Fête is being held in Glanvilles Mill on Saturday, 22nd April. Organised by Miss Ivy Events and Ivybridge Chamber of Commerce, the day will be jampacked with an array of amazing artisan and gift stalls, fabulous ‘make-do-and-mend’ workshops from Mrs Marvellous and Papercutz by Sheena. There will be musical entertainment from the wonderful Becky Brine, alongside plenty to keep the children amused, such as face painting, magic shows and balloon modelling. Delicious refreshments, served by local businesses, will be available throughout the day, and Ivybridge’s great shops will be open and supporting the event. “Supporting local business is so important,” says Joanne Macaskie, Miss Ivy Events director.

DONKEYS INVITE YOU TO EASTER FUN WEEKEND

Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the Easter Fun Weekend at Ivybridge Donkey Sanctuary. The family fun-filled long weekend – Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Monday 17th April (closed Easter Sunday) – will feature an all-weather Easter egg hunt, fun games and activities, craft corner, tombola, a raffle and the chance to take a look around our donkey world shop. And of course you will be able to say hello to the donkeys, and may even wish to adopt a donkey as an Easter treat! Each day the fun starts at 10am and continues until 3pm. Entry and parking is free. Paddington, Little Red Riding Hood, Batman and a plethora of other famous book characters attended Woodlands Park Primary School for World Book Day. The children and teachers got creative with amazing costumes for the day, which celebrates the joy of books and reading. After school, the children together with their parents attended a book fair in the school hall, which raised over ÂŁ600 for books for the school.

SCHOOL REPORTS Children at Manor School took part in a wide variety of activities to celebrate and inspire their love of books and reading during a busy Book Week. During the week, the children took part in a daily reading carousel, had the opportunity to design and make their own book covers and compare stories written by the same author. They were also encouraged to bring in a good quality second-hand book to sell on a book stall to raise funds for future school projects. They also loved the opportunity to dress as their favourite book character, with some fantastic costumes ranging from Mary Poppins to Harry Potter, with many David Walliams-inspired characters, too. Staff also entered into the fun, which saw Red Riding Hood teaching alongside Stig of the Dump, and a pirate invasion in years three/four!

SCHOOL REPORTS The pupils and staff at Holbeton Primary School entered fully into the spirit of World Book Day when they came to school for the day in amazing costumes depicting their favourite character from a book. Both staff and pupils committed themselves wholeheartedly to their characters, with a liberal application of greasepaint! The older children helped the young pupils ferret around in the library to find their favourite characters, before snuggling down on the comfy library bean bags to read about them.

wellness FIGHTING FIT FOR FUNDRAISING It has been all go at Devon Fit Camp says Claire Morgan-Hughes Some of my team members and I have been wearing trainers more than any other footwear of late as we get in shape to take on numerous challenges to raise money for our chosen charities for 2017, Cancer Research UK and Get Kids Going! Devon Fit Camp is not all about broccoli and burpees, but improving your fitness levels and increasing your confidence. This has inspired members to take on challenges that they hadn’t dreamt of and, in doing so, helping others less fortunate. I’ll be taking on the London Marathon for the fourth consecutive year on 23rd April. Both charities are very close to our hearts and this is why I will finish: Get Kids Going! helps disabled young athletes but it also provides manual wheelchairs for children to use every day – at home, at school, and to enable them to play with their friends. The charity, which supports children with all disabilities and from all backgrounds, takes pride in ensuring that equipment which is out-grown is recycled to other children, so supporters’ valuable donations are never wasted. Cancer Research UK is a charity very close to our hearts – keep an eye out for the adverts showing nationally, you might see some familiar faces! We will share with you next month why this charity is so special to us.

DIFFERING EXPERIENCES OF MOTHER’S DAY A celebratory day to thank mums can have mixed emotions for many people say Yvonne and Diane of Ivy Counselling / Brighter Futures

We’d love you to get involved in our fundraising, too. Don’t worry, we won’t ask you to run any marathons (unless you’d like to of course!). If you’d like to sponsor or support our fundraising, please visit: virginmoneygiving. com/DevonFitCamp If you, or your company, would like to get involved, or you’d like help getting ready for your event this spring, call 01752 426223 or email info@devonfitcamp.co.uk You may feel inspired to get into running yourself – why not enter a race in our local area? There is a 5km Race for Life in Plymouth in June – raceforlife. cancerresearchuk.org Good luck! I’m off for another training run. Please give a toot and a wave if you see me or any of our awesome team out on the roads! Claire x Mother’s Day has been and gone. It is a day that can engender many mixed emotions, with people experiencing it in different ways. For those who accept it as a positive means of thanking their mother, they may have little or no idea how others are facing this celebratory day. For some, the loss of their mother, either by death or estrangement, can make this a difficult day to face. Death can leave behind a multitude of emotions. Those who have experienced the death of their mother may feel relief that their suffering has ceased; those living with their mother’s terminal

illness may feel relief knowing their suffering will soon come to an end. For others, guilt may be impacting on their conscience for what they said, or did not have the opportunity to say, while mum was still alive.

Thinking differently This may have now left thoughts/ feelings of regret which cannot be resolved when mother is no longer there. Some mothers have severed any relationship with their son or daughter. This could mean conflict, not only with their son or daughter

but maybe negative opinions about their son or daughter’s partner resulting in limited or no contact; relations with grandchildren might also be effected. On the other hand, the son or daughter may have made the decision to have limited or no contact with their mother. Assumptions, opinions, thoughts, feelings can all result in a variety of conflict leaving those concerned believing that any resolution is totally out of reach. wellness CHANGE THE WAY YOU TALK TO YOURSELF Positive self talk can help you approach challenges in a more hopeful way says Tiffany Armitage Having positive self talk benefits our mental health (with reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression), and our physical health (studies showing ultimately increased life span, and healthier lives of those who are optimistic and think more positive). It’s not about being unrealistically enthusiastic about everything, its about approaching challenges in a more hopeful and productive way. For many people, they are negative first and foremost about themselves. The conversation going on in

our minds can ultimately be destructive, breaking down confidence and creating sadness and worry. Changing thought patterns is do-able, and simple. In the same way we can learn a new skill, so we can learn to be more positive about ourselves. Ultimately, what you are aiming to do is create a new habit of thought, where the thoughts you dwell on about yourself are realistic and helpful for you. It does take time, practice and repetition! So, first things first, start to notice if you are being negative about yourself. You may be filtering out the positive, catastrophising, blaming yourself, or just generally putting yourself down. Recognise that these thoughts are not true, and definitely not helpful – send them on their way. They may pop back,

as that’s what you’ve trained your brain to do. Distract yourself, or think of some positive affirmation that you can replace the thought with. Be gentle with yourself – start practicing putting a more positive spin on yourself. By changing the way you think, you’ll discover that you also change the way you feel and how you respond to the people around you. A good rule is: don’t say anything to yourself that you wouldn’t say to someone else. If you continue to struggle to turn your internal voice to a more positive one, please do contact me on 01752 710 277 or email tiff@tiffanyarmitage.co.uk Hypnotherapy can help enormously to help you feel better about yourself and enjoy your life. New podiatrist on the block

Hello. I am Jackie Thomas, an experienced local podiatrist who is about to start a clinic in Ivybridge town centre Having run a successful clinic in Torquay for some years, I am really excited to expand and offer my services in my home town. Ivybridge appointments will initially be offered on Fridays, with home visits possible for people who find getting to the clinic difficult on other days. The clinic will be located at the Blue Mountain Family Chiropractic Clinic, next door to the Town Hall, and start on Friday, 7th April, 9am to 4pm. Some of you will already be familiar with the location: Helena Hutt ran Footcare Southwest there previously but has now retired and is referring her patients on to me. So, a bit more about me... I have lived in Ivybridge for 13 years 24

and have brought my children up here. I passed my podiatry degree with first class honours and initially worked for the NHS before starting my own practice. The new Ivybridge clinic will offer a foot health check for every new patient and annual checks for existing patients. I can help with a wide variety of foot ailments and injuries,

from minor problems like athlete’s foot and fungal toenails to more serious conditions such as diabetic wound care and peripheral arterial disease. I also offer cosmetic treatments such as prosthetic toenails and nail-friendly pedicures. If you are wondering what podiatry treatments are available, look out for articles in future editions of The Ivybridge magazine, when I will discuss specific foot problems that I can help with. You can be assured that you are in safe hands. I am fully qualified and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. • To book a clinic appointment or home visit please contact my friendly receptionist Debi Sutton on 01752 426075 between 9am and 1pm, Monday to Friday. Alternatively, book online at abbeyroadpodiatry.com Health and Care Professions Council Registration No. CH33566.

IN THE

community By Hannah Whiting - Co-op Community Pioneer

We have been taking collections for Ivybridge Food Bank for just over six months. At the beginning, we took the donations down once a month, but now we have so many donations coming in that we are now taking donations down at least twice a month. Thank you so much to all our customers for their donations! If you want to donate, just pick up an item in store, purchase it at the checkouts and place it in the collection box at the end of the checkouts. We have a cake sale coming up on Thursday, 6th April, to raise funds for the Ivybridge under 12s football team. We will have lots of delicious sweet treats baked by colleagues and parents, so come down and treat yourself to something and donate towards a good cause as well. We also have the Pet Pictures in store from 7th April. We asked our customers to send in their funniest and cutest pet pictures and our judges have short-listed them and the three finalists will be on display in store. Customers can use their money to vote for which picture they think is best, with the photo that receives the highest donations being the winner of a pet portrait! All funds go to Ivybridge Ring & Ride! We will also have a fundraising stand at the Ivybridge Spring Fair on 22nd April – so hopefully we’ll see you there!

Royal British Legion I would like to start this time with a little promotion for the RBL. This year, the small Ivybridge Branch raised some £25,000 for the Poppy Appeal. As a result of this and other activities, the Branch was awarded with Devon’s top honour, the Crediton Cup (as reported last month). The Branch meets on the second Wednesday of each month, and you don’t have to be serving or ex-serving, anyone can join. Contact Dermot Roberts on 01752 691645 to find out more.

Scam mail Fresh out from an interesting workshop involving Devon Trading Standards, the police and Royal Mail advising how to recognise victims of scam mail. In total, 20 residents in the area were identified as having been potentially targeted by scams. Some of the residents were particularly

vulnerable and have had difficulty coping with large amounts of post. The scams include letters from lotteries, sweepstakes and competitions offering a prize in return for payment. Have you had similar? Do you know or suspect someone you know is being targeted? Do everyone a favour – write to Freepost Scam Mail or email scam.mail@ royalmail.com or call the dedicated message service on 03456 113413 – all confidential. Or contact me.

Your brown bin Ever wondered where your cooked or uncooked waste food

and garden (green) waste goes? It goes to an In-Vessel Composter near Newton Abbot. The waste is shredded and then composted in very large enclosed ‘vessels’ (sheds), then left to mature for 12 weeks on external concrete pads. This results in fair quality compost for farms to use to improve soil structure and reduce the need for fertiliser. On average, nearly a quarter of the contents of the grey bin is food waste, which will be incinerated and is no good for anything – your food caddy and your brown bin are the places for food waste.

CARING CHARITY BOWLED OVER BY GENEROUS DONATION An annual indoor bowls tournament raised £800 to support volunteers who care for elderly, disabled and vulnerable people in the Ivybridge area. Ivybridge Short Matt Bowls Club, which has held its charity bowls tournament for 20 years, was delighted to raise so much for Ivybridge Caring. Twenty-eight teams, from Saltash to Exeter, competed for the annual trophy at Ivybridge Community College. This year’s winners were a team from Saltash, with Slapton in second place. Carol Beeson from Ivybridge Caring was on hand to accept a cheque (pictured) for £800 and

thank the bowlers for their support. Ivybridge Caring supports elderly, disabled and vulnerable people in the Ivybridge area. Its aim is to help people in need with a variety of tasks, including home visits, shopping and short walks. Staffed by volunteers, they operate from The Watermark. CHARITY FUNDRAISING I am delighted to report that your donations to our chosen charity, Marie Curie, has raised £1,284 so far this year. This equates to approximately 65 hours of nursing care in their own home for a person living with terminal illness. Funds are being raised in store from our second-hand Book Sale and Swap Shop, the Wishing Well and the raffle of a huge cuddly teddy during March. During April, we are raffling a rather naughty, but nice, Easter Hamper. Pop into reception desk to get your tickets!

meets Monday and Tuesday evenings in Ivybridge Community College from 7pm. The game provides a good social atmosphere, with a competitive element to provide an entertaining evening. The club has trained coaches and bowls are available for beginners or returners to try their hand. Many members also belong to the outdoor club so they can continue the game in the summer months. To find out more about short matt bowls and the Ivybridge Club, contact the secretary on 01752 691306. Starting on 18th April we are excited to be running the popular sunflower competition in store once again. There will be super prizes for the winner, second and third largest specimens in each age group. Last year’s winning entry grew to an enormous 3.4 metres (10’ 10”) and we are hoping to see some whopping sunflowers again this year! We will also be venturing out into selected schools and groups with the competition to inspire and educate youngsters about the fun of growing plants. If this sounds like something you would like your school, brownie or cub pack, rainbows or beavers group to get involved with then please do contact me. Once again a big thank you to all our amazing customers for your continued generous support of our fundraising projects and raffles.

WHY DO I NEED A WILL? By Monica Salvioni Reeder – Operations & Client Services at Richardsons Legal Services

The first question people usually ask is: “Why do I need a Will? I haven’t got much and my wishes for my family are really simple”. Well, not really and not always. Let’s see why... The first reason we need a Will is to make sure that the ones we want to inherit really will do so. In simple terms, we want to avoid intestacy. Intestacy is when somebody dies without a Will – that somebody will die intestate – and their estate will be distributed according to very rigid intestacy rules. It means that, if you die without a Will, according to intestacy rules, your stepchildren will be automatically excluded from your inheritance; your property might not go to the person you had intended it to go; if you are not married to your partner, your partner is not entitled to your inheritance; your wife or your

children might not inherit at all or not in the way you might have wished they did. For parents with minor children, the scariest part is that, should both die without a Will, or with a Will that does not contemplate appointing a guardian for our minor children, the state will take care of them, and not necessarily in the way we would have wished. Even a simple, straight-forward Will might not be a strong tool to make sure that the ones you want to protect and to inherit one day will. In some cases, it is paramount to set up a Trust within the Will or even outside the Will, a Home Protection Trust. Please call us on 0800 0148031 to make an appointment with us. We will advise you as to the best way to protect your family and your assets, whether with a simple Will or a Will with a Trust built in it, or with the ultimate asset protection tool, a Home Protection Trust. Richardsons Legal Services is fully qualified, Insured and regulated.

MONEY MATTERS with Ivybridge Accountants Ltd As the tax year draws to an end, we should look at a couple of planning opportunities before 5th April, says Simon Jilks

If you are operating a company, ensure the level of dividends you have drawn make the most of the tax bands – not too much that you end up paying higher rate tax, not too little so that your £5,000 allowance is not used. Also, ensure you have paid yourself an adequate salary to make the most of the National Insurance free amounts, ie £8,060. Any landlords who need to carry out repairs to their property should get these done by 5th April, allowing tax relief to be claimed in 2016/17. It would also be a good time, perhaps, to review your investments to make sure you are making the most of available annual allowances. We have also just had the spring

budget, which, on the whole, was not a very exciting one. The main headlines were about the now cancelled increase in class 4 NIC. However, a greater impact will be felt with the reduction of the dividend allowance from £5,000 to £2,000 from April 2018. This could cost a higher rate tax payer as much as £975 more per year. In other budget news, personal allowances for 2017/18 will increase to £11,500, with the amount you earn before paying higher rate tax increases to £45,000. Class 2 NIC will be abolished from April 2018. Business rates increases have been limited temporarily for those experiencing increases, but for those expecting a reduction the transitional relief is not so good as the reduction will be phased in. If you wish to chat about the impact of the budget on you, or any tax planning, please drop in for a free meeting.

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council Our Annual Town Meeting is on Friday, 21st April, at The Watermark starting at 7pm. We are delighted that Gary Streeter MP will be attending to speak at our meeting. Do come along to learn about the work of the council, what is happening in the year ahead, ask questions and hear from our speakers.

JOINT LOCAL PLAN The future of Ivybridge until 2034 is open for formal consultation until Wednesday, 26th April. Much of the consultation is online, either via the Plymouth City Council website or at http://old.southhams.gov.uk/ jointlocalplan If you have comments or wish to object at this stage then it needs to be on the basis that aspects of the plan are “unsound”; effectively, why it’s illogical to select a site for development which has perhaps been identified as having severe constraints by the district council’s own assessments. The town council will be submitting its objections on the location of much of the proposed new housing development and the fact that no land for employment is designate. This is the last chance to comment before the plan is sent to an Inspector, who will assess the comments made and what changes need to be made.

STOP PRESS - BUTTERPARK The ideas for Butterpark, which the council has been working on with a private developer, Dove Project, Brook Housing plus local councillors to deliver a housing project on the former residential care home site are now moving forward as Devon County Council has declared the site as surplus, and offered it to the council at a discounted rate to deliver our plans. Through a combination of conversion of part of the existing property and new build housing it will provide much-needed private rented housing, six rent-to-buy houses (via Rent Plus) plus six flats and a training house for people with moderate learning disabilities. Detailed plans, plus a great deal of consultation, will be happening by the summer this year before plans are submitted for planning permission. POPPY PAINTING AT IVYDENE Ivydene – Painting Poppies By Abby and Jess Oldaport class at the Erme Primary School visited Ivydene to paint some clay poppies with some of the residents. It was lovely to chat to them while we painted the poppies. After we had finished painting the poppies, we had some juice and a choice of cookies. Then we went into the lounge and sat with the residents. We were particularly fond off Margaret, who chatted with us. After having about 10 minutes of laughter with Margaret it was Ben Edwards as Charlie B Victoria Garage - Aug16_Layout 1 16-Jul-16 11:30 AM Page 1 sadly time to leave.

Current and former pupils of Holbeton Primary School were centre stage in a hugely enjoyable production of Oliver by the Holbeton Players. The role of Oliver was filled by Casper Purkis, whose mum Zoe starred as Nancy and sister Scarlett and brothers Jacob and Gabriel as members of Fagin’s gang of pick -pockets; the family’s bull terrier, Roxy, was Bullseye the dog. Casper looked convincingly waif-like and gave a confident performance, singing several strong solos. Jake Edwards as the Artful Dodger and brother Ben as Charlie had clearly inherited their acting talent from their

father Simon, who was a largerthan-life Bumble the Beadle. Jamie Green played a menacing Bill Sykes to perfection. Dr John Gibson on the organ gave the singers fantastic support. It was clear to the audience just how much the whole cast were enjoying themselves.

An old country house tradition was revived by the Flete Estate when it hosted an evening of music performed by the Serenade Quartet at Pamflete House. Through a family connection, the accomplished musicians, who first played together 30 years ago, agreed to organise a reunion. Their credits include performances with an impressive list of top orchestras, ballets, opera groups and ensembles, and teaching and 37_TIM_Dec16_The_Ivybridge_magazine 18-Nov-16 6:07 PM Page 37 examining with the associated board of the Royal School of Music and teaching at the Royal College of The Serenade Quartet Music.

The programme included works from 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th century composers, some well-known, others less so, and readings from Thomas Hardy and Roger McGough, among others. During the interval, to the gentle accompaniment of classical guitar music, Prosecco flowed and delicious canapés were provided by two tireless volunteers and their helpers. Generous sponsorship from local businesses offset the catering costs, and a raffle of highly desirable prizes topped off a hugely enjoyable and successful fundraising evening for Bens Boiler Services - Dec16_Layout 1 11-Nov-16 4:34 PM Page 1 Holbeton Pre-School. /

SPORT

Community RANGERS Easter marks the start of the visitor season on the Moor Happy Easter! For us Rangers, as the visitor season begins, we will be out patrolling over the Easter weekend. You will notice that the lambing and bird nesting signs are around the moor to remind us all to keep our dogs under close control. Ground nesting birds are easily disturbed, particularly by dogs running free through moorland vegetation. When a bird is forced to leave its nest, the eggs or newly fledged young can chill and die very quickly, or predators can move in and take eggs or nestlings. Dartmoor’s moorland birds are a cause for celebration but they need our continuing care. As the largest upland area in southern England, Dartmoor offers many different habitats to a wide variety of breeding birds. Moorland areas are home to a fascinating range of birds, all of which contribute to the richness of the area and our enjoyment of this special place.

HARRIERS TACKLE TOUGH CHALLENGES

Ben Trigg at ‘The Grizzly’

l athletics Athletes of Erme Valley Harriers are always keen to take on a challenge, and there are few, if any, races, more difficult than ‘The Grizzly’, run over 20 very hilly miles around Seaton, Beer and Branscombe in East Devon. Apart from the hills, there is plenty of mud and cobbled beaches for a race which attracts athletes from all over the country. This year, Ben Trigg finished 4th in 2.26.45 and was followed by Neil Holmes in 29th in 2.43.58. Holmes regards the race as his favourite – he has run 22 of the 30 times it has been raced – winning several times and achieving many top place finishes. Other Harriers who finished the demanding course were Emma 38

Steve Watson (1.36.57) and Richard Lane (1.39.35) ran the much shorter ‘Cub Race’, while on the previous day promising young

athlete Sam Yearling was 2nd in the ‘Junior Grizzly’. Three athletes survived another tough ‘off road’ race, the Hammeldown Hammer, which takes place in the Widecombe-in-the-Moor area. Dave Church (2.25.24) was the first Harrier home, followed by Ken Summers (2.30.26) and Richard Lane (2.52.40). On the road, Ian Crossley (1.38.27) was the only Harrier at the Bideford Half Marathon, while at the Bath Half Marathon Alison Thorn achieved a new personal best time of 1.34.46 and Cleo Perry ran 1.25.02, which is just outside PB. Martin Perry ran his first half marathon in a time of 2.06.07. Meanwhile, Sarah Hirons continued her recent good form, finishing as the first overall female at the Granite Way 20. She was 15th overall and ran a time of 2.26.16. There was also a 10 mile race, with Rose Bralsford first female vet 45 in 1.27.20 in her first 10 mile race.

During the bird breeding season (March, April, May, June and July), you can minimise disturbance by: • Keeping to tracks and paths as much as possible, particularly in areas of dense heather, clitter and wetlands • Keeping your dog on a lead – especially as most lambing takes place at the same time that birds are nesting • Avoiding young birds on the ground or distressed parent birds, by walking around the area and moving away quickly, allowing the parents to return • Spreading the word by telling others how they can help too. Finally, remember it’s a time for lambing, too. If you have any concerns about lambs that appear to be abandoned please do not pick them up – instead, contact the livestock protection officer on 07873 587561. Happy Easter from Ella and Andrea!
